Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Discover cultural footprints forever present... O ver the centuries, the island of Sicily was colonized by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans and assorted others before becoming part of Spain, then the Bourbon Kingdom, and finally part of Italy. And today...

Private tour of palermo's teatro massimo, behind-the-scenes at italy's largest opera house, palermo's teatro massimo vittorio emanuele.

The largest theatre in Italy and Europe's third-largest opera house, Palermo's Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele opened in 1897 – 22 years after construction began – with a production of Verdi's "Falstaff." Its neoclassical exterior was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture, while its auditorium reflects the style of the Renaissance and features excellent acoustics, as you'll see (and hear) on your guided tour of this grand venue. Closed for 23 years starting in the 1970s, the Teatro Massimo – the location where the final scenes of "The Godfather, Part III" were filmed – was restored and reopened in time for its centennial in 1997.

Reception and dinner at a private villa

An exclusive reception, dinner and art tour hosted by a family member at a private villa in palermo.

Built in the 18th century for the King of Naples, Ferdinand I and Queen Maria Carolina of Borbone (an older sister of Queen Marie Antoinette of France) during their exile in Sicily, Villa Chiaramonte Bordonaro is still home to the Barons Chiaramonte Bordonaro today, and its gardens rank among the most beautiful parks in Palermo. The villa's current owners often open up their home for special events… like your exclusive private visit and gala dinner, to which you are welcomed by the son of the current Baroness, who hosts a tour of his family's villa and their private art collection housed in a building designed by Ernesto Basile, the architect of the Teatro Massimo.

An alluring Sicilian escape....

An irresistible destination boasting miles of private Mediterranean coastline, Verdura Golf & Spa Resort is a place where your room will seem woven subtly into the Sicilian landscape... where you'll enjoy a true sense of space and uninterrupted views of the azure waters from your private terrace.

Sicily is an island of wild beauty and history, with a culture that dates back to antiquity. The tour encapsulated the passion and pride of a Sicily one must experience.

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

A Sicilian Odyssey is an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Sicily is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present challenges for you if you have difficulty walking independently and, therefore, we do not recommend this tour if you have such difficulty. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and steep and winding hill town roads. The amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your sole discretion; you may remain on the coach during any of these walking excursions.

Examples of our walking itinerary:

  • Agrigento 2 hours of walking over mainly even terrain
  • Noto - cobblestoned but flat walkways
  • Siracusa - uneven terrain at Archaeological Park
  • Taormina - steep walkways throughout city center

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Sicily has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild and wet winters and hot, dry summers. Summer temperatures are often above 90°F (32°C) during the day and drop to about 70°F (21°C) at night. In the fall the temperatures range from 60 to 80°F (16 to 27°C). Rainfall can occur anytime throughout the year, though the summer months are the driest.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Sicily, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at the hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
  • Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
  • Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
  • Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .

Medications and First Aid:

  • Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
  • Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

  • Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
  • Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
  • A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

  • A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
  • Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

  • A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.
  • Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
  • Light sleepwear.
  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
  • Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while European appliances run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.

As a result, American appliances designed for use in the United States (typically 120 volts at 60 Hz) may not be directly compatible with the higher voltage used in European countries. Plugging a 120-volt appliance into a 220-240-volt outlet without the appropriate voltage converter or transformer can cause damage to the appliance or pose safety risks.

If you plan to bring American appliances to Europe, you will need a voltage converter or transformer to change the voltage to 220-240 volts from 110 volts. Additionally, you will likely need a plug adapter to fit the American-style plug into the European power outlets. All of Europe operates on the same two round-pronged outlets (Type C).

It's important to note that not all appliances are compatible with voltage converters, so it's essential to check the labels or user manuals of your devices before using them with a voltage converter. Some electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, are dual voltage and can support 120V and 220-240V, so they may not require a voltage converter, but a plug adapter will still be necessary.

To avoid any issues with electrical compatibility during your travels, consider purchasing appliances specifically designed for the voltage used in the region you'll be visiting or use appropriate voltage converters and plug adapters to ensure the safe operation of your American appliances in Europe.

We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. And to pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them with you.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are common accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is commonly available in European hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.

However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings. Most hotels in Europe can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if you are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold, and   your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings. Learn more about Airport Transfers here .

To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

Sicily has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Summers in Sicily are typically very warm, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F) and sometimes reaching into the 40s (over 100°F). Winters are mild and relatively wet, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10 °C (50°F). Spring and autumn are pleasant seasons with comfortable temperatures and less rainfall.

In more ways than one, Sicily is the ultimate Italy. Geographically, it's the southernmost province— warm, golden, and sprinkled with blindingly white Greek temples that are among the world's best preserved. And culturally it's more like Italy as we'd have imagined it a hundred years ago. Farmers still get to market by donkey. Mt. Etna is active even today and is the backdrop to almost every view. Even the bread is rougher and crustier—better to match vibrant food unlike any other you'll find in Italy. We've scouted a remarkably scenic walking tour that captures the spirit of Sicily. There's Palermo, of course…and the rock-clinging seaside beauty of Taormina. From beautifully sited lodgings, we set out on walks among the temples of Agrigento and immerse ourselves in ancient archeology. Offshore, we wander the jewel-like Aeolian Islands. And we're inclined to agree with the poet who wrote: "To have seen Italy without seeing Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all."

Start on the Amalfi Coast! Join our Amalfi tour the week prior to your Sicily departure for an amazing Italian vacation. Call 800.200.3887 for details.

• Begin with a walk to scenic Mount Pellegrino before exploring Palermo, on foot at eye level

• Walk through charming countryside in the heart of Sicily near Regaleali, where a friend invites us into his kitchen for a special treat — a taste of the renowned local wines and a cooking instruction.

• Luxuriate in your perfectly-sited accommodations among Greek temples that date from 400 BC and are scattered amid lovely hills with wildflowers, herds of sheep and the sea in the distance.

• Sip and stroll your way through an organic winery followed by a gourmet picnic while on the island of Lipari.

• Get the 'only with Classic Journeys' access to a local family's olive grove to learn about the olive oil making process and sample the fine results.

• Explore magnificent views of Taormina as it clings to the cliffs over the Ionian Sea with Mt. Etna's snow-capped cone as a backdrop.

• Head to the slopes of Mt. Etna for a walk in a breathtaking landscape of lava dunes before a memorable picnic of local specialties.

• Boat to the Aeolian Islands for walks through vineyards at an organic winery

• Walk the medieval streets of Taormina and pay a visit to the Greek theater with its panoramic view of the sea.

Why Choose Classic Journeys

  • Experience Sicily on foot and at eye level. Each day, join your guides on the most cinematic footpaths in the region, including with a volcanologist on Mt. Etna, through vineyards on the Aeolian islands, and through olive groves and working estates.
  • Exceptional full-time local guides who become your well-connected friend. Our amazing guides are with you throughout each day of the tour, sharing their lifelong connections as well as engaging anecdotes about the history and culture of this fascinating island.
  • Small groups that provide you unrivaled access. An average of 10 guests per departure means we can offer you special ‘only with Classic Journeys’ access to sites like the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento so you experience it with a forensic archeologist who brings the temples to life, a cooking instruction with a family on their farm that other companies cannot arrange because of larger group sizes, and vineyard walks with a winemaker on the Aeolian Islands.
  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations in Sicily, including the only accommodations in the archeological zone in Agrigento, White Lotus-worthy retreats in Taormina, and award-winning properties that show up on World’s Best and Gold lists.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the Sicilian people. From gourmet picnics in the vineyards overlooking the sea in the Aeolian Islands to coveted local restaurants, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know Sicily more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Regenerative Travel that supports the history, culture, people and places you’re visiting with us in Sicily. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live where we travel. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.

EXPERIENCES TO BE LIVED

tours in sicily

How many times have you yearned to enjoy a fully relaxing holiday, to contemplate a beautiful landscape while breathing in clean air and sipping a good glass of Etna DOC?

To stroll through a piazza with open-air bars and get lost in a maze of narrow streets, with your nose in the air, wandering between flowery windowsills and bell towers, noble palaces and rounded balconies, peering into courtyards?

Dreams and desires can come true: it’s time to visit Sicily’s beautiful villages.

These small towns by the sea, surrounded by greenery, nestled in the hinterland or perched on the mountains will offer you what you are looking for, with small curiosities and new discoveries, such as houses carved out of the rock that were inhabited until the last century, or the most famous film set of all time.

In each of the nine Sicilian provinces, you will find the right village for you and, nearby, many other places that may be less renowned but will remain forever in your heart.

These people-friendly places and holidays can be experienced in company and in safety, where the watchword is “unspoiled”, just like your chosen village.

Unmissable flavors

The flavours, shapes, scents and colours of Sicilian food have become symbols of overwhelming pleasure all over the world.

The outstanding desserts include cannolo   and cassata , which bring out the freshness and authenticity of local ricotta. Granita , which does not include ice here, reveals itself in all its creaminess. It can be difficult to choose between the many flavours and it is so delicious it can even give the best homemade ice cream a run for its money. Never alone: it should be accompanied by an aromatic hot brioche , and strictly with a “tuppo” (nobble).

Almonds , another of the island’s points of pride, are used to make the paste that is often chosen as a sweet souvenir by those visiting a distant friend. It is also the basis for a thirst-quenching and sumptuous milk and the choreographic creations of martorana fruit , which add life to the windows of the pastry shops and amuse tourists and passers-by.

In Sicily there are many delicacies rooted in tradition and faith , which become beloved symbols before they being consumed.

Bridging sweet and savoury, the juiciest red oranges  come from the countryside most beloved by the sun, while the most famous pistachios , those from Bronte, now dominate the culinary scene thanks to their gastronomic flexibility, which ranges from their use as sweet cream in desserts to the intense pestos that bring together ancient grains [link to Sicilian Ancient Grains] in the form of inimitable first courses.

A treasure trove of flavours: from Bronte’s green gold to the finest red gold , Saffron , which seduces the palate and inspires you to dream. And digging in the undergrowth, precious jewels and nuggets emerge: mushrooms and truffles .

