27 Cheap Destinations For 2024 With Great Weather in March

March is a great month for vacations because most of the world’s cheaper destinations have some of their nicest weather of the year this month, and they are generally not crowded anyway. The weather in the Caribbean and Central America is close to perfect in March and there are dozens of great choices in all price ranges. In fact, if you want to visit this area you might just skip to our list of the cheapest Caribbean islands .

Even if you aren’t near the Caribbean or don’t want to go to a beach, there are lots of great choices below. South America has early autumn weather in March, so some of the cities there can be great options. The Middle East and Asia also have plenty of fantastic choices with both cities and beach areas being possible on the same trip. We’ve added more information about which destinations have the best deals on all-inclusive resorts and included prices for those as well, and there are some really good deals out there in March of 2024. Hotels in many places on the list below went up in price over last year, but a surprising number of them actually came down in price and those are all noted so you can look for places that are bargains in 2024.

Important March global holidays in 2024

  • March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day (Mostly USA and Ireland)
  • March 19 – St. Joseph’s Day (public holiday in Switzerland, parts of Spain, and a few other places)
  • March 24, 25 – Holi and Holika Dahan (Large and colorful celebrations in India)
  • March 31 – Easter (Major holiday in most Western countries)

Video showing most of the places below

I recently started making Youtube videos out of the popular articles on this site so you can both read about the different options and see actual footage of them as well. Below is a video with highlights of the best places to visit in March and April.

The Americas

With the United States and Canada either being frozen or expensive (south Florida) this time of year, you’ll want to head to Latin America or the Caribbean for the best bargains with sunny and warm weather.

The Caribbean

Easter Week is March 24 to 31 in 2024 and those are popular dates in the Caribbean, but the two weeks before that are also popular for Spring Breakers from North Americans schools, so the whole month is going to be reasonably crowded in 2024.

Cancun is one of the best places to travel in March because the airport is the busiest in the entire region so it has more direct flights in from key hubs in North America and Europe than any other destination nearby. This keeps flights cheaper than to most islands, and easier to find as well. There are also some good all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun area, though they don’t offer quite the great value that those in Punta Cana (below) do.

Since Cancun is so popular and such a large area I have put together a guide to choosing where to stay in the Cancun area , which should be helpful. There are 7 different areas to choose from and depending on your tastes, some are much better than others. The room rates quoted below are for the Downtown Cancun area, which does actually have some small resorts with rooftop pools and such along with good restaurants and affordable nightlife. The other areas are at least a bit more expensive, and many are MUCH more expensive.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$36 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$112 per night for two people
  • 4-star all-inclusive hotels from: US$222 per night for two people

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

  • March avg high: 85°F/29°C
  • March avg low: 72°F/22°C
  • March avg precip: 1.0″/2.5cm

cheap international travel in march

The resort hotels along the stretch of Punta Cana beaches tend to be large, with many having well over 500 rooms to go along with multiple pools and extensive recreational facilities. Many resorts here are also very family oriented so they could be ideal for a holiday with the kids or even the extended family. Flights into the Punta Cana airport are also among the cheaper fares into the Caribbean, with many direct flights from large hubs, so this is a good choice for many types of travelers.

Honestly, the best deals in Punta Cana are at the all-inclusive hotels, many of which are run by large Spanish resort chains. Even in March you can find places starting around US$200 per night for two people, including tax. If you don’t drink alcohol you can save a bit at one of the resorts that only includes breakfast, but the all-inclusive places are so efficient that you won’t save much anyway. We also rank Punta Cana tops on our list of the best family-friendly destinations in the Caribbean for kids .

  • 3-star hotels from: US$53 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$129 per night for two people

Montego Bay, Jamaica

cheap international travel in march

If Montego Bay itself doesn’t sound perfect then you might instead consider  Negril  or  Ocho Rios , both of which are about 90 minutes from the same airport and each has a different feel. All combined there are about 500 hotels to choose from, including many all-inclusives, so it can be worth checking each of the 3 areas (that are all served by the same airport) and picking the deal that suits you best. If you want to stay in a large resort then the northern coast can be a great choice, but if you want to stay in a smaller hotel and sample some Jamaican culture, then Negril is by far the best choice of the three.

Even though Cabo is in the Tropics, the March weather is still fairly mild. The days are pleasantly warm and perfect for the beach, while the evenings are a bit chilly and you’ll want to bring a jacket or sweater. This is perfect for those of us who don’t like to sweat in the tropical evenings in the Caribbean.

If you are interested in shopping and the party scene then you’ll feel most at home near the marina in Cabo San Lucas, but if you want something quiet on an uncrowded beach, you’ll be better off almost anywhere else in the area.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

  • March avg low: 62°F/17°C
  • March avg precip: 0.1″/0.3cm

cheap international travel in march

Among the great things about Puerto Vallarta is that it has a real historic town at its core so there are good sights, interesting restaurants, and great shopping there. Hotels are spread all up and down the coast, with a new area of posh hotels well north of the airport. As you can see by the hotel prices below, there is a huge difference between a 3-star, which is often an older traditional hotel, and a 4-star, which is usually a modern chain hotel on its own section of beach. The area has an increasing number of fully all-inclusive hotels as well, some starting at very affordable rates. The Puerto Vallarta area is fun to explore and generally very safe, but all-inclusive resorts can be a great choice for many travelers as well.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$44 per night for two people

Belize is definitely one of the  cheapest Caribbean destinations , and the offshore islands actually do have quite a Caribbean feel in spite of being surrounded by Latin America. There are wonderful resorts here for those willing to spend more, but even the cheaper hotels are decent, and very good bargains even in high season.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

  • March avg high: 96°F/36°C
  • March avg precip: 0.2″/0.5cm

cheap international travel in march

Hotels here run the gamut of prices, from simple and traditional beach shacks all the way up to posh chain hotels with all the luxuries. You don’t have to spend much to enjoy the friendly towns and great March weather, but the top places are good value even at the higher rates. Like so many other places, you pretty much get what you pay for in Guanacaste. In other words, a US$200 per night resort is going to be WAY nicer than a US$95 per night hotel a couple blocks inland. The area now has quite a few all-inclusive resorts at very tempting prices, although rates seem quite high in March, 2024 for some reason.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$67 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$190 per night for two people
  • 4-star all-inclusive hotels from: US$522 per night for two people

The food, the nightlife, and the shopping are other great reasons to visit Mexico City at any time of year. Perhaps best of all, it’s all very cheap compared to most of Latin America so you can afford to splurge a bit while still keeping costs down. If you know how to speak at least some Spanish you’ll be even better off because English isn’t widely spoken outside of larger hotels and restaurants. Hotel rates in March of 2024 are looking very reasonable so this could be a great year to visit.

