Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Amenities include multiple pools and shops, as well as a cinema, a live performance theater, a jazz lounge, a spa, a fitness center and a salon. Plus, you can attend a lecture or discussion with the onboard historian, who helps educate passengers on the cultural aspects of each destination. An onboard cooking school, The Kitchen Table, also allows guests to learn about each destination's unique cuisine.

Cruisers can enjoy daily updated food options at The Restaurant, diverse cuisine at the World Café, expertly paired tasting menus at The Chef's Table and Italian favorites at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. There are eight dining venues on board in total, in addition to the ship's cooking school at The Kitchen Table and 24/7 room service.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

Following a delicious meal, travelers will have access to a wealth of amenities, including the spa, a pool, several whirlpools, lounges and a fitness center. When evening rolls around, cruisers can press their luck at the casino or catch a live show.

As with other Silversea ships, Silver Moon boasts all-suite accommodations, ranging in size from 334 to 1,970 square feet. Each suite boasts butler service, marble bathrooms, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, minibars and large windows. Plus, you'll get a welcome bottle of Champagne. Viking Orion

The 930-passenger Viking Orion set sail in 2018. All staterooms on the Viking Orion are equipped with balconies, flat-screen LCD TVs and minibars. Cabins also feature bathrooms with glass-enclosed showers and heated floors.

When it's time to relax, cruisers can head to the spa for a treatment or – for a unique experience – cool their body temperatures down in the snow grotto (where snowflakes fall) before jumping into the sauna or hot tub to warm up. Recent travelers said this spa experience is not to be missed.

The ship is also home to a fitness center, a living room that hosts live entertainment, a library, shops, a salon and two movie theaters. The main pool area is expansive, featuring ample lounge seating, a retractable roof and a poolside bar. At night, the ship screens poolside movies under the stars.

Viking Orion's guests can enjoy meals at several onboard restaurants, including the main restaurant where menus rotate daily. Or, guests can book a private dining room for intimate gatherings. Recent cruisers raved about the service and food quality across the ship. Come nighttime, the ship's theater offers live performances ranging from themed shows to history and art lectures.

Viking Orion sails to Australia and New Zealand, Asia and Alaska.

U.S. News Insider Tip: One of the most relaxing spaces on Viking Orion (and all of Viking’s ocean ships) is the glass-enclosed Wintergarden, which is located next to the pool area. Afternoon tea is served every day, and it’s not to be missed at least one time during your cruise. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

Seabourn Quest

Seabourn Quest, which launched in June 2011, is one of the smallest ships in Seabourn's fleet. It can fit up to 458 passengers and about one crew member for every cruiser. It is virtually identical to the Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey .

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. And for evening entertainment, you'll have access to a variety of bars, plus a casino, a dance club and the Grand Salon, where cabaret performances, comedy shows and more are hosted nightly.

Quest sails to and from destinations around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe and more.

The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.

Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.

If you’re looking for some family fun before embarking on a cruise from Sydney, head to  Luna Park, a restored amusement park that dates back to the 1930s. Both kids and adults will love going on exhilarating rides, taking a leisurely spin on the Ferris wheel, and gliding down giant slides. During your visit, you’ll also find carnival-style foods and games.

Where c an I eat in Sydney?

Foodies will love Sydney’s international food scene. From ritzy waterfront restaurants to laid-back eateries along one of Sydney’s “eat streets,” the city has it all. For an after-dinner drink, it’s hard to beat a cocktail in one of the sky bars located atop its many skyscrapers. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal in a setting like nowhere else, head to Sixpenny or Bennelong, an elegant restaurant located inside the Sydney Opera House.

What’s the culture and history of Sydney?

Sydney Harbour was originally the home of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. With the arrival of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788, the city of Sydney (named after Lord Sydney, the British Home Secretary at the time) was established as a penal colony of Great Britain. By 1840, the transportation of convicts to the city had ceased. A decade later, the population of the city grew exponentially after a local gold rush.

Up until 1900, Sydney was the capital of New South Wales, a British colony. But after the Commonwealth of Australia was established in 1901, Sydney became the capital of the state of New South Wales, which joined the Australian Federation. The wild and harsh start of colonial Sydney is now long in the past. Today, you’ll find a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with one of the most diverse populations in the world.

Where can I go shopping near the Sydney cruise port?

You will find an assortment of shopping malls near the Sydney cruise port. Some of the largest are Westfield Sydney, The Galeries, and World Square. For local boutiques, head to the intersection of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. In the neighborhood of Paddington, you’ll find shops with cutting-edge fashion from new designers. For souvenirs and art, head to The Rocks near the Sydney Opera House, or the Strand for Australian hats and boots.

How can I get around Sydney?

Sydney has a variety of public transportation options. Its extensive bus route system goes to many of the most popular tourist sites, plus there are a light rail and ferry service. In addition, the Sydney Metro provides fast, frequent service around the city. As for taxis, you’ll find them waiting right outside the Sydney cruise terminal, as well as in taxi ranks all around the city.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

Australia’s official currency is the Australian dollar. The paper bills come in increments of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Credit cards are widely accepted, but traveler’s checks are not. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, but is appreciated. If you do tip, a smaller amount around 10% is usually acceptable.

Best cruises from Sydney

Cruises are popular in Australia and most of them depart from Sydney Port.

The best part about cruising from Sydney is the stunning view as you are treated to as you depart from Sydney’s iconic harbor.

Sydney has numerous cruise lines offering attractive cruises packages, and delightful weather almost the whole year round.

In fact, cruises leaving from Sydney are so popular that they have given the region’s tourism a lift.

Popular destinations from Sydney

There are all kinds of cruises that leave the shores of Sydney.

Cruises that sail from Sydney can help you visit the nearby beautiful islands of the South Pacific, or take in the beauty of New Zealand.

Sydney cruises also go the distance, what with long expeditions to destinations such as Hawaii, parts of Asia, Venice etc.

If you are short on time, you can also cruise to the east-coast of Australia.

Sydney Cruising Seasons

Cruises depart Sydney shore all year around.

While larger ship and Barrier Reef cruises are available year round, the Specialty cruises are seasonal.

Short Tasmanian cruises with a stopover at Hobart operate in the Southern summer months of November to March.

The top end cruises sail out of Sydney mostly during the months April to October. This is also known as the ‘wave season.’

This is the time when the Aussies spend their cruise budgets on the best choice of departures, vessels, and itineraries.

If you want to save money on your Sydney cruise, we recommend the low/shoulder season between June to August.

These are Australia’s winter months and are perfect for finding cheap cruise deals.

Sydney is also a great holiday destination so we suggest you spend a few days in the city before boarding your cruise.

