Vietnam holidays promise an experience of epic beauty and unique heritage. Stretching from the rice terraces and lofty peaks of Sapa in the north, down to the rich soils and swaying palms of the Mekong Delta in the south, Vietnam is one of Asia’s most enchanting destinations.

Vietnam’s culture is a real melting pot of influences, but all the more fascinating for it. Under the influence of China for a millennium and part of French Indochina for 70 years, this is a country where about half of the population earn their living from agriculture. As you can imagine, the Vietnamese people’s way of life, beliefs and values are very different from our own – ancestor veneration is a part of everyday life and plenty of people still wear traditional dress.

Vietnam’s landscapes are wonderfully diverse, stretching from the mountains and rice terraces of the northern highlands, to the magnificence of Halong Bay’s karst towers, to the rich, lush greenery of the Mekong Delta. One of the most wonderful things about all this beauty is how easy it is to access on a holiday in Vietnam – an overnight train from Hanoi up to the spectacular views of Sapa, a couple of hours by road from Saigon into the heart of the Mekong Delta .

Vietnam’s cuisine is not only one of the world’s healthiest, but also one of the most delicious and the is sure to be a highlight of your Vietnam holiday! Full of distinctive flavours, created by perfectly balancing salty, sweet, sour and hot, it is the use of plentiful fresh ingredients, herbs and spices that make it so good. Whether you are eating in a high end restaurant, or find a mouth-watering snack on one of the plentiful Vietnamese street stalls, your food will be prepared and cooked to order – be it summer rolls, pho or a banh mi.

  • Best Time To Visit

Discover unspoilt beaches, striking natural landscapes and a blend of historic and hectic city spaces on our tailor-made holidays in Vietnam.

When it comes to sheer variety, Vietnam is in a class of its own. One day you could be in the buzzing streets of Hanoi, where the smell of coffee mingles with the heady aromas from a thousand street-food carts; the next, drifting on a colourful junk through the dreamlike limestone landscape of Halong Bay open-mouthed at the drama of it all. Other natural delights include an array of powder-soft beaches, at their brochure-worthy best in and around Nha Trang, Danang, Mui Ne and Phu Quoc, to mention just a few, and the jungle-blanketed mountains of the north beyond Sapa, home to some of the nation’s ethnic-minority hill tribes.

This scenic splendour is more than matched by the reminders of a gripping history. You can step back in time to the age of the Champa kingdom at its atmospheric ruined capital, My Son; wander the ancient lantern-lit streets of another UNESCO-listed site, Hoi An, where Chinese and Japanese merchants once came to trade; or float along the Perfume River in Hué to admire imperial palaces, pagodas and tombs. Meanwhile, the darker side of 20th-century events is movingly, and unflinchingly, marked at Ho Chi Minh City’s War Remnants Museum and the claustrophobic Cu Chi tunnels where the Viet Cong soldiers hid out.

As for the country’s intangible cultural heritage, you’ll encounter it in everything from the food to the traditional handicrafts. You could spend hours in colourful markets or Hanoi’s characterful Old Quarter browsing for silks, silver jewellery and embroideries, pausing to try out local specialities from French-inspired banh mi sandwiches to scented noodle soups flavoured with lemongrass.

We know Vietnam really well – we introduced the first holiday charter flight to the Far East in 1970, and our Personal Travel Experts have been there. Get in touch to start planning your Vietnam adventure.

The tour starts off at the Minh Mang Tomb, the tranquil final resting place of a 19th-Century Nguyen Dynasty leader. The highlight of the day is the visit to the sprawling walled Citadel and the Imperial City, the former capital of Vietnam. Saigon Your Way (Private Driver & Guide)

There are few more relaxing and rewarding ways of spending a day exploring Saigon, aka Ho Chi Minh City, than in your own car, complete with a driver and guide. It gives you the freedom to set your own itinerary and then change your mind if you spot something enticing along the way. There’s no timetable to stick to, so you can stop for a break when you want and stay for as long as you like - something that families will particularly appreciate. Want to mix up the guide-book highlights with places only the locals know about? Your guide will be happy to suggest options tailored to your interests, whether that’s a quirky shopping centre in what used to be a block of flats, a newly opened trendy café or just an overlooked corner of one of the city’s main sights.

Good to know Entrance fees are not included. Mileage up to 100km is included; you can pay a small supplement directly to the driver for any extra distance or time.

Hidden Saigon By Vespa

If you’ve always wanted to experience Saigon like a local, this fun-filled morning tour by vintage Vespa scooter is for you. Riding behind an experienced driver who knows the streets like the back of their hand, you’ll be whisked around a beguiling blend of must-see landmarks and off-the-beaten-track gems. You’ll discover a secret weapon bunker dating from the Vietnam War, watch coffee made the traditional way in clay pots at Saigon’s oldest café and be dazzled by the colour and scent of a vibrant flower market. You’ll also explore a historic residential district, stop at breathtaking Buddhist temples and check out specialist markets dedicated to everything from spare parts for motorbikes to fabrics from all around Asia. Lunch at a neighbourhood restaurant that serves authentic Vietnamese cuisine is a perfect way to round off an adventure that’s sure to be a hit with couples and honeymooners.

