15 Best Things to Do in Zamboanga City (the Philippines)

The 3rd largest city in the Philippines, Zamboanga City operates as the commercial and industrial center of the south. The city is bustling with a factory district, plenty of businesses, shops, and markets where you can find any good or service that you desire.

Dubbed “Asia’s Latin City”, you’ll see a Spanish influence in Zamboaga City, more so than in the rest of the country. For a while, Spanish was even an official language of Zamboanga City. Zamboangueño people are very proud of their cultural roots and heritage. You’ll see reflections of this in the food, language, and architecture.

It’s important to know, however, that Zamboanga City does not see many foreigners or travelers as it is located near a state of conflict. Guerilla groups live in the south of the Philippines, not too far from this gem of a city. Security has been boosted with the National Guard all around checking IDs and keeping a close watch of suspicious activity with the aims of maintaining peace. Travelers tend to keep their distance lately, but if you do decide to go to Zamboanga City, go with a Filipino that knows their way around the safest areas. 1. Merloquet Falls

One could argue that the most majestic falls in Zamboanga city are the Merloquet Falls. This natural beauty looks more like an ancient ruin where a waterfall has magically decided to run through it, rather than a wall of rocks. It’s truly breathtaking.

Surrounded by jungle, you’ll come across a cool pool of water being fed by tiers of waterfall rocks. There are a couple platforms under the biggest section of the waterfall where you can give yourself a waterfall massage or just hang out and listen to the soothing sounds.

2. Paseo del Mar

Who doesn’t love a causal boardwalk along the water? Paseo del Mar offers just that with the addition of small shops, restaurants, and food carts for you to browse. There is also Zamboanga City’s pride and joy, the Dancing Fountain which shoots water into the air, captivating each passersby for a solid minute or two.

From the boardwalk, you can see the big and little Santa Cruz Islands, as well as the Basilan Island just to the south.

The evening is the perfect time to visit as the weather isn’t too hot and the lighting creates a romantic ambiance. There are police offers patrolling so you don’t need to worry about an abundance of sketchy situations.

3. Fort Pilar

You can most certainly see the Spanish influence in Fort Pilar, a 17th-century fort of defense built and used by the Spanish military.

Upon your visit, you’ll be welcomed by a large courtyard with a wide brick path leading up to the regal fortress which looks like something out of the Alamo. Fort Pilar is adorned with dozens of bright white stars surrounding an outdoor shrine for Roman Catholics who believe that the Christian mother Mary appeared here many years ago.

4. Rio Hondo Village

You’re in for some culture shock when you visit Rio Hondo Village. A collection of shanty wood houses built on stilts over the water, this village gives you a glimpse into how a large percentage of Filipinos live below the poverty line.

Despite their humble quarters, the people of Rio Hondo Village are extremely friendly, especially the children who spend their days fishing in small boats and playing in the water.

Walk on the long boardwalk in-between houses where you’ll find areas to buy handicrafts and small shops where you can contribute to the local economy by purchasing snacks and beverages.

5. Yakan Weaving Village

At Yakan Weaving Village, you can observe colorful textiles being made on the spot. You’ll most likely recognize these popular textiles as you’ve seen them in the form of purses, parkas, and more along your travels in the Philippines.

There are plenty of handicrafts to be purchased such as hand carved Basilian Pira Swords, satchels, scarves, and textiles to take home as souvenirs. You won’t find price tags on these goods so get ready to haggle a price that leaves both you and the vendor satisfied.

6. Pasonanca Park

A natural paradise in the middle of Zamboanga City, you could easily spend all day here at Pasonanca Park.

Most tourists come to visit the picturesque Zamboanga Tree House built back in 1963. Climb the stairs to enter as you daydream about living the tree house life.

The main event for your kiddos, however, will be the Pasonanca Kiddie Pool equipped with tall waterslides that spit them out into a cool pool of water next to a natural waterfall. For the whole family, there are 3 public pools including one Olympic-sized swimming pool and one natural-flowing pool.

7. Great Santa Cruz Island

Visible from the mainland is Great Santa Cruz Island. This small piece of rock, sand, and mangrove is absolutely worth a day trip.

To get there, head to Paseo del Mar where boats are waiting to jet you to the island on an enjoyable 20-minute ride. You’ll then transfer to another boat which will serve as your tour guide around the island.

Your boat will navigate through the dense mangroves as you do a little bird watching for Purple Herons, egrets, and other graceful creatures. In the blue lagoon, keep an eye out for jellyfish, coral, and interesting water vegetation. The last stop will be at Pink Beach; you’ve never seen anything like it! Imagine pink sand next to turquoise water. It’s a life-changer.

8. Little Santa Cruz Island

From the air, Little Santa Cruz Island is just a small sand bar in the middle of the sea. From land, it’s pretty much the same- which is awesome. This is literally a beach in the middle of the warm, clear, turquoise water. It doesn’t get any more paradisiacal than this!

Boats leave the mainland to Little Santa Cruz Island twice per day: once at 6am and once at 3pm on a ‘first come first serve basis’.  You’ll stay for a few hours enjoying the awe-inspiring realization that this is indeed real life. Bring snacks and beverages with you, as there are no stalls, clean drinking water, or shops on the island.

9. Bayangan Island

Attention all divers: if you want go on an underwater adventure while in Zamboanga City, Banyangan Island offers some great views. You’ll find plenty of tour shops in the city selling package tours with competitive prices. Underwater, visibility is nice and there are tons of fish to be seen.

If you’re not a diver, Bayangan offers other forms of fun for you. This strange little island consists of an unusually wide beachy perimeter and a small patch of jungle in the middle. It’s clean, shady, and provides a great space for climbing and exploring.

10. Go Island Hopping

You’ll find dozens of little islands around Zamboanga city, each one more beautiful than the next. There are 11 islands to be exact, all of which are perfect to incorporate into a day of island hopping. Hire a boat to take you to Buluan Island, the Sibugay Sinking Island, Pandilusan Island, and more. Bring a snorkel and discover the marine life hiding below the surface.

Alternatively, you can rent a kayak and go on an island tour of your own. There are a few islands within reach from the shore- just wear a lifejacket!

11. Caragasan Beach

A 30-minute Jeepney ride from the city lays Caragasan Beach, a spot that is quite popular with the locals.

You’ll enjoy the beach with its cool waters and coarse sand between your toes. You can watch a flurry of boats coming in and out, some with tourists and others with merchandise.

But the main attraction at Caragasan Beach is the night market! This night market has some of the freshest seafood, vegetables, and local delicacies. Better yet, the prices are ridiculously affordable which means that you can eat until you’re stuffed.

12. Nancy Falls

No trip to Zamboanga City is complete without a visit to Nancy Falls. You’ll feel as if you’re in a Jurassic Park Movie (probably the 3rd one) as you sit in the back of the bumpy Jeepney, making your way through the jungle to the base of the falls.

You’ll be taken to the bottom of the waterfall where a system of natural waterfalls flow down into a cool pool at your feet. Don’t be shy; you can hop right in. There are wooding plank bridges that you can climb along while exploring the brush.

13. Canelar Barter Trade Center

It’s time to put your haggling skills to the test at Canelar Barter Trade Center. This covered market is full of stalls selling colorful Filipino handicrafts and souvenirs to take home. For the ladies, there are dresses and traditional Filipina garments everywhere you turn. For the men, you have a nice selection of sunglasses, flip-flops and a few stalls with clothing.

The Canelar Barter Trade Center specializes in doorknockers and manual doorbells that are shaped like deer, oxen, chickens, and lions. This would certainly be a unique memento to walk away with.

14. Tagbilat Falls

If you’re up for a 1-kilometer walk through the jungle that leads you to a dam-like waterfall, then why not check out Tagbilat Falls? Take a guide with you who will lead you through the unmarked jungle paths until you get to the natural swimming pool and tall falls. Off the beaten path, this site is as raw and unspoiled as it gets.

Locals are most familiar with these falls as they are closest to town and many tourists like to visit. Although this has become a popular spot, you aren’t going to find food vendors out here. Bring your own snacks, water, and don’t forget a change of clothes!

ZAMBOANGA CITY | 50 THINGS TO DO & TOURIST SPOTS TO VISIT 2023

Every afternoon after our kid wakes from his nap, we’d quickly go out of our hotel, ride a jeep to pueblo , walk along the old downtown area of Zamboanga City, and be transported back in time. In our mind, this was probably how Manila looked and felt, back in the day. The view would then open up to the sea. We’d buy some snacks, sit beside the breakwater, and along with school kids out with their friends, and wait for the sun to say adios . Those are my memories of our trip to Zamboanga.

We spent four days in and around the city, exploring not only its downtown area, but a few of its outlying islands and islets as well. It is, surprisingly, very walkable, and more importantly, very safe. Besides our usual afternoon jaunt to Paseo Del Mar, we were able to do quite a lot of things and were able to visit more than a few sights in Zamboanga City. With its numerous tourist spots, a weekend trip is definitely not enough to see everything.

PUEBLO / DOWNTOWN ZAMBOANGA

This is the heart of Zamboanga City. The downtown area, dubbed in Chavacano —the local language in the city—as Pueblo . It is located right beside the sea, on the southern part of the peninsula. This is where it’s all happening and also the gateway to Zamboanga’s Pink Sand Beach in Sta. Cruz Island. Let’s start our steps from one of the most iconic places in Zamboanga City, Fort Pilar and move westward from there.

A National Cultural Treasure, Fort Pilar is a military stone fortress constructed by the Spaniards in the 1600s. It was used as defense against pirates and Moro raiders from Jolo, and its cornerstone marked the founding date of Zamboanga as a city. It was built with the help of Mexicans and Peruvians, leading to the development of the Zamboangenos creole language, Chavacano . Visitors are allowed to access its courtyard and climb its fortifications.

Our Lady Of The Pillar Shrine

Built on the outer eastern wall of Fort Pilar is a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar of Saragossa . It was built in 1734 after the Virgin Mary was reported to have appeared in front of a soldier along the city gates. It’s now used as an outdoor church where mass is held daily.

National Museum Western Southern-Mindanao

Fort Pilar now houses the National Museum Western Southern-Mindanao regional museum. It has a permanent exhibit of the 18th century Griffin Shipwreck, rock collections from around the Philippines, weavings from Yakan, Subanun, and Sama tribes, the Lepa houseboat, and over 400 species of marine life from Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu.

Paseo Del Mar

Situated beside Fort Pilar and right by the sea is Zamboanga City’s hang out place, Paseo Del Mar. The plaza has numerous restaurants and stalls hawking everything from sticks of fish balls to plates of curachas . It also has a massive playground complete with a skate park and a dancing fountain. The ferry terminal to Sta. Cruz Island is located here.

ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary

If you don’t know it, you couldn’t tell that there’s a small lake located just beside Fort Pilar. Situated inside the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences & Technology (ZSCMST) compound, the lake is a sanctuary for migratory and non-migratory birds. It’s a welcome and unexpected sight after visiting the popular Fort Pilar tourist spot.

