The first step is to determine the type of visa you need. There are several types of visas available for Indian citizens travelling to Paris, including a tourist visa, a business visa, and a student visa. Depending on the purpose of your trip, you may need to apply for a specific type of visa. It's important to keep in mind that you apply for a visa at least 60 days prior to your journey time as the processing, verification can take up a lot of time.

The most common type of visa for Indian citizens travelling to Paris is the Schengen visa. This visa allows you to enter and stay in any of the 26 countries that are part of the Schengen Area which includes France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and other European countries. With a Schengen visa, you can stay in Paris for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Once you have determined the type of visa you need, you will need to submit the necessary documents to the French Embassy or Consulate in India. The documents required for a visa application vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. Generally, you will need to provide proof of identity, proof of residence, proof of financial means, and a valid passport.

Once you have submitted the necessary documents, you will need to wait for your visa to be processed. Processing times can vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for, but it typically takes between 2-4 weeks. Once your visa is approved, you will be able to travel to Paris.

It is important to note that visa requirements for Indian citizens travelling to Paris may change from time to time. Therefore, it is important to check the latest visa requirements before you start planning your trip. Additionally, it is also important to remember that a visa does not guarantee entry into France. You must still meet the entry requirements of the French authorities upon arrival.

In conclusion, travelling to Paris is a great experience for Indian citizens. However, before you can plan your dream trip, you must first understand the visa requirements for Indian citizens travelling to Paris.

I am Traveling between USA and India via France? Do I Need a Transit or Schengen Visa for France

The lack of clarity about transit visa requirements is one of the reasons for denial of boarding to travelers flying between USA and India via France. Do you need a Schengen visa or airport transit visa for France? This depends on your nationality, itinerary and visa for the destination country. France is a popular international transit point on long-haul routes between USA and India that see flights by Delta Air Lines and Air France.

airport transit French visa, Schengen visa France, visa for flights to India from USA

Effective from July 2018, Indian passport holders were excepted from requiring an airport transit visa to travel through Paris CDG and other international airports in France. However, the visa-free transit facility was ruled out during the pandemic. Some Indians are still under the impression that they can pass through France without a transit visa while traveling on international flights between India and USA.

But the truth is that Indian passport holders must need an airport transit visa to transit through France for their final destinations outside the Schengen area . There are certain exemptions . If you have a valid US visa or a Green Card, you are eligible for visa-free transit in the international transit area of Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Those holding a valid visa or residence permit issued by Canada, Ireland, and Japan are eligible for the same. The visa-free transit facility is subject to the condition that they don’t step out of the international transit area.

France’s transit visa requirement for Indians changes if their visa or residence permit issued by the US or any other aforementioned country expires before, during or right after their transit in Paris. In this scenario, they need an airport transit visa or a transit Schengen visa for hassle-free transit in France. However, an airport transit Schengen visa does not allow them to enter the Schengen area outside the Paris CDG Airport.

If your itinerary has long daytime or overnight layover in France and you plan to go for sightseeing or accommodate yourself outside the airport, you need a short-stay Schengen Visa, regardless of your valid US visa or residence permit. Even if you are a US citizen, you need a short-stay Schengen visa to enter the Schengen territory during a layover at Paris CDG Airport.

Hi Indian eagle

I have an expired H1B visa. I have a short layover of 2.5 hours at Paris to travel to India. I plan to remain only in the international area. On checking with delta they sent me a link to a Timatic website that states this : “Transiting without a visa is possible for Nationals of India with a normal passport transiting through Paris (CDG), arriving from a non-Schengen Member State with a confirmed onward ticket for a flight within 24 hours to a third country which is not a Schengen Member State. They must: – have a used, valid or expired visa issued by Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Ireland (Rep.), Japan, Romania or USA (an expired visa is accepted if it is valid when departing from the country that issued the visa), and – be returning from the country that issued the visa, and – stay in the international transit area of the airport, and – have documents required for their next destination.”

Would I still need a transit visa in this situation? What is the contact for the French embassy/consulate that you refer to above ?

Hi AV! Be requested to share with us the link from Delta.

https://www.timaticweb2.com/integration/external-result/o140G3GRlzggZl4Zq0au0OlBzNWl4g Please note that this is not an official delta link.

