Hemingway’s Kenya with the longest running safari company

Oldest safari company at Masai Mara

Wildebeest at sunrise in the Masai Mara

The first safaris were primarily big game hunting expeditions across the African Savannah. The word safari , brought into Swahili from the Arabic, refers to a journey of any kind. It is the word still used today to express a trip by any means of transportation in East Africa. The word originated from the exchanges between nomads across the vastness of the African and Middle Eastern lands. It was this trading of goods that brought the word into the East African “lingua franca”. This connection is still tangible today in Zanzibar where the majority of the Muslim population are direct descendants of the Arab Omani traders of the 18th and 19th century.

The first safari expeditions

Frederick Selous

Frederick Selous

The first recorded safari as we know it today was a mere “journey” organised by Sir. William Cornwallis Harris in 1836 to observe African fauna. A well known Victorian traveler, Harris can be credited for the first accurate illustrations of African wildlife which he also viciously hunted after that first journey. Later on, Frederick Selous, who has a UNESCO-listed  Tanzanian hunting game reserve named after him, mimicked Harris in the hunt for elephants and collected samples of many specimens for European museums, most notably over 500 specimens for the Natural History Museum of London .

Those very first explorers were as much interested in documenting wildlife as they were in dominating it with their weapons, tracking wildlife in search of the rush of the kill. But they also pioneered a daily schedule and motion that has survived until today’s safaris.

Mornings started early, after the first rays of sunlight, and were followed by long treks in search of big game before the heat of the day sent the big game to hide in the shade. There were late lunches, quiet afternoons with a cup of tea and magical evenings under the stars sharing magnificent wild stories by the camp fire. Porters carried all the necessary comforts along the expedition’s movements and the camps lacked none of the Western advances of the time. Canvas bathtubs were fashioned to order and filled with hot water. Drinks were served cold. This is still the style of travel offered at most safari lodges and camps today, with two game drives, one in the early morning and one in the late afternoon split by lazy middays by the pool or the shade, adventure book in hand. Multi-course dinners, often in communal tables, are still the perfect excuse to share travel stories and tips surrounded by the sounds of nature. It is during those dinners, of which I have enjoyed many, that I have been recommended hidden lodges, private guides and luxury experiences that I followed up on.

The era of Hollywood

Hollywood's safari movies

Hollywood’s safari movies

Well-off aristocracy, celebrities and royalty came to Africa on hunting expeditions in search of the exhilarating rush of the kill, but they needed the able help of experienced guides who knew the terrain well and were experienced in the field. It was the sport of British colonialists and Hollywood celebrities that, when movies about Africa became popular, flocked to the mysterious land of the Big Five.

Some of those 20th century first guides were Donald Ker and Sydney Downey . Competing British big game hunters turned conservationists, they were both enlisted in the army and fought in Ethiopia during World War II. Having actively argued for game in the Mara before the war, they met at the bar of the Imperial Hotel in Addis Ababa when the war ended and decided to start what is today the longest running and oldest safari company in Africa. Ker & Downey Safaris was born on that day in 1941 as a travel company offering expeditions into East Africa.

Out of Africa

Out of Africa

Although they were both hunters at first, they swapped the big game kill for writers, directors and photographers and led them on the grandest African adventures ever. This is where they filmed famous movies like Hemingway’s The Macomber Affair, which was their first ever safari. This paved the way for dozens of other films. While most guides still focused on hunting expeditions, Ker & Downey took Hollywood actors and celebrities across the Masai Mara in search of the best scenes and captures. Along with their staff, they helped or even starred as stunt-doubles in the most famous movies shot in Africa such as  King Solomon’s Mines , Karen Blixen’s Out of Africa , John le Carre’s the Constant Gardener , Cry Freedom or Gorillas in the Mist . They brushed shoulders with actors of the caliber of Grace Kelly, Meryl Streep, Clark Gable and John Wayne.

Ker & Downey’s work also expanded into documentaries and scientific safaris with National Geographic and they slowly favoured observation safaris and conservation efforts over hunting expeditions. It was this focus away from killing wildlife as a sport that, when the big ban on hunting was introduced in 1977 in Kenya, left them largely unaffected.

A refined way of traveling in the wildest of surroundings

Safari drinks chest

The travel style portrayed and enjoyed by the characters in these safari movies, most famously illustrated in  Out of Africa  by hunter Denys Finch Hatton when he refused to travel without his fine china, crystal and Mozart’s recordings on the gramophone, pigeonholed safaris into a class of refined travel that only the wealthiest could afford. It also gave these expeditions a standing and magic that has survived until today. No matter how remote or isolated a lodge is, none of the comforts have been spared.

Sitting on our comfortable sofa in Ker & Downey’s Amboseli Conservancy in the south of Kenya, I enjoy a quiet afternoon break between game drives reading an adventure book, sipping on rosé and munching on fine cheese and crackers. The entire tented camp can be packed like Ikea furniture into a specially designed truck that is awaiting our departure. The bed, with iron frame and proper mattress, the flush toilets and all the furniture take the crew half a day to assemble or disassemble and usually travels between camps with the guests on the longer trips. So you always sleep in the same tent and bed, just like those early explorers used to do. Only that, today, the porters have been replaced by trucks and the roads are better paved.

Chilling at Amboseli camp

The feasts that we enjoy in the evenings, complete with sundowners and imported wines, are cooked by the traveling chef on a makeshift charcoal oven or directly on the coals at camp. The water for drinking is brought over from Nairobi but washing is done with water from the river that is treated in the purifying system installed in the truck. The raw foods to whip up each meal are sourced from Nairobi based on the guests preferences, and stored in a freezer powered by solar panels. The water for the showers is heated on the coals every time you want a soak. At night, oil lamps illuminated the fascinating storytelling , while the sounds of the hyena alerting of a leopard or the monkeys scared of a lion could be heard in the distance.

Drinks selection on safari

Although luxury lodges with pools, designer infused decor and the finest china have sprung up since Hatton’s tantrums, the exclusivity and feeling of being one with nature in a private tented camp expedition preserves the magic those early explorers felt. With nobody else in sight other than you and your party, the bush and wildlife are yours to savour at your own pace. After dinner, drives, stargazing or even running after spring hares are all possibilities, you just need to ask your Masai guide, your link to an ancestral land.

Masai community members Amboseli

Masai community members Amboseli

In Amboseli, where Howard Saunders , our guide and soon to be friend, partner of Ker & Downey Safaris and founding member of the Shackleton & Selous Society , Matito and Solomon, our two Masai guides and active proponents of the Lion Guardians program, lead us through the private conservancy area belonging to their Masai community. In three days we did not see any other car other than the avid wildlife observers from the Lion Guardians who came to check up on a lioness that had been hurt.

