Royal Princess Overview

Royal Princess  was christened by the lovely and royal Duchess of Cambridge, formerly Kate Middleton. This ship offers many incredible features, most notably the SeaWalk, a glass enclosed hallway that extends 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship giving passengers a spectacular and unobstructed view of the ocean below. Royal Princess features dozens of food options and an area to play bocce ball, croquet and golf, along with an expanded atrium with a tea tower where passengers can brew their own tea blend - a very royal experience, indeed.

Royal Princess Balcony Stateroom - Princess Cruises

  • Balconies Royal Princess has abolished oceanview cabins. Princess made all of their outside cabins balconies, which gives passengers not only great views of the ports they're in and the oceans they are traversing, but with a balcony you get to experience cruising with all of your senses. You’ll hear the sea birds squaw, you’ll smell the fresh air and feel the breeze on your face. A balcony offers a step up, fit for the Royal Princess’ esteemed passengers.

Royal Princess Atrium - Princess Cruises

  • The Atrium The Royal Princess takes Princess Cruises to a new level. With an expanded size and lots of new features, the design team on the ship reinvented many of Princess’ core features. The Atrium, which is the center piece of the ship, is 50 percent larger than any Atrium before her. The Royal Princess’ Atrium connects three stories of the ship with beautiful staircases and presents the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee or catch an interactive show.

Princess Cruises' Royal Princess

  • Godmother To honor the Royal Princess , none other than the Duchess of Cambridge christened the ship when she debuted in the spring of 2013. The Duchess, formerly known as Kate Middleton, christened the ship just over a month before giving birth to the heir to the British throne, Prince George. Middleton carries on an important family tradition as the original Royal Princess was christened by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Royal Princess cabins review

Royal Princess cabins with balconies are 1438 (80% of all staterooms). Wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) are 36 (of which 29 Balcony, 7 Inside). The number of all cabin categories is 38. Just like the sisterships and NCL Epic , the Royal Princess ship lacks Oceanview cabins (has no outside staterooms with Picture- or Porthole windows).

Follows the review of Royal Princess staterooms as amenities, furniture and included (complimentary) services:

All staterooms are quads (accommodating max 4 passengers). All balcony cabins are with sliding glass doors (floor-ceiling) opening to a private step-out veranda. Most cabin balconies are relatively small (sized 40 ft2 / 4 m2) and narrow, furnished with footstools, 2 patio chairs and a round table. Balcony railings are either of toughened glass or solid steel. Balcony staterooms have ample closet space, bathroom (WC-shower), double sofabed, desk-chair, chest of drawers.

Royal Princess Suites are in 2 types - Balcony Suite (S2-Owners, S3-S4-Penthouse, S5-Premium) and Mini-Suite (MA, MB, MC, ME, MF, M1-M6-Premium). Bonus amenities offered in all Suites include deluxe mattress/pillows, 2 TVs, upgraded bathroom amenities (massage showerheads, luxury bath products, luxury bathrobes, terry towels), luxury furniture on the balcony. Balcony Suites have additional perks: choice of 3 deluxe mattresses, iPod docking station, sun loungers on the balcony, bathroom with separate shower stall, complimentary services (Internet Cafe, laundry/dry cleaning), exclusive access to Concierge Lounge (located on Deck 14).

All Royal Princess cabins as standard/complimentary amenities offer living area (vanity, desk, seating), 2 twin beds (convertible to Queen-size), deluxe bedding sets (Egyptian cotton linens), wardrobe, desk, smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, bath products (shampoo, body lotion, conditioner), minibar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, evening turndown service, complimentary 24-hour room service.

All staterooms are fitted with the signature "Princess Luxury Bed". The new "cruise bed" was developed in collaboration with PhD Michael Breus (commonly known as "The Sleep Doctor") and the designer Candice Olson. The new cabin beds feature a luxury pillow-top mattress, individually wrapped coils (reducing surface sway) and hypoallergenic duvets.

Passenger-use launderettes (laundromats) are located on decks 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16. These are self-service laundry facilities with ironing boards and detergent being provided.

"Club Class Mini-Suite" is a new cabin category that was rolled out fleetwide in 2017. The new (VIP-guest) Mini-Suites offer the following complimentary services and amenities - "Club Class Dining", Elite Lounge exclusive access, complimentary in-cabin dining (hors d'oeuvres), priority embarkation/disembarkation/tendering. Club Class Dining includes a separate area part of the MDR (main dining room) reserved for Club Suite guests only. The exclusive dining experience includes expedited seating, dedicated waiter staff service, exclusive menu (featuring Chef's specials) and tableside preparation of some dishes. Club Class Dining is available for breakfast and dinner every day, and also for lunch on sea days only. The new suites replaced some existing mini-suites. Their cabin size and layouts remained the same as the other mini suite grades.