Hi Harkirat! Paris to Amsterdam is the domestic leg that involves terminal change at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Terminal change from international to domestic requires transit passengers to undergo immigration checks. In our knowledge, it is safe to have an airport transit visa. At the same time, it is recommended that you check with the airline as well. Thanks1

Hi, My parents are travelling from Vadodara, Gujarat to Quebec, Canada via Paris on visitor visa. They have 10 hrs of layover in Paris. Do they need transit visa or any other kind of visa for travelling? I checked on google, it says they do not need of visa but when I called in airline, they told that my parents need transit visa. But I still have to checked with embassy. I am very confused. Any of your help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

Hi Yax! There are different scenarios of a layover at Paris Airport. If they are required to transfer from one terminal to another terminal in the event of airline/aircraft change, they may undergo immigration checks – which makes a transit visa compulsory. A transit visa is mandatory if your parents plan to spend the 10-hour long layover outside the international transit area of the airport.

Hi, They do not have any terminal change in Paris. Neither they are going out of the airport. So, in that case they need any visa? Moreover, I also called in airline AirFrance and talked with 2 different people and both have different answers. One is saying they need transit visa and other person told they do not need any visa as long as they have valid Canadian visitor visa. Thank you in advanced.

Best Time to Visit Paris

The best time to visit Paris is from spring to fall, which lasts from March to October. Summer is also the most crowded time – and the most expensive – for Paris tourism. For lower rates of Paris packages and significantly shorter lines at attractions, plan a visit in the fall. Seasonal attractions will surely delight you but if you are travelling on a budget, the off-season is the best time to visit Paris. Keep in mind, though, that Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, seeing more than 30 million travellers yearly. So, no matter what time you visit, there will always be a lot of tourists. Here is a monthly breakup that might help you decide your best time to visit Paris.

March to May: Paris comes alive in spring with beautiful flora all around. February to April is excellent for outdoor activities like cycling, walking, picnics and more. This is the peak season for tourists visiting Paris as the Paris weather is at its best.

June to August: Summer time in Paris is when the city receives more than eight hours of sunshine daily. However, there can be unexpected showers so remember to carry an umbrella with you at all times. Light cotton clothes, hats, sunscreen, sunglasses and a bottle of water are some other things you need to carry if travelling to Paris between June and August.

September to October: September to December is autumn in Paris. The average temperature is between 10-15°C and the nights are cooler. Paris packages for travel during this season are relatively lower priced than summer.

November to February: The temperature during these months can drop to 1°C and the Paris weather can be pretty cold. If you plan to visit during this time, be sure to pack enough heavy woolens to help you brave the cold Paris weather. Since there are fewer tourists, the prices of accommodation and transit decrease considerably. This is the best time to visit Paris for budget travelers.

How to Reach Paris

Being the capital of the most visited country in the world, Paris sees a lot of tourists throughout the year. There are three international airports in Paris, namely Charles de Gaulle International Airport, Orly International Airport and Beauvais (Aéroport de Beauvais Tillé).

If you are looking at booking Paris tour packages from India, you can choose from a variety of airlines. Many airlines operate flights to Paris from various Indian cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru etc. Direct flights to Paris from India are operated by Air India and Air France.

Paris enjoys good bus service, both within the city and to and from other cities in France. Eurolines is one of the major bus operators in Paris. There is also Megabus, a budget travel bus operator, which connects Paris with Brussels, United Kingdom, Amsterdam etc.

Paris is linked to all important cities of France by excellently built expressways (also called autoroutes). Traffic is dense, and it is best to travel by public transport. If you do wish to travel by car, it is advisable to hire a taxi.

Paris enjoys excellent railway connectivity to all other parts of France and the rest of Europe, which greatly boosts Paris tourism from all around the world. Paris has six different railway stations, which are not connected to each other but run trains to and from various other cities and European countries. Some of the important trains in Paris include the Train Express Régionale, Trains à Grande Vitesse, the high-speed Thalys, the Eurostar and Intercity trains.