Cartagena, Colombia

  • March avg low: 77°F/25°C

cheap international travel in march

Another key feature about this city is that it’s a cultural destination in addition to being a great beach spot so you can explore the historic city center and include some culture on an otherwise hedonistic getaway. The beaches in the city aren’t the fluffy white sand you might dream about, but there is so much to see and do in this place that you might not notice. As long as you can get an affordable flight, Cartagena could be the cheapest beach destination in the Caribbean, at least as long as you don’t need a high-rise hotel on the sand. There are some really nice all-inclusive resorts at good prices, but overall Punta Cana is similar in price and probably better value.

Most people who visit Lima from far away will do it as part of a tour of South America, and in that context it’s a great stop for at least a few days. By the way, the rainy season in  Cusco  goes on in March, so the trails can sometimes be cut off, although many people go anyway. Hotels in March of 2024 are great bargains compared to previous years so this could be a great time to include Peru in a trip of South America.

As of late 2023, Argentina is once again in the throes of a financial and currency crisis with prices shooting up and the currency going down by just as much every month. The great news for international visitors is that Buenos Aires is now insanely cheap, especially if you bring US currency or Euros and exchange money at the “Blue dollar” when you arrive. It sounds sketchy but it’s actually just part of life in Argentina these days. Still, do some research on changing money at the blue rate and you’ll be in for one of the cheapest holidays of your life.

Bariloche, Argentina

  • March avg high: 66°F/19°C
  • March avg low: 39°F/4°C

cheap international travel in march

Bariloche is also unusual in that it was once a German community and there are still many chocolate shops around town as a reminder. The value here is excellent and it will provide a nice contrast from your other stops in South America.

You might also consider including  Mendoza  on your trip, which is the main wine region of Argentina, and also good value. A short side trip (by air) to Iguazu Falls can be wonderful if you’ve got at least two extra days. Nominal hotel rates in 2024 are looking pretty high in March so remember that if you pay in cash after you’ve exchanged it in Argentina you can basically be paying half the prices mentioned below.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$95 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$167 per night for two people

Rio de Janeiro seems a bit cheaper in 2024 than it had been in the last few years as hotel deals seem easy to find. Budget travelers can still do well here if they stay inland from the beaches or even in the city center area, but those who want to participate in the good life in Copacabana and Ipanema most days will be paying more for it. On the other hand, petty crime is an issue in this city and tourists can be targeted so do a bit of research and be alert in order to stay safe.

From November through March there are literally no European cities that could qualify as having “great weather,” except for the Canary Islands, mentioned just below. So during the winter Europe is all about cultural tourism, and lower hotel prices make it especially appealing for those who like to stretch their travel budgets and avoid crowds at the same time.

Compared to Europe this island is a relative bargain, which helps make it popular pretty much all year round. Needless to say, prices can range quite a bit from one part of the island to another so it’s good to stay somewhere central if possible so you have the most options for food and drink. Most of the crowd in March will be retired refugees escaping the late winter from northern Europe, so don’t expect much nightlife.

Marrakech, Morocco

There are amazing numbers of hotels in Marrakech and it’s good to be aware that the bottom price level will usually be for something that is very shabby by European standards so many will want to pay a bit more for something nicer. Still, things tend to be cheap in all of Morocco so it’s a good overall destination.

Cairo, Egypt

When Egypt is struggling to attract tourists you might find that you can get a fantastic deal at a 3- or 4-star hotel, since they tend to lower prices when demand is weak while the cheaper places generally hold steady. Food tends to be very cheap in Cairo as well, as long as you avoid the restaurants in those fancy hotels.

Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

Many people add a trip to Sharm el-Sheikh to a visit to Cairo, but more people are just skipping the chaos of Cairo and coming here instead. This is an area that is known for amazing value beach resorts along with diving and other activities. You won’t find a better beach hotel deal anywhere. Sharm had totally fallen out of fashion with non-Egyptian visitors for a couple years after a mysterious plane crash, but now the crowds are back and prices are close to normal for this bargain beach destination.

Cape Town, South Africa

  • March avg low: 58°F/14°C

cheap international travel in march

Cape Town is relatively cheap once you get there, so the main problem for most people is that it’s quite expensive to fly in. Since most people coming from longer distances tend to combine Cape Town with a safari or other activities then the airfare can still be worthwhile for a longer visit, even if it’s too expensive to just pop down for a few days.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$62 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$117 per night for two people

Middle East

March is cool and even a bit rainy in most of the Middle East. An exception is  Dubai  and  Abu Dhabi , which both have perfect sunny weather. However, Abu Dhabi isn’t cheap enough to make the cut, and Dubai is below.

  • March avg high: 83°F/28°C
  • March avg low: 64°F/18°C

Hotels and restaurants in Dubai can be found in a very wide range of prices. Many independent hotels offer great value, including the many that are nightly apartment rentals rather than small hotel rooms. And finding cheap restaurants is easy as long as you follow the locals rather than the other tourists. Alcohol is extremely expensive in bars, which are only attached to hotels. Those who like a drink should consider stopping at the famous Dubai Duty Free on the way in, where you can buy two liters at low prices.

March is a good month to visit many parts of Asia, although some cities like Bangkok, Saigon, and Siem Reap are already too hot during the day for most people. Those looking for hot countries in March will find plenty to choose from in Southeast Asia.

Phuket, Thailand

  • March avg high: 92°F/33°C
  • March avg low: 76°F/24°C

Phuket is quite a large island with many different beaches on its edges, most of which are quite expensive and lined with posh resorts, so if you are on a low budget you are going to have to choose a beach carefully or even stay in Phuket Town, which is inland. Still, food and drink prices are quite low and it’s a fun place if you find the right area for your style. In 2024 we are seeing many hotel bargains so you should at least be able to find something decent a few blocks or more in the Patong Beach area, which is very central with plenty of cheap food options as well.

One thing that Boracay Island lacks is super-cheap hotels, but many people prefer to NOT have the backpacker crowd mixed in. Still, hotel value is excellent, especially considering that pretty much every hotel on the island is within a 2-minute walk of the sand, or it’s up in the hills with gorgeous views. Those looking for a new place to relax in March should consider Boracay, at least until it really catches on in a few years. The whole island was closed to tourists for half of 2018 to repair the infrastructure, so it is in much better shape now.

Hotels in Pokhara are incredibly cheap by most standards, and they’ve built so many new ones that prices are likely to stay low for years to come. Food and drinks are also very good deals here so it’s a great place to chill out for a while. The trekking tours can be expensive, however, so if you want to go on multi-day trips with guides you are going to spend a decent chunk of money compared to just staying in town.

