Information

Amazing offers and introductions to new investors nationwide.

I am Hanan,

“ health is a journey I am

deeply passionate about

and I want to share it with you.”

My name is Hanan. I was brought up in France in a region that has lots of character and authenticity called Bretagne .

We all have a special purpose in this world and it’s my duty to support you and hold you accountable on your own health journey: this is one of my biggest convictions that inspires me each and every day.

My own health journey began with my mother, my first mentor and my biggest inspiration. In 1997, she was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer. She refused that this would be her fate and together we embarked on a health journey. Guided by her intuition, she traveled widely on a mission to educate herself on how her body works and what was best for it to function optimally.

Learning about ourselves is actually the most enjoyable thing in the world. Witnessing profound transformation in different areas of our life is deeply nourishing for our soul. That’s growth. I love the quote from Audre Lorde, who says:

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.”

I agree, don’t you?! In order to take care of others you need to take care of yourself; that’s what the world needs, people who enlighten others.

Until now I’ve shared with you the initiator and driver of this passion. I never thought about making it my professional scope of practice because I was using it to help me understand myself first, to overcome my health struggles like severe migraines, fatigue and digestion issues, and to teach myself the body to mind connection, how inextricable they are, because everything is interconnected, and that’s the science behind the holistic approach. I’m still striving to become the best version of myself in order to add value to the world. It’s when you feel happy, healthy, and strong enough mentally, emotionally and physically that you achieve and enjoy more.

Let me walk you now through the turning point when I realized that I have to turn this passion into a mission and that this is my purpose: to make an impact on individuals, on mothers, on big institutions, corporations, on the food industry. One of my core values is that any success in the world comes from service. Think about it thoroughly! In this modern world there are issues that we need to solve together in order to create a healthy, proactive society, and the world needs mentors and coaches in order to create the ripple effect.

Jay Shetty, author of “Think Like a Monk”, made an eloquent statement about success. He said: “The scale at which you succeed is in the depth of the problem you solve”. The depth and the wisdom of this quote inspires me.

The turning point that inspired me to become an official integrative nutrition (IN) health coach came after I became a mother to three handsome boys (triplets!), and they were about to begin nursery. I had protected them from unhealthy eating choices, but the idea of them being presented with other choices or them feeling ostracized because of their lifestyle disturbed me. There was something profound driving me to act. I decided to volunteer to do a series of workshops for parents dedicated to the health of young children and it was an amazing success! It was a great experience for me where I enjoyed communicating, talking through our struggles as mothers and women, sharing knowledge and putting it into practice. I realized that the movement I’m leading and the impact that I want to make is going to happen through a groundswell of education and information from leaders in this field like doctors and coaches. I continued to spread the word in schools. From here, I started a non-profit project of permaculture agriculture with farmers, raising awareness among them of the importance of not spraying crops to prevent soil depletion and to safeguard health. The goal of this project is to become a role model for private sector businesses and to create a ripple effect. I want business owners to fathom that they can make a profit, generate jobs and contribute to making the world a better place.

From here, I began to feel that this path fulfilled me and that I needed to take it to the next level and become an official health coach. I strongly believe that success comes from service, from the universe working through you and doing something that contributes to the world. The author Kyle Cease said it beautifully, and I agree with this philosophy: “Everything you do has to be a win, win, win rule”. For me, being a health coach is a win in terms of the fulfilment I receive from doing it, a win in terms of my clients being fulfilled and more conscious, and the third win is the world is better because of it.

Health Coaching

The definition of a health coach for me is an expert at calling to action, at creating a behavior that generates an immediate or progressive response, depending on the client’s personality type, to take action. A health coach honors your past but helps you harness the present in order to build a better future with healthy habits.

So, what is an integrative nutrition (IN) health coach and what is my scope of practice?

I’m a graduate from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), the world’s largest nutrition school. As more and more people recognize the importance of health and wellness, IIN continues to be at the forefront of the industry. It’s not just the knowledge and exposure to many dietary theories that set the Institute for Integrative Nutrition health coaches apart, it’s the unique value of its core concepts: bio-individuality, primary food and secondary food.

Let me start with primary food, which refers to what nourishes us beyond the plate. We know that we all need food to survive, but primary food emphasizes that we’re multidimensional beings and need more than just food to thrive. Primary food is powerful because it helps bring awareness to the full picture of health. It reminds us to take a step back when we are feeling imbalanced and look at our health from a big-picture perspective. At IIN I was captured by the Circle of Life, which explores 12 areas of primary food that encompass: joy, spirituality, creativity, finances, career, education, health, physical activity, home cooking, home environment, relationships and social life.

Secondary food is the food on our plate that we eat every day. It refers to the nourishment we derive from the food we eat and explores the intersection of nutrition and health. Our secondary food choices are driven by many components, some of which may not seem connected to diet at all. This is why if we’re only looking at diet, we’re only seeing a piece of the puzzle.

There are many factors that lead us to choose certain foods, including:

  • Environment
  • Physiology and psychology
  • Society, culture, and economy
  • Personal belief systems, food relationships, and knowledge about food.

Nourishment happens on different levels, so when we’re thinking about secondary food, it’s important to go back to our primary food.

Bio-individuality is the idea that everyone has different needs. Just as we are all unique in mind, body, and spirit, we are also unique in the things that support our individual health and happiness. When it comes to diet, lifestyle, and what makes you happy, what works for you won’t necessarily work for your family members, friends, or co-workers. Health is complex and multidimensional. There are so many variables that it’s impossible for all our needs to be the same. It’s not as simple as maintaining a healthy diet or exercise regimen; it’s understanding that there’s a lot more to it than just making the “right choices”. It’s experimenting to find what the right decisions are for you, the right environment, diet or workout that helps you thrive right now at this point in your life and to be mindful that it can change over the course of your life. Through my own experience, my insatiable curiosity and my lifelong learner mindset, I will coach you to explore your bio-individuality and guide you in developing self-trust to live a more fulfilling, balanced life. I will urge you to think critically, experiment and trust what works for you. I like this quote from General Patton that says: “If everyone is thinking alike, then someone isn’t thinking”. I am a huge proponent of teaching people to get to the root cause of any problem rather than focusing on the symptoms.

Just as life ebbs and flows so does your primary food. That’s why I emphasize progress over perfection. I will mentor you to embrace your health journey, strengthen your trust by equipping you with the tools to correct things when you’re feeling imbalanced and remind you to view health holistically. Health is a journey, not a destination, it’s important to enjoy the ride.

Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.