Good to know This trip is suitable for those over the age of 16 only. Helmets - and raincoats in case of showers - are provided.

Saigon Street Food By Vespa

Plunge into Saigon’s dynamic night-time scene local-style as you zip between some of its buzziest foodie haunts on a vintage Vespa. Riding pillion behind an expert driver, you’ll begin the evening with a tour around several vibrant downtown districts, passing some of the city’s must-see sights. After pausing for a drink and a spot of people-watching at a neighbourhood café, you’ll head for one of Saigon’s best stalls for banh mi, a stubby baguette sandwich with an array of delicious classic fillings. The next stop is a bustling night flower market, ablaze with colour, followed by a taste of traditional rice pancakes and seafood at a popular restaurant. No gourmet experience is complete without something sweet to finish things off, so the final tasting of the evening is Vietnamese che - a sort of dessert soup - which comes in a dizzying range of varieties.

Good to know This trip is suitable for those over the age of 16 only. While every effort will be made to cater for food allergies or special diets, this may not always be possible.

Cu Chi Tunnels Tour

Explore a fascinating side of Vietnamese history in the countryside to the north of Ho Chi Minh City. During the Vietnam War, Viet Cong communist fighters dug a 250km-long network of tunnels here in which they could hide for long periods, store food and weapons, communicate with other resistance groups and more. For this visit, you’ll travel by private transfer straight to Cu Chi, where you’ll learn all about these extraordinary relics of the country’s past. You’ll hear about the challenging conditions in this three-level underground “village” at the time, from the darkness and foul-smelling air to invasions of snakes and scorpions, but also the ingenuity that enabled the creation of subterranean hospitals, kitchens and wells. A short section of tunnel has been widened a little (and cleared of insects), so brave and curious visitors can get an insight into what life was like below ground for themselves. From here, you’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City in time for lunch (not included).

• Daily departures • Operates year round • Private

Good to know The heat and humidity make the narrow tunnels even stuffier than you’d imagine possible, so don’t feel you have to experience them if you’d rather not.

Saigon’s Highlights in a Day

A fantastic way to get to an introductory view of one of Vietnam’s largest cities, or explore if you are short on time, is by taking this private, guided tour. Begin in the historic heart of the city and walk along Dong Khoi Street, a District 1 thoroughfare once known as Rue Catinat which is lined with grand colonial buildings. Then it’s on to see the exterior of the Notre Dame Cathedral, a Romanesque landmark built in the 1800s, the grand Saigon Central Post Office and the Reunification Palace. The focus later in the day is Cholon, Vietnam’s largest Chinatown. Wander along Tran Hung Dao Street and through the clothing market, Soai Kinh Lam, and n to Cha Tam Chuch and Thien Hau Pagoda, the heart of Chinese culture in the city. The last stop of the day is the Ben Thanh Market, a city icon and a great place to bargain for textiles, jewellery and speciality dishes.

• Daily departures from Ho Chi Minh City • Operates year-round • Private experience

Mekong Delta Discovery

Travel south from Ho Chi Minh City, the gateway to the Mekong Delta. Known as the "rice bowl" of Vietnam, the Delta is the most fertile region in the country and the main producer of rice and tropical fruits. Board your boat to begin your discovery of the mighty Mekong River as well as its narrow canals, gaining a real insight into the lives of the local people. Late afternoon you'll return to Ho Chi Minh City.

Halong Bay Cruise from Hanoi

This scenic four-hour day trip through the limestone majestic peaks of one of the seven natural wonders of the world is just the ticket for those unable to indulge in an overnight cruise. As you weave through the towering karst pillars on a traditional junk boat, relax on the sundeck and admire the serene natural beauty of the islands as you tuck into a delicious Vietnamese feast prepared onboard. Hanoi Street Food

It has been said that one of the best ways to immerse yourself into a new culture is through the local food and this evening street food tour through Hanoi won’t disappoint. As you weave through the narrow streets of the Old Quarter packed with locals perched on plastic stools amongst sizzling woks and bubbling pots, you’re sure to leave with a greater understanding of local life and a firm grasp of Hanoi’s favourite dishes. Enjoy a refreshing glass of local ale – you’ll soon discover Vietnam has a thriving craft beer scene – as you people watch at Bia Hoi corner before diving into Ly Quoc Su, the city’s famed food street with your personal guide. Tuck into freshly made Banh Goi, crescent-shaped fried pastries filled with pork, mushrooms, onions and spices with sticky rice and mouth-watering Pho before finishing with dessert from Hanoi’s most famous ice cream parlour.