Chiang Mai is one of the world’s great budget destinations, especially with its hotels but also with its food, drinks, and shopping. It’s very popular for those spending a month or more in the region because it’s much less hectic than Bangkok or other big cities while being cheaper as well. You can get by on very little in this area if you need to, but paying more will often get you much better quality that’s worth it. The cheaper hotels in Goa (and all over India) tend to be very disappointing, so it’s almost always better to splurge a bit and get something with consistent very good reviews.

Hi, I’m trying to go to Egypt at the end of March (anytime between the 19th-31st). When do you think is the best time I can find the best airfare prices? I’m traveling from the US. Thanks!

' src=

For longer flights like the US to Cairo it seems that the cheapest fares are earlier than they used to be. In other words, most likely the fares you’ll see right now for March flights will be close to the minimum and they will stay around the same price until December or January, when they are likely to start creeping up. I’d recommend doing a fare alert on kayak or airfarewatchdog and they can email you if the fare goes down for your dates. If it doesn’t go down between now and late November I would think about buying anyway. I hope this helps. -Roger

From year to year in early March there is the same question, how to congratulate a woman on International Women’s Day? Undoubtedly, the most non-trivial surprise will be a trip to a country she has long dreamed of visiting. Such a gift no woman will not forget for a long time. In order not to spoil the surprise and not to ferret out the destination, the most winning option will be a vacation on the beach , as absolutely any member of the fair sex will be delighted by such a gift.

The warmest, if not the hottest weather will please holidaymakers on the island of Phu Quoc. The coastal waters are heated to +27 ° C, and the air temperature is at a mark of +33 ° C. You should go to the north only for excursion and educational purposes. Despite the fact that it is dry enough, the temperature will not let you swim.

But do not neglect the safety: you can sunbathe only in the morning and evening hours, be sure to use sunscreen and keep your hat on. If in the first half of the month there can still be rare rains, then closer to the end – the rains are minimized. In Thailand, exactly as in Vietnam, for bathing is more suitable for the southern part of the country.

Very beautiful and unusual festivals are held in Thailand in March. At the festival of tattoos you can decorate the body with a magical sign, and admire the art of combat at the festival of Thai boxing. A month-by-month guide to the cheapest flights to international destinations

Jordan Waller

Airfare prices change regularly throughout the year, but if you know where to look, it's possible to find a bargain to even the most popular destinations — especially if you're able to be flexible with your travel dates.

TPG reached out to Skyscanner to trawl through their vast amount of airfare data and give you a comprehensive look at the destinations around the world that typically cost less to fly to. Whether you're looking to depart from the United States or from the United Kingdom, plenty of sweet spots can be found.

Below are destinations that are consistently priced low throughout the year and destinations that regularly pop up with cheaper airfares during specific months.

*All pricing taken from economy class, round-trip bookings made on Skyscanner for travel in 2022.

Which destinations are the cheapest to fly to year-round?

While certain destinations can be cheaper on average throughout the whole year, others fluctuate, and not always in the ways you might think.

For example, if you're based in the U.S. and dream of flying to Europe for your next vacation, the best prices for most European locations were in April, May and June, according to Skyscanner's data on the average cost of a return economy flight. This is true, according to that data, even though this time is normally considered a peak travel time for the region and coincides with the U.K. school holidays.

However, while you may be able to pick up cheaper airfare during this time, prices for hotels and attractions may be higher during these periods.

Meanwhile, the average return flights to London were at their lowest at the beginning of the year, between January and March. Note this can be a notoriously drizzly and cold time to visit the U.K. capital (though, let's face it, England isn't really known for its great weather at the best of times).

The next cheapest period to visit London from the U.S. was perhaps surprisingly between October and December. Again, this is during the colder months, but still great news for those looking for a potential Christmas escape to take advantage of some of the Thanksgiving and fall breaks in the U.S.

For travelers based in the U.K., we found airfares to destinations in Italy to be consistently among the top 10 cheapest throughout the year. Despite its popularity among British travelers, Greece didn't break the top 10 once for the cheapest average airfares.

Cheapest places to fly from January through March

Traveling from the us.

January through March saw the lowest average prices of the year for flights departing the U.S. to London and Paris, with the French capital coming in a smidgen cheaper to get to. If you take advantage of the convenient Eurostar links between these two European cities, you could easily hit both of these destinations during this period for less than you'd pay any other time.

Related: The best hotels in London

If you decide to do both, we suggest returning to the U.S. from Paris to avoid the U.K.'s notoriously high fees and taxes on airfares.

Average airfare prices to Puerto Rico from the U.S. were among the cheapest during these months in 2022. January is also an ideal time to visit Puerto Rico, thanks to the dryer winter months with moderate temperatures and far less rainfall than you'll see during other times in the year.

Closer to home, this period is also a great time to visit Mexico , where you can enjoy much dryer and cooler temperatures.

Traveling from the UK

If you don't mind wrapping up to stay warm, you can bag plenty of great deals to Europe departing the U.K., but be warned that some places can be chilly during the winter months.

For example, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, can see temperatures dropping as low as 34 Fahrenheit (1.3 Celsius) in January and only just peaking over 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) in March.

Riga, Latvia, sees even lower temperatures, regularly plummetting to around 24 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) between January and February and peaking at around 33 Fahrenheit (1 Celsius) in March.

If you're looking for sun, Palma, Mallorca, is your best bet. The first months of the year generally still see days filled with sunshine. It won't necessarily be hot enough to top up your tan and enjoy a beach break, though — temperatures mainly float around the 61 Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) mark.

Cheapest places to fly from April through June

If you're considering a European vacation , these months pulled up cheaper airfares than any other, according to Skyscanner data, with good average prices for Spain, France, Portugal and the U.K. While each of these locations will begin seeing sunnier weather throughout June, you can still expect blues skies and bouts of sunshine during April too.

It is, however, worth doing some research before you book — U.K. schools break for Easter in the first half of April and again at the beginning of June for the summer half-term break. During these times, you can expect many European locations to be busy with family vacations and often see soaring accommodation prices. If you can, we'd recommend booking outside of these weeks to save on both money and time spent queuing due to increased numbers of other tourists.

Looking for something more far-flung? Tokyo has great average airfare prices during the spring, and if you time it properly, you could also witness Japan's beautiful cherry blossom season, which typically peaks in early April.

This is one of the prime times to visit Italy and take in the sights before its summer hits full throttle in July, bringing with it almost prohibitively high temperatures. Visits between April and June are perfect for soaking up the sun, alfresco dining and diving into this country's rich history.