One afternoon, as I am testing the drone “follow me” feature, I lose control and crash it onto a tall acacia tree. Worried that I have lost it forever in the thick thorny bushes, one of the Masai spots it up in the tree branches. An entire operation unfolds with all the Masai members coming to the rescue. There is a long period of diagnosis where all ideas are considered. I observe, amused, at the various ideas floating around and I regain the trust: nobody considers loss as a possibility. Two hours, one truck, one ladder and a long machete hacking exercise later, one of the Masai warriors has managed to make his way up the 6 meter tree and has brought the drone down. Slightly scratched but largely intact, I recover my flying camera with a clear message: Impossible is nothing in Africa.

My drone stuck in the trees

My drone stuck in the trees

This must have been what those early explorers felt, the idea that this vast continent, so unexplored, so rough yet so magnificent, teeming with wildlife and nature and flooded by the Milky Way , had to be experienced on foot, on the land, sleeping under the canvas of a tent.

Legends & Legacies

Donald ker & sydney downey.

The longest-existing safari outfitter in the world

Donald Ker & Syd Downey teamed up to create Ker and Downey Safaris Ltd., a Kenyan company at the forefront of the move away from hunting and towards photographic safaris.

oldest safari company

Donald Ker was a famous Kenyan white hunter, safari guide and conservationist of British descent. Donald Ker was born in England in 1905 and when he was six years old his family moved to a coffee plantation in Kenya (1911). He took to hunting early in his life. When he was eight, Donald’s father taught him to shoot and at 16 he went on his first elephant hunt with Mike Cottar, son of the renowned hunter Charles. Trained by the Cottars in tracking and bush skills, Donald became a ‘learner hunter’ on their epic safaris, which would regularly involve hundreds of porters and camp staff.

When WWII broke out in 1939 Ker enlisted with British army where he became a scout and partook in campaigns against the Italians in the Ethiopian theater. After the city of Addis Ababa was reclaimed by the British, he met Downey at a bar, and made plans to form their own safari company after the war. Shortly after, they announced their decision during an "impromptu meeting of the East African Professional Hunters" Association.

He is also known for leading two long expeditions with Edgar Monsanto Queeny for the American Museum of Natural History which resulted in the production of several nature documentaries and in Ker's own dedication to conservation.

SYDNEY DOWNEY

Sydney Downey was a British-Kenyan white hunter and safari pioneer. Always known as Syd, he learned the trade of guiding safari hunts from an older generation of white hunters, including his early mentor Philip Percival.

Syd was born in 1905 on an Argentinian ranch where his British father was the manager. It was so large that Syd and his siblings rarely left until they went to school in England in 1914. Syd moved to Africa in 1924, a continent he would leave just three times in his life. He became a professional hunter in 1930 and spent much of his time in the Maasai Mara. He was described as “possibly the greatest hunter after Frederick Selous” – a reputation that earned him an enviable client list of royals, Maharajas and film stars.

Downey was born to a British expatriate family ranching cattle in Argentina. He spent most of his early childhood in Argentina, leaving the country for England to attend secondary school. Upon graduating school he sailed to Kenya, where he found a job working on a coffee plantation outside of Nairobi.

Downey became a professional hunter in 1933 when he joined Leslie Tarlton’s Safariland. In the early days with the company, Downey worked with Philip Percival on several safaris as his "second hunter." Percival quickly became Donwey's mentor. Downey soon met Ronald Ker, another Kenyan hunter with whom he developed a rivalry. During the 1930s Ker and Downey were known for having opened up much of the Masai Mara to hunting. However, both hunters took a break from their trade when World War II broke out in 1939, joining the British effort in East Africa against the Italians.

During World War II Syd joined the intelligence corps, tracking Italian movements into Sudan and Ethiopia, where he was captured and imprisoned. On his release he met Donald Ker and agreed to set up a safari company in Kenya. Syd was always drawn to photographic safaris; when he died in 1983, a friend said that “he would have preferred to be remembered not for his legendary skill with a gun or the immense pleasure he gave so many clients, but for his efforts to conserve wildlife and preserve the beauties of the environment.”

As the war in Africa was winding down the British successfully ousted the Italians from Ethiopia, taking back the city of Addis Ababa. It was at this time that Ker and Downey met again, during an "impromptu meeting of the East African Professional Hunters’ Association," in an Addis Ababa bar. During their meeting Ker pitched Downey on the idea of going into business together as soon as the war ended. When the war ended the pair kept their promises and founded Ker and Downey Safaris. Their first paying safari was The Macomber Affair, starring Gregory Peck and Joan Bennett. They hired some of the most well known East African hunters including Harry Selby.

KER & DOWNEY SAFARIS LIMITED

Like so many great ventures, Ker & Downey Safaris was born from a chance encounter. Donald Ker and Syd Downey, two big game hunters from Kenya, had been fighting with the British in Ethiopia shortly before the fall of Addis Ababa in 1941. Syd had just been released by the Italians and was celebrating at a local hotel when he bumped into Donald Ker. With one car and a lot of bravura, the pair made a plan to establish “the best safari company the world has ever known”.

Ker and Downey was eventually created after the war in 1946, making it now the world's longest running safari company. Offshoots of the original company were set up in Tanzania, Botswana and the United States. The original main partners were Jack Block, Sydney Downey (Syd) and Donald Ker. Jack Block who owned the Norfolk and Stanley Hotel, Nairobi was the business brain who saw it as his role to keep Downey and Ker out on safari for as many days as possible. The Botswana operation was set up by new partner Harry Selby (hunter), who joined after the huge success of Robert Ruark's Horn of the Hunter which was based on a safari they took together.

Other luminaries at K&D over the years:

JOHN SUTTON: One of the ‘greats’ of Africa’s legendary hunter-guides, John Sutton joined Ker & Downey in 1951, and led the company through the heady transition to photographic safaris during the 1970s. Raised on a farm near Nakuru, John spent much of his childhood on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains, where he became a keen observer of the complex relationship and changing dynamics between wildlife, the land and the people. His insight – widely sought throughout his life – led to a firm conviction that wildlife is a national resource whose proper management is essential to its survival. A council member of the East African Wild Life Society, John worked closely with a wide range of conservation-oriented organisations and was a trustee of the African Wildlife Foundation. Pivotal to the establishment of Ker & Downey’s operations in both Botswana and Tanzania, John’s clients included Prince Charles and Princess Anne, Jimmy Stewart and Laurens van der Post. John worked on many of Hollywood’s classic African films, including Mogambo and Out of Africa, for which he famously ran a tented camp for 340 cast and crew.

DAVID WILLIAMS: David guided his first safari with Syd Downey in 1959, but did not join the company until 1964. Born in Eldoret in western Kenya in 1931, he worked on locust control in the north of Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and the Ogaden. Returning to farm in Kenya, he was nominated to the East African Professional Hunters Association in 1960 and hunted in Tanzania and Uganda before joining Ker & Downey. On one of his first K&D assignments, David worked on the film Sammy Going South with Edward G. Robinson. During his long professional career, David led safaris in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Southern Sudan, Zaire and Botswana. His clients included the Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos, the film star Stewart Granger, and the King of Bhutan. In later life, David concentrated on photographic safaris – with a particular interest and affection for the beautiful birdlife of East Africa.