Good to know While every effort will be made to cater for any specific dietary requirements, please talk to your guide when booking to ensure the tour can be shaped around your needs. Suitable for children six years and over.

Vietnamese Cooking Class in Hanoi supported by the Der Touristik Foundation

What better souvenir than the knowledge of how to recreate your favourite Vietnamese dish. Not only that, when taking this class at KOTO restaurant you’ll be contributing to the fantastic community work they do, helping to provide hospitality training to local street kids. Supported by our own Der Touristik Foundation, founder Jimmy Pham set up KOTO (Know One, Teach One) when he realised all these children needed were the skills to get a stable job – you’ll learn all about their mission in the morning as you sip Vietnamese tea and get acquainted with the team. Having collected all your fresh ingredients from the local market you’ll get to work beside a current trainee learning more about their lives and a recipe that’s sure to stay with you forever before tucking into your culinary creations!

• £10 of each excursion sale goes towards the foundation • Daily departures • Operates year-round • Group experience

Good to know Although the class can cater for children over six, this experience is more suited for adults looking to give something back to the local community.

Vietnamese Pottery Making Class in Hanoi

Located on the banks of the Red River, just outside Hanoi, the ancient Bat Trang Ceramic Village is a must-see for history enthusiasts and those interested in local crafts. Dating back seven centuries, this traditional trades village is also home to some of the best craftsmen in the country, making it the perfect place to learn the art of pottery and create a memorable souvenir. Step inside one of the hundreds of private workshops that line the narrow streets in the village and immerse yourself in the daily life of a local. Equipped with your own rotary table and clay you’ll get to work creating your own masterpiece under the watchful eye of the experts who will be on hand to guide you step by step through the process. After all that hard work, cool down with a refreshing glass of sugar-cane juice and sample a Bánh tẻ - a speciality of Bat Trang made with rice, ground meat and black mushrooms.

Hanoi's Highlights in a Day

This is a fantastic introduction to Vietnam’s capital, packing many of Hanoi’s sights into a day. You’ll begin in the city’s Ho Chi Minh Quarter, the site of the mausoleum of the former revolutionary statesman. Other attractions in this corner of central Hanoi include the Presidential Palace, the lotus blossom influenced One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature. The tour then proceeds to the most well-known neighbourhood: the Old Quarter. With the guide, you’ll wander through the wonderfully busy streets that are lined with a jumble of French colonial buildings. Stop for a traditional egg coffee at the well-thought-of Café Giang, before ending the day at a visit to the Water Puppet Theatre to learn about an entertainment form that’s over 1000 years old.

• Daily departures from Hanoi • Operates year-round • Private experience

Good to know The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed every afternoon and on Mondays and Fridays so a stop to take a picture will be included in the tour on these occasions. The mausoleum is also closed 15 June to the 15 August for the annual renovation.

Hanoi Street Art & Old Quarter Tour

A great way to get to know what life in a city is – or was – like is through street art. On this half day tour of Hanoi’s glorious Old Quarter there’s a focus on murals and mosaics, starting at the famous Phung Hung Street. A handful of local and South Korean artists have created beautiful depictions of urban memories in each of railway arches. The next stop is the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural, a 4-mile-long artwork that was produced in 2021 to celebrate 1000 year since the foundation of Hanoi. The intricate mosaics portray various aspects of Vietnamese history, culture and tradition. The tour will end with a visit to Café Giang for an egg coffee, a Hanoi delicacy.

• Departs daily from Hanoi • Operates year-round • Private experience

Hanoi Old Quarter Cyclo Tour

Spend a few hours being whisked through the streets of Hanoi’s beautiful Old Quarter on a cyclo. The first port of call is Ngoc Son temple, the most visited temple in the city which is located on an island in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. To reach the island, a tiny land of legends, you’ll cross the pretty, scarlet hued Huc Bridge. Then head to Hanoi’s beautiful Opera House before weaving your way through the historic streets of the Old Quarter.

Cruise & Cycle Through Tam Coc

Set off southwards out of Hanoi and head to the Ninh Binh province, a wonderous world of riverside rice fields punctuated with limestone casts that’s known as Halong Bay on land. You’ll board a small boat and be transported slowly along the Ngo Dong River to the Tam Coc cave system. After entering one of the caves in your rowboat, you can enjoy the unhurried trip back to the pier and take in life on the riverside. It’ll then be time for a delicious local lunch and a 3-mile bike ride to Hung Mua, another of the three Tam Coc caves. You’ll then ascend nearly 500 steps to the top of Hang Mua Peak for some unforgettable view across the surrounding landscapes.

Private Island BBQ

Indulge your inner Robinson Crusoe with a day on a deserted island in Nha Trang Bay. It’s the perfect away-from-it-all option, whether you’re looking for a romantic experience with someone special or quality time with the family. You’ll be whisked by speedboat to your destination, where you’ll be able to swim, snorkel and relax on the secluded picture-perfect beach without a care in the world. And when you start to feel a little peckish, your private staff will be a discreet distance away ready to serve a delicious barbecue picnic lunch. When it’s time to leave - though you may not want to - the boat will be there to carry you back to civilisation.

