Principle Art Auctioneer

The Principle Art Auctioneer is the head of the Art Department and is responsible for managing all sales related to art on board the ship - promotion, direct sales and hosted live auctions. Conducts the latter in well organized, fast-paced and entertaining manner reaching a broad spectrum of perspective bidders and (eventually) buyers.

She/he must demonstrate at all times an in-depth knowledge about individual items, the respective artist and in fine arts in general.

He/she is also responsible for the on-the-job training of the assigned Associate Auctioneers passing to them knowledge, skills and secrets of the trade and making sure that they gradually become capable of assuming the role of Principle Art Auctioneer.

Another very important activity related with this position is a constant interaction with passengers in all public areas of the ship - atrium, lounges, bars, open decks etc. initiating conversations, educating guests on fine art, actively looking for art patrons and collectors, pointing out places and times of auctions and presentations, describing available paintings and other pieces of art in order to maximize sales revenue.

The Principle Art Auctioneer also develops and coordinates marketing strategies for cross-sales in conjunction with other departments on board the cruise ship - Gift Shops, Photo, Food and Beverage, Spa, Casino, Entertainment etc. organizing mutually beneficial events and raising the awareness and interest of potential customers to available pieces of art.

The job involves certain administrative duties, as well - maintaining records of all sales (direct or via live auction) and inventory transactions; completes all documents and certificates of authenticity accompanying each piece of art, required by shipboard or / and shore side authorities; receives and offloads inventory (with the help of the Associate Auctioneer and Art Stewards); organizing the shipping of purchased items to designated by the costumer address.

Principal Art Auctioneer job requirements:

In many cases Associate Auctioneers who have passed all levels of on-the-job training aboard a cruise ship (time frame depends on the personal qualities and dedication of the individual and ranges from as little as four weeks to several months) become Principle Auctioneers.

In other cases companies may hire directly candidates with previous fine arts gallery and auction sales experience and proven sales record. Candidates must be able to manage the presentational and financial aspects of art auctioning and exceed in fulfilling all of the above mentioned duties.

All candidates must be fluent in English (spoken and written). Knowledge of other languages is a plus.

Salary - earnings are based on commission (percentage of net sales) and vary depending entirely on volume of sales. Sales depend on many factors - personal abilities and selling skills, type of cruise ship (guests), itinerary, type and quality of arts etc. There is no limit for earnings and many principle art auctioneers reach 5 digit numbers, some go beyond that. Accommodation and meals are paid by the company.

Associate Art Auctioneer

Candidates must be clean cut, responsible, money motivated, sales driven and able to stay onboard a cruise ship for minimum of 4 months long contract. Fine art knowledge is a plus, but the companies provide hands on training aboard a cruise ship. The time frame to become a Principal Art Auctioneer varies. Some will advance to the latter position in 4 weeks, others could remain in the Associate position for several months. Once the auctioneers have been thoroughly trained they are responsible for managing and operating their own vessel. Good, clear spoken and written English is a must, as associates must speak in front of multitudes and be able to deal with documentation and sales transactions records. Knowledge of other languages is a plus. Associate Art Auctioneers pass through 3 levels of paid training - only a base salary is provided during the first level, while a base pay plus commission is provided during level two and three ( $2,200 to 3,700 U.S. per month).

Arrival on the ship .

At the port, please advise the port authorities that you are an embarking crew member. At the Gangway, you will meet the Crew Purser and the Production Coordinator, who will guide you through your first days on board. You will then be assigned a cabin, receive your name badge and the crew identification card. As representative of the Shipping Company, the Crew Purser will ask you to sign the acknowledgement of the Standard Procedures that regulate life on board, with reference to your rights and duties as crew member with special attention to discipline. 

The official language on board most cruise ships is English. It is also the language used by safety authorities on board and ashore. You will be asked to pass a safety test in English. If you fail, then you will not be considered fit for life on board. 

Cruise ship workers are classified as Officers, Staff and Crew. Entertainers on the ship often have enhanced crew status, and sometimes guest entertainer status.

Meals and Accommodation 

Depending on the cruise line, and whether you are a solo or duo, you will either be in a double cabin to be shared with another crew member, or in a cabin on your own. Cabin changes may happen at any time and are decided by the staff on board. Meals are taken in the staff dining room, or if permitted, in the guest restaurant.

Dress code 

You always need to look smart, neat, and elegant when in guest areas during the day. On gala nights, a formal dress/suit is required. 

Name Badge 

After you embark, you will be given a badge with your name. It is a safety requirement that you wear your name badge at all times on board.

Medical Treatment 

The ship's doctor is always available at no cost and provides regular medical service. The company will pay for any necessary shore-side medical attention, treatment or surgery caused by an illness or injury due to a work-related accident. 

Staying in touch 

On board, you can use crew wireless internet service, or mobile phones. You will also find internet cafes in most ports.

Respect and consideration of all others on the ship is central to life on board and basic list of rules and regulations apply to everyone.  Fighting, discrimination, sexual harassment, drug and alcohol use are not tolerated.

Drugs and alcohol 

It is not permitted to use, possess or sell illegal drugs. No crew-member may consume alcohol resulting in a blood alcohol level above permitted by the ship authorities. Random alcohol tests may take place on board. 

Crew Welfare 

Crew members can enjoy crew parties, special events, and sales, and excursions. You also have access to recreational facilities, such as crew swimming pool, sun bathing area, and crew gym.

An activities coordinator is similar to an event planner. In this role, you oversee things like recreation on board and coordinating shore excursion activities. The BLS does not offer wage information for this position.

The amount of money you can make working as a bartender on a cruise ship varies greatly, depending on whether guests are expected to tip. But the average salary for bartenders is $29,380 annually.

Casino dealer

Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.

Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.

Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.

Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.

Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.

The experience required to work as a deckhand can vary greatly depending on the job description. The BLS does not offer salary information for this position.

Entertainer

Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.

Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.

Cruise ships also need people to manage their entertainers, particularly if the ship has a lot of shows and performances scheduled.

Entertainment directors may be involved in scheduling staff, planning performances, and doing administrative work. The average salary for entertainment/recreation managers is $67,220 annually.

Fitness instructor

Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.

For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.

Hair/makeup artist

On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.

The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.