ALLAN EARNSHAW: Allan has been with Ker & Downey Safaris for over 35 years, becoming a director in 1982 and taking over the chairmanship of the company from John Sutton in 1997. Born in Kenya, Allan is the fourthgeneration son of two family lines, one of which arrived in 1896 to build the ‘Lunatic Line’, as the railway from Mombasa to Kisumu would become known. Allan is credited with helping to develop the mobile photographic safari model that is so popular at K&D today. He has led safaris to many of the farthest-flung parts of Africa, including Zakouma National Park in Chad and the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia. But his great love today is conservation, and putting back into the bush what it has given him. Allan has been instrumental in developing Kenya’s wildlife conservancy movement, and sits on the boards of the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association and the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association. He has also served on the board of the Kenya Wildlife Service, and is the current chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Trust.

I have see that you point out 10 of the Best African Safari Tour Operators that is Great but there is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris ltd, website https://www.footslopestours.com/ They organize the best private custom safari, honeymoon, Kilimanjaro climbing, hiking and trekking mountain family holidays in Tanzania. They have experienced safari guides and staffs are best in the industry.

In essence it’s a tough pick for the best safari companies as best is relative and times change. Moreover, companies evolve for better and unfortunately others for worse. There are also local based companies that have competence and overall good service.

Check out https://www.alphadeantoursandsafaris.com/ as well as https://www.africamagicalsafaris.com/index.php

' src=

It would also be nice to consider Kenya-based safari companies like Explorer Kenya Tours and Travel for honeymooners safaris, photography safaris and Kenya wildlife safaris. See them on http://www.explorerkenya.com .

' src=

This is not a definitive, or updated list of the world’s ”best” safari companies. I think A&K should surely make the proper list, along with & Beyond. But someone has rightfully pointed out that these companies are quite expensive. A few years ago, I enjoyed a fabulous African Safari in Kenya with Shoor Safaris ( http://www.shoortravel.com/ ) at much cheaper rates using the same properties I was being offered by a top US operator. So do shop around and book wisely.

' src=

Thanks for your comment Carol. Sure, it’s not a “definitive” list. At the end of the day, it all depends on what YOU’re looking for. Choose wisely and “safari njema”! 😉

' src=

Based on the dates you posted the article, that was true but now things have really changed. Those tour companies that are not keeping up with the advancement of technology especially online marketing are being overtaken by smaller operators who have invested heavily in online marketing.

' src=

Most of the companies listed above are very expensive. I found a newer tour operator based in the US that runs their trips out of an office in Tanzania. They where almost half the price of the quote I got from Micato and 35% less than Thomsons. Our trip was great. I guess that the others charge more because they have a name. Anyway, check them out and see if they can do your trip cheaper http://www.etripafrica.com .

Good Safari.

' src=

I have gone through the list of safari companies listed and while it is true that they do offer great services, I am not sure that they are the top 10. There are a number of companies operating regionally and internationally that offer just as good or better services.

Another thing is there are some good companies who have had their names sullied by one disgruntled client over the most minor issue. Tour guides are humans and something like a flat tire is something that is sometimes unavoidable. However, some clients since they book these tours way in advance a few things could have happened in the months leading up to the safari making them wish they hadn’t booked. Take the world economic crisis, a client books his safari one or two years in advance only to lose a job. So reviews by clients should be taken in totality not from one disgruntled client.

' src=

Hello Michael.

I have seen the list of the top 10 safari companies doing safaris in Africa. In Uganda you have listed Volcanoes only. There is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Advantage Safaris ltd, website http://www.advantage-safaris.com . They organize the best birdwatching, gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking and family holidays in both Uganda and Rwanda. The guides and safari drivers employed by Advantage Safaris ltd are the best in the industry.

' src=

All safari goers should be a little wary of the ‘group style’ safaris on offer. Remember that you are trying to get close to wildlife and be sensitive as well as be educated. Larger groups, of say 16 people or more, in numerous vehicles can find this a little difficult. Large groups are often led by ‘an expert’ with driver/guides in the other vehicles. Whilst this keeps the cost per head down some the overall ‘life time experience ‘ can get a little diluted by sharing one so called ‘expert’ between 16-20 group members.

Tanzania is a wonderful safari destination but you cannot beat a small group of up to 8 visitors being guided by two excellent guides in two well equipped vehicles. Guides that know the back roads and want to explore.

Camp in remote locations, don’t be surrounded by cement in a lodge. It costs more but these basic rules can get a visitor closer to that dream vacation.

' src=

I agree that it is impossible to limit the world’s best safari companies down to a list of 10, especially when each safari company is focused on a different region and/or type of trip (adventure, family, honeymoon, luxury, etc.). In many cases it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

' src=

Thanks for the feedback, you definitely have a point here. Of course, they can't possibly make a "real" top 10 out of the thousands of safari companies out there. But then again, how would you do it? Did you check out their methodology? Basically, it is based on surveys that follow specific categories: education, sustainability, quality of service and spirit of adventure.

About the "trip of a lifetime" experience. This goal should always be on top of the list, totally agree with you. The question is: are they all going for it? I don't think so. I have read a few stories where people were really not well catered for. In my opinion, there are always companies out there that are looking for a quick buck no matter what… even if it has to be at the expense of their clients.

Not quite sure what you're trying to imply about the recession bit. Did you read that? Possible but am not aware of it.

' src=

Hello Michael,

Interesting topic that is being discussed here. I must say though that the premise of NG a bit of an awkward one is. 'Delivering a trip of a lifetime the first time'?? In my opinion a safari outfitter should ALWAYS try to achieve this goal the first time. Now NG suggests that there are a number of operators out there that are not doing their utmost to accommodate clients the first time and that they will only do so in times of recession.

I therefore dare to say that this survey is absolute nonsense, as NG will not have the possibility to survey 100's of operators. Why? Because they have other things to do than being a consumer watchdog on safaris. I am not implying that the mentioned companies are no good, I am just saying that out of all the thousands of companies selling safaris, you can not just make a list of 10.

What do you think yourself Michael?

Cheers from Holland.

“K&D” : The Original Ker & Downey Safaris

In late 2016, Andreas Fox was invited to join The Original Ker & Downey Safaris as an associate guide. Acknowledged as the world’s oldest safari company, established in 1946, “K&D” has a reputation as one of the most respected safari outfitters. Famous for the best luxury mobile safaris, K&D guides have been taking their guests and fully-kitted camps across the continent in search of wilderness, wildlife, cultures and one-in-a-lifetime experiences.

KD mess tent

Like so many great ventures, Ker & Downey Safaris was born from a chance encounter. Donald Ker and Syd Downey, two big game hunters from Kenya, had been fighting with the British in Ethiopia shortly before the fall of Addis Ababa in 1941. Syd had just been released by the Italians and was celebrating at a local hotel when he bumped into Donald Ker. With one car and a lot of bravura, the pair made a plan to establish “the best safari company the world has ever known”.

It was not until January 1946 that Syd and Donald, newly discharged from the army, took out their first safari. They were hired to run a camp in the Maasai Mara for the production of  The Macomber Affair , the United Artists blockbuster starring Gregory Peck and Joan Bennett. It was the beginning of a long love affair with Hollywood, which would see K&D outfit some of the biggest films ever to come out of Africa.