Good to know It’s an obvious thing to say, but you’re on a desert island, so be sure to bring everything you think you can’t live without for the day, from sun cream and hats to child-friendly snacks.

Vietnamese Cooking Class from Nha Trang or Cam Ranh

Spend an enjoyable morning learning how to prepare some popular Vietnamese dishes from scratch with the help of the staff at one of Nha Trang’s best-loved eateries. After meeting up with the chef at Lanterns Restaurant, you’ll hop on a cyclo - a typical three-wheeled bicycle taxi - for a fascinating trip to a local produce market. Here you’ll get a colourful lesson in the ingredients that are key to the country’s culinary culture and how to choose and haggle for the best, pausing for a refreshing sugar-cane juice along the way. On returning to the restaurant, you’ll be taken through the necessary steps to create a three-course meal, starting with fresh spring rolls, perhaps, followed by lemongrass chicken or fish cooked in a clay pot depending on what’s on the menu that day. You’ll also discover the secret of cooking perfect rice and how to flambé fruit for an impressive dessert without setting anything else on fire. The well-deserved finale is, of course, sitting down to eat what you’ve made in the company of your fellow cooks.

• Daily departures • Operates year round • Group departures

Good to know The class is suitable for families with children aged 6 and above. While every effort will be made to cater for food allergies or special diets, this may not always be possible.

Nha Trang Street Food by Cyclo

Experience the city of Nha Trang like never before with a four-hour cyclo ride that takes you to local vendors to indulge in scrumptious street food specialities. Riding on a traditional Vietnamese three-wheel bicycle taxi, you can sit back and relax while your driver takes you on an unforgettable culinary journey. Savour the delicious Banh Can, a hot cake that is skilfully prepared by pouring flour into moulds and baking over a warm coal brazier. Try the Bun Cha Ca, rice vermicelli with grilled fish and a broth made with boiled sailfish and mackerel bones that boasts a unique and flavourful taste. The Nem Nuong, a grilled pork roll, is a must-try dish, with its crispy meat and spicy sweet and sour blend, served with a refreshing green papaya salad. Try the shrimp dumpling, Banh Tai Vac, and end your experience on a sweet note with the Che Choui Nuong, a banana and sticky rice dessert.

• Daily departures from Nha Trang and Cam Ranh • Operates year-round • Private experience

Sunset Dinner Cruise

If you want a special way to celebrate, consider a night cruise on Nha Trang Bay with a delicious Vietnamese seafood dinner and unlimited drinks. On board the Emperor Cruises traditional Junk, enjoy the beautiful scenery of Nha Trang at night while sipping cocktails and wine on the sundeck. Musicians will entertain you before a sumptuous five-course seafood dinner. After dinner, you can return to the deck for a romantic moment or to celebrate with loved ones over drinks and cocktails. This experience is perfect for couples, honeymooners, and anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion.

Remote Island Cruise

The island of Phu Quok is a glorious tropical playground in its own right, blessed with dazzling beaches and lush landscapes. But as you’ll discover on this full-day private cruise, the remote islets off its south coast are even more unspoiled, making them the perfect location to indulge your desert-island fantasies as a couple or family. Boarding your traditional fishing boat at An Thoi harbour, you’ll head out on a scenic journey across the Gulf of Thailand. On arrival at your destination, you’ll spend a wonderfully lazy day swimming in crystal-clear waters, snorkelling across virgin coral reefs in deserted coves and chilling out on pristine talcum-white beaches fringed by jungle. Making it just a tiny bit easier to tear yourself away, you’ll be served a mouthwatering local light lunch on board as you sail back towards Phu Quoc.

Good to know It’s an obvious thing to say, but you’re in the middle of nowhere, so be sure to bring everything you may need for the day, from sun cream and hats to your children’s favourite snacks.

Phu Quoc's Highlights in a Day

During the tour, you’ll get to experience a variety of activities in Phu Quoc. You’ll start by visiting a pearl farm to learn about pearl cultivation and its importance to the island. Next, you will stop at the Sim Wine factory to try a local drink made from Rose Myrtle fruit. You’ll then visit the Ho Quoc Pagoda, a Buddhist temple with sensational views of the Gulf of Thailand. Afterwards, you’ll head to Sao Beach, renowned for its soft sand, palm trees, and turquoise waters. Take a break from the tour to have lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy some free time on the beach. The tour ends with a stop at Phu Quoc Prison, also known as Coconut Tree Prison, constructed by French colonialists and served as a prison for Viet Cong captives during the Vietnam War.

GMT +7 hours

Vietnamese Dong

16½ hours (excluding stopover time)

Vietnam is a multi-religion state with Buddhism as the leading religion.

