West Indies “A” confident as they depart for tour of South Africa

Head Coach Andre Coley said the West Indies “A” team tour of South Africa was important to defining and developing the depth of talent in the red ball formats The team, led by wicketkeeper/batsman Joshua Da Silva, left on Tuesday for a trip on which they will play three “Tests” against South Africa “A” between 21 November and 8 December in Benoni, East London, and Bloemfontein.

south africa tour of west indies

“It will give us an opportunity to boost our red-ball opportunities outside of the Caribbean. Earlier this year, we went to Bangladesh, and we did well there, and now we are going to another part of the world – South Africa,”

Coley said in an interview with CWI Media.

“It will give us an opportunity to explore the brand of cricket that we want to play. Our next international assignment is in Australia, and six months after that we go to England, so this A team is positioned to offer red-ball playing opportunities on the back of the just-concluded CG United Super50 Cup.”

Coley added:

“The South Africans are a team that want to play a specific way, and they always look to challenge you, but they respect our players. The pitches have offered pace, have offered bounce, so you will have pitches on which you can trust the bounce."
“Players can, therefore, express themselves, whether they are batting or bowling, but it has never really been a place where the spinners have excelled, so it’s also an opportunity for our spinners to learn to be effective in those conditions, and I am looking forward to being there.”

Coley added that the main objective was to come away from the trip with wins under the team’s belt, but there were other goals that will be equally important for the development of the West Indies squad.

“You learn to win over time. We want to see our primary batsman scoring loads of runs, as well as the all-rounders and bowlers averaging above 20 or 30 and building lower order partnerships, that will help to expand our batting options,”
“Once we are able to tick the boxes that we have agreed upon, 75 per cent or more of what we have aimed for, that will help to define success.”

Tevin Imlach the other wicket-keeper/batsman was named the vice captain and the squad which includes five players with senior Test experience – Da Silva, left-handers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kirk McKenzie, and fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis.

Team Management: Andre Coley (Head Coach), Dwain Gill (Team Manager), Jimmy Adams (Assistant Coach), Shaun Tait (Assistant Coach), Barrington Gayle (Physiotherapist), Asia Joseph (Strength & Conditioning Coach)

West Indies Test Squad For South Africa Tour 2023

West Indies Test Squad For South Africa Tour 2023

Barbados Pride right-arm seamer Akeem Jordan and Windward Islands Volcanoes left-handed batter Alick Athanaze were named in the 15-member West Indies squad for the upcoming two-Test series in South Africa.

During the West Indies tour of South Africa, both teams will play 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is between February 28 to March 28 across 4 different venues.

The 2-Test match series will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23. West Indies are currently placed sixth in the ICC WTC 2021-23 points table while South Africa are placed fourth. A series win can help the West Indies move above the Proteas in the standings.

The series will kick start with a Test match at SuperSport Park, Centurion while the ODI series will begin at Buffalo Park, East London. The T20I series will begin on March 25 at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

The series will be played parallel to the first edition of the Women’s Premier League which is scheduled to kick start on March 4.

Lead selector Desmond Haynes praised the two future prospects. “Athanaze is one of the young players who we have invested in, and he played well in the ‘A Team’ and CWI President’s XI,” Haynes said on Athanaze.

“He showed great promise in the CG United Super50 last year and then got his first hundred in the West Indies Championship last week. We believe he should be given an opportunity at this level. He has also showed leadership, as captain of the Windwards at the start of this season.

“Jordan has been very impressive from last year, he has continued to bowl well, and has been excellent in the first two matches so far this year,” Haynes added while discussing Jordan.

“He is very skillful, can bowl the new ball, and looks to put the ball in the right areas. He is also a sharp fielder and good catcher close to the wicket. This will be a challenging tour. There is no easy away tour in Test cricket. South Africa have a good team, but I am sure we will be up for the task and will do well in these two Test matches.”

Ahead of the tour, Cricket West Indies named Rovman Powell as T20I Captain and Shai Hope as the ODI captain.

Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Jermaine Blackwood (vc), Alick Athanaze, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Roston Chase, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Akeem Jordan, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach, Devon Thomas

FST Hosts 29th Mona Symposium on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry

The UWI, Mona Campus

The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies, Mona, recently hosted the 29th Mona Symposium on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry from January 3 to 6, 2024.

Bringing together a diverse group of local and international chemists, the symposium served as a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge research insights and findings in various areas, including anti-tumour agents, products with medical imaging properties, anti-convulsives, anti-inflammatories, anti-obesity compounds, hallucinogens, and environmental monitoring.

Started in 1966, the biennial Mona Symposium has become the oldest Chemistry conference in the English-speaking Caribbean, showcasing the enduring contributions of local and regional scientists to this vital research area.

The event featured seven distinguished plenary lectures, fourteen short papers, and numerous poster presentations, creating a collaborative environment for attendees from the USA, Canada, Japan, Poland, Trinidad & Tobago, South Africa, and Jamaica. Notable figures included Distinguished Professor James Cook and the father-son duo behind 'Kare Chemical Technologies,' Dr. Kamaluddin Abdur-Rashid and Kareem Abdur-Rashid.

Graduate students and early career researchers seized the opportunity to present their research in a poster session, with Areka Rattery, Ronnique Blair, and Zoie Aimey winning top honours for their outstanding presentations.

A special session paid tribute to the late Dr. Trevor Yee, recognizing his integral role in the development of The Natural Products Institute. Beyond academic sessions, the symposium facilitated networking, socializing, and camaraderie through various events, including a cocktail reception, a concert featuring The UWI Panoridim Steel Orchestra, a conference dinner, and a day trip to UWI's Lyssons Beach.

The symposium, organized by Professor Emeritus Paul Reese and his team, transcended traditional academic boundaries, fostering a melting pot of ideas, collaboration, and celebration. Professor Reese expressed satisfaction with the excellent presentations and highlighted the symposium's evolution to cover all aspects of Organic Chemistry and its interface with other disciplines.

The Department of Chemistry and the Faculty of Science & Technology at Mona extend gratitude to all participants, partners, and sponsors, including the American Chemical Society, Scientific Research Council, The Office of the Vice Chancellor, The Mona Campus, Royal Jamaican Rums and Spirits Limited, Conrad Douglas & Associates Limited, and Coffee Solutions Limited, for contributing to the success of the Mona Symposium on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry 2024. The exchange of knowledge during the event is expected to shape the future of natural products and medicinal chemistry globally.