BPI Zamboanga Museum

Along one of downtown’s main avenues stand the old BPI Zamboanga building. It’s a normal functioning BPI branch, only it looks like a house, is made of wood, and is distinguished as BPI’s second branch in the Philippines. But more than that, it has a museum on its second floor. The building used to be the residence of a wealthy Chinese trader, Don Francisco Barrios before it became General John J. Pershing’s house when he was assigned to suppress insurrections in Mindanao.

Zamboanga City Hall

Walk a few more steps and you’d pass by the stately Zamboanga City Hall. Constructed in 1905 by the US Government in Filipino colonial design, it used to serve as the residence of the US Military Governor of the Moro Province. The building, built from stone and wood, is open to the public—as all normal city halls are.

Right in front of the Zamboanga City Hall is a small park dedicated to the Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal. The plaza features a tower with a statue of Rizal at its top facing the city hall. The park is surrounded by hedges with cannons overgrown with blooming flowers.

McDonald’s & Jollibee Zamboanga

Across the street from Rizal Park are two of the country’s most popular fast food chains. While, these aren’t usually tourist spots, the ones in Zamboanga City’s downtown are quite curious since they are housed on colonial-style structures. McDonald’s occupies a repurposed Victorian neo-classical building that used to house the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1928. Jollibee, on the other hand, is housed in a faux bahay na bato structure reminiscent of those in Vigan City .

Plaza Pershing

Another famous park within the area is Plaza Pershing. It’s a pocket park with a neo-classical gazebo named after the American Governor that once lived at the second floor of BPI Zamboanga. The park actually hosts small trade fairs among other things. During one of my visits, the park was full of stalls selling cactuses and other ornamental plants. I even bought some as pasalubong for my mother-in-law.

R.T. Lim Boulevard / Cawa-Cawa Boulevard

From the Zamboanga Public Market near the city hall, ride a jeep to R.T. Lim Boulevard or Cawa-Cawa Boulevard. Zamboanga’s baywalk is a popular place for locals, especially during the afternoons and early evening. The seaside park is clean and very safe. It’s a good place to walk or jog as it stretches for about 600 meters. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset while munching on street food. On the far end of the boulevard, tables and chairs are set for balut, penoy , and beef chicharon —the accompanying vinegar, which range from mild to very spicy, is a must try.

JMDN Seaview

A couple of meters from the end of R.T. Lim Boulevard is another sunset viewpoint, JMDN Seaview. This place, however, has no benches, or anything else for that matter. It’s just a vacant lot where people traveling on cars and motorcycles park to see the view of the setting sun.

Zamboanga Cathedral

About a kilometer away from R.T. Boulevard is Zamboanga City’s Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Concepcion. Its curving modernist façade somehow reminds me of Le Corbusier’s Notre-Dame du Haut church. It replaced the old cathedral located near Rizal Park which was bombed during the Second World War.

PASONANCA PARK

Located on the northern part of Zamboanga City in Barangay Pasonanca is a park designed by an American parksman in 1912. Being on a higher elevation, some people refer to the area as Zamboanga’s Little Baguio .

Pasonanca Swimming Pools

One of the main attractions of the park are its free-flowing public pools—an Olympic-sized pool, The Rotary Pool , and Children’s Pool which has four slides. These are surrounded by trees, giving it shade, and has picnic areas and cottages that can be rented out.

Pasonanca Tree House

Who doesn’t dream of staying on a tree house as a kid? Well, Pasonanca Park has its very own tree house, which was originally built in 1960 as a Youth Citizenship Training Center. It’s free to access by everyone, but the best part is, you can actually rent it for a night.

Pasonanca Science Museum

Think The Mind Museum in BGC with less tech, but no less fun. The Zamboanga City Science Park or Parque de Ciencia de Zamboanga features more than fifty interactive exhibits, catering mostly to kids. It is the largest regional science museum in the Philippines.

El Museo De Zamboanga

Situated beside the science museum, El Museo De Zamboanga narrates the history of Zamboanga City in photos, artefacts, and dioramas. If you want a quick overview of the city’s roots, this is the best place to brush up on it.

Butterfly Garden

Pasonanca’s Butterfly Sanctuary is one of the more popular destinations in Pasonanca Park. It’s located in a small area near the La Jardin de Maria Clara Lobregat , a garden named after the city’s former mayor. Well, who doesn’t love colorful butterflies?

Camp Limbaga

Then there’s the Boy Scout huts at Scout Limbaga. This is actually a real camp site for Boy Scouts and where the organization started in Mindanao. Most tourists in Zamboanga come up here to pose for a photo along the tents.

Abong-Abong Park

For the faithful, Abong Abong Park is a pilgrimage destination especially popular during the Holy Week. Going up Mount Pulong Bato , its fourteen Stations of the Cross, each one about 50 to 75 meters apart, lead to a giant white cross dubbed as Cruz Mayor .

Pasonanca Trails & Viewing Decks

Further out of Pasonanca Park is the Pasonanca Natural Park . The protected area has trails for hikers and high grounds with magnificent views of the surrounding areas. With an area of 12,107 hectares, it serves as a major watershed in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

AROUND ZAMBOANGA CITY

Here are some of the tourist spots around Zamboanga City that aren’t located in downtown or even the Pasonanca Park. Some of these are just a few minutes from the city center, while others are quite far and might require a full day visit.

Rainbow Mosque

The most colorful mosque you’ll probably ever see is located at Barangay Sta. Maria, a jeepney ride away from Zamboanga’s downtown area. Formally called Masjid Al-Islamia , it has since been dubbed as the Rainbow Mosque due to its ultra-colorful façade. But it wasn’t always like this, its rainbow hues were painted on its white walls after the Marawi Siege as a call for peace and unity.

Yakan Village

Located about seven kilometers away from the city hall, off the west coast of Zamboanga City is a small colorful village populated by Yakans , a group of people who originated from Basilan during the seventies. And what colors their village are the textile weavings they do by hands. Traditionally, they weave semmek dresses for wearing, but now, they’ve included bags, table runners, blankets, and even shoes into their repertoire.

Taluksangay Mosque

On the east coast of Zamboanga, about half an hour drive from downtown, lies one of the more important mosques in the city. The Taluksangay Mosque was built in 1885 and is the oldest mosque in Western Mindanao. It is where Islam first spread in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Merloquet Falls

On the border of Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay lies one of the grandest waterfalls in Zamboanga Peninsula. Merloquet Falls is a two-tiered waterfall, rising to a height of about fifteen meters with a width of ten to fifteen meters. It is quite far from downtown Zamboanga, but it’s an excellent destination if you have a free day to spare in the city.

SHOPPING IN ZAMBOANGA

Those who travel to shop won’t be disappointed with Zamboanga. The city has a good combination of modern malls and local and traditional shops. Be sure to get enough baggage allowance for your flights back.

Canelar Barter Trade

One of the best places to shop in Zamboanga City is at the Canelar Barter Trade. It’s a open-air dry market selling mostly Malaysian textiles, clothes, and food stuff. Be sure to bring home batik shirts, colorful scarves, unique instant noodles, egg udang noodles for making mee goreng at home, Malaysian white coffee, teh tahrik , and Apollo chocolates.

Plaza Pilar

Located right across Fort Pilar, Plaza Pilar is a small area surrounded by a colonnade selling souvenirs, local foodstuff, and religious items. Be sure to get a bunch of apa , a crispy wafer-like rolled treat, when you visit. It’s also a good place to have a photo of the Fort with a foreground of flying pigeons—as there are lots in the area.

Magay Zamboanga Public Market

Near the Zamboanga City Hall is the hustle and chaos of the Zamboanga Magay Public Market. If you like market places, this is the most massive this side of the city. It’s a good place to see and buy local wares, and the cheapest place for street food.

Pettit Barracks Night Market

As evening arrives, Rizal Street closes to vehicular traffic and stalls upon stalls of ukay ukay clothes start to line the road. This Zamboanga night market stretches for two blocks, with food stalls hawking local street food like mee goreng on the rear part, perfect for after-shopping snacks. It actually reminds me of Baguio’s Harrison Road Ukay Ukay .

Shopping Malls

Zamboanga is a bustling city and most people from the neighboring islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi do their shopping here. And like all big cities, there are numerous shopping malls in the area—KCC Mall, SM City Mindpro, Southway Mall, South Supermall, Gaisano Grand Mall, CityMall Tetuan, to name a few.

ZAMBOANGA STA. CRUZ ISLAND TOUR

One of the most popular tourist spot in the city is the Zamboanga Pink Beach —one of only a handful in the world. And this is located in Sta. Cruz Island, which is just some minutes by boat away from downtown Zamboanga.

Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar

The first place tourists visit when going to Zamboanga’s Sta. Cruz Island is the sandbar that extends from Little Sta. Cruz Island. This is a small islet before the main island. Tourists are not allowed on the island, but they can go down on the sandbar if the tide is low and the sandbar is above water. Swimming is prohibited though, as the area has riptides which can sweep swimmers away.

Sta. Cruz Island Mangrove Lagoon

Before heading to the beach, a side-tour to the mangrove forest of Sta. Cruz Island is a worthy experience. You transfer to a smaller paddle boat, and ride around the mangroves where you can enjoy the scenery, have a taste of the freshest seagrapes or lato , and experience handling stingless jellyfishes.

One of the highlights of a Sta. Cruz tour is their vinta ride—those colorful boats you only see on textbooks. After the lagoon tour, a small vinta awaits visitors—one which you can actually paddle and ride around on.

Zamboanga Pink Beach

And finally, the main event of a Sta. Cruz Island tour, Zamboanga’s Pink Beach. The beach is actually not as pink as Barbie pink, but it only has a hint of pinkness when viewed on a certain angle, especially on the foreshore area where the sand is wet. This is due to crushed red corals that mix with the sand. Swimming and snorkeling is a good activity here, just be aware of the strong current.

Seafood Picnic Lunch

Depending on the tour you availed, it may or may not have a seafood lunch bundled with it. We booked ours with iTravel Tourist Lane and it does have an excellent seafood lunch on a cottage by the beach. Shrimp, crabs, roasted fish and squid, chicken barbecue, and fruits—it was one of the best meals I’ve had in Zamboanga.

Badjao Cemetery

Before going back to mainland Zamboanga, we dropped by the Badjao Cemetery in Sta. Cruz Island. The burial ground was used by the Badjao and Sama Bangingi tribes even before Sta. Cruz Island became famous as a tourist spot. The graves are small and are usually adorned with gravestones made of wood and small wooden boats—reflecting the Badjao’s seafaring way of life.

Scuba Diving at Sta. Cruz Island

Another activity that can be done in Sta. Cruz Island is scuba diving. The whole Sta. Cruz Island is actually surrounded by a reef wall, but diving isn’t allowed there due to very strong rip tides. The only approved diving site is located near the Little Sta. Cruz Island where there’s also a reef wall. As of the moment, there’s no dive operator or shop accredited by the LGU since the pandemic happened. I will update this once diving resumes in Sta. Cruz Island.

ONCE ISLAS ZAMBOANGA

One of the newest tourist spots in Zamboanga can be found in Barangay Panubigan, the Once Islas Island Hopping Tour . It is located about an hour away from downtown, but the travel time is very much worth it. I found the beaches here to be even better than at Sta. Cruz Island. While there are eleven islands in the vicinity, only three islands are open to tourist.