Where is Vietnam? Vietnam is furthest east on the Indochina Peninsula in South-East Asia, bordered by Cambodia to the south west, Laos to the north west and China to the north. It also borders Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the west while its east coast leads onto the South China Sea, north of Malaysia, north west of Indonesia and west of the Philippines. Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, is up in the north while its largest city, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), is much further down in the south.

Cities Vietnam is a long-time favourite for cultural holidays and a captivating country to explore. You can start in the north in the capital Hanoi with its mix of well-preserved temples, buzzing markets and skyscrapers before heading down south to Ho Chi Minh City, famous for its French colonial history. Visit the old imperial capital of Hué for a fascinating insight into Vietnam down the years. The city is split into north and south by the lovely Perfume River, with most of the hotels, restaurants and cafés in the south. For the perfect stopover, go east to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Hoi An; it’s an ancient riverside city interspersed with Venice-esque canals.

Vietnam beaches Vietnam has also become an increasingly popular beach destination, thanks to a top mix of family-friendly oceanfront resorts and luxurious romantic retreats. Most of the best beaches are in the southern half of the country; Danang, right in the centre, has calm waters which make it an ideal spot for kayaking. Further south you'll find Ninh Van Bay, a superb hideaway only accessible by boat, and Nha Trang – this popular beach resort has 19 offshore islands and is only a 45-minute drive from Cam Ranh. In the Phan Thiet region even further down the coast, Mui Ne was once a fishing village and is now a popular beach resort; it’s excellent for watersports including sailing and kitesurfing.

Getting around Vietnam is surprisingly big, so the quickest way to get from one major destination to another is by plane; regular flights make travelling between the north and south straightforward. Crazy city traffic can be daunting, so renting a car isn’t the norm – you’d be better off paying for a moto-taxi or a cyclo. Make sure you agree on the price beforehand, and don’t be afraid to barter. A boat trip is another great way to get around; sailing along the Perfume River in Hué to see the city’s sites, or a two-night cruise on board the luxurious Au Co ship around the beautiful limestone islands and caves in Halong Bay, are two excellent options.

Diving & snorkelling Marine life in Vietnam is not as extensive as in other South-East Asia destinations such as Thailand or Malaysia but diving and snorkelling here is still fun. Nha Trang on the central coast is home to several snorkelling sites in the South China Sea and is known as the country’s diving capital thanks to its beautiful clear waters. Here you’ll have the chance to see rare species including frogfish and cowfish. Phu Quoc is known for having Vietnam’s finest hard coral growth and you can snorkel at Turtle Island off its north-west coast.

Food & drink Vietnamese cuisine is similar to Chinese, with lots of noodles and rice, plus seafood and fish by the coast. You can instantly see the emphasis on fresh herbs and produce including basil and peppers, used extensively in hotels’ cuisine and also in street food – locals serve tempting dishes including noodle soup pho, the pork noodle dish cao lau in Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City’s bot chien – a mixture of rice flour and egg, cooked then served with papaya, shallots, green onions and pickled chilli sauce.

Shopping Vietnam has some of the most brilliantly hectic markets in South-East Asia, from silk and silver streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter to the must-see Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, open since 1914. Tailor shops will make bespoke garments for you in no time. You'll find handicrafts such as bamboo items, lacquerware, ceramics, silk and jewellery. Antiques are available but can be difficult to take back to the UK due to problems at customs. Be sure to haggle with locals for the best prices, except in state-run stores where prices are fixed.

Our experts have curated a wide range of handpicked Vietnam offers to make your next holiday extra special. Make the most of great-value savings, exclusive upgrades and bespoke touches.

Frequently asked questions, what’s the weather like in vietnam.

As Vietnam sits in both a temperate and a tropical zone, the weather varies and is entirely dependent on region.

  • The north of Vietnam is monsoonal, and experiences its humid, rainy season between April to September, and its cooler, dry season around October to March.
  • Central Vietnam enjoys hot and dry weather from late January to August, with the majority of rainfall occurring between October to November. Depending on where you’re situated in Central Vietnam, the weather can vary greatly on a daily basis.
  • Southern Vietnam has the simplest and most distinct weather patterns of the country, experiencing just two seasons – wet and dry. The wet season tends to last between late May to November, while the dry season begins mid-November to April.

What's the currency of Vietnam?

The official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese dong. The American dollar is accepted in a number of hotels and resorts, but you should expect to pay in dong for the majority of purchases during your stay.

What are some good examples of Vietnamese street food?

  • Available at all hours, you’re bound to stumble across a roadside Pho stand on your travels here, serving up a salty broth of rice noodles, fresh herbs and spices, topped with your choice of chicken or beef.
  • Xoi, often referred to as sticky rice, is a savoury staple of Vietnam, and depending on the location and chef, this dish can be served alongside an almost limitless amount of accompaniments, but usually includes either fried eggs, pork or chicken.
  • Hanoi’s wildly popular and fiery bun bon nam bo dish usually consists of vermicelli noodles, slivers of beef, an assortment of fresh herbs, chili peppers and shallots, with a light drizzling of fish sauce.