In 1962, shortly before Kenya’s Independence, Ker & Downey spread its wings to Botswana, with Harry Selby and a couple of other guides offering safaris in this ‘new’, uncharted corner of Africa. Through the 60s and 70s, the company continued to grow – extending its reach across southern Africa, east to the jungles of Congo, and north into the deserts of Ethiopia and Sudan. By 1977, when hunting was officially banned in Kenya, K&D had transformed itself into the leading provider of customised mobile photographic safaris in Africa.

Today, Ker & Downey is celebrated as the longest-existing safari outfitter in the world, and the standard-bearer for unsurpassed luxury in some of its last great wild places. So successful has the K&D name been that it has been brazenly borrowed by a number of copycat companies in Africa and the West. Yet to this day, no one has come close to emulating the luxurious standards, the rich experiences, or the peerless guiding of “The Original Ker & Downey Safaris”.

KD Safaris

In K&D’s 70 years, it has played host to royalty, outfitted camps for Oscar-winning films such as Out of Africa and played crucial roles in conservation initiatives, particularly in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo ecosystems.

Prince Charles on Safari

The invitation to join the company is part of K&D’s efforts to foster a new generation of expert private guides. A huge honour and sign of confidence, Andreas is now able to offer clients safaris with K&D’s expertise and luxurious camps, allowing yet further exclusivity and access to wilderness.

From humble beginnings we have, over the years, fashioned a legendary reputation as pioneers in the South African game and hunting industry. Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CVS) has been operating professionally for almost 50 years making us the oldest safari company in South Africa.

A Family History

The Vermaak family settled in South Africa in 1672 and very quickly developed a passion for the great outdoors. They were hunters and keen outdoorsmen and because they ensured that these traditions were passed on to future generations, we can proudly say that almost 350 years on the Vermaak hunting legacy continues!

``You don't get to be the best by being the oldest; You get to be the oldest by being the best!``

CVS has a small, effective team that takes care of every detail of your safari. CVS only contracts the best and most experienced Professional Hunters – all of whom have a minimum of 10 years’ experience as full time guides. Our PHs, headed up by Senior PH Clive Curtis, are more than hunters – they are knowledgeable about all fauna and flora, they are passionate about what they do and spending time with them in the field is informative, fun and rewarding. Our trackers are highly skilled and dedicated gentlemen. They were the first trackers in South Africa to be recognized as full field members of PHASA – a testimony to their skills and professionalism.

Choosing Safaris: Private Conservancies or National Parks?

Choosing Safaris: Private Conservancies or National Parks?

A safari trip is always a lifetime experience. These are the key differences between private conservancies and national parks.

I will never get bored of doing a safari. This is one of the most beautiful travel experiences there is, and no matter which safari country I visit or which park I decide to go to, going on a safari always feels like the very first time.

Masai Mara, Serengeti, Kruger, or Etosha. These are all safari hotspots to visit. However, while there are sections that have public access to the national park, other premises inside the park are fully secluded from tourism and are protected by privates. These are called conservancies, and when you do a safari, you get the option to decide if you want to visit a private conservancy or stay at the public premises of the national park.

Photographing elephants from a bunker

I visited the Zimbabwean private conservancies at Hwange National Park and Mana Pools National Park that belong to Wilderness. This is one of the oldest safari companies in the world, and unlike most safari operators you will find, they only operate on their own private conservancies all around Africa.

Yes, visiting a private conservancy is expensive, very expensive! Still, I want to break down my experience with Wilderness and give a detailed guide on what is the biggest difference between visiting a private conservancy and the public areas of a national park.

Arrival on a wilderness air flight in Zimbabwe

Private Conservancies: Intimate Encounters

A safari trip is already an exclusive experience for many people, yet one of the most rewarding experiences in a lifetime. People from all over the world flock to the key parks of Africa to experience this, and sometimes, overtourism might affect this magical moment.

Private conservancies offer an intimate and exclusive setting for wildlife enthusiasts seeking encounters with Africa’s iconic species. With limited visitor numbers, these conservancies provide a sense of seclusion, allowing for unobstructed views of wildlife without the crowds.

Flexibility and Off-Road Adventures

One of the defining features of private conservancies is the flexibility in safari activities. Unlike national parks, conservancies often allow off-road excursions, granting you the opportunity to track elusive predators or follow the path of a majestic elephant. This flexibility ensures a personalized and immersive wildlife experience.

Immersive Luxury: Accommodations in Harmony with Nature

Beyond the wildlife, private reserves often boast luxurious accommodations seamlessly integrated into the natural surroundings. Picture yourself staying in a safari lodge, where the line between your room and the wilderness blurs. This immersive experience enhances the overall journey, offering comfort without compromising on the thrill of being in the heart of untamed landscapes.

Private conservancies are not huge Hilton resorts or Marriott lodges. Wilderness camps, for example, adapt their architecture to the environment in ways I didn’t expect. Colors, design, and the whole idea of being in the wild get fully embraced by them.

In such a unique environment, it was normal to have elephants drinking water from our pool or observing hippos roaming just a few meters away from our balconies.

The waterhole in front of Wilderness Linkwasha in Hwange National Park is one of the best I've ever seen.

Conservation at its Core

Supporting local conservation efforts is an inherent aspect of private conservancies. Many operate with a commitment to preserving the natural habitat and wildlife, contributing to the sustainability of ecosystems. By choosing a private conservancy, you actively participate in conservation initiatives, making your safari an ethical and impactful journey.

For example, Wilderness supports several projects all across Africa that focus on the conservation of endangered species. Every safari camp from Wilderness has books and information about these projects and how your visit is supporting wildlife to survive.

National Parks: Grandeur on a Grand Scale

National parks characterize the vastness and grandeur of Africa’s untamed landscapes. These protected areas showcase an abundance of wildlife in these unique ecosystems. There is nothing like the first time you can get a feeling of how vast Serengeti is.

If your safari dreams involve witnessing the sheer scale of the animal kingdom in its natural habitat, your budget plays a big role in the decision you make, and you don’t mind having a few dozens cars on the peak times around you; a national park may be your ideal choice.

Iconic Landmarks and Diverse Habitats

National parks are the epitome of vast, untouched landscapes, showcasing the magic of Africa’s diverse ecosystems. If your safari dream involves witnessing the sheer scale of the animal kingdom in its natural habitat, a national park might be your ideal choice. These protected areas are expansive, providing a canvas for nature to paint its most magnificent portraits.

Landmarks, Diversity, and Dramatic Habitats

National parks are often home to iconic landmarks and a variety of ecosystems. From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the lush wetlands of the Okavango Delta, each park unfolds a different chapter in the story of the wild. The sheer diversity of habitats ensures a dynamic safari experience, offering a mix of landscapes and wildlife encounters.

Infrastructure and Accessibility: A Seamless Safari Experience

National parks come with established infrastructure, making your safari experience more structured and accessible. Accommodations range from comfortable lodges to well-maintained campsites. Ranger-guided tours and maintained roads enhance ease of exploration, providing a smooth and comprehensive safari adventure.