Cruise terminals in Sydney Port

Sydney Harbour is Australia’s premier cruise take off spot and destination as well.

Sydney Port has two dedicated cruise-passenger terminals, both of which are bang in the middle of the city.

Be aware of the terminal from where your cruise departs, to avoid later disappointment.

1. Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay

Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal on Circular Quay is also known as OPT. This is the prime terminal for cruise ships docking at Sydney.

Entry to Overseas Passenger Terminal is located off George Street onto Argyle Street, Circular Quay. Get Directions

While a cruise vessel is in port, passenger pick up and drop happens in the terminal area.

The best way to reach the terminal is by train – Circular Quay train station is two minutes’ walk from the terminal.

If you are flying down to Sydney, a 30 minutes’ drive from the Airport can get you to OPT.

Only traveling passengers with valid tickets will be allowed inside the terminal.

2. White Bay Cruise Terminal

White Bay Cruise Terminal is Sydney’s newest port terminal. To reach this terminal, you must first reach James Craig Road in Rozelle. Get Directions

The best way to reach the terminal is by a private drop, taxi or a cruise line transfer.

Again, only passengers with tickets are allowed inside the terminal.

Which cruise line? The dummy's guide to choosing a cruise

Quentin Long

Managing Director

04 March 2024

Time

Are you ready to deep dive into the world of cruising? As part of our ongoing ‘ Everything you need to know about cruising ‘ series we’ve created a guide to the different cruise line companies.

The Australian appetite for cruising is insatiable. The market has reportedly grown by 15–20 per cent every year for the last six years and then a slimmer five per cent last year.

Australian Traveller has the beginner’s guide to cruise ship companies.

Each one is different and appeals to a different holiday need – hence we are fond of telling anyone who will listen that there is a cruise for everyone.

We have used a hotel star-like rating system for convenience; there are no official ratings, so these are our ratings only.

Further, each ship has several cabin classes which explain the range in star ratings.

We have ordered the cruise lines from least stars to most.

More from ‘Everything you need to know about cruising’ : Cruise vs Resort: the pros and cons of the different holidays Everything a first-time cruiser needs to know Every question you ever had about cruising answered The best way to book your first ever cruise

P&O – 2.5 to 3.5 stars

The entry-level cruise ship liner has had its ups and down in the Australian market. It is an incredibly cheap holiday and suitable for families.

It has three liners in the Australian market full-time, with a range of entertainment on board including a flying fox, rock climbing wall and a walk-the-plank experience.

Pacific Explorer will set sail across Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Vanuatu.

The included food is not going to win any gourmet awards however celeb chef Luke Mangan has teamed up with P&O to create the specialty restaurant (so an extra fee to eat there) Salt Grill onboard Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter , as well as a five-course ‘Taste of Salt’ degustation meal paired with matching Australian wines at the Chef’s Table on Pacific Explorer .

Carnival is firmly geared towards the family market, with kid-friendly additions like water slides and Seuss at Sea – which involves character parades and breakfasts, storytime, arts and crafts and more themed around the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss. However, Carnival doesn’t offer the same extent of family activities as its competitors like Royal Caribbean do.

Princess is a firm favourite with the couples’ market and has made a name for itself in the traditional cruise market. In reality it is the cruise brand that brought cruise to the whole world via the 1970’s hit show The Love Boat .

Princess has evolved dramatically since then claiming several innovations in the industry including the first to popularise balconies for most cabins and the first adults-only precinct on a ship in 2006.

Onboard the there are theatre shows, crooners, music, dancing and plethora of game and quiz shows.

And of course, dining. Many Princess lovers (and there are a lot in Australia) will rave about the food with great affection for Crown Grill, the on board specialty steakhouse.

The launch of Sun Princess in Europe is one of the most anticipated new ship launches of 2024.

Hapag-Lloyd – 3.5 to 4 stars

Not a cruise line that easily comes to mind for most Australians, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has quickly become a leading premium cruise line in German-speaking countries. The cruises are bilingual with all activities carried out in both English and German. Some cruises (such as the sailing between Sydney and Manila, for example) are conducted in German only, although staff are fluent in English.

MS Europa features a pool deck on top.

Serving up two ocean liners and three expedition ships, expect a dedication to theming (everything from golf cruising – a golf pro is on every voyage – to gourmet and music cruises) and a focus on lectures and adventure activities (the fact that you can hire bicycles on board tells you just about everything you need to know).

Kids, too, are welcome. While the ships (smaller in size with 400 – 500 guests maximum) aren’t all about arcades and splash parks, kids’ clubs and programming is provided.

Royal Caribbean International – 3 to 4.5 stars

This is the cruise line that brought you rock climbing walls, wave pools, ice skating rinks, dodgem cars, a circus school, roller skating rink and cocktails served by robots.

Royal Caribbean has the widest appeal in the market as there really is something for people of all ages on the menu aboard these mega-ships. The cruise line also sails to over 300 destinations worldwide.

an aerial view of Ovation of the Seas at night

The Ovation of the Seas by Royal Caribbean comes alive at night.

The great all-rounder, Royal Caribbean is a firm favourite for families and couples. Known for its high-energy holidays and activities, first-time cruisers are often surprised at how easy it is to also find some peace and quiet in lounges scattered across the ship.

Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise brand in Australia, with four ships including the biggest ship to sail in Australian waters – Ovation of the Seas.

Quantum of the Seas will be sailing from its new homeport of Brisbane, with Ovation of the Seas and Brilliance of the Seas sailing from Sydney. All offer an astounding array of activities that you don’t normally associate with cruising, plus there are the dining options: 18 restaurants, including Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italian are on board one of Australian Traveller‘s favourite ships, Ovation of the Seas .

Norwegian Cruise Line – 3.5 to 4.5 stars

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) made a splash in 2018 when the refurbished Norwegian Jewel marked the return of NCL to Australian waters.

an aerial view of the Norwegian Spirit across Sydney Harbour

Norwegian Spirit embarks on a new journey at Sydney Harbour.

NCL positions itself as a more upmarket family experience with products like the Haven – a resort-style sanctuary at the top of the ship whose suites and villas give guests exclusive spa access, a 24-hour butler service, private dining, private pools and relaxation areas.

Chill out at the Norwegian Prima Haven balcony.

But to keep the kids entertained the options are limited compared to the likes of Royal Caribbean and Carnival (until it brings one of its ships equipped with go-kart tracks into Australian waters, perhaps).

NCL can be a great option for both multi-generational groups (stay in the three-bedroom Garden Villa that sleeps eight) and singles (with its tough-to-book-because-they-are-in-high-demand studio staterooms for one).

