New Girl recap: The top 5 moments from Road Trip / A Chill Day In

Let the bachelor and bachelorette party mayhem begin

New Girl aired three episodes on Tuesday, one being an encore showing of “Prince,” in honor of the late music legend. The others were new episodes, “Road Trip” and “A Chill Day In,” which center on Schmidt’s bachelor party and Cece’s bachelorette party, respectively.

Those parties were, um, unique. Schmidt decided he wanted to have a super manly goodbye to singledom, so he ditches his laid-back plans for Las Vegas, but all his tough guy efforts takes a terrible turn. Cece also ditches her night of relaxation, but her reasoning? She and Jess get really, REALLY high, and so wildness ensues.

Both parties result in sweet, genuine talks, as well as crazy, frenzied fights — but best of all, there’s a BIG development with Winston and Aly. With that, here are the top 5 moments from “Road Trip” and “A Chill Day.”

The fights. Not an angry exchange of words, this week’s episodes featured full-blown physical altercations. Schmidt and his groomsmen — note the glorious return of Rob Riggle as Big Schmidt, Nelson Franklin as Robby, and Fred Melamed as J. Cronkite Valley Forge — wind up at a bar in the middle of a desert and Schmidt provokes some locals by requesting ice in his drink. One thing leads to another and they get into a brawl, set to Katy Perry’s “Roar” with A+ slow-mo, where they lose terribly. You know who doesn’t lose terribly? Cece, Jess, and Aly. The trio end up in mall jail after attempting to steal the floor model of a $1,200 breadmaker to replace the one from Schmidt’s mother that they beat with a stick (the theft was Cece and Jess’ idea and poor Aly happened to get caught up in it). Cece loses it when a mall cop with an inflated sense of authority yells at Jess, so she starts throwing lost and found items everywhere, set to Mark Morrison’s “Return of the Mack” and also with A+ slow-mo. That creates the perfect distraction for them to make their getaway.

The pep talks. As the aforementioned shenanigans are going down, best man Nick and maid of honor Jess give pep talks to assuage any doubts that Schmidt and Cece have about themselves and their abilities to make good spouses. The reason why Schmidt had been making such a big deal about having a manly bachelor party was because he wanted to prove that he was tough enough to protect Cece. Nick reminds Schmidt of how he takes care of him, saying, “You’re going to be a great husband to Cece because you’re a great husband to me.” Then, in an ironic twist, Nick can’t deal with how “unmanly” he’s being. Cece has similar doubts about whether she’ll be able to watch over Schmidt (a passive aggressive note from his mother that came with the breadmaker caused a lot of these feelings, and led to the breadmaker beat down), but Jess says that couldn’t be further from the truth. “How can you say you don’t take care of people? You’ve been taking care of me my entire life. You’re fierce, and you’re strong, and you would stand up for anyone that you love. You’re like a big, scary mama bear.” And she proves that with the mall jail escape.

Cece and Jess’ high thoughts. Jess smokes weed about every 10 years, because she gets WEIRD. What follows when she and Cece smoke in the episode are some very high thoughts. “Hey, remember Coach,” Jess asks. “Where is he?” (Love whenever they give a shoutout to the former loftee.) She soon turns to the featured programming, Anne of Green Gables , naturally. “Like why are Gilbert’s lips so sexual,” Jess asks, another poignant question, to which Cece Responds, “I love Schmidt. You know I love Schmidt, but I would throw it all away for Gilbert. I would just ruin my life for that boy.” Then Cece weighs in with another key observation, something inspired by the two wearing socks on their hands. “The very fact that socks exist is proof that shoes don’t work,” she says. Jess chimes in, “My hearing is so good without my glasses on. I’m a superhear-o, just eating up sounds with my ear mouth.” It went on and on and on… in the best way.

Winston and Aly kiss!! Turns out Jess is not only funny when she’s high, but she also really confuses situations, like how she assumes that Aly and her boyfriend, Tripp, broke up when they really just had a bad fight. She was so convinced that they were done that she texts Winston, who returns with the bachelor party crew to confess his feelings. Jess spills the beans about Winston’s feelings to Aly, and that’s when she and Cece discover that Aly and Tripp are still together. Then Winston comes through the door and starts pouring his heart out. Aly has to stop him, and it gets weird, but then he congratulates her on her fifth anniversary of being a cop (or “Police Navidad,” something Tripp could care less about) and that’s when Aly kisses him! (I know I’m not the only one who squealed…) Aly still has yet to break up with Tripp, but one can hope the end of them is near, as great as the animal agent jokes are.