Sicily, in particular, is excellent at this time of the year. However, note that it might get a little too hot for some as June approaches, especially if this year's wildfires and extreme weather are anything to go by.

cheap international travel in march

If Dubrovnik, Croatia, has been on your list for some time but now feels a little too in vogue and expensive, you could also get good prices on flights to Zadar . This charming seaside city is situated on the Dalmatian Coast and is known for its fantastic restaurant and dining scene, with an array of stunning nearby national parks.

Cheapest places to fly from July through September

For those yearning to visit Canada outside of its harsh winter periods, July through September can be an ideal time to enjoy a summer vacation. Toronto bursts to life during the Toronto Jazz Festival and Toronto Fringe Festival in July — perfect for culture vultures.

You can get good prices on flights to Mexico between July and September. While these months bring slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures, they also mark Mexico's rainy season, typically from late August to September.

Conversely, if you've always had Peru on your bucket list, this can be a great time to visit.

It's the country's driest season — fantastic conditions if you plan to hike to Machu Picchu. According to Skyscanner's data, you can typically find good prices on flights to Peru during these months. However, note that if you plan to travel to Machu Picchu from Lima, you must either get a connecting flight to Cusco or take a long bus ride.

September can be one of the best periods to visit Ireland during its shoulder season. Along with good deals on airfare, you'll also typically see cheaper accommodation costs and fewer crowds. The weather can also be fairly mild during these months with good dry spells, though it likely won't be shorts and T-shirt weather.

Mid-August through to September also sees much milder weather in Italy and can be a preferable month to visit than July and August, which are the hottest months of the year and the most crowded with tourists.

Elsewhere in Europe, July onward is a great time to take advantage of good weather in France.

According to Skyscanner data, Rodez, France, is one of the cheapest places on average to fly to from the U.K. during these months. It also sees high temperatures and lots of sunshine. The mercury is typically around 77 Fahrenheit (25 Celsius) in July and August before dropping off to a more manageable 69.8 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) average in September.

Cheapest places to fly from October through December

There are great prices on airfares to Mexico from October through December, and these months are also a particularly intriguing time to visit.

Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations typically take place Nov. 1-2. The festival is an opportunity to honor deceased family members, and there is a wide array of celebrations throughout Mexico, making this a memorable and enlightening time to visit and learn about Mexican traditions.

cheap international travel in march

If you keep your eyes peeled, it's also possible to get low-priced airfares to Iceland, allowing for a festive visit to Reykavik to take in the snow alongside a healthy jolt of Christmas spirit.

Visit London to see the city decorated for the festivities as it gears up for the holidays and New Year celebrations. Sure, it'll be cold and the weather occasionally unwieldy, but it's a magical time to visit the U.K. capital.

Related: These are the best Christmas markets in Europe

For U.K. travelers looking for an affordable winter getaway, cast your eyes toward Italy, where the weather, though much milder than in the earlier months of the year, is still quite the contrast to the climate at home if you pick the right destination.

For example, Sicily will feel much closer to the U.K. spring weather. Other areas, such as Milan or Venice, won't be quite as warm but still make for great locations for romantic winter getaways on the continent.

Bottom line

While airfare prices fluctuate, they don't always follow the expected patterns you might guess. Based on Skyscanner's data from last year, you might be surprised by how much cheaper certain destinations in some months compared to others — especially airfares to Europe from the United States during summer when one might expect higher costs.

Similarly, from the U.K., Italy is generally fairly cheap to fly to if you look in the right places. By looking further afield to places like Rodez, France, or Zadar in Croatia, you might even visit somewhere that's commonly overlooked by other tourists wishing to visit better-known cities such as Paris or Dubrovnik.

Now, you might be thinking, "Bryan, can I really have a grand adventure without my bank account taking a nosedive?" And to that, I say, "Absolutely!" With over a decade of trotting the globe and keeping my finger on the pulse of the latest travel trends, I've mastered the art of stretching a dollar from here to Timbuktu and back. And, of course, staying connected without the dreaded roaming charges is part of the savvy traveler's toolkit – that's where our friends at Simify come in, but more on that later.

So, whether you're a solo wanderer, a family of adventurers, or a couple seeking a romantic getaway without the price tag of Paris in peak season, I've got you covered. Let's embark on this journey together, exploring the nooks and crannies of our beautiful planet that won't require you to break open the piggy bank. Fasten your seatbelts, and let's take off to discover the cheap places to travel in March that will leave you with memories, not debts.

In the wise words of J.R.R. Tolkien, "Not all those who wander are lost," but in the spirit of Bryan Holiday, I add, "and not all who travel smart are broke." So, let's find our thrifty path through the world's wonders together!

March, dear globetrotters, is the unsung hero of the travel calendar, a time when the savvy sojourner can reap the rewards of shoulder-season splendor. While the masses are either recovering from holiday spending sprees or saving up for summer extravaganzas, March winks at the wise with a treasure trove of travel deals.

First off, let's talk about the off-season perks. March straddles the line between the end of winter and the dawn of spring, making it a time when many hotspots are blissfully free of the tourist hordes. You know what that means? Shorter lines at your favorite attractions, more intimate encounters with local culture, and, most importantly, significantly slashed prices on everything from flights to fancy feasts.

Imagine strolling through the streets of Rome, where the only thing following you is the aroma of fresh pasta, not a conga line of camera-toting tourists. Or picture yourself in the serene beaches of Bali, where the only battle you'll fight is with the urge to nap under the soothing sun, rather than with a brigade of beachgoers for a spot on the sand.

And let's not forget the weather. March is that sweet spot when the Southern Hemisphere is basking in the last rays of summer while the Northern Hemisphere starts to thaw in the most pleasant way. It's the time when you can ski the morning slopes in Colorado and soak in a hot spring by the afternoon, or enjoy the cool, comfortable climes of Morocco before the heat turns it into a sizzling tagine pot.

So, where does one go to chase these budget-friendly thrills? The world, my frugal friends, is your oyster, and March is the time to indulge without the premium price tag. From the cherry blossoms of Japan that start to shyly bloom, offering a prelude to the spectacle of April, to the historic streets of Prague that seem all the more enchanting without the summer buzz, there's a plethora of options for every taste and budget.

In the upcoming sections, we'll jet-set to continents far and wide, uncovering the top destinations where your dollars stretch further, and your experiences deepen without digging too deep into your pockets. So, keep your boarding pass handy, and let's continue this jaunt around the budget-friendly world in March.

Remember, as the savvy travel sage Rick Steves once said, "Travel is rich with learning opportunities, and the ultimate souvenir is a broader perspective." So let's broaden our horizons without narrowing our wallets, shall we?