An icon of Sicilianness, arancin*  has a name that divides people but its taste brings everyone together: it is a rice-based wonder, an essential fried delicacy and the pinnacle of Sicilian street food .

Sicily is the cradle of the Mediterranean diet , which has always been the healthiest and most varied approach to food. It also brings out the best of fish and vegetables through caponata and parmigiana , as well as pickles and infinite speciality dishes, in which the Pachino tomato reigns supreme .

In Sicily, the dinner table becomes a “stage” for exhilarating flavours: one case in point is pasta alla Norma , made with tomato sauce and fried aubergines, and so named because it is considered sublime like the work of the same name by the “Swan”, the composer Vincenzo Bellini.

Meat from historic farms, such as the Nebrodi black pig, rounds off rich and surprisingly impeccable menus.

The price of Sicilian wines is rising rapidly, as the product becomes increasingly sincere, intoxicating and versatile. It serves as an invitation to savour this island in small sips, with a glass in your hand and lightness in your heart.

Walking along the nostalgic paths of taste  you will find that even dipping bread in oil  proves why you will never have enough of Sicily.

Visiting the local markets will be the best way to deeply discover the tasty, spicy and most authentic flavours of Sicilian street food. Sicilian street food is among the most celebrated, and its main symbol is the arancin * of contention, which is loved and appreciated all over the world.

Sicily is the cradle of the Mediterranean diet and will surprise you witha thousand combinations of poor ingredients that enrich vegetarian menus.

And if you are wondering whether Sicily is the right destination for you, you will find the answer in a glass of local wine .

Discover all the flavours of your happy island.

Traveling you learn

In Sicily, you can visit the majestic volcano Etna , the Valley of the Temples , the Greek Theatre of Taormina and the one of Syracuse . You can learn more about Quasimodo, Verga, Il Gattopardo and the Rape of Persephone . Close your geography, science and art history books. Forget everything you learned at school and get ready to live a new experience.

You can follow the verses and passages of the greatest writers in world literature, from Sciascia to Camilleri, from Tomasi di Lampedusa to Pirandello . Travel along the literary routes that will lead you to discover an unusual side of Sicily.

Discover the roots of the fascinating myths and legends . These stories take inspiration from an extraordinary nature whose shapes and colours influenced the course of history itself. All tales reveal one truth: Sicily has always been a place loved by the Gods .

Travelling through Sicily, you can learn what rare botanical wonders live around the island. You can visit corners of paradise such as the Bioparco di Sicilia , or you can choose to follow the footsteps of Charles V around Sicily’s most beautiful cities . Spend some time watching hundreds of colourful kites soar through the sky, then taste and discover the history of real Aztec chocolate .

Travelling is the best way to learn something new and unique about Sicily.

Tourism Commitment

There are stories of men , perspectives, voices and hands that come together and, with commitment, give life to new hopes. They are the symbols of a Sicily that rises from its ashes.

Discover the Sicily that doesn’t give up.

The part of Sicily that does not want to be forgotten creates memorials. Palermo Ecomuseum promotes projects related to shared social responsibility, participatory care of the territory and sustainable tourism. The local community plans cultural, touristic and educational initiatives.

A terrible earthquake destroyed the town of Gibellina . Today its existence echoes through the work of its rebirth: Burri’s Cretto . There is a part of Sicily that shouldn’t be forgotten and abandoned. In Favara , from the greyness of a neighbourhood destined to decay, Florinda and Antonio created the Farm Cultural Park . Today it is one of the world’s most vibrant cultural centres. With Fiumara d’Arte, Antonio Presti has proclaimed the salvific power of beauty, creating one of the largest and most evocative land art parks in Europe. The inhabitants of the small and enchanting Borgo Parrini transformed the town into one of the most evocative places on the island, a virtuous example of urban regeneration.

There is another part of Sicily that does not surrender to fate. It pursues its dreams and reaches for the stars. One example is the shepherd poet Lorenzo Reina , who shapes the Andromeda Theatre in Santo Stefano Quisquina with his bare hands.

We cannot mention the part of Sicily that does not surrender to the Mafia . With infinite gratitude for the men who gave their lives to protect their land, it keeps their memory alive and educates the new generations to fight with messages of peace.

Discover the beautiful stories that Sicily has to tell. Prepare yourself for an exciting journey that will enrich your soul: this is what committed tourism is all about.

Sicily is the perfect and unique destination for those who want to spend a holiday surrounded by art, history and culture.

Let’s discover the cities and small towns of Sicily. Noto is the capital of Sicilian Baroque. In Caltagirone , we will be surprised by the blaze of colours of its ceramics. Syracuse is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a walk through its streets will take you back in time. In Modica , the Duomo di San Giorgio’s great beauty (the Baroque icon in Sicily) will leave you speechless. In Marsala , you can admire the most beautiful sunset in the world, which makes the atmosphere of the Stagnone surreal. We then arrive in Piana degli Albanesi , a tiny Albania in the heart of Sicily, ready to welcome you with its lake teeming with life.

You will get to know such a wide and varied territory that you may wonder whether you are still in the same Region. Sicily seems to be the gateway to another dimension. Heaven and hell make peace in the Etnean landscape. Gods and nymphs weave love stories, unbridled passions and jealousies through forests, rivers and springs. But don’t forget to visit the smaller islands.

In Lipari , you can taste the worldwide famous Malvasia. Panarea is the most exclusive and popular destination. You can explore the Island of Alicudi on the back of a donkey. Don’t miss visiting the characteristic Island of Vulcano , renowned for its mud baths. Stromboli is pyrotechnical, while, in Salina , you can see the home of the poet Neruda, set of Massimo Troisi’s unforgettable movie “ Il Postino ”.

Then there are the Egadi Islands , Pantelleria , Ustica , Linosa and Lampedusa . They are all surrounded by a wonderful sea, and each Island has its palette of reflections, from deep blue to the turquoise sky. You will be completely captivated by the colours and atmosphere of these places.

There is too much to see, and it is hard to choose where to start. Do not waste time then: get ready to go. Sicily is waiting for you!

Spirituality

There is increasing demand for holidays that take us away from crowded places and daily stress, where the body and mind can find rest and meditation.

Excursions lead us to places where nature and silence reign, with monasteries, hermitages and shrines where it is possible to find religious devotion by retracing the paths of Saints and beatified people, as well as a secular moment of serenity.

The Sacred Paths are routes that have been travelled by pilgrims since ancient times, and have now become itineraries with great attraction for tourists. Some are a few dozen kilometres long, others hundreds. Discover the itineraries along the ancient roads of the Via Francigena or along the most beaten religious paths, and get ready to walk through the most enchanting places in Sicily.

Sicily is ready to offer an interesting network of religious routes that allow you to discover bright gems that are still little known, alone or with the help of local nature associations.

Spa and Wellness

Sicily offers a wide range of natural treatments to regenerate the body and mind.

If relaxation, sensory well-being and immersive pleasure are your top travel priorities, when you visit Sicily, you will discover that it is an amazing open-air spa .

It is not a matter of destination or length of your holiday: you will find out that the simplest and most natural things have extraordinary power over your health.

Breathe deeply and find your balance using the wisdom of the centuries-old forests and the energy of the frozen waterfalls . Surround yourself with sunshine and beauty. Relax on the salt crust in the unique setting of the Stagnone . Explore and rest in the natural caves , places of the Gods in the minor islands .

To treat yourself to some relaxation, spend a day in Vulcano’s mud baths . They are a true elixir of life. The thermal waters scattered throughout Sicily supply some of the best facilities in Italy .

Let your wellness journey begin. You deserve the best: you deserve Sicily.

Sea in Sicily

A quick look at the beaches, lidos and coves on the wonderful Sicily sea, with surprising transparency and richness of colours.

We’ll start from the coast on the south of this incredible island, going from Capo Passero in Syracuse to Capo Granitola in Trapani , which proudly reveals its golden sand with an exotic flair.

Marina di Ragusa, Pozzallo, Punta Secca in the territory of Ragusa , the Torre Salsa Reserve near Sciacca, the island of Lampedusa and the Scala dei Turchi in Agrigento have very long beaches that are usually not crowded, and which blend the “off-grid” harmony and relaxation we all seek.

This sandy coast extends to Mazara del Vallo and Marsala and continues with the Via del Sale, the Stagnone Reserve and Mozia in Trapani . Here we find out how salt is produced in the museums dedicated to it. Riserva dello Zingaro and the white, fine sandy beach of San Vito lo Capoe need no introduction and open up to the Tyrrhenian coast, characterised by a succession of beaches and cliffs.

The island of Ustica , Cefalù and Mondello in the Palermo area, the Aeolian Islands , Capo d’Orlando and Tindari in the province of Messina and the Egadi Islands in the Trapani region all overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the blue of the sea is intense and snorkelling is very enjoyable.

The eastern coast starts after Messina with the lava rocks and pebble beaches of Taormina and Giardini Naxos, the Acireale Timpa Nature Reserve and the cliffs of Aci Trezza. The sand then returns in the Gulf of Catania , Syracuse , the Vendicari Reserve , going up to Marzamemi and the Isola delle Correnti, the precise point where the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea meet.

Also discover the child-friendly beaches and those that have been awarded the blue flag in 2023 !

The climate and landscapes allow you to pursue many outdoor sports activities in Sicily, combining wellness and fun: you will be spoilt for choice.

If you love the sea, you can dive and snorkel, experiencing the thrill of contact with the most awe-inspiring fauna and flora and discovering the “Divers’ paradise” on the bottom of Ustica, in the heart of Italy’s first marine reserve. You will behold images and colour combinations that you thought were pure science fiction with your own eyes.

On the surface, however, the sea works together with the wind to playfully push you towards kitesurfing: try it in the beautiful setting of Stagnone in Marsala!

The Sicilian natural scenery offers an original and fully comprehensive solutions for any level of fatigue, for all ages and for previous background of physical activity, from those who want to get fit to those who want to push their limits. Choose between a walk with your children   and the extremes of climbing and ski mountaineering. There are challenges with a very wide range of difficulty levels, from golf, which you can play in both the west and east of Sicily, to a highly evocative bike trip, from a day spent feeling truly free on a sailing boat to a horseback ride on Etna or crossing the Argimusco.