Royal Princess Cabins Guide: The Best And Worst!

No doubt Royal Princess is famous for its luxurious amenities and upscale offerings, but wait, there’s something you must consider before booking your cruise.

On my last cruise of 2023, I discovered an interesting fact about Royal Princess Cabins. Surprisingly, not every cabin offers an equal experience. Some cabins have some restrictions and don’t match up to expectations.

Therefore, I think it’s vital that you know about these cabins before booking yours.

Generally, you should avoid those rooms whose balconies are off-limits when the ship is moving and those with obstructed views, excessive noise, or limited privacy. Also, avoid those which can cause worse sea sickness.

In this guide, I’ve tried to explain everything about the cabins in a way you can understand the cabin location and type. However, if you are familiar with the deck rooms of Royal Princess, you can jump to the “Cabins to avoid the” section.

Table of Contents

Royal Princess Cabin Type

On Royal Princess, there are five main cabin types:

On newer Royal-Class cruise ships, you might also see the Ocean View Cabins, which are unavailable on Sky Princess.

On this ship, you can choose a room inside the ship with no outside view, or you can opt for a room with a balcony, which could be a standard balcony cabin or a more luxurious suite.

Below, I’ve discussed these cabins step-by-step to help you decide which one is right for you and to easily understand the avoid section.

1- Interior Or Inside Cabins

interior cabin

Interior or inside cabins are the smallest rooms (staterooms) on the ship, devoid of windows or sea-view balconies. As their name suggests, these are on the inside of the ship.

These rooms are designed for two people, but few can accommodate up to four, which is ideal for budget warriors and travelers like me who prioritize onboard activities over a view.

While inside cabins may not offer a sea view, they provide a peaceful and quiet environment. The beds inside are flexible, typically arranged as twin beds, but can be converted into a queen-sized bed for added comfort.

However, if you choose an inside cabin that sleeps up to four, you might find extra Pullman beds , ideal for children but usable by adults. These beds are either stowed in the ceiling or attached to the wall.

Royal Princess Inside Cabin Grades

If you’re unfamiliar with the Royal Princess Cabin Grade, here’s the simple explanation:

“A Grade of cabin is a code that has two parts. One representing the type of cabin, and the other referring to its location on the ship”.

It’s very important to have an understanding of the cabin grades.

The Grade of Inside Cabins begins with the letter I, with the second letter running from A to F. “A” is considered the top option, and “F” is the least desirable due to location among these.

Always remember that the cost of Inside cabins can vary based on their location. Specifically, Inside “A” cabins may be priced slightly higher due to their better positioning within the ship.

2- Balcony Cabins

balcony cabin

Balcony cabins on the Royal Princess are the most popular because of the private outdoor space (balcony). These cabins aim to provide an enhanced balcony experience so passengers can enjoy panoramic sea views.

Considering the right Balcony cabin is important as they have a few variations. So, you need to understand which one meets your preferences.

On Royal Princes, there are five types of Balcony cabins:

  • Balcony with Obstructed View
  • Deluxe Balcony
  • Deluxe Balcony with Obstructed View
  • Premium Deluxe Balcony

All the Balcony cabins that have obstructed views are on Deck 8 and are behind the lifeboats, which is the reason for the obstruction.

However, there are ways to tinker with the system and choose a cabin between two lifeboats. Then you only have a slight restriction in your view, but you also save money . I’ll cover that in more detail later in this guide.

Balcony Cabin Grades

3- mini-suites.

Mini-Suites

Mini Suites are like the Junior Suites of Royal Caribbean , which offer more space than the balcony rooms, with a few perks and amenities. I would say these suites are the bridges between the balcony rooms and full suites.

In these suites, you’ll get a comfortable sleeping area, a sitting area with a sofa bed, a spacious closet, a private bathroom with upgraded amenities, and a larger balcony for guests to relax and enjoy the views.

Here’s the complete list of Mini-Suite perks:

  • A sitting area with a sofa bed and coffee table
  • A curtain to separate the sofa bed sitting area from the main bed
  • An extra TV – one for the sitting area and one facing the main bed
  • An enhanced bathroom with bathtub and massage shower
  • A better bed with a luxury mattress topper and better pillows
  • Up to four chairs on the balcony (compared to the standard two)
  • A glass of sparkling wine when you board

Royal Princess Mini Suite Grades

4- club class mini-suites.

club class

The Club Class Mini-Suites on the Royal Princess is a premium accommodation category offering few enhanced amenities and services compared to standard mini-suites.

