Top 19 Best Things To Do In Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia [2023]

Below are our suggestions for what to do in Kuala Terengganu. Note that the state of Terengganu has weekends on a Friday and Saturday. Opening hours to many of the interesting places to visit in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia are limited or closed on Fridays. So if you only have one day in this city, try to make it a different day.

It’s also worth noting that when we visited, many attractions we planned to visit were actually closed down so be weary about reading older publications, like Lonely Planet. Everything below was definitely available when we updated this article. Be wary of anything published earlier.

Visit The Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque

Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque

When it comes to what to do in Terengganu, I recommend starting with a visit to the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque.  This stunning mosque, known as the Floating Mosque, is on an artificial island surrounded by water about 4.5 kilometres south east of the centre of Kuala Terengganu.

The mosque is pretty at any time of day, but it’s particularly beautiful at sunset when the traditional white, Moorish design looks spectacular against the setting sun.  Definitely, a top place to visit in Terengganu.

Explore Taman Tamadun Islam And The Crystal Mosque

Crystal Mosque Kuala Terengganu places of attraction in Terengganu

When you visit Kuala Terengganu, definitely take a look at Taman Tamadu Islam – the world’s first Islamic civilisation park. There are two parts to it.

Zone A is the first part. It is free. Here you can visit the Crystal Mosque pictured above. Made out of steel and glass, it is quite unique. It is named after the huge crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall.

Zone B has an entry fee and is home to a series of miniature models of famous Islamic buildings from around the world such as Mecca’s Haram Mosque and India’s Taj Mahal. They are built to a scale between 1:17 and 1:22. There are also river cruises.

The mosque is located about 2.5 kilometres from central Kuala Terengganu and there are bus and taxi options.  This is one attraction that should be on your list of Terengganu places to visit.

Explore Chinatown

Chinatown Kuala Terengganu

After the serenity of the mosques, the next best place to visit in Kuala Terengganu is bustling Chinatown. This compact area is centred on Jalan Kampung Cina and is home to heritage buildings, temples and alleys with street art.  It’s charming and makes for a lovely walk.

It’s a fun place for a quick stroll and, below, you will find some Kuala Terengganu things to do while you are there.

Find Some Street Art

Kuala Terengganu street art

More and more cities in Malaysia seem to be adding some fabulous street art to their alleys and streets and, thankfully, Kuala Terengganu has too!

The best place in Kuala Terengganu to see street art is in Chinatown.  While you’re there check out every alley you see and you’ll find many will have street art. When I tried to find examples I had looked up beforehand, they just weren’t where they were publicised. It’s much easier (and more fun) to just look out for it as you go.

Visit Ho Ann Kiong Temple

Ho Ann Kiong Temple Kuala Terengganu

Also located in Chinatown, the attractive Ho Ann Kiong Temple is another Terengganu place to visit as you wander around.

This red and gold temple dates back to 1796, although it was rebuilt in both 1801 and 2010 after a fire. It’s smaller than I expected. Make sure you check out the stone carvings inside and outside the temple.

Behind Ho Ann Kiong Temple

And when you are finished, walk around the back. There is a cool “wishing tree”.

Learn Chinese Peranakan History At Teck Soon Heritage House

Teck Soon Heritage House Kuala Terengganu

In a previous life, this Chinatown shophouse was owned by the Teck Soon Trading Company. Now, it is a much more interesting place in Terengganu as it is a history museum focused on Chinese Peranakan culture in this city. Painted beautifully in three shades of blue, even if you don’t want to enter, it’s worth checking out the outside.

Entry is free. However, it is unclear what the opening hours of the museum are now. Still, wander past when you are exploring Kuala Terengganu as it looks great.

Shop At The Central Market

Kuala Terengganu Central Market

Another one of the things to do Kuala Terengganu offers is the Central Market. This is the place to go for a lively atmosphere, to sample local food and buy fruit.

There’s also a wide range of batik and locally weaved fabric here. Many stalls are shut on Fridays.

Visit The Zainal Abidin Mosque

Zainal Abidin Mosque, Kuala Terengganu

For a mosque closer to the city centre, the Zainal Abidin Mosque is a Kuala Terengganu tourist attraction just a short walk from Chinatown. It’s pretty inside with 9 domes letting light in and pretty latticed windows.

Non-Muslims can enter if dressed appropriately.