The hinterland of Sicily is the heart of the island, it is a little-known area. Here time flows naturally, and the contact with the locals is wonderful. It is a land rich in cultural expressions, millenary traditions, archaeological, architectural and naturalistic treasures. Many places make you want to stay forever.

Let’s discover the slopes of Mount Etna or the Simeto Nature Reserve : this area is rich in lava caves, waterfalls, rapids and small lakes. The Piana degli Albanesi Lake , on the other hand, is an area teeming with life. From the Bosco Della Ficuzza , we find ourselves in the heart of the Parco delle Madonie , dotted with small towns where time flows slowly and quietly.

Enna is the highest town in Italy, and from here you can enjoy a panoramic view over the whole island. Caltanissetta has a historical centre full of Renaissance and Baroque monuments.

Sutera is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The Teatro di Andromeda in Santo Stefano Quisquina is a magical place surrounded by the pastoral landscape of the Monti Sicani .

Despite being in the centre of Sicily, far from the coast, you can enjoy the incredible and unique view of the Aeolian Islands . You will feel like you have just completed a journey into the most unusual and authentic Sicily.

Families and Children

Sicily is the perfect place to spend a carefree and fun holiday with your family and children.

Here you can travel and walk with children in total comfort and safety , discovering beautiful and unexpected natural settings . You can travel on foot, by bicycle or on the back of friendly donkeys . There are many ways to discover a land rich in hidden treasures, observing fauna and flora of rare beauty.

We recommend the best beaches to enjoy the wonderful Sicilian sea and spend your days among sandcastles, velvet seabeds and curious little fish. If you are lucky enough, you may even see a specimen of Caretta Caretta turtle !

In the Valley of the Temples , children can become budding archaeologists. They will be provided with the right equipment and guided by experts in discovering ancient remains. The Ludum is the first science museum in Sicily where you can learn what laws regulate the Universe.

You can discover the rare botanical wonders hidden around the island together with your family. You can visit corners of paradise such as the Bioparco di Sicilia . Or you can test your courage in the Adventure Parks , suspended in the air amidst the greenery.

Another unforgettable experience is driving along the writers’ road . Follow in the footsteps of Charles V on a historical route. Have fun with the children by flying colourful kites and tasting Aztec chocolate . Be inspired and choose the experience that perfectly suits you and your family.

Art and Culture

Some treasures do not need to be touched to perceive their rarity. However, in this triangular and evocative region, you will constantly come across the signs left by history, the passage of man and his creativity.

Get ready to discover how Sicily can amaze you. Sicily will surprise you when you least expect it. As you stroll along the streets, you will come across the works of contemporary street art : it is intense, immediate and universal. Looking out, over the infinity of the Sicilian hinterland, from the Andromeda Theatre, you will see a mystical and ancestral place. You will feel like floating in sidereal space. You have the chance to visit artisan’s workshops , guardians of traditions handed down from father to son.

Some customs are very ancient, such as the working of obsidian or the unique and precious Mediterranean coral . These traditions keep alive arts and knowledge of inestimable value, they are World Heritage Site. This heritage also includes the Sicilian puppets , protagonists of the Opera dei Pupi . Or the art of dry stone walls that embellish landscapes with their ancient beauty.

And what about archaeological sites ? Of Sicily’s 7 UNESCO sites , some are among the most beautiful archaeological sites of all time. Examples, Pantalica , the Valley of the Temples  and the magnificent Theatre of Taormina . They all bear witness to a glorious past in bright colours just waiting to be discovered. In Sicily, you will find countless places of culture , beautiful theatres and museums, artistic routes and endless opportunities to breathe in art en plein air. You will cherish this journey in the depths of your heart, along with your most precious memories.

Private Guided Tours of Sicily

Sicily is one of our favorite places to visit. Each time we go and no matter how many Sicily tours we plan, the island situated in the Mediterranean Sea calls us and our clients back again, every time. Sicily almost touches mainland Italy due to its location just off the tip of the Apennine peninsula, at the “toe” of Italy.

The island is easily reachable by air from the Italian mainland with frequent flights departing from Naples, Rome, and Milan to name a few. We offer a variety of tour options that may be customized for any traveler.

One of the main attractions you can’t miss is Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in all of Europe at over 10,990 feet (3,350 meters). The Mediterranean island of Sicily is a treasure trove of the undiscovered. Beside the most obvious attractions, the island contains lovely coastal towns, hip cities, amazing art and food that is touched by the flavors of places like Morocco. You must include Sicily on your next trip to Europe.

Sicily is one of the few places on earth that have the earliest evidence of humans; dating back to about 12,000 BC. The island is filled with architectural treasures like the Valley of the Temples, the Pantalica Necropolis and Selinunte. Don’t forget the amazing Aeolian Islands! Our Sicily tours have so much to offer.

What to See In Sicily

Sicily’s attractions are cultural and scenic, and aside from a couple of summer water parks, there’s not much in the way of typical “tourist” attractions. Instead, Sicily is full of authentic experiences that can only be had in this unique island and Palermo is the place to start!

tours in sicily

At the crossroads of several important Mediterranean trade routes and subject in its long history to Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantine Greeks, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards, Sicily’s regional capital (1) is a fascinating historical palimpsest – and, with its palm trees, prickly pears and banyan trees, a botanical melting pot.

Don’t miss the glorious 12th-century mosaics in the church of La Martorana or Roger II’s private chapel, the Capella Palatina; and set aside half a day for the trip up to lofty Monreale, whose cathedral boasts yet more dazzling Norman-era mosaics.

Make sure you take time to visit the two fresh markets in Palermo. Each market is different, offering sights and sounds  that you will remember for a lifetime.

Check the Palermo opera schedule to see if there is something playing at Teatro Massimo.

One of the great cities of the Western Greek diaspora (it was home to mathematician and engineer Archimedes), Syracuse is today undergoing something of a Renaissance. Syracuse has a great historical area that has many shops and cafes for you to stop and enjoy a drink and a bit of people watching. Don’t miss the Syracuse market for the freshest veggies, meats and cheeses.

Agrigento is famous for an archaeological site know as the Valle dei Templi “Valley of Temples” spreads over two almost complete temples and the partly-reconstructed ruins of three others. The three great Greek temple complexes of western and southern Sicily are the equal to those in Greece, itself.

Selinunte, on the south coast between Mazara del Vallo and Sciacca, features not such well-preserved ruins, but its position on a coast with an abundance of wild flowers & celery that gives the site its name is hugely atmospheric. If you seek out Cave di Cusa, seven miles to the northeast, chances are you’ll have it all to yourself. Suddenly abandoned in 409BC, this was where the stone used in Selinunte’s temples was quarried, and it’s a fascinating place with great fluted column sections, carved in situ, still anchored in the mother rock.

So is that of Segesta, the closest to Palermo. Although unfinished, the elegance of the fifth-century temple that perched on the crest of a hill makes it perhaps Sicily’s most impressive Greek ruin.

Taormina & Etna, Sicily

Taormina combines a breathtaking position beneath Mount Etna with a balmy climate that allows jasmine and bougainvillea to flower even in December.

It has an historical center that sits high above the sea and hotels that offer amazing views. Lower Taormina is where you can dip your feet in the sea and eat a great seafood meal overlooking the ocean.

Roman mosaics, unearthed in the 19th century at Casale, 3 miles south of Piazza Armerina, are among the richest and most complex in situ collection anywhere in the world.

A complex that was in use from the 4th century BC right through to the 12th century AD, the villa most probably belonged to the large estate owner and would have been used to entertain and a base for hunting.

The site is well worth a detour. The artists who designed these floors had a real flair for colour and composition, and the friezes depicting marine animals, hunting scenes, the circus and the famous bikini-clad female gymnasts are all utterly delightful.

Tours of Sicily

The island of Sicily gains popularity each year and each year more tourists discover its unique flavors, towns, and people. Sicily is almost its own country, where influences from Morocco and Greece have blessed the island with interesting foods, architecture, and culture.

Our Sicily tours offer visits to the most iconic cities, such as Palermo, Agrigento and Taormina. The Valley of the Temples will amaze you, while Palermo’s food, culture, and history will delight you.

Sicily is rustic and untouched by mass tourism unlike mainland Italy; so you want to have a guide or organized plan when visiting. Our expert staff will help you navigate the island in a way that is organized, relaxing and enjoyable.

25 extraordinary Sicily escapes

Whether you want to hole up in a gorgeous villa with a pool, or snack your way through palermo’s street markets, this seductive island has a break to suit your every wish.

La Rocca Hill in Cefalu, Sicily

L ast April I drove 650 miles around Sicily, with the whole island flushed green with spring — and I’m still pinching myself in disbelief. The sun shone. Thunderclouds rumbled over the mountains. Rain poured intermittently — and on every day the island served up another slice of wonder that was every bit as varied as the weather.

Doric temples, towering sea cliffs, black-soiled vineyards, baroque piazzas, luxurious hotels, gritty suburbs, fresh snow on Mount Etna: did I really see them all on a single island? Or have I conflated every memory I have of Italy and squished them into a single week? Either way it’s an experience I’ll be feeding on for years to come — digging ever deeper into the island’s layer cake of history, landscape, food and sunlight.

And now it’s spring once more and I’m not the only one hearing Sicily’s siren call. Freed from its mafia reputation the island is hot property these days — and a wave of farmhouse conversions, new-build villas and designer hotels has swept over its hilltops and along its coastlines, ready to make our holidays comfortable and indulgent as well as captivating. Never mind the hype that built last year around the Four Seasons hotel in Taormina , the star of the White Lotus TV series. Beyond its hallowed portals, one of Sicily’s most welcome trends is the rebirth of its baglios — the hilltop farming complexes that are now wineries and olive oil presses as well as atmospheric, richly textured hotels. By no means are all of them expensive.

Alongside those you’ll find agriturismo B&Bs and reconditioned farmhouses, as well as gorgeous villas, big and small. Add in all the escorted and self-guided tours on offer this year, and it seems the holiday scene is almost as multifarious as the island itself. Here, I’ve collected some of its most tempting elements.