Conservation on a Grand Scale

Preserving the immense landscapes within national parks is a monumental task. These areas are vital for the conservation of entire ecosystems and the protection of numerous species. Visiting a national park contributes directly to these conservation efforts, ensuring that these vast, untouched spaces remain sanctuaries for wildlife.

Choosing Your Wild Journey: What Feels Right for You?

Personal experience in a private reserve or are you enticed by the vast landscapes of national parks? It all comes down to what makes your heart beat faster.

If you love the idea of having the wild all to yourself, where fewer people mean more personal wildlife moments, then a private reserve is your scene. Imagine tracking animals off the regular paths, following them on their journeys, and making a real impact on nature conservation while you’re at it.

On the flip side, if you’re all about big, untouched landscapes and seeing a bit of everything, a national park might be more your vibe. These places have iconic landmarks, diverse habitats, and everything set up nice and easy for you – from comfy stays to guided tours.

Would I go to a private conservancy again?

Yes! My trip to Zimbabwe with Wilderness was a dreamlike experience. It was a luxurious trip I can imagine people doing on their honeymoon or a very special date. The attention to detail and the service of this company made me feel completely different. After doing over 50 safaris in 10 African countries, this was by far one of the most memorable trips.

So what does a vintage safari experience look like?

The concept of a vintage safari is connected to a nostalgic view of the past, the classic old-age ‘golden era’ of low impact and high quality journeys of discovery, disconnected from the world that we know, whilst offering a greater connection to our natural world. And the beauty of so many of the vintage safari experiences, is that they offer a true reflection of the spirit of adventure, with most vintage safari camps ascribing to a strong ethos of low environmental impact, and still allowing for the comforts we have all become accustomed to.

With a growing desire amongst adventurous souls eager to seek out unique encounters or landscapes, the vintage safari experience generally takes travellers off the beaten track into areas where fewer people traverse, in many cases offering pristine wilderness experiences, surprising wildlife encounters, and in some cases a truly rustic and authentic experience of the destination itself.

It is difficult to get much more remote than Apoka Safari Lodge . Located in the remote Kidepo Valley where Uganda meets the untamed vastness of Central Africa, Akopa Safari Lodge is reflective of those timeless vintage safari images – vast golden grasslands, jagged hills, soft tepia glowing light and a landscape dotted with wildlife. With 10 expansive rooms built in amongst a rocky outcrop, the camp is symbolic of the space the landscape provides and takes advantage of ensuring open views of the savannahs. Handcrafted by local builders, Apoka Safari Lodge has fully embraced the concept of reflecting everything local with extensive interiors all made by local craftsmen. Wildlife is surprisingly diverse with an estimated 86 mammal species and a remarkable 463 plus bird species including 58 different raptors. Apoka provides travellers with an extraordinarily remote and vintage safari experience and those that make the journey here are guaranteed to be rewarded many times over.

Immersed within nature under canvas

With majority of the vintage camp offerings located alongside and within fairly monumental wildlife landscapes, the concept of being immersed within nature under canvas is emphasized by the feeling of allowing the natural outside world in. Scents of wild herbs and the well-known aroma of hot dust or freshly fallen rain permeating through the canvas and gauze, the echoing sounds and chorus of the lions roar or elephants rumble in the distance as it carries across the plains, or the glimpses of the overhead twinkle of the starlit skies – vintage camps have been designed to ensure all the senses – the sights, the sounds, the smells, the touch and the tastes – are elevated and enhance the overall experience of the surroundings. One could say that vintage camps provide as close to being a part of Africa’s natural rhythm and pulse as possible. And let’s not forget the seductive intimacy that comes with a few large tents sitting within miles and miles of an abundant wildlife filled landscape.

Mara Toto positions itself squarely in the heart of magnificent predator country, and the camp’s traversing rights of both Mara North Conservancy and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve give guests the flexibility to explore far and wide in search of arguably the finest wildlife sightings on earth. The magic of Mara Toto is in its’ revisiting of the past, with the design of the camp drawing from Africa’s original explorers’ and designed for those in search of East Africa’s romantic safari era. “When I designed Mara Toto Camp, a perfect camp from which to enjoy your Masai Mara safari, it was based on an original 19th-century styled expedition camp with light canvas and high apex tents, supported by huge gum-poles. Right along the river’s edge and under some of the most spectacular ebony trees, its position creates a hidden haven to retire between exciting safari drives. This small 8-bed camp is ideal for families, or small parties, explorers, adventurers and photographers. Nearby leopard and lion’s calls are often heard from this safari camp.” says Dereck Joubert, CEO of Great Plains Conservation.

Private and Homely

For many of the vintage camps, space and seclusion come naturally. With a smaller number of tents or rooms, vintage camps by nature offer a lot more exclusivity, allowing for a more personalised view and experience of Africa and its wildlife and cultures with the true meaning of space encompassed in the design of the tents and camp itself.

Little Chem Chem located alongside Lake Burunge in Tanzania is the quintessential East African safari camp with six luxury vintage style tents set amidst ancient baobabs, and where as the first rays of dawn wash across the tented suites, you will understand why they affectionately refer to Little Chem Chem as their ‘sunrise camp’. The vintage-style camp sits within a vital migration corridor and is not only a haven for guests travelling there, but over time, both trust and respect have allowed the area to become somewhat of a haven for the magnificent big tuskers that call the concession home.

Silence, Seclusion and environmentally friendly

There is a purity and clarity in the silence and seclusion that comes with being on a vintage safari experience. Choosing to disconnect from the busy distractions of our modern world and immerse oneself in the tranquility of nature. In Zambia , a pioneering eco-property in the South Luangwa has taken the concept of silence and seclusion to a new level by including silent safari electric vehicles with a fully-run solar powered camp. Green Safaris have partnered with legendary guide Jacob Shawa and have created a vintage safari experience overlooking the Luangwa river where each of their tents melt away into the stillness and greenery of the surrounding trees, creating an enhanced natural privacy and peace. As one of the most favoured walking landscapes in Southern Africa, Shawa Luangwa also allows you to step out on foot and slow down to nature’s pace… absorbing the sights, sounds and smells with every footstep in an untouched wilderness where it is easy to feel like you are the only inhabitants of this wildlife rich oasis.

In the heart of South Africa’s Sabi Sands Reserve lies Notten’s Bush Camp . Where most lodges in the area are trending towards a more contemporary aesthetic, this family-run camp exudes a more “classic” vibe. Whether on game drives looking for the Big 5, dining in the boma or watching wildlife pass by the lounge, you’ll “feel at home” while on safari at Notten’s.

oldest safari company

The way Onduli Ridge is nestled among a ridge of granite boulders, you would think the lodge has been there for a long time. In fact, it’s Damaraland’s newest lodge. The lodge as a whole is largely open air, meaning the surrounding landscape takes center stage. But the accommodations are far from basic – it’s no doubt the region’s premier safari accommodation.