Pull up a chair and treat yourself to a fine dining experience aboard the Norwegian Spirit.

As you would expect, food and drink are in abundance with 16 dining options, 15 bars and nightclubs.

Where NCL traditionally excels, the entertainment does mean that it can be a firm couple’s favourite.

Coral Expeditions – 4 to 5 stars

For something a little different, Coral Expeditions is an expert in small-ship cruising in Australia.

The Coral Geographer was added to its fleet in March 2021, a purpose-built vessel created to access some of the most remote corners of the globe.

an aerial view of the Coral Geographer cruise ship, Australia

Coral Geographer proudly sails in the Kimberley region.

The newest ship carries 120 passengers and has been specially designed for extended expedition cruising, with Xplorer expedition tenders ensuring ease of access for shore excursions.

Coral Expeditions has built its reputation with expedition cruising to the Great Barrier Reef, the Kimberley, Tasmania, Cape York and Arnhem Land, Papua New Guinea, Spice Islands, Raja Ampat and the South Pacific.

True North – 4 to 5 stars

An expedition cruise small enough to be able to cater for personal preferences when it comes to shore excursions? Whether you’re interested in collecting oysters, bird watching or photography, the True North team will make it happen.

an aerial view of the True North cruise sailing across the crystal blue waters

Marvel across the undulating blues with True North.

Featuring two vessels within the fleet ( True North with a maximum capacity of 36 guests and True North II with just 22 guests), True North is all about making each day action-packed with no sea days, and an onboard helicopter to help guests investigate every corner of our finest regions.

an indigenous group performing in front of guests

Complete your cruise experience with cultural immersion.

Onboard, expect elegant simplicity; there’s a dining salon, sundeck, outdoor bar and sports bar, while fares include all adventure boat excursions and activities, dining and non-alcoholic drinks, fishing and snorkelling equipment, and cylinders and weight belts (on dive trips).

Both vessels will complete a wide range of itineraries around the Kimberley throughout 2023 and 2024, plus a variety of other voyages around our coastline, including Sydney Rocks.

Holland America – 4 to 5 stars

Holland America Line is the traditionalist’s favourite cruise line. Think chesterfields, promenades, chamber music and Broadway musicals with a plethora of restaurants.

an aerial view of MS Noordam cruise ship at sea

MS Noordam is Holland America Line’s Vista Class.

Sailing throughout 2023/2024, Holland America’s Noordam features wonderful art and cooking classes, plus a range of longer itineraries (10 to 25 days) that make the most of New Zealand’s coastline, as well as South Pacific crossings to Honolulu and Vancouver.

And if you’re wondering about the name, Holland America Line dates back to 1873 when the Rotterdam sailed from Holland to New York (then known as New Amsterdam). The cruise line is now based in the US but retains its Dutch connections through its ship names.

Azamara Club Cruises – 4.5 to 5 stars

Azamara Club Cruises is an up-market boutique cruise line operating four ships with a passenger capacity which averages 690 per vessel. Perhaps the most affordable of the five-star class of ships, Azamara is luxury without ostentation.

Azamara Cruises making a stop over at Corsice

Stroll along the panoramic town of Corsica with Azamara Cruises.

The mid-size ships feel like boutique hotels, with a friendly, relaxed service that makes guests feel at home.

This is pitched firmly at couples, who want to take things slow and relaxed with a high level of service and refinement. The onboard entertainment is a cabaret with a little bit of Broadway and opera thrown in.

Take a refreshing dip at the Quest Deck pool.

But the real focus for Azamara Club Cruises is destination immersion as opposed to fly-by, 10-hours-only-in-port visits. The ships will usually stay longer in destinations, so guests can go out late or even stay overnight in port.

an aerial view of the Azamara Quest cruise ship, Australia

Azamara Quest is an impressive luxury cruise.

Azamara ships you might see in Australia: Azamara Journey, Azamara Quest, Azamara Pursuit and Azamara Onward

Oceania Cruises – 4.5 to 5 stars

Another offering in the luxury small-scale ships stakes, Oceania Cruises sails Regatta between Sydney and Auckland and you can grab a great value repositioning cruise to Tahiti.

Regatta was overhauled with a new look that’s all about sharp and classic elegance, with soft colours and splashes of bling. The entertainment is a mix of Rat Pack and 1920s exuberance with spa services from Canyon Ranch. There are no additional dining charges as all specialty restaurants are included, but alcoholic beverages are not.

Oceania ships you might see in Australia: Regatta, Insignia, and Nautica

Cunard – 4.5 to 5+ stars

Whilst the Queens have captured the imagination of Australians for what feels like centuries, the Cunard experience is not necessarily as ‘port out, starboard home’ (legend has it this is the origin of the word posh – on transatlantic sailings you wanted to be on the side least affected by Arctic breezes) as one would expect.

an aerial view of Queen Victoria cruise ship at sea

The sophisticated cruise ship is named after Queen Victoria.

This is not a bad thing – it’s just sometimes surprising for the uninitiated. Certainly, in the Grill Class cabins one is treated to the quintessentially British aristocratic service, one would expect in the rarefied air of the upper decks. However, once we descend the decks we find a pleasant and approachable cruise experience.

an overhead shot of the pavilion pool at Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, Australia

Hang at the pavilion pool.

Yes, this is traditional cruising, think Titanic sans iceberg, with ballroom dancing and gentleman hosts to accompany any poor dame who happens to have a husband with a bad hip and dicky knee.

an aerial view of Queen Mary 2 cruise ship, Australia

Queen Mary 2 is the last British ocean liner still in service.

The scale affords Cunard the luxury of being able to provide a multitude of activities, from inspiring guest speakers, library and card room activities and film screenings to – for the more energetic who still have all their own joints – fencing, dance classes and Queen Elizabeth‘s Games Deck for some jolly good fun outdoors like lawn bowls or croquet.

There are also the ubiquitous theatrical productions and pub entertainment.

Virgin Voyages – 4.5 to 5 stars

New kid on the block, Virgin Voyages, is set to redefine cruising as we know it, its four 2770-passenger, adults-only ships balancing the luxury of a yacht with the diverse features and attractions of a large ship. Doing away with buffets and pre-set dining times, guests can expect made-to-order food from over 20 unique eateries, enjoy innovative creative productions and chill out in uber-cool spaces (including suites featuring terrace hammocks).

Swan Hellenic – 5 stars

More than 70 years after its pioneering cruise, this Scandinavian expedition company is back to cruising to the most remote reaches of our planet – a hero of smaller and lesser-known ports of cultural, geographical or wildlife interest.

an elegant suite with ocean views

Elegant suites open up to relaxing ocean views.