Vietnam is home to a wealth of contrasting cultural influences, breath-taking UNESCO World Heritage sites and energetic cities drenched in a tumultuous history. In one moment you’ll be chowing down on flavourful street food amid blaring horns and twinkling city lights, and in the next you’ll be looking out across a tranquil, crimson horizon, with nothing but the sound of gentle waves lapping against your junk boat.

Why you’ll love Vietnam…

Our holidays in Vietnam

Read more about what you can experience on our holidays in Vietnam below.

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and one of Asia’s most atmospheric cities.

Hanoi is a city of contrasts, giving you a wonderful blend of history and modern hustle and bustle, where beautiful colonial buildings and historic temples lie side by side modern buildings.

Sights you can see on a tour of the city include:

  • The Temple of Literature , which is one of the few remaining examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture. Built in the 12th century by students of Confucius, the temple was Vietnam’s first university, where powerful officials were educated in accordance with Confucian teachings.
  • On a small island in Lake Hoan Kiem is the Ngoc Son Temple . You get to the temple by crossing the Huc Bridge, which means “the place touched by the rays of the morning sun”. Here you learn how the lake got its name and about the legend of the emperor, the magic sword and the giant tortoise.
  • The Ho Chi Minh Complex was built in honour of the Republic of Vietnam’s first president, Ho Chi Minh, who lived and worked in Hanoi for most of his life.
  • Thang Long, an imperial citadel and a political power centre for 13 centuries. Today, the Citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Go for a ride in a “cyclo”, a traditional bicycle taxi , through the 36 streets of the old quarter, named after the goods sold there. Several of the streets still follow this tradition, including Bamboo Street and Tin Street.

Boat ride in Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam’s most distinctive areas of natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and definitely on the list of Vietnam’s biggest attractions.

In the 1,500 km² bay, green-clad limestone cliffs protrude from the sea, which varies from deep blue to jade green depending on the season.

The Vietnamese associate the area with legends about dragons. According to the legends, the dragons in the area dropped jewels and jade out of their mouths, which fell into the bay, forming the cliffs we know today.

The colonial town of Hoi An

By the coast in central Vietnam, you will find the beautiful and charming town of Hoi An.

The town was one of the most important ports in this part of South-east Asia from the 17th to the 19th century, and today Hoi An is also one of the best-preserved historical towns in Asia, partly because it escaped the bombing during the Vietnam War.

The most interesting part of the town is the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building style in the area testifies to Japanese, Chinese and Indian influences. Visit the Japanese Covered Bridge, the Chua Ong Pagoda and the 200-year-old Tam Ky house, which was originally built by a Vietnamese family and where you can find Japanese and Chinese influences today.

Ho Chi Minh City and its environs

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest city, often still referred to by its old name, Saigon.

The city is a mix of modern high rise buildings and colonial buildings, and on a tour of the city you will see:

  • The Central Post Office , which was designed by the world-famous French architect Gustav Eiffel, who is probably best known for designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
  • The iconic and beautiful church Notre Dame Cathedral , built between 1863 and 1880 by the French colonists.
  • The War Remnant Museum and the Reunification Palace , where the Vietnam War ended on 30 April 1975.

There are also interesting attractions in the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.

On a half-day excursion from Ho Chi Minh City, you can experience the Cu Chi Tunnels , a labyrinth of tunnels linking underground command centres, schools, accommodation, schools and training facilities, and serving as a staging ground for the Viet Cong’s surgical strikes against the Americans.

On a full day excursion, you can experience the Mekong Delta from a boat. The Mekong Delta is a lush area that covers an area just shy of 40,000 m2, much of which is under water. From its source, the Mekong River runs 4,500 km through six countries to the delta at the coast south of Ho Chi Minh City. On the boat trip, you can visit some of the local craftsmen and producers – at a coconut plantation, for example.

Beach holiday in Vietnam

You have every opportunity to round off your holiday in Vietnam with a few days on the beach.

Vietnam offers several fantastic beach holiday destinations, all of which boast beautiful beaches in enchanting surroundings.

Phan Thiet is a small coastal town in South-east Vietnam, perfect for some cosy, relaxing days

The town is a cosy little fishing village that is actually famous for producing fish sauce for the rest of Vietnam.

To the north-east of the city is the Mui Ne peninsula, which is known for its large, reddish sand dunes. Besides that, you will also find some of Vietnam’s best beaches on the peninsula, where the clear waters lap the golden sand.

At Mui Ne, you will also find restaurants, cafés, bars and markets that you can visit if you need a break from all that relaxation!

Phu Quoc is located off the west coast and is Vietnam’s largest island.

The island offers green forests, palm-lined beaches and crystal-clear waters – a veritable holiday paradise.