I will teach you to be compassionate with yourself and to develop your sense of self-awareness so you can begin tuning into what feels nourishing and what doesn’t. With endless articles and scientific papers on what to eat, it can be easy to be swept up into trends and confusion over what a healthy diet truly looks like. If this happens, just remember to go back to basics, whole foods, and then reach out for guidance from an expert. Because again, diet is bio-individual and now you are familiar with bio-individuality there isn’t going to be one eating style that is going to work for everyone! Think of all the different factors there are that affect our food choices. It would be just about impossible for all those things to totally align for different people. Thus, as bio individuals, we have different dietary needs, health levels, age, values, backgrounds, preferences, schedules, activity levels and even who you spend time with. Those are different pathways and variables that need to be seriously looked at. However, there are indisputable principles, such as a consensus in the health realm on cutting out all sorts of ultra processed food.

I had the chance to meet highly successful, smart people who inspired me but even the smartest people don’t connect what they eat with how they feel. We’ve been conditioned into thinking it’s got to be hard, it’s got to be difficult, and that’s absolutely not true. It has to be simple and sustainable for you, only you. The myth of willpower is not something that actually works most of the time and Professor B.J. Fogg of Stanford University demonstrates the methodology of small changes that change everything in a very accessible way in his book “Tiny Habits”, which I highly recommend.

Implementing health changes has to be enjoyable: health can be something that helps you get more out of your life and unleash your potential. Beyond the act of being and feeling healthy, this will help you change who you are as a human being to become someone who prioritizes their own health. What you value is what you prioritize the most and what you spend your money on. When you feel better, you live more, you can give more, and you engage more with the things that matter to you. It’s such a simple idea, but it’s so powerful and empowering. We are in the era of creating healthy behaviors: it’s a must for us and for the preservation of future generations.

A health coach’s scope of practice

A health coach is a mentor, a guide that helps you figure out the root cause of any problem related to your physical or emotional health. The role of a health coach is to hold you accountable to implement and take actions that are tailored to your unique lifestyle and sustainable in the long term. A health coach is a knowledge provider but doesn’t know everything. However, when something is out of a health coach’s scope of practice, they can collaborate with or refer you to doctors, specialists or wellness experts. Health coaches are not doctors: they don’t make diagnoses and they don’t prescribe medication. However, health coaches could collaborate with doctors and this collaboration between them results in a solid understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle despite any condition.

Hana Health Clinic will start using mobile medical services

Hana Health Clinic now has a mobile medical service that will be launching in March.

What You Need To Know

Hana health hopes to help at least 10 patients a day with the new mobile facility the mobile medical service will include a reception area, an exam room, bathroom and a wheelchair lift hana health clinic is also constructing a new building: the hana health rehabilitation and support center.

Hana Health Clinic, which serves rural East Maui, recently acquired a mobile clinic that will help people with little access to health care.

Executive Director Cheryl Vasconcellos told Spectrum News Hawaii in an interview Friday that Hana Health hopes to help at least 10 patients a day with the new mobile facility.

“The plan is to be able to provide health care services throughout the Hana district and in some of the more remote areas where the clinic is not necessarily as convenient in Ke‘anae or Kīpahulu,” said Vasconcellos.

The mobile medical service will include a reception area, an exam room, bathroom and a wheelchair lift.

The clinic will still need to be registered and get a safety check, according to Vasconcellos. Because of its large size, it also needs to be determined where the mobile clinic will be parked in different communities, and then a schedule will be created.

Vasconcellos said they hope to station the mobile clinic on school campuses. This will allow them to give kids access to expanded services, including screenings and the flu vaccination.

Hana Health Clinic is also currently constructing a new building, Hana Health Rehabilitation and Support Center, which will provide spaces for new services including physical therapy, chiropractic care, expanded room for behavioral health services and traditional healing services.

Vasconcellos said the traditional healing services will include lomi massage therapy.

At its free-standing building, Hana Health Clinic provides a full range of services, including primary care services, behavioral health care, dental care, and 24/7 urgent care.

“We’ve been extremely busy addressing the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Vasconcellos. She said Hana Health conducts screenings, contact tracing, testing, and vaccinations.

Hana Health Clinic is open Monday through Saturday. During the weekdays, the clinic is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Insights in Public Health

There are substantial and persistent health disparities among Native Hawaiians that are best addressed through multilevel socio-ecological approaches, which are tailored to the needs of the community. Partnerships that link academic investigators with grass roots community members have the potential to profoundly reduce health disparities and improve health and wellness by increasing the capacity of community-based organizations to provide leadership in health advocacy, support community health promotion, and participate in health research. We describe a 14-year partnership to reduce Native Hawaiian health disparities between investigators from The Queen's Medical Center and University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine (QMC-JABSOM) and community members in Hana, a geographically isolated, underserved, rural community with the second largest concentration of Native Hawaiians in the state. Our relationship started as an investigator-initiated, National Institutes of Health-sponsored study to explore familial cardiomyopathy, and transitioned to a community-based project that combined community cardiovascular health screening fairs with a qualitative research study to understand attitudes towards genetic research. Most recently, QMC-JABSOM has partnered closely with Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike, an award-winning construction skills training program for at-risk youth in Hana, to develop innovative, culturally based interventions to improve health and well-being among Native Hawaiians using principles of community-based participatory research.

Introduction

There are substantial and persistent health disparities among Native Hawaiians that are deeply imbedded in the social, political, and economic power inequities common to many indigenous peoples and their communities. 1 Difficulties in reducing Native Hawaiian health disparities highlight the need for a multilevel socio-ecological approach that moves beyond reductionist, disease-based interventions to one that embraces ancestral ways of knowing and a broader sense of “self” and “community.” 2 – 5

Hana is a small, rural, predominantly Native Hawaiian community on the island of Maui that is one of the most remote communities in Hawai‘i. Economically distressed, with over 30% of families living below the federal poverty level and nearly 80% of students eligible for school lunch assistance, 6 Hana also has significant health disparities, including high rates of substance abuse, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Despite these inequities, Hana is resilient and navigating towards a place of health and wellbeing. In this article, we describe a 14-year collaborative journey between a team from The Queen's Medical Center and University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine (QMC-JABSOM) and community partners in Hana.

Phase 1: From Hospital to Community-based Research (2005–2011)

Introduction to hana: patterns of heritable cardiomyopathy (2005–2009).

