Kitale is an agricultural town found in western Kenya, approximately 380 kilometers from Nairobi (the capital of Kenya). The town lies between the Cherengani Hills and Mount Elgon . The main cash crops grown in Kitale are sunflower, tea, coffee, Pyrethrum, seed beans, and seed maize.

Kitale is the administrative center of the Trans-Nzoia District, in the Rift Valley Province. The town was founded in 1908 by white settlers. A branch line of the Uganda Railway from Eldoret reached the town in 1926 promoting the growth of the town.

It was established in 1974 and is the first of the Inland museums to be developed in the country. The museum is within the town approximately 1 kilometer from the town center. It has numerous ethnographical materials collected from the surrounding ethnic groups.

In 1987 the museum acquired 30-acres of a natural riverine forest, which is used for conservation of various plant species and wild animals .

Saiwa Swamp National Park

It is located near Kitale and it is the smallest national park in Kenya occupying only 3 square kilometers. Saiwa Swamp National Park was created as a habitat for the Sitatunga, a rare aquatic antelope.