Bisaya Bisaya Island

The most adventure-filled island on the tour is Bisaya-Bisaya Island. It has a trail that circles around the half the island with beautiful rock formations, a natural tidal pool off one of its islets which you can reach by walking on a sandbar during low tide, and a pretty fine beach to boot too.

Sirommon Island

The island best for snorkeling is Sirumon Island. And there’s actually a raft that can take you to the best snorkeling spot. But if the tide’s too low, snorkeling a few meters from the shore is not that bad too. Plus, it has a sandbar too. The beach is also super fine.

Baung Baung Island

The final island on the list is Baung Baung Island. I like this island best for its waters, absolutely no current—a real pleasure to swim on. It also has a view deck that can be hiked up through 248 steps.

Moro Cuisine

Zamboanga’s culinary landscape is very different from most of the Philippines. Some of the best places to try these are at Andi’s Special Satti, Bay Tal Mal Restaurant, and Dennis Coffee Garden.

The city is famous for its curacha or spanner crab and there are several restaurants you can try to get the best out of it. A few of the famous ones are Alavar Seafood Restaurant (their Alavar sauce is a must) and Vista Del Mar Restaurant.

Malaysian Food

Being so close to Malaysia, their food has seeped in to the tables of Zamboangeños . We hunted for the best mee goreng and other Malay dishes this side of the Philippines and found them at Ole Ole Restaurant, Tinis Restaurant, and on makeshift stalls selling mee goreng along the streets.

Street Food

Zamboanga street food is also very unique. Be sure to try their local fishballs, coconut sugar-laden taho , crispy salvaro and apa , okoy, pastil , and experience having balut, beef chicharon , and mee goreng along the breakwater of R.T. Lim Boulevard.

Everything In Between

And if you want something less adventurous, Zamboanga City also has the usual fast food chains, plus restaurants serving traditional Filipino and Western fares—if you want Chinese, they have those too. We tried some of the best at Bar Code, Country Chicken Restaurant, and Hacienda De Palmeras Restaurant.

ZAMBOANGA HERMOSA FESTIVAL

The best time to visit Zamboanga City is during the month of October when they celebrate the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival . Here are some of the festival highlights.

Regatta De Zamboanga

This is the ultimate vinta boat race in Zamboanga City. Multitudes of vintas race across the waters fronting R.T. Lim Boulevard using only hand power or paddling.

The ultimate in shopping in Zamboanga City. ZAMPEX or the Zamboanga Peninsula Expo features the best of what the region offers—textiles, clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, furniture, and most importantly food products! This is usually held at a convention center, and the last one I attended was held at the Palacio del Sur , the event hall of Marcian Garden Hotel .

Asao Lechon Festival

Part of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the Asao Lechon Festival where lechoneros from all over Zamboanga City compete for the best lechon in the city, parading them, and letting everyone have a taste—for free! By the way, Asao is not a place but rather a chavacano term for grilled or roasted food.

Mascota De Zamboanga

The most beautiful terno gowns—inspired by opulent ladies during the Spanish era in Zamboanga City—competes for the annual Mascota De Zamboanga. Local artists sometimes take a year to create these masterpieces.

Zamboanga Hermosa Street Dance

The Zamboanga Hermosa Festival climaxes in a street dancing competition by various barangays in the city. The dancing spreads through the streets of the city before culminating at the Paseo Del Mar for their final performance.

October | Hermosa Festival and Regatta Festival 

If you want to time your visit to cultural revelries, there are three major festivals held in Zamboanga City for you to choose from: 

Hermosa Festival, one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, held all throughout the month of October. It features a colorful street parade merriment honoring the city's patron saint Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar).

Also called as "Fiesta Pilar", the celebration also comprises of different events such as art fairs, musical concerts, sporting events, Chavacano singing contest and a cultural program called "Wow Zamboanga" which aims to promote local culture, cuisine and talents.

Also held every month of October coinciding with the Hermosa Festival, the Regatta Festival or Regatta de Zamboanga features a fluvial racing contest comprising of the colorful iconic vintas of Zamboanga City.

A traditional outrigger boat of used by Mindanaoans for many centuries, a Vinta is highlighted by a vibrant hull with imaginatively sewn sails—truly personifying the Chavacano word of “Hermosa”, which means “beautiful”.

Spectators on this festival will get to witness these beautiful vintas sail on the waters of the Zamboanga Peninsula. In recent years, more than 1,000 vintas manned by two people has participated in this festival every year.

May | Flores de Mayo 

Likened to most "Flores de Mayo" held all over the country, but more grandiose, this month-long festival known also as "Flowers of May" is celebrated in Zamboanga with much fervor and enthusiasm.

Honoring the Virgin Mary, the festival reaches its climax on the last day or May when beautiful women and their dashing escorts parade through the streets of the city in what is known as the "Santacruzan".

This spectacle is made more beautiful by the presence of colorful floral decorations. As part of the festivity, flower offerings are done every day in every church.

As a major port city, Zamboanga City serves as one of the main transportation hubs of Mindanao and is easily accessible by land, sea, and air. 

While there are still no international flights available, Zamboanga International Airport (ZAM) is well-connected to other domestic cities by air.

Philippine Airlines flies daily to Zamboanga from Manila and Davao while Cebu Pacific Air has flights from Manila, Davao, Cebu, Tawi-Tawi, and Cotabato City.  

Daily buses from Ozamis, Dapitan, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and Pagadian takes travelers to Zamboanga Integrated Transport Terminal. The main bus line plying the route of Zamboanga City to other places in Mindanao is Rural Transit Bus .

Their buses are painted with a reddish and orange livery. Bus travel from Cebu and Bacolod is also possible on a Ceres Bus Liner via a RORO ferry connection. 

2GO Travel ferries passengers every Sunday from Manila's Pier 4 to Zamboanga City. Travel time is around 40-45 hours. 2GO also have passenger ships sailing to Zamboanga from Cebu, Dumaguete, Davao, Dipolog, Iloilo and General Santos. Schedules from these destinations vary from weekly to bi-weekly only.

The Port of Zamboanga is considered as an international port of entry. It services sea routes from Sandakan, Malaysia via the Aleson Shipping Company. Other sea travel options include Weesam , Montenegro and Aleson passenger ferries from Jolo in Sulu, Bongao in Tawi-Tawi and Isabela City in Basilan.

Zamboanga City is located at the southern end of the Pan-Philippine Highway or the Asian Highway 26. This means you can reach the city by car via this highway connecting to Pagadian, Cotabato, Davao, General Santos, and Surigao—basically linking to most of Mindanao. If you're coming from Davao, you can rent a car in Davao and drive yourself to Zamboanga City.

Zamboanga City is easily navigable and accessible to all sorts of vehicles. The leading mode of public transportation here are the jeepneys and tricycles, with some buses connecting commuters to neighboring cities.

In some areas, UV shuttle vans are also available the city center is located very near the airport making it easier for any traveler to get around the city upon arrival.

Zamboanga City is becoming a known destination for beach-goers because of this emerging eco-cultural tourism destination known as the "Once Islas" (pronounced as "On-se").

This group of islands is composed of eleven mostly uninhabited islands located off the coast of Barangays Dita and Panubigan, was first groomed as a tourist destination in July 2018.

Explore Sta. Cruz Island's Pink Beach and Mangroves

Known for having a beach with sand that glistens with hues of pink (the Pink Beach), especially during sunrise and sunset, Sta. Cruz Island is a nature protected island with visitors only allowed until 4PM. They're also strictly implementing the no-plastic and no-waste rule for visitors of the island. 

But during the day, visitors who try a Pink Beach excursion  can enjoy swimming in the surrounding crystal-clear waters and explore the island's mangrove forest and lagoon where one can see hundreds of non-stinging jellyfish. You can also ride a colorful vinta boat after your mangrove tour .

There is also a small group of Sama-Bangingi community residing in the island. A century old Muslim burial site can also be found on the island called Badjao Cemetery. An excursion in Pink Beach usually includes this in the itinerary.

Sta. Cruz island is around 20 minutes away by boat from the port near Paseo Del Mar in Zamboanga City.

It is highlighted by a spectacular wall of chiseled rock formations where you can climb up to enjoy the streaming cool waters. It can be reached by a short 15-minute hike from the highway in Sibulao. An excursion in Merloquet Falls is worth the time and budget.

Built in 1635 by the Spanish as La Fuerza Real de San Jose garrison, Fort Pilar is now named after Our Lady of Pilar—the patroness of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga and transformed into an open-air park and shrine commemorating Zamboanga's glorious past.

Inside the fort, a National Museum branch can be found where you can see an extensive collection of historical artifacts, memorabilia, and paintings. 

This market is the drop-off place of products imported from Indonesia and Malaysia coming from the country's backdoor route of Sulu Sea.

Inside you will find several interesting products comprising of colorful batik shirts, sarongs and dresses, hats, bags, scarves, souvenir items and even staple Malaysian grocery items such as Mie Goreng noodles and White Coffee.

Watch the Weavers of Yakan Weaving Village

Get to know the living heritage weaving of the Yakans, an indigenous group of people from Basilan. Watch mostly women weavers hand-wove colorful clothing, table runners, brassware, and batik adorned with old-style geometric patterns.

It's a highly-recommended cultural site included in a whole day tour in Zamboanga . You can also buy their works as a souvenir and as a means of supporting their traditional weaving. 

Built during the rule of the Americans, Pasonanca Park remains an idyllic setting right smack in the city center of Zamboanga.

Located approximately 7 kilometers from Fort Pilar, the park is also where the Instagrammable Zamboanga Tree House can be visited or spend the night in—on a reservation basis.

The park has an aviary, a botanical garden, a zoo and butterfly park, and three public swimming pools.

Located within the vicinity of Pasonanca Park is Camp Limbaga. Here, you will find 24 boy scout huts that appear like taller versions of the wigwam dwellings of Native Americans. These huts made of aluminum tins and concrete floorings are used boy scouts who want to go camping at the Park.

Camp Limbaga was named in honor of Zamboanga resident Scout Antonio Limbaga. He was one of the 24 Filipino boy scouts who died in a plane crash on their way to the 11th World Jamboree in Greece on July 28, 1963. 

Considered by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as a National Historical Site, Zamboanga City Hall was first built in 1905 and finished in 1907. The Zamboanga City Hall is a perfect example of a Filipino Colonial Architectural design.

One of the many still surviving heritage structures in the city, it was first used as the official residence of the US Military Governor of the then Moro Province before becoming Zamboanga's City Hall since 1937.

Across the city hall is Plaza Rizal, where a white statue of Dr. Jose Rizal stands. This cultural landmark is included in a heritage tour in Zamboanga .

Go Bird Watching at ZSCMT Bird Sanctuary 

A wetland located inside Zamboanga State College, the ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary welcomes visitors who are up for a bird watching activity.

ZSCMST, which stands for Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, manages the marsh where a variety of migratory bird species can be seen—just like in Candaba Swamp in Pampanga.

Built in early 2000, this cathedral is famous for its candle-like design and the marble statue of Immaculate Concepcion designed by Napoleon Abueva—a Philippine National Artist for Sculpture.