But please bear one thing in mind if you’re hatching a Sicilian plan. High season here can be fearsomely hot. Last July temperatures peaked at about 47C and wildfires raged around the capital, Palermo. So if extreme heat isn’t your thing, and if you plan to be active in either thought or deed, make this an April-June or September-October destination. There are wondrous things to be seen. You don’t want to miss them sheltering indoors with the air-con on.

1. Villa La Giara 2, Mazzaforno

Villa la Giara

Rough-hewn seaside hideaway for two There may be other villas dotted around on this stretch of the north coast, not far from Cefalu, but at this simple, rustic cottage you’ll think you have the sea to yourselves. It perches on a low rocky promontory, looking straight down onto the beach, while a thick belt of macchia bushes provides shelter from both the sun and nosey neighbours. The terrace is cobbled and the interior colourfully tiled, while the sighing of the waves is an ever-present invitation to go for a swim. Details Seven nights’ self-catering for two from £1,030 (emmavillas.com). Fly to Palermo

2. Monaci delle Terre Nere, Zafferana Etnea

Monaci delle Terre Nere

Distinctive design meets delicious Etna wine Coaxed back to life over the course of five years, this 62-acre Relais & Châteaux property is a lovely example of the island’s new breed of luxury estates. In orbit around its 18th-century country-mansion hotel are a kitchen garden, 15 acres of vineyards, and barns and stables that have become chic villas. Expect a rich mix of knobbly walls and 21st-century furniture, as well as a distinct mineral tang to the wine — a product of Etna’s volcanic soils. Both Taormina and Siracusa are within an hour’s drive. Details Seven nights’ B&B from £1,901pp, including flights (expedia.com)

3. Ancient monuments and agrotourism

Ragusa Ibla in Sicily

A grand tour of temples, baroque towns and wine estates Slow Sicily is the theme of this new self-guided tour from Palermo, which wisely gives you 11 days to wiggle through the island, with plenty of time to put your feet up in wine estates and country hotels in between the driving. En route, you’ll get a dazzling sense of the island’s diversity — snacking through Palermo’s street markets (the arancini are non-negotiable), swimming off the Egadi Islands, exploring Selinunte’s temples and wandering baroque Ragusa. Once you’re back home it’ll take weeks to unpack all the memories. Details Ten nights’ B&B from £2,260pp, including flights and car hire (originaltravel.co.uk)

4. Relais Santa Anastasia, Castelbuono

The Relais Santa Anastasia

An affordable wine estate near Cefalu This former abbey on the edge of the Madonie mountains offers a taste of Sicily’s grandeur and tranquillity without the usual price tag. Yes, the bedrooms could do with an update, but long hours of slack-jawed gazing await from the poolside terrace, interspersed with cookery classes and tastings in the abbey’s winery. Here, you’re within sight of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea. Winding down the mountain roads to explore Cefalu’s tightly packed coastal streets is a must. Details Five nights’ B&B from £837pp, including flights and transfers (citalia.com)

5. Zu Nillu, Favignana

Zu Nillu

A villa carved out of a Roman quarry It’s hard to know where to begin. Do you throw yourself into the plunge pool in your private Roman quarry? Its ochre-tinted walls were excavated 2,000 years ago. Or do you run though the private garden and out to the Cala Rossa, one of the loveliest bays here on the Egadian island of Favignana, off Sicily’s western tip? Then again, you could just stay put in your extraordinary labyrinthine villa, decorated with antiques, majolica tiles and modern art. Its rooftop terraces are the perfect spot to toast the sunset while your wood-fired pizza oven warms up. Details Seven nights’ self-catering for eight from £7,069 (thethinkingtraveller.com). Fly to Trapani

6. Club Med, Cefalu

Club Med

Carefree seaside resort with sun-bleached style Sprawled across a craggy headland a mile west of Cefalu’s cathedral, this is one of Club Med’s poshest resorts. Accommodation ranges from stone-faced doubles and suites, each with a terrace, to cute designer cabins, and the sun-bleached style perfectly mimics the coastal setting. But it’s not the decor that defines the luxury here; it’s the carefree sense of convenience. Almost everything is included in the price: endless buffets, all your drinks, watersports, tennis and kids’ clubs (over-eights only). All you need to do is waft about from swimming pool to sailing lesson, wondering what your next cocktail should be. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £1,820pp, including flights ( clubmed.co.uk )

7. Casameo, Marsala

Marsala cathedral

Photographic retreat on the west coast Towering sea cliffs, azure horizons, teeming markets: Sicily is full of eye-catching subjects, and on this one-week course from April 27 the photographers Andreea Elle Vas and Matt Arnold will help you to capture them. Talks and workshops will cover both people and places, while one-on-one tutorials will give guests the chance to discuss their work and tackle technical or thematic issues. Throughout, the small Casameo villa complex near Marsala will be your base, with Palermo and Trapani on the day-tripping menu. Details Seven nights’ full board from £2,900pp (responsibletravel.com). Fly to Trapani

8. A solo tour of western Sicily

The Doric temple at Segesta

Doric temples, Marsala wineries and Palermo Sicilian feasts await on canny Snapshot of Western Sicily tours for single travellers, which stick to the quieter side of the island and avoid the scorching heat of high summer (there are departures in April, September and October). Options to choose from as you sortie from your seaside base at the Tonnara Di Bonagia resort include cheese-tasting near the Doric temple at Segesta, a culinary walking tour of Palermo and a visit to a Marsala winery. Expect a mix of guiding, socialising and time on your own — with no single supplements. Details Seven nights’ B&B from £1,645pp, including flights ( newmarketholidays.co.uk )

9. Casa Victoria, Cefalu

Casa Victoria

A north coast villa with sensational views “Why on earth didn’t they build a temple here?” You can’t help but wonder, when you look west from this crisp, well-equipped villa just above Cefalu. The view from its hillside perch is straight across the Bay of Palermo towards the setting sun. Watching it from one of the terraces, with dinner on the table and everyone’s hair still wet from the pool, is sure to be a daily ritual. Inland, horse riding at Ride Sicily’s Casa Il Bosco base offers an exciting day-trip alternative to the beach (from £43pp; ridesicily.eu). Details Seven nights’ self-catering for eight from £4,084 (oliverstravels.com). Fly to Palermo

10. From Stromboli to Mount Etna

Aeolian Islands

A lava-lover’s walking tour Never mind the wine or the history or the Mediterranean; Sicily’s mind-bending sense of otherness rests on the vast, looming cones of its volcanoes. This self-guided Volcanoes of Sicily walking holiday knits together three of them, with hydrofoils and taxi transfers bridging the considerable gaps in between. You’ll fly into Catania, before being whisked to the magnificent Aeolian islands of Stromboli, Lipari and Vulcano, and then back to Mount Etna. Expect friendly and characterful three-star hotels, and a shuddering sense of what lies boiling beneath us. Details Seven nights’ B&B from £1,859pp, including flights (headwater.com)

11. Adler Spa Resort, Siculiana

Adler Spa Resort

A sense of sanctuary on the southwest coast On a blissfully underdeveloped stretch of coast, southeast of Sciacca on the western side, the Adler Spa Resort offers a green-tinged modernist aesthetic that’s rare in Sicily. Here, many of the low-slung bedrooms are built into the bluffs, Mediterranean plants sprout on restaurant roofs and unbaked clay walls help to regulate room temperatures. The emphasis throughout is on healthy living. So don’t spend too long gazing out to sea from one of the infinity pools. You’ll miss out on all the yoga, mountain biking and sea kayaking. Or maybe a hot-stone massage in the high-tech spa. Details Seven nights’ B&B from £2,089pp, including flights (expedia.co. uk)

12. Palazzo Previtera, Linguaglossa

Palazzo Previtera

A wild food and wine workshop If you’re wondering why the slopes of Mount Etna have become a gastronomic hotspot, let the British restaurateur and food writer Ben Tish enlighten you. From May 23, the author of Sicilia: A Love Letter to the Food of Sicily is leading a five-day workshop that will include a guided chefs’ tour of Catania’s food markets, as well as vineyard and farm visits, olive oil tastings and foraging walks. Accommodation will be in the Palazzo Previtera in Linguaglossa, a town on the north side of Etna, inland from Taormina. Painstakingly restored, it blazes with unexpected colour and eye-catching contemporary art. Details Four nights’ full board from £2,950pp, including workshop and tours (emotionalsicily.com). Fly to Catania

13. Casa Ortigia, Siracusa

Casa Ortigia Siracusa

The ultimate seaside city break Could there be a cooler self-catering perch than this high-ceilinged apartment that’s been stripped back to its plaster walls? When you open the French windows you can look straight down on Siracusa’s open-air food market and decide what fruit you fancy for breakfast. It’s the perfect overture to a day wandering this ancient city — clenched tight as a fist on its little island and brimming with history. Sieges, tyrants, Archimedes, Caravaggio — in the past 2,750 years it’s seen them all, as well as stunning sunsets almost every night across the Porto Grande. Details Three nights’ self-catering for four from £664 (welcomebeyond.com). Fly to Catania

14. Villa Montalbano, Scicli

Villa Montalbano

Rustic escape in the south As the name suggests, this rustic countryside villa sits in the region popularised by everyone’s favourite Sicilian policeman —– BBC4’s Inspector Montalbano . Here in the deep south, life moves at an unhurried pace, as you will, after a couple of days lounging by the pool and stretching your alfresco dinners long into the night. The interiors mix exposed stone walls with big, slouchy sofas and a modern kitchen. But you won’t be spending much time indoors. The nearest sandy beach is only four miles away. The baroque town of Scicli, wedged into a narrow canyon, isn’t much further. Details Seven nights’ self-catering for six from £1,837 (theluxurytravelbook.com). Fly to Catania

15. Bastione Spasimo, Palermo

Palermo

A soothing base in Sicily’s buzzing capital Central Palermo has become a wonder of the modern Mediterranean. At night, its long pedestrianised streets seethe with sauntering Sicilians — who seem as dazzled by the nightlife as the tourists are, piling into piazzas to drink beer and Aperols. Then, during the day, its street markets, churches and museums encourage yet more walking. What a relief then, to be able to cool your feet in the plunge pool at the Bastione Spasimo. The cute, richly textured hotel occupies a former 15th-century bastion in the fashionable district of Kalsa — and is handy for the tiny bars of the Via Alessandro Paternostro. It’s so busy down there after dark everyone ends up sitting on the kerb. Details Three nights’ room-only from £434pp, including flights (expedia.co.uk)

The terrain is undemanding and the longest leg of the journey is only 36 miles, with plenty of opportunities to wander baroque towns and swim in the sea. But even so, you won’t want to be cycling through the heat of high summer. April or May are best, when the island is still flushed with its spring greenery. Best Places to Visit in Sicily Italy 2024

W ith stunning coastlines and fascinating historical sites, there are so many wonderful places to visit in Sicily , Italy, and you'll want to save this list so you can see them all.