While the focus is on cultural programming, citizen science and unforgettable excursions, this is as far from basic expedition as you can get. Fares include return regional airfares to the port of embarkation and/or disembarkation, one-night pre-cruise accommodation, all meals and beverages (some alcoholic), all gratuities, one shore excursion per port of call and more.

a jacuzzi on a cruise ship, Australia

Soothe your muscles in the jacuzzi.

Combining the latest in polar ice technology with sophisticated interiors (think Scandi-luxe boutique hotel with a focus on offering guests unobstructed views), Swan Hellenic has three vessels within its fleet, the SH Minerva centering primarily on the Pacific with a swathe of Kimberley voyages slated for the upcoming season.

Celebrity Cruises – 5 stars

Celebrity Solstice has had eight seasons in the Aussie sun and is a favourite with many cruisers for its upmarket elegance yet laid-back vibes. Many first-time cruisers fall in love with cruising when they sail with Celebrity. It’s a slick island resort with an engine.

Celebrity has plenty of special surprises on board, including the Canyon Ranch SpaClub – one of the biggest spas afloat, and the Lawn Club, which boasts real grass with new luxury alcoves. It’s just perfect to sit on while watching the world slide by or indulging in a sunset drink and game of bocce. Nothing beats slipping the shoes off and feeling luscious soft turf under your toes.

Calm your senses inside the ever colourful Rainfall Water Therapy Room.

The Lawn also now has an outdoor screen for open-air movies under the stars and perhaps one of the quirkiest attractions at sea – the Corning Museum of Glass conducts strangely mesmerising glass-blowing demonstrations and classes at sea.

Oenophiles (if you don’t understand that, don’t worry you aren’t one) will love the wine-blending masterclass on board with Blendtique and a super-indulgent-wine-snob extravaganza of Riedel crystal glass comparison experience. But if gin or whiskey or even a Bundy is more your thing, a mixology class may be for you. Booze is well and truly an experience on Celebrity.

Dine sumptuous meals at the Celebrity Edge Eden Restaurant.

While this all sounds very adult and Celebrity is a favourite for couples, there is a significant amount of energy put into family activities too. Camp at Sea, as Celebrity calls its youth program, is divided into four categories: Art, Recreation, Culinary and S.T.E.M (Science Technology Engineering, and Math). Celebrity is the only cruise line we have heard of where a number of shore excursions are specifically designed for families.

Windstar Cruises – 5 stars

Exclusivity is the name of the games with Windstar Cruises, a fleet of six yachts (both power yacht and sailing yacht), which each carry only 148 to 342 guests to more than 150 ports around the world. Not only does this mean no lines or waiting, but the relatively small size of these yachts also mean you can sail right into the tiniest of hidden coves, up to the heart of Old World villages and into little-known harbours off limits to larger ships.

an aerial view of the Wind Class and Star Plus Class yachts

Windstar Cruises feature two unique yacht styles.

Focused on offering guests relaxed luxury (no formal dress and no cover charge for specialty dining), each fare includes open dining, all non-alcoholic beverages, L’Occitane bathroom amenities, beautifully appointed ocean-view staterooms and suites, fresh flowers and fruit in all staterooms and suites, use of watersports equipment and more. You can even opt for private shore excursions and design your own unique tour.

Viking – 5+ stars

It’s a confident cruise line that leads with what it doesn’t offer, eschewing the commonplace urge to be all things to all people. In this case? Expect a firm ‘no kids under 18, no casinos, no umbrella drinks, no pushy photography’ atmosphere. In its place, an elegant mostly inclusive experience for an educated, predominantly older crowd keen to revenge travel the bejesus out of the globe now that the kids have left home. It’s no coincidence that they’ve coined themselves the ‘Thinking person’s cruise’.

Lounge by the main pool promenade.

Featuring nine 930-passenger ocean liners with a focus on extended stays in port (the cruise line has a heavy presence in Scandinavia and the Mediterranean in particular), a Viking cruise is all cultural enrichment, with onboard lectures, experts and guided tours in every port included within the fare.

an infinity pool with lounge chairs facing the sea

The infinity pool extends to the sea.

While the focus tends to be on the destinations, the ships themselves aren’t without their own brand of refined magic. Featuring a serene Scandinavian aesthetic – a nod to their Norwegian heritage, each stateroom features a balcony and a wealth of dining experiences which ranges from cooking classes to a wine-paired multi-course tasting at The Chef’s Table.

There are plenty of pools to choose from.

PONANT – 5+ stars

This French company has been kicking goals by going against the trend of building bigger ships and focusing instead on small-ship expeditions in the luxury sphere. It is a sensory overload of French hospitality and refinement with a sense of expedition adventure as you hop in and out of Zodiacs and retire to luxury in the evening.

Le Lapérouse swanned into Sydney Harbour in all her glory in February 2019. This ship is the second of what will be six Explorer Class vessels, carrying a maximum of 184 passengers in 92 pretty swanky staterooms and suites. The Owner’s Cabin even has its own Jacuzzi.

an aerial view of the Le Laperouse cruise ship in Australia

Le Lapérouse is a sleek luxury vessel sailing across the Kimberley region.

With such small numbers, the focus is on doing less, brilliantly – hence there being only two restaurants and three bars. Not a problem when there is a lot of adventure to be had off the ship on Zodiacs.

One of the highlights of the ship is the Blue Eye lounge, located under the waves with an eye-shaped window that allows guests to see the marine life passing by – a huge plus when on Kimberley cruises.

an underwater multi-sensory lounge called Blue Eye

Le Lapérouse boasts an underwater multi-sensory lounge called Blue Eye.

The lounge also has a hydrophone (a water-based microphone) so you can hear the goings-on of the whales, dolphins and other marine animals (they could pipe it into the spa for relaxation). It is so high tech that you can hear whales from five kilometres away. Other beautiful spaces are the spa and the sauna, along with the Panorama Lounge.

Le Lapérouse will be cruising in our region for two years, including Kimberley, New Zealand, the Pacific and Antarctica.

Silversea – 5+ stars

Silversea has long been at the forefront of ultra-luxury cruising. Silversea hangs its shingle on a butler for each suite and, as if on an Oprah show, everyone gets a suite.

The luxury cruise is enjoying unprecedented growth, adding six new vessels to the fleet between 2021 and 2024.

an aerial view of the Silversea Muse cruise ship, Australia

The Silversea Muse elegantly navigates the buzzing waters of Sydney.

