About the Show

“Pink Martini is a rollicking around-the-world musical adventure… if the United Nations had a house band in 1962, hopefully we’d be that band.” — Thomas Lauderdale, bandleader/pianist

Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – Thomas Lauderdale founded Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks.

Twenty years later, Pink Martini still tours the world, singing in 22 languages at opera houses, concert halls, film festivals, museums and fashion shows.   In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.

Pound for pound, no other band does what Pink Martini does. With the combined power of a dozen musicians, the self-described “little orchestra” performs a rollicking cross-genre mix of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop The Washington Post called “rich, hugely approachable, utterly cosmopolitan yet utterly unpretentious... it seems to speak to just about everybody.” They return with their infectiously joyous, dance-friendly takes on classic holiday music to make your season swing.

Formed in 1994 by pianist Thomas Lauderdale in Portland, Oregon, the group has built a monstrous fan base through performances in settings ranging from the Cannes Film Festival and the Grand Opening of Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, to late night television with David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, and Jools Holland and even a video greeting to the astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Fronted by the dynamic vocalist China Forbes, Pink Martini has performed with over 50 of the world’s great orchestras and recorded 15 full-length albums and EPs on Lauderdale’s own Heinz imprint, collaborating with Japanese vocal star Saori Yuki’s 1969 album and 2014’s Dream a Little Dream in partnership with The Von Trapps. Most recently, they released a pair of EPs recorded in conjunction with Portland pianist/singer Jimmie Herrod and vocalist Edna Vazquez

Featuring a dozen musicians and fronted by the dynamic vocalist China Forbes, the band returns with their joyous takes on classic holiday music to make your season swing.

The League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association is also hosting a fundraising event with pre-concert cocktails, intermission lounge, and afterparty with special guests Pink Martini. Nicki Minaj kicked off her highly-anticipated Pink Friday 2 World Tour on March 1 in Oakland. The rapper hasn’t toured for a number of years, so her fan base was eager to support the superstar on the road once again. As she begins playing to huge crowds across America, Minaj’s latest album is on the rise, with superfans streaming and buying it once more.

Pink Friday 2 improves on four Billboard charts this week. The set has been out for months, but Minaj and her latest full-length have been receiving so much attention lately, that many fans have returned to the set–either in preparation for an upcoming show they have tickets to, or simply to hear the collection once more.

The album moves the greatest distance on the Billboard 200, the chart company’s ranking of the most-consumed full-lengths in the U.S. This frame, it’s up to No. 26, lifting from No. 40.

In the past tracking week, Pink Friday 2 moved 21,807 equivalent units in the U.S. That sum is up more than 13% from the frame prior, which shows that the title is definitely gaining ground in terms of total consumption, not just on the charts. Of that sum, just under 2,000 were pure purchases.

The same set is surging on streaming platforms, which is the easiest way for fans to listen to Pink Friday 2 again. The title climbs to No. 29 on Billboard’s Top Streaming Albums tally, up from No. 33. It reached the No. 1 spot in its earliest days on the relatively new ranking.

As should be expected, Pink Friday 2 performs best on some of Billboard’s rap and hip-hop-focused charts. The title returns to the top 10 on both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums lists after falling outside the highest region not long ago. Minaj’s most recent project steps up to No. 9 on the former roster and No. 7 on the latter.

Excitement about a musician’s tour is typically at its peak when the trek begins. Minaj may not sustain these gains, especially as other hip-hop artists crowd the Billboard charts she’s rising on this frame. Pink Friday 2 will continue to perform well in the coming weeks and months, but it may soon fall again.