These perks and services include:

  • Priority embarkation and disembarkation at the beginning and end of your holiday
  • A comfier bed
  • Half bottles of red and white wine were provided on embarkation day
  • Bathrobes are provided for each guest.
  • Evening canapes served in your suite (on request)
  • Exclusive priority seating in the Main Dining Room with extra menu options

So, if you want priority access while staying in the Mini-Suites, you should book this Club Class Mini-Suite.

5- Royal Princess Suites

The suites are the best accommodation on a Royal Princess, perfect for guests looking for an elevated cruise experience.

These suites are like the Grand Suites on Royal Caribbean , designed to cater to different preferences and provide a luxurious cruise experience.

These suites offer a more spacious area with completely separate living and bedroom parts. Along with the spacious area, you also get additional perks and amenities, including Mini-Suites.

These perks and amenities include:

  • Priority embarkation and disembarkation at the beginning and end of your cruise and for any excursions
  • Priority lines at the shore excursions and guest services desks
  • Priority booking for special dining restaurants
  • Club Class Dining in a reserved area of the Dining Room with extra menu options
  • Access to the Lotus Spa Thermal Suite
  • Upgraded room service menu
  • A welcome glass of Champagne on arrival
  • A free mini bar, a fruit bowl (refreshed on request), and fresh orchids in your suite
  • A free mimosa at breakfast each day
  • Ice service, twice a day
  • In-suite tea service
  • Evening canapes (available on request)
  • A cruise card wallet
  • Use of umbrellas as necessary
  • Free laundry, dry cleaning, and shoe polishing services
  • A free private portrait sitting with the ship’s photographer

Royal Princess Suite Grades

Premium suites vs penthouse suites.

Premium Suites Vs Penthouse Suites

Premium and Penthouse Suites offer different levels of luxury and amenities, but they have some differences.

Firstly, Penthouse Suites offer larger spaces and more exclusive amenities than Premium Suites.

Premium Suites are best for four people, but Penthouse features square footage, a larger living space, a separate bedroom, and an expansive private balcony.

Penthouse Suites are more expensive because of the enhanced perks and amenities like personalized service, access to private lounges, and sometimes even butler service.

Below is the comparison table of both Suites for your better understanding:

Royal Princess Special Cabin Types

By now, you might clearly understand cruise ship cabin types. Now, it’s also important to know about the special cabin types so we can move to the “Cabins to Avoid” section.

The Royal Princess has special cabins to cater to different passengers and needs. Below are some of the special cabin types to consider according to your needs:

1- Aft Rooms

Aft rooms are those situated at the back of the ship. These cabins are a top consideration for people because of the view over the wake and also due to the less wind.

Additionally, these cabins are spacious, providing you with a comfortable environment in which to enjoy your vacation.

You can choose the following aft-facing Royal Princess rooms:

  • Premium Deluxe Balcony Rooms
  • Penthouse Suites
All of the aft-facing rooms are located on decks 8 to 15. Each deck has two Penthouse Suites in the aft corners and then four mid-aft Premium Deluxe Balcony cabins mid-aft.

Connecting Rooms

Connecting rooms are also the hot-booking rooms on Royal Princess as most of the cruise guests have families and want to split their group between two rooms anyway, which is a good idea, in my opinion.

So, they opt for the connecting rooms with a door between them.

But genuinely speaking, if you are considering booking connecting rooms because of privacy, it’s not worth it as they aren’t as soundproof as the walls.

On Royal Princess, there are a wide range of connecting room options:

  • Two Interior cabins
  • Two Standard Balcony cabins
  • An Obstructed Balcony and a Standard Balcony
  • An Obstructed Balcony and a Deluxe Balcony
  • Two Obstructed Deluxe Balcony rooms.
  • Two Deluxe Balcony Rooms
  • Two Mini Suites
  • Two Club Class Mini-Suites
  • Royal Princess Accessible Rooms

3- Accessible Rooms

Luckily, getting around the entire ship in a wheelchair or scooter is easy, but only specific cabins are designed to suit these things. These specific cabins are called accessible rooms.

They’re more spacious, have larger doors, no steps to get into the room, and the bathroom is wet.

These rooms are in high demand and fill up fast, so it’s best to book them as early as possible if you need one.

Let’s discuss the cabins you might want to avoid during your cruise.

