A Hat-Trick in Soccer: Everything You Need to Know

what is a hat-trick image

Scoring a hat-trick in a soccer game is an incredible moment for any player. But understanding what a hat-trick is and why it’s called a hat-trick is not something everybody knows the answer to.

In this article, I will answer both these questions and help you understand what you need to know about a hat-trick.

So, let’s start by answering the question:

What is a hat-trick?

A hat-trick in soccer is when one player scores three goals in a single soccer game. These three goals don’t have to be scored consecutively or in the same style. Any player can score a hat-trick at any point during a game.

This definition of a hat-trick explains what it is, but the term “hat-trick” can seem like a bizarre expression to use to describe scoring goals. Thankfully, I’ll explain how it came to be referred to as that below.

What Defines a Hat-Trick

As with many sports, the sport of soccer uses various terms and expressions to describe something that is happening or has happened. When it comes to the number of goals scored, two of the most common words you will hear are a player having scored a “brace” or a “hat-trick.”

The term “hat-trick” in soccer is used when a single player scores three goals in one game. These three goals don’t have to be scored consecutively or in the same style. The phrase “hat-trick” originated in the sport of cricket.

To discover what a “brace” is in soccer, check out my article – A Brace in Soccer: What does it mean? – explaining the definition of that term; otherwise, keep reading to find more out about a hat-trick.

As you just read, there are three factors that make up a hat-trick :

  • It has to be 3 goals
  • All scored by the same player
  • And all goals scored in a single game

As long as the set of goals fulfills these criteria, the set of goals is called a hat-trick. Anything else about the goals or how they were scored doesn’t matter.

For instance, the goals don’t have to be scored consecutively. A set of goals is still a hat-trick whether a player has scored each goal one after another in a game or whether there were 1, 2, or even 3 goals between each goal scored by the individual player.

How quickly the goals are scored is also irrelevant to whether a set of goals is called a hat-trick or not. A player can score all three goals in one 15-minute period or spread over the entire length of the game.

It also doesn’t matter how a player scores the goals . A player can score all three goals with their head, or each goal may be scored using a different body part than the one used when scoring the previous goal.

What matters is that 3 goals are scored by the same player in one game. This is all that is needed to count as a hat-trick.

Perfect Hat-Trick

The only time it does matter how the 3 goals are scored is if a player is attempting to score what is known as a “Perfect Hat-trick.”

In soccer, a perfect hat-trick is a term used to describe the action of one player scoring three specific types of goals in a single soccer game: One goal must be scored with the player’s right foot, one with the player’s left foot, and one goal with the player’s head. [source]

A perfect hat-trick is considered to be a level above a normal hat-trick as the player has showcased a variety of different skills by scoring each goal differently.

Why It’s Called a Hat-Trick

Now we’ve defined what a hat-trick is, the bigger question for many people is: why is it called a hat-trick?

Scoring three goals in a game of soccer is called a hat-trick because of a game of cricket in 1858 when a player was awarded a hat following the achievement of getting 3 players out with 3 consecutive throws of the ball. This feat became known as a “hat-trick” and in the following year s soccer adopted this term for when a player had scored 3 goals. [source]

Now, there’s a high chance many of you reading this don’t fully understand the game of cricket. I know I don’t! But let me briefly explain the part that is important to understanding why scoring 3 goals is known as a hat-trick.

In cricket, a player on one team throws a cricket ball towards 3 wooden stakes in the ground hoping to knock 2 smaller pieces of wood, known as the bails, off the top of the 2 stakes.

As this player throws the ball, a player from the opposing team stands in front of the stakes, defending them with a cricket bat.

If the player throwing the ball knocks the bails off the stakes, then the player defending them is out and is replaced by another player from the opposing team.

In cricket, it is exceptionally rare for one player to hit the stakes in the ground with three consecutive throws. Far rarer than it is for a soccer player to score 3 goals in a game. So when this happened in a game of cricket in England in 1858, this was considered a significant event.

As was the custom at the time, a collection was held by all the spectators at the game to honor this great achievement by the cricket player Heathman Harman Stephenson. With the money collected from this, a hat was purchased for the player, and from then on the term hat-trick was used to refer to any time this feat was repeated. [source]

From its use in cricket, the term hat-trick began to be used for other situations where 3 goals, points, or 3 feats of any sort was achieved.

One of these situations was in soccer. Soon after the term began being used in cricket, players and fans began to use the term hat-trick to refer to a player scoring 3 goals in a soccer game, and the use of that term still carries on to this day.

Is There a Prize for a Hat-Trick?

There is no official prize for scoring a hat-trick in a soccer game. However, it is a tradition for a player who has scored a hat-trick to keep the soccer ball used in that game as a reward or reminder of their success on the soccer field that day.

Why Is It Called a Hat Trick?

The sports phrase “hat trick” has its origins in cricket and later became widely used in various sports, especially in hockey and soccer.

The term “hat trick” originally referred to a bowler taking three wickets in three consecutive deliveries in cricket – analogous to three consecutive strikeouts by a pitcher in baseball.

The exact origin of the phrase is somewhat disputed, but it is believed to have evolved from a tradition in the 19th century when English cricketers who achieved this feat were often rewarded with a new hat.

The term “hat trick” was used to describe this accomplishment, as the cricketer would receive a new hat as a symbol of their success.

Over time, the term “hat trick” was adopted by other sports to describe a player scoring three goals or points in a single game.

What Is The Rat Trick in Florida?

The “rat trick” is a phrase associated with the Florida Panthers and can be traced back to the Panthers’ home opener on October 8, 1995.

In a twist of fate, a rat found its way into the team’s dressing room, sending shockwaves through the players.

One player, Scott Mellanby, reacted in a way that would go down in hockey lore—he dispatched the intruder with his hockey stick, propelling it across the locker room.

What followed was sheer magic on the ice, as Mellanby netted two goals, powering the Panthers to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.

As Mellanby’s remarkable performance unfolded, Panthers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck couldn’t help but add a touch of humor to the story.

He described Mellanby’s achievement as a “rat trick” when speaking to reporters after the game, despite the fact that it wasn’t a traditional hat trick (scoring three goals in a single game).

The term “rat trick” took flight and soon became synonymous with a quirky yet endearing Panthers’ tradition.

In the next few games, fans in the arena joined the fun by tossing plastic rats onto the ice to celebrate the team’s goals. The number of rats increased with each victory, creating an unforgettable spectacle in the NHL.

By the time the Panthers reached the 1996 playoffs, thousands of plastic rats rained down onto the ice after every Panthers goal.

The tradition was so popular that it led to an off-season rule change by the NHL, allowing referees to penalize the home team if fans disrupted the game by throwing objects onto the ice.

Notably, the Panthers’ playoff appearance coincided with the “Year of the Rat” in the Chinese zodiac, fueling fans’ beliefs that the team was destined for great luck in the postseason.

This convergence of events added to the charm and uniqueness of the “rat trick” tradition.

The “rat trick” is now an enduring chapter in the history of the Florida Panthers, a quirky celebration that turned an unexpected encounter with a rat into a symbol of team spirit, tenacity, and the incredible bond between fans and their team.

Where Does the Phrase ‘Hat Trick’ Come From?

By sean hutchinson | jun 14, 2023, 12:49 pm edt.

A hat being thrown after Mark Stone of the Las Vegas Golden Knights scored a hat trick in game five of the 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Final.

The 2023 NHL playoffs just wrapped up, with the Las Vegas Golden Knights claiming Lord Stanley’s coveted cup against the Florida Panthers in a 9-3 victory in game five. Winning the cup requires scoring goals, of course, and some players are so on fire that they score three goals in a single game (as Mark Stone did last night).

The Sport That Started It All (And It Wasn’t Hockey)

Claims to the popularization of the phrase, the story according to the hockey hall of fame.

This phenomenal feat is known as a hat trick , a term used in a handful of sports to indicate three individual achievements in a given match-up. But where did the phrase come from, and what does scoring three goals in a game have to do with hats?

The origins of the phrase don’t have anything to do with hockey at all. In fact, the first use of the term hat trick comes from a specific cricket match from 1858. Bowler H.H. Stephenson , playing for an all-England squad versus a team from Hallam, South Yorkshire, took three consecutive wickets at Hyde Park Cricket Grounds in Sheffield—meaning he hit the three wooden stakes behind the batter three consecutive times. A collection was held because of his outstanding feat and he was presented with a hat that was bought using the proceeds.

Just when the phrase made the jump to ice hockey and other sports is a matter of debate: The Oxford English Dictionary pegs the date to the 1890s, while Online Etymology Dictionary has circa 1909 ; still other sources believe it didn’t happen until the 1930s or ’40s.

The exact source that popularized the phrase is also fairly hazy. One Montreal haberdasher called Henri Henri claims they “brought the ... expression into the world of hockey” after they gave all players who scored three goals during one game at the Montreal Forum a hat on the house.

Another claim comes from the Canadian city of Guelph, whose 1947 Junior-A team was sponsored by Biltmore Hats and dubbed the “Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters.” As a marketing ploy to advertise its new style of fedora, the company would give away a brand new hat to any league player who scored three goals in a single game.

The Hockey Hall of Fame officially recognizes a different story as the true origin of the phrase hat trick when it comes to hockey.