Paris Visa for Indians

Indian travellers visiting Paris or any other city in France for a holiday are required to obtain a France visa before travel. France is a part of the Schengen group of countries and hence the Schengen visa rules apply for France visa. A tourist visa is granted for a period of less than 90 days, and can be applied for up to 3 months before the start of the intended Paris tour package from India.

MakeMyTrip offers visa application assistance as a part of Paris tour packages.

Places to visit in Paris

Eiffel Tower

The most enthralling and mesmerizing of all Paris tourist places is the Eiffel Tower. It finds its place among the Seven Wonders of the World. An architectural marvel, the Eiffel Tower tops the list of places to visit in Paris. It is synonymous with the identity of Paris, and is undoubtedly the most visited monument in the world.

La Dame de fer (the Iron Lady), as the French call it, the Eiffel Tower is truly magnificent and stands proudly at a height of 300 metres. Once the tallest structure in the world, it is now France’s best-known landmark. It consists of three floors, with the first two levels offering restaurants while the top level is for panoramic views of the city. The Eiffel Tower is best seen at night, when the city of Paris glitters below in all its glory. You can also pre-book a visit to the Eiffel Tower as a part of your Paris honeymoon package.

Palace of Versailles

Once the residence of King Louis XIV of France, the Palace of Versailles is one of the three most visited monuments in France. The Hall of Mirrors, the King’s Grand Apartments and the Museum of History of France are located in the Palace and offer insights into the French history. The magnificent palace complex, along with its beautiful gardens and grounds, leave visitors spellbound. Owing to the grand size of the palace complex, a mini train shuttles between the terrace in front of the castle and the Grand and Petit Trianon. This palace is one of the grandest and the most historic places to visit in Paris.

Louvre Museum

A pilgrimage for art lovers, the Louvre or Musée du Louvre is one of the most visited art museums in the world. Home to the iconic painting of Mona Lisa that art aficionados from across the globe come to see, The Louvre is also the biggest museum in the world in terms of the number of exhibits. Located on the banks of the River Seine, the museum showcases ornate traditional architecture, and is one of the most famous Paris attractions. The Louvre houses some of the most famous and in-demand art collections in the world including Venus de Milo and the Victory of Samothrace.

Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris

Also known as Notre Dame Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris), is one of the world's most stunning Gothic-style cathedrals. It tops the chart of the most iconic places to visit in Paris and has been the highlight of Paris tourism for ages. One among the connoisseurs of art and architecture, Notre Dame Cathedral is famed for its dramatic towers, spire, stained glass, rose window, statues and sculptures. After a disastrous wildfire struck the cathedral and caused significant damage in April 2019, it has been shut down for visitors. Repair work at a large scale has been started and efforts are being made to restore the structure.

Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe, the world’s largest triumphal arch is a significant Paris attraction. In 1806, Napoleon I ordered the construction of this arch to honour the Grande Armee, and it now makes for a breathtaking center of Paris’ cityscape. The iconic monument is inspired by the arches of Antiquity, and carries some renowned names from the country. If you stop by in the evening, you’ll notice that a flame is lit for the Unknown Soldier. Explore the monument to know its incredible history and national importance.

Champ-Elysees

Soak up the unique experience of Paris on the Champs Elysees, the most stunning avenue in the world. It is located right across The Arc de Triomphe. It is visited each day by nearly 300,000 people, who come to admire its majestic monuments, enjoy a shopping spree, or get caught up in the excitement of the major festive events that are organized here. It is the best place to visit in Paris for fashionistas. There’s always something going on, by day or by night. It is a shopper’s paradise and you will find outlets of all major brands in the world, local as well as international. Your Paris honeymoon package is incomplete without visiting this spot.

Sacre Coeur

Referred to as "that big meringue" by the Parisians, Sacre Coeur rests atop the hill of Montmartre. Over a million tourists flock to visit the structure every year. They climb up almost 270 stairs to the top of the hill, to reach this Basilica. Its gold-leaf heavy, Romanesque and Byzantine-style interiors are a huge hit. However, visitors prefer staying outside on the terraces which offer panoramic views of the city below.