In 2005, The Queen's Medical Center received a National Institutes of Health (NIH)—National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) funded grant to develop family trees of Native Hawaiians with heart failure to better understand patterns of heritable cardiomyopathy and lay the groundwork for future genetic analyses. We identified 45 probands from the hospital inpatient and outpatient services and created family trees that generally demonstrated sporadic or autosomal dominant patterns of inheritance.

In the course of our work, one family in Hana challenged us to do more. Mrs. Patsy Kaina had already recognized that heart failure and premature death extended across at least four generations of her family, and she shared their history and genealogy, first at an office visit, then at a family member's home on O‘ahu, and then during invited visits to her home in Hana. From the start, Mrs. Kaina recognized the benefits of a partnership, and moved us beyond the narrow focus of our study. As we constructed a family tree of more than 300 family members, we spoke with community members about the complexity and reality of delivering heart disease care and conducting research in Hana. These conversations addressed the need for cultural context and community ownership, how past harms influence current attitudes, and the need for mutual trust and respect.

Moving Forward: Heart Screening Program and Qualitative Research Study (2010–2011)

Recognizing the sensitivity about performing genetic research with Native Hawaiian communities, 7 – 9 we conducted semi-structured interviews with families affected by heart failure during a community heart screening program that included blood pressure checks, EKGs, cardiac ultrasound, and individualized health education. More than 80 community members participated in these biannual screening events, which were coordinated by Mrs. Kaina and supported by a grant from the University of Hawai‘i Center for Native and Pacific Health Disparities Research. We found that the community was open to participating in genetic research if there was adequate trust, mutual benefit, and a key community voice. 10

Phase 2: From Community-based to Community-based Participatory Research (CBPR) (2012–2013)

Hana ulu pono project (2012–2013).

Encouraged by our community partners to move beyond health screening to test interventions that improve well-being, we followed CBPR principles to develop a culturally relevant, community-based program that built on the cultural wisdom and practices within Hana. With funding from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) and matching funds from QMC, and with Dr. Seto and Mrs. Kaina as co-principal investigators, the Hana Ulu Pono Project recruited community members to participate in community-developed activities consistent with indigenous practices, including net fishing, lauhala (leaves of the hala tree) gathering and weaving for kupuna (elders), walking groups, gardening, and kalo (taro) farming. With community-members recruiting participants, running the activities, and tracking attendance, the QMC-JABSOM team developed individualized exercise prescriptions, led health education and screening events, and performed endpoint assessments, including measures of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

Hana Ulu Pono Project 2 (2013)

With the continued support of OHA and QMC, community partnerships were expanded to include Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawai‘i State Department of Health, and local businesses to provide expanded programs for keiki (children), public health nurse visits for the home-bound, and water-based activities for kupuna . The unfortunate passing of Mrs. Kaina, our partner and key community voice, was a great loss for the community and a setback for our program.

Phase 3: Extending the Concept of Health with Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike (2014–18)

Ma ka hana ka ‘ike hana ola project (2014–18).

In January 2014, a new partnership was developed between QMC-JABSOM and Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike ( MKHKI ) (“In working one learns”), an award-winning construction skills training program for at-risk youth based at Hana School. An important and trusted fixture in the Hana community for more than 14 years under the leadership of Mr. Rick Rutiz and his team, MKHKI's perspectives on building community resilience through education, mentoring, protecting natural resources, caring for the vulnerable, and honoring cultural practices made it a natural partner for efforts to improve the community's health.

The new partnership, called the MKHKI Hana Ola Project, was developed following the principles of CBPR. The project recruited Hana community members into two core activities that integrated physical activity, health education, and ancestral and cultural practices. The Youth Community Program engaged youth and young adults in a building skills program that included a focus on mentorship and community service. Completed projects included cottages for kupuna and home improvements that increased safety and access for people with disabilities ( Figure 1 ). Additional activities for participants included hula and fishing. The Mahele Farm Program, based at a 10-acre farm that serves Hana as an educational, sustainable, and health food resource, offered participants nutrition education, hand-on experience with cooking and sustainable farming techniques, helping with the harvest, and sharing with the community ( Figure 2 ). The addition of a satellite garden at Hana School allowed school-aged participants to more regularly participate in activities.

In 2015, a third program, Malama Haloa, arose from MKHKI's expanded infrastructure and the community's overwhelming interest in the weekly ku‘i ‘ai (poi pounding). Under the direction on Mr. Viliami Tukuafu, the program included multiple components: (1) restoring and gaining stewardship of lo‘i kalo (wetland taro fields) in Wailua Nui; (2) malama ‘aina (caring for the land before planting); (3) learning Hawaiian chants, mo‘olelo (stories, myth, legends, history), values, and protocols associated with food and eating; (4) carving papa and pohaku (poi pounding boards and stones); (5) pounding kalo to make pa‘i ‘ai and poi ( Figure 3 ); (6) workshops and weekly kalo subscription service for families; 7) classes and field trips for students; 8) mala kalo (dry-land kalo gardens) at Hana School and Mahele Farm ( Figure 4 ).

As part of Malama Haloa, we were awarded a pilot grant from the Mountain West CTR-IN to conduct a randomized controlled trial, Ke Ala Haloa: Reclaiming Cardiometabolic Health in Hana , which measured the impact of a Traditional Hawaiian Eating Pattern (THEP) on cardiometabolic risk factors and quality of life. The intervention and study protocol was developed by Mr. Tukuafu, who also oversaw recruitment and study implementation. The QMC-JABSOM team helped to design the study, select study endpoints, and perform endpoint assessments. During the 1-year study, we randomized 50 participants to THEP or their usual diet, and found that those on THEP had significantly lower rates of obesity and overweight, less sedentary time and more physical activity, with a trend towards less hypertension. 11

Phase 4: Ho‘oma‘ama‘a a pa‘a i ka mana‘o (“Practice Until it is Firm in One's Thoughts”) (2019)

A new project currently under design builds on the infrastructure developed in Malama Haloa. Na ‘Umeke Piha Pono (“A Perfectly Full Bowl of Poi”) will provide families with weekly access to kalo, mea ku‘i, and mana to help participants fill their ‘umeke (a poi calabash) every week. In addition, all Hana High and Elementary School students will have the opportunity to participate in an annual 10-part Haloa-based educational program, which will promote mentorship opportunities in ku‘i ‘ai, mahi ‘ai kalo (farming kalo), ‘olelo Hawai‘i (the Hawaiian language), and community engagement. The Kumu Ku‘i (teacher) will allow students to have project-based activities that help them to learn in traditional ways alongside more modern methods. It is our hope that the Na ‘Umeke Piha Pono project will nurture and encourage a new generation of mahi ‘ai kalo practitioners through MKHKI-grounded partnerships that will provide intergenerational mentorship and apprenticeship opportunities.