Cabins To Avoid In Royal Princess

Royal And Villa Suite Perks

All the information provided above aims to give you a comprehensive and factual overview of the various cabins available on the Royal Princess, aiding you in deciding which suits your preferences best.

Now, let’s delve into some details you might not typically find in official information. We’ll explore the cabins you might want to avoid to ensure you have the most enjoyable holiday experience onboard.

1- Out Of Limit Balcony Rooms

Avoid L101 to L108 and M101 to M108 rooms.

As I mentioned in the beginning, you should avoid booking the rooms with the out-of-bounds balcony.

It’s because, during the ship’s movement, the wind blows against the front of the ship. So at the moving time, you won’t be allowed to use the balcony.

So, if you’re the one who loves to spend more time on the balcony, avoid these rooms on Decks 15 and 16.

However, if you don’t plan on using the balcony too much and want to use it when the ship is at the port, these rooms might be an ideal option for you because of their lower price and bigger balcony size than those on the ship’s sides.

When To Choose

  • Balcony use during ship movement isn’t a priority.
  • A larger balcony size at a potentially lower cost is preferred.
  • Port-side balcony enjoyment matters more than sailings

When To Avoid

  • Desiring extended balcony time during sailings.
  • Constant balcony access throughout the cruise is essential.
  • Concerned about obstructed views or balcony restrictions.
  • The price difference doesn’t justify limited balcony use at sea.

2- Cabins With Great Sea Sickness

Avoid L101 to L129 and M101 to M129, as these are the top deck rooms at the front or back.

It’s because these rooms can make seasickness worse. So if you’re the one who suffers from seasickness, avoiding these rooms is a good idea.

Try to choose the rooms at the middle and bottom of the ship. You’ll be less likely to feel the ship’s motion on the waves in these rooms.

When To Choose

  • Susceptible to seasickness.
  • Preference for the reduced sensation of the ship’s movement.
  • Aims for the lesser impact of waves’ motion.
  • Prone to seasickness or motion discomfort.
  • Desire to minimize feelings of ship’s movement.
  • Concerned about the heightened impact of waves at sea.

3- Obstructed View Rooms

Avoid the cabins on most of Deck 8; cabins beginning with E.

If you plan to relax on your balcony, the last thing you wouldn’t want is a lifeboat obstructing your view.

So, if you’re a person who wants a good view and fresh air, then avoid these rooms. These rooms may be cheaper, but you miss most of the scenery.

However, if you are not curious about the sea view and want to save money and spend it on other cruise activities, these rooms could be ideal options.

Downsides Of Cabins With Obstructed View

  • Limites Scenic View
  • Less Natural Light
  • Potential noise
  • Privacy concerns
  • Limited fresh air
  • Budget-conscious and prioritize cost savings.
  • Not primarily concerned about sea views.
  • We prefer to allocate a larger budget for onboard activities.
  • Desire an unobstructed view from the balcony.
  • Value scenery and a clear view of the sea.
  • Will spend considerable time relaxing on the balcony for the view and fresh air.

4- Aft Balconies That Can Have Soot Buildup

Avoid Aft cabins and suites because these rooms have a risk of soot, particularly on the higher decks.

I know you must be thinking that these are the best rooms with amazing views over the ship’s wake, but unfortunately, there’s also a risk of soot.

That happens because soot from the funnels travels backward toward the aft, settling on the balconies as the ship moves forward.

If you don’t want to risk it, consider choosing a cabin along the ship’s sides instead.

  • Highly value the view over the wake of the ship.
  • Comfortable with the potential for occasional soot buildup.
  • Prefer the expansive view and quieter location at the back of the ship.
  • Prefer a soot-free balcony environment.
  • Concerned about potential cleanliness issues due to soot.
  • Value balcony cleanliness and pristine conditions over specific views.

5- Interconnecting Rooms When Not Needed

Avoid booking interconnecting rooms when you don’t have many people in the group.

As these rooms are less private due to less soundproofing, avoiding these cabins is better.

However, you should not take any tension from strangers entering your room. The doors have locks, but they are not as thick as the walls.

So, if you want a more peaceful and private room, avoid them.

  • Traveling with a larger group or family requires multiple rooms.
  • Prioritize convenience and accessibility between connected spaces.
  • I am not overly concerned about sound traveling between rooms.
  • Traveling with a smaller group or as a couple.
  • Seeking a more private and quiet room atmosphere.
  • Prefer a higher level of sound isolation between rooms for privacy.