On Silversea Muse, which returns to Australian shores in February 2024, there are eight specialty restaurants on board, some of which have a surcharge, including the only Relais and Chateaux-branded restaurants at sea, the French-inspired La Dame, traditional Italian restaurant La Terrazza, Asian fusion Indochine, Japanese restaurant Kabuki, and Hot Rocks, where guests can cook their own selection of meat, fish and vegetables at their table, on top of 400-°C lava stone.

a contemporary Asian-accented Indochine restaurant

Dine contemporary meals at the Asian-themed Indochine restaurant.

The Zagara Spa offers exquisite pampering at sea, and the all-inclusive cruise options ensure the final bill won’t give you a heart attack.

The Silver Explorer will serve up one-way Kimberley itineraries from Darwin to Broome mid-year, followed by an expedition to Cairns that sails around Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Silversea ships you might see in Australia: Silver Muse, Silver Whisper, Silver Explorer and Silver Shadow

Seabourn – 5+ stars

Another member of the endless Carnival family, this is the super ultra-luxury premium brand similar to the Silversea experience.

Both will have the highest level of passenger-to-staff ratios, include wine with dinner and maybe even lunch and be the equivalent of a luxury lodge on the sea – small passenger numbers, intimate, private and exclusive.

an overhead shot of a woman sitting on the side of the pool at Seabourn cruise ship, Australia

The Seabourn Odyssey pool has an expansive sun deck with cabanas and chaise lounges.

Seabourn ships are spacious and pretty spiffily designed; they are probably the closest to the private club feel that most 4.5 stars and above small ships are going for. To be fair they are all darned good at creating a feeling of intimacy and exclusivity. If Seabourn is operating at 99 per cent, the others range from 90–98 per cent.

the Seabourn Odyssey sailing across Sydney

Seabourn Odyssey will journey from Auckland to Sydney.

Seabourn throws in the whole kitchen sink with complimentary (or inclusive) spirits, wine, beer and welcome Champagne. Its celeb chef of choice is probably the most globally celebrated chef sticking his name to a diner at sea: Thomas Keller of Per Se, Bouchon and French Laundry fame. You are encouraged to make a reservation before sailing to ‘avoid disappointment’ and even more intriguingly, only one reservation per stateroom per sailing is permitted.

Seabourn itineraries are typically marquee cities in Europe and more than 170 UNESCO World Heritage sites worldwide, combined with lesser-known ports and hideaways.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises – 5+ stars

Regent Seven Seas is another step up in the luxury stakes.

At this level cruising becomes ‘all inclusive’; think open bars, free wines and premium spirits, free minibars, no charges for specialty dining, free shore excursions and, surprisingly for a cruise ship, free wi-fi.

The itineraries include Sydney to Singapore and Sydney to Auckland.

A photograph of a boat in front of the sydney harbour bridge and new year's eve fireworks

These are the best Sydney NYE cruises to book right now

Take to the Harbour for front row seats to the start of 2022

Maxim Boon

Update, December 23: In light of the surge of cases, many Sydney venues are cancelling NYE events. Call ahead of your visit to confirm if celebrations are taking place as planned.

In Sydney, ringing in the new year is a go-big-or-stay-home affair. But this year, the celebrations will be even bigger, we suspect. We’ve spent a quarter of the year indoors, and if you're anything like us, you've got some catching up to do when it comes to big nights out. So, why not spend your last hoorah of the year in the company of Sydney's greatest icons, the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, on a New Year's cruise?

We’ve curated a list of the best you can book right now to secure the well-earned fun you and your mates deserve. Most of the cruise experiences come inclusive of food and drink, so all you need to worry about is having a damn good time.

Starship Sydney

Behold Australia’s largest glass boat, Starship Sydney. Spend your whole NYE on board, indulging in an all-inclusive evening of canapes, cocktails, Australian beers and premium wines, and three entertainment levels, which includes two decks of DJs. Starship Sydney offers an excellent view of the midnight fireworks display, departing from King Street Wharf at 7.30pm and returning at 1am. Tickets are on sale now from $750 per person.

Harbourside Cruises

All aboard the Harbour Spirit, a luxury catamaran that you can hop on for NYE this year. Equipped with gorgeous contemporary interiors and two spacious decks, this 5.5 hour Sydney Harbour party cruise serves up epic views of the fireworks from inside and outside the boat. For $550 per person, enjoy bottomless beer, wine, and soft drink, constant service of appetisers and canapes, and non-stop party bangers on the dancefloor. Departs from Pyrmont at 7:15 pm and returns at 1 am.

Yeah Buoy NYE Boat Party

A three-level boat party with 360-degree unobstructed views of the fireworks? We’re 1000% in. Departing from Port Jackson at 5.30pm, this 7.5hr all-inclusive cruise is the ultimate NYE treat. Live DJs all night, live entertainment, karaoke bar, a luxury seafood buffet, cocktail bar, grazing tables, drink service, and even casino table – you can’t really go wrong. Get your boogie on at Yeah Buoy. Tickets start from $600 per person.

Showboat Art Deco New Year’s Eve Fireworks Cruise

If you’re looking for something a little fancier, look no further than this all-inclusive cruise on the luxurious Sydney Showboat II. Guests can expect to take up the Azure Deck, which is a private third-level area hosting only 60 people (max comfort guaranteed). A deluxe 5-course seated dinner will be served, with premium beverages available for the entire night, alongside a DJ and dancing—the way we all want to enter the new year, right? Tickets are $850 per person.

Fast Ferry Cruises

NYE doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Which, most of the time it does. If you want to jump on a New Year’s Eve cruise without spending more than a few hundred, choose Fast Ferry Cruises. Starting at $200 per person, these shorter 2.5hr cruises are BYO food and drinks and run for either the 9 pm or midnight fireworks, departing from Manly, Rose Bay, or Darling Harbour.

Le Bleu

If you’re an avid fan of electronic dance music and are ready to spend NYE with banging tunes and boogies, you can’t go past a ride on Le Bleu. The night features an exclusive DJ set from BINARY and Alvin Chan and the best possible views of the fireworks, which means you’ll be starting 2022 off with a big bang (and not just ‘cos of the fireworks). There’ll be a Belvedere Vodka on arrival, sushi platters to munch on during the night, and of course a glass of Moet Chandon champagne at midnight. Tickets are $500 plus a small booking fee.

Bella Vista New Year’s Eve Cruise

Welcome in the new year aboard a luxury glass vessel with 3m high wraparound windows, giving you a prime position for the midnight fireworks. This means it won’t be a problem getting an incredible view of the midnight fireworks. With prices starting at $799 per person, you can choose from three luxurious decks, each with all-inclusive food, premium drinks, and live entertainment. The cruise departs from King Street Wharf at 7.30pm and returns at 1am.