The spirit of adventure

For those with a greater spirit of adventure and wanting to find an elegant blend of both the old and the new, Selinda Explorers in Botswana is one of the finest examples of an intimate, refined and stylish vintage camp. With just four meru-style tents, Selinda Explorers has a heavy focus on walking and canoeing – allowing for travellers to really grasp the old-age concept of exploration from a bygone era whilst embracing the concept of exclusivity and seclusion.

Little Vundu , located in Mana Pools , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and world renowned wildlife destination, offers an ideally situated intimate vintage camp experience for adventurous up-close encounters with unbeatable guiding. Here travellers will have the opportunity to see the famous Dynasties painted wolves up close and personal on foot and canoe the majestic Zambezi River, one of Africa’s longest and oldest rivers. Mana Pools is the ultimate destination for those with an adventurous spirit who are eager to get out on foot with top class private guides.

Similarly Camp Hwange in Hwange National Park Zimbabwe combines a distinct vintage camp experience with an emphasis on top level guiding. A large focus here is walking amongst Hwange’s famous gentle giants with the most knowledgeable, passionate and charismatic guides ensuring that your safari is more about your up close encounters with wildlife than the luxury level of your accommodation.

The Top 10 African Safari Tours

Scott Bay is a magazine editor specializing in travel, architecture, and gear. He was previously an assistant editor at Travel + Leisure . His work has also appeared in Wired , Architectural Digest , Wallpaper , Robb Report , Saveur , Daily Beast , and more.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

A safari tops most of Travel + Leisure readers' bucket lists — a trip that many spend a lifetime daydreaming about , saving for, and eventually splurging on. On this type of adventure, travelers pull out all of the stops and have high expectations. One of the best ways to have that dream trip live up to expectations is to hire one of the best safari outfitters, as voted by the discerning readers of T+L.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The safari companies favored by T+L readers owe much of their success to the talented advisors, who get to know their clients so they can create truly customized trips. "We couldn't have worked with a better group of people," one reader said of No. 5 winner Travel Beyond. "They were friendly, efficient, informative, and made sure our entire trip went smoothly. We never had a care."

Each safari outfitter also displays a deep connection to the national world and conservation efforts . Readers felt that No. 10 andBeyond particularly excelled in this area: "They have an excellent commitment to local communities, protecting wildlife and the environment." Another reader said of No. 9 Wilderness Safaris, "Their commitment to local communities and protecting wildlife is outstanding."

Read on to see the full list of T+L readers' picks for the best safari outfitters — all of which not only make spotting the Big Five easy but also arrange unparalleled perks and accommodations.

1. Micato Safaris

This company has been voted onto T+L's list of the world's best safari outfitters every year since the awards' inception — and for good reason. The family-run business has deep roots in Kenya, and its owners' love for the country (and continent) is evident in the way they operate. Each itinerary, whether private or with a group, is tailored to be the most luxurious, comfortable, and exciting adventure possible. Readers couldn't say enough kind words about their recent trips. "Never met tour guides or staff that were so friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and the locations and the culture," wrote one reader. "They seemed to have a sixth sense for anticipating our needs. It was really something." A few more touted Micato's reputation, with one saying, "Simply the best safari outfitter in Africa. Bar none."

What to Wear on Safari

Safari clothing should be comfortable and casual—suffice it to say, any fine jewellery should be left at home. And while it’s not actually necessary to dress like an old safari hand, you won’t feel out of place if you do since that’s the everyday attire of the locals—i.e., the present-day “old safari hands” whose great-grandparents moved to Africa from England and points beyond. Plus, there are valid reasons to do so.

Wearing white increases your visibility to wildlife, while bright colours, particularly red, can frighten animals. (It is said that lions fear red because it is the colour worn by the Maasai, who hunt lions as a part of their coming of age rituals.)

Watching Rhino during African Safari

Khaki, olive, tans and browns increase your chances of good game viewing (particularly on a walking safari), while offering the added advantage of concealing dirt and dust. Not to mention that all of those pockets on safari shirts, vests and jackets are infinitely useful in the bush!

Looking for a perfect ensemble or appropriate African safari clothes for your upcoming luxury safari ? Feel free to stop by our online  Safari Shop  and take a look around. From broke to flatbed success: How Fairfield native Jason Burroughs rebuilt his trucking company

Jason Burroughs remembers a time when he was not only carrying loads for his trucking business but also the weight of the world on his shoulders.

He started his first company, Able Body Moving and Delivery LLC, in 2010, at the age of 26. Eight years later, the life and business he had worked hard to build was crumbling before his eyes.

“I felt defeated in so many ways,” said Burroughs. “I had been beaten up and robbed by entrepreneurship. I had a business contract go south, and I lost [more than] 10 box trucks and the majority of my labor force. … My marriage of five years was failing, and we had two small children.

“My marriage had become so contentious that I moved out of the house into an unfinished garage that was fully furnished with spiders, roaches, and centipedes. … I was suicidal and didn’t want to wake up to life on a daily basis,” he said.

His saving grace was his faith and daily inspirational videos, including one from motivational speaker Eric Thomas, who said, “When you want to succeed as much as you want your next breath, you will succeed.”

Fueled by grit, faith, and determination, Burroughs got back to business and rebuilt his first company brick by brick. Then, in 2020, the 39-year-old Fairfield, Alabama, native started what he believes is his most successful venture yet: Carrier and Brokered (C&B) Transportation Systems, a flatbed trucking company.

C&B has since secured Tier 1 contracts with billion-dollar companies and become the single supplier for diversity, equity, and inclusion for pipe-and-valve-manufacturing company Consolidated Pipe and Supply Inc. (CPS Inc.). When a company secures a Tier 1 contract, it becomes the prime contractor and direct supplier and distributes the work to subcontractors.

Burroughs also set up a sister company to C&B: Sky Blue Logistics, which serves as a freight brokerage firm. In total, he has five businesses under his belt, including 3 Levels of Game, a digital marketing company founded in 2019, and Coach Jason Cultivates, a business coaching endeavor established in October 2023. He was recently selected as one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s 2024 Small Business Award winners.

Thanks to his numerous business ventures, Burroughs has become a regional leader in the trucking industry, and he has used his experience and business acumen to form the Magic City Joint Venture (MCJV), a cohort that helps other Black- and minority-owned trucking companies secure multifigure contracts with large corporations.

Game Changer

The Birmingham resident said he’s done nearly everything in trucking “from residential and commercial moving to delivery and installation contracts, all the way to 3PL, [or third-party logistics],” said Burroughs. “I’ve run everything from box trucks to heavy haul commercial vehicles. C&B Transportation Systems transports PVC pipe, coal, brick, and other commercial construction equipment on a regional scale.”

The real game changer came when Burroughs sought larger contracts with multimillion- and billion-dollar companies like Amazon, and became the sole in-house transportation concierge service for CPS Inc.

“When [the COVID-19 pandemic] hit, I started using commercial trucks and hauling freight throughout the Southeast, while acquiring dedicated contract work. We’ve transported freight for Amazon, and in 2021 we got a contract with [CPS Inc.], delivering freight to Southern Company and Alabama Power. We make all of their deliveries to over 50 locations across 20 different states,” he said.