Nadia’s surprise. You might be wondering, where did sweet, innocent Jess get all that weed from? That’s compliments of Cece’s former roommate (and new romantic obsession of Robby) Nadia, who is VERY out there. She showed her, hmm, strong sense of spirit again when she had the bachelor and bachelorette groups kidnapped from the loft and brought onto a party truck full of strippers and disco lights. It’s the most actual partying that happens in the episode, and while it’s cute to see everyone paired up and having a good time, things do get weird, in traditional Nadia fashion. Case in point, she asks who wants the first tattoo, and Nick, who is apparently just as weird, immediately responds that he wants a shamrock on his knuckle. #SAME

So many to choose from this week! But here are some favorites…

• The bachelor party crew’s need to cheer everything, including the words “noteworthy” and “breadmaker.”
• Drunk Winston.
• Jess and Cece assuming that a postal worker is a stripper, and subsequently catcalling him.
• The floor model breadmaker playing “feel like baking love” over and over and over again because it has some kind of motion sensor. Jess and Cece don’t seem to understand that it has a motion sensor, or they are too high to deal.
• Jess pleading with Cece to let her tell Aly about Winston’s feelings for her.
• Nick’s genuine anger that he has to wait another 10 years for “High Jess.”

Earlier today, Liz Meriwether teased the latest New Girl twofer with the following tweet. And when she says “crazy,” she’s not just talking about that kiss between Winston and Aly. (Though its intensity is crazy enough that I hereby dub it The Kiss 2.0.)

There’s hyperbole at play here, but “Road Trip” and “A Chill Day In” certainly exist outside the New Girl norm. In addition to splitting up the roommates by gender, “Road Trip” pits windbreaker-clad, reverse-trike-renting city boys against the Mojave Desert’s Rottweiler-vest set. “A Chill Day In,” meanwhile, puts Jess and Cece out of their comfort zone by getting them all stoned and larcenous. (The bread maker thread works on two levels: baked and baking!)

These are all good things. The “Road Trip”/“A Chill Day In” two-parter is as structurally and formally daring as New Girl gets, written to fit the two-episodes-a-week itinerary of season five’s conclusion. The first episode lays out setups for punchlines delivered in the second: As soon as Jess pulls that bong out of her purse, her indecipherable text to Winston (“With Aly Trip on the squirts [Chicken leg emoji.]”) starts making sense. The episodes interlock with and mirror each other in incredibly satisfying ways, from their dueling bachelor party/bachelorette party setups to their slo-mo, incongruously soundtracked fight scenes. The “something crazy” Meriwether alluded to is an ambition that suits a typically modest sitcom in the twilight of its fifth season—and generates big laughs from unexpected places.

Because even when the show is toying around with the story beats of a Hangover- style “men behaving badly” romp or discovering that its sense of humor and rhythm are a pretty good match for a stoner comedy, the New Girl voice is there. In a High Noon standoff against desert-dwelling rough necks, Nick and Schmidt can’t help but point out that one of the roughnecks is a small child. (Words to live by: “You don’t touch Dirt Boy. Dirt Boy touches you.”) Facing the charges of shoplifting, consumption of a controlled substance, destroying an expensive wedding gift, costing Aly her job, and tarnishing the trust between Schmidt and Cece, Jess doesn’t miss the opportunity to make a groan-worthy “dough” pun. And the songs featured in the episodes (“Roar” and “Return Of The Mack”) exist in the very New Girl intersection between “anthems by female pop stars of the 2010s” and “the top requests at a middle-school dance in 1997.”

In terms of pure, giddy laughter, “A Chill Day In” (more like a wild Day out, amiright?) has the advantage on “Road Trip.” High Jess is likely too over-the-top to win points with the Pot Verisimilitude Police, but it doesn’t matter—Zooey Deschanel plays under-the-influence well, regardless of the influence. I’ve probably brought this up before, but it’s all in the old acting trick to appearing authentically wasted (to paraphrase Rob Delaney , “you’re trying not to seem that wasted), which “A Chill Day In” eventually turns into its driving force. That’s a big factor in Jess and Cece’s theft of the bread maker floor model, which combines energetic physical humor, the character’s stoned befuddlement, and a bothersome Bad Company parody in a highlight-reel-worthy set piece. I’ve watched the “Should we get snacks?” kicker four or five times now, and it’s still cracking me up.