The two dining rooms are fully air-conditioned too, so the humidity won’t be a problem at all. There’s limited seating aboard My Way – with only 100 seats – so you’ll want to get in quick to secure a spot on a less-crowded cruise.

Tall Ship Dinner Cruise

Most NYE cruises around Sydney are on modernised boats. But why not take a step on the traditional sailing boat side this New Year’s? Choose between three tall ships for an unforgettable dinner cruise on the harbour, all offering front-row views of the fireworks. Dine on fresh seafood, gourmet barbecue, and more, accompanied by bottomless wine, beer, soft drinks, and live music during the 5.5-hour cruise. There’ll also be an open bar, with premium brand drinks, including spirits. The large observation deck offers 360-degree views of Sydney Harbour, so it’s a perfect spot to watch the fireworks. At $725 per person for six hours of cruising fun, Vagabond Spirit NYE is the ultimate way to ring in the new year.

Glass Island will take you one of the best spots in the harbour too, departing from King Street Wharf at 8.50pm sharp and returning at 12.30am.

Waratah New Year’s Eve Cruise

Fancy to spend your NYE on the beautiful heritage boat, Waratah? Magistic Cruises

This whopping 7.25-hour cruise includes everything you could possibly need to tick off your NYE cruise bucket list—gourmet seafood buffet (including fresh king prawns), premium beer, wine, and spirits, DJ and dancing on board, fireworks views from inside the exclusion zone. Why Royal Caribbean isn't going all in on massive cruise ships despite the wild success of its new Icon of the Seas

  • Royal Caribbean International has unveiled a swath of giant cruise ships over the past few years.
  • Its CEO said its new world's largest ship, the  Icon of the Seas,  is its "best-selling product" ever.
  • But the cruise line doesn't plan on going all in on megaships forever.

Insider Today

Earlier this year, guests at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island were the first to revel at the historic sight of the world's largest cruise ships, Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, docked side-by-side.

The vessels towered over their communal dock like skyscrapers, casting a dark shadow over their relatively tiny shared pier.

Together, they can accommodate about 19,250 people.

At 1,196 feet long and weighing 248,663 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas is a sight to behold. When it launched in late January, the giant vessel upstaged its eight-foot shorter predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's biggest.

At the time, it was no surprise: Every new Royal Caribbean ship seemed to dethrone another Royal Caribbean ship for this title.

But not for long.

The company's smaller ships, important for diverse trips, are aging.

The company is synonymous with its mega vessels. And they've been mega-hits: Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, has repeatedly called the Icon of the Seas the "best-selling product" in the company's history.

Related stories

Royal Caribbean is set to launch four more megaships by 2028 — representing about a third of its total fleet. So far, most of the megaships' scheduled sailings are in the Caribbean.

The other 21 smaller vessels tend to have more specialized itineraries, Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider.

Given their trimmer sizes, these vessels can operate more sailings outside the Caribbean , which often reel in high fares and customer satisfaction for the company, Jay Schneider, the chief product-innovation officer at Royal Caribbean Group, told reporters in January. Think of the Mediterranean, Alaska, and South Pacific itineraries — the latter are especially important as the cruise line continues to ramp up business in Asia.

But these destination-flexible cruise liners are aging as Royal Caribbean continues to unveil their giant counterparts. The company launched its four oldest Vision-class ships, with a maximum 2,730-guest capacity, between 1996 and 1998.

They're tiny and old compared to the 2-month-old, 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas .

Looking ahead, Royal Caribbean plans to return to the basics: smaller cruise ships.

Despite the cruise line's success with mega-vessels, Schneider said Royal Caribbean is now considering a new class of ships that would start "smaller" — noting that he was "careful to say small, but less-than-large."

"The reality is, families want to go on vacations not just in the Western and Eastern Caribbean where a ship like Icon can get into," Schneider said. "They want to stay with our brand and journey to different destinations that require more versatility in ship size."

Desirable destinations such as French Polynesia and Venice, Italy, have limited visiting cruises , including size restrictions, to curb pollution and overcrowding. But, as Schneider said, small-vessel-enabled specialized itineraries are also important to travelers.

Giant mass-market floating resorts also often attract first-time cruisers, enamored by their family-friendly water parks and Broadway-style shows. But after a few good vacations at sea, these no-longer-new-to-cruising guests might start craving quieter ships or more bespoke itineraries.

"Alaska cruises tend not to be the first-time cruiser," Scholes told BI. "I don't really see Icon of the Seas doing a Norwegian Fjord or Alaska trip."

Plus, "there's probably only so much demand for these giant ships," Scholes said.

Royal Caribbean has already succeeded in the first part: bringing in a swath of new cruisers with its megaships. Now, it has to retain them.

While some travelers dream of lounging on a beach in the Caribbean, others might be itching to put on hiking shoes and explore the great outdoors. If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.

Princess Cruises

majestic princess in glacier bay alaska

A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

line break

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

Hollywood director James Cameron has been spotted blending in at Sydney’s busy international airport.

Cameron, 69, who directed some of the biggest blockbuster films, including Avatar , Titanic , and Aliens , kept it casual in Sydney.

The director wore cargo pants and a casual black long-sleeved T-shirt and even carried his backpack. He looked less like a hugely famous star and more like a sensible dad leaving after enjoying a well-planned holiday.

Cameron has just been in Perth to launch his own exhibition, James Cameron — Challenging the Deep, at the WA Maritime Museum, which opened on March 22.

The exhibition runs until July and highlights Cameron’s relationship between filmmaking and deep ocean exploration.

The director was so keen on it that he travelled to Australia to celebrate its grand opening and held a Q&A with film critic Ben O’Shea.

James Cameron cares so much about deep ocean exploration. Picture Rohan Kelly

Cameron has long been very passionate about deep-sea diving, to the point that he told Boat International that movies have come a way for him to highlight his ocean explorations.

“It’s not doing the expeditions to facilitate better movie making; it’s doing movie making to facilitate the science and exploration,” he said.

Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic that grossed billions was based on one of the world’s most famous shipwrecks and launched the career of Kate Winslet and sent Leonardo DiCaprio’s career into a whole new stratosphere.

The film also allowed him to explore his passion for deep-sea diving; it has been reported that he has visited the wreck over 30 times.

Outside of Cameron’s passion for the ocean and filmmaking, the famed director lives a fairly private life and has been married to actor Suzy Amis Cameron since 2000, whom he met while filming the Titanic and now has three children.

While Cameron still appears at awards ceremonies and happily does public speaking gigs occasionally, he seems to live a fairly low-key life otherwise and certainly isn’t one of those famous people whose personal lives have ever eclipsed his work.