Located just off the tip of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea, this island is filled with an incredibly rich history and culture.

And of course, if you’re looking for amazing food or unique experiences, Sicily is one of the best places to visit!

Below are some of the highlights of Sicily that prove this is a location that should be high on your list for a wonderful vacation destination.

Where is Sicily?

Sicily is an island located at the tip of the boot of Italy. The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, it's surrounded by temperate waters and has a relatively mild climate.

Historically, the location of Sicily has made it a key location for settlement by various groups including the Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Spanish, British, and more. This has led to a blending of cultures, architectural styles, foods, and more.

There is a bridge that connects Sicily to mainland Europe through Italy, and the island has several airports as well. To fly to Sicily from Rome is a short trip, just over one hour.

When is the best time to visit Sicily?

For my trip in September, the weather was amazing. If you like beach time, July and August are busy because the weather is pretty warm and it's a great time for water activities like snorkeling and diving.

If you’re looking for the best value, traveling between November and March will save you a bundle. On the other hand, since it is the slow season, some resorts on the coast may not be open.

On a tour of Sicily, you can visit many different towns and cities, each with its own unique attributes.

My tour with Exodus Adventure Travels was a road trip around the coast of Sicily except for the day trip to Piazza Armerina to see the world-famous mosaics, which is a must.

Here’s what you can experience in different locations around the island.

Palermo is the regional capital and largest city in Sicily. As a busy port city, there is so much to see and do including beautiful Baroque architecture, museums, and churches.

The city was bombed very heavily during WWII. Some of the raids caused a lot of damage to the city. Many historic palaces and churches were destroyed, but thankfully, many of the historic structures were rehabilitated.

Where is Palermo?

Palermo is located along the northwest coast of Sicily. Its location along the coast means gorgeous weather and some of the best views you can find.

You can access Palermo by ferry from ports like Genoa, Civitàvecchia, Naples, Malta, or Sardinia. If you’re driving, there’s a ferry from mainland Italy to Sicily across the Strait of Messina and then you take the highway along the northern coast to reach Palermo. There’s also train service (and yes, crossing the Strait of Messina by train ferry!) and of course flights into the Palermo area.

Things to See and Do in Palermo

There is so much to do in this capital city, I created a guide for the best things to do in Palermo . Take a look and plan ahead of time to see all the sites like Quattro Canti, Piazza Bellini, and Palermo Cathedral, as well as what to eat.

We had an optional afternoon visit to Monreale and the ‘duomo’ but we decided to visit another museum that was closer instead.

That gave us time to wander through the carts and kiosks of street vendors, colorful markets, and local bakeries while trying some of the best local specialties.

Palermo is a city that you can spend a lot of time exploring and still not see it all ... or eat it all. Though I tried!

Erice

Where is erice.

Erice is a hilltop town that is located in the far western regions of Sicily. Legend has it that the city was founded by the hero Aeneas, and it changed hands many times over its history due to its high-ground location.

What to do in Erice

Some of the most significant influences on the area are Arab and Norman cultures. This is reflected in the unique local gastronomy of the area.

During our stop in Erice, we participated in a hands-on cooking class with a local chef. With our guide translating, the chef told us about their local cuisine, while we practiced making (and tasting) traditional recipes from the region.

We learned to make delicious bruschetta and pasta with pesto.

We also made a recipe called Pesto alla Trapanese, a typical dish of the Province of Trapani. In ancient times, this dish was made by Trapani sailors. They believed the ingredients, found on their land, protected them from adversity as well as sickness.

A combination of tomato, garlic, and almonds was used to make the pesto. We also made the busiate, a long macaroni named after a local grass, giving it a helical shape.

Our group had really become friends during our travels together, so we were encouraging each other and showing off our pasta shapes.

We used hard durum wheat semolina flour, a special kind of flour from Sicily, to make the dough. It made incredible pasta. I’m heading to an Italian market soon so I can pick some up and share the recipe!

The food was certainly an attraction, but there were plenty of sights to see in Erice, too.

Some of the highlights of our visit around the town included seeing the salt flats, taking a visit to the 14th-century Duomo de Erice (the Bell Tower of King Federico), and exploring the castle and gardens at Castello Giardini Del Balio.

The Castello Giardini Del Balio is the perfect place for those who love history. This is a Norman Castle that has been built where there once was the 8th century Temple of Venus Erycina.

It was built on the slope so there would not be easy access to it. By the time the castle had replaced it, the temple was in ruins. At one time there was a drawbridge from the Castle of Venus to the Balio Towers of Erice.

The views from here are incredible, especially of Pepoli Tower below. Take some time to explore.

We walked a bit through the winding cobblestone streets, stopping to take photos as it was just so pretty. You’ll find maps throughout the area with listings of all there is to see.

What to Eat in Erice

The highlight of our dining in Erice came out of our cooking class. Specifically, the caponata served at lunch after our cooking class was the best I’ve ever eaten.

Think of this as a Sicilian variant of ratatouille. It is a blend of eggplant with other vegetables and an agrodolce sauce. Some of the key flavors in this also come from the olives and capers that provide a bit of zing!

Where is Marsala?

Marsala is located in the far westernmost tip of Sicily. This city has a population of around 85,000 and offers a temperate climate with hot and dry summers and mild but wet winters.

If you recognize the name, it’s because of one of Marsala’s most famous products – the Marsala wine. It is Marsala’s key economic factor, although tourism continues to grow thanks to its beautiful beaches and relaxed pace.

What to do in Marsala

When you think of Marsala, you probably think of wine. What better way to experience the flavor of Marsala than with a wine tasting?

English trader John Woodhouse was headed to Mazara del Vallo to purchase soda ash, but was forced to port in Marsala by a storm. While he was in port, he tried some of the local “vino perpetuo”, wine that would be aged year after year in the same cask.

Some of the wine would be removed each year, and then it would be topped off with the annual grape harvest. He was so impressed that he decided to skip his quest to buy soda ash and instead brought wine back to England. Eventually, he set up a winery to take advantage of this special Marsala wine.

Today, the Pellegrino winery is one of the standard bearers of Marsala wine.

The Pellegrino winery has a long history, dating back to the 1880s when notary Paolo Pelligrino started a vineyard and began making wine, building on those traditions that had been in place for a century.

With the ideal weather of Sicily, the Pellegrino family has been able to create high-quality wines that have become known throughout the world.

If you stay in Marsala, check out Villa Favorita . It's a lovely resort that also offers the experience of staying in igloo-shaped houses. It was fun.

Castelvetrano

Where is castelvetrano.

You will find Castelvetrano in the south of the western part of Sicily, in the province of Trapani.

This small town dates back to at least the 12th century with its focus on agrarian life. Farming is still an important part of the economy of the town, specifically for famed Castelvetrano olives.

What to do in Castelvetrano

If you visit Castelvetrano and don’t explore the world-famous olive industry, you’re missing out!

One example of the quality olive growers in the area is the farm of the Centonze family, Olio Centonze . When you visit, you can learn about olive farming, from cultivation to production of olive oil, and sample some of their olive oil.

Some of the olive trees are 200 years old or older, with one olive tree being 1,200 years old. The harvest is 10 days in October and is done by hand to be able to produce the still-green olives.

You may have seen olives being collected from olive groves by shaking the tree, but the olives must be mature for that to work, which is why collecting them by hand is done here.

Also, harvesting by hand means the olives that are ready can be taken while those that aren’t ready can be left on the tree.

All the olives are used, though not all are sold as olives. Many are pressed, including the pit which contains oil.

When you visit, they will take you through an olive oil tasting, so you can try different varieties as well as some of the foods they produce.

The Castelvetrano olives have a rich, almost buttery taste that won me over years ago when a recipe I was making called for them. Needless to say, I had to bring some of their exquisite products home, but nothing beats visiting and seeing the trees heavy with olives.

My tour with Exodus Travels brought us there on the Sicily Food Adventure , and it was an amazing opportunity since I didn’t find this option in my guidebook! Throughout my travels with them, we got to try so many places that embodied the local flavor of Sicily.

But there is more to Castelvetrano than just olives. We also took a trip out to the Paceco salt flats. This coastal wetlands area is a haven for migratory birds and is managed by the World Wildlife Fund.

Something unique that you might not expect here are the old star mills, also known as Dutch mills – yes, windmills! These windmills pump water between basins for salt production and then are also used to grind the salt.

In addition to the uniqueness of this area, it’s an incredibly beautiful and photogenic place.

What to Eat in Castelvetrano

Have lunch and drinks along with music and dancing at Lido Zabbara. Located right on the beach, this lovely little restaurant had an incredible buffet of traditional Italian salads.

The menu had a lot of choices, but the highlight was the fresh-caught sardines that were grilled right there.

These are a specialty and not to miss in Sicily!

I shared an order of the sardines and enjoyed the buffet.

Lido Zabbara also generously served delicious local wines. After we had eaten, the festivities began! A team of musicians played and sang and led a few people from our group dancing through the restaurant.

As the restaurant sits right on the beach, a few people from our group took a swim and said the water was perfect!

Another food highlight was back at Olio Centonze – the pistachio crema. It was heavenly. I bought a jar, but I wish I'd brought home three. It’s hard to find authentic products from Sicily online, but even if you do, shipping will be very high. The lesson? If you try something you like, buy it while you are there!