6- Rooms With Less Privacy

M411, M415, M417, M419, M423, M425, R415, R417, R421, R423, R427, R429, A417, A421, A423, A427, A429, B417, B421, B423, B427, B429 (SeaWalk)

M722, M723, M724, M725, M726, M727 (Horizon Terrace)

D145 to D277, D701 to D725 (Cabins above)

Certain Balcony cabins might lack the desired level of privacy. On the starboard side of the ship, Deck 16 features the SeaWalk, a glass-bottomed walkway extending from the ship.

This setup allows people on the SeaWalk to peer down into your balcony, offering a reciprocal view that might impact privacy, especially on higher decks.

Towards the back of the ship on Deck 16, there’s the Horizon Terrace, where people often unwind and take in the wake’s view.

However, the staggered structure at the ship’s rear allows a direct view into the balconies of Deck 15 aft cabins.

Additionally, on Deck 9, certain Deluxe Balconies protrude further and can be overlooked from above. So avoid these cabins if you don’t want anyone to be looking into your balcony.

  • Don’t mind visibility from public areas onto the balcony.
  • Enjoy the idea of reciprocal views from certain deck areas.
  • I’m not too concerned about occasional passerby glances.
  • Seeking more privacy on the balcony.
  • Prefer undisturbed and secluded balcony views.
  • Dislike the prospect of others looking into your balcony space.

7- Noisy Rooms In The Morning Or During The Day

Avoid M302 to M436, and L101 to L301

Cabins from Decks 9 to 14 are surrounded by other accommodations above and below, ensuring a generally quiet environment. However, some areas on the ship might be a bit noisy.

During the day, some sections of Deck 15 below the pool area and Deck 16 can be noisy. In the early morning, people tend to head to the pool deck to reserve loungers, causing noise as they move furniture around.

Although it might seem quiet to them, you might notice the noise above your cabin. Similar noise issues might arise if you opt for a room on the Lido Deck, situated below the Sanctuary and Retreat pools.

  • Require absolute silence during the day.
  • Easily disturbed by noise from pool deck activities.
  • Seek a quieter environment for relaxation.

For more information, check out the deck plan.

8- Noisy Rooms At Night

Avoid E125, E130, E201 to E225, E445 to E612, E630 to E733.

At night, the primary noise sources stem from the entertainment venues on Deck 7, directly beneath the first deck of accommodations.

If you’re on Deck 8, you might experience some noise filtering through the floor, and depending on your location, it might persist until the early hours.

Areas above the Princess Theater, Princess Live!, and the Vista Lounge, spread across the deck, are spots to avoid due to potential noise. Generally, anywhere on Deck 8 could have some noise continuing into the evening.

Booking a cabin on a higher deck is recommended for those who prefer an early bedtime.

  • Not bothered by mild noise in the evenings.
  • Don’t mind the potential faint noise from the entertainment venues below.
  • Require absolute silence during bedtime.
  • Easily disturbed by noise from entertainment venues.
  • Prefer a quieter environment for resting at night.

What Are The Best Cabins on Royal Princess

Here is my recommendation on what you should look out for depending on your needs:

  • Luxury Penthouse: If the budget is not your concern and want more luxury amenities and perks.
  • The Cheapest Cabins: If you’re cruising on a budget and want to spend more on activities than the room, these rooms can be ideal.
  • Extended Balcony Cabins: If you want to spend more quality time while enjoying the sea on the balcony, go for the extended Balcony cabins.
  • White Noise Cabins: If you want a constant, low-level noise, choose C316, C317, C322, C323, C328, C329, C334, and C335 cabins.

Standard Vs. Deluxe Vs. Premium Deluxe Balcony

Standard Balcony rooms differ from Deluxe and Premium in space and bed configuration.

Deluxe rooms are 5% more spacious than the Standard ones, whereas the Premium Deluxe rooms are 18% more spacious than the standard rooms.

So, if space is a priority for you, it’s evident that considering Deluxe or Premium Deluxe balcony rooms would be the ideal choice.

Secondly, the other difference lies in the bed configuration for three and four-berth cabins. Deluxe or Premium Deluxe cabins include a sofa bed.

However, three-berth rooms won’t have Pullman beds, while four-berth rooms have a sofa bed and one Pullman bed.

So, considering the upgrade can be a good decision if you are traveling with your children since they have more sleeping space.

What Is The Best Floor To Stay On A Cruise Ship?