Beside the cathedral, you can enter a columbarium where you will see stained-glass images of the 12 apostles. Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is located at La Purisima Street in downtown Zamboanga.

During day time, one can view Sta Cruz and Basilan Island from here as well as the spectacular sunset. Come nighttime, the place becomes a lively spot with live bands, food stalls and vibrant street lamps lighting up the night. It's a well-known attraction included in a day trip in Zamboanga .

An hour and a half outside of Zamboanga City in Barangay Taluksangay, situates the oldest mosque in Western Mindanao.

Taluksangay Mosque is a must-see side trip destination in Zamboanga City because of its historical significance as the "first center of Islamic propagation in Zamboanga Peninsula”. Most of the residents of Barangay Taluksangay are from the Sama Banguingui people.

As a major port city dating back prior to the arrival of the Spanish, Zamboanga became a melting pot of various cultures. Muslims from the Middle East, Indonesia and Malaysia, Chinese and later the Spanish and even Visayan settlers, all made their way to the city.

The resulting effect to the local cuisine was a medley of flavors and textures, that up to now has made Zamboanga City a very underrated culinary destination.

Sama Bangingi Muslim Delicacies

When in Zamboanga city, one must try a plateful of assorted Muslim delicacies such as the ones passed from one generation of Sama-Bangingi ethno-linguistic group from the Greater Sulu Archipelago. These are Baulo—a baked rice delicacy usually served during Eid al-Fitr.

It also includes the Lokot-lokot which is made from rice flour pounded into powder and friend and formed into crunchy rolls. Other snack items included in these platters are the panganan, kalling, pitis patani, baulo tapung, and panyam bangingi.

Baked Imbao

In Zamboanga, clams are prepared in several diverse ways and one of the most popular is by baking it. Baked Imbao clams are made more tasteful with garlic and butter. It is the perfect appetizer to any dish.

Latal (Moro Cuisine)

What better way to get a taste of local Zamboanga cuisine than having a plateful of "Latal". Latal is a platter of a variety of Tausug native delicacies consisting of tiulah itim – a goat and beef stew dipped in black broth made from roasted coconut, beef kulma, beef piyassak, chicken piyanggang, kiyaliyah kapayah, fried fish and chicken kiyaliya. A bowl of Chupa Kulo is always expected to be served in the dining tables of houses located in the coastal towns and islands surrounding Zamboanga City. Chupa Kulo are snails simmered in coconut milk and squash. Eating it is a bit tricky though as you will need to suck the slimy yet scrumptious meat from the shell’s tiny hole. 

Chicken Piyanggang

A Tausug chicken curry dish cooked with burnt coconut paste making it appear color black. Don't be fooled by its un-appetizing appearance because it pops with a rich flavor.

No visit to Zamboanga City is complete without trying out Alavar Seafood Restaurant’s Curacha, a deep-sea giant crab that’s almost the size of a child’s face.

Using your bare hands, crack the shell open to reveal the thick and juicy meat inside. Don’t forget to smother it in the restaurant’s signature Alavar sauce!

You will be surprised at how many crabs you’ve licked clean, as the Curacha is a delight to the taste buds. Other must-try dishes at Alavar include the dinuguan cooked Chavacano style, prawn curry, grilled tuna jaw, pinakbet Chavacano, Paella Chavacano and many more.

Paseo del Mar and Palmeras Restaurant

Paseo del Mar and Hacienda Palmeras are popular spots to try the Knickerbocker. If compared to the halo-halo, one will find similarities as both are composed of diced assorted fruits topped with milk and crushed ice.

What makes it different though is the Knickerbocker is served with fresh fruits (usually: watermelon, apple, mango, pineapple and melon) and topped with milk cream, jelly cubes, and ice cream. It’s a bowl of refreshing dessert concept.

Tsokolate Restaurant

Aside from sweet cakes, pies and pastries, Tsokolate also serves hot plated meals to partner with their sweet-smelling and flavorful brewed coffee.

Mixing great food with a laidback ambiance, you also get to feast your eyes on the place’ cool interiors adorned with decorations like vinyl records and pop culture mementos. This amiable nook is the perfect spot to spend time with friends while enjoying a satisfying meal.

People come here for their perfectly brewed coffee, Tausug cuisine and traditional native pastries that originated from Sulu archipelago.

Don’t forget to try out a platter of Daral (comparable to a crepe but with a sugary coconut filling), Jualan (fried bananas that come with a sweetened dip), Pulihmandi (purple colored balls made of rice and covered with coconut shavings) and Sulu’s version of a pancake called apam.

Dennis Coffee Garden has locations at Labuan-Limpapa National Rd. and KCC Mall along Gov. Camins Rd. (near the airport), Zamboanga City.

Country Chicken 

One of the oldest restaurants in the city, Country Chicken serves arguably the best seafood paella in Zamboanga. So, don't skip this one. Aside from Filipino-Spanish cuisines, they also serve Italian inspired pizzas and pasta.

Harley’s Food and Craft Beers

The craft beer culture has also reached Zamboanga City. Thanks to this motorcycle-themed pub, diners can now enjoy Asian Halal Food and pair it with craft beer varieties from Fat Fauly's Handcrafted Ales and Lagers—a local brewery based in Iligan City. 

Bay Tal Mal

No 'Where to Eat in Zamboanga City' list is complete without the inclusion of Bay Tal Mal. Coined from the Arabic word ‘Bayt-ul Mal’ which means ‘House of Wealth’, Bay Tal Mal serves traditional Tausug and Halal Moro cuisines.

The Moroccan inspired interior sets an idyllic mood that’s perfect for feasting on Latal—a platter of a variety of Tausug native dishes. These go great with rice and other favorites such as chicken piyanggang and kiyaliya. 

Jimmy’s Satti and Johnny’s Morning Sun Satti

In Zamboanga, the Satti Ayam is considered as the “breakfast of champions”. Come sunrise and you will see locals flock to Jimmy’s Satti and Johnny’s Morning Sun Satti to start their day with a filling meal.

The Satti Ayam or Sati is a flavored barbecue (chicken, pork or liver) that’s eaten with a soupy, sweet and spicy sauce and rice wrapped in coconut leaves.

If you are a tourist arriving in the morning, you can head straight to either Jimmy’s Satti or Johnny’s Morning Sun Satti because both eateries are located just on the side of the road not far from the airport.

La Vista del Mar

A favorite among seafood lovers, this seaside restaurant serves many of the region’s heritage cuisines. A scene-stealing dish here is a healthy bowl of goodness called Ensalada Chamba.

It’s an appropriate play on the word chamba, which means ‘stroke of luck’ because the combination of the ingredients (namely diced mangoes, sliced eggplants, salted egg, cucumber and others) just happened to blend perfectly well.

If you want to mix a good meal and some live entertainment care of talented local musicians, then head out to Bar Code. They serve Filipino and local Tausug cuisines. 

For a hassle-free and convenient trip to Zamboanga City, it's important to read up on these practical tips. These will be very useful especially if it’s your first time in Zamboanga:

Philippine Peso (PHP) is the main currency used in Zamboanga City. Money Changers such as Sitti's Money Changer, MOHD Money Changer and Hesham's Money Changer can be found in the downtown area of the city as well at the airport and in SM City Zamboanga and KCC Mall.

Withdrawing money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) isn’t a problem in Zamboanga City, as leading banks such as BDO, BPI, Metrobank and Security Bank have several ATM outlets all over the city center. 

The language in Zamboanga is Chavacano (a Spanish-based Creolo language), but English, Tagalog and Hiligaynon are also widely spoken in all of Zamboanga City. However, it is still music to the ears of the locals if tourists exert effort in speaking their language.

Here are some useful Chavacano phrases you could use in conversing with residents of Zamboanga City. 

"Bienvenidos" - "Welcome"

"Buenas Dias and Buenas Noches" - "Good morning" and "Good evening"

"Muchisimas Gracias" - "Thank you very much"

"Cosa, Porque, Onde, Quando, Paquelaya" - "What, Why, Where, Where, When, How"

"Que tal lu" - "How are you?"

"Buen dia" - "Have a nice day"

Safety Concerns

Zamboanga City has been unfairly portrayed as an unsafe city. Truth is, Zamboanga City is considered a generally safe city no different than other cities in the Philippines.

Of course, be wary of isolated incidents of scammers and pick-pockets. Also, don’t let the sight of military checkpoints frighten you.

Zamboanga City is also known as “Asia’s Latin City” for a reason. Its main language, Chavacano, sounds a lot like Spanish. Its culture, like most of the country, is also heavily influenced by the Spanish colonizers. Even the local dance and songs hint Spanish roots. Its religious structures and landmarks are also heavily influenced by the Spaniards.

Zamboanga City is dubbed as a European city in Asia, thus the name “Latin City”. And it’s more than just a fancy city with a Latin Spanish European feel. Sample Curacha

Road tripping with friends is never complete without food tripping. As a foodie, I have had that as a principle.

I love Zamboanga City because it offers a diversity of delicacies, some local, some Spanish, and some Spanish with a twist of Zamboangeno. Some affordable, some exquisite, some locally unique. Here is one of Zamboanga’s food that you shouldn’t miss out on trying:

The curacha. The curacha is a Zamboangeno spanner crab that is cooked in so many ways. This crustacean variety is abundantly available in Zamboanga City’s markets. You can buy your family a whole kilo to cook for yourself or go out and fine dine-in in Zamboanga’s seafood restaurants.

Satti is a super spicy local dish that is, believe it or not, actually a local breakfast meal. But for tourists, satti is a nice bowl to try in the middle of summer, with all those flavors exploding! There’s always someone in the group who loves spicy food. However, if there’s none, why not give Satti a try? It’s never too late to become a spicy-food-lover convert.

Try Tetuan Lechon

If Quezon City has La Loma, Zamboanga has Tetuan – an area where you will find several shops selling their own version of Tetuan Lechon. Similar to Lechon Cebu, Zamboanga’s Lechon is tasty and a little bit salty.

Sample Knickerbocker!

It’s Zamboanga’s very own version of Halo-Halo. What’s the difference then? Knickerbocker has fresh tropical fruits in it with crushed ice, vanilla ice cream in the middle of the glass, and topped with a scoop of strawberry ice cream.

Visit Port Pilar Shrine

If you’re the type of traveler who never leaves a place without visiting at least one church to pray in, then you’re in luck. Zamboanga City has a lot of churches, some old, and some new. One of the most popular places of worship is Port Pilar Shrine, located within the 17th-century military defense fortress built by the Spanish colonial government in Zamboanga City.

Outside the eastern wall is a Marian shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of the city, pontifically crowned on 12 October 1960 via decree dating from 18 September 1960.

Visit The Metropolitan Cathedral of Zamboanga City

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Zamboanga City is a known church for its pure white exterior and unique architecture. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga. Make sure to keep your awe to yourself when gazing at this beautiful structure. Masses might be ongoing.

Visit The Taluksangay Mosque

The Taluksangay Mosque , on the other hand, is the oldest mosque in Western Mindanao. The Mosque was built by Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno in 1885 in the Barangay Taluksangay in Zamboanga City.

This sacred structure is prominent for its bright red domes. Taluksangay was the first center of Islamic propagation in the Zamboanga Peninsula. Tourists and pilgrims alike are attracted by this modernly designed mosque.