Now, let's embark on a virtual tour of the globe as I unveil my curated list of the top 10 wallet-friendly destinations for your March escapades. These are places where the cost of a cappuccino won't make you gasp, and the room rates are as welcoming as the locals.

The Land of the Ascending Dragon

Forget about breaking the bank for a bowl of Pho when you can slurp this culinary delight for just a few dollars in the bustling streets of Hanoi. Vietnam is a paradise for the penny-pinching traveler. From the misty mountains of Sapa to the limestone karsts of Halong Bay, your Instagram feed will look million-dollar, but your expenses will tell a different story.

The Land of Smiles

Thailand remains a stronghold for budget travelers. In March, the weather is just right for beach lounging in Phuket or temple hopping in Chiang Mai. And let's not forget the street food scene – it's like a budget gourmet's dream come true.

Central America's Hidden Treasure

March in Guatemala is a time of vibrant colors, majestic ruins, and markets that are a feast for the senses and easy on the wallet. Whether you're exploring the ancient city of Tikal or boating on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala is a place where your dollars stretch as far as the eye can see.

A Journey to the Past

Machu Picchu might be the headliner, but Peru's got depth in its bench. From the white city of Arequipa to the mysterious Nazca Lines, Peru in March is a chapter out of an Indiana Jones diary, minus the blockbuster budget.

Europe's Underrated Gem

Bulgaria in March is as affordable as it is beautiful. The ski season is winding down, meaning discounted rates on the slopes of Bansko. Plus, the capital city of Sofia offers a blend of history and culture that can rival any European city, with a price tag that's much more approachable.

Where History Meets Legend

Transylvania might be famous for its fanged folklore, but the real bite here isn't from vampires; it's the shockingly low cost of living. Castles, culture, and Carpathian landscapes await the traveler who dares to veer off the well-trodden path.

New Orleans, USA The Big Easy on a Budget

March in New Orleans is a sweet spot right after Mardi Gras madness. The city's infectious spirit is still in the air, but the crowds and prices have simmered down. Jazz, jambalaya, and jubilant vibes are up for grabs at prices that won't make your wallet bluesy.

Quebec City, Canada A Slice of Europe

Why cross the Atlantic when Quebec City offers a slice of European charm right in North America? The cobblestone streets and French flair are a backdrop for a March getaway that's as romantic as it is economical.

Before we pack our bags and jet off, let's talk shop – travel shop, that is. March travel is as much an art as it is a science, and I'm here to be your Da Vinci of deals, your Einstein of itineraries. Here are some travel tips that will have you navigating the March travel scene like a pro.

When it comes to booking flights and accommodation, timing can be as crucial as a Swiss watch. For March travel, you're in the sweet spot – the holiday rush is a distant memory, and the summer surge is just a speck on the horizon. This is the time to monitor flight prices like a hawk and pounce on those early bird specials or last-minute deals.

If your dates are as flexible as a Cirque du Soleil performer, you'll find yourself vaulting over the high prices to land on some spectacular deals. Being open to mid-week flights or staying in that charming B&B a couple of blocks away from the 'hot spot' can save you a bundle.

March weather can be as unpredictable as a plot twist in a Quentin Tarantino flick. One day you're basking in the warmth of a premature spring sun, the next you're wondering if winter is making a comeback tour. The solution? Layer, my friends. Bring clothes that can handle a surprise chill or an unexpected warm streak.

Remember, the less you pack, the less you pay – especially with airlines charging for checked bags faster than you can say "carry-on." Plus, there's a certain je ne sais quoi about traveling light that makes you feel like a travel ninja, swift, efficient, and ready for anything.

Set a daily budget, and stick to it like your taste buds to a good gelato. It's easy to get carried away in the moment, but remember, a moment of splurge can lead to a lifetime of "Should I really have bought that giant souvenir sombrero?"

Accomodation

Considering using Airbnb a property management company to help you find budget accomodation while you are travelling.

While carrying a wad of cash might make you feel like a Monopoly mogul, it's not always practical. Know where it's best to pay in cash and where cards are king. And speaking of cards, make sure you're using one that doesn't charge you a king's ransom in foreign transaction fees.

In the age of Instagram, TikTok, and whatever new app the kids are using these days, staying connected is non-negotiable. But just because we're living in a digital world doesn't mean we need to pay digital fortunes to stay in the loop. Here's how to keep your social feeds sizzling and your wallet cool.

Imagine this: You've just landed in your dream destination, and you're about to share the first epic sunset. But then, your phone decides to play Sleeping Beauty because of those dreaded roaming charges. Enter the hero of our story: the travel SIM card. With a travel SIM from Simify, you're not just buying data; you're buying peace of mind.

Simify offers a buffet of data options that cater to your travel style. Whether you're a light user who just needs to send the occasional "I'm alive" message back home, or a full-blown social media star documenting every step, there's a plan for you. And the best part? It's often a fraction of the cost of traditional roaming charges.

Let's not forget the old faithful: Wi-Fi. Cafés, libraries, and even parks offer this digital nectar, often for free. Use it. Love it. But also, be smart about it. Public Wi-Fi is about as secure as a diary with a "Keep Out" sticker. So, when it's time to do anything that involves sensitive information, switch back to your trusty travel SIM's data.

There are apps out there that compress data, track your usage, and even find free Wi-Fi spots for you. Download them. They're like having a financial advisor for your phone's data. And speaking of apps, make sure you've downloaded all the necessary travel apps before you leave – maps, translation apps, and travel guides can all be used offline if you plan ahead.

March isn't just a transitional month for weather; it's also a cultural chameleon, offering a kaleidoscope of festivals and events that can be the highlight of any budget trip. Let's globetrot through some of the most vibrant cultural happenings that won't require you to splash the cash.

In India, March brings Holi, the festival of colors, where the air is as rich with hues as the streets are with joy. It's a time when social barriers dissolve as quickly as the colored powders in water, and everyone is fair game for a splash of fun. The cost? Just a few rupees for packets of color and a heart open to the warmth of Indian hospitality.

The Emerald Isle turns a shade greener on St. Patrick's Day, and if you're lucky enough to be in Dublin, you'll find the city's festive spirit is as infectious as a leprechaun's laugh. The street parades, the music sessions, and the river dyed green – it's all free to enjoy, and the memories are priceless.

While the cherry blossoms in April are famous worldwide, the early blooms in March can be just as stunning, with far fewer crowds. Wander through the parks of Tokyo or the temples of Kyoto and partake in hanami – the traditional cherry blossom viewing – without the premium peak season prices.