When Chicago Blackhawks winger Alex Kaleta visited Sammy Taft’s Toronto haberdashery in January 1946 before a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he fell in love with a fedora. But Kaleta—who had just returned to playing professional hockey after serving in the Canadian military during World War II—didn’t have enough money to buy the hat. So Taft cut him a deal: If Kaleta could score three goals against the Maple Leafs at the game that night, he’d give him the hat for free.

“There was no rhyme or reason to it,” Taft recalled in 1992. “I just, for some reason, said, ‘You go out there and score three goals tonight and I’ll give you the hat.’”

Kaleta went on to score four goals in the game (Chicago wound up losing to Toronto 6-5) and got a free hat out of his on-ice feat. Newspapers picked up the story, which took off. According to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Taft then “promoted his hats by giving one to any player who scored three goals during a National Hockey League game in Toronto,” and the rest is hockey history.

A version of this story ran in 2014; it has been updated for 2023.

History of Hat Tricks: From Legend to Reality

The term “hat trick” is now a common phrase in the world of hockey. It refers to a player scoring three goals in a single game. But do you know how the term originated? The history of the hat trick goes way back, long before ice hockey was even a sport. In this article, we’ll dive into the origins of the term, and how it came to be associated with hockey.

Legend has it that the term “hat trick” originated in cricket. It was said that a bowler who took three wickets in three consecutive deliveries was awarded a hat. The term then crossed over to hockey in the late 1800s. Fans would throw their hats onto the ice to celebrate a player’s achievement of scoring three goals in a single game. From there, the term “hat trick” was born.

The Early Days of Hat Tricks in Hockey

In the early days of hockey, hat tricks were a rare occurrence. Players didn’t have the same level of skill and training that they do today. Scoring three goals in a single game was seen as a remarkable feat, and fans would go wild with excitement. One of the earliest recorded instances of a hat trick being celebrated in hockey was in 1904.

The Evolution of Hat Tricks in Hockey

  • Over time, hat tricks have become more common in hockey. Players are now faster, stronger, and more skilled than ever before. They have access to better training facilities and technology, which helps them hone their skills.
  • The rules of hockey have also changed over the years, making it easier for players to score. For example, the introduction of the forward pass in the 1920s made it easier for teams to move the puck up the ice and create scoring opportunities.
  • Despite these changes, scoring a hat trick is still an impressive achievement. It requires skill, perseverance, and a bit of luck. When a player scores a hat trick, it’s not just a personal accomplishment – it’s a sign of the team’s success as well.

Celebrating Hat Tricks Today

Today, hat tricks are still celebrated with the same level of excitement as they were in the early days of hockey. Fans throw their hats onto the ice to honor the player who achieved the feat. Some teams even have special traditions when it comes to hat tricks. For example, the Detroit Red Wings present their players with a fedora after they score a hat trick.

If you’re a fan of hockey, you know that there’s nothing quite as thrilling as seeing a player score a hat trick. It’s a moment of pure excitement and joy, not just for the player, but for the entire team and fan base. So the next time you’re watching a game and you see a player score three goals in a single game, take a moment to appreciate the history and tradition behind the term “hat trick.”

Types of Hat Tricks: Natural, Gordie Howe, and the Others

When it comes to hat tricks in hockey, there are a few different types that players can achieve. The most well-known type is the natural hat trick, which occurs when a player scores three goals in a row during a single game. Another type of hat trick is the Gordie Howe hat trick, which involves a player scoring a goal, recording an assist, and getting into a fight all in the same game.

However, there are a few other types of hat tricks that are less commonly discussed. One of these is the “pure” hat trick, which is similar to a natural hat trick but allows for other events (such as a power play goal) to occur between the goals. Another type is the “four-goal game,” which involves a player scoring four goals in a single game but does not necessarily require them to be consecutive.

Natural Hat Tricks

  • A natural hat trick is the most impressive type of hat trick that a player can achieve. This occurs when a player scores three consecutive goals during a single game, without any other player on either team scoring in between. The term “natural” refers to the fact that the player achieves the feat through their own efforts, rather than through lucky bounces or other factors.
  • In order to score a natural hat trick, a player must have a combination of skill, focus, and luck. They need to be in the right place at the right time to score each of their goals, and they also need to have the mental fortitude to stay focused and motivated throughout the game.

Gordie Howe Hat Tricks

  • The Gordie Howe hat trick is named after the famous Detroit Red Wings player who was known for his toughness and all-around skill on the ice. This type of hat trick involves a player scoring a goal, recording an assist, and getting into a fight all in the same game.
  • The Gordie Howe hat trick is a rare feat, as it requires a player to not only score and assist, but also to engage in physical play and stand up for themselves and their team.

Other Types of Hat Tricks

  • The pure hat trick is a type of hat trick that is similar to the natural hat trick, but allows for other events to occur between the goals. For example, a player could score two goals, another player could score a goal, and then the original player could score their third goal to complete the pure hat trick.
  • The four-goal game is a type of hat trick that involves a player scoring four goals in a single game. This type of hat trick is impressive in its own right, but does not require the consecutive goals that are necessary for a natural or pure hat trick.

Now that you know about the different types of hat tricks in hockey, you can appreciate the skill and effort that goes into achieving this impressive feat. Whether it’s a natural hat trick, a Gordie Howe hat trick, or another type of hat trick, these achievements are always worth celebrating and remembering.

The Thrill of the Hunt: Players Who Scored the Most Hat Tricks

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of seeing a player score a hat trick during a hockey game. For those unfamiliar, a hat trick is when a player scores three goals in a single game. It’s a rare feat that requires a combination of skill, teamwork, and a bit of luck. But which players have achieved this feat the most?

In the history of the NHL, there are a select few players who stand out when it comes to hat tricks. These players have the ability to light up the scoreboard and thrill fans with their scoring prowess. Here are three players who have scored the most hat tricks in NHL history:

Wayne Gretzky

  • Gretzky is often referred to as the greatest hockey player of all time, and his record of 50 hat tricks certainly supports that claim.
  • Throughout his career, Gretzky scored an incredible 894 goals, making him the highest scorer in NHL history.
  • His combination of skill, vision, and hockey IQ made him a dominant force on the ice, and his ability to score hat tricks was just one aspect of his incredible talent.

Mario Lemieux

  • Lemieux was a prolific scorer during his career, and he tallied an impressive 40 hat tricks along the way.
  • Despite facing a number of health challenges, including a battle with cancer, Lemieux remained one of the most dominant players in the game throughout his career.
  • His combination of size, strength, and skill made him a nightmare for opposing defenders, and he remains one of the most beloved players in NHL history.
  • Hull was one of the most prolific goal scorers of his era, and he recorded an impressive 33 hat tricks during his career.
  • Known for his deadly accurate shot and quick release, Hull was a nightmare for opposing goaltenders.
  • He was a key member of the Dallas Stars team that won the Stanley Cup in 1999, and his scoring touch helped him earn a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

These players are just a few of the many who have thrilled fans with their scoring prowess over the years. Whether you’re a die-hard hockey fan or a casual observer, there’s nothing quite like the excitement of watching a player score a hat trick.

Unwritten Rules: What Happens When You Score a Hat Trick?

Scoring a hat trick in hockey is no small feat. In fact, it’s one of the most coveted accomplishments for any player on the ice. But what happens after the hat trick is scored? Are there any unwritten rules that players follow?

While there are no official rules or guidelines, there are certainly some common practices that players tend to follow. For starters, it’s customary for the player who scored the hat trick to keep the game puck as a memento of their achievement. It’s also common for teammates to congratulate the player and for the crowd to throw hats onto the ice in celebration.

Post-Game Celebrations

  • After the game, it’s typical for the player who scored the hat trick to be interviewed by the media. They may also receive recognition from the league or team.
  • Teammates will often give the player a round of applause in the locker room and may even give them a special nickname based on their accomplishment.

Opposing Teams and Fans

But what about the opposing team and their fans? While it’s certainly a disappointing moment for them, it’s generally considered good sportsmanship to acknowledge the achievement of the player who scored the hat trick. Players may give a quick handshake or nod of respect, and fans may even give a round of applause.

  • However, if the hat trick is scored against a rival team, there may be some extra taunting or jeering from the opposing fans.
  • It’s important to note that while hat tricks are celebrated, they are not always a cause for excessive celebration. If a team is down by a significant amount or if the game is already out of reach, the hat trick may not be as impactful.

In the end, scoring a hat trick is a momentous occasion for any player, and it’s important to respect the achievement while also keeping in mind the unwritten rules and practices that surround the event.

It floats, which means it’s handy for water adventures—we wore it in the ocean and were able to find it easily any time a rogue wave came in a little too fast and knocked it off. It has anti-microbial technology to ensure it stays clean and smell-free, and is breathable and recycled. What’s not to love about that?

The brim on this travel hat is flatter than some users might be used to, but you can train some curvature into it over time. The exterior has reflective accents so that you can be seen on early morning or late night runs, there are holes in the materials for breathability, and you can throw it in the washer occasionally to ensure it stays clean.

This isn’t the most packable hat; however, it folds up easily and will fit inside most daypacks and larger slings without an issue. It’s lightweight, too, so it won’t hold you back if you attach it to your crossbody bag. Depending on how you travel, this might be the best travel hat for you!