Explore Cawa Cawa Boulevard

Although one generally strolls around as a traveler, Zamboanga City offers a lot of beautiful parks perfect for jogging in the morning, strolling and picture-taking in the afternoon, or simply walking around on with a loved one.

The seaside Cawa Cawa Boulevard, for instance, is the perfect spot to get some fresh air and sunshine. Nearby the Boulevard is a port of some vinta, where you can rent for a small fee and sail on with friends or loved ones. Regardless if you’re walking or oaring, Cawa Cawa Boulevard is the perfect place to unwind.

Roam around Rizal Park

Meanwhile, there’s Rizal Park that’s located right in front of the Zamboanga City Hall. If you prefer strolling around in the urban rather than the seaside, Rizal Park should be your choice. The park is surrounded by restaurants and establishments as well.

Visit Pasonanca Park

But if you’re a nature lover or simply want to get away from the bustling streets, go drop by at Pasonanca Park. The public park has lots of facilities, which include a swimming pool and even a treehouse. The park property also houses a national park under the same name, which is managed under the Philippine National Integrated Protected Areas System.

Shop at Canelar Barter Trade Center

If Metro Manila has a Divisoria, Zamboanga City has a Canelar Barter Trade Center, a long street of crafts, clothes, souvenirs, food, imported Malaysian food products, and just about anything. Each stall is colorful and unique, so if you need to buy a souvenir there’s no need to look anywhere else. Haggling here is totally fine as well. It’s part of the Filipino culture.

Buy Souvenirs at Yakan Village

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for some ornaments to bring home to spice up your interior design, Yakan Village is abundant with artistic handicrafts and weaved mats, among others. The Yakans are known in the country as one of the best weavers, and you can buy directly from them in Yakan Village .

If you want to bring home a souvenir that is culturally and unmistakably Yakan, then make sure to drop by Yakan Village and support the Yakan weavers.

Visit the Pink Sand Beach

Asia’s Latin City isn’t done with you yet. It still has lots of wonders waiting to be explored. Zamboanga City houses the Great Santa Cruz Island and its well-known pink sands and clear water.

The Great Santa Cruz Island is also popularly known as the Pink Beach. The island has an amazing pink sand beach that came from pulverized red organ pipe coral that is mixed with the island’s white sand.

Discover Ancient Burial Grounds

Located in a heavily forested area of the Great Santa Cruz Island is a historical burial ground that, although inactive, still contains historical remnants that are culturally significant and interesting.

Visit the ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary

If you love wildlife and are a budding bird photographer, make sure to visit and watch birds in the ZSCMST fishpond, located in the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology campus compound. The area is also the first-ever documented breeding ground of the Great Egret in the country. The Great Egret is an elegantly white bird that can measure 3.3 feet tall and have a wingspan of almost 6 feet.

Visit Merloquet Falls and Congo Falls in Zamboanga City

Take your summer to a whole new level by frolicking on the cool waters of Merloquet Falls and Congo Falls in Zamboanga City. These two waterfalls are not sandy like the Great Santa Cruz Island, but hey, they’re relatively more secluded, and the vegetation and surrounding rock formations may just be the best backdrop for your next display picture on Facebook.

Stroll at Paseo del Mar

Another interesting natural tourist destination is Paseo del Mar. Paseo del Mar is also the perfect place to relax. It’s a beautiful habitat of diverse species of birds and mangroves, and with you and your friends roaring on the quiet water and the birds flying around above you, you’ll definitely forget all of your worries.

Island Hopping at Once Islas

Once Islas is a cluster of small and big islands located at Brgy. Panubigan and Brgy. Dati in Zamboanga City. This new eco-cultural tourism attraction opened to the public last July 2018.

It is composed of 11 islands along the Moro Gulf. Among the 11 islands, only 3 are opened to the public and can be reached by registering at the office of Barangay Panubigan. The islands that can be visited are Bisaya-Bisaya, Sirommon and Baung-Baung.

Visit the BPI Museum

As part of the historic branch’s opening on August 17, 2012, the BPI foundation unveiled the lifestyle museum on the second floor to celebrate the Zamboanga office’s centennial celebration. The museum takes people back to the beginning of the 20th century and depicts the life and culture of Zamboangueños at the end of the Spanish colonial period, and the beginning of the American period.

The BPI Museum houses antique furniture, vintage photographs, and an exhibit are found all throughout the six rooms and grand sala. There is an array of material on BPI history and the BPI Zamboanga branch’s history as well.

Visit El Museo de Zamboanga

The museum is located at Jardin Maria Clara Lobregat Complex inside Pasonanca Park in Zamboanga City.

“El Museo de Zamboanga” or the Zamboanga City Museum houses valuable artifacts, items, collections, and memorabilia, that have historical, social, and cultural significance to Zamboanga. The museum will enhance the interest of the people, particularly the young, for them to appreciate the past and diverse cultural personality of Zamboangueños and educate, enlighten, and immerse them in how the City came to be by re-presenting the “old” settings to the future.

Visit the Zamboanga City Hall

The Zamboanga City Hall is the seat of the local government of Zamboanga City. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines considers the city hall building a National Historical Site.

The construction of the historic building was commenced in 1905 by the Federal Government of the United States and was completed in 1907. The building served as the official residence of the US Military Governor of the Moro Province. It later became the seat of government of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu and the defunct Zamboanga province. Since 1937, the building has been functioning as the city hall of Zamboanga City. The Zamboanga City Hall has a Filipino colonial architectural design.

How to get to Zamboanga City

Now that we’ve mentioned five of the many, many perks of Zamboanga City, it’s about time we know how to get there, of course!

Zamboanga City is accessible by land, air, and water. Major carriers in the country fly to and from Manila, Cebu, and Davao daily. Flights usually last for only 1.5 hours, so no need to worry about getting plane sick.

Launched last October 27, 2020, AirAsia now flies 2x weekly from Manila to Zamboanga VV.

Asia’s Latin City is also very accessible by land. There are bus lines in Manila that travel to a roll-on-roll-off barge to get to the city.

Ships to Zamboanga City travel once a week. Ships from Manila travel to Zamboanga via Iloilo. Ship sails usually take longer to reach the destination, but hey, if you’re with your group of friends or loved ones, then take that as another great adventure.

Getting Around Zamboanga City

Now, once you’ve gotten to Zamboanga City, make sure to note that there are no taxis around. Transportation here comes in the form of walking, biking, riding a tricycle, or riding a jeepney. If you’re a tourist and don’t know the jeepney routes, it is recommended that you ride tricycles first. Make sure to negotiate the fare before getting in.

When you visit Zamboanga City, you must never skip a tour of El Museo de Zamboanga, Climaco Freedom Park, Fort Pilar Shrine, and Paseo del Mar to have your fill of the region’s storied past. Zamboanga City Tourist Attractions

Zamboanga city earned the moniker “Asia’s Latin City”, old colonial edifices that are great reminders of the Spanish colonial era are still well-preserved here and are great tourist attractions. In addition, the Chavacano language which has survived for over 400 years is widely spoken in this lively city. Chavacano is the only Spanish-based creole in Asia and one of the oldest creole languages in the world.

Contrary to what is usually portrayed in the news, Zamboanga city is generally safe for tourists especially the downtown area where it is highly guarded by the police and military.  The city is dappled by several shopping malls, restaurants,  towering commercial buildings and tourist spots .

TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN ZAMBOANGA CITY 

Fort pilar shrine and museum.

This 1635 Spanish garrison is by far the most splendid fortress I’ve seen in the Philippines.  The Royal Fort of Our Virgin Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza houses the shrine of The Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza, Spain the patroness of the city that is attached to the eastern wall.  Visit the Fort Pilar Museum inside the citadel that showcases artifacts from the sunken Grifim galleon, houseboats, fishing tools, indigenous marine life in Zamboanga and musical instruments, among others.

Vinta Ride at Paseo del Mar

The best spot to watch the stunning Zamboanga sunset is at Paseo del Mar.  From this area,  Basilan is visible. Paseo del Mar is a favorite hang-out of the locals; it is dotted with cement benches and a long walk way along the shore. You can also ride the vinta here during Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Fee is Php 50 for adult, Php 20 for student and Php 15 for a child.

Sta. Cruz Island (Pink Beach)

Head to Paseo del Mar in Zamboanga City and look for the City Tourism Office for assistance. Charter a boat to take you to Sta. Cruz Beach also known as Pink Beach of Zamboanga City for PHP 1,000 (good for 10 persons additional PHP 100 per person if exceeding 10 pax), travel time is about 15-20 minutes. Entrance fee is PHP 100 and terminal fee is PHP 5. If you are traveling alone, you can wait for other tourists or join other groups headed to Sta. Cruz Beach. Cottage rental starts at PHP 100 ( good for 6 persons. For larger group, you can rent a large cottage one for PHP 200 (good for 10 persons) and PHP 500, good for 15- 30 persons.

Zamboanga City Hall and Rizal Park

By far the most beautiful City Hall I’ve seen in the Philippines was built by the Americans in 1905 and completed sometime in 1907.

Cawa-Cawa Boulevard ( R.T Lim Boulevard )

Another great spot to watch the sunset, this is a recreational place where locals get to hang out, run, jog or picnic.

Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The candle-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the seat of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga.  It houses the Immaculate Conception statute designed by Napoleon Abueva, the National artist for sculpture.

Plaza Pershing

The old Plaza Pershing named after the late Governor John “Blackjack” Pershing had a pretty good face lift, it now boasts of a splendid dancing fountain at night.

Tetuan Church

The modest Tetuan Church also known as St. Ignatius Parish is located in Tetuan, which was derived by the Spaniards immigrants from a Moroccan town. It is said that originally, Zamboanga had two districts : Tetuan and Zamboanga. The Spaniards made St.Ignatious as Tetuan’s saint and created a parish sometime in 1863. For a period of 90 years, it is believed that only Jesuits served as Parish Priest of Tetuan Church .

How to get to Tetuan Church

You can take a jeep that passes by Tetuan Church or just hire a tricycle from downtown Zamboanga to take your there.  Tricycle fare is approximately PHP 30.

 Rio Hondo Village

Rio Hondo is a Muslim village popular for its houses on stilts.  Drop by the Barangay  Hall first before exploring the place so they can provide you a trusted guide.   Tipping the guide is highly appreciated.

How to get to Rio Hondo:

Take a tricycle to take you to Rio Hondo. Some tricycles might refuse to take you there as they are quite scared. It is highly suggested you introduce yourself to the Brgy. Captain at the Bgry. Hall.  You can get assistance there to tour you around the village.

Yakan Weaving Village

A recommended place to shop for souvenirs is the Yakan weaving center.   You can buy affordable intricately designed hand-woven Yakan fabrics made by the skillful Yakan tribe themselves.

How to get to Yakan Weaving Village?

Ride a jeep to Upper Calarian, ask the driver if it will pass by Gate 2 ( do not board the jeep that will pass by Gate 1, it will not pass by in this village).  Tell the driver you will get off at Yakan village and ask to be drop off there.  Travel time is about 15 minutes, fare Php 10.