Efforts to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities often require a multilevel socio-ecological approach, particularly among indigenous and geographically isolated communities. 1 – 6 , 12 The ongoing 14-year relationship between QMC-JABSOM and the community of Hana is a story of friendship, mutual trust, shared benefit, and continued learning. What started as an academic project to understand heart failure inheritance has evolved into a multilevel, community-embraced program to improve health and wellness that builds on the community's strength and resources, and embraces local traditions and ancestral ways of knowing.

Our experience is consistent with recommendations that the multi-level “upstream” changes needed to reduce health disparities require an increase in the capacity of community-based organizations to provide leadership in health advocacy, support community health promotion, and participate in community health research. 1 , 4 , 5 In many ways, MKHKI was the ideal partner: The organization was trusted in the community, had developed an extensive network of partners, maintained strong administrative leadership and key community voices, cultivated a strong link to cultural practices, and fostered a spirit of innovation and creativity.

We encountered several challenges. First, while we have been fortunate to obtain support from the NIH, OHA, and QMC, it is increasingly difficult to secure extramural funding, particularly for CBPR studies that may take several years to develop. 12 Second, we occasionally struggled to balance outcome measures that are meaningful to the community (eg, quality of life, engagement) and those that may be meaningful to grant funders and the scientific community (eg, HbA1c levels, inflammatory markers). Third, while we were able to successfully run a community-based randomized, controlled clinical trial, the burden on the community was tremendous as the constraints of randomization are essentially disconnected from the social fabric cohesiveness that is a core strength of this community. This means that implementing clinical research studies in the community setting will necessitate innovative, pragmatic designs.

In conclusion, through our partnership, we have developed the capacity to provide community-designed, culturally informed, and community-implemented interventions to reduce Native Hawaiian health disparities and improve health and well-being in Hana.

Book of Leviticus may hold the answer to Medicaid expansion and health care in Kansas

Ira Stamm

Over the past two weeks, I have attended rallies for Medicaid expansion and Mental Health Advocacy Day at the Kansas State Capitol. Gov. Laura Kelly addressed both rallies. I am writing to encourage you to expand Medicaid in Kansas.

A long journey

When my wife and I came to Topeka in 1972 from the East Coast for me to pursue two years of post-doctoral training in clinical psychology at the Menninger Clinic, a large billboard posted at I-70 and MacVicar greeted travelers: “Welcome to Topeka, Psychiatric Capital of the World.”

How the passage of time and the transformation of health care has changed all that.

Living in a city my mother volunteered to go door to door on behalf of the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Association and other charities to ask for modest contributions to those charities. There I was as a child at my mother’s side witnessing her quest and learning about charity.

Growing up in a religious household and attending Sunday school and prayer services, I learned the two most important lessons of many religions: 1) the most important “good deed” one can do is take care of and look after those less fortunate than ourselves and 2) “I am my brother’s keeper.”

Medicaid expansion

150,000 Kansans go to bed each evening and wake up in the morning with an awareness that if they develop a moderate or life-threatening illness they may not have access to life-affirming or life-saving health care. This is not right by any standard or measure.

Related matters

During the last four years of my work at the Menninger Clinic (1972-1995) I had a unique opportunity and experience. I had spent my first 19 years at Menninger treating patients in the Adult and Children’s Hospitals at Menninger. From 1991-1995 I visited with the CEOs, medical directors, network development directors, etc., of about 100 insurance companies across America and about 200 hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices.

I witnessed first hand the transformation taking place in health care in America at that time.

Later, as Kansas made its own good faith effort to enact universal health insurance I shared some of my experiences and knowledge before several committees of the Kansas Legislature.

The moral imperative for Medicaid expansion

During that era, Len Nichols, Ph.D., a health care economist for the New America Foundation, reminded the Kansas Legislature about the concept of “gleaning” from the Book of Leviticus in the Old Testament. Gleaning is the idea that when the farmer harvests the wheat from the field, he or she sets aside 10% of the harvest for the widow and orphan.

Nichols suggested to the Legislature that a modern day interpretation of gleaning would apply to health care and health care reform. It may be our moral obligation to set aside 10% of our national wealth to provide health care for all our citizens.

What is Lupus? Selena Gomez opens up about her health battles and self-love journey

Selena Gomez blowing a kiss. Side profile. Short brown hair, earrings, black suit jacket

American actor and singer Selena Gomez says she was initially "terrified" at the prospect of opening up about her mental health struggles.

"I went back and forth on whether I'd do it or not," Gomez said.

"And I think the moment I did that (open up) I felt this insane amount of release because there wasn't any hiding anymore.

"There wasn't just this image that people can see … I would say it's helped release a lot of anxiety."

Speaking on stage at the SXSW (South by Southwest) festival in the US city of Austin, Texas, Gomez came to realise opening up was the right move for her because of the way in which it had helped others.

Gomez was on a panel exploring mindfulness over perfection and getting real about mental health in which panel members spoke about navigating negative self-talk and making the journey towards authenticity.

A black and white photo of Selena looking at the camera with her reflection mirrored on the side.

Referencing her 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me in which she discusses her mental health and struggles with fame, Gomez said it made her "sick" to reflect on her negative self-talk back then.

"It bums me out," she said.

"But I think everybody can relate to that feeling.

"It's important to speak to yourself with kindness, but I don't think I really understood that.

"It's funny because all of the things I was bitching about then I'm grateful for now."

She said self-acceptance was not something that could be forced and she had to find her own way when she was ready.

"I had to hit my rock bottom. I had to do it in my time. It took a couple of tries, but I'd like to think and hope that I'm in a much better place now," she said.

Actress and singer Selena Gomez in a red cut out dress

Gomez suffers from bipolar disorder and the autoimmune disease lupus.

In 2015, she took a break from her career to deal with anxiety and depression stemming from her lupus diagnosis.

Gomez also underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 – also a result of lupus.

Martin, Selena and Steve look at something beyond the camera with a shocked expression as they stand on a stage.

What is lupus?

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that is unpredictable and commonly misunderstood. It is a complicated illness that affects different people in different ways. For some, it can be mild — for others, it can be life threatening.

A lupus patient's immune system attacks their body's normal cells, causing pain and inflammation in any part of the body, but mostly skin and joints.

Lupus overwhelmingly affects women. Nine in 10 patients are female. The majority develop the condition between the ages of 15 and 45.