  • It floats, which is ideal for aquatic adventures
  • The anti-microbial technology ensures it doesn’t get musty
  • It isn’t the most packable hat on this list
  • Some users won’t like how flat the brim is

Gravel The Travelers Hat

The Gravel Travelers Hat looks like something you’d wear running errands across your hometown, but it has features that make it one of the best travel hat models for those looking for a packable hat for their next trip. Plus, it comes in seven colorways at the time of writing, so you can find one that fits the vibe you’re trying to accomplish. How fun is that?

If you’ve got a larger head or a lot of hair, you might find the fit isn’t perfect. Plus, the five-panel style might not be for everyone. However, we dig the look of this hat and its sleek and subtle logo. Some packable hat models are logo-free, which can look awkward. However, with the Gravel Travelers Hat, you’ve got something on the front panel that isn’t too in your face, which is the best of both worlds.

When you’re ready to travel, you can fold it down and use it as a packable hat. After unfolding it, there may be some wrinkles initially, but we’ve found that they go away quickly! Whether exploring a new city or hitting the trail in a sunny climate, this might be the best travel hat for your next trip.

  • It folds down smaller than you’d expect
  • The logo is sleek and adds flair
  • Larger heads might not fit
  • The design isn’t for everyone

getaway Pack Light Hat 2.0 Review

Sometimes, packable gear gets a steep price hike because it’s an item known to be used for travel. However, that isn't the case with the getaway Pack Light Hat. At the time of writing, it comes in at under $40, which is a solid deal for a packable hat that packs down small enough to fit into your palm. Plus, the design is simple, offering a sleek look that goes with almost any outfit you might bring on your next trip.

Whereas this hat looks sleek, the design can look slightly bulky on some. If your head doesn’t fill out the materials, this may be more of an issue. However, for most users, this won’t be a problem. For the price, durable materials, and packability features, this is one of the best travel hat models that comes at a budget-friendly price. There are five colorways, at least at the time of writing!

  • Comes at a budget-friendly price
  • It utilizes durable materials, so you don’t have to worry about being gentle with it
  • Materials can look slightly bulky if your head shape doesn’t fill it out
  • Style won’t match all outfits

Parapack P-CAP

Okay, ultralight travelers, this next one is for you. The Parapack P-Cap is a packable hat that also makes it on the list of best travel hat models because it is comfortable and easy to pack and unpack. It’s easy to adjust the size for any head width, it’s UPF 50+ rated, and it’s crafted from recycled materials, too. What’s not to love about that?

Considering how light this thing is (one ounce—that’s the same as a single AA battery!), the materials aren’t as durable as other packable hats on this list. However, that doesn’t mean this thing won’t stand the test of time. It isn’t the most structured hat, which can make it look a little goofy at times; however, it also adds to its breathability, which is helpful. Overall, it wears like you’d expect a packable hat to, so keep that in mind.

If you’re looking for a hat that can pack down tiny, is incredibly lightweight, and comes in multiple colorways, this might be the best travel hat for your next trip!

  • One of the most packable hats on the market
  • The materials are durable for how thin they are
  • The creases can stay longer than you’d like
  • It looks sporty, which might not be your goal

Western Rise Versa Hat Review

If you’re a digital nomad looking for the best travel hat for your journey, you’ve probably come across the Western Rise Versa Hat. Online, it’s touted as one of the most versatile packable hats on the market (hence the name). You might be wondering, does it live up to the hype?

For the most part, yes! It’s sleek, stylish, and packs down small enough to fit inside most places you’d try to store a hat. We’ve found it comfortable across wearers, although it can look large on smaller headed-travelers. There are six colorways available, but none are very saturated, which might be a bummer for some. However, all the available colors are easy to match, which is ideal for the only hat you’ll be bringing on a long trip!

If you’re looking for a do-it-all cap that’ll fit into almost any adventure you can throw at it, this might be the best travel hat for your next journey across the globe! Or, take it to the grocery store. That works, too!

  • It’s a do-it-all hat that works for most situations
  • Packs down small enough for world travel
  • Might not work for smaller-headed travelers
  • No vibrant colors are available at the time of writing

Outdoor Research Radar Pocket Cap

If you’re looking for a packable hat that doesn’t look exactly like every other travel hat on the market, check out the Outdoor Research Radar Pocket Cap. It has a unique style tailored to outdoor activities or crossing a sweaty concrete jungle and offers some of the best sun protection.

Outdoor Research rates this hat for three seasons and touts the TransAction™ headband as an excellent way to keep sweat away from your eyes. It folds up small enough to fit into your pocket, which is where the name comes from. There are three sizes to choose from, so you don’t have to worry about adjusting it once it arrives. There are six colorways available, too, which we dig.

This style won’t be the answer to everyone’s dream of finding the best travel hat for their next adventure. That said, we enjoy the look and think it’s a solid change of pace from other options available on this list!

  • It has a unique style compared to other travel hats
  • It offers UPF 40 protection
  • The look might not work for everyone
  • It isn’t adjustable, so you need the exact right size

Fjallraven Tab Hat

There’s something special about a winter hat that looks like it could have been handcrafted by somebody’s grandma a few decades ago. Whereas the Fjallraven Tab Hat doesn’t go that far, it has a unique heritage look that utilizes modern fabric technology to ensure you stay warm on your next trip.

It’s crafted from waffle-knit recycled polyester, which is comfortable on your head and good for the environment. It proudly uses no animal-derived materials, either, which is a bonus for animal lovers. At the time of writing, five colorways are available, so you can get one that fits the winter vibe you’re going for, regardless of the destination of your next trip.

This isn’t the warmest hat on the market; however, for the price, cold-weather protection provided, and comfort offered, this is one of the best travel hats for fall, light winter, and spring adventures.

  • It has a heritage look with modern fabrics
  • Will work for three seasons
  • Not the warmest hat on the market
  • Small on larger heads, which means it may not fully cover your ears

Smartwool Thermal Merino Stowe Pocket Beanie

Some travelers might struggle to pack a winter hat in their packing list because it feels like a waste of space. After all, most people will survive without one, and it only has one actual use. Can you survive without it? Yes. Should you have to? No! Enter the Smartwool Thermal Merino Stowe Pocket Beanie.

This packable hat is super breathable, folds up incredibly small, and keeps you warm on days that aren’t below freezing. Plus, you can use it as a liner with another hat, which offers extra comfort and heat on frigid days. This is ideal for trips into cold weather featuring outdoor adventures; wear just the Smartwool hat to explore town, though we recommend layering it with another one when heading out into the wild since it’s not the warmest option out there.

It’s crafted from Merino Wool, which is breathable and moisture-wicking, which we dig. If you’re looking for a light hat that won’t break the bank or weigh you down, the Smartwool Thermal Merino Stowe Pocket Beanie might be the best travel hat for you!

  • Packs down tiny
  • Layers very well if you’re heading to frigid climates
  • Alone, it might not be warm enough for super cold trips
  • Not many styling options—what you see is what you get

Arc'teryx Mallow Toque Hat

Sometimes, you want a winter hat that looks good and keeps you warm at the same time. However, many models will excel in one feature or the other, not at the same time. Not the Arc'teryx Mallow Toque Hat! It comes in two colorways, is crafted from a 50/50 blend of tech wool (a polyester/wool mixture) and recycled polyester, and has unique heritage styling that matches most outfits.

The price might seem high for what you get, and whereas we agree with that, this thing is quite warm compared to other hats that look similar. The combination of fabrics keeps you warm without suffocating your head, which is ideal for trips where you’ll be active or walking a lot. The two colorways might not work for all travelers, but they’re more unique than many options on this list, which we dig.

If you’re looking for something a little different from a brand that can be trusted to keep you warm, this might be the best travel hat for your next cold-weather adventure!

  • It looks more stylish than other winter hats
  • Tech wool adds durability and functionality
  • The price is high for what you get
  • Not many colorway options

Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie

Patagonia has been a trusted brand for outdoor enthusiasts for decades. However, just because their gear is tailored for wilderness enthusiasts doesn’t mean that it can’t be used in the city. The Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie is as soft as your favorite sweater, utilizes bluesign® materials, and matches any other Patagonia gear you already have on your packing list.

This isn’t the warmest hat on the market, but isn’t meant to be. Most people don’t need to traverse sub-zero temperatures regularly; if you do, this isn’t the hat for you. This hat does well on an average winter day, in the fall or spring. It’s lightweight, easy to pack down, and comes in four easy-to-match colorways.

It feels a little pricey for what you get at around $50; however, its durability, usability, and sustainability make it a candidate for the best travel hat for your next trip!

  • A warm hat from a trusted brand
  • It matches other Patagonia and similar branded gear
  • This isn’t the warmest hat on the market, especially for the price
  • It might make your head itch slightly

Minus33 Merino Wool Ridge Cuff Beanie

Who said that Merino Wool has to be expensive? The Minus33 Merino Wool Ridge Cuff Beanie proves that Merino Wool doesn’t need to empty your wallet and is one of the best travel fabrics on the market.

This hat is currently available with Amazon Prime shipping, so you can get it for that trip you just remembered that you should have prepared for. It comes in at under $25, which is excellent for Merino Wool. If you aren’t familiar with the material, check out our guide !