Zamboanga Barter Markets

There are 4 barter markets in the city: Canelar, BBC Shopping Center, Port Area and Sta. Cruz Market . I was sable to visit Canelar because of my friend James who toured me around Zamboanga City the first time. It is the closest barter market near my guesthouse.  This is a perfect place to buy dirt cheap souvenirs, most of them are imported goods from Malaysia and Indonesia such as hocolates, coffee, candies and tea.  Colorful malongs , scarf, sarongs , bags, and batiks also abound here at reasonable prices.

Merloquet Falls

One of the most scenic falls in Western Mindanao is the picturesque  Merloquet Falls , other waterfalls to visit in Zamboanga city are the Dulian Falls and Busay Falls .  I missed this during my visit because I arrived a day after our group went on tour there. But I’ve asked them for the direction to get to Merloquet Falls.

How to get to Merloquet Falls?

Take a bus or van to Vitali. It may take 1 and a half hours  to 2 hours to reach Merloquet Falls and fare is roughly Php 170.  Tell the driver you will get off at Vitali checkpoint along the highway.  Charter a habal-habal (motorcycle) to take you to the jump off point of Merloquet Falls. Walk to the shed where you need to pay the entrance fee of Php 5 per person, parking fee is Php 10 for motorcycle and Php 20 for cars or other vehicles.  The Merloquet Falls can be reached by foot for about 15 minutes.

Boy Scout Ground at Pasonanca Park

The lush green surroundings and towering trees dotting the Pasonanca Park makes it an ideal respite from the bustling city life. An old tree house used to be a main attraction here.  Today, the aviary, the flower garden, the butterfly garden and the natural pools are frequented by visitors.  It boasts of 600 different species of orchids.

While you are at Pasonanca Park, don’t miss the Boy Scout Ground that was built in  memory of the 24 Filipino Boy Scouts who died in a plane crash while on the way to Greece for a Jamboree back in 1963.  Here, you’ll find the green tepees sprinkled around the lush grounds.

How to get to Pasonanca Park:

Take a jeep with Pasonanca signboard and get off at the Boy Scout Ground.  It takes about 20 minutes from the city proper, fare is roughly PHP 10.

Jardin de Maria Clara

While you are at Pasonanca park, don’t miss the Jardin de Maria Clara, a manicured garden named after the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat, which houses different flowers, butterflies and an aviary.

How to get to Jardin de Maria Clara

From Zamboanga City proper, ride a jeep en route to Pasonanca and alight at the Boy Scouts grounds.  Jeep fare is roughly PHP 10 pesos and travel time is approximately 20 minutes.

Climaco Freedom Park

Climaco Park in Sitio Abong-Abong has a majestic panoramic view of Zamboanga city. Abong-abong houses Mt. Pulong Bato, the city’s largest mountain. Freedom Park on the other hand is a burial site of the slain Mayor Cesar Climaco.

How to get to Mt.Pulong Bato in Sitio Abong-Abong :

You can charter a habal-habal (motorcycle) to take you to Mt. Pulong Bato in Sitio Abong-Abong from Pasonanca Park.  Negotiate with the driver, but normally fare is Php 30.

Taluksangay Mosque and Village

How to get to Taluksangay Mosque and Village

Ride a jeep to Taluksangay near Plaza Pershing. Fare is Php 14, travel time is about half an hour.

ZAMBOANGA  CITY TRAVEL TIPS

⊗  If you are traveling in groups, the best way to get around is by hiring a van.  Visit the Zamboanga City Tourism Office at  Paseo del Mar.

⊗  There are no resorts in Sta. Cruz Beach, it is only good a for  day trip.  Bring your own food and drinks as there are no stores in the island.  If you are alone and on a budget, visit during the weekends, there is a good chance you can join other groups.  During weekdays, you will most likely need to charter a boat for PHP 1,000.

ZAMBOANGA CITY TRAVEL GUIDE with Requirements, Itinerary & Budget

The pandemic drained almost all the color out of our little worlds. For most of us, we burned over two years cooped up inside four bleak, off-white walls, isolated from all this planet’s vibrance to which travel used to treat us. For most of us, the only trips we made were to the grocery. The only flights we took were of fancy. As for me, when I let our imagination run wild, it usually takes me back to Zamboanga.

When we think of Zamboanga, we think of colors. And we’re not just talking about the iconic vinta that has become a symbol for this region! From the subtle rosy hues of its Pink Beach to the delicious bright orange plates of curacha crabs to the vibrant costumes at the Hermosa Festival, Zamboanga is definitely one of the brightest, most colorful destinations in the Philippines.

UNDERSTANDING ZAMBOANGA CITY

The term “Zamboanga” can refer to many geographical areas. Zamboanga City is the biggest urban hub in Region IX, called Zamboanga Peninsula, which is also made up of the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay and four other cities (Dapitan, Dipolog, Pagadian, and Isabela de Basilan).

In the airline industry, Zamboanga most often refers to the city, where the Zamboanga International Airport (ZAM) is located. But for the purpose of this travel guide, when we mention Zamboanga, we mean the city.

The name Zamboanga is most likely to have come from Samboangan , which means “mooring place”. Samboang is a Sinama term referring to poles used for mooring. Other sources claim that its etymology leads to Indonesian jambangan , which means a place for flowers, which is why Zamboanga is also called “City of Flowers”.

Zamboanga City’s history as a settlement is deep, running all the way to the 12th century when the Subanon (Subanen) people reached the area. Over the next centuries, many Tausug, Yakan, Sama-Banguingui and Sama-Bajau people moved here from the Basilan and the Sulu archipelago. When Islam arrived, it became the dominant religion.

When the Spaniards began its colonization of the Philippines, they chose Zamboanga as a military stronghold in Mindanao, paving way for Christian settlers. Fort Pilar was later established to defend the settlement.

This long history led to the complex, eclectic mix that is Zamboanga. Its proximity to Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia also allows a flood of influences to seep through. This diversity is evident in almost all aspects of its culture, including its languages, religions, cuisines.

Today, Zamboanga City is a highly urbanized, chartered city. It is politically independent, although for statistical purposes, it is clustered with Zamboanga del Sur. It also serves as the region’s economic, educational, and cultural hub.

Here are some essential bits about Zamboanga that you might need to know before your trip, especially if you’re coming from abroad.

• Location: Zamboanga City, Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula), Philippines. Coordinates: 6°54′29″N 122°04′35″E
• Nicknames: Asia’s Latin City, City of Flowers.
• Time Zone: UTC+8 (Philippine Standard Time). If you’re visiting from Malaysia or Singapore, Zamboanga (and the entire Philippines) is in the same time zone.
• Language: The most commonly spoken is Chavacano or Chabacano, a Spanish-based Creole, which is a mix of Spanish and other native languages.
• Currency: Philippine Peso (PHP, ₱).
• Modes of Payment: Bring cash. You’ll need it for most transportation options and small purchases. Many establishments accept credit cards and GCash, but most still prefer good old-fashioned cash.

ZAMBOANGA CITY TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Zamboanga City is under ALERT LEVEL 1, as of this writing. For leisure travelers from similar Alert Level or lower, here are the travel requirements:

FOR FULLY VACCINATED

• valid government ID
• vaccination card

FOR NON-FULLY VACCINATED

• negative RT-PCR test result from an accredited laboratory, issued 120 hours or 5 days before departure.

FOR TRAVELERS FROM AREAS UNDER HIGHER ALERT LEVEL or other areas with known cases of concerning variants (according to IATF), here are the requirements:

• negative RT-PCR test result from an accredited laboratory, issued 120 hours or 5 days before departure
• negative rapid antigen test result from an accredited lab, issued within 24 hours prior to departure

Children/Minors under eighteen (18) years are exempted from testing requirements. But all travelers may be subject to random antigen testing upon entry into the city.

HOW TO GET TO ZAMBOANGA CITY

Zamboanga City and nearby municipalities are served by Zamboanga International Airport (ZAM), which also serves as the gateway to Basilan. Because there are no direct flights from Luzon or Visayas to Bongao, most Tawi-tawi-bound travelers also make a transfer at Zamboanga Airport.

Most local airlines operate flights to Zamboanga from Manila. But if you’re after affordable fares, AirAsia flies daily to Zamboanga City. Travel time is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

I did a quick search for flights and found fares like these:

Each booking comes with a complimentary 7kg carry-on baggage allowance. This can be enough for a weekend trip. But note that this does not yet include check-in baggage allowance.

For a worry-free and more comfortable journey, you can also add a Value Pack , which includes 20kg check-in baggage allowance, standard selection, a meal, and Tune Protect insurance (for baggage delay & 1 hour on-time guarantee protection). Meanwhile, their Premium Flex option allows you to change the date and time of your flight up to two times.

If you’re coming from Manila, AirAsia’s Zamboanga flights operate from NAIA Terminal 4.

Upon Arrival at the Airport

After disembarking, you will be led to the Arrival area, where you’ll be waiting for your check-in baggage (if you have any).

As soon as you exit the Arrival Hall, you’ll notice a white tent immediately in front of it. This is where they check the entry requirements. The process is pretty straightforward. In our experience, they just asked which part of the Philippines we flew from and asked to see our ID and vaccination card. In just a few minutes, we were through.

However, a line may start forming towards the checking tent, so add some time allowance if you need to catch a certain schedule.

Zamboanga Airport to City Center

Zamboanga Airport is located within the city center, so you don’t need to worry about long transfer times. After you emerge from the checking tent, you’ll be greeted by taxi drivers, offering to take you to the city. You may also walk all the way to the gate, outside of which you’ll find a line of tricycles.

According to our local friends, these usual rates should apply:

• Taxi: Flagdown rate, P40. Cost to the City Hall area should be around P80.
• Tricycle: P20 for the first km, P5 per additional km

However, the driver might try to strike a deal with you regarding the cost. It is quite common to be charged P150-200 for the trip.

WHERE TO STAY IN ZAMBOANGA

Most hotels in Zamboanga are concentrated in two key areas: the city core (which is closer to the seaport) and the area near the airport. Both harbor a lot of dining and shopping establishments. Both have its share of budget-friendly options (although there are more expensive properties near the airport). Both are easily accessible and are not too far away from each other. However, during rush hour, traffic in between can be a problem. For this reason, which is better depends on your itinerary.

If the reason you’re in Zamboanga is primarily to see the Pink Beach or go on a day trip to Basilan, then stay at the heart of the city. But if your target destinations are mostly north of the city — say Once Islas and Merloquet Falls — or you’re the type who doesn’t want to worry about missing your flight out, then the area near the airport makes more sense.

Either way, generally, accommodations in Zamboanga is much more affordable than in other highly urbanized cities in the Philippines. Average rate for a double or twin room at a business hotel should play within P1500-P1800 per night. But you can find a room for less than PhP 1500, even lower when there are ongoing promos.

HOW TO GET AROUND ZAMBOANGA CITY

By public transportation.

The three most usual modes of transportation within the city are the jeepney, the tricycle, and the taxi. But because we didn’t want to deal with the routes, we ended up using the tricycle most of the time. Tricycles, usually shortened to “tricy” in this part of Mindanao, are the most common.

Ideally, here’s the approved tricycle fare:

• P20 for the first kilometer
• P5 per succeeding km.