Check Out Istana Maziah

Istana Maziah In Kuala Terengganu

Near the Central Market on the side of a hill is the Sultan’s Palace.

You can’t go inside to visit, but it’s still one of the Kuala Terengganu places to visit – you can check out the outside as you walk past on Jalan Masjid Abidin.

Visit Bukit Puteri

Another one of the places to go in Terengganu which is located by the Central Market and Istana Maziah is Bukit Puteri. Here, there are a few Kuala Terengganu activities including a 200 metre hill you can walk up to get great views of Kuala Terengganu, the Sungai Terengganu river mouth and out to the South China Sea.

There are also historical remains here from when the sultan used this area during the civil war as a fort. There are still cannons, a flagpole, large bell and remains of defence walls. You can also find a lighthouse at the top of the hill.

Entry costs RM1. It was closed at the time of publishing so we couldn’t check it out.

Walk Along The Waterfront Area

Kuala Terengganu riverfront area

For your Kuala Terengganu sightseeing list be sure to add the area by the river near Chinatown. There are pretty bridges and walkways and even a huge “I <3 KT” sign.

It’s a nice place to walk in the evening, and there are some food stalls to fill your belly as well.

Explore Pulau Duyung

Pulau Duyung Kuala Terengganu

Pulau Duyung is an island in the estuary close to the centre of Kuala Terengganu. It’s quite different from the other options of what to see in Kuala Terengganu as it feels like you go back in time if you walk around the older areas.

It is just a short taxi, bus or ferry (from behind Central Market but just once a day) from the centre and, unfortunately, modern housing estates are starting to take over the island. However, there are still old wooden houses and it can feel like you are in a smaller village.

You can walk around and soak up the island as well as visit old boat-building yards where boats are often built using old tools and techniques. Pulau Duyung is certainly another one of the interesting places in Kuala Terengganu to visit.

Learn History At The Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu (Terengganu State Museum)

Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu

This is a top tourist attraction in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia if you want to learn more about the history of the area and to see traditional houses. It’s actually the largest museum in Malaysia with 4 interconnected buildings built on stilts and based on ancient Terengganu palace designs!

The highlight is definitely the buildings themselves and other traditional buildings that are here.

Inside, you will find information on natural history including rocks, minerals, flora and fauna found in the state, local textiles, traditional handicrafts, the Terengganu royal family, petroleum, the arrival of Islam into the Terengganu area and the history of human development in Terengganu. There are also old cars, boats and planes to check out. It’s a lot!

The only shame is that it could be better maintained and put in some type of order so you can get as much as possible from a visit. Still, it’s definitely one of the Kuala Terengganu tourist attractions worth visiting, even just for the buildings alone.

This tourist attraction in Terengganu is located about 6 kilometres from the city, so you need to bus or take a Grab taxi. Foreigner entry is currently RM15 for adults or RM10 for kids. It’s a fair bit cheaper for Malaysians.

Eat Everything At Town City Food Court

Town City Food Court

The best place to visit in Terengganu when you start to get hungry is Town City Food Court.  Located on the edge of Chinatown, it’s the perfect place to kick back for lunch or dinner. There are some good Chinese food options. There is also a relatively good selection of cold beer and fans to keep things cool.

When I first entered, I was overwhelmed by some menus being only in Chinese, but people speak at least some English so don’t let that stop you!

Taste The Great Coffee At Star Anise

Star Anise Kuala Terengganu

One of the top 10 things to do in Kuala Terengganu is to pop into Kuala Terengganu’s best coffee joint!

Open from midday to midnight in Chinatown, this is the perfect place to grab a sweet coffee or to take a break between sightseeing for some pie or cheesecake.

Relax at Batu Buruk (Beach)

Batu Buruk Terengganu attractions places

Looking for some beach time with your Kuala Terengganu main attractions? Then head to Batu Buruk.

Located a short drive away, this is where you will find a long sandy beach with nice water although it’s a better place to picnic than swim. There are also cultural performances sometimes and swings right on the beach!

It is popular with locals, particularly on weekends, so weekdays can be a better time to visit with the absolute best time to visit being on Friday nights when there is a delicious night market.

While Batu Buruk is not the best place at Terengganu if you’re looking for a swim, it’s still well worth a visit to hang out with the locals.

Take A Cruise

Kuala Terengganu drawbridge

A great way to explore Kuala Terengganu is from the water, especially if you are short on time.