The best floor to stay on a cruise ship depends on your preferences and priorities. However, below are my recommendations that can help you decide:

  • For Less Motion Sensitivity: If you suffer from sea sickness, opt for a midship cabin on a lower deck. Lower decks in the middle of the ship experience less movement and are usually more stable.
  • For Convenience: Midship cabins are convenient for accessing various onboard amenities and facilities as they’re centrally located.
  • For a Peaceful Environment: Go with the higher deck cabins as they tend to be quieter due to the larger distance from the noisy entertainment and public areas.
  • For Better Views: Choose higher decks if you love to enjoy amazing views. Also, avoid those rooms with obstructed views.

Ultimately, the “best” floor to stay on a cruise ship is subjective and depends on your priorities.

Consider your preferences regarding motion sensitivity, noise levels, convenience, and views when choosing the ideal deck and cabin for your Princess cruise.

Can You Smoke In Royal Princess Cabin?

You can smoke in designated areas on the deck and certain bars on the Royal Princess and Regal Princess.

However, it’s essential to note that smoking is strictly prohibited inside cabins, cabin balconies, restaurants, cafes/cafés, lounges, and theaters.

Following these rules ensures a comfortable and compliant environment for everyone aboard the ship.

Should I Let Royal Princess Pick My Cabin?

Letting Royal Princess select your cabin can yield varied locations; if you prioritize location or have specific preferences, choosing your own might be preferable for a tailored experience.

Can I smoke in my cabin on the Regal Princess?

No smoking or vaping is permitted in guest staterooms or balconies on the Regal Princess, aligning with Princess Cruises’ policy of maintaining a smoke-free environment in primary living spaces.

What is category DF on Royal Princess?

Category DF on the Royal Princess refers to a Deluxe Balcony cabin, accommodating up to 4 guests, with an average size of 233 square feet, offering a balcony for passengers to enjoy the sea views.

Is it better to be higher or lower on a cruise ship?

That’s totally up to you. Higher decks offer superior views but may experience less motion, while lower decks provide more stability and quicker access to amenities onboard.

Final Words

Hopefully, you will now clearly understand the hidden truths about the Royal Princess.

So, if these cabins are not according to your preferences and expectations, don’t book them. You will find the perfect alternative to that room.

Just be patient and sharp while booking your room on Royal Princess. And I’m sure this guide will greatly help you get your dream room.

Royal Princess Staterooms Offer New Amenities Suggested by Passengers

Royal Princess’ staterooms offer a number of updated features inspired by suggestions made by the line’s passengers.  Among the changes are more contemporary décor, larger showers and hand-held shower heads, pillow top mattresses, upholstered headboards, bigger television screens, and energy efficient lighting with card readers to help conserve electricity.

Deluxe Balcony – Debuting on Royal Princess , this new category of stateroom is an extra spacious balcony cabin with a comfortable sofa bed and some of the upgraded amenities found in a mini-suite stateroom, including enhanced bathroom amenities, waffle bathrobe and an upgraded duvet. Royal Princess features 720 deluxe balcony staterooms throughout the ship.

Mini-Suite – In addition to the new general stateroom amenities, mini-suites offer a decorative central lighting fixture, a privacy curtain between the bed and sitting area, and marble-topped counters.

Suite – Suites feature larger televisions, two sinks in the bathroom, accent lighting and a glass-paneled shower. For the first time on a Princess ship, suite passengers have use of a dedicated concierge lounge, an exclusive area to relax or work, with access to full front desk services, plus light snacks and beverages. Here, these passengers have dedicated staff to assist with such things as shore excursions, specialty dining or Lotus Spa reservations. It will also be used as a private disembarkation lounge for suite passengers.

Stateroom Amenities: All staterooms feature a variety of subtle changes based on feedback from passengers. Room décor uses contemporary and rich finishes, modern carpet patterns, and soft, soothing colors. Bathrooms offer larger shower spaces and hand-held shower heads. Sinks are square to provide more vanity space, mirrors feature built-in vanity lighting, and beds have pillow top mattresses and upholstered headboards. Decorative wall sconces provide enhanced lighting and televisions will be larger and wall-mounted.

Some changes have also been added to make traveling with technology easier. Electrical sockets have been spaced farther apart to accommodate multiple plugs and now offer a 220-volt socket. Additionally, several energy-saving features have been built in to the staterooms, including a card reader that activates the room’s lighting, plus low-energy LED lighting fixtures.

Families traveling in more than one cabin can take advantage of another new option with the addition of 50 adjoining staterooms.

7 Best Cruises to Alaska, According to Travel Experts

Book a once-in-a-lifetime trip to see glaciers, national parks and wildlife!

glacier bay national park and preserve, alaska

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

While some travelers dream of lounging on a beach in the Caribbean, others might be itching to put on hiking shoes and explore the great outdoors. If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.