Montmartre is a medieval hilltop village in Paris. You will notice a white building atop a hill, St-Pierre-de-Montmartre, one of the oldest churches in Paris, and a historical landmark in Montmartre. This church makes for the highest point in the city of Paris. St-Pierre-de-Montmartre is built on a traditional Latin-cross plan, and gives a hint of medieval and later styles in its make. A must-visit on your exploration of Montmartre, this historical church with its stained-glass windows is absolutely jaw-dropping. A walk through the artistic neighbourhood of Montmartre is one of the most interesting things to experience during your Paris honeymoon.

Quartier Latin

The Latin Quarter is the intellectual center of Paris. Bookstores, schools, churches, book-clubs, publishing houses, and expensive boutiques characterize the district. It is the best place to visit in Paris for literature lovers. Founded in 1253, the quarter was called Latin because students and professors spoke the language. You will follow the footsteps of Descartes, Verlaine, and Hemingway as you explore. Changing times have brought Greek, Moroccan, and Vietnamese immigrants, among others, offering everything from couscous to fiery-hot spring rolls and souvlaki. Stroll along Quai de Montebello, going through the collection of the Bouquinistes (secondhand-book dealers).

The most entertaining of all Paris attractions, Disneyland is one of the best places to visit in Paris, especially with kids. Disneyland boasts two theme parks, along with entertainment options, shopping complexes and food courts. There are also seven resorts and a golf course within Disneyland, making it a delightful destination for children as well as adults. Relive your favourite Disney moments- enjoy live musical performances, get onto thrilling themed rides, meet your favourite Disney characters, and be amazed by the end-of-the-day parade which culminates in a spectacular fireworks show.

5 visa updates for 2024 that Indian travellers will benefit from

Panchali Dey , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL NEWS , WORLD Updated : Apr 6, 2024, 12:53 IST

paris visit visa from india

With the summer holiday season fast approaching, it's time to start mapping out your travel plans. And as you do, it's also essential to stay updated on the latest visa regulations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Also, staying updated will help you choose your options more wisely, and make the most out of it. In short, knowing the visa requirements and updates can make all the difference.

Here are some noteworthy visa updates for 2024 that every Indian traveller should be aware of.

Japan's introduction of eVisas for Indian travellers

Japan has launched eVisa applications for Indian travellers. Administered by Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, this streamlined process retains the familiar steps of submitting documents and applications to VFS. Designed for short-term tourism, the eVisa will be offering a single-entry option allowing stays of up to 90 days. Both Indian nationals and foreigners residing in India are eligible to submit their applications.

Notably, visas will now be issued electronically rather than as physical stickers in passports. Upon approval, travellers must present a visa issuance notice on their mobile device at the airport, necessitating internet access. Do note that alternative formats such as PDFs or printed copies of the eVisa will not be accepted.

Dubai's introduces five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa

Dubai has recently introduced a new visa program tailored for Indian tourists in response to a significant increase in the number of Indian visitors. This visa program offers a five-year, multiple-entry permit, enabling travelers to spend up to 90 days per visit, with the option to extend once, and a yearly cap of 180 days.

This visa will cater to both business and leisure trips, and will allow unlimited entries and exits within the five-year period. Requirements will include a passport photo, six months' worth of bank statements showing a balance of at least $4,000 (INR 3,33,447), a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months, health insurance, and round-trip flight tickets. The application process will typically take 2-5 days, with submissions accepted through the GDRFA website or app, or the official ICP website.

Thailand's visa-free option for Indian travellers

The Thai Government recently announced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. During this period, Indian travellers can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without requiring a tourist visa, enjoying a 30-day stay.

Kenya's eliminates visa requirements

Effective January 1, Kenya eliminated visa requirements for not only Indian citizens, but also for all global visitors, in a move aimed at bolstering the nation's vital tourism sector. This visa-free initiative will facilitate seamless travel experiences for visitors keen on wildlife safaris and beach vacations.

Romania and Bulgaria's access to Schengen Visas

Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen Area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, permitting stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, do note that visas issued before April 1 by these two countries won't grant access to the entire Schengen area. Travellers from non-Schengen countries may still undergo passport checks when travelling between different Schengen destinations. Visa issuance for Bulgaria and Romania can be processed on their respective official websites.