That said, the reality on the ground is different. While many tricycle drivers followed the fare matrix, we also encountered those who, when asked how much the fare is, would reply with: “Kayo na po ang bahala. (It’s up to you.)” This makes things awkward especially if you really have no idea at all. To be fair, this is not exclusive to Zamboanga. It happens in many other parts of the country.

But based on experience, we were usually charged P40-P50 per person for a tricycle ride. We were also charged P75 per person for longer distances (e.g. airport area to seaport).

Taxis are also available but they are not as ubiquitous. Flagdown rate is P40.

Whatever mode you pick, take the rush hour traffic into consideration especially if you’re trying to catch a flight or boat.

By Packaged Tour

Zamboanga City is rich in history, so the best way to get around is to join a guided tour. This way, you’ll have a better understanding and appreciation of the attractions. We’ve only tried two tour companies so far: Buenas Travel & Tours and iTravel Tourist Lane .

Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, join-in tours are not advisable as of this writing. Most tour packages available we found are for private groups, which can be pretty pricey if you’re a small group of 2-4. For example, a half-day city tour could cost you P3150/head if you’re a party of 2 but only P1350/head if you’re a group of 10 or more.

Regardless, get in touch with them for a quotation or just to check the latest policies on group tours because things might have changed since our visit.

But below are some of the most popular tours that you might want to consider.

Pink Beach (Grande Sta. Cruz Island)

Off the coast of Zamboanga Peninsula lies an island that, when kissed by the sun, glows with a natural rosy blush. Hailed by the National Geographic as one of the World’s 21 Best Beaches in 2017, Pink Beach is Zamboanga City’s most popular tourist attraction.

To manage your expectations, the pink hue isn’t vivid or bright. From afar, the sandy shore looks like the usual white beach, but the closer you get, the pink taint becomes more apparent. The sand’s pale pink tint is the result of the weathering of the red organ-pipe corals (tubipora musica) that were brought to the shore by the waves.

Zamboanga City’s Paseo del Mar is the main jump-off point to the island and its Pink Beach. Visitors can hire a tricycle from the city center to Santa Cruz Island Ferry Terminal in Paseo del Mar. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes.

But the Pink Beach is but a narrow section of the island, which is dominated by a vast lagoon, covered with mangroves, nourishing wildlife and promoting biodiversity. To explore it, you may join a separate guided boat tour. You’ll learn about the types of mangroves and meet upside-down jellyfish . Don’t leave without grabbing an opportunity to row an iconic vinta!

You may also drop by Little Santa Cruz Island, a completely separate islet, for a quick sandbar experience. Quick because you’re only allowed to stay here for 10 minutes.

Here are some essential info about visiting Santa Cruz Islands.

• Register in advance! The number of visitors is strictly regulated.
• Registration and boat service start at 7:00 AM. Overnight stay is not permitted and only day tours are allowed.
• Boat fee to Pink Beach is P1000, good for up to 10 passengers. If your group is smaller, you’ll still need to pay the same amount.
• To join a lagoon boat tour, let the boatmen that brought you to Pink Beach know. They will take you to a small community near the entrance to the lagoon. This transfer will cost you an additional P200.
• At the lagoon entrance, you’ll be transferring to a smaller “yellow boat.” Rental of each yellow boat costs P300, good for 2 passengers.
• Lagoon tour guide fee is P300. A tour guide can lead up to 5 boats max. You can team up with other boats so you could split the guide fee.
• You can only arrange a tour before 12 noon! They won’t be accepting any booking beyond that time. Please follow the rules and regulations when exploring. The Grande Santa Cruz Island, together with the smaller Little Santa Cruz Island, is a protected area.
• Single-use plastic is strictly prohibited in the island. Junk food in plastic containers, plastic candy wrappers, plastic straws, sachets, single-use water bottles, and plastic bags are not allowed. Bring a reusable water bottle. If you must bring food, you need to place them in reusable containers. They thoroughly inspect all bags before boarding.

Once Islas Cruise (11 Islands)

Once Islas is a string of islands off the eastern coast of Zamboanga City. Not all islands are open to the public, but those that are accessible are great for swimming, sunbathing, and further exploring. There are designated snorkeling spots for those who want to take a peek into the underwater scene. The four islands that are accessible to the public are the following:

• Bisaya-Bisaya Island , with white beach and scenic rocky cliffs. Nearby island also has a natural pool, good for a dip. Buko juice is available.
• Buh-Buh Island , known for a seaside mosque.
• Baung-Baung Island , with fair sand too.
• Sirommon Island , often the lunch stop. Also blessed with fine white sand and a viewpoint.

The islands are only open for day trips. A limit of 200 visitors per day is implemented, so advance registration is required. You need to book online through [email protected] one week before your planned visit. Guidelines and steps will be emailed upon booking inquiry. Walk-ins are not entertained.

The jump off point is the Panubigan Ferry Terminal, roughly 1.5 hours from the city center.

Zamboanga City Tour

The map of the city center and surrounding areas is dotted with several historic and recreational sites that will provide a glimpse into the city’s colorful past. You may visit these independently by taking public transportation, but these are also the common stops of organized tours.

• El Museo de Zamboanga, which has two galleries, showcasing the history and culture of the city.
• Pasonanca Park, a lovely spacious green space where you’ll find Scout Limbaga campsite, a convention center, an amphitheater, an aviary, a floral garden and butterfly sanctuary, and public swimming pools.
• Climaco Freedom Park , named after the late Zamboanga City Mayor Cesar Climaco, a local hero who was assassinated in 1984.
• Fort Pilar Shrine and Museum , dating back to the 17th century, originally serving as a Spanish military defense post. It cradles an open-air 18th-century Marian shrine — Our Lady of the Pillar — with an altar and stone seating for the devotees who want to pray and reflect.
• ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary, a protected area, where great white egrets breed and thrive, located inside the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.
• Paseo del Mar , a waterfront recreational park lined with souvenir shops, local food vendors, and eateries. Great view of the sunset, too!
• Zamboanga City Hall , recognized as a National Historical Site. It was originally used as the official residence of the US Military Governor of the then Moro Province.

Heritage Shops & Markets

These shops are also often included in city tours, but we’re giving them a dedicated section to highlight them better.

• Canelar Barter Trade Center, a shopping center brimming with a wide array of local and imported goods (from Malaysia and Indonesia), including souvenirs, food, clothes, fabrics, and accessories.
• Yakan Weaving Village , which harbors local shops selling traditional products and practical accessories including bags, purses, pencil cases, and even yards of Yakan fabrics. You can also watch (or try for yourself!) the traditional process of Yakan weaving.
• Aderes Flea Market , located in Guiwan, where you can purchase freshly caught curacha (spanner crabs, a local delicacy), lobsters, shellfish, and other seafood!

Merloquet Falls

Located about two hours away from the city center, near the boundary with Zamboanga Sibugay in the north and Zamboanga del Norte in the west, the magnificent two-tiered Merloquet Falls is regarded as one of the most beautiful not only in the region but in the country. The most photographed is the wide terraced drop, creating magical, intricate textured cascades instead of just a smooth straight drop.

Day Trip to Malamawi Island

Malamawi Island is not in Zamboanga City. It is part of Isabela City in neighboring Basilan province. But is easily accessible from Zamboanga City’s port.

Malamawi Island has a stunning white beach on its northern edge. Formerly called Malamawi White Beach, it is now a private beach and has been renamed Pahali Resort .

Day trips are allowed but you’ll need to purchase the cheapest package they have, which is a seafood tray (P2,999, good for 5 pax). Yep, even if you’re solo or duo, you’ll need to order it to avail of a day trip. But it’s delicious!

To book, just message the resort via its Facebook page . Upon arrival in Isabela City, you may register at the Tourist Assistance Center or you may also go straight to the resort.

To get to Malamawi/Pahali Resort from Zamboanga sea port, take the ferry or fast craft to Isabela City. Travel time is around 1 hour 40 minutes. After exiting Isabela Port, turn right to James Strong Boulevard, until find a waiting shed to your right. Here, board a boat to Malamawi Carbon Port (P10). Take a tricycle to Pahali Resort. Fare is P50 per person, one-way.

WHERE TO EAT IN ZAMBOANGA

One of the best things about Zamboanga City is the sheer diversity of what it has to bring to the dining table. Thanks to its colorful and complicated history, its cuisine has been a true reflection of the melting pot that the city has become over the years. Here are some of the most iconic food spots that you shouldn’t miss and what to order.

• Alavar Seafood Restaurant , best known for curacha (spanner crabs) in their signature Alavar sauce, made with coconut milk, aligue (crab meat), and various spices. It’s quite pricey, though. A serving costs P1500-P1700 per kilo, but it’s good for at least four persons. An order can have two to four crabs, depending on the size.
• Bay Tal Mal , a Moro restaurant. Order their latal (P749), which is a platter of 10 native dishes, from tiyula itum (beef in black soup, made from charred coconut) to beef kulma (similar to the familiar beef curry).
• Dennis Coffee Garden , whose roots can be traced back to Jolo, Sulu. It serves traditional Tausug coffee called kahawa sug and a smorgasbord of native merienda items or bangbang sug (P65 each), from rice cakes to deep fried bananas and sweet potatoes.
• Jimmy’s Satti , a favorite among locals who crave satti, similar to chicken or beef satay, dipped in a sweet and sometimes spicy sauce. A local friend also recommended Andy’s Special Satti .
• Hacienda de Palmeras Hotel and Restaurant , credited as the inventor of knickerbocker , a cold dessert similar to halo-halo, but with an assortment of fruits like mango, watermelon and pineapple, topped with strawberry ice cream.
• Tetuan , where you’ll find a street lined with kiosks selling kilo after kilo of delicious lechon! One of the most popular is Prince Tasty Lechon, whose recipe includes calamansi, onions, garlic, pepper and bay leaf. P550 per kilo, P350 per half-kilo.

As you explore, don’t forget to grab some street food. While Pinoy faves like banana que, fish balls, and kwek-kwek are available, you’ll also stumble upon chikalang (purple rice cake similar to pilipit or karioka), pastil (empanada), and mee goreng , especially at hotspots like the RT Lim Boulevard and Paseo del Mar .

Here’s a sample 4-day 3-night ZAMBOANGA CITY itinerary with breakdown of expenses. Please note that this itinerary below assumes the following:

• You’re a party of 4, splitting some of the costs.
• You’re staying at a hotel in the city center.
• You’re using public transportation DIY-style for this itinerary. While we recommend joining a guided tour, it’s going to be much more costly because we have yet to confirm that join-in group tours are allowed. I don’t know which area exactly you will be staying so I set the budget for short-distance tricycle ride at P30/pax. While there is a lower set fare, it’s best to have an allowance to compensate for instances when you get charged more.

When is the best time to visit zamboanga city.

January to May , the driest period.

Zamboanga is a year-round destination. Unlike most regions in the Philippines, the weather patterns here are stable and it is not usually battered by typhoons. That said, the best period for tourists is January to May because it’s when the chances of rain are lowest.

The rainiest period is June-November, peaking in October . But the amount of rainfall in Zamboanga is still considerably low compared to other regions, so it shouldn’t cause you much concern. Besides, its wettest month October is one of the best times to visit the city because it’s when the Hermosa Festival happens!