Valencia's Las Fallas is a spectacle of fire and artistry, where towering statues are paraded and then set ablaze. It's a unique blend of satire, art, and pyrotechnics that culminates in an explosive finale. Best of all, the fiery fun is free to witness, though you might be tempted to spend on delicious churros and horchata.

At the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, the spring equinox brings a mystical experience as the shadow of the serpent god Kukulcán appears to slither down the pyramid. It's a moment where time stands still, and history whispers in the wind. The entrance fee to the site is modest, and the awe is overwhelming.

Safety and Health While Traveling Cheaply

As we've danced through the streets during Holi and stood in awe under the cherry blossoms, it's crucial to remember that the best travel experiences are those where we come back not just with souvenirs, but also with our health and safety intact. Here's how to keep your travels light on expenses but heavy on wellbeing.

It might seem like an extra cost, but travel insurance is really your financial guardian angel. It's like having a safety net below your high-wire act. Should you take a tumble, it's there to catch you – covering everything from lost luggage to unexpected medical expenses. And let's be honest, the peace of mind it brings is priceless.

Before you set off to conquer new lands, do a little recon. Check travel advisories, understand local laws, and be aware of any health alerts. Knowledge is power, and in this case, it's also the best protection.

Make sure you're up to date on any vaccinations required for your destinations. Also, pack a travel health kit with essential medications, because nobody wants to play charades with a pharmacist when you're feeling under the weather.

Respecting local customs isn't just about good manners; it's also about safety. Dress appropriately, behave respectfully, and you'll find that the world opens up to you in return.

Even in the cheapest of places, it's important to stay alert. Keep an eye on your belongings, don't flash expensive gadgets or jewelry, and always be aware of your surroundings. Remember, the best traveler is a smart traveler.

As we wrap up our global tour of March's budget-friendly destinations, let's reflect on the journey we've embarked upon. From the aromatic street stalls of Thailand to the historic cobblestones of Quebec City, we've navigated the world's treasures, proving that adventure doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag.

We've uncovered hidden gems where the cost of living is as delightful as the local delicacies. We've shared secrets on booking flights, packing smart, and budgeting that would make even the most frugal financier blush with pride. And let's not forget the cultural cornucopia we've feasted on, diving into festivals that dazzle the senses without draining the savings.

Throughout it all, staying connected with Simify's travel SIM cards has been our ace in the hole. Because whether you're uploading a selfie with Vietnam's Halong Bay in the background or Facetiming from a café in Peru, staying connected shouldn't mean selling a kidney on the black market.

As your travel maestro, I've been thrilled to guide you through the art of March travel. Remember, the world is vast, and your wallet needn't be vast to explore it. Travel is about the richness of experiences, not the richness of your bank account.

So go forth, intrepid travelers. Embrace the ides of March with a spirit of adventure and thriftiness. Let the world be your oyster without the pearl price tag. And when you're out there, making memories that will last a lifetime, remember that the best things in life – and travel – are not only free but often come with a discount.

As we bid adieu to our journey, it's only fitting to address some common queries that might be tickling your brain. Here are some frequently asked questions that every budget traveler may ponder before taking off.

A1: Ideally, you should start looking at flights about 2-3 months in advance. This window often yields the best balance between reasonable prices and availability. However, if you're a gambler at heart and can stomach the suspense, last-minute deals can sometimes save you a bundle.

A2: March can be a fickle friend weather-wise, so your suitcase should be a mini wardrobe for all seasons. Think layers, a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a versatile scarf. And don't forget adapters and chargers for all your gadgets.

A3: Street food is your culinary comrade for eating on the cheap without compromising on taste. Markets are also a goldmine for fresh, affordable fare. Plus, they're the perfect places to rub elbows with locals and get the scoop on the best eats in town.

A4: Solo travelers can save by staying in hostels, using public transportation, and seeking out free attractions. Also, don't underestimate the power of a friendly smile; it can often lead to shared meals, split cab fares, and invaluable local advice.

A5: Always prioritize safety over savings. Choose well-reviewed accommodations, keep your valuables secure, and trust your instincts. It's also wise to keep digital copies of important documents accessible in the cloud.

A6: Absolutely! Many cities offer free walking tours (just tip your guide!), and there's no cost for soaking up the ambiance of a bustling plaza, people-watching from a park bench, or visiting temples and churches during non-service times.

A7: A travel SIM card is a great start. Also, leverage apps like WhatsApp, Skype, or Zoom for free Wi-Fi calls and messages. Remember to download offline maps and translation tools to navigate and communicate without constant data use.

A8: If it's an emergency, seek immediate medical attention. For minor issues, local pharmacies can be very helpful. Always have travel insurance as a backup for serious health concerns. It's also a good idea to learn basic health-related phrases in the local language.

Visiting during Barcelona's shoulder season has its perks, including smaller crowds and lower rates on airfare and accommodations. Plus, average temperatures hover near the low 60s in March, so you won't overheat while exploring must-see sights such as Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) and Park Güell, a whimsical park designed by Antoni Gaudí. What's more, you can explore other popular Gaudí landmarks like Casa Batlló and Basílica de la Sagrada Família without hordes of tourists blocking your view. When you've worked up an appetite, venture to the quiet Gràcia neighborhood to sample authentic Catalan cuisine on a food tour.

Straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls is one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. While the natural beauty of the falls will take your breath away year-round, travelers who plan a trip in March enjoy the added bonus of fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and cheaper accommodations. Remember to set aside time in your schedule for Iguazu's most dramatic feature, Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), a semicircular chasm fed by 14 of Iguazu's waterfalls.

Although March falls within Maui's peak season, its excellent weather (think: average daytime temps in the high 70s and low 80s) and prime conditions for water sports and wildlife viewing make it a superb time to visit. Experienced surfers can head to popular surf spots like Ho'okipa Beach and Pe'ahi (dubbed "Jaws") to hang ten, while beginners stick to the waves at Kaanapali Beach. Meanwhile, animal lovers can look for migrating humpback whales during a whale watching cruise. To save some coin, book your Maui hotel and airfare at least a few months in advance.

These five towns on the Italian Riviera are beautiful any time of year, but there are a few benefits to visiting in March. The cooler weather (think: average temperatures sit in the high 50s) makes it a perfect time to hike Cinque Terre's famous trails, although rain may cause some of the trails to close at times. Additionally, many local shops reopen after closing for winter. Since spring is one of Cinque Terre's shoulder seasons, you'll find fewer tourists this time of year, allowing you to comfortably explore the area on foot or by boat.