Like the Reagan arc, “Road Trip” and “A Chill Day In” are examples of New Girl making the best of season five’s unique production and broadcast schedules. It’s a big swing from the show, from the corresponding commentary on the modern expectations for bride and groom (“Look, it’s 2016. She’s not looking for a strong husband—that’s not where I was going with this…”) to the rhyming “That’s what a husband does” and “Mama Bear” exchanges. The episodes are strong individual entries made stronger by airing on the same night, and though this sort of feat feels like a once-in-a-season feat, I hope it’s the kind of “crazy” that the next two week’s double features have in store.

Stray observations

• “Who’s that girl?” This week in New Girl pseudonyms, alter egos, and nicknames: “High Jess” makes her debut. Unfortunately, we won’t see her again for another 10 years.
• If you’re reading this immediately after “A Chill Day In,” you’re missing Fox’s memorial encore of “ Prince .” You should go watch that, then come back to this review. It’s okay. I’ll understand. Anything beautiful is worth getting hurt for. (That’s very well put. You know who said that? No? Prince.)
• There are some contingencies built in for times when “Road Trip” and “A Chill Day In” won’t be viewed on opposite sides of a brand new Grandfathered : Winston’s reiteration of his marital status, for example, or the reintroduction of Aly’s boyfriend Trip (Kal Penn) and his work in the field of animal actor representation. Then again, Jess and Cece didn’t meet Trip in “ Helmet ,” so it makes sense that his occupation would come up again tonight. (If I was Aly, I’m not sure I could stop myself from shoehorning Trip and his adorable clients into everyday conversation, either.)
• Where is Winston getting all of these wonderful sweaters, and can I get them, too?
• Yes, Schmidt’s bachelor party was supposed to be held in Tokyo, but something went wrong with the tickets: “Turns out Nick booked the trip on a website called Pricelive Dot Cob.”
• J. Kronkite Valley-Forge, unofficial Las Vegas spokesman: “Ah, Vegas: Truly a town in which to devour and be devoured.”
• The road house is frequented by customers who aren’t J. Kronkite’s or Nick’s favorite sort of white people: “My favorite kind of white people are redheads with high socks. Male or female.”
• When the groomsmen reminisce about lost loves, it brings up a bittersweet memory from Big Schmidt: “My ex. She was a pill, but when she used to go to second base on me, she was like Joe Morgan.”
• Schmidt’s slang terms for fighting suggest that he’s been spending some time in Marina Del Rey : “I got my ass wopmed out there. I got womped up and down the road.”
• After assuring Schmidt that he doesn’t have to be a man of the old world, Nick has to run away and do some old-world man stuff like shouting and kicking: “He’s been having some really nice moments today—and then kind of freaking out.”
• Marijuana: Jess likes “to call it Giggle Dirt.” I like to call it Anne Of Green Gables.
• High Jess’ every-10-years rotation is immediately backed up with a flashback pop-culture reference: “I’m gonna Jackass into these melons!”
• Nadia is Jess’ weed-and-kettle-corn dealer (and the dealer of “Chill Day In”’s ending), but she moves some more explosive product, too: “I have Russian nesting doll. Uh oh. It’s grenade.”
• A perfect sight gag: Jess: “Wait! Wait! Wait!” Cece: “What?! What?!” Jess: “You’ll do a lot more damage with this!”
• Colonel Fantastic in the Alfonso Cuarón movie? Don’t make Trip laugh. And don’t try pulling any Mickey Mouse shit with his owl client: “No, he won’t wear glasses. Because he’s not a library owl, he’s a horror movie owl!”
• A baby in a raincoat? “It’s like, just like a little baby meteorologist.”
• Winston actually had the perfect name for Aly’s “cop-a-versary,” but he went a different way: “My first choice, though, was ‘Police Navidad.’”

New Girl - Episode 5.17 - Review: "Road Trip"

This week with all-new back-to-back episodes of New Girl Schmidt decides on forgoing Tokyo for the bachelor party in favor of a road trip with the boys to Vegas...like men. Schmidt had a wild run in with "Toby!" and Schmidt decided it was time to take charge and by doing so got motorcycles for the ride to Vegas. Meanwhile, Winston is left reeling from a text from Jess stating that she's with Ally and her boyfriend setting up Cece's bachelorette party.