If you dream of lazing on the beach, having a dip in the warm water, strolling along the coast and enjoying the amazing sunsets, you’ve come to the right place.

If you need a little more activity, the beautiful coral reef is just waiting to be explored.

Other highlights of Vietnam

Vietnam offers myriad exciting sights and attractions, north and south, including:

  • Vietnamese cuisine . Try one of the many street kitchens or attend cookery school and learn how to make the delicious Vietnamese specialities.
  • Visit Nam Cat Tien National Park , an important area for many Asian animal species. If you are lucky, you might spot some of the timid inhabitants of the park, such as deer, monkeys and birds, or the more rare leopards, elephants and bears.
  • In northern Vietnam, on the border with China, lies Sapa in a lush, mountainous area . Magnificent scenery and stunning views of Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest mountain, await you here. Go for a hike in the scenic area and experience the beautiful rice terraces at close quarters.
  • Vietnam’s picturesque valley, Mai Chau , where you will discover amazing rice fields, limestone mountains and villages with ethnic minorities such as the h’mong, thai and dzao. Discover unspoilt countryside and villages that live according to a traditional way of life.
  • The imperial city of Hue , Vietnam’s ancient capital. Experience the city up close and be taken back to its historic heyday as you walk through the ruins, visit the impressive Imperial Tombs and sail on the Perfume River.

Combine with a tour to Cambodia or Cambodia & Laos

Combine Vietnam with Angkor Wat in Cambodia or with Cambodia and Laos, which together make up the former Indochina

Cambodia offers legendary ruins and a hospitable people.

In Phnom Penh , you will find Cambodia’s largest city and capital, where you can, among other things, gain an insight into the dramatic history of the country at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and at the “Killing Fields”, Choeung Ek, where 17,000 people were murdered and buried in mass graves.

Siem Reap , a town in north-western Cambodia which is the gateway to some of Cambodia’s biggest sights and attractions.

I The town itself offers interesting markets, cookery schools and the Cambodian circus. North of Siem Reap, you can experience the Angkor complex, one of the most important archaeological sites in South-east Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Angkor complex consists of Angkor Thom , the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Angkor Thom dates back to the 12th century, when it was established by King Jayavarman, and in its heyday is said to have been inhabited by between 750,0000 and a million people.

The highlight of the Angkor complex is the Angkor Wat temple complex, Cambodia’s biggest attraction . It was the most splendid of all the temples of the Khmer Empire, and an architectural masterpiece, which is said to have taken 300,000 men and 6,000 elephants 37 years to build. Angkor Wat is an absolute must-see in Cambodia.

Laos is yet another fascinating destination, where you’ll experience a relaxed atmosphere that encapsulates Buddhist culture and traditions.

In the northern part of Laos, you will visit the former royal city of Luang Prabang . A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city consists of a unique blend of traditional architecture and French colonial charm.

Get up early to catch hundreds of monks walking through the city streets to collect alms, visit Wat Xieng Thing, a traditional temple building covered with leaf gold, or climb to the top of Phousi Hill and enjoy a phenomenal view of Luang Prabang.

All pretty good really. A couple of easy points though: Our guide was absolutely terrific but (so blame whatever on him please) we didnt have any chance to look closely into any active religious events, spaces, ceremonies, or temples, an important part of the country's culture. There were several rather too similar visits to ex-palace museums and mausoleums, so I think one or two of these could be substituted by something interesting or ceremonial in different current local religious practices/venues. The 'snorkel event' needs further thought. Nice day out on the boat, sure, but the sea bed in the snorkel site is nothing to write home about and the water isnt too clean. There are health and safety issues too as the vessel was anchored some distance from the snorkel site and the weather was a little breezy and choppy. Given that most of the group I was with were 'senior citizens', I found it odd that there was no safety swimmer standing by and no obvious recovery line/float system.

Inside Vietnam

I went during the Coronavirus outbreak and I have to say Vietnam was on top of it. Mandatory temperature checks, hand sanitizer everywhere you went, masks. The country was beautiful and the people very friendly. Unfortunately due to the virus outbreak the tour was cancelled halfway through and the government was shutting things off to tourists (such as the Mekong Delta and Halong Bay). I'm sure I would have given it an "Excellent" rating if this didn't happen. The week we did get to do was an amazing experience though!

Cycle Vietnam Tour

Cycle Vietnam

This was our first trip with Explore - and indeed our first Group trip. Everything was amazing. The amount of cycling was perfect, rest stops, support teams, photo opportunities, planning.....everything. A group of four people is a little 'intense' however on the whole we navigated the relationships well within the group. One of the highlights for us was Binh himself. He was such an amazing Guide/Tour Leader - words don't really convey how important he was to our enjoyment of the experience. For us, his personal stories made Vietnam's history come alive, and yet he took care to convey many perspectives on the recent history of the country and people. We were able to meet his parents and visit his home which was really a very special moment. Binh is a real asset to Explore. He is articulate, skilled, very caring and respectful - to the people of Vietnam, to the tour participants and support teams, and to the organisation Explore. With development and growth opportunities he could go very far as a mentor and leader in the company and in the tour industry.