On this two hour cruise , you can see many of the things to do in Kuala Terengganu from a different angle and take some great photos.

This cruise visits the Crystal Mosque, Duyong Island, Sekati Island, the big drawbridge and more. It departs throughout the day so you can choose your perfect time slot.

Visit Redang Island

Laguna Redang Island Resort Kuala Terengganu beach

Redang Island is the place to go for gorgeous beaches and great snorkelling and diving. Visiting here is a great to intersperse the city attractions of Kuala Terengganu with some amazing natural attractions. It’s one of the prettiest places I have been in Malaysia.

While at least an overnight stay is best (read our guide to the best resorts here ), it is also possible to day trip to Redang Island. Find our full Redang travel guide here.

You can also read exactly how to get to Redang from Kuala Terengganu here.

Visit A Fisherman’s Village In Seberang Takir

Found just off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, Seberang Takir is a fisherman’s village which is the best places in Terengganu for visitors to get a glimpse of authentic local culture in the area.

Hire a local boat and driver to take you to the village, as you immerse yourself and observe the everyday lives of locals in the village. Visitors here are always welcome.

Just make sure that you’re respectful with the locals because Seberang Takir is a real working village.

Kuala Terengganu Itinerary

The downtown area is home to many of the attractions and activities in Terengganu which are mentioned above.  They are all just a short walk from each other.

Best Hotels In Kuala Terengganu

A plus about visiting Kuala Terengganu is that there is a range of accommodation and it is all good value.

I recommend staying somewhere central where you can walk to most tourist attractions in Terengganu mentioned above. Make sure you are close to Chinatown and that will tick this box.

MIDRANGE – Grand Puteri Hotel Review

Grand Puteri Kuala Terengganu outside

The Grand Puteri Hotel is my top choice because it is so centrally located, has great facilities and is incredibly good value.

You can easily walk to most Kuala Terengganu attractions listed above from here and then cool down in the pool when you are done. There is also a restaurant and a business centre.

There are a few different room types. We stayed in the cheapest, which is fine – although you do somewhat get what you pay for. There are suites if you want a treat! I was very happy with the price we paid.

BUDGET – Arena Boutique Hotel Review

tourism in terengganu

For a great priced option, consider the clean, tidy and comfortable Arena Boutique Hotel on the edge of Chinatown. It’s only a budget hotel in terms of price, not what is offered.

There is a great range of room types of solo travellers, couples and families with bedding for up to five. Rooms come with free wifi, tea and coffee making facilities, flatscreen TV and comfortable bedding. There is also an executive suite with its own living area.

On-site, you can also find a fitness centre and a restaurant.

Most things to do in Kuala Terengganu are close together so it’s easy to walk between many of the attractions here.

For others, there is a good bus system in Kuala Terengganu which should get you to most places of interest in Kuala Terengganu listed above. However, if you have limited time, it’s much easier to use taxis and they are affordable as well.

Use the Grab app (easy to install and get started if you don’t already have it) to get taxis. This works like Uber (in fact, Grab bought Uber in Malaysia) and makes life very easy.

Map Of Attractions In Kuala Terengganu

To help you plan your itinerary below is a map which shows where all the places to go in Kuala Terengganu are located.

Things To Do In Kuala Terengganu map

Kuala Terengganu With Kids

I visited Kuala Terengganu with my kids and found it a very easy place to be. Most places to visit Kuala Terengganu are short and sweet which is excellent for kids with short attention spans!

They also particularly loved the Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu thanks to all the buildings, cars, planes and boats.

The night market at Batu Buruk is also a winner, particularly if you’re after a Kuala Terengganu night activity.

Playground behind Town City Food Court

There is also a playground out the back of the Town City Food Court perfect for a play while you get something to eat. The riverfront area is also good to get rid of some energy. There is another great playground near Shahbandar Jetty.

Final Words

It can be easy to skip over Kuala Terengganu on your way elsewhere but don’t! A visit here is an easy way to see a different slice of Malaysia with some low key attractions and great food.

Even if you can only spare a night on your way to Redang Island, it’s worth it! Especially as many of the Kuala Terengganu activities are a short walk from each other meaning you can explore a lot in even just a morning or evening. This city is great for walking around in and people are very friendly and helpful.

Don’t miss it!

Things to do in Terengganu

When Malaysians travel to Terengganu , we’d usually head straight to the acclaimed Redang Island and Perhentian Islands. It’s rare for most to stop by other parts of Terengganu for a vacay.