There are different types of lupus

There are several different types of lupus, the most common being:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) — this can affect almost any organ or body system. It mostly affects your skin and joints, but sometimes it can affect your heart, lungs, kidneys or brain
  • Discoid lupus — this is a milder illness, with most people having only skin symptoms
  • In the United States, about 1.5 million people live with lupus
  • Lupus is estimated to affect 25,000 (1 in 1,000) people in Australia
  • 5 million people around the world are affected by lupus

What's the cause?

The cause is unknown. Scientists believe there are several things that can trigger the formation of antibodies, including genetic, hormonal and environmental factors.

Symptoms can also be triggered by stress, exposure to sunlight, infections and some medicines.

Lupus can be hard to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments.

Is there a cure?

There is no cure. But symptoms can be managed with medicine and a healthy lifestyle.

Common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain, stiffness and swelling
  • A butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose, or rashes elsewhere on the body
  • Skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure
  • Fingers and toes that turn white or blue when exposed to cold or during stressful periods
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headaches, confusion and memory loss

How lupus can affect the kidneys

Sixty per cent of people diagnosed with lupus will eventually develop lupus kidney disease, known as lupus nephritis.

Lupus nephritis is a serious and life-threatening complication that can affect as many as 60 per cent of all people with lupus and two-thirds of children with the disease.

Thirty per cent of patients fail to respond to lupus nephritis treatment.

Other complications

Inflammation caused by lupus can also affect the brain and central nervous system, blood and blood vessels, lungs and the heart.

Lupus also puts you at greater risk of developing infections, cancer, bone-tissue collapse and pregnancy complications.

A Comprehensive Guide to SAP S/4HANA Journey

A Comprehensive Guide to SAP S/4HANA Journey

Speed, agility, and innovation towards everyday operation are core aspects of the functioning of every successful organization. But, it’s easier said than done! Being an industry head can get challenging. With the growing competitiveness in the digital era, you need to be at the top of your operational efficiency.

However, it’s not that challenging if you’ve been a part of the SAP framework for your existing operations. The latest change in SAP’s strategy can be seen with SAP S/4HANA. It gives enterprises a new “digital core” and is solely intended to function on the SAP HANA in-memory platform.

But making the switch might be intimidating! Even after its successful run, organizations continue to present their doubts over onboarding this new age of ERP. So continue reading as this professional blog assists decision-makers in charting a route for SAP S/4HANA, the company’s latest business suite.

SAP S/4HANA: A New-Age Revolution

A significant change in SAP’s strategy can be seen with SAP S/4HANA. It gives enterprises a new “digital core” and is solely intended to function on the SAP HANA in-memory platform. With its lean architecture, a revamped user experience (based on SAP Fiori UX), and a reduced data model, S/4HANA was engineered with the idea of making ERP quicker, contemporary, and simpler to use.

S/4HANA can analyze data more quickly than prior SAP ERP systems because of the SAP HANA in-memory database architecture and the inclusion of cutting-edge technology. In addition, the platform’s on-premises version can also be set up in a private, public, or hybrid cloud.

Thanks to this new-age solution, companies today can drastically streamline, integrate, and speed up their core operations. In addition, there are several chances to acquire a competitive edge thanks to the increased capabilities of new technologies.

But implementing SAP S/4HANA isn’t only about connecting with an SAP Partner to initiate the migration process. Understanding SAP’s strategy and product roadmap are crucial before starting the migration path.

Continue reading as we map your journey through the SAP S/4HANA migration process.

Challenges to the S/4HANA Migration

Many SAP Architects are getting ready for a transition because SAP will soon stop providing support for its current ERP systems. However, the migration to a new ERP system is not a conventional IT project; it involves a fundamental change. Thus, there are specific difficulties in implementation. LeanIX and PwC performed a survey in 2018 that revealed the main challenges for businesses.

The findings revealed that the most significant hurdles are currently complicated IT landscapes, complex master data, and the ABAP code, which are company specific and incompatible with S/4HANA. Additional worries lead to uneven business procedures that must be unified before relocation.

Additionally, change management lacks the knowledge required to create the ideal plan. Individual parties participating in the coordinating process occasionally slow down the migration process.

SAP S/4HANA: The Different Migration Approaches

The alternatives available to businesses moving their ERP to S/4HANA depend on the extent of the conversion process. For example, the migration process can result from your implementation or your SAP partners’ advice and the cloud infrastructure hosting the ERP.

To sum up the entire migration process, here are the three typical methods that are being followed:

  • Greenfield Migration: Greenfield migration presents starting operations from scratch. This process utilizes a brand-new data center or cloud infrastructure and an entirely new ERP system. Although, generally, an organization’s first ERP, this process is also open for existing businesses when they need to transfer from an outdated SAP system or another vendor’s ERP. However, one significant drawback of opting for the Greenfield migration process exists! Organizations opting for this implementation must allocate their time and resources to move the existing business processes to S/4HANA’s methodology. The two other significant obstacles are transferring data from the outdated ERP and educating staff members on the new platform. On the brighter side, the only migration process that allows you to leverage all of S/4HANA’s alleged benefits , including predictive analytics, real-time reporting, AI modeling, and process automation.
  • Brownfield Migrating Via S/4HANA Finance: Next up is a migration process that doesn’t require you to undergo operations from scratch. A prevalent option among many businesses, many SAP partners, prefer starting the migration by implementing a financial module, the SAP S/4HANA Finance, and its connection platform, Central Finance. This implementation method is a typical strategy, simplifying the migration and delaying the transition to other modules. Since accounting is a traditional back-end procedure that doesn’t change much, such partial migration is practically possible. Once the front end for a given business module is changed, different aspects of your operations, for instance, logistics, don’t need to be mounted after changing the back end just once. The transition to S/4HANA Finance-Central Finance is an example of a so-called Brownfield strategy, an IT phrase for keeping specific old components in use. It can also be referred to as a hybrid setup to help initiate a smooth transaction.
  • Landscape Transformation: Last, we have the Rise with SAP module of the SAP HANA platform. Marketed as “business transformation as a service,” the module is a collection of different goods and services provided by SAP to help clients get their S/4HANA Cloud up and running in real-time. The platform gives organizations access to a broader ecosystem, which (among other things) includes intelligent business process re-engineering and the SAP Ariba procurement network. Businesses can easily leverage processes like SAP public cloud, Google Cloud Platform, or a hyper-scaler like Amazon Web Services. While this implementation method establishes a more direct connection to the cloud, it isn’t a complete migration system. Instead, everything is carried out under a single contract to simplify the administration and coordination of numerous platforms and vendors.