“The partnership with CPS Inc. developed into a mentorship where they began to invest in us,” Burroughs added. “We are the first minority-owned trucking company they’ve partnered with, and we serve as their single supplier for diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Team Building

The divorced father of two has an 8-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son, and he has a great deal of empathy for businessmen and businesswomen who aspire to make a living and meet their family’s needs.

In 2022, Burroughs set out to collaborate with other minority trucking companies to help them reach their highest earning potential through the MCJV. The collective operates with a dozen Black- and minority-owned trucking companies and collaborates to secure Tier 1 contracts. Burroughs considers this one of his most significant business endeavors.

“I noticed that some small-business owners have individualistic perspectives and feel the need to try to do everything on their own. I think that methodology is incorrect [as it pertains to] success and how to obtain it.

“I learned the value of team building and collaborating, and I wanted to instill that perspective and enrich [the cohort] with my resources, experiences, and failures [to] help other Black- and minority-owned companies reach their full potential,” said Burroughs, who organizes and recruits on behalf of the MCJV.

He also serves as the group’s lead representative, making pitches before major companies and corporations to secure contracts: “I speak on behalf of everyone who’s part of the joint venture. … I’ve spoken before Shipt, [a logistics company owned by Target Corp.], and a host of other companies,” Burroughs said.

Freedom and Redemption

The trucking industry represents freedom and redemption in many ways for Burroughs.

“I established C&B Transportation because I wanted to create pathways to financial independence for impoverished individuals and myself. [Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)] opportunities are some of the highest paying jobs, [and people] can earn $70,000 or more a year. Those opportunities are the same for everybody, no matter who you are or where you come from,” he said.

“People transitioning from incarceration and disadvantaged circumstances can obtain CDL certification after a six-week program, and the opportunity can’t be diminished by blemishes on their background.”

Burroughs has always wanted to be a businessman.

“I remember collecting cans with my grandad [in Brighton, Alabama], and taking them to get recycled. I remember being 10 years old selling video games and basketball cards to my friends,” he said.

Nonetheless, Burroughs remembered “self-inflicted challenges” and not applying himself during his years at Oak Mountain High School.

“I was popular and had a lot of friends, but I was actually a horrible student,” he said. “I spent a lot of time in detention and being suspended. … Most of the time, I felt like school was mundane and boring from an academic standpoint. I usually did only enough to get by.”

In 2002, at the start of his senior year, Burroughs found himself enrolled in an alternative school, a necessary detour in order to graduate on time.

“Even then, I was highly intelligent. I just wasn’t scholarly,” he said. “I knew back then that I wanted to own a business and be impactful one day, although my current situation saw me as an at-risk youth headed nowhere fast.”

From there, he cleaned up his act. Burroughs attended Jefferson State Community College, at the Shelby-Hoover Campus in northern Shelby County, Alabama, and Shelton State Community College, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, before landing at the University of Alabama, also in Tuscaloosa.

“After a few semesters, I realized I really didn’t need a degree to be successful and that I was learning more about the business world from part-time jobs at moving companies and [the United Parcel Service (UPS)],” he said.

Family Life

Being the oldest of three sons allowed Burroughs to witness his parents, Darryl and Angela, rise to the upper middle class. His father attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and has had a long career as a computer programmer, and his mother is a graduate of Birmingham’s Samford University and a registered nurse.

“I got to see my parents work and build together,” he said. “Seeing them start out in a two-bedroom house in Brighton to moving us to an upper-middle-class subdivision off [U.S. Highway 280] showed me what hard work and planning could do.

“I have a lot of strong successful men in my family, and their success was a constant reminder that I had to make something of myself. My uncle Mark [always said], ‘Tomorrow’s successes are sown in the frustration of today’—and that stuck.”

Burroughs has two younger brothers, Jamile and Jeremy, and he recalled that growing up was “all sports, video games, and a lot of wrestling. I had a good upbringing, [wonderful] grandparents on both sides, good uncles, cousins. … I’m grateful.”

As for fatherhood, Burroughs said it’s given him a heightened sense of purpose. “I think on a transgenerational level now. How can I improve the lives of my children’s children? What type of values can I instill in them that will serve them throughout their life? That’s what motivates me to continue evolving and building,” he said.

Best Tanzania Safari Companies FAQs

Each safari company listed in this article has a good reputation and experience in helping you plan different types of safaris .

Now, let's discuss how you should go about choosing the Best Tanzania Safari Companies for your travel wants and needs.

How do I choose the Best Tanzania Safari Company?

An excellent question. I recommend that you choose the best Tanzania Safari Company according to three key criteria:

  • Read reviews about safari companies (the higher, the better).
  • Check the safari company's website.
  • Select a safari company based on style and your budget.

Read reviews

When deciding on a safari company, it is important that you choose an operator with good, recent reviews and high ratings on platforms such as TripAdvisor and TrustPilot .

Check the Company’s Website

Good travel companies usually have awards and acclimations displayed on their website. Also, find out how long they have been operating. The best way to check your local operator is to ask them how they accept payment.

Many local companies cannot accept payments other than via Western Union or cash on arrival. This doesn’t mean you have to be suspicious, but I’d recommend finding a company you can pay online instead.

On the other hand, many international companies have easy purchase frills, but might be coming with hefty price tags.

Select Based on Style and Budget

Each safari company specialises in a different type of trip, so be sure to compare Tanzanian safari prices and itineraries . You can also compare accommodation quotes with online lodge rates to see if you are getting a fair deal.

Which tour?  Here are 7 of my favourite Tanzanian safaris:

  • Gombe Chimpanzee Safari  (2 days)
  • Nyerere (Selous) Budget Game Drive Safari  (3 days)
  • Group Camping Safari (incl. Tarangire and Ngorongoro)  (4 days)
  • Scenic Northern Tanzania Safari  (7 days)
  • Epic Ruaha Adventure Safari (incl. Mikumi and Selous  (9 days)
  • Family Luxury Serengeti Safari (starts and ends in Moshi)  (10 days)

Sam Altman appeared to troll Elon Musk by dredging up a years-old Twitter post

  • Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI last week.
  • Following the news, Altman resurfaced an old exchange with Musk by replying to the Twitter thread.
  • Altman was seemingly being sarcastic by writing "anytime" after Musk thanked him in 2019.

Insider Today

Sam Altman seemed keen to attract Elon Musk's attention by resurfacing an old conversation with the owner of X.

Back when the platform was known as Twitter, the OpenAI chief replied to a 2019 exchange he had with the billionaire after Musk filed a lawsuit against him and OpenAI.

Altman wrote "anytime" next to a salute emoji in the conversation thread, in which he had previously praised Musk and Tesla.

"It's gross seeing so many root against Tesla. Be the person on the side of the climate and innovation, not the person hoping to make money on puts," Altman wrote in 2019. "Also, betting against Elon is historically a mistake...and the best product usually wins."

Musk wrote back at the time, "Thanks Sam."