But little may we know that we’ve been missing out on other unbelievably gorgeous natural wonders that Terengganu has to offer. From an emerald-green river, to a bright blue lake, and an enchanting firefly park, here is a list of lesser-known attractions to hit up the next time you’re in Terengganu.

– Outdoor activities –

1. kenyir lake – take a dip with fish, island-hop, and see nature up close.

things to do in terengganu - kenyir lake

Kenyir Lake (Tasik Kenyir) is synonymous with Terengganu as it’s a major attraction in the state for both locals and tourists. Located in Hulu Terengganu, it’s an artificial lake covering a vast 38,000 hectares. The lake is surrounded by luscious rainforests and is home to a myriad of fishes.

There is an abundance of things to do on the lake and its many islands – a haven for outdoor and nature lovers alike. Avoid the north-east monsoon season around October to March every year when the lake is closed.

You can explore the Bewah Cave (Gua Bewah) and marvel at its incredible formations and limestone hills, while keeping a look out for common cave inhabitants such as bats, spiders, and frogs.

Or head over to Kelah Fish Sanctuary where visitors will be able to dip in the river together with kelah fishes. The fishes are aplenty, and they will swarm you if you feed them so you’ll get to feel their scales and gentle bites which have been described as “massaging.”

For a more relaxing activity, take a stroll through the Herbs Garden (Taman Herba) and Orchid Garden (Taman Orkid) on Sah Kecil Island. You’ll get to enjoy a leisurely walk while learning about the many herbs and spices native to Malaysia.

One of the most accessible and popular ones is the Lasir Waterfall . You can have a relaxing picnic by the stream, swim in it, or try out waterfall abseiling if you’re into more adventurous activities.

Bukit Singa is one of the more popular hiking trails here as the view from the top is second to none. The elevation isn’t very high and the journey will only take around an hour, but the cliff trails are rocky and slippery, so it’s highly recommended to trek with proper hiking shoes.

How to get to Pulau Kapas:

Hop on a 20-minute boat ride from Marang Jetty for around RM30.

Alternatively, Marang Jetty is 30 minutes away by car from Kuala Terengganu.

Sungai Bangan’s waters are emerald in colour and unbelievably clear – a true natural wonder that hasn’t been discovered by many because of the challenging hike. The water runs deep – around 2.5m – so do practice caution when swimming.

Of course, this means you should not swim in it, but the lake’s picturesque landscape and bright blue waters make it a highly Instagrammable place. So just keep a safe distance when you’re posing for the ‘gram.

10 Reasons Why Nature Lovers Should Visit Beautiful Terengganu in Malaysia

tourism in terengganu

While we often fly at least three hours for a quick getaway to that much needed retail therapy or  digital detox , we often forget about the possible adventures that await right next door.

The Malaysia we know embodies many things; from the scrumptious cuisines that reside in Penang’s streets , to the back-breaking (but wholly satisfying) ascent to Mount Kinabalu,  and even to the enigmatic Kuching city.  It is almost as though there is a state that reflects every aspect of our personality. But have we truly explored it all?

Sitting on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Terengganu remains as one of the lesser-known states there. While seemingly small in size, Terengganu holds several surprises that has its travellers squealing in delight. Here are 10 reasons why you should visit beautiful Terengganu.

1) The Scenic Terengganu River & A Mosque Made Of Glass And Steel

Terengganu TTI Cruise

One of the best ways to see the sights along the scenic Terengganu river is to hop on the TTI River Cruise and embark on a 45-minute sightseeing tour. Relish in the gentle breeze and the warmth of the sun as the cruise sails down the estuary where you get to witness the contrast of the old and modern development, and other landmarks or attractions set in Kular Terengganu.

Terengganu Crystal Mosque

Amongst the several attractions along the river, one stands out. A magnificent structure made of glass and steel, the Masjid Krystal, also known as the Crystal Mosque, sits on a man-made island — Pulau Wan Man — at the edge of Terengganu River. At noon or sundown, you will be able to take in the splendour of the mosque as its reflection illuminates off the water.