Where is Agrigento?

Agrigento is located on the southern coast of Sicily. This city is located on a plateau overlooking the sea. It was founded around 580 BCE by colonists from Greece by way of eastern Sicily as well as Crete and Rhodes.

The area also overlooks the Drago and San Biagio rivers. With this accessible location, yet protected geography, it became a notable city in the Mediterranean. This led to many impressive sites, such as temples and other impressive structures.

In fact, part of the draw of this area for tourists is its legacy of incredible archaeological sites. Not surprisingly, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What to do in Agrigento

When in Agrigento, visiting the archaeological sites is a must, specifically a visit to the Valley of Temples , built in 581 BCE.

Our guide, Dr. Salvatore Varisano, is an archaeologist and was so passionate about explaining the history of this archaeological park. The park features eight temples and other remains of structures built between 510 BCE and 430 BCE.

This was the city area of Agrigento during its height. Our guide told us that a large fortified city told invaders to stay away.

Unfortunately, the Carthaginians destroyed a lot of this area sometime around 406 BCE, killing everyone just for revenge. They didn’t care about the land or the structures.

Later, in the 6th century CE, the Christians entered the picture and believed the temples were pagan, so they had to be either destroyed or made into churches. This is another reason why not many temples survived. Many have been, and are continuing to be, reconstructed.

The statues found here are 1800 years old and are from molds. A new head would be fashioned and it would be put on top of one of the molds.

Many different heads would be on one style of mold. The heads were carved from a single piece of marble.

The memorial tombs around Agrigento were meant to be for one person. Sometimes people were looking for cheap burial places, however, and many people might end up in one tomb.

As you can see, this is one of those places where a guided walking tour is a must, especially for history buffs. Our tours were all included in the trip with Exodus Adventure Travel.

Tip: A great time to visit is when the sun is beginning to set as the temples take on a golden color.

Where to Stay in Agrigento

We stayed at Hotel Della Valle . It was lovely and spacious. I would definitely stay there again if I went back to this region of Sicily. This hotel has 2 restaurants and a pool.

Piazza Armerina

Where is piazza armerina.

Piazza Armerina is located in the south-central part of Sicily in the province of Enna.

Although this area has been populated for centuries, two time periods really defined its history.

The first is the Roman era with the construction of the Villa Romana del Casale.

The second is the destruction of the old Piazza by William I of Sicily and repopulation during the time of William II who brought colonists from northern Italy (also known at the time as Lombardy).

This repopulation by the Lombards of Sicily means that the language spoken here has a slightly different dialect than the surrounding areas.

What to do in Piazza Armerina

The most noted site in Piazza Armerina is the Villa Romana del Casale .

This villa was constructed in the fourth century CE as a hunting lodge by a Roman patrician on the location of an older villa rustica.

The key attractions at the Villa are incredibly preserved Roman mosaics, which are spread over 37,670 square feet.

Although you can appreciate the beauty of the mosaics without one, a guided tour is a must so you can learn about the history of Villa Romana del Casale.

This is a collection of the finest mosaics in all of the Roman world, and so you want to have a guide with you so you can appreciate them in all their glory.

Piazza Armerina has a small town you can visit. We had lunch at a local spot and it was wonderful.

Where is Ragusa?

Like many other locations in Sicily, Ragusa is a picturesque hilltop town. Located in the southeast part of the island, this is a town with a strong Baroque influence and that makes it one of the most beautiful towns in all of Italy.

Its inland location gave it access to a lot of rock that was used to construct many of the buildings in Ragusa. This unique quality is part of the reason that it is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Val di Noto.

What to do in Ragusa

If you love Baroque-style architecture, Ragusa will be a dream come true. The town has more than 50 Baroque-style churches, most of which were constructed with local stone. Eighteen of the buildings are protected by UNESCO.

One of the buildings that is a must-see in this beautiful town is the Duomo of San Georgio .

It has a variety of chapels, crypts, and stunning statues, paintings, and stained glass windows. Even if you just wander around the outside, this building is an impressive work of art in its own right.

If you’re looking for a different type of experience, in the countryside near Ragusa, you can visit a family-run farm in the area. On the farm tour that I took, the main feature was their cheese-making demonstration, and of course a cheese tasting with mozzarella and ricotta.

This will be some of the best Buffalo Mozzarella you’ve ever tasted, if not the best! The outside is made with buffalo milk, and the inside with cow’s milk.

We learned that ricotta is made with the leftover whey after mozzarella is made. Both the mozzarella and ricotta are flavorful, with a perfect texture.

What to Eat

The highlights for me were the foods I got to try at the farm. The Buffalo Mozzarella was fantastic, and so was the cannoli with filling made from their fresh-made ricotta.

One of the most unique options to try is Ulibbo liqueur, which I am kicking myself for not buying at the farm! Ulibbo is a liqueur made with olive oil and carob, with a hint of the flavor of myrtle leaves. This is such a unique – and uniquely Sicilian – drink!

Where is Noto?

Noto is in the southeastern part of Sicily, closer to the shore than Ragusa. Like many other locations, Noto went through a series of cultures that settled there.

In Roman times, legend has it that Hercules stayed in the city after his seventh labor, and Daedalus stayed there following his flight over the Ionian Sea.

Subsequently, Noto was under the control of the Muslims, where it was the final Islamic stronghold in Sicily to fall to the Christians.

The old town, Noto Antica, is located on Mount Alvernia, however, that isn’t the city that you explore today. In 1693, an earthquake destroyed Noto, so the city you would explore today is from the early 1700s. You can actually visit the once stunning Noto Antica, the medieval city that lies in ruins, not far from Noto.

What to do in Noto

Noto was such a beautiful city to explore. Most of the palaces and churches were built with golden yellow limestone for its flexibility. When the sun begins to set, you can see how that gorgeous yellow color reflects the light.

While there’s plenty to see, don’t discount just strolling around the town of Noto, as it is one of the most beautiful historic city centers in all of Sicily.

Here are some don’t-miss sights in Noto.

Walk up the steps of the bell tower of San Carlo al Corso. The views of the city are spectacular from here.

Note: The walk up the steps is very narrow and, of course, steep. If you are claustrophobic, this might not be for you.

To experience the vibrant life of Noto, wander around the market. The fresh produce that you’ll find here is incredible.

There’s also fresh seafood, spices, nuts and more. It’s also a great place for people watching as the locals go about their everyday shopping.

Looking for a photo spot that embodies Noto? Head for the Royal Gate of Noto (Porta Reale). This huge and stately arch was built to honor King Ferdinand of Borbone.

Make sure to look for the sculptures at the top of the arch: the tower (for strength), the dog (for loyalty), and the pelican (for self-sacrifice).

Noto is also a fun place to do some shopping as there are quite a few shops with local products.

Finally, while you are in the area it is worth heading out to the ancient ruins of Noto Antica. It is a fascinating look into the past of this area before the earthquake, and it gives you an appreciation of the major effort that it took to relocate the old city to its modern location.

What to Eat in Noto

One of the best treats that you can get, especially on a hot day, is a granita. These treats are a mixture of crushed ice with fruits or nuts and sugar. Most places that have granitas will have a variety of flavors, so there’s something for everyone.

Can’t decide? No worries! Get more than one flavor! If you want a true Sicilian experience, order it the traditional way with brioche sweet bread.

Where is Catania

Catania is located along the east coast of Sicily, almost exactly halfway between the northern and southern points.

One of the key influences in the geography of this area is that Catania is at the foot of Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe. It’s also the tallest of the active volcanoes in Europe at almost 11,000 feet. It’s easy to see why the name of Mount Etna comes from an ancient Greek term meaning “I burn”.

What to do in Catania

One of the oldest and largest fish markets in all of Italy, La Pescheria, can be found in Catania.

It is open in the mornings daily, except Sunday, and is everything you would imagine an Italian marketplace to be like with fishermen calling to customers and gesturing to their fine catch of fish.

There’s also a wide variety of fruits and vegetables for sale from the nearby villages. The fish market is one of the main attractions so it will probably be busy, but I think that adds to the fun!

Just walking around the downtown area of Catania is nice, as well. The Basilica is beautiful.

Another option for a way to spend a relaxing day is at the Gambino Winery for a wine tasting and lunch. This winery is located on the side of Mount Etna and is surrounded by beautiful scenery and is absolutely worth visiting.

Staying in Catania as we did and taking a road trip to Mt. Etna and the winery worked out so well.

Visiting Etna and the winery were a couple of the best things we did while in Sicily. I was glad Exodus found the best way to fit it all in!

If you prefer a more active day at Mount Etna, you can explore some of the hiking trails. Depending on which crater you choose, the hike will take around 1-2 hours and is 3 miles or less.

For the ultimate relaxation day, head on over to the Esagono Beach Club .  We found this beach club on our last day in Catania. It was beautiful, right on the beach with pools and chairs, with a wonderful onsite restaurant. You can pay for the day and it was so inexpensive. We went during a less crowded time of year, so peak season may be more expensive.

You can even rent a small room where you can change and shower, relax, and watch TV to take a break from the sun. I would love to spend a day here relaxing if I go back to Catania! Though the beaches are rocky, it's still beautiful.

What to Eat in Catania

If you’re looking for some of the best authentic Sicilian pasta and pizza, swing by Ristorante Maré . Their fried calamari is a specialty. It’s so tender and perfectly crisp.

This is the restaurant right next door to the beach club. Order Pasta alla Norma, a Sicilian specialty, or anything with seafood.

The Linguine with Clam Sauce was wonderful. They also had one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve ever eaten!

Where to stay in Catania

We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton . The rooms were spacious, the hotel had a pool, and it was convenient to restaurants. Though you couldn't walk to the downtown area, you could easily grab an Uber.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the weather like in Sicily?

Although the weather can be wonderfully mild, Sicily does have a wet season and a dry season. The rainy months are between November and April. You’ll find warm summertime temperatures in July and August. For the best weather, May and June in the late spring and September and October in the fall are perfect.

Is it easy to find English speakers in Sicily?