Cameron, who has been four times previously, opened up to The Guardian in 2017 about the type of woman he likes.

“Being attracted to strong independent women has the downside that they’re strong independent women — they inherently don’t need you! Fortunately, I’m married now to a strong, independent woman who does believe she needs me,” he said.

The 10 Best Sydney Sweeney Movies & TV Shows, Ranked

"I have never EVER been happier!"

Sydney Sweeney has become a trailblazing talent of a new generation of film and television sensations . A celebrated star, Sweeney has become an icon of the small screen while endearing herself to tens of millions of fans with appearances on talk show series like Hot Ones and Saturday Night Live , While society has been quick to brandish her as a stereotypical blonde bombshell, Sweeney has exhibited an incredible knack for tackling complex and even unlikable characters with poise and sophistication.

With her career going from strength to strength in recent years, her greatest accomplishments range from hit HBO series to underrated coming-of-age gems and even to Academy Award-winning movies. She has experienced recent success with Anyone But You and Immaculate , both of which have seen her star rise higher, but one gets the impression she isn't even close to reaching her peak. That being said, these movies and series are representative of Sweeney's talents in what has been a phenomenal career thus far .

10 'Big Time Adolescence' (2019)

Director: jason orley.

This endearing coming-of-age dramedy finds freshness in its specificity and thematic ideas and stars Griffin Gluck ( Cruel Summer ) and Pete Davidson ( Saturday Night Live ). Big Time Adolescence focuses on the complicated friendship between Mo, an intelligent teen, and Zeke, the drug-dealing college dropout he idolizes. When Mo begins dealing, it starts to become clear that Zeke is a bad influence on the 16-year-old despite being his best friend.

Its approach to some of its subject matter is a bit juvenile. Still, the ideas explored and the attitude in which they are analyzed walk a delicate line between offering a troubling observation of Mo's life and placing audiences in the youth's headspace. Sydney Sweeney co-stars as Zeke's girlfriend, Holly, who plays a major role in the context of Mo and Zeke's bond, forming close relationships with both characters. The role allows for Sweeney to showcase her acting chops in a smaller role , proving she's a scene-stealing presence regardless of the film.

9 'Sharp Objects' (2018)

Creator: marti noxon.

Sharp Objects is an 8-episode miniseries from HBO that was released to critical acclaim in 2018, though it perhaps hasn't garnered the widespread popularity it deserves. It follows Camille ( Amy Adams ), an alcoholic crime reporter recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital who returns to her hometown in Missouri to investigate the murder of two young girls. As she renews her complicated relationship with her mother, Camille must confront demons from her past.

The series flaunts an impressive cast, including Patricia Clarkson ( The Station Agent ), Sophia Lillis ( It ), and Eliza Scanlen ( Little Women ). Sydney Sweeney appears in a supporting role as Alice, Camille's teenage roommate from the psychiatric facility, with her performance effectively presenting a balanced yet tragic character in limited screen time . In just one episode, Sweeney makes a strong impression, keeping up with Adams, who's delivering career-best work here. The two create a compelling portrayal of human connection at its most intimate and pure.

8 'Everything Sucks!' (2018)

Creators: ben york jones & michael mohan.

An underappreciated foray into coming-of-age television, Everything Sucks! follows a band of outcast high school students in 1996. When the school play is abruptly canceled following the destruction of the set, the drama kids and the A/V club join forces to make a movie to be presented to the entire school. Crushes develop, and friendships are tested as the kids work on the production while navigating high school life.

Imbued with a sense of adolescent angst that beautifully captures the awkward and sometimes hilarious antics of teenage life, Everything Sucks! is an endearing sleeper hit even if it did adhere to genre norms . Sweeney makes an immediate impression as Emaline Addario, an overly dramatic student whose romances bring about heartache and self-discovery for herself and her classmates. The role allows Sweeney to embrace her lighter side , especially compared to the roles that would come later in her career. The series was sadly canceled after one season , joining the many Netflix shows that never got the chance to find an audience.

7 'Anyone But You' (2023)

Director: will gluck.

An R-rated rom-com that hinges on the chemistry of its two stars, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Anyone But You became a bit of a buzz movie with its glaring marketing campaign and its promise of edgy fun. It follows Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell), whose past romance quickly disintegrated after a promising first date, as they head to Australia for a wedding. Their disdain for each other leads to interesting consequences when they pretend to be a couple to ensure the wedding goes smoothly.

While the plot doesn't re-invent the rom-com and hinges a lot of its allure on imbuing genre tropes with raunchier-than-usual gags, Anyone But You still manages to work a treat thanks to its dazzling stars . They give the film a comedic momentum that keeps the story afloat across the 103-minute runtime, while also presenting a fun and vibrant love story through their chemistry. The film has become a landmark box office achievement , with its immense popularity a hopeful sign for the future of romantic cinema.

6 'Americana' (2023)

Director: tony tost.

An under-the-radar crime-comedy written and directed by acclaimed television writer Tony Tost ( Damnation ), Americana may not have drawn much attention, but it still offers a vibrant sense of fun that makes it one of Sweeney's best films. She co-stars alongside singer/songwriter Halsey , with the film following several independent social outcasts whose journeys violently collide when they set their sights on a rare and supposedly powerful shirt that emerges on the black market in South Dakota.

A worthy modern Western with an acidic sense of humor and a glorious penchant for obscene violence, Americana has an entertaining purity as it tracks the linking stories of its greedy, desperate characters. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable and utterly chaotic 110 minutes that thrives as a stylish adventure of non-linear storytelling and reprehensible renegades. Americana intelligently utilizes Sweeney's underrated knack for playing shady and amoral characters while featuring an eclectic supporting cast that elevates the film in spectacular fashion.

Americana is not available to rent or stream in the US and Canada.

5 'Euphoria' (2019-)

Creator: sam levinson.

A true modern phenomenon, Euphoria is a daring teenage drama that pulls no punches in its depiction of the ugliest side of school life. Led by Emmy-winner Zendaya ( Dune: Part Two ), the series documents the horrific struggles of her and her classmates as they fall to the thralls of hard drugs, social media, disturbing sexual relationships, and financial desperation while trying to learn who they are as young adults. Sweeney co-stars as Cassie Howard, a student plagued by her sexual history .

A technical feat, Euphoria presents its characters' woes amid a surreal, entrancing visual display designed to capture the emotional truths of its characters through hyper-stylized cinematography and set design. While the series has been criticized for its glamorization of its troubling core themes and treatment of its female characters , it remains a current cultural icon. The show earned Sweeney a 2022 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, a major recognition in the actress' blossoming career.