Cost: RM 22.90 (approx. SGD 7.70) Address: Jetty Tok Ku Paloh, Pulau Wan Man, 21000 Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia Opening Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: 10am to 7pm; Friday to Sunday, and Malaysia School and Public Holidays: 9am to 7pm (Break for Friday Prayer: 11.30am to 2.30pm) Closed every Tuesdays except Malaysia School Holidays and PH

2) The Enthralling ‘Almost-extinct’ Gamelan Show At Warisan Sari

Terengganu Gamelan Show

A traditional ensemble music performance of Indonesian origin, comprising mostly percussive instruments, the Gamelan show is sometimes joined with exquisite dance performers, enthralling the crowd with their fluid moves paired with gentle beats.

The Malay Gamelan, however, is different from its Indonesian counterpart and was almost left extinct.

Terengganu Gamelan Show Close-up

Here’s the rundown of what happened: Once an exclusive form of royal entertainment in Pahang and Terengganu in the early-1900s, the Malay Gamelan met the demise of its patrons as with the forthcoming World War II. As a result, the fine art was lost until someone discovered the abandoned instruments in the 1960s, which spurred an onslaught of events which reunited musicians, re-established dancers, and eventually its first-ever public performance.

Cost:  Free Address:  Warisan SaRi, No 1 Lorong Warisan, Jalan Tok Jembal, 21300 Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia Opening Hours: Every Saturday, 11am-12pm

3) Lang Tengah Island: The Quiet Respite Amid Summer Bay Lang Island Resort

tourism in terengganu

The eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia is home to several scenic islands, like the popular Redang Island, Perhentian Kecil or Perhentian Besar to list a few, and among which one stands out.

Just 22.5 kilometres off Merang Jetty, the lesser developed Lang Tengah Island prides itself to be the ideal getaway for travellers seeking some quiet respite.

Helming TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence (2017) , the charming  Summer Bay Lang Island Resort  is one of the four resorts that resides on the quiet, scenic island.

Terengganuu Lang Tengah Island Resort

With a KTV lounge, massage parlour, swimming pool, a cosy bar that serves affordable tipple and snacks, and a kickass team of affable staff to boot, Summer Bay Lang Island Resort is far from anything lacklustre.

*Pro-tip:  The island is off-bounds to visitors during the Monsoon season (from November to March), and the best time to visit would be from May to August when the water is the clearest and the weather ideal.

Getting there:

tourism in terengganu

If you are keen for a stay at Summer Bay Lang Island Resort, simply make a booking reservation on their website . Each booking entitles a two-way boat transfer service at the Merang Jetty (note: not Marang Jetty).

Terengganu Ferry to Lang Tengah Island 2

Cost:  Starting from RM 500 (approx. SGD 160 for a 2D1N stay, inclusive of a 2-way boat transfer from Merang Jetty) Address: Merang Jetty, D Coconut Lagoon, 21010 Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia Opening Hours:   Ferry from Merang Jetty departs at 10.30 am *Pro-tip: Expect strong winds slamming into your face as your ferry proceeds to sail to the island, having a pair of shades will protect you from the sun’s rays and not wearing caps is advisable.

4) The Adorable Fishes And Mesmerising Corals You Get To Snorkel With Near Lang Tengah Island

Beautiful Terengganu

As you approach Lang Tengah Island, you would probably notice that the seawater near the island is pristine with turquoise (or teal) hue. It goes without saying that Lang Tengah Island is also home to some gorgeous snorkeling spots.

Terengganu Snorkeling Spot 3

A stay at Summer Bay Lang Island Resort comes with daily complimentary snorkelling trips (or diving trip), where you get to swim alongside with adorable fishes or view the gorgeous corals.

Prior to setting off, a meticulous safety brief will be conducted by the guide, who will elaborate on the dos and don’ts while you are amid the sea’s embrace. Throughout the snorkeling session, you will be placed under close supervision as well.

And if you are lucky enough, you will be able to swim alongside baby sharks or turtles too.

Terengganu Snorkeling Spot Selfie 4

While it makes sense for one to apply sunblock to protect your skin from the sun’s tenacity, you are advised not to do so at Lang Tengah if you are intending to head into the waters. This helps protect the corals, planktons and other aquamarine life residing in it.

5) The Captivating Sunset By The Beach On Lang Tengah Island

The sandy white beach situated right outside Summer Bay Lang Island Resort on Lang Tengah Island is dotted with several beach benches, making it the perfect chilling spot to catch the spectacular sunset.

Terengganuu Lang Tengah Island Sunset With Renzze and Mshannahchia

Alternatively, you could reminisce childhood days by the beach and build sandcastles, or bask in the gorgeous sunset hues and snap a picture or two for memory sake.