We feel that this hat looks a little cheap, which isn’t the end of the world, but it will deter some users. However, over two dozen colorways are available at the time of writing, so you can find one that fits your vibe.

For the price and materials, this is one of the best travel hat models for winter adventures on a budget.

  • This hat is budget-friendly
  • It’s crafted from Merino Wool, so it wicks moisture and can be worn a bunch between washing
  • It looks cheaper than other Merino options we’ve seen—you get what you pay for
  • Material quality isn’t quite up to standard

BAGGU Packable Sun Hat

As far as fashion is concerned, an excellent packable sun hat is only as good as the colorways it comes in. The BAGGU Packable Sun Hat comes in 11 colorways, at least at the time of writing, including fun ones like Clouds, Rowena, and Lemon Tree. In addition to having fun colorways, the brim spans 19.75 inches of coverage in all, which offers ample protection from the sun.

With any sun hat, you risk the wind catching the brim. The BAGGU Packable Sun Hat has materials that make this part of the hat flat, making it easier to catch the wind. However, the tie cord ensures your hat won’t fly off your head, even in the worst wind storms.

The hat is crafted from organic cotton and is machine washable, both of which make for a capable and long-lasting travel companion. If protection from the sun and a cute-looking accessory are what you’re after, this might be the best travel hat for your next trip!

  • A ton of fun colorways are available
  • It has a wide brim for sun protection
  • Can get caught in the wind fairly easily
  • The style isn’t for everyone

FURTALK Beach Hat

Some vacations will take you to the beach, so it’s best to have planned protection from the sun’s rays while you’re there. Even if you wear sunscreen, keeping the sun out of your eyes while you enjoy the water, read a book, or listen to the waves is nice.

The FURTALK Beach Hat comes at a budget-friendly price, has multiple colorways available, and folds down to pack it more easily. When we shoved it into a travel backpack, it came out on the other side of a few airplane rides without any noticeable creases. It’s crafted from paper, cotton, and polyester, which give it the unique straw-hat look without being super breakable.

That said, this isn’t the most durable hat on the market, so it’s best to try and keep it out of harm’s way. It doesn’t have a drawstring on the bottom to keep it from falling off, so it might not be the best choice for a windy day, though we found it fit pretty securely and stayed on well.

Given the price point, sun protection offered, and trendy look, this might be the best packable sun hat for you.

  • It comes in at a budget-friendly price
  • Packs down well for such a large hat
  • Not the most durable hat on this list
  • It’s a one-trick pony; there aren’t a ton of uses for this hat

Wallaroo Hat Company Montecito

Everyone should have an adventure hat that meets their needs. Whether that be a small, packable hat, something that works for the outdoor adventures you’re accustomed to going on, or a hat that offers protection from the sun, it’s an integral part of any packing list. The Wallaroo Montecito is perfect for trips in the sun because of its packable size and stellar sun protection.

You can fold it down to fit inside your daypack or a large sling, and the materials boast UPF 50+ protection, so your head doesn’t get torched by the sun. It comes in around $60, which isn’t bad for a travel hat; however, it is far from the most packable hat on this list and requires a little finnessing to get into your travel bag.

The combination of style and sun protection offered by the Wallaroo Montecito makes this one of the best travel hat models around and one that you’ll probably end up wearing at home, too.

  • Offers UPF 50+ protection
  • Has a focus on style as well as function
  • Doesn’t pack down that small
  • Not a great option for rugged trips because of its basic materials

Tilley Dunes Drifter Hat

Some sun hats are more for looks than packability, which is fine. However, sometimes, you want something you can pack down easily but still offers sun protection. Enter the Tilley Dunes Drifter Hat. This model is easy to pack, is crafted from lightweight materials, and looks stylish and fun at the same time. Two colors are available, too, so you can get one that fits the vibe you’re shooting for.

There are only two sizes, which feels limiting compared to other Tilley hats on the market. You can adjust it once you’ve got it on, which is helpful. The drawstring ensures it won’t fly off your head in the wind and offers a way to hang onto it without holding it in your hand. Just wear it around your neck!

For the durability, lightweight materials used, and sun protection, this might be the best packable sun hat for your next trip into the wild.

  • A do-it-all hat for any adventure, urban or rural
  • The drawstring is helpful and easy to use
  • Only two sizes to choose from
  • It is not the most stylish hat, even if it is functional

Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat

For those who are serious about sun protection, it’s essential to have a do-it-all model in your arsenal that can handle any trip. Here at Pack Hacker, that’s the Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat. We don’t feel that it’s always the best travel hat for the job, but it does most things well, and we’ll explain how.

The materials are durable enough to handle the bumps and knocks of travel, from days fishing for trout on the river to afternoons at the beer garden in the city. However, the fabric is lightweight, so it won’t take up much room or weight inside your pack when you aren’t using it. Remember, it’ll rain in the desert every now and then! Because of the chosen materials (nylon and polyester), it’s easy to pack down.

As we mentioned earlier, this hat isn’t perfect for every trip. However, it has a use for most adventures, and that’s what counts!

  • Offers excellent sun protection
  • Utilizes durable materials
  • Not suitable for fancier occasions
  • Lightweight materials might not be the most durable

So, there you have it: some of the best travel hat brands and models available today. Hopefully, you’ve found a new companion to accompany you on your next trip, whether you’re going to Jersey or Japan. Happy travels!

7 Best Travel Hat Styles

FeltPanama Hat

I’ve been drawn to panama hats lately, and the masculine feel they give to my outfits. I already own a paper one for the summer, and I’m tempted to purchase a felt one similar to the one below. It would be great on a camping trip, and I’m considering bringing one to my next National Park vacation. Really anyplace where you are headed outdoors into nature, and even in cities with a laid back vibe. I would naturally pair the felt hat with a plaid shirt and denim.

You’ll want to look your best when you travel! Read my travel tips to Pack Light Stylishly !

hat trip

Feather Fedora Hat

Everyone should own at least one fedora. It’s the go to hat for most travelers making them one of the best travel hat styles – it pairs well with almost anything. Straw for tropical destinations or felt for the winter, you can’t go wrong with a fedora. The feather embellishment on the one below is a nice change from a typical ribbon band, and taupe is the perfect neutral.

hat trip

Striped Floppy Hat

A glamorous poolside hat is a must for any beach or resort vacation. This wide brim hat doesn’t just look great it’s also functional. Sun protection is so important and most people aren’t diligent about reapplying sunscreen. A wide brim hat will give you an extra layer to keep your face and skin protected.

hat trip

A ladylike style that will add glamour to your ensemble. You can find them with bows, flowers, buckles, or feathers depending on your preference. Bring them on trips to stylish cities, especially in the winter to keep you warm and toasty.

hat trip

Wool Baseball Cap

Everyone loves a baseball cap, and it’s an icon of American style. Instead of sporting your favorite brand or team, opt for something a little more stylish. Pick an interesting material like wool, linen, or tweed. The quilted style below is a smart detail on a solid color.

hat trip

Newsboy Cap

I’m a big fan of a flatcap to top off casual outfits. I own three and was so close to purchasing another on my recent trip to Ireland. They are easy to pack inside your packing cubes , and similar to the panama I like the masculine edge they add to my look. Look for chambray and cotton in the warmer months and plaid and tweed in the fall and winter. These definitely top our best travel hat list!

hat trip

Beanies are a must for cold weather destinations. Ears get cold and you lose heat through your head. This striped version with pom would be a fun addition to your ski outfit. Lighter and open knit styles are good for sightseeing in warmer locales.

Even though they are great for travel, hats aren’t always the easiest to pack. Packable options are out there, but are not always in line with my needs and style preferences. Unstructured hats like the flatcap can easily be laid flat but a panama would be much more difficult. Most travelers solve this problem by wearing them when they travel. Others stuff the interior with items like socks or underwear and pad the crown with clothing.

I love the fedora & baseball hat, just my style. I got a fedora for my last cruise and followed lots of your tips. Thanks. <3 TFG

Glad you found them useful Lisa 🙂

I LOVE the fedora in the top photo (girl w/ backpack and binoculars) – where is it from? Thanks!

This one is a stock photo so we don’t know the location of that hat, but check out number two on the list for similar ideas 🙂

I always take my straw fedora when I go south but I wish I could find a good looking Packable hat. Any suggestions?

Hi Jeanie, here are a few cute packable fedoras:

Hope you like them!

I’ve been taking my straw fedora with me when I go south, but it would be easier to find a good looking Packable hat. Any suggestions?

While I agree you absolutely need to wear a hat in the sun, finding a packable hat for summer climates isn’t that easy! Any suggestions?

Hi Jeanie, great question! Here’s a list we’ve put together for an upcoming article:

I found a stall in the market of the MBK mall in Bangkok that sold natural cotton canvas hats in half a dozen styles. I bought a wide-brimmed one with a bow that has been wonderful for beach and sun travel. Because it’s all cotton I can pack it easily and clean off stains or marks, and I get lots of compliments. It keeps the sun out of my eyes, but doesn’t necessarily block the rays. I wish there were more posh, packable hats like this!

I also found a packable hat I absolutely love and still wear years later. I bought it on Khao San Rd 🙂

Rhiannon

M&S have a lovely wool fedora hat – in black, navy and deep olive-green. I love ’em! M&S sale, here I come, haha! (Oh, and they’re about £30 each, by the way)

Thanks for the tip!