English is often taught as a second language in schools in Sicily. Especially among the younger generations, you’ll find people who can speak English. In addition, places that cater to tourism often have people around who can help translate, if needed.

What currency is accepted in Sicily?

Like Italy and much of Europe, the euro is the accepted form of currency. Most places will also accept credit cards, but for smaller shops or restaurants, you’ll want to ask first.

Good Walking Shoes

Good walking shoes are always a good idea. Sicily is such a beautiful place and still retains characteristics of centuries gone by with many cities having cobblestone streets.

These super comfortable leather sneakers were my go-to shoes the whole time I was in Sicily. In addition to being comfortable, you can wear them with just about anything.

Power Converter

Make sure to bring a converter so you can power your electronics. This is the one I use everywhere. I like that it has twin USB ports because one converter allows me to charge everything I might bring with me.

Restaurant Hours

When planning your day, keep in mind that many restaurants take an afternoon break. Lunch hours will be from noon to around 3:30 PM, but dinner service won’t start until 7:30 PM and then goes until 11 PM.

You can find snacks to tide you over, of course, but you’ll want to think ahead when planning any main meals and eat on Sicily time like a local!

Want more information about an area? Look for QR codes at some monuments and churches. With your cell phone, you can hold up the phone’s camera to the QR code, click the link, and pull up more information about the location.

Religious Buildings

Modesty in religious buildings is an important part of visiting Sicily. Make sure to cover any bare shoulders or thighs with a scarf or sarong when visiting. Also, make sure not to interrupt a church service. Should you arrive when one has already started, enter quietly.

9 of the best things to do with kids in Sicily, Italy

Storybook beaches , hissing volcanoes and granita in spades: Sicily offers what every kid dreams of.

Mountains of adventures on this swashbuckling island in Italy fire young imaginations and keep all ages busy for days. SSicily'scoastline alone ducks and dives for an extraordinary 1500km (930 miles) around clandestine coves and pirate-esque sea caves, strips of powder-white sand and volcanic-black beach, sun-spangled salt pans and craggy headlands awash with ancient ruins waiting to be explored.

And when mainland Sicily exhausts, boats of all shapes and sizes yo-yo across the water to 15 more go-slow, action-packed islands. The only hitch? Choosing which nugget of paradise to play on.

A small toddler wanders around in a public square on a sunny day

Is Sicily good for kids?

In a country where bambini (children) are like royalty, families can expect an overwhelmingly warm welcome everywhere they go in Sicily. Such heart-warming hospitality goes a long way in compensating for the lack of facilities those traveling with babies and tots will encounter at some point on their trip.

Even in main cities like Palermo and Catania , nappy-changing facilities in museums and highchairs in restaurants and cafes are rare. Bring your own hook-on table seat for restaurant dining and a portable mat to change diapers (nappies) on a park bench, the beach, wherever necessity requires. On the upside, Sicilians won't bat an eyelid at you baring a baby's bum or breastfeeding in public.

Few trattorias and restaurants offer a dedicated children's menu, but pasta usually features on every primi (first course) menu. Order a mezza porzione (half portion), or ask for pasta al pomodoro (pasta in tomato sauce) or pasta in bianco (pasta with olive oil). Few children will say no to a typical Sicilian cannolo oozing creamy ricotta or a sweet brioche bun dunked in a bowl of mulberry or mint granita.

In towns, cobbled streets, crazy traffic, parked cars blocking badly maintained pavements, and incessant steps and staircases are exhausting – often impossible – to navigate with a pram or pushchair. Don't leave that baby carrier or front sling at home.

On Trenitalia trains, kids under 15 ride for free with an adult. Bus tickets cost the same for everyone, irrespective of age – babies and tots perched on laps don't pay. Reduced fares for Liberty Lines ferries and hydrofoils kick in for children aged 4 to 11 years; three and under are free.

A family of two adults and two small children wander along a path in an inland village, Sicily

Where is best in Sicily for kids?

Teen-clad families will love the frenetic buzz of Palermo , where souk-like markets such as  Mercato del Ballarò redefine street theater and mafia-themed street art by Sicilian artists makes noise in squares and back alleys. The fact the city is just a one-hour train ride to port-town  Trapani , from where hydrofoils zip to the beach-laced Egadi Islands, only heightens the family allure.

Families with younger children seeking a seaside base are spoilt with their pick of three coastlines: the northern Tyrrhenian Coast, where beach resort Cefalù enchants with a huge sweep of sandy gold spiaggia (beach) and laid-back old town; the Ionian Coast in the shade of iconic Mt Etna ; and Mediterranean shores, with the Riserva Naturale Torre Salsa protecting one of SSicily'smost isolated beaches and the temples and ruins of AAgrigento'sUNESCO-listed  Valley of the Temples to explore Indiana Jones-style. With their laid-back vibe, little motorized traffic and picture-postcard beaches in spades, Sicily's Egadi and Aeolian islands are paradise on earth for families seeking a bucket-and-spade escape.

Best things to do in Sicily with babies and toddlers

Laze on a taormina piazza or in the shade of an english garden.

Sicilian dolce vita at its giddiest, chic resort town Taormina is a hot spot for families. Laze on a cafe terrace while tots kid around on the black-and-white checkerboard of car-free Piazza IX Aprile. Retreat to peaceful gardens at Villa Comunale and swoon over the spectacular view of Mt Etna and the Ionian Coast while the baby sleeps. Thrill older tots with boat trips to the magically blue Grotta Azzurra sea cave, dolphin-watching cruises and a funivia (cable car) ride down to the beach.

Hit the beach running

Sicily has a beach to suit every age, mood and day of the year. Lifeguards operate on many larger beaches during the official summer season , June to September.

Salt flats with two windmills

Best things to do in Sicily with young kids

Explore the spellbinding world of sicilian puppetry.

Magical sorcerers, warriors, knights, princesses and bloodthirsty Saracen warriors captivate all ages at Palermo's fascinating puppet museum inside former pawn house Palazzo Branciforte . Pair the exhibit with a puppet show at Teatro dei Pupi di Mimmo Cuticchio and a guided tour of its lab across the street, where puppets are still lovingly handmade. Catania and Syracuse also have traditional puppet theaters.

Track down a roving grattatella cart

Post-Palermo puppet show, keep the kids cool with a beaker of old-fashioned grattatella – ice shavings, scraped by hand from a block of ice and doused in fruit syrup in front of your eyes – at a pushcart on the street. Track down Grattatella all’Antica no Zu’Vicè at Mercato del Capo and Grattatella da Tonino on Quattro Canti .

Harvest salt near Trapani

Some of Italy's best salt comes from shimmering saline (salt pans) coloring the coast pink between Trapani and Marsala in western Sicily. Learn about salt production, enjoy a guided salt pan walk and try your hand at harvesting at Saline e Infersa , 25km (15 miles) south of Trapani on the scenic Via del Sal (Salt Road).

A father and daughter chat as they walk down a volcanic path

Best things to do in Sicily with tweens and teens

Summit mt etna, europe's largest active volcano.

Whether you get up by 4WD, on foot or cable car , it's impossible not to be awe-struck by Mt Etna and its after-dark fireworks. Consider overnighting at Rifugio Sapienza by the bottom cable car station, with family rooms sleeping up to five. Rent mountain bikes here, book guided e-biking ascents and trekking tours.

Delve into ancient Greek history

Outside of Greece, nowhere else in Europe evokes the ancient world with such drama or panache: Sicily's ancient Greek temples and amphitheaters are unparalleled. Treat your tweens and teens to a larger-than-life history lesson at Selinunte and Segesta in western Sicily, or at the  Valley of the Temples in Agrigento overlooking the Med. The icing on the cake: a compelling theater performance beneath the stars in an ancient Greek amphitheater during SSyracuse's Festival del Teatro Greco , mid-May to late June. Bag gold dust tickets months in advance.

Unearth contemporary art on a farm

On the Mediterranean Coast, from Agrigento's awe-inspiring temples drive 15 minutes north to unearth dazzling wall murals, sculptures and outdoor installations by contemporary artists at  Farm Cultural Park . A grassroots community initiative, the arts project fills the streets, squares and courtyards of a semi-abandoned village. Catch movies, exhibitions, creative labs, all sorts.

Dare tastebuds to try new flavors

Convince the kids to trade "lay safe" pasta for a dare-if-you-try pani câ mèusa (bread bun filled with calf spleen and lung), a skewer stick of stigghiola (lamb or goat intestines) or octopus barbecued on a flaming grill at a street market.

Planning tips

April to June, September and October are the best months for climbing Mt Etna. The volcano can be snow-covered in winter, and unbearably hot and crowded in July and August. Pack proper hiking shoes or boots.

Away from the coast, consider staying in an agriturismo (farm stay). There might be farm animals to observe and possibly pet, fresh produce to harvest depending on the season, and mountains of green space to run wild in.

Bring water shoes for the kids to cross sun-scorched pebbles into the water comfortably – walking barefoot can be akin to crossing burning coals.

Cefalù was originally a fishing village but is now one of the major draws on Sicily’s north coast.

Relaxed old-school glamour: springtime in Cefalù, Sicily

With its extraordinary architecture, maze-like streets and ever-present sunshine, it’s no accident that so many film-makers have used the town as a location

I was eating homemade crostata (jam tart) on a roof terrace in the Sicilian town of Cefalù and reading about Helius, the ancient Greek god of the sun. Sicily is supposedly the inspiration for the deity’s island in The Odyssey and this makes perfect sense – with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Helius would like it here. The island is especially lovely in spring, when it’s quieter, cooler and more peaceful than in the scorching summer. Cefalù is an ancient fishing village almost exactly halfway along Sicily’s north coast. It’s prized by Italians as one of the island’s loveliest beach-side places. Barbara De Gaetani, a licensed tour guide who grew up here, told me the allure of the place is difficult to explain: “Many other places are gorgeous but not as seductive. You can feel life flowing here, and it’s no accident that many film-makers have used the town as a location.”

Cefalu, Sicily, map

Compared with Sicily’s ritzier spots, to me it feels more authentic and has a sort of relaxed old-school glamour. It’s also easy to reach by train from Palermo (about 50 minutes); from Catania, on the other side of the island, it takes around four hours, including a change in Messina.