6) Island Hop On Lake Kenyir, Southeast Asia’s Largest Man-made Lake

Terengganu Lake Kenyir

Also known as Southeast Asia’s largest man-made lake, Lake Kenyir was constructed in 1985, boasting an abundance of freshwater fishes, exotic wildlife, and over 340 small islets with some containing captivating waterfalls, mysterious caves and resorts.

Tours are usually organised by the resorts near the area, but you can consider hopping onto one guided by one of the local fishermen on their boat at a more affordable (and negotiable) price. Keep in mind that, if you do not meet the minimal threshold, the tour will not depart or you may end up paying for more.

Address: Pengkalan Gawi Jetty, Tasik Kenyir, 21700 Kuala Berang, Terengganu, Malaysia

Taman Orkid

tourism in terengganu

Taman Orkid, or loosely translated as Orchid Garden, is home to a large variety of orchid species. A suspending bridge connects the entrance and the jetty point to where the glorious floras are located. Needless to say, it makes quite the Instagram-worthy spot as well.

tourism in terengganu

The serene islet collects various orchid species from around the world. Unfortunately, my short stint proved to be futile as most of the orchids have yet bloomed. But I dare imagine the sight of witnessing these intricate species blossoming while perched on tree trunks and fences to be a refreshing one.

Entrance Fee: RM 6 (approx. SGD 2)

Taman Herba

tourism in terengganu

Taman Herba, also known as Herb Garden, houses a spectrum of herbs including those that are edible, fit for aromatherapy, containing medicinal values, as well as those rich in antioxidants properties.

tourism in terengganu

Alternatively, you could take a leap of faith and sample on intriguing herbal teas, such as the mildly bitter Tongkat Ali Hitam for men or Kacip Fatimah for women.

Entrance Fee: RM 5 (approx. SGD 1.6) *Pro-tip: Before embarking on your island-hopping adventure, it is wise to stock up on some fluid, apply some sunblock, and bring along a simple first-aid kit as well as some form of insect repellent.

7) The Gorgeous Murals And Art Installations In Chinatown’s Inconspicuous Alleys

Terengganu Chinatown

You will need no direction finding Chinatown, or as the locals call it Teng Lang Po or Kampung Cina.  One major giveaway would be the huge entrance arch that is adorned with a pair of Chinese dragons at the top. Another would be the rows of red lanterns strung across parallel shophouses.

Terengganu Chinatown Murals

An eyeshot away from the mouth of Terengganu river and the trading port, the Chinatown today was where the earliest Chinese settlements congregate. But gone are the days of dilapidated shophouses, foul streets filled with dangerous alleys. The Chinatown today is far from that.

Collage Art Installation in Chinatown, Terengganu

Although minuscule in size, the street now exudes a vibe of youthful exuberance, quite evident from the riot of colours stemming from gorgeous murals, repainted shophouses, and cool art installations that reside in the inconspicuous alleys.

Terengganu Chinatown Art Installation Locks 2

One of which is the Lover’s Lane where lovers can write their names onto padlocks and having them fixed onto the walls as a remembrance.

Walking down these alleys, one cannot help but to look up (and it pays to do so). At the Payang Memory Lane, a cluster of colourful umbrellas hangs above, symbolising the grand notion of unity in diversity. While the traditional wau bulan kites, symbolic to Malaysia’s east coast, hover overhead at the Malay-themed Haji Awang Besar Lane.

Address: Jalan Bandar, Kuala Terengganu 20100, Malaysia *Pro-tip:  Avoid heading to Chinatown in the evening  as most of the shops would have already closed.

8) The Wide Assortment Of Keropok Lekor You Get To Haggle At The Pasar Payang Central Market

Pasar Payang Terengganu

Located just a stone’s throw away from Terengganu’s Chinatown, the Pasar Payang Central Market is a popular tourist spot offering a variety of handicrafts, such as batik or silk, brasswares, fresh produce, and more importantly, Keropok.

Terengganu Kerepok

You will be spoilt for choices with the extensive array of Keropok Lekor readily available (and at affordable prices too) at each vendor in the central market. These traditional Malay fish fritter snack has its origin right in Terengganu and is made from fish paste, sago flour and seasonings. You are required to deep-fry them before pairing it with spicy Terengganu sauce.

