RED BUS TOURS

Glacier national park’s in-park transportation.

The scenery and wildlife in Glacier National Park provides constant amazement and inspiration, for young and old alike. A fun way to reveal the deeper significance and meanings of the park is to spend time on an interpretive tour.

The famous Red Buses serve as an ideal way to see and learn more about Glacier National Park. In fact, the vintage 1930s buses are part of the human  history and heritage of the park . As much of the park’s scenery is vertically oriented, the roll-back tops are perfect for providing full views of the stunning mountains, and the area’s signature Big Sky. The guides are seasoned park veterans, who are here because they love the park and enjoy sharing the park with visitors.

The fleet of 33 buses in Glacier is widely considered to be the oldest touring fleet of vehicles anywhere in the world, so due to the historic nature of the Red Buses, seats are not designed to the same standards as today’s buses. The red buses seat 17 people, with 4 across on bench seating. These are snug quarters with limited space. The Red Bus tours tend to sell out on a daily basis, so please don’t expect room to stretch out.

Special Notes: Each bus can accommodate a maximum of 17 passengers plus one driver. We cannot guarantee that all guests in a large group will be on the same bus. Construction delays may occur. Full tour dependent upon access to Logan Pass Visitor Center. Tours will go rain or shine and if the full tour is not available due to the Going-to-the-Sun Road closures,  alternate routes  will be provided. Beginning and ending dates are subject to change based on the seasonal opening and closing of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. For current road status updates, we recommend visiting the  National Park Services website .

2023 Jayco Herald Sun Tour cancelled but set to return in 2024

Planning, timing and workforce challenges force cancellation for a third year

The winner of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour when it last ran in 2020 was this year's Giro d'Italia victor Jai Hindley

International racing is returning to Australia after the COVID-19 pandemic with the Santos Tour Down Under confirmed for January 2023. However the Jayco Herald Sun Tour organisers confirmed on Monday that their race would not be held in 2023 as other factors hampered the return of the nation's oldest stage race.

The men's race was first held in 1952 and a women's edition was also added in 2018, with the stage-races providing an opportunity for local riders and teams to race against WorldTour professionals who were in Australian for the Santos Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

While other races are returning after the re-opening of borders this year, the men's and women's Herald Sun Tour – last won by Jai Hindley and Lucy Kennedy in 2020 – will be absent for an extra year.

The organisers said in statement that ongoing logistical, planning, timing, and workforce challenges had led to the decision.

“This has not been an easy decision, or easy process to arrive at this point, and as custodians of this historic race we are disappointed that it will not be proceeding in 2023," Jayco Herald Sun Tour Chairman, Tom Salom, said.

Tour Down Under returns with Mount Lofty and a prologue but no Willunga Hill Hindley sews up Herald Sun Tour title as Groves takes final stage Kennedy takes overall Women's Herald Sun Tour title after thrilling finale

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour generally has a stage in Victoria's capital city of Melbourne and winds its way through the state, not only giving domestic riders a rare opportunity to race against top level cyclists but many communities a chance to turn out and watch high level racing on their home roads. "We thank the government and industry stakeholders for their collective efforts, and we are acutely aware of the importance of this as an event across the state," said Salom.

"Our focus will now turn to the future and planning for the 2024 edition of Australia's oldest stage race which proudly lists Olympians and Grand Tour winners amongst its honour roll." The Jayco Herald Sun Tour usually rounds out the summer of Australian racing in early February.

The 2023 Australian race calendar will begin with the Bay Crits in Geelong from January 1 to 3, continuing with the Australian National Road Championships from January 7 to 10 and then heading over to South Australia for the men's and women's Tour Down Under from January 14 to 22.

The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will now signal the end of the Australian block of racing, with the Women's WorldTour race on  January 28 and the men's WorldTour race on January 29.

Blommer Chocolate to close Chicago factory

Blommer will move its headquarters and a research and development center to the merchandise mart..

Snow falls outside of Blommer Chocolate Co.'s factory at 600 W. Kinzie St.

Blommer Chocolate Co. factory at 600 W. Kinzie St. will be closing at the end of May. It opened in 1939 when the company was founded.

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Blommer Chocolate Co. will close its factory in the heart of Chicago at the end of May due to increasing costs of running the aging facility at 600 W. Kinzie St., the company announced on Friday.

It will cut 250 jobs, according to a spokesperson.

“The location and age of the Chicago facility coupled with increasing repair and maintenance of the building and equipment has elevated operating costs and created production reliability issues,” Blommer said in a statement.

Employees learned of the closure Friday afternoon. Several people were seen walking out of the factory carrying pieces of paper with information about next steps.

Some employees will move to other roles within the company, others to competing confectioneries who have agreed to take them on.