While these were the leading implementation methods, that’s not all! Besides the Rise with SAP approach, consulting companies also have processes and tools for implementing SAP S/4HANA .

They may automate the ERP program code testing to evaluate what can and should be moved to S/4HANA . Additionally, they provide S/4HANA prebuilt setups tailored to particular sectors.

So that’s your overview of the different migration procedures for moving to the SAP infrastructure. Now, to give you a better insight into what you’re signing up for, we’ve discussed some of the prevalent versions of the S/4HANA in the following section.

Different Versions of the SAP S/4HANA

Over the years, S/4HANA has released several modules to complement the functioning of different parts of its ERP environment. While your SAP Partner will assist you with the other versions, it’s always a wise move to understand these versions yourself.

SAP S/4HANA Versions

Source: https://blogs.sap.com/

To give you a brief, we’ve discussed some of the versions below. As of 2022, these were some of the S/4HANA releases:

  • SAP S/4HANA 1610 – Module launched in October 2016

Following the footsteps of its previous 1511 version, this module of the S/4HANA combines different aspects of the financial data in one system. Besides, in addition to the revised industry solutions, the 1610 version brings you SAP’s version of the EWM (Extended Warehouse Management), simplifying the overall business approach.

  • SAP S/4HANA 1709 – Module released  in September 2017

The 1709 release of the S/4HANA witnessed better innovations, focusing on on-premise solutions. In addition, this module version brought us the Hana 2.0 in-memory database that ensures new recovery functions, better security, and improved management via the SAP Hana Cockpit.

  • SAP S/4HANA 1809 – Module launched in September 2018

Version 1809 of the S/4HANA comes with a streamlined approach to machine learning. The module introduces more such functions, focused on areas such as production, sales, and procurement. Besides, there were also new features like predictive accounting to simplify business finance.

  • SAP S/4HANA 1909 – Module released in September 2019

One of the latest releases of the S/4HANA module, the 1909 version, is focused on forecasting, intelligent automation, and best practices inside the industry. However, a primary highlight of this update is its Group Reporting which allows companies to tap into real-time group reporting.

  • 2020 – Module released in 2020

The 2020 version of the S/4HANA brings a 360-degree approach to business. The module focuses on innovation and deals with different aspects of finance, with focused improvements on Financial Accounting and Treasury Management. However, Revenue Accounting & Reporting stands out as the highlight of the module.

  • SAP S/4HANA 2021 – Module released in 2021

SAPs previously released module in 2021 was focused on Line-of-Business! The module shares updates on quality management and MRP around the Manufacturing area. Besides, the platform also brings new machine learning–based suggestions, enhancing operations in the asset management area.

  • SAP S/4HANA 2022 – Module released in 2022

SAPs latest release, the 2022 module, is focused on intelligent enterprises by focusing on the supply chain and its management. The module takes a comprehensive approach to Finance, Manufacturing, and Health & Safety via its innovative features.

Determining Your SAP S/4HANA Migration Approach

The decision to migrate, such as choosing S/4HANA Finance over another brownfield alternative, is often made during the design stage of deployment planning when the strategy and roadmap are established.

When selecting the appropriate migration approach, SAP and its consulting partners provide meticulous strategy and planning procedures. It is sometimes referred to as phase zero and corresponds to the initial phases of SAP’s Activate methodology. The essential phases are as follows, but nomenclature varies:

  • Evaluate the current system: This procedure, also known as discovery or readiness assessment, entails evaluating the present ERP system, its data, and the business processes it impacts, frequently using statistics to gauge each component’s effectiveness. Users discuss their problems, and fees for licensing and upkeep are also considered. In addition, IT examines master data and inventories of custom code.
  • Review the architecture: In this step, you map your current ERP modules and business processes to the S/4HANA modules and all the available deployment methods while choosing the ones to keep.
  • Analyze the future state: Here, based on specifications received from users, department heads, executives, and other stakeholders, you imagine what the new ERP should be able to perform. You also attempt to put a dollar figure on the advantages, such as the cost savings from combining ERP systems or starting a new e-commerce venture. Finally, the data is fed into the business case for the ERP, which is often the following stage.

Once done, you’ll have a better chance of making a reliable migration decision.

Perks of Migrating to the SAP S/4HANA Interface

There is a long list of possible advantages of implementing SAP S/4HANA into your everyday operations! Most of the perks are centered around the SAP HANA in-memory database that underpins the functioning of S/4HANA and speeds up searches and analysis on vast pools of internal and external data.

Besides, the ERP infrastructure also offers other additional benefits like:

  • Seamless access to the latest technology, including IoT, AI, & chatbots
  • Automatic updates every quarter
  • Real-time analytics on consolidated data
  • Simplified UI for effortless operations
  • Faster period-end financial closings
  • Automated operation processing
  • Easier-to-update business models

The Question Isn’t About If, It’s About When?

Companies signing up for SAP S/4HANA Cloud will better eliminate competition early on while leveraging new-age innovation. The process will take a lot of time and effort to upgrade current systems to adopt the new business suite’s innovations and keep up. But by doing this, companies will construct on pillars they know will ultimately erode. When they migrate, they must consider any custom code or extensions they create.

By initiating the S/4HANA migration early on, enterprises may avoid the long, expensive project that will interrupt operations that they worry would result from their uncertainty about the SAP S/4HANA deployment process. However, companies may accomplish a seamless, low-risk shift if they are well prepared, practice change management, and access valuable tools and resources.

We’ve been growing businesses since 2001, let us do it for you!

SAP HANA Learning Journey

SAP HANA is an in-memory database and development platform by SAP. It serves as the software giant’s contemporary, in-memory computing product for the business market. SAP HANA offers column-based storage, data aging and dynamic tiering, provisioning capabilities, high availability and disaster recovery, monitoring tools, data modeling, and a slew of security options. It is available for on-premise, cloud, and two-tiered (hybrid) deployments.

What Is In-Memory Computing?

In-memory computing refers to the ability to store large amounts of data in the main memory of a server—the RAM memory one may consider when buying a computing product. This results in fewer movements of data when recalled and faster transaction time. Just how fast can data be accessed when stored and used in RAM? 10,000 times faster than data stored on a hard disk.

Brooke Shields talks mental health at Sound Minds in Naples; actor named 2025 speaker

hana health journey

An actress, author and the "Face of the '80s" visited Naples recently to discuss mental health and raise money for David Lawrence Centers.