The place is full of extraordinary Arab Norman architecture and, as with most Italian towns, I found there were almost too many beautiful buildings and churches to take in as I wandered slowly through the streets towards the cathedral in the central square. Inside, famed 12th-century Byzantine golden mosaics cover the domed ceiling. Up close they are even more extraordinary than they look in the pictures, and still shine brightly all these years later.

Cannoli pastries are perfect with an espresso.

I spent long moments looking up at radiant Christ Pantocrator (the Almighty) as he gazed down serenely, his fingers held up in a complicated arrangement that signifies “Jesus Christ”. According to legend, King Ruggero Secondo (Roger II) built the duomo after being saved from a terrible storm at sea. He’d knelt on the deck of his ship and prayed for help, promising to erect a cathedral to God’s glory if he made it back alive. After washing up safe and sound on the beach of Cefalù he set about keeping his end of the bargain.

After all that divinity, I continued through the maze of streets in search of something more prosaic, the lavatoio medievale, a washhouse built in 1514. Steps down from the street led to a series of low troughs, each with a stone scrubbing surface at one end. River water flows through bronze lion heads to fill the troughs before heading out to sea, and the place was still used well into the 20th century. I walked around the troughs getting my feet wet, imagining the washerwomen of the past, and feeling grateful for washing machines. A short walk away is the picturesque Porta Pescara gate, which frames the beach beautifully.

Behind the town is a steep cliff called the Rocca di Cefalù. The path was closed for maintenance when I was here but it’s open again now and a brisk 45-minute uphill climb offers panoramic vistas over the town and surrounding coast. There’s a ninth-century Temple of Diana on the way up (wear decent footwear as the path can be slippery).

One of the things I like most about Cefalù is that the beach is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the old town. And unusually for Sicily, it’s a generous crescent of soft golden sand, rather than a standard rocky beach. Perfect for bambini, it’s one of the reasons the town is so popular with Italian tourists. In spring you’ll need a jumper and light jacket as you walk along the promenade, and while the sea remains chilly, as a cold-water swimming addict, I enjoyed the blast of endorphins when I plunged beneath the waves.

The Palatine Chapel in Ventimiglia castle, Castelbuono.

Another day I walked 30 minutes east along the coast road to swim at Cala Kalura, a sweet pebbly cove with swimming-pool ladders down into the sea. If you get lucky, like I did, you might see a pair of kingfishers hunting for fish as the dusk falls.

The Cefalù food scene can be a little touristy but there are some lovely places. My favourite was La Brace , where the service is friendly and the menu includes traditional swordfish rolls and other delights. At the far fancier Triscele , I ate beautifully presented gamberi crud i (raw prawns) served in a swirl of citrus risotto on the romantic terrace.

Some of the best ice-cream in town can be found at L’Angolo delle Dolcezze along with cannoli , the dangerously addictive cigar-shaped sweet pastries filled with ricotta. Cassata , a cake layered with ricotta and covered in violently green icing, is a traditional treat, but for me nothing beats cartocci , doughnut spirals, again filled with the ubiquitous ricotta or, even better, with custard. Bar Duomo on the Cathedral Square is a great spot to enjoy one with a coffee and some relaxed people watching by day.

Cala Kalura … a 30-minute walk out of town.

At night, it’s the place for an Aperol spritz before dinner; I also enjoyed an aperitif of Castellucci Miano , an award-winning straw-coloured white wine, on the sea-view terrace of Le Petit Tonneau .

I stayed at Agrodolce B&B (doubles from €75, two-night minimum), where the rooms are simple, the location perfect and the breakfast heavenly. Rita, the owner, radiated Sicilian warmth as she served me homemade crostata along with croissants, fruit and espresso, and encouraged me to have seconds of everything. There are plenty of other mid-range options in town, but for a splurge, Le Calette (doubles from €323 B&B), on the coast east of town, offers luxury suites and stunning views.

On Rita’s recommendation, I caught the 7.45am bus from the station, winding up mountain roads towards Castelbuono, a small town famed for its funghi di bosco , mushrooms foraged from the forests. It was a vertiginous route and I was very glad not to be driving. Rita had suggested – insisted actually – that I come here to visit the Palatine Chapel inside Ventimiglia castle. Built in the late 17th century, it contains the skull of Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, and is gloriously overdecorated: bright gold walls are covered in maximalist stucco depictions of allegories and religious figures in baroque style. I spent a long time looking around, feeling dizzy and uplifted all at once.

I’d read that there were hidden paintings inside the Matrice Vecchia church on Castelbuono’s main square, but I couldn’t find the light switch and the dark steps down under the altar looked forbidding. Eventually I gave up waiting for the priest and ventured down using my phone torch.

Houses line the beach in Cefalù.

The crypt is covered with frescoes dating from the medieval ages to the Renaissance – including some alarming depictions of skeletons enthusiastically climbing out of their coffins on Judgment Day. I was glad to resurface into the sunlight, and spent a while sitting watching the donkeys walk up and down the narrow streets. They’re used as rubbish collectors because the lanes are too narrow for dustbin lorries, and looked pretty grumpy about it.

I stopped for lunch at Ristorante Nangalarruni where the charismatic owner, Giuseppe, and I argued about mushrooms. I don’t like them at all but he was adamant that if I tasted his pasta I would completely change my mind. We made a deal. He brought me s paghetti cacio, pepe e funghi di bosco and watched anxiously as I twirled my fork and took a bite. He was right: the dish changed a lifetime of bias, and remains one of the best meals I’ve eaten in Sicily. Later I caught the bus back to Cefalù and took a long siesta to sleep off all those carbs – another perfect day on Helius’s sunshine island.

We were drawn to Sicily's viral $1 homes. We ended up spending $30K for 2, but it was worth every penny.

  • Tam and Gary Holm were drawn to Sicily by the one-euro home promotion.
  • Auctions for the homes started at one euro, but the couple ended up spending a lot more.
  • They told BI they fell in love with Sicily, leading them to buy two properties.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on an interview with Tam and Gary Holm, a Californian couple who bought homes in Sambuca di Sicilia, Italy.

It's been edited for length and clarity, and timed to be released with a YouTube documentary.

Tam: I remember reading an article online in 2019 about the one-euro homes when Gary worked in England, much closer to Sicily than our hometown, Los Angeles.

I wrote to the email address provided in the article and got a response from the actual mayor of Sambuca di Sicilia. He said there were tours of the town and the houses they were selling for one euro ($1.08).

Gary: She did the tour and saw the properties, but we definitely had some doubts, like, 'Are they really selling these houses for one euro?.'

It turned out that the auctions started at a euro. We ended up bidding €5,000 for one and lost.

But we knew this town was special. I instantly fell in love. So, instead, we opted for a private sale.

We looked at maybe 10 or 15 houses, and the one we went with was special.

Tam: If you were lucky enough to get one of the one-euro houses, they did most of the paperwork for you, but there were some stipulations. You had a time limit to renovate it, had to use certain contractors, and there was a lot of guidance.

I'm glad we weren't stuck with that. However, it meant we had to figure it out all alone.

It's not like the American real-estate market.

Tam: We'd bought a couple of houses in America before, and it's a little bit different in Italy.

Gary: The way they do real estate in Italy involves getting a notaio, or a notary, essentially a lawyer who draws up a legal contract with the owner.

Tam: The ownership goes by lineage, which requires the people listed on the deed to be present with the new people wanting to buy the property.

So, in our situation, a brother and a sister were listed. While the sister was here in Sambuca, the brother lived in America and hadn't been here for a decade.

So, we had to figure out to get him to Sambuca to sign the paperwork so we could buy his house.

Gary: There was a convoluted way we could have gotten him to an embassy in Washington, DC, but it would have been a whole thing.

Luckily, it turned out that he had wanted to visit his family, and the timing, thankfully, worked out. So we were able to all be here and sign at the same time.

Tam: Meeting a guy who hadn't been home in 10 years was super fun. We all hopped in cars together to Palermo, the next biggest city, to meet with a bilingual notaio.

Related stories

Gary : The family has essentially adopted us now. They were selling their mother's home that they didn't live in; it hadn't been lived in for 20 years.

Now, every time we go to Sambuca, we have dinner with them. They're part of our family here now.

Unexpected costs

Tam: Our initial investment on the house was €19,000 ($20,581). We went in thinking we would just need to paint it nicely.

Gary: But it needed plumbing, some electrical work, etc. Then, we realized that the place right next door had just gone up for sale.

There is no land, and it's a house that shares three walls with other houses, so the only way to make the place bigger would be with one of the adjacent houses.

Tam: So, of course, we had to buy it. Then, we had to find those owners, fly back out here, and once again drive to Palermo.

Gary: That one cost us €8,000 ($8,666), so for the two we purchased, we spent €27,000 ($29,247).

It's not a ton of money, but it's not a euro or two euros.

Tam: Purchasing a property is a little different from American real estate because, instead of it being a percentage-based commission that the real-estate agent takes, they have a flat-rate fee for the notaio.

We had to do that twice — a big expense we weren't expecting.

Gary: Another big expense was that we thought we could just put a hole in the wall between the two houses.

But it turned out that one had a lower floor than the other, so the engineering side cost a lot of money.

Our whole costings were around $160,000 ($173,296).

Falling in love with Sicily

Gary: I think one of the things I fell in love with during all this was the people of Sambuca. Everyone has been super welcoming and friendly, and it's a small town that feels very international.

Tam: There are also people who have lived here for generations and generations, who are so nice, cool, and ready to make friends with people from around the world.

Gary: Everyone we have talked to in this town has had a great experience, so I think it tells you something about the people. They see the value in outsiders boosting the economy and tourism.

I think that the one-euro program was brilliant, in my opinion, because it gave some people a chance to get houses for very little money, and it brought us here.

You get to live this sort of dream; who doesn't want to have a house in Italy?

Tam: Before coming to Sambuca for the program, I'd never been to Sicily, and we knew nothing about Sicily . Absolutely nothing.

And it is so awesome. I'm kind of sad the secret is out.