“They’ve been working very hard to keep this plant operational for many years. They know the struggles that it’s taken to run something of this vintage,” Robert Karr, senior vice president of Blommer, said. “They’ve taken the news as we have — very hard — in the sense that we’ve all been so committed. And while we don't want this day to come, it’s a sad day, but it’s also a part of the future.”

The factory known for wafting mouth-watering chocolate aromas across downtown Chicago opened in 1939 when the company was founded. The site is also the original manufacturing plant.

Karr said while the loss of the chocolate smell will leave a void downtown, the company is looking forward to the future.

“This is where our headquarters is located so we’re not leaving Chicago,” he said. “We have people when we walk around the neighborhood from all over the world wondering where the chocolate is and we’re all going to miss it. It’s a big part of Chicago.”

‘Missed for sure’

Blommer’s corporate headquarters and lab will remain at the Merchandise Mart. The company said its new research and development center will open at the Mart in fall 2024 and will focus on processing and ingredient research, “concept tasting” and more.

Over the next several years, Blommer will invest $100 million in its remaining production facilities in East Greenville, Pennsylvania; Union City, California; and Campbellford, Ontario in Canada.

Fulton River District residents were shocked at hearing about the closing. Many said the smells from the neighboring factory were a part of their daily routines.

“I guess it’s not going to smell as good around here anymore, unfortunately,” Tom Favero, 26, said. "It’ll be missed for sure.”

Christy Kelly, 36, and Matt Kelly, 38, got used to smelling chocolate and can’t imagine it being gone.

“We call it ‘the terrible factory smell’ ironically because we love it,” Matt Kelly. “We sit on the balcony of our place in the summer and when the wind carries the smell over it’s like the best place on earth.”

“It’s such a bummer," Christy Kelly said. "We’ll have to melt our own chocolate on our stove now.”

Karr, of Blommer, said the factory produced over 200 million pounds of chocolate a year. It officially ceased production Friday, and the equipment will be moved to other facilities.

Overall, according to the company, Blommer employs about 900 people and is the largest cocoa processor and ingredient chocolate supplier in North America.

Candymaking history

Henry Blommer Sr. and his brothers Al and Bernard founded Bloomer in 1939. Their grandfather, Conrad Blommer, a Milwaukee confectioner, opened Blommer Ice Cream, which became Wisconsin Creameries, according to Blommer’s website.

In 2018, Japanese company Fuji Oil Holdings Inc. announced it would purchase Blommer for about $750 million. Then in 2020, the chocolate maker shuttered its store inside the factory to allow expansion of the 270,000-square-foot facility.

  • Blommer Chocolate Co. shutting down store to expand factory

The company has faced its share of setbacks in Chicago. In 2005, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cited Blommer for alleged clean air violations after a citizen complained about odor and emissions. An EPA inspector observed dust from Blommer's grinders “that exceeded limits” for the amount of light obscured by emissions. And the facility has survived a number of fires , most recently in 2020.

But its financial hurdles appeared to have drawn concern from Fuji Oil in January, when it cut its fiscal year net profit forecast, citing high costs at Blommer, according to MarketWatch.

In an investor presentation released Friday, Fuji Oil said the chocolate maker's profitability "deteriorated significantly due to changes in the U.S. labor market, a sharp rise in interest rates, and a sharp increase in manufacturing costs caused by skyrocketing cocoa prices." It also noted "extraordinary losses" of more than $60 million for the third quarter of fiscal year 2023.

The shuttering of Blommer’s factory closes another chapter in Chicago’s candymaking history, dating from the late 1800s. Tootsie Rolls, Brach’s, Frango, Wrigley Gum, Fannie May, and Mars Candy all have roots in the city . Fannie May’s first store was in the Loop and Frango mints were produced at Marshall Field's department store on State Street for 70 years.

2024 Players Championship money: Purse, payout breakdown, winner’s share

Xander Schauffele holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round at TPC Sawgrass.

Getty Images

Xander Schauffele’s resume includes an Olympic gold medal, Tour Championship title and WGC victory. On Sunday at TPC Sawgrass, though, he has a chance to add a victory that would top them all.

After a flawless third-round 65, Schauffele holds a one-stroke lead heading into the final round at the 2024 Players Championship. With a win he’d not only add a win at the PGA Tour’s premier event, but also earn himself the hefty $4.5 million first-place prize.

To get his hands on the trophy, he’ll have to hold off a series of challengers featuring some of the Tour’s best. Men’s golf’s two most recent major winners — Brian Harman and Wyndham Clark — are each within two strokes of Schauffele, while major winners Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler remain in chase as well.

Check out below for an entire purse breakdown for the 2024 Players Championship.