Musk sued Altman and OpenAI last week, accusing the company of jeopardizing its mission to benefit humanity by partnering with Microsoft.

OpenAI was founded by Altman, Musk, CTO Greg Brockman, and several other engineers and scientists as a nonprofit, its website said . The pair have had a complicated relationship and have exchanged jabs over the years.

OpenAI seemed to dismiss Musk's claims in the lawsuit in a memo sent by one of its executives, Jason Kwon, which Axios and Bloomberg obtained .

Kwon suggested that the lawsuit "may stem from Elon's regrets about not being involved with the company today", the Bloomberg report said, citing the memo.

OpenAI's chief strategy officer appeared to rebut Musk's lawyers' argument that OpenAI has become a subsidiary of Microsoft.

Kwon said, "We decide what to research and build, how to run the company, who our products serve and how to live out our mission."

He added, "We also directly compete with Microsoft to deliver the best value and products to businesses, developers and everyday people. As we know, OpenAI is the creator of ChatGPT and ChatGPT for Enterprise, while Microsoft offers Copilot and Copilot for Microsoft 365."

In a separate memo Altman sent to OpenAI employees, obtained by Bloomberg, he dubbed Musk a hero. Altman said that he missed the billionaire, who he says used to compete by building better tech, the report said, citing the memo.

OpenAI didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.

Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, has a global deal to allow OpenAI to train its models on its media brands' reporting.

Now and then: What Moscow looked like when it was rural (PHOTOS)

oldest safari company

Moscow was not built at once - the ancient city is still expanding, annexing new villages and towns. In total, over 220 rural settlements became Moscow districts, but the exact number of them is hard to estimate. Active development of the outskirts started in 1960, when it became necessary to solve housing (many people lived in communal apartments) and traffic (with the construction of the Moscow Ring Road) problems. Then, Moscow, with its six million inhabitants, increased almost twice in size and its new districts filled up with panel houses , which defined the appearance of ANY residential area in Russia until recently. By the 1980s, when the number of official residents exceeded eight million, Moscow went beyond the Moscow Ring Road, joining the districts of Butovo, Zhulebino and others. And, in 2012, the 12 million-people strong Moscow increased by almost 2.5 times again, annexing several towns up to the border with Kaluga Region, thereby becoming Europe’s largest city. Today’s residential areas include lots of high-rises, shopping malls, parks and public sites. We’ve chosen seven villages to compare how they look - then and now.

Left: A cow in the Belyayevo-Bogorodskoye village, 1968; Right: A 30-meters-graffiti devoted to the FIFA 2018 championship at the Profsoyuznaya street.

Between 1960-1986, several neighboring villages became the new Konkovo district in the south-west of Moscow (where you will find subway stations Kaluzhskaya, Belyaevo and Konkovo) with its main highway, Profsoyuznaya Street. This is a very beautiful area, where you won’t find industrial territories; instead, there are lots of parks, hills and old churches. It’s a pleasure to walk around Konkovo! In old photos, you can see that while they were building panel houses, cows were still grazing around them.

2. Kozhukhovo

This is one of the oldest villages in Moscow, which has been known since the 15th century and, since 1923, was included in Moscow. Kozhukhovo in the south-east of the city had its own railway station even in tsarist times, but the log houses remained here until the 1970s, when the area was finally surrounded by concrete buildings.

3. Troparyovo

Above: Wooden houses of the Troparevo village, 1978. Below: Troparevo metro station, 2019.

Troparyovo district in the southwest of the city was built on the site of the village, which became Moscow in 1960. The name came from its first ruler, boyar (a noble) Ivan Tropar (the word ‘tropar’ means a religious song in a church), who was buried here in 1393. During the Soviet years, there was a big kolkhoz (collective farm) with good transport connection, a school and a store. The last wooden houses were demolished in 1981. And, in 2014, a metro station was opened.

4. Chertanovo

Above: Chertanovo airfield, mid-1960. Below: A park in Chertanovo, 2010.

The former village of Chertanovo in the south of Moscow became its part in 1960. Besides a kolkhoz and other agricultural areas, in the 1940s-1960s, there was an airfield where you could learn to fly a glider. Then the village began to be built up with panel houses and the northern part of Chertanovo was even designed as a model neighborhood and considered a “Soviet paradise”, which could be shown to guests of the 1980 Olympic Games. (Read more about that here )

5. Cherkizovo

oldest safari company

Above: Old houses in Cherkizovo, 1964. Below: Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya street, 2009.

The old village of Cherkizovo-Podmoskovnye in the east of Moscow became part of the city in the early 20th century, but, until the 1970s, it still resembled a village with its wooden houses and gardens. Now, Cherkizovo is included in the Preobrazhenskoe District and the village’s name remains in the names of several streets and subway stations. You will also find the preserved Church of Elijah the Prophet, built in 1690.

6. Cheryomushki

Above: The village of Cheryomushki, 1954. Below: A new house in Cheryomushki, built on the place of old panel houses, 2020.

In 1956-1959, the village of Cheryomushki in the south-west of Moscow was the area of the first housing development made up of ‘Khrushchyovkas’ buildings. It became a part of Moscow in 1958. The experimental site consisted of 13 four-storey and seven eight-storey buildings. The pilot apartments were tiny, but facades were decorated with brick, the courtyards had real fountains and pergolas for plants and the development had its own stores, canteens and even a cinema. (read more about it here )

Today many old ‘Khrushchyovkas’ in this district are replaced with new multi-storey buildings with big apartments and modern infrastructure.

7. Kuryanovo

Left: Kuryanovo in 1967. Right: Kuryanovo railway station.

If you wondered where the time stopped in Moscow, it’s in the village of Kuryanovo (in the southeast) that has been part of the city since 1960. Kuryanovo is bordered from the city by the railways and going there is like taking a little trip to the Soviet past. In this area, most residential buildings are still two-storeyed with many gardens in the backyards. And here’s a big Lenin’s monument in the center of the district. Locals like their neighborhood for its authenticity.

In 1960, the village of Vykhino in southeastern Moscow joined the city. The old settlement, together with the Lenin collective farm, was demolished and residents were moved from their log huts to modern panel houses. Today, Vykhino is one of the largest districts of Moscow, where more than 220,000 people live.

9. Kommunarka

One of the main districts of so-called ‘New Moscow’ became the settelment  of Kommunarka in 2012. In Soviet times, there was a large sovkhoz, which fell into disrepair with the collapse of the USSR. Today, the main street of the area is named after the last sovkhoz head, Alexandra Monakhova. The district it is very actively built up - in a few years, here appeared about hundred new houses. A subway station opened there in 2019.

Vatutinki is another ‘New Moscow’ settlement, which joined Moscow in 2012. It’s as much as 17 kilometers to the MKAD (Moscow Ring Road). Before 2012, Vatutinki was the home to about 10,000 people and today, there are about 35,000 inhabitants. The population is constantly growing, moving into new houses.

The owners of these old wooden houses refused to sell when real estate developers moved in. Take a look at the last villages surrounded by concrete giants.