Phebe

I have a cotton crocheted sunhat, with a wide brim that has a thin plastic rim inside to hold the shape of the brim, keeping it from being too floppy. It packs flat, since the crocheted crown just sort of compresses.

It comes with a little floral pin for embellishment, but I periodically change it to something from the countries we visit. A fake frangipani in Samoa, a madras flower in Antigua, things like that.

It goes with everything but winter clothes. For warmth, I have an alpaca beanie in my cold weather packing cube. Takes up less space than a pair of socks.

I just bought a big floppy sunhat too and it’s crushable, love it! Beanies and crochet style hats have always been a staple in my winter wardrobe. Hats are one accessory that completely changes a look.

Margie U.

I always wear a hat for day wear; but, for travel, my go to topper is a beige, packable Columbia Booney. It’s a sun-shielding/water-resisting wide brimmer with an adjustable toggle strap. I like the wide brim for UPF 50 sun protection and to keep the rain off my eyeglasses and face. I also like having the adjustable strap to keep the hat on my head in case of wind. When traveling, my hands are usually busy with luggage, camera, or totes so it’s is nice not having to worry about losing my hat in a sudden gust. If I’m indoors, I merely push it backward and it lays on my back with the strap hanging around my neck. I’m not apt to leave it behind like I’ve done with other hats. It’s functional, nice looking, and works well for me.

I also try to always pack a comfortable hat in the heat. It’s good to have that extra layer of protection between you and the sun!

5 Classic Hat Styles for Travel (& How to Pack Them)

5 Classic Hat Styles for Travel (& how to pack them) - The Awayist. Hats look great in travel photos, instantly elevate your outfit, and provide protection from the sun (not to mention giving you a stylish way to hide less-than-perfect travel hair). From the perfect sun hat to wide brim wool hats, this guide covers my go-to hat styles for travel and how to pack them.

I love a good hat! They look great in travel photos, instantly elevate your outfit, and provide protection from the sun (not to mention giving you a stylish way to hide less-than-perfect travel hair). Whether I’m hiking in a National Park or galavanting through cities like Boston , you’ll catch me sporting a hat on nearly every trip. From the perfect sun hat to wool wide-brim boaters, there’s a hat for just about any occasion. In this guide, I’m breaking down which classic hat styles are my go-to and how to pack them for travel.

These are five classic women’s hat styles for travel and how to pack them.

How to travel with a wide brim hat.

Option 1: Place the hat upside down in your luggage and then fill the crown and pack around it under the brim. This helps protect the shape of the hat while also saving space.

Option 2: No room in your luggage? Use a hat clip (or this more budget-friendly hat clip ) to fasten it to your backpack or bag.

Option 3: Skip all the fancy packing hacks and just carry your hat with you on the plane! While you won’t want to wear it once you’re seated, I find that wide-brim hats make a pretty good phone stand when placed on a tray table. This way, you can Netflix and chill on the plane without having to hold your phone.

Packable Hats

If the above options don’t suit your needs, a packable hat may be the way to go! These wide-brim hats were designed to roll up easily to fit in your backpack, purse, or luggage.

5 Classic Women’s Hat Styles for Travel

Wearing a straw wide brim sun hat and white puff sleeve dress in the spring - Erin Fink, The Awayist

Straw Sun Hat

Sun hats are such a classic because they’re one of the most practical hat choices out there. A wide-brim straw hat is my go-to for any warm-weather trips. They’re the perfect complement to any spring or summer dress, and the wide brim is key for protecting your eyes and skin from any harsh rays. Many even offer UPF sun protection!

hat trip

Wide Brim Felt Hat

When I’m traveling in the mountains or during the fall, I usually reach for a wool felt hat. Equally as functional as a straw sun hat, felt hats have the added seasonal bonus of providing some added warmth as well. Not to mention, they look great in travel photos.

hat trip

Chin Strap Hat

The wind might be my least favorite of the elements, particularly because it’s highly skilled at whisking away one’s headwear. When I’m out for a hike or visiting a city during some gusty weather, hats with a chin strap come to the rescue. Thankfully, these hats are another example of when practicality meets beauty. There’s something about a chin strap that’s just darn adorable!

Wearing a green Gigi Pip ballcap on the Oregon Coast

Sometimes, a wide-brim hat just isn’t the most practical headwear for your outing. On those occasions, the classic ballcap is a go-to for providing some sun coverage. It’s also easy to pack and perfect for effortlessly covering your tresses in-between washes.

hat trip

The ultimate classic and chic hat is definitely the beret. Perfect for the fall and winter months or just for elevating an outfit, a beret is undoubtedly my most frequented style. It’s also a favorite because it takes up virtually no space in your luggage!

hat trip

The obvious choice for winter activities or cold-weather trips, it’s important to have a high-quality stocking cap in your arsenal. When choosing your winter headwear, opt for wool if you’re able. It naturally wicks away moisture, making it the best material for regulating temperature and preventing dampness from sweat or snow.

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

A sun hat is a crucial part of a traveler’s wardrobe, acting as both a style statement and a layer of protection from the natural elements. It’s an especially important piece for those who are conscious of the sun’s harmful effects on their skin and those who spend a significant amount of time on the beach, by the pool, or partaking in other outdoor adventures during their travels.

While donning a floppy, straw, or bucket hat is par for the course on many vacations, there is one question that regularly precedes departure: what’s the best way to travel with a sun hat? After all, many of them can be big, bulky, and awkward to maneuver through airports, or impossible to fit into a suitcase without getting destroyed. There are a variety of tips, tricks, and tools to the art of packing this type of accessory — more on that below — but the easiest answer is to find a packable hat, one that’s designed to be folded or shaped into something more transportable. Read on to discover the best packable sun hats of 2024.

Best Overall

San diego hat company collapsible crown sun hat.

San Diego Hat Company

The collapsible crown allows the hat to be flattened and packed into a suitcase.

This style is not water-resistant.

The San Diego Hat Company Collapsible Crown Sun Hat earns our best overall pick for a few key reasons. Perhaps the most important feature is its ability to protect the wearer from the harsh light and damaging effects of the sun. This particular style is marked with a UPF 50+ rating, and its 4.5-inch brim offers an impressive amount of shade.

It also receives credit for its smart construction. The paper and polyester material is formed into a style that can be easily flattened (hence the term “collapsible” in the product name) and stored in a suitcase or other piece of hand luggage. Since you won’t have to travel with it in hand, you’ll avoid any accidental bumps, spills, or chances of damaging the hat. Finally, the sun hat’s overall look and feel can only be described as classic. The natural fibers coordinate with most summer outfits, and the white, red, or black hatband gives an interesting touch of contrast without taking away from the accessory’s versatility and wearability.

The Details: One size | 75 percent paper, 25 percent polyester

Best Budget

Hzeyn wide brim bucket hat.

It’s under $20 and comes in seven different colors.

The thicker cotton construction is best suited for summer days with more moderate temperatures.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money for a good packable sun hat, a fact proven by the HZEYN Wide Brim Bucket Hat. Coming in at under $20, the casual cotton hat is defined by its protective 4-inch brim, trendy frayed edges, and various colorways (there are seven total to choose from). When it comes time to start packing for your trip, you don’t need to be concerned with how the bucket hat will fit alongside your other belongings. Simply roll it, fold it, or toss it in with the rest of the contents of your suitcase; upon arrival, remove and reshape it as needed.

The Details: One size | 100 percent cotton

Best Designer

Janessa leone felix bucket hat.

It’s a casual style that isn’t just limited to vacations and trips to the beach.

The shape can become distorted from exposure to water.

Janessa Leone counts the likes of Meghan Markle, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Eva Longoria among its fans — so you know you can expect both quality and fashion points from the Los Angeles brand’s hats. Take the Felix Packable Hat, for example. Available in black, chestnut, and natural, the crochet bucket is made of a durable raffia material that’s designed to promote packability; it can be lightly folded without experiencing any long-term damage. The unique short-brim style is also extremely versatile. While you’ll want to bring it on every warm-weather vacation in the foreseeable future, it can also be worn as an everyday hat, especially if you live in a coastal city or town.

The Details: S to XL | Woven raffia

FURTALK Sun Visor

It’s designed to be rolled or folded when not in use.

The top of your head won’t have as much protection as it would when wearing a non-visor sun hat.

Anyone with thick or long hair knows beach days are usually more comfortable when you opt for a visor instead of a full sun hat. The open top leaves room for a bun or ponytail, circumventing any situation where you’d get too hot from your hair being completely tucked under the hat.

At the same time, there’s a decent amount of coverage; the Furtalk Sun Visor’s wide brim extends all the way around, and the paper straw material is certified UPF 50+. Although it only comes in one size, the sun hat can be adjusted via the velcro closure in the back. There’s also a  detachable chin strap in case you’re concerned about a breeze blowing the visor off your head and down the beach.

The Details: One size | Paper straw

Best Bucket Hat

Echo raffia packable bucket hat.

The fit can be adjusted by a nifty drawstring.

It doesn’t provide as much coverage as a floppy or wide-brim hat does.