Princess Cruises

majestic princess in glacier bay alaska

A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

disney cruise ship docked in ketchikan, alaska

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

line break

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

Here’s the ‘ridiculous’ rule on cruise ships that travelers are blasting as a ‘rip-off’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

When it comes to drinking on board a cruise ship , there is a rule that has even the most dedicated cruisers scratching their heads, claiming it is a “rip-off.”

Drink packages are a common offering on cruises, allowing guests to pay upfront to have the cost of alcoholic drinks at bars and restaurants on board the ship covered.

But there is often a catch – and it can be a terribly frustrating one.

If one person wants to purchase the drinks package, everyone in the same stateroom has to, despite the packages being charged per person, per day and strictly not allowed to be shared.

Two glasses of champagne placed on a railing overlooking a cruise ship at sunset

Australian couple Christine and Dave Russell, who have been going on multiple cruises a year for the past decade, found out how pesky the rule was when Ms. Russell decided to stop drinking 12 months ago.

It meant on three Carnival cruises , Mr. Russell had to miss out on purchasing the drinks package because Ms. Russell would have been forced to pay $111 ($72 USD) a day.

“When you times that by two and only one person drinks, it’s a lot of money,” she told news.com.au.

“I’m not going to drink $100 a day in soft drink. I don’t generally drink soft drink anyway, I only ever drink water.”

Ms. Russell described the rule as “frustrating” and “annoying.”

The Carnival cruise ship Valor heads up the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Wednesday, April 8, 2020

Carnival’s policy is that its “Cheers!” drinks package, including up to 15 alcoholic drinks a day and other non-alcoholic beverages, must be purchased by each adult assigned to the same stateroom.

No sharing is permitted.

News.com.au reached out to a number of major cruise lines that sail in Australia with similar conditions – including Carnival Cruise Line, P & O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean – and not one could give a reason.

Carnival Australia, which is the parent company of seven cruise brands in Australia and New Zealand, including Carnival, P & O, Cunard and Princess, instead said it took its Responsible Service of Alcohol seriously and drink packages were optional.

“Our beverage packages are completely optional, and guests have the freedom to purchase beverages individually at competitive prices, allowing them to customise their cruise experience according to their personal preferences,” a Carnival Australia spokesperson said.

A sign is shown at the entrance to the headquarters of Carnival Cruise Lines in Doral, Florida

“Our beverage package conditions align with general industry standards which have been in place for many years, and mirror other hospitality industries when opting for a set menu or drinks package.

“Guests who are pregnant or don’t drink alcohol do not have to buy a beverages package, and we offer a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages.”

Adam Glezer of  Consumer Champion , who advocates for Australian customers with issues in the travel industry, told news.com.au the rule was “unreasonable” and “a profit making exercise.”

While he believes drink packages on cruises are a brilliant idea, he said cruise companies should not be pressuring people to buy them if they don’t want to.

Mr. Glezer, who is a cruiser himself, said it was “disappointing but not surprising” the cruise companies had failed to give a reason for the rule.

“They haven’t given a reason because there’s no explanation that would paint them in a decent light,” he said.

“I’m fighting for this to be changed because a drinks package should be optional per individual.”

“If someone drinks, they should be able to purchase the drinks package without others in the cabin being obliged to purchase the same package.”

“I’ve met a number of people that have been quite annoyed by the situation.”

He believes a cruise company who decides to buck tradition and “get rid of the ridiculous rule will have an edge on their opposition.”

Virgin Voyages and Disney Cruise Line, which had their first seasons in Australia this summer, have both ditched traditional drink packages.

Virgin instead allows guests to pre-pay their “Bar Tab” and get bonus on-board credit for doing so.

It promotes its offering as being different to other cruise brands, with “no restrictive drink packages with unreasonable rules here”.

Disney’s deals include packages of bottled wine and a refillable beer mug offering, where guests receive a 21 oz glass mug and can refill it for the cost of a 16 oz beer at any bar on the ship that serves draft beer.

Royal Caribbean has a slightly different take on the traditional rule that the same drink package must be purchased by those staying together.

If a guest within the stateroom does not drink alcohol then a ‘Refreshment Package’ must be purchased, including soft drinks, coffees, tea, juices and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Travelers have shared mixed reactions to cruise drink packages online, with some warning it is not worth it and others explaining how they got their money’s worth.

The Carnival Magic is seen docked in Ocho Rios, Jamaica during day three of the ShipRocked cruise on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024

One Australian TikTok user, who goes by the handle “jasmintiexo,” created a detailed breakdown of every drink she ordered on a eight day Royal Caribbean cruise.