March marks the end of Cape Town, South Africa's busy summer season, when temperatures begin to drop and crowds thin out. Tourists who plan a March vacation will be rewarded with cheaper rates and pleasant temps in the mid-70s, perfect for exploring top sights like Table Mountain and Camps Bay Beach. Plus, fall kicks off Cape Town's wine harvest, which makes it a great time to explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region . Many festivals and events are also held throughout the month, including the Cape Town Carnival.

Situated between two of Utah 's five main national parks, Moab is an outdoor adventure hub known for its awe-inspiring red rock formations. Travelers can admire them during visits to Arches National Park (where the world's densest concentration of natural sandstone arches resides) and Canyonlands National Park (which is the largest national park in the state). Travelers who time their trip for the beginning of the month will have the best chance of avoiding crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather in the 50s and 60s. Other must-do March activities include hiking, rock climbing, off-roading and camping.

Whether you're enjoying a show at the Vancouver International Dance Festival or admiring cherry blossoms in Queen Elizabeth Park, there are plenty of reasons to visit Vancouver in March. Spend your time on a walking or biking tour of popular neighborhoods like Granville Island and Yaletown, then ride the Skyride gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for breathtaking views of the city. March temperatures in this Canadian vacation destination are mild in the low 50s, and although you'll likely experience some rainfall, this is a great time to score big on hotel deals.

The reasons for traveling to this German city in March are multifold. Although you'll have to deal with some chilly weather (average temperatures sit in the high 40s), visiting during this shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices. March also brings the city's annual Starkbierfest event, a traditional Bavarian beer festival, and St. Patrick's Day, one of the largest cultural events in Munich. When you're not engaging in the festivities, spend the rest of your time sightseeing at famous attractions like St. Peter's Church and the Munich Residenz, the largest city palace in Germany.

While you can spot wildlife in the Galápagos year-round, March is nesting season for animals like green sea turtles, iguanas and red-footed boobies. Keep an eye out near the water, too, as sea lions are known to hang on the beaches. And though March falls within the wet season (you'll want to bring an umbrella), there should still be ample warm, sunny days to enjoy the beach, particularly toward the end of the month.

Boasting 150-plus miles of hiking trails, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas appeals to travelers with an affinity for the outdoors. Observe wildlife (including more than 450 species of birds), kayak along the Rio Grande or explore Big Bend while horseback riding. Keep in mind that spring is the park's busiest season, so you won't be the only one admiring the spectacular mountain views. Plan accordingly by allotting extra time for waiting in lines and booking your trip accommodations far in advance.

One of Cozumel, Mexico's biggest draws is its abundance of aquatic activities. The country's largest Caribbean island is one of the best places to scuba dive thanks to its clear water and proximity to the world's second-largest barrier reef. To get in the water, head to Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park to dive, snorkel or swim with dolphins. If you'd rather stay dry, sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour or lounge on one of the island's white sand beaches. Because March is outside the Atlantic hurricane season, you'll enjoy plenty of warm, dry weather.

March falls within this Laotian city's dry season, meaning you can participate in top outdoor activities like climbing Mount Phousi and taking a boat tour to the Pak Ou Caves without the threat of rain. Plus, the warm weather in the 80s and 90s makes cooling off in the turquoise waters of Kuang Si Falls even more enjoyable. Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Tuesday. For international flights, Thursday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

You can score a great deal on a cheap vacation to somewhere awesome in March. As long as you time it right (March is the tail end of the high season in the tropics), there are plenty of savings to be had on holidays, ranging from sunshine-laden beach destinations to cosmopolitan city locales.

With all that money you save, you'll be able to splurge on a better hotel, finer restaurants, and private tours. Mayan ruins in Tulum

The seaside town of Tulum, Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula is a perfect vacation spot for March travel, especially for those looking for a luxury vacation on the cheap. December and January are the most popular tourist months for this hidden Mexican paradise. In March, hotel and airfare rates drop, so the luxury resorts that might be out of reach other times of the year are more affordable. The smaller hotels that are slightly cheaper other times of the year will also have discounted rates.

Tulum has a nice mix of things to do, and it is a fun alternative to other more populated Mexican beach destinations. Relaxing on the Playa Paraiso beach and listening to the Caribbean Sea is a top activity in Tulum. You can also plan excursions with fewer people to the Mayan ruins in the area; go snorkeling in the underground caverns, called cenotes; and visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve .

Lake Eola in downtown Orlando

March is not only one of the cheapest times to visit Jaipur, India's "Pink City," but it's also one of the most colorful times of year during the famous festival of colors, Holi . If you're in the city a day before Holi, you can also see the annual Elephant Festival . It features a parade of decorated and dressed-up elephants, horses, and camels, plus quirky games like an elephant tug-of-war. Head to the Jaipur Polo Ground to get up close to the action.

Beyond festivals, another reason why Mach is a great time to visit Jaipur is the weather. Expect lots of sunshine and warm temperatures that are still far more comfortable than what you'll experience during Rajasthan's notoriously steamy summers. In the historic downtown, visitors will find antique stores, boutiques, restaurants, and a walking tour for those who want to discover more about Greensboro’s past. Six championship golf courses and the Kingdom at Lake Oconee provide golfers with opportunities for play, practice, equipment, and lessons. My husband and I spent a few days — and played a few rounds of golf — at Lake Oconee. He’s been asking me when we’re going back, so I just might see you there if you schedule a trip in March.

Where to Stay: The recently renovated Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Lake Oconee offers lakeside dining, boating, a spa, guest rooms, suites, cottages, and the Lake House, with four bedrooms and a stunning lakefront location. RVs and campers are welcome at Lake Oconee KOA .

Perfect weather in the mid-70s, gorgeous scenery, white-sand beaches, and a lively atmosphere make March a great time for a trip to Oahu. The island is celebrating the 28th Annual Honolulu Festival (March 8-10) with a parade, stage performances, food, music, and a craft fair. March is prime whale watching time, and a cruise to see the humpbacks is a thrilling experience. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, swimming, surfing, or just relaxing on the beach are more ways to enjoy the island. My first snorkeling experience was at Hanauma Bay, and I’ve returned several times since then; the marine life there is incredible. Visitors can learn about the history of the islands at the Polynesian Cultural Center or the fascinating Bishop Museum . At Wai Kai , there’s a lagoon, wave pool, kayaking, and more for family fun.

Where to Stay: The surf-themed Twin Fin and beachfront Alohilani are options near Waikiki Beach. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is a great option for families with activities for all ages.