The bucket hat is said to have originated with farmers and fishermen in Ireland. While it’s gone through several iterations since its earliest days, it’s maintained its position as a piece of headgear that efficiently provides the wearer with relief from the sun’s rays. You wouldn’t necessarily wear this version from Echo on the water (it isn’t waterproof), but it's small and sturdy enough to be folded to fit into any travel bag, beach tote, or suitcase. Not to mention, the adjustable drawstring on the inside of the hat helps to maintain a comfortable, custom fit.

The Details: One size | Raffia and cotton

Best Fedora

Wallaroo hat company outback fedora sun hat.

Wallaroo Hat Company

The fabric is certified UPF 50+, and a soft taco fold can be used to pack it away in your suitcase.

Any dirt or stains will need to be spot cleaned.

A fedora hat might be synonymous with a city aesthetic, but it can also be used as a way to elevate a beachy look; you just need to opt for one made of a more warm-weather-friendly material. The Wallaroo Hat Company Outback Fedora Sun Hat is the perfect example. The paper braid fabric is certified UPF 50+, and both colors (brown and natural) wouldn’t look out of place by the beach or pool. The fedora style comes in two sizes, M/L and L/XL, but the inner drawstring can also be adjusted to find the ideal fit. If you take the proper precautions — don’t overpack, and be sure to support the brim — you can use a taco fold to gently store it in your suitcase during your travel days.

The Details: M/L and L/XL | Paper braid (exclusive of trim)

Best for Hiking

Einskey waterproof wide brim bucket hat.

The built-in sweatband and mesh panels help keep sweat at bay.

It can’t be thrown in the laundry when it needs a refresh; you’ll need to wash it by hand.

The Einskey Waterproof Wide Brim Bucket Hat is every outdoor adventurer’s dream. The unisex style has multiple features and characteristics that align with hiking, camping, or any extended period of time spent outside. For starters, the water-repellent polyester material is incredibly lightweight and effective at preventing rain from getting through the barrier.

The hat maintains a UPF rating of 50+, and the brim measures nearly 4 inches, which means it works wonders to shield your eyes, face, and neck from the sun. Additional attributes include breathable mesh panels, a built-in sweatband, and a convenient ponytail hole. To ensure a proper fit, adjust the elastic drawstring and chin strap as needed. When not in use, it can be folded and stored in your hiking backpack.

The Details: One size | Water-repellent polyester

Best for Boating

Coolibar unisex convertible boating hat.

The neck drape comes in handy on sunny days, but it can also be folded up when it’s not needed.

It’s not the most fashion-forward style.

When hunting for a hat to bring on a boat, you’ll want to look for styles with three specific features. For starters, it needs chin straps; without a way to secure the hat, there’s a very good chance you’ll lose it the second the captain shifts the boat into high gear. You’ll also need a sun hat that provides significant coverage, preferably a style that notes a UPF 50+ rating. Finally, given the nature of boating, the hat should be water-resistant. The Coolibar Unisex Convertible Boating Hat checks each of those boxes and still manages to take it several steps further.

Not only is the polyester hat crushable and packable, but it also comes with an internal cooling mesh sweatband, a removable neck drape, an adjustable elastic cord and toggle, and an anti-glare under-brim lining. Plus, the foam brim is floatable — a feature any regular boater will very much appreciate.

The Details: S to L | Polyester

Best Wide-brim

Free people shoreline bucket hat.

Free People

The removable ties will keep it on your head, even when a breeze catches the extra-wide brim.

The thicker cotton material isn’t designed to wick away moisture.

A wide brim often means the hat itself will take up a lot of precious suitcase real estate, but that’s not the case with the Free People Shoreline Bucket Hat. The slouchy cotton silhouette can be folded as easily as your favorite T-shirt, so it’s perfect for taking along on your next trip to the beach, pool, or lake. It’s especially notable for its exaggerated wide brim — read: your entire face will be shaded — and the removable ties that can be used to secure the hat on your head. It also serves as a closet staple; the two neutral colorways, black and sand, will go with just about everything in your summer wardrobe.

Best Floppy Hat

Free people shady character packable wide brim hat.

The extra-large brim can be reshaped or adjusted based on personal preference.

The 8-inch brim is larger and significantly floppier than your average sun hat.

The appeal of a floppy sun hat — particularly this one from Free People — can be broken down into two categories: fashion and function. The former is all about the chic silhouette; there’s an elegance to the floppy hat that has transcended decades of summer getaways. The latter takes into account how the wide brim (this one measures in at 8 inches) expertly fulfills its duty of shading your face from the bright sunlight. This style, which comes in four different shades, is especially great as its unstructured design allows the wearer to pack it away in a suitcase without ruining any of its noteworthy floppiness.

Most Stylish

Janessa leone harlow open weave straw hat.

The 5-inch brim creates a dramatic silhouette (and provides plenty of shade).

It’s pricier than some of the other styles on this list.

A good sun hat should never sacrifice function in the name of style — and the Harlow Open Weave Straw Hat from Janessa Leone gets top marks in both categories. The brim is completely shapeable, meaning you can lie back in a beach chair without taking off the hat, or pack it without worrying about irrevocably altering its shape. Plus, the open-crown design ensures breathability is never an issue. You’ll just want to be wary of any activities where the hat could get dirty, as you can’t toss it in the wash. Given the construction and raffia material, it’s spot clean only.

Best Straw Hat

It has a simple, timeless design, but the fringed brim adds a touch of personality.

With a price tag of nearly $300, it’s an investment piece.

At first glance, you might think the Eric Javits Squishee® A-List Packable Fedora Hat — with its high-quality material and traditional indented crown — is the type of accessory you’ll need to wear on the plane in order to avoid in-transit damage. But when you look closer, or read the design details, you’ll realize the trademarked straw material can be easily rolled and folded to fit in a suitcase or hand luggage.

Don’t store it too far away, though; as soon as you arrive at your sunny destination, you’ll want to don the hat to protect your face and eyes. The Squishee® straw and 4-inch brim take their job of blocking the sun’s ultraviolet rays seriously; when wearing the straw hat, 95 percent of UVA/UVB rays won’t reach your skin.

Best with UPF Protection

Solbari holiday sun hat upf50+.

Solbari

It offers the most possible sun protection (with a UPF 50+ rating), and the brim shape is customizable.

It might not be as breathable as a straw hat.

If your main priority is finding a packable sun hat that shields you from the sun, you’ll love all of the coverage and travel-friendly features of the Solbari Holiday Sun Hat. The linen and cotton hat boasts a UPF 50+ rating, and its 4-inch brim can be adjusted to block the sun as needed.

The customizability doesn’t end there, though. Feel free to adjust or remove the chin strap, or flip the hat inside out to show off a different color and entirely new look. You’ll also never have to worry about fitting the wide-brim sun hat in your suitcase; the packable construction can be folded as needed.

Tips for Buying Packable Sun Hats

Choose a hat with a high upf rating and adjustable features.

A summer hat’s first job is to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. To determine just how well it will perform, look for its UPF (UV Protection Factor) rating. This number indicates how much a piece of clothing or accessory will protect against ultraviolet energy — and how much UV radiation could reach your skin. A good rule of thumb is to aim for a sun hat with a UPF of 30 or higher; the higher the UPF, the better. The highest UPF rating is 50+, which means the hat will block at least 98 percent of UV radiation. You’ll also want to consider a sun hat that has adjustable features — whether the brim itself can be molded to your preference, the chin straps can be tightened or loosened, or the band can be taken in or out to perfect the fit. This flexibility guarantees the hat will sit atop your head properly, and you’ll get the most wear from your purchase.

Think about your intended activity

Before you purchase a new sun hat for your Caribbean trip or Florida vacation, take a look at your itinerary. While a wide-brim sun hat is ideal for lounging at the beach, you may want something more secure for more active pursuits like hiking or running. Visors combine protection with ventilation (and they’re more comfortable for lying back in a chair). And if you’re going to be on a boat or somewhere especially windy, choose a hat with a chin strap to ensure it doesn’t blow away.

Consider the material

Sun hats come in a variety of different materials and fabrics, but some will keep you cooler and more covered than others. For the most part, you’ll want to stick with breathable, quick-drying, and lightweight materials, such as nylon, linen, straw, palm, and cotton. You can then narrow down your selection based on the materials’ qualities: straw is one of the most breathable options, but it’s harder to clean. Nylon, palm, and linen all serve to wick away moisture; cotton, although comfortable, doesn’t hold its shape when wet.

There’s a reason many of the summer hats you’ll find are made of straw. Thanks to its open weave and overall better circulation, straw tends to keep you the coolest while in the sun. Straw, however, isn’t every traveler’s first choice for a sun hat (as it’s more susceptible to damage caused by moisture and general wear and tear). Travelers in search of an alternative material should look for hats made out of linen, cotton, or sweat-wicking polyester.

There are a few ways to transport a packable sun hat. For the most part, you’ll be able to fold or roll the hat into a more manageable shape; just be sure to check the brand or manufacturer’s instructions first. Another packing hack is to lay the upside-down hat in your suitcase and support the inside of the crown and the brim with clothes (filled packing cubes are also great for this trick). If neither of those strategies works for your particular hat, consider investing in a hat clip; this one from Lindsay Albanese uses magnets and a clip to secure the hat to your tote or luggage.