Brooke Shields spoke Thursday at Sound Minds, the signature event of David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health, Collier County's only comprehensive, not-for-profit behavioral health provider.

The event raised $1.5 million to provide access to care for county children, families, and adults, regardless of an individual’s ability to pay for services.

Brooke Shields 'spoke candidly about her mental health journey'

In a conversation with mental health advocate Jennifer Trammell, Shields "deftly navigated between heartfelt and humorous," David Lawrence Centers said in a news release.

"She spoke candidly about her mental health journey, first as an idolized child star, then through her mother’s battle with alcoholism, and culminating with her frightening experience with post-partum depression," the release said.

"Recognizing the critical need to address mental health issues and destigmatize conversations surrounding them, Shields has become a vocal proponent for open dialogue and understanding."

Shields, who began as a child model at 11 months old before co-starring in movies by age 9 in "Sweet Baby" in 1978. Other films included "Blue Lagoon" (1980) and "Endless Love" (1981). In the 1980s, Brookes modeled in print and TV ads for Calvin Klein Jeans and appearing on numerous magazine covers that made her one of the most recognizable people in the world for that decade.

Sound Minds event continues to grow, 2024 chairs say

John and Amy Quinn, who chaired Sound Minds, are local philanthropists and mental health advocates whose Fountain 33 Foundation was the presenting sponsor.

“This event not only shines a spotlight on mental health awareness, but it has also become a must-attend evening in our community,” said Amy Quinn in the release.

“We have seen this event grow into one we will look forward to each social season,” added John Quinn.

Actor Dennis Quaid to speak at 2025 Sound Minds in Naples

David Lawrence Centers on Thursday night also revealed that Emmy Award-winning actor and two-time Golden Globe Nominee Dennis Quaid will take the Sound Minds stage for its event next season.

Known for his roles in hit films “The Rookie,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Traffic,” “Vantage Point,” “Frequency” and "The Right Stuff," Quaid also co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in Disney’s animated adventure film “Strange World.”

On the film and television side, Quaid's recent big- screen credits include starring roles in Netflix’s uplifting film “Blue Miracle,” Sony’s thriller “The Intruder,” Universal’s “A Dog’s Journey,” and “A Dog’s Purpose,” and Roadside Attractions’ “I Can Only Imagine,” among others.

Quaid recently completed production portraying the 40th president of the United States in the biopic “Reagan,” produced by Mark Joseph and directed by Sean McNamara. Alongside his acting career, Quaid is also a singer-songwriter and recording and touring musician who’s been playing music since his grandfather bought him his first guitar.

Who benefits from the fundraiser

Money raised helps with the growing demand and cost for mental health and substance use services in Collier County. David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health is the county’s only comprehensive, behavioral health provider.

Sound Minds is the not-for-profit's signature event, Sound Minds that helps raise critical funding intended to provide access to care for children, families, and adults.

Past speakers at Sound Minds

Actress  Goldie Hawn  headlined the 2023 event. Past speakers also have included a  Columbine shooting survivor , national experts, actors and legislators who have been impacted personally by behavioral health challenges.

A Complete Timeline of Kate Middleton's Abdominal Surgery and Cancer Diagnosis

Kate Middleton underwent a 'planned abdominal surgery' in January, and in March revealed that she was being treated for cancer

hana health journey

Kate Middleton has broken her silence about her health crisis.

On March 22, Kate revealed in a personal video message that she has cancer and is undergoing treatment. The type of cancer was not revealed.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson says, "We will not be sharing any further private medical information. The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do."

The health news comes after Kensington Palace announced in January that the royal underwent a " planned abdominal surgery " at The London Clinic, which was understood to be non-cancerous at the time.

Though they didn’t provide any more details about her surgery at the time, they did confirm that she “will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery.” They added that they will continue to provide updates on Kate’s progress “when there is significant new information to share."

In the March announcement, a palace spokesperson says Kate started the course of preventative chemotherapy in late February. "It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment," the royal said in the video.

Regarding her return to public duties, the spokesperson says, "The Princess will return to official duties when she is cleared to do so by her medical team. She is in good spirits and is focused on making a full recovery."

As more information is shared about Kate’s recovery, here’s everything to know.

Christmas Day marked Kate’s last public appearance before her surgery , when she joined her husband Prince William and children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, for their annual family walk to church in Sandringham.

Kate had a full schedule in December, visiting Evelina London Children's Hospital, where she opened the Children’s Day Surgery Unit, and attending the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace. She also hosted her third annual Together At Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey, which highlighted her “Shaping Us” early childhood campaign in its first year.

“She was studious and really took her time to understand the topic and really think about how she can take early years and awareness of the early years to the next level across all of society,” a source told PEOPLE about the initiative.

“That will take her on through 2024 and continue to bang that drum,” the source added. “She is unequivocal about that continuing way, way into the future.”

The statement also asked for privacy as she tried to maintain normalcy, with her children in mind : "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private."

January 29, 2024: Kate Middleton is discharged from the hospital

13 days after her surgery, Kate was discharged from the hospital on Jan. 29, the palace said. “The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress," Kensington Palace said in a statement. “The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided.

“The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well wishes they have received from around the world," the statement continued.

February 27, 2024: A palace source tells PEOPLE Kate Middleton is 'doing well' in recovery

Almost a month after Kate was discharged from the hospital, a palace source gave PEOPLE an update on the Princess of Wales, noting that she "continues to be doing well." The update came shortly after her husband William made a last-minute decision  to pull out of an appearance.

On Feb. 27, William was forced to pull out of attending a memorial service honoring his godfather King Constantine of Greece due to a personal matter. However, Kensington Palace didn't indicate whether William's absence was due to Kate's recovery.

February 29, 2024: The palace addresses rumors and conspiracy theories about Kate Middleton's health

As Kate became the subject of online speculation , the palace shared a rare statement about her health. A spokesperson for Princess Kate said, "We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter and Kensington Palace would only be providing updates when something was significant." The spokesperson reiterated the princess is "doing well."

Late February 2024: Kate Middleton appoints a new private secretary

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty

At the end of February, Kate brought on Lt. Col. Tom White to lead her staff as private secretary. Although White is new to Princess Kate's team, he is no stranger to the royal family, most recently serving as the late  Queen Elizabeth ’s equerry. According to  The Telegraph ,  White joined the Buckingham Palace team in 2020 after serving with the Royal Marines.

The Princess of Wales previously had  Hannah Cockburn-Logie  as her private secretary from 2020 to 2022, before she reportedly departed for personal reasons.