I will continue to use Explore as it meets all my requirements now I'm taking a different style of holiday, having been widowed 6 years ago.I feel safe and looked after - the security blanket I once had with my husband. I feel I can continue to explore the world, as before and continue my life.

The perks of solo travel in Vietnam with Intrepid

A local leader guiding her group through the Sapa Valley in Vietnam

A local leader

It can be hard to fully grasp Vietnam’s culture and what makes this country so unique when trying to navigate the scooter-riddled streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City without getting run over. That’s where our local leaders come in. Promising to give you an insight into daily life, our expert guides really know their stuff, whether that’s where to get the best tailor-made clothing in Hoi An, the ancient stories behind the legendary Ha Long Bay or ideas on how to spend your free time.

The chaotic streets of Ho Chi Minh City at nighttime

Your safety is extremely important to us, and while Vietnam is known to be a safe country to visit, our local leaders are always on hand to offer advice, provide info on security tips and tricks and inform you of the do’s and don’t’s of the country’s customs. While the locals are friendly in Vietnam and the crime rate is low, you should still be wary of bag snatchers and pickpockets so make sure you have your belongings where you can see them at all times, especially in busy market areas.

A group of travellers enjoying local food in Vietnam

Ready made friends

Sometimes the best part about travelling is not the sights you see, but the people you meet along the way, and on our small group tours, adventure-keen friends aren’t hard to come by. Whether you’re looking for someone to share a bowl of pho with or you want your picture taken in front of the rising islands in Ha Long Bay, you’ll always be surrounded by people just as excited to explore Vietnam as you are.

A row of local men and their auto rickshaws in Hoi An.

Logistics and convenience

Planning a trip to Vietnam can be overwhelming - there are overnight train timetables, temple customs and flight details to think about. But on our trips, we take care of that for you. From the organising to the logistics, your leader will ensure your tour runs smoothly and safely get you from A to B so all you have to do is turn up (with a fully charged camera) and enjoy the extraordinary landscapes this country offers.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip in vietnam.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

I'm new to group travel, what will my group be like?

Intrepid travellers  are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and a lot of them elect to travel alone (so no third-wheeling, we promise). Our trips attract a mix of genders and ages, generally ranging from 25 to 65. It’s hard to know exactly who you’ll meet, but you can be assured you'll be a part of the fun.

Will I have free time to explore by myself?

While our trips have set itineraries, the amount of free time you'll have depends on the  travel style . If you're joining a group trip to Vietnam, chances are you'll have designated time to do your own exploring if you'd like, and your guide will be able to provide tips and recommendations before you head out on your own.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your leader will record your travel insurance details on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Can I use my mobile phone in Vietnam?

You'll be able to use your mobile phone in most urban areas of Vietnam, although remote and mountainous areas may not have network coverage. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your mobile carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your mobile while in Vietnam.

Are Intrepid's Vietnam tours accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Our solo travel safety guide

Share your itinerary.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people travelling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're travelling with us, we can help you organise an arrival transfer. Read your maps  before  you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewellery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.

Fare's fair

Solo travellers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate  before  you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

I am currently considering a trip next March and am interested in an escorted tour preferably for singles. I'm widowed, so would like company and I definitely want a small group.

I've just returned from an escorted tour with Tui to Costa Rica and wasn't that impressed. I think I was unlucky as the group was large (26) so everything took much longer (loading/unloading luggage, meals etc), and I was often allocated rooms away from the rest of the group.

Anyway looking for recommendations for other companies. I'm looking for a fortnight possibly including Cambodia

My suggestion is that you don't.

And there are people here who can help.

Here, start reading -

https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g293921-i8432-k14369954-Solo_female_trip_report_rather_long-Vietnam.html

Thanks. I really wish I was brave enough to do something like that, but I know I'm not.

You could see if Trailfinders do anything (UK based company).

Thanks. There are quite a few UK based companies that do trips, I'm just interested in people's experience of them.

Not many, if any, people who go on fully organised tours would be on here.

Try a few UK based review sites, eg Trustpilot People love to complain.

We are returning to Vietnam next year on our own as there is so much more we want to see and experience!!

I'm going to Vietnam next week but with my partner and doing it independently but I would definitely recommend looking at Explore and Exodus for solo trips.

You can also join a small group tour in each location you visit (Your hotel will arrange it for you).

DIY is easy!

While not a UK company, I've found Intrepid (Australian) to be good. I did a trip to Vietnam with them last year which was really good. They tend to have a mix of Australians, Brits and Americans. I've found their trips tend to have more solos than couples, and average age is probably 40-50. Their maximum group size is 12 usually.