The bachelor party led by Rob Riggle were hilarious and added some serious comic relief to the situation. Even Robbie having last minute feelings for Cece worked because of how sincerely depressing the group reacted to it. The red neck "not my favorite type of white people" bar was pretty funny. Katy Perry on the jukebox. They were just knocking it out of the park with this sequence. Even Schmidt making matters worse with picking a fight was great. "Everyone knows real chili doesn't have beans."

I think everyone knew the reason Schmidt freaked out stemmed from his inability to protect Cece in that moment of road rage. It was a sincere moment that has been sorely missing from the ramp up to their wedding. Too many episodes have been spent on Jess's problems with Sam and not enough with if Cece and Schmidt can handle a long term relationship and all the problems that will come with that new journey. It was nice to see Schmidt own up to his flaws and try to be a better man to make it work. It was also pretty great to use Toby's technique at his own and just yell out "Schmidt!" repeatedly to scare the bar patrons, but it didn't work, and that fight was awesome! Literally one of the standout moments from this season and I'm glad the fight actually went down. No better way for the gang to learn, but remain triumphant with the fact that they went through with it. I think this was a defining moment for Schmidt and I'm glad we finally got some character development as this major arc comes to a climax.

Episode Synopsis:

After being emasculated in front of Cece, Schmidt insists on a manly bachelor party weekend in Vegas, but the road trip goes awry when the guys end up at a desert biker bar and he must put his newfound bravado to the test.

Nick & Schmidt-  We start the episode with Schmidt and Cece in the car and them talking about what Schmidt and the guys are going to do for his bachelor party. All of a sudden, Schmidt gets cut off by another driver and gets in a predicament, when the other driver starts yelling at him. After that traumatic experience, Schmidt decides that his bachelor party must be masculine. His plan is for the guys to go on a road trip to Las Vegas. The guys leave the loft and decide to rent a convertible for the trip, but unfortunately, the only convertible they have isn’t quite so masculine. While Nick and Schmidt continue talking to salesman, Winston greets the rest of the crew, which includes Schmidt’s Rabbi, his cousin, “Big Schmidt,” and Robbie. It’s funny seeing that Robbie was included because him and Schmidt were enemies for so long. Even though Robbie still has a crush on Cece, Schmidt now considers Robbie a friend. In the end, Nick and Schmidt pick motorcycles to drive, while Big Schmidt drives the rest of the guys in his minivan. While cruising along, Schmidt starts veering off the road and ends up “falling” off his bike. In the distance, there is a run down looking bar, and Nick and Schmidt decide that they should go get some drinks. They go inside and all hell breaks loose. All the people in the bar are super sketchy and Nick and Schmidt end up making some people mad by ordering drinks with ice in it. It’s just this whole back and forth about the drought in California and insulting beans and nuts. What a random conversation. As a result of all this, a bar fight is started in the back and of all the songs to have a fight to, they fight to Katy Perry’s “Roar.” It was such a weird mix-match of pop music with fighting, but that’s what made the whole situation comical. After all the guys have been beaten up pretty bad, Nick and Schmidt have this great conversation about Schmidt being a good husband for Cece. Schmidt is worried that he won’t be able to protect Cece, but Nick reassures him that he’s always there for him, so he’s already being a great husband. I really liked this moment because of course Nick never pours out his feelings, but since Nick and Schmidt have been friends for so long and are usually fighting about something stupid, they manage to truly care about each other, and I like seeing those endearing moments between them.

Winston – This whole time the road trip is happening, Winston is completely obsessed with his phone. He feels bad that he can’t go to the bachelorette party with the girls, since he technically was made Cece’s maid of honor, but Jess makes sure to inform him about everything going on. He gets a text from Jess saying that they’ve run into Aly, so that makes Winston super intrigued. He wonders if Aly is still dating Trip or if she’s single. At the bar, he decides to drink away the pain, and after helping Nick and Schmidt with the bar fight, he gets a text from Jess saying that Aly is indeed single! Winston can’t believe it and doesn’t know if Aly will feel the same way about him if he decides to ask her out. With encouragement from the rest of the guys, they all head back home, so that Winston can ask Aly out.

This episode was pretty hilarious. It was great seeing past characters and seeing them all bond together. I really enjoyed the bonding that Nick and Schmidt had throughout the episode and even though at this point, it could get annoying with Winston pining over Aly, I was happy when he got the text that she was single. There were some moments that were a little slow for me, but overall, it was a great episode.