The wider the hat brim, the more sun protection you can expect. Most travelers should aim to wear a hat with a brim of 3 or more inches; this size usually falls in the “wide brim” category. Of course, wide brims aren’t suitable for all activities, but a wide-brim hat is highly recommended for anyone who will experience prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Final Thoughts: Best Men’s Travel Hats

Best overall performance snapback melin trenches icon hydro.

Black and grey men's baseball cap

Material : Varies by model Pros : Waterproof, stylish, floatable, breathable Cons : A little pricey for a ball cap Best for : Active lifestyles

I’m usually a baseball hat guy when I travel, and melin makes some of the sturdiest and most customizable lids around. The Trenches Icon Hydro is perfect for men who lead an active lifestyle. If you’re searching for a hat that’s equally at home on a sunny beach, coast to coast road trip , or an urban cafe, this is the one.

Melin makes this hat in a load of configurations, styles, and sizes, each made from lightweight, breathable material that floats on water and has a hidden image that’s only visible when wet. It also has a crushable front panel which makes it perfect for people on the go.

Minimalist Do-Everything Cap Western Rise Versa

Western Rise Versa baseball hat

Material : Polyester, spandex, EVA foam bill Pros : Versatile, crushable, lifetime warranty Cons : May not fit larger heads Best for : Small-to-Medium heads wanting a does-it-all hat

The Western Rise Versa is a no-nonsense, minimalist baseball cap with no logos, designs, or distractions. This allows you to wear it with any outfit you please and make fussing over fashion old news.

Its modest looks are only half the story: The four-way stretch material is breathable, waterproof, and wicks moisture away. Its versatile design means you can jam it into your bag and use it anywhere from the gym to crowded city streets.

Dad Hat With Airplane Logo NxTSTOP Liftoff

NxTSTOP Liftoff

Material : Polyester, Spandex Pros : Curved bill, great for medium-to-large heads Cons : Some may find it a little dorky Best for : Dads, travel addicts

Here’s a ‘cool’ hat on Amazon with a classic dad hat design with a curved bill that’s clearly  made for travel. I like the ballcap design and may snag one of these bad boys for my upcoming trip to San Francisco.

In particular, I like the lightweight and breathable mesh and the front airplane logo so I can let others know exactly where my priorities lie. The NxTSTOP liftoff is the only hat on this list that’s not marketed as “crushable,” but it’s still travel friendly as can be.

Crushable & Ventilated Sun Cap Coolibar Kaden

Coolibar Kaden sun cap

Material : Cotton, polyester Pros : Easy to pack; ample sun protection Cons : Even with ventilation, it can run warm Best for : Long days in the sun – hiking, biking, beaching

I found two scabby ‘sunspots’ (keratosis) on my face the other day, so I’m taking sun protection seriously here in my mid-thirties. When I visit super-sunny South Africa this summer, I’ll be wearing a hat like this!

I like that this good-looking safari sun hat has a ‘stampede string’ like my favorite cowboy hat, plus it’s crushable, breathable, and extremely well-reviewed. Protect that precious skin, fellas.

UPF 50+ Straw Sun Hat Sunday Afternoons Havana

Sunday Afternoons Straw Havana

Material : 90% Paper, 10% Polyester Pros : Inexpensive, stylish, packable Cons : I honestly don’t see any cons here Best for : Protecting your head from the sun

Release your inner Hunter S. Thompson and embark on your very own Rum Diaries  adventure. This Sunday Afternoons faux-straw hat is perfect for blocking the sun as you slyly gallivant around the Caribbean looking for trouble.

It’s a classic travel hat — affordable, stylish, and packable — and a favorite of both men and women. So, like a good sweater, keep your eye on it or your lady friend may run away with it while you’re sleeping one off.

Indiana Jones Style Outback Fedora Dorfman Pacific

Brown Dorfman Pacific Outback Fedora

Material : 100% wool Pros : Waterproof, crushable, mysterious Cons : A little stuffy in hot weather Best for : Looking dashing as you swing from vine to vine

Just a heads up, you’ll need to be a particular type of traveler to do justice to this hat. So ask yourself — am I the kind of guy who can steal cursed artifacts, run a gauntlet of booby traps, fend off snakes, and still somehow manage to escape with his life? If so, proceed.

If you’re not already Indiana Jones, don’t expect this hat to make you his dead ringer. But you can count on it to reliably protect your melon from sun and rain while conferring a certain panache. Take that, René Belloq !

Wear Anywhere Cowboy Hat Overland Teton

Overland Teton wool cowboy headwear

Material : 100% wool Pros : Easy to pack, waterproof, classic style Cons : City slickers need not apply Best for : Country music stars and their fans

Here’s our favorite cowboy-style travel hat on the market. It’s easy to figure out why: The wide brim casts a lot of shade, and like others on this list, you can jam it into your pack and have it bounce back into shape when you get to your destination.

It’s 100% wool, so it will repel the occasional monsoon and dry quickly. Teton makes this hat in three different colors and five different sizes. And it saves time, too — you won’t ever need to pull out your passport to prove you’re an American.

Crushable Wool & Felt Fedora Scala Classico

Black Scala Classico wool and felt fedora

Material : 100% Wool Pros : Attitude, weather-proof, travel-friendly Cons : You have to be worthy of it Best for : Cool and confident dudes with a sense of style

This ain’t your grandpappy’s fedora, gents. The Sala Classico is a century-old style that will make you look hot off the press. And durable? Try crushing it, rolling it, and jamming it into your pack — it’s up for anything.

With a bit of Bogart attitude and a soft-spoken tip of the brim, you’ll have the ladies ready to swoon. Scoop them up before they hit the floor revive them gently with a scotch. That’s ageless gallantry, and this is the travel hat for you, comrade.

Made-in-Ireland Flat Cap Biddy Murphy

Biddy Murphy Irish-style flat cap

Material : 100% wool Pros : Compact, unique, and oh-so continental Cons : Would be fightin’ words to diss this Irish classic Best for : Bald fellas like me

Guess what? With a last name like mine (Riley), I’m duty-bound to love the timeless Irish styling of this cap. Next time I tour my ancestral island, I’ll definitely be sporting one of these puppies and doing my best to blend in.

The Biddy Murphy is an Irish newsboy hat made in County Kerry, Ireland. This 100% wool cap is naturally weather-resistant and sheds rain, sleet, and snow. So pop it into your travel bag and get ready to down a Guinness (or several).

Stylin’ Washed Bucket Lid adidas Originals

adidas Originals bucket lid

Material : Cotton Pros : Keeps the sun off your neck Cons : Looks kinda ’90s, cotton doesn’t shed water Best for : Looking cool while turning back the clock

My big head doesn’t look good in most bucket hats, but Adidas has me pondering long and hard over their dazzling assortment of colors and patterns. I might just toss one of these into my pack the next time I’m traveling in Eastern Europe or Asia.

The Adidas Originals bucket hat is versatile and relaxed and goes with any travel attire. It’s also the most affordable hat on this list, so if you’re traveling on a budget, this might save you a few quid.

Beanie for Cold Weather American Giant Shop

American Giant Shop cold-weather beanie

Material : 100% acrylic Pros : Simple, warm, made in the USA Cons : Colors are a bit bland, not waterproof Best for : Cold ears on cool dudes

My great-uncle Leon is 80-some years old and has a cool AF sense of style. Nowadays his ears get cold easily, so I bought him this beanie to take on our trip to DC last month. Boom, toasty ears, no problem.

He loves his new beanie from American Giant Shop. It’s so simple, comfortable, and warm. Leon is a traditionalist and loves that this made in USA cap has minimal branding. Throw one in your winter travel bag next time and pretend you’re as cool as Leon. (Good luck with that.)

Factors We Considered When Picking Products

Silhouette of a traveling man in an airport wearing a fedora next to his luggage looking out towards the tarmac

There’s no magic formula for choosing hats in general — if it feels good and looks good, you’re off to a good start. But when you add “travel-friendly” as a requirement, you’ve got to consider specific attributes, including:

When traveling, a hat will either be on your head or mixed in with your other gear. When it’s on your head, it may be there for hours, exposed to sun, wind, and rain. You’ll sweat into it, and at some point it may start to itch. Choose hats that are soft, properly sized, and won’t lose their shape.

In general, wool and synthetics are more water-resistant, breathable, and odor-free than cotton. I mostly prefer 100% wool because it doesn’t get soaking wet the way cotton does, and it stays fresh-smelling for longer periods.

Style of Hat

Headgear comes in two basic flavors — Hats (‘has a brim but no visor’) and Caps (‘has a visor but no brim’) — and both travel equally well. Choose from this list based on the conditions you’ll encounter when traveling and then add a dash of your personal style. You can’t go wrong… unless you choose a neon plaid propellor beanie.

On a serious note, please  do  choose hats that offer good sun protection. The folks at  SkinCancer.org say, “the best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back.”

Packability/Crushability

Once you take off your hat, it’s got to go somewhere… in a coat pocket, perhaps, or flattened and layered into your luggage. If you want it spring back into proper shape, look for products that advertise as ‘crushable’ or ‘packable.’ Wool felt performs well, as do many synthetics. However, straw is brittle and will crack or crumble, and cotton will wrinkle and crease.

Sad story: I took a spiffy fedora with me to Europe last year, but had to hastily jam it into my bag at one point. In Italy, it emerged crushed and never regained its former glory. Since then I’ve only traveled with caps that can take a beating and still look fresh.