4 'Reality' (2023)

Director: tina satter.

An affirming outing that proved Sweeney was capable of leading a film alone, Reality serves as an urgent biographical crime drama. It follows Reality Winner , a former U.S. Air Force member and NSA translator arrested in 2017 for leaking information pertaining to Russia's involvement in the 2016 American election. Reality is a dramatization of her interrogation and eventual arrest by FBI agents.

The film is based on the play Is This a Room , which was the creation of the film's director, Tina Satter and functioned as a verbatim performance of the transcript of the interrogation. Reality thrives at taking the minimalist approach of the stage play and expanding it seamlessly to fit the scale of a feature-length film without ever compromising the story's stripped-back grit or unsettling adherence to the true events. Sweeney commands the screen with an exceptional performance , portraying a terrified young woman gradually realizing that her life is being uprooted.

3 'The Handmaid's Tale' (2017 - Present)

Creator: bruce miller.

Serving as a career breakthrough for Sweeney , Hulu's The Handmaid’s Tale , an adaptation of Margaret Atwood 's novel, is set in a dystopian future where fertility rates have collapsed and society has been taken over by a tyrannical religious ruling class. It focuses on June Osborne, played by Emmy-winner Elisabeth Moss ( Mad Men ), a woman forced into slavery on account of her fertility. Season 2 sees Sweeney playing the pious Eden Spencer, who is presented as a child bride to Nick Blaine, played by Max Minghella ( The Social Network ).

Despite its confronting premise, The Handmaid’s Tale has become a hit in modern television , earning high praise for its narrative conviction and provocativeness, powerful presentation, and exceptional performances. With a refusal to pull its punches and offer easier alternatives to its thematic heft has made The Handmaid's Tale one of the more harrowing series on television. Its bleak setting has served as an ignition point for political discussions as well, making it an urgent conversation starter, even if not the easiest or most pleasant viewing experience.

The Handmaid's Tale

2 'the white lotus' (2021 - present), creator: mike white.

A twisty, character-driven dark comedy with plenty of shocking turns and no small amount of scandalous intrigue, The White Lotus has become a hallmark of modern television. Sydney Sweeney plays a major part in Season 1, which focuses on a wide range of visitors and staff at the eponymous luxury resort. As guests and workers begin to clash, the relaxing Hawaiian getaway deteriorates, sending everyone into a frenzied panic as their darkest secrets begin to spill out.

With its all-star cast, intense story beats, and plenty of taboo content, The White Lotus has an intoxicating allure that is difficult to resist once indulged . The characters are cruel, conniving, and materialistic, serving as critiques of class, elitism, and the lingering effects of imperialism. Sweeney embraces the opportunity to play a mean-spirited brat with sensational results , with her Olivia Mossbacher a snide and spoiled by-product of unfettered privilege. Sweeney earned another Emmy nomination for her portrayal, losing against her co-star, the hilarious Jennifer Coolidge ( Legally Blonde ).

The White Lotus

1 'once upon a time in hollywood' (2019), director: quentin tarantino.

The ninth film from Quentin Tarantino , 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a loving yet revisionist look at a complicated time in Hollywood history, an era of supposed bliss that was careening towards a violent demise. It follows TV actor Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio ( The Wolf of Wall Street ), as his career begins to dwindle. All the while, his stuntman Cliff Boothe, an Oscar-winning Brad Pitt ( Babylon ), stays by his side, while his neighbor, Sharon Tate , played by Margot Robbie ( Barbie ), enjoys the beginning of her career as an actress.

The film sees Tarantino letting his creative impulses run wild. Yet, there is a controlled grasp on the narrative that carefully steers viewers through every scene, enabling the film to feel breezy and fresh in some moments and sickeningly intense in others. It has become a modern classic as an affectionate ode to American cinema in its heyday. While Sweeney only had a small part as Dianne “Snake” Lake, it remains the best picture she has appeared in thus far , and movie lovers everywhere will notice her supporting role with interest, given how far she has come since.

Sydney Sweeney only does projects that scare her

As an actor and a producer, Sweeney says she just wants to try new things

Sydney Sweeney is quickly becoming one of the brightest stars in Hollywood , and over the last few years, she’s mostly done it through offbeat, unconventional, extremely entertaining movies. Ahead of the release of her latest movie, the nun-horror film Immaculate , Polygon talked to Sweeney about how she picks her projects, and what it means to star in them versus produce them.

According to Sweeney, her process for choosing scripts and projects is simple: It has to scare her. When she’s thinking about scripts, she explains, “If something scares me in a challenging way, then that’s the one I should do.”

It didn’t hurt that Immaculate scared her for more reasons than the sense that it was a challenging role. She first auditioned for the movie a decade ago, when she was 16 — long before Euphoria skyrocketed her fame. Sweeney says Immaculate was “very different” when she first auditioned for it, but that it stuck with her. So when she created her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films , and started thinking about how to weaponize her love of horror movies for her next project, she immediately wanted to track down the script that still creeped her out all those years later. When she found out that Immaculate was still unproduced, she says she had to jump at that chance.

“I hadn’t seen a character that had gone on such a journey with a crazy arc like Cecilia,” Sweeney said. “She starts off in such a quiet, pure, innocent space and just goes through such a transformation. [...] So it’s really fun to have a character on the acting side that just stretches your legs and challenges you in new ways.”

Cecilia (Sidney Sweeney) screams in an extreme close-up shot, as multiple sets of hands wrap around her face and indent her skin in Immaculate

To take all those risks, both as a producer and an actor, Sweeney says she needed people around her she could trust, which is why she hand-selected the crew and picked her frequent collaborator Michael Mohan to direct.

“Mike and I have worked together on multiple projects, and I’ve always felt like I’ve had such a great relationship with him where I can follow him up,” Sweeney said. “Mike actually listens and will even fight me on my opinions, which I think is important. You do not want to have a yes-manager as your partner.

“And I think we just see movies the same way. I love that he is loyal to his team. I love it. He’s loyal to the crew members. I like how he works on set. […] And as a producer, I want to make sure that the sets I run also have a similar environment to those I’ve experienced as an actor working with Mike. Having him as a leader on the project, I know that everybody will feel respected and enjoy their experience.”

While fear of failure and promise of new and exciting success might be critical for Sweeney as an actor, her choices for her production company are a little bit different, though no less risky.

“On the producing side, it’s more that I just want to try out everything and see what I like most, or what I might be better at,” Sweeney said. “And until I discover that, I’m going to keep trying different genres.”

Immaculate is in theaters now.