In photos obtained by Backgrid, Kate was seen in a car with her mom,  Carole Middleton on March 4. It marked the first time the royal has been publicly spotted since  undergoing planned abdominal surgery  in January.

March 6, 2024: A palace insider tells PEOPLE Kate Middleton's condition is shrouded in 'radio silence'

In PEOPLE's cover story, various sources give insight into the lack of transparency in the royal family , with one palace insider telling PEOPLE that there has been "radio silence" regarding Kate's condition.

As royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith points out, "She's so central to the monarchy and the future." And with little information regarding both Kate and King Charles' health amid his cancer treatments, Bedell Smith adds, "Everybody feels unsettled by uncertainty, and there is too much uncertainty that is surrounding the monarchy right now."

March 22, 2024: Kate Middleton reveals she has cancer and is getting chemotherapy

Kate shared in a personal video message on March 22 that she has cancer and is undergoing treatment. In her emotional video, the royal started by thanking well-wishers for their "wonderful messages of support" amid her recovery during what has been "an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family."

"In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous," she said. "The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment."

Kate called the news a "huge shock" and said that she and  Prince William  "have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."

She added that "it's taken us time to explain everything" to her kids George, Charlotte and Louis "in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be okay."

CVS CEO Karen Lynch on decision to carry the abortion pill, cybersecurity threats

By Norah O'Donnell, Callie Teitelbaum, Alicia Hastey

Updated on: March 21, 2024 / 10:12 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Karen Lynch, CEO of pharmacy giant CVS Health, spoke this week about the decision to carry the pill for the first time in an interview with CBS News.

Earlier this month, CVS and Walgreens announced they will dispense the abortion pill mifepristone in states where it is legally allowed. The move comes as Americans face an increasingly complicated health care landscape.

"As a company, our north star is that we support women's health and that we are committed to making sure that women have access to reproductive health services, education, and FDA approved products," Lynch said. "So that's the decision we make because we know women need access to health."

Both CVS and Walgreens previously told CBS News they became certified to dispense the pills following regulatory changes from the Food and Drug Administration. CVS said the pill will cost $79, but may be covered by insurance for some patients.

Next week, the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in a case brought by anti-abortion rights medical associations and doctors seeking to suspend the FDA's approval of mifepristone , which has been in place since 2000.

How CVS responded to the UnitedHealth cyberattack

Last month, the UnitedHealth Group suffered one of the largest cyberattacks to ever hit an American health care system. The attack froze payments in medical facilities across the country and led to a delay in patients being able to get their prescriptions. The impact of the attack is still ongoing.

Lynch said that after learning of the breach, she brought the CVS cyberteam together to look for vulnerabilities in their system and make adjustments.

According to Lynch, CVS invests "[a] lot of money to make sure that we are protecting our data, our technology, and our systems," and they are "doing the best we can to prepare for any potential cyberattacks."

When asked by CBS News why everyday products — like shampoo and toothpaste — are locked up in CVS stores, Lynch said the reason is "organized retail theft."

"We're trying to keep things safe and our employees safe," Lynch said. "And sometimes you have to put things under lock. I don't like it. And I know our customers don't like it."

Lynch said she is keen on listening to customer feedback, telling CBS News she reads every letter written to her.

"It takes a lot of time," Lynch said. "But it gives me a pulse on what's going on in our company."

CVS seeks to branch out

Under Lynch's stewardship, CVS has made an effort to expand into primary care. It acquired Oak Street Health for $10.6 billion last May, and in 2022 entered into a deal to acquire Signify Health for $8 billion.

She says she has also worked to make mental health services more accessible — a priority that is personal. Lynch was orphaned at age 12 after her mother, who suffered from depression and schizophrenia, died by suicide.

CVS now offers mental health services in 14 states. As of 2019, there had been less than 200,000 virtual mental health visits through CVS, the company said. Since then, that number has jumped to 43 million.

"One of the areas that we're very focused on is making sure that there's access points so that people can get the care that they need," Lynch said. "But the first thing we have to do is eradicate the stigma of mental health."

CVS navigates pharmacist burnout

Last September, CVS pharmacists walked off the job at about a dozen stores in the Kansas City, Missouri, area, in protest of work conditions, such as staffing shortages.

"We didn't necessarily have walkouts, that was more of a headline," Lynch told CBS News, going on to say that the company increased wages "by a billion dollars over the last two years," and improved technology as well as "training and development" in an effort to increase its pharmacist staffing numbers.

Last month, CVS agreed to pay an approximately $1.5 million fine with the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy to settle 27 cases related to alleged violations at nearly two dozen CVS pharmacies — many of which the board said were connected to insufficient staffing levels.

"The allegations include improper drug security, dispensing errors, prescription delays, lack of general cleanliness, understaffing, and failure to report losses of controlled substances," the state board said.

On addressing concerns about working conditions, Lynch said, "We'll continue to evaluate what's going on and make sure that we have the pharmacist and pharmacy techs at the pharmacy counter for our patients."

Lynch believes affordability is a No. 1 issue facing the health care industry today.

"Health care's complicated in this country," Lynch went on. "We're on a path to improve the affordability, to improve quality and lower cost. We're not there yet…we've made meaningful progress. We need to make more progress."

CVS CEO's personal journey

When Lynch was tapped to become CEO in 2021, she says it wasn't her skill that was called into question, but her ability to look the part.

"They told me that I was too short, they told me that I was too blonde, they told me that I was petite and that my voice wasn't deep enough in this day and age," Lynch said.

Fortune 500 last year named her America's most powerful female CEO. Her new book, "Taking up Space," chronicles her rise within the health care industry.

"We shouldn't be ashamed of our past experiences because you know, you're going to have setbacks, you're going to have experiences," Lynch said. "They shouldn't be life sentences on your future."

"I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery," the Princess of Wales shared in a video message March 22, her first formal appearance  since undergoing abdominal surgery in January . "It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family."

"But I've had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful," Kate—who shares kids  Prince George , 10,  Princess Charlotte , 8, and  Prince Louis , 5, with husband  Prince William —said. "In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful."

However, the 42-year-old noted, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.

"My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment," she continued. "This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family."

"As you can imagine, this has taken time," Kate added. "It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok."

Kate—who did not disclose the specific type of cancer she was diagnosed with—went on to confirm that she is well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help her heal.

"Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too," she noted. "As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."

She concluded her message by asking for privacy during this time and sent a message of support to those affected by cancer.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