Cost:  Starting from RM 10 (approx. SGD 3.30) Address: Jalan Bandar, Terengganu, 20100 Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia Opening Hours: 6am-5pm *Pro-tip:  Catch the central market at its liveliest in the morning from 6am to 9am. Learning how to haggle in Malay will undoubtedly make bargaining more fruitful as well.

9) Try Nasi Dagang, A Rice Speciality Of Terengganu

Terengganu Nasi Dagang Flatlay

Nasi Dagang , or Trader’s Rice, is a common breakfast dish comprising white rice steamed with glutinous rice, with the subsequent addition of coconut milk (for that added aromatic lemak kick and flavour), fried shallots, ginger and other spices before being wrapped in banana leaf.

Terengganu Nasi Dagang Close Up

It is then paired with the specially prepared  gulai ikan tongkol (tuna fish curry) and served with pickled cucumbers as a side. Like the Nasi Lemak in Singapore, the popular rice dish can be found in most eateries in Terengganu and Kelantan. One of the famous ones includes Mak Ngah Nasi Dagang.

Cost: From RM 3 (approx. SGD 1)

10) The Historical And Gorgeous Terrapuri Heritage Village

tourism in terengganu

Drawing inspiration from the 17th century Terengganu Palace, the Terrapuri Heritage Village is a restoration and conservation project-cum-villa, boasting 29 restored antique Malay houses that span between 100 to 250 years old.

Terengganu Terrapuri Heritage Village Room

Each of these ancient houses has been meticulously refurbished to emulate the village into its former glory, even details pertaining to Malay Feng-shui were not forgotten as well. Besides the enriching Malay architecture, the luxurious villas come with indoor air-conditioning, rain showerhead, wooden bathtubs and more.

tourism in terengganu

An outdoor pool sits at the back of the villa, where you can head in for a quick dip. Right at the entrance of the villa, a scenic beachfront facing the South China Sea awaits.

Cost:  Starting from RM 529 per night (approx. SGD 170 for a one night stay in the Superior Villa) Address: Kg.Mangkuk, 22120 Setiu, Terengganu, Malaysia

Getting from Singapore to Terengganu

Singaporeans are no stranger when it comes to traversing to Johor Bahru. Among the multiple ways to do so, I find the bus routes there to be convenient and more affordable.

1) From Kranji MRT station Hop on the “ 170x ” SBS bus or the “ CW1 ” Causeway Link Bus.

2) From Queenstreet Bus Terminal Hop on the “ 170 “,” 170A ” SBS buses or the “ CW2 ” Causeway Link Bus.

Air Asia now flies three flights a week from Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru to Sultan Mahmud Airport in Terengganu. The duration of each flight is roughly an hour. It is best to book early to get lower fares.

This post is brought to you by AirAsia and Malaysia Tourism Board .

Best Market places in Terengganu

Terengganu boasts many vibrant marketplaces that offer a glimpse into the local culture, crafts, and culinary delights. These range in specialty, from cultural markets that focus on traditional clothing and jewelry, to food markets with hawkers and vendors selling all manner of local and international cuisine. They’re dotted all over Terengganu, but here we’ve listed some of the more popular ones.

1. Pasar Payang (Payang Market)

Pasar Payang (Payang Market)

Pasar Payang is one of the most famous markets in Terengganu. Sitting in the heart of Kuala Terengganu, this bustling marketplace offers a wide range of goods, including traditional Malay batik, textiles, handicrafts, souvenirs, and local snacks. It’s a fantastic place to experience the local atmosphere and shop for unique items you can’t find anywhere else.

2. Pasar Batu Buruk (Batu Buruk Market)

Pasar Batu Buruk (Batu Buruk Market)

Located near Batu Buruk Beach in Kuala Terengganu, this market is known for its variety of street food. Visitors can enjoy local delicacies while taking in the coastal breeze. The market is especially lively in the evenings when more vendors begin to open shop. This market is definitely geared more towards foodies, though some vendors do offer other types of goods as well.

3. Bazaar Warisan (Warisan Bazaar)

Bazaar Warisan (Warisan Bazaar)

Bazaar Warisan is a heritage market located in Kampung China. It focuses on traditional crafts, textiles, and souvenirs that showcase the cultural heritage of Terengganu. The market is an excellent place to discover unique handmade items and souvenirs of your time in Terengganu. As is the case with the other markets, Bazaar Warisan also brings with it a drove of food vendors.