It showed she was able to get $US1151.50 (about $1760) worth of drinks for $US520 (about $795).

See how major cruise brands in Australia apply the rule on drink packages below.

Carnival Cruise Line

If purchasing the “Cheers!” alcoholic drinks package each adult assigned to the same stateroom must purchase it too, starting at $111($72 USD) per person, per day.

There is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks a day.

Colorful holiday cocktails on cruise ship

If the drinks package is part of an offer you have received from Carnival, then it is applicable to the 1st and 2nd adults in the cabin only; if the 2nd passenger is not 18 years of age, then the “Bottomless Bubbles” package (soft drink and juice) will be assigned at $7.50 (about $5 USD) per day.

Carnival Cruise Line told news.com.au: “If one of the guests sailing together chooses not to purchase a package, they always have the option to enjoy beverages ala carte.”

Celebrity Cruises

Guests must purchase the same drink package for all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom. Packages may not be shared.

A non-alcoholic drink package will be added instead for teens 13 to 17 years old, pregnant guests, and recovering alcoholics or guests with a medical issue that does not allow them to consume alcohol.

Alcoholic drink packages start at $US89 ($136) per person, per day.

Each adult assigned to the same stateroom must purchase the same drinks option.

Sharing is not permitted.

On a five to 14 night cruise, the “Beers, Wines and Spirits” package starts at $US72 ($110) per person, per day.

P & O Cruises

If two or more guests aged over 18 years are sharing a cabin all guests must purchase the same drinks package.

There is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks a day. Sharing drink packages is not allowed.

Alcoholic drink packages start at $99 ($65 USD) per person, per day.

Princess Cruises

The requirement for alcoholic drink packages to be purchased by more than one guest is not included in the updated terms and conditions.

However in its FAQ, Princess Cruises states third and fourth guests in the same stateroom are not required to purchase or be defaulted to the selected package of first and second guests in a stateroom, implying the first two guests must purchase the same package.

Alcoholic drinks are limited to 15 beverages a day and must not be shared.

The alcoholic drink packages start at $110 ($72 USD) per person, per day.

Royal Caribbean

If purchasing the “Deluxe Beverage Package” it is required that it is purchased by all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom.

Packages cannot be shared.

If a guest within the stateroom does not drink alcohol then a “Refreshment Package” must be purchased.

This includes soft drinks, coffees, tea, juices and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Prices can change depending on the sailing.

The alcoholic drinks package is said to cost between $US56 ($86) to $US105 ($161) per person, per day, and the “Refreshment Package” costs $US29 ($44) per person, per day (both excluding gratuity).

2 crew members die on Holland America ship; fire breaks out on Carnival cruise

MIAMI — Two crew members died on board a Holland America cruise ship, and a fire broke out on a Carnival ship while both of the ships were in the Bahamas this weekend, officials said.

The two crew on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam died Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it was calling at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.

"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.

A representative of the Bahama’s Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to a request for information, such as the crew members’ identities and the cause and manner of death.

The cruise line said the conclusions of any investigation would be taken seriously. "Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," it said.

Passenger Laine Doss said she was on board when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A. system.

"We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely somber."

The captain's voice broke, she said.

"He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were canceled, joyous events were canceled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."

Crew members were being offered counseling, Holland America said.

Dutch government inspectors determined the vessel to be "fully operable," and this was "confirmed" by the U.S. Coast Guard, the cruise line said.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said she was looking into the statement and was unable to immediately confirm it.

The Nieuw Amsterdam returned Saturday to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, guests disembarked, and the vessel has embarked on a cruise with a stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Monday, Holland America said.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."

The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Fire on the port-side exhaust funnel of another Florida-based cruise ship in the Bahamas, the Carnival Freedom, rocked some passengers Saturday and took the ship out of commission for repairs, the cruise line said.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was on a detoured path, destined for an unscheduled stop in Freeport, as a result of stormy weather and high winds when fire started.

"I was shocked," he said. "I mean, I looked out there and you're not supposed to see black smoke and fire shooting out of the tail end of the cruise."

The blaze was preceded by "the loudest thunder-lightning clap that I've ever heard in my life," Barnes said.

Ship personnel extinguished the fire, Carnival Cruises said.

The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises. The funnel was stabilized, passengers were expected to be returned to Port Canaveral, and the ship will set off to Freeport for repairs, it said.

"The damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Carnival Cruises said.

Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said.

It was the second funnel fire on the Carnival Freedom since 2022.