You put a lot of effort and expense into planning the perfect trip, so don’t cheap out on that fashion statement sitting above your ears. Invest in one of these quality products that are sure to survive your globetrotting adventures. Go for it.

When you look good, you feel good. Spending a little extra on an accessory like a hat may seem superfluous, but in reality, can you put a price on self-confidence? Yes. Yes, you can. But most of these hats are affordable and can be the perfect accent for any travel outfit. Splurge a little, buddy!

Man in a field wearing a 2023 fedora and looking towards mountains and meadows in the distance

Wherever you’re headed next, you can’t go wrong with any of the best men’s travel hats. But which one? Will you tour the Temple of Doom in your Indiana Jones Hat from Dorfman Pacific ? Swing up into the saddle in a cowboy hat from Overland ? Or make evening rounds in NYC wearing a snapback from Melin ?

Of course, there’s no reason to stop at just one new hat. I’ve got busy travel plans and the hat I take skiing in Telluride isn’t likely to be the same one I’ll need while sailing in the Mediterranean. And I’m always in the market for a new EDC hat for running errands or people-watching on the mall.

Just remember that the key element of any good travel hat for men is that it must be crushable, packable, and weather resistant. ‘Stylish’ is my close second consideration since I need all the help I can get in that department.

And third, let’s not forget why hats were invented in the first place — to protect us from the imposing sun. A hat that aces all three of those considerations will be your reliable travel companion for years to come.

Chris kreider’s hat trick propels rangers to sixth consecutive win after losing blake wheeler to injury.

Before this one, there was legitimate debate to be conducted over whether the Rangers’ greatest priority was adding a third-line center or a top-line right wing to play with Mika Zibabejad and Chris Kreider in the approach to the March 8 trade deadline.

But it appears as if the debate was settled on the Garden ice at 10:47 of the first period Thursday when the BFF’s right wing Blake Wheeler sustained what appeared to be a serious right leg/ankle injury on a hit from behind the Montreal net from Jayden Struble.

The 37-year-old winger writhed in pain after his right ankle bent back when he was thrown down. He was unable to place any weight on the foot as he was helped off the ice through the nearby Zamboni door by his teammates.

Chris Kreider (left, No. 20) celebrates after scoring one of his three goals in the Rangers' 7-4 win over the Canadiens.

“We’ll evaluate it and address it [Friday], but that was tough for Blake,” head coach Peter Laviolette said after the Blueshirts’ 7-4 victory extended the club’s winning streak to six games. “He’s a veteran player who came here for a reason and when you see something like that happen, it’s tough.”

The Rangers rotated right wings for the remainder of the game with the BFF’s, who combined for four goals that included Kreider’s sixth career hat trick. Jimmy Vesey shifted from the checking line to get the most extended look in that spot after Artemi Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere, Kaapo Kakko and, yes, even center Vincent Trocheck got spins with Nos. 20 and 93.

GM Chris Drury and Laviolette can opt to go with Vesey in that spot for at least the short term — No. 26 played 17 games last season with Kreider and Zibanejad — while perusing the trade market.

“I thought Jimmy did a good job,” Laviolette said. “He played really well up there.”

If Vesey does move up, the club would have to recall a forward to take the vacated spot on the checking line beside Adam Edstrom and Barclay Goodrow. Does the name, Tyler Pitlick, ring a bell? Could Matt Rempe get a look?

But the Blueshirts also might consider recalling Brennan Othmann to skate with Zibanejad and Kreider after serendipitously moving No. 78 last week to right wing from the left in Hartford.

Jonathan Quick stops Alex Newhook's shot for one of his 31 saves in the Rangers' victory.

Othmann, who had three NHL games in early January when he skated primarily on the left with the Nick Bonino and Jonny Brodzinski, has scored three goals in his last four games for the Wolf Pack.

There is no reason for the Rangers — who have built an eight-point division lead over Carolina, which has two games in hand — not to look internally before diving into the trade market where both Frank Vatrano and Vladimir Tarasenko are available for an encore.

There is no rush, though. Apparently there is no rush for the Rangers when they take the ice, either, with the team somnambulant far too often out of the gate. The Blueshirts, who trailed 1-0 after a dozy opening 20 minutes, have been blanked in eight of their last 11 first periods while being outscored by an aggregate 10-4.

But when the motor got running in this one, the horses were out of the barn and there was little Montreal and goaltender Sam Montembeault could do about it. The Blueshirts scored four goals within 4:10 late in the second period once Kreider’s first goal of the night tied it at 11:09, 25 seconds after No. 20 had been stoned on a breakaway.

Rangers' Blake Wheeler falls to the ice and suffers a leg injury, forcing him to leave the game early.

Kreider scored on a one-timer from the left circle, Will Cuylle went to the net — again — and scored on a deflection. Zibanejad scored a shorthanded goal on a whistling one-timer from the left dot after the Blueshirts had gotten Jonathan Quick out of the net for an added attacker. Kreider then scored on a power-play deflection that ended an 0-for-18 for a 4-1 lead at 15:19 of the second.

Trocheck scored from long range, Kreider completed the hat trick by putting in a gimme on a feed from Zibanejad at 7:59 of the third and Kakko wrapped it up at 9:56 for the Blueshirts’ seventh goal within 18:47.

There was a mountain of messiness in the third period with the game having broken bad for the Canadiens, who simply could not contain Kreider and Zibanejad in probably the tandem’s most impactful five-on-five game in months, if not for the season.

Rangers fans throw hats on the ice after Chris Kreider's completed a hat trick in the second period of the Rangers' win.

“He was at the right place at the right time,” Zibanejad said of Kreider, who was not available in the postgame locker room a day after having missed practice for a personal reason. “I thought we had good scoring chances.

“He’s a goal scorer so that’s what he does.”

Kreider, who has a total of 27 goals, has scored seven in his last 10 games. But in this one, both Kreider and Zibanejad generated offense. They got to the inside. They played with purpose and with speed.

They were the dynamic duo.

And between now and March 8, Drury will be adding a third.

You can now design your own trucker hat at The Appalachian Honey Boutique

KINGSPORT, Tenn--Appalachian Honey Boutique owners have created a new custom hat experience.

Their new trucker hat bar, located in the Fort Henry Mall, allows guests to pick a trucker hat, and then customize it with different patches, chains, pins, and more. They then skillfully press your chosen patches onto the hat.

Owner Jessica Stiltner said the response from the community has been great so far.

"Luckily its been Spring break so we've had a lot of kids and families in," she said. "You get to build your own hat, use your own creativity, have a great time, and see your creation on your head."

You can design your own hat, bring a group of friends, or even book a trucker hat party.

"We noticed that other boutiques in bigger cities like Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville are starting to do this, so we thought lets bring it to the Tri-Cities and be one of the first ones to do it."

The Appalachian Honey Boutique is located in the mall across from Auntie Anne's pretzels. They are open Monday-Saturday from 11:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. and Sunday 1:00p.m. to 6:00p.m.

If you'd like to book a trucker hat party, you can call the store at (423) 651-7065.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

She wore an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow striped bikini.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are both enjoying some time off from work together , and were spotted soaking up the sun in the Bahamas on Thursday.

The “Karma” singer, 34, who is on a brief break from her Eras Tour, enjoyed a PDA-packed dip in the surf and a stroll on the sand alongside her boyfriend while wearing a Montce bikini top ($143) and bottom ($94) in the brand’s Canary Stripe colorway — which is currently available for preorder.

“Couldn’t be more excited to wake up this morning to see Taylor in Montce. She looks amazing in the bikini,” the brand’s owner and designer, Alexandra Grief, tells Page Six Style.

“She’s wearing our go-to Lulu bottom — a super versatile and flattering bottom that can be worn high on the leg for maximum flattery — and the Lucy top, a great-fitting underwire style for all sizes that features an adjustable tie-up detail in the front that can be used to add more support, or just for the cute bow.”

Montce’s suits have also been spotted on Sydney Sweeney, Shay Mitchell and Olivia Culpo, the latter of whom just debuted a collaboration with the brand .

And should yellow not be your color preference, Swift’s top and bottom are available in several other colors and patterns.

Kelce, 34, also opted for printed swimwear while splashing around in the clear blue Bahamian water, sporting blue shibori-inspired tie-dye trunks.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is certainly due for a relaxing vacation after winning the 2024 Super Bowl last month — and traveling around the world to watch his girlfriend perform in both Australia and Singapore .

The couple weren’t shy about showing off their love on the shore; the pair were snapped holding hands in the water, walking arm in arm and kissing on the beach while enjoying some beverages.

They dried off with yellow towels and laid out in the sun next to each other on a seemingly private beach.

Kelce recently fueled engagement rumors — and even hinted at wanting a baby — on his podcast, “New Heights,” earlier this week.

He joked with brother Jason Kelce about lab-grown diamonds and lab-grown humans, although the Philadelphia Eagles quickly dismissed his statements as “fueling conspiracy theorists.”

Travis and Taylor’s vacation follows their quick trip to Los Angeles to attend Madonna’s high-security Oscars party , and precedes Swift’s return to the stage in May and Kelce’s summer training camp sessions in July.

Seems both will be returning to work with a tan.