Popular Beach Islands in Terengganu

Ask anyone about Terengganu, and the first thing that comes are its stunning islands and beaches. Pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life attract tourists in droves, quickly becoming a highlight of the Terengganu tourism experience. If you’re looking for a nice beach day to rest and relax, then here are some good options.

1. Pulau Redang (Redang Island)

Pulau Redang (Redang Island)

Redang Island is the most popular tourist destination in Terengganu, and it’s abundantly clear why. With beautiful powdery white sand beaches and picturesque surroundings, it’s a dream for anyone wanting to go on a beach vacation. For fans of snorkeling and diving, Redang is also a marine conservation area, which makes it the perfect spot for some snorkeling action.

Redang Island has a ton of amenities available for visitors, with higher levels of development compared to the other islands. Accommodations range from the lavish and luxurious to more affordable options. Redang is also always eventful, which can make it less relaxing, but enticing for those who like always having things to do.

2. Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian Island)

Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian Island)

The Perhentian Islands are made up of two landmasses, those being Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil. Perhentian Besar is naturally the bigger of the two, and also the more laid-back one. With lush jungles and beautiful beaches, Pulau Perhentian Besar has a ton to do, while also maintaining its calm, relaxing atmosphere and vibe.

Of the two islands, Perhentian Besar offers more for families and people just looking to relax. Accommodation is generally a bit pricier than Perhentian Kecil, with more luxurious options being the focus. The nature trails on Perhentian Besar are easy to follow and well maintained as well. Generally, Perhentian Besar is a good place to go if you’re looking to unwind more than you want to party.

3. Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island)

Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island)

The smaller counterpart to Pulau Perhentian Besar makes up for its size in its sheer breadth of activities. Pulau Perhentian Kecil has the same beautiful beaches, but it has a much livelier atmosphere and vibe. Generally, things are more condensed, meaning you’ll get to see more people, experience a lot more things and have more fun here.

Some chalets and resorts are a fair bit more isolated, but generally with Perhentian Kecil, you’re missing out if you aren’t close to the center of the island. Perhentian Kecil is also generally a bit more affordable than Perhentian Besar, with lower-cost resorts and cheaper eats all around the island. When night hits, things still go back to being laid-back, giving it a nice balance.

4. Pulau Kapas (Kapas Island)

 Pulau Kapas (Kapas Island)

If you’re more interested in a quiet, serene island experience, then Pulau Kapas is the island for you. Kapas has maintained a more laid-back and undeveloped atmosphere. Accommodations on the island range from simple chalets to eco-friendly resorts, allowing visitors to connect with nature. The calm and clear waters make it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and simply lounging by the sea.

While Kapas is a relatively small island, it offers nature trails that lead through its lush interior. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the island’s greenery, and the viewpoints provide breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding seas. Kapas Island is also a nesting ground for turtles, and during the nesting season, visitors may have the chance to witness turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs.

Terengganu hosts agro madani sales in 14 locations, madani raya shopping targets rm1.6mil sales.

MELAKA: The organising of Aidilfitri Madani events at various levels, especially in states, can serve as closure to various recent issue and boost the muhibbah spirit among the multiracial society in the country.

The Prime Minister’s senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said it included the Aidilfitri Madani events in six states that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is slated to attend, and will serve not only as platforms to foster closer ties with Malaysians but provide the opportunity to clarify recent issues so that the public will not be swayed by wrong information, such as that which was played up by the opposition or unscrupulous parties.

Johor, Sabah, Melaka, Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah will each hold the Aidilfitri Madani event before Penang will host the close of the Aidilfitri celebrations and the Madani Rakyat progamme.

"Normally, people would go to Seri Perdana in Putrajaya in past programmes so we know that those programmes have certain impact and this time we have a different strategy as the Prime Minister wants to spend time by going to those states,” he told reporters at the Aidilfitri MADANI event in Taman Bukit Piatu Mutiara here on Friday (April 12).

He added that the Prime Minister’s presence in those states was to also meet and be briefed by state leaders and discuss certain projects that would be priorities and require support from the Federal Government.

"This method is more effective and better as the Prime Minister, as we know, likes to listen from the public directly about the issues in each state as every state has issues that need to be resolved, or long-standing issues that need a solution from the Prime Minister,” he said.

Over 2,000 visitors from all walks of life attended today’s Aidilfitri Madani event, with several state leaders attending, including Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Melaka Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Ngwee Hee Sem and Melaka Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman. - Bernama