Hermosa Festival is the city’s fiesta , in honor of their patron saint La Virgen Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza, which is believed to be miraculous. It’s a month-long festivity that builds up to October 12, the actual feast day. The first two weeks of October are filled with exciting activities like the Regatta, a vinta race!

How to say common greetings and phrases in Zamboanga City

The most commonly spoken language in Zamboanga City is Chavacano (or Chabacano), the only Spanish-based creole language in Asia. It is like the “love child” of Spanish and Filipino languages. While most vocabularies of the Chavacano varieties are borrowed from Spanish, the grammatical constructions or structures generally follow other Philippine languages.

Start from the basics such as greetings and useful phrases that you can use while in the city. It is also a good way to interact with the locals and learn more about their culture.

How’s the data signal in Zamboanga City?

Globe and Smart are strong in the city center but becomes spotty and unreliable in the islands and other remote corners of city. Based on our experience.

We had no data signal for most of our Once Islas tour, especially at Panubigan Port. It suddenly pops up in some islands but they don’t usually last, for some reason.

What power plug type is used in Zamboanga City?

110V, 60Hz. Type A sockets are most common. Plugs have two flat pins.

ZAMBOANGA CITY TOURIST SPOTS (Best Things to Do and Top Tourist Attractions)

The great sta. cruz island.

The Great Sta. Cruz Island is probably the most popular tourist spot in Zamboanga City. It is situated just about 20 minutes by boat from Paseo del Mar. It’s a protected area, home to the famous Pink Sand Beach of Zamboanga.

Entrance fee is only Php20 but you will have to rent a boat to cross the island. Boat fare is Php1,000 good for up to 10 passengers. Terminal fee is Php5.

The Great Sta, Cruz Island Lagoon

If you visit the Great Sta. Cruz Island, make sure you also explore the Great Sta. Cruz lagoon. It’s best to explore during high tide so you’ll be able to appreciate its beauty more.

Paseo del Mar

Paseo del Mar is one of the best places to chill in Zamboanga City. You can catch the best sunset in this park as well as sample some of the best food in the city. A must-try is the knickerbocker and the tempura sold in one of the food stalls inside Paseo del Mar.

Rio Hondo is the ground zero of the Zamboanga siege happened in 2013. It is home to a huge Muslim population in the city.

Yakan Weaving Village

Yakan Weaving Village is one of the must-visit places in the region. It is located in Upper Calarian in Zamboanga City. A group of Yakan weavers showcases their amazing craftsmanship in making colorful and intricate patterns using pineapple and abaca fibers.

Zamboanga City Hall

Zamboanga City Hall is not just a seat of local power but also an attractions to many locals and visitors due to its picturesque facade. During Christmas season, it is well-lighted which make it even more attractive during the night.

Freedom Park / Helmet Park Zamboanga

The Freedom Park also known as the Helmet Park is the memorial and the final resting place of slain Mayor of Zamboanga City, Cesar C. Climaco. 

Merloquet Falls

Merloquet Falls is one of Zamboanga City’s hidden and unspoiled natural attractions located at Sitio Merloquet, Barangay Sibulao in the east coast of the city. 

Once Islas is a new eco-cultural tourism attraction in Zamboanga City which opened to the public in July 2018. It’s located within the boundaries of Barangays Panubigan and Dita, about an hour away from the city proper. As the name suggests, it’s a group off 11 beautiful islands waiting to be explored. 

Pasonanca Park

Pasonanca Park is a public park in Zamboanga City located about 7kms from the city proper. Some of the attractions inside the park are: Butterfly Park in La Jardin Maria Clara Lobregat, Zamboanga City Museum, Pasonanca teepees and tree house. 

ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary

Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (ZSCMST) Bird Sanctuary is a protected sanctuary in Zamboanga City home to some local and migratory birds.

The Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (Royal Fort of Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza), populary known as Fort Pilar is a military defense fortress located in the heart of Zamboanga City. It is now regional museum of the National Museum of the Philippines. In its eastern wall is a Marian Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of Zamboanga City.

SUGGESTED ZAMBOANGA ITINERARY

Day 1 Zamboanga Travel Guide Itinerary – Zamboanga Walking Tour (Fort Pilar to Zamboanga City Hall), Lunch in Barcode, dinner somewhere in Fort Pilar or try the Curacha of  Alavar Restaurant. If you arrive in Zamboanga early, you can also visit Pasonanca Park on the first day and have dinner at Country Chicken.

Day 2 Zamboanga Travel Guide Itinerary – Wake up early and try Andy’s Satti. Head your way to Sta. Cruz Island and sepnd a day in the island. Go back to the mainland, wait for the amazing sunset at Paseo del Mar. Dinner at Dennis Coffee Garden.

Day 3 Zamboanga Travel Guide Itinerary – Take a bus to Merloquet Falls early in the morning. Go back to the city and visit the Yakan weaving village or spend a day at Once Islas.

Zamboanga: My Visit to the Latin City of Asia

Perhaps it can be said that no other city in the Philippines piqued my curiosity as much as Zamboanga in the western tip of the island of Mindanao . There’s just so many things that differentiate it from the rest of the country. Nevertheless, I had to think twice about coming here. My main consideration was not really about the sights to see or the things to do but more about the reputation. As far as I can remember, newspaper datelines containing the name “Zamboanga” usually detail not so pleasant news. Not all of them paint an accurate picture of the city however – Zamboanga can actually be used to describe other points in the peninsula rather than just the city and most of those incidents that appeared in the papers actually did not occur in the city.

The city of Zamboanga is distinctive in a couple of things. First is their language – Chavacano. It’s an interesting Spanish-based creole that has mosly died off in other parts of the Philippines. In Zamboanga, it lives on and is commonly used in the public sphere. It was interesting to see the same print ads with the same celebrity endorsers that I often encounter in Manila but translated to the heavy Spanish slant that is Chavacano.  The other thing about Zamboanga is of course, its proximity to the far reaches of the Philippines. By far reaches, I am referring to the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi; places that are only a few hundred miles away but seemingly a lot farther based on people’s perceptions. This means that the city is a melting pot of cultures, and the modernist cathedrals, temples and grand mosques in the downtown area attest to this. To a greater extent, Zamboanga of course also functions as a jumping point to Sabah, Malaysia, and as of this writing there are plans to re-start flights between the city and Sandakan in April.

I arrived in Zamboanga on a Sunday morning, fresh from a bout of rain. As the plane made a sharp turn above Basilan, I could spot the city from up above. Despite being one of the Philippines’ largest city by population, Zamboanga is not so dense and it was evident through the relatively scattered urban landscape. The first thing that greeted us upon landing was the distinctive airport terminal building. I remember seeing a scale model of the Islamic-inspired terminal building in Paoay when I visited the Malacanang of the North. Zamboanga’s airport was apparently one of Marcos’ pet projects. Nowadays, it serves as a good example on the usage of various local architectural styles in public buildings. It’s just a shame it’s not being applied to other government buildings.

Zamboanga’s city center is actually pretty compact. From the airport, it was walking distance to Zamboanga city’s largest hotel, the Garden Orchid Hotel where we stayed. There were no taxis in the city but I saw plenty of tricycles. Fares vary and depends on the passenger’s negotiating skills. But it’s not expensive. At most, a ride to the city center from the airport takes only around 10 minutes or so.

Many of the city’s points of interest are actually found here. Alighting in the Zamboanga City Hall , places like Plaza Pershing and the Lantaka Hotel, from where one can get excellent views of Basilan, are just within walking distance. From what I observed, the city center follows pretty much the same style as other provincial cities with the city hall or ayuntamiento being fronted by a small park or plaza . A farther 10 minute or so walk is Fort Pilar , perhaps the most famous of Zamboanga’s attractions. Also known as the Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza, it was originally built in the 1600’s. It was later on rebuilt in the 1700’s and was later used by various occupying forces such as the Americans and Japanese. There is a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Pilar built on the eastern wall some time in the 1700’s. This remains to be a popular worship spot. Even muslims come to pray here. We had also attempted to enter the National Museum which is located inside the fort but it was under renovation at the time of my visit.

They say that Zamboanga is one of the driest major cities in the Philippines and I wouldn’t be surprised. I came in February and it was still scorching hot. Typhoons are said to be a rarity here and earthquakes virtually nonexistent. Since it was getting to be quite warm, we decided to have brunch at around 11AM. We decided to try satti – a local specialty. I was most curious to try this since I live in Singapore and am no stranger to satay which is almost exactly the same. The major difference is that satti is a lot smaller. It takes maybe around 8 to 10 sticks plus a cup of rice to work out as a decent meal. It got even warmer during the afternoon. It was a good thing we used this time to visit Pasonanca Park . Said to be the “Little Baguio” of Zamboanga, owing this monicker to the summer hill retreat in Luzon, it’s nowhere as cool as Baguio though the lush vegetation provided some much needed shade. Of note here is a treehouse and the boy scout grounds. We also passed by the Maria Lobregat Garden , making a stop at the butterfly park on the way there. Granted the admission was merely Php 5 but there wasn’t really much to see inside the butterfly garden.

Before ending the day, we stopped by the Yakan Weaving Village . I had read about it in a magazine and was hoping to chance upon a weaver wearing her tribal costume. In the end, I did encounter a weaver but to my dismay, she wasn’t wearing the local attire. The products being weaved here – scarves, tablecloths and purses – reminded me of the same style of tais weaving being done in East Timor. I wondered if there’s any connection between the two.

The next day, we pretty much had nothing to do. So it was a good thing that Harvey, a friend from college, texted me. He learned that I was in Zamboanga through my Facebook posts and offered to show me around his city. He took me to the western parts of the city, where we passed by Badjao villages as well as a lot of factories.

He also took me to Abong-Abong Park, where there is a stations of the cross as well as a commanding view of Zamboanga and Basilan from the hilltop. I had meant to come here the day before but wasn’t able to due to transportation constraints, so it was a big relief to finally get to visit.

All in all, I did get to enjoy my short visit to Zamboanga. It may not be the conventional city for tourists but it is easily my favorite city in Mindanao. The abundant sunshine, cheap seafood as well as the relaxing pace of life are contributing factors to this. Also, it certainly helps that the city is outside the typhoon belt. And the local dialect — Chavacano which I haven’t encountered anywhere else in the country. In a way, it deceives me in terms of where I actually am. It’s a slice of the exotic in my own country.

Where to stay in Zamboanga

The pink sand beach of Sta Cruz island should not be missed when visiting Zamboanga but the hassle is that you need a military escort once you go on a trip to the island.

Sadly, Chavacano is not thriving anymore in the country but I’m glad it is widely spoken in Zamboanga. Chavacano is also a once widely spoken dialect in Cavite City, my hometown but now only few speaks it and mostly are old ones.

going to the Great Sta Cruz Island is no longer a hassle. You just go to the terminal at Paseo del Mar where the boats can be found. If you are lucky, you may be able to share the ride with the other passengers.

However I never heard about this city but it is totally awesome. Great historical buildings, culture, food and beautiful landscapes are enough to attract one to go for holidays to Zamboanga.