T+L’s 2024 Destination of the Year sees its dry season in March, making this the ideal time to visit for some travelers (although the best time to visit Costa Rica largely depends on what you want to experience). “There’s really no bad time to visit Costa Rica,” says Trevor Ling, owner of Hotel Three Sixty. “Late February through March is characterized by the driest weather and spectacular wildlife sightings, like the annual humpback whale migration. This is when Osa Peninsula’s biodiversity really comes to life. Here on the Pacific Coast, March is also prime time for watching turtles hatch on our coastline’s pristine beaches.” Whether your goal is to see wildlife, beaches, rainforests, or small towns, you can find what you’re after in Costa Rica.

Where to Stay: Adults-only Hotel Three Sixty is located on the southwest coast along the Pacific. Enjoy panoramic views from the mountainside Origins Lodge or a beachfront villa at Costa Elena . Those looking for a seamless stay may want to choose one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica .

The three-island archipelago just south of Italy features well-preserved medieval fortresses, archaeological sites, and museums. From March through May, the Malta Biennale will be celebrated with cultural events and festivities. “Malta is the hidden gem of the Mediterranean, and art and design lovers who visit our country in 2024 will see more events, exhibitions, and festivals than ever before,” according to Phyllis Muscat, CEO and board chair of MICAS (Malta International Contemporary Art Space). “This fall our new contemporary art museum will open within the old fortification walls above the marina, only a few minutes walk from the center of Valletta. MICAS will offer visitors an ambitious collection of international contemporary art.”

Where to Stay: AC Hotel St. Julian’s and Barceló Fortina Malta opened in 2023, and a Hard Rock Hotel and Hyatt Centric are expected to open in early 2024.

Spring arrives in March with flowers blooming and temperatures warming into the high 60s, perfect for being outdoors. Hiking in Keramashoto National Park , strolling along beaches, and enjoying colorful blossoms are among things to do. In Higashi Village, more than 50,000 azaleas bloom for the March Azalea Festival. The Netflix series, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones , has inspired travel to Okinawa, and visitors find incredible experiences like diving among coral reefs, learning about the islands’ history and traditions, and enjoying the delicious cuisine. Flights from major cities in Asia arrive at Okinawa’s Naha Airport.

Where to Stay: Hoshinoya Okinawa is an oceanside resort offering the Okinawa Blue Zone Stay, a three-day wellness experience. Halekulani Okinawa offers guest rooms and five villas with private pools. Homm Okinawa , a Banyan Tree Hotel, features spacious private villas.

March is ideal for a trip to Mexico City, with dry weather, temperatures in the mid-70s, and the blooming of the purple jacarandas. It’s the perfect time to explore the city’s neighborhoods, from hip to historic, sample street food, and learn about the past. More than a museum, Casa Azul is the place where Frida Kahlo spent her early life and her time with Diego Rivera. Personal objects, folk art, photos, books, and paintings by both artists create a fascinating experience. I loved the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco during my visit a few years ago; seeing local families, tourists, and the colorful boats ( trajineras ) and flowers was such fun.

Where to Stay: Hotel San Fernando is a boutique hotel in the Condesa neighborhood. Andaz Mexico City Condesa features the Cabuya Rooftop restaurant and bar. Colima 71 is in Colonia Roma Norte.

March begins the shoulder season in Florence, after the winter months but ahead of spring and summer’s more popular tourist seasons. Visiting museums, restaurants, and piazzas is ideal in March, and with the right clothing, the cool weather can be comfortable. Florentine New Year , dating to the Middle Ages, is celebrated on March 25 with a procession through the city streets. Easter falls on March 31, and a unique tradition, the Explosion of the Cart , takes place. Claudio Meli, general manager of The Place tells T+L, “March is the perfect time to visit our beloved Florence and embrace some of our local traditions. One of my favorites is the Scoppio del Carro , or Exploding of the Cart. Outside of the Duomo, the cardinal of Florence lights a massive cart and fireworks are released, symbolizing the Holy Spirit.”

Where to Stay: The Place , a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Piazza Santa Maria Novella, will reopen in mid-March after a redesign. Hotel Savoy, a Rocco Forte Hotel , is located on Piazza della Repubblica.

“The Harvest Festival in Mendoza is a captivating celebration that beautifully intertwines the rich viticultural heritage of the region with a vibrant display of culture and tradition. It’s a time when the vineyards come alive with the culmination of a year’s hard work, and the air is filled with the aroma of freshly harvested grapes,” Veronica Marquina, general manager at Cavas Wine Lodge, told T+L . “It’s a must-experience event that immerses visitors in the heart and soul of Mendoza’s wine culture.” The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (Feb.28-March 3) celebrates the harvest with music, dance, theater, and, of course, wine. This agricultural region where malbec is famously made is about 650 miles west of Buenos Aires.

Where to Stay: Cavas Wine Lodge , a Relais & Châteaux member, is a boutique property set in a 55-acre vineyard. The Vines Resort & Spa is set in the Uco Valley, and SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites features wines from Susana Balbo Winery .

Visitors cross the open border easily, and in St. Maarten (the Dutch side), they’ll find casinos, bars, shopping, and nightlife, while in St. Martin (the French side), excellent restaurants, beaches, and beautiful natural surroundings are abundant. The largest regatta in the Caribbean, the Heineken Regatta (Feb. 29-March 3), will bring yacht fans from around the world. SXM Music Festival (March 11-18) arrives for five nights of electronic music and dancing. Water sports, sailing, hiking, and zip lining are among the many things to do on St. Martin.

Flights to Miami for less than $100? Cheap airline tickets to nab this Spring and Summer

cheap international travel in march

Sometimes you just need to get away.

This spring and summer, there are a plethora of destinations with affordable roundtrip airfare, from bustling cities to sun-soaked beach paradises – both domestic and abroad. Think Puerto Rico, Ireland or Las Vegas.

Travelers should start looking at prices at least three to four months in advance for domestic trips, and the best prices generally will be one to two months before the departure date, according to travel app Hopper.

International trips require more planning, with flights to Asia and Oceania booked between five and seven months in advance. However, people going to Europe or elsewhere can wait until three and six months for the lowest rates.

As always, flexibility allows for better deals. Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday could save travelers up to 30% compared to a weekend trip, Hopper said.

If you enjoy being surrounded by stunning, snowy landscapes, enveloped in mist, Moscow is the place to be. Its continental climate with long winters makes for a Russian capital city covered in snow for a large part of the year. Take one of our cheap flights to Moscow and discover an impressive city with a wealth of monuments and history, made even more dramatic by the weather conditions.

The Kremlin , a walled construction on the Moskva River , surrounded by civil and religious buildings, was home to Tsars for centuries and is today the headquarters of the Russian Parliament . Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the space within its walls is home to palaces and cathedrals, mostly built by Italian architects and engineers in the 15th and 16th century. The Assumption Cathedral , where Tsars used to be crowned, the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel , the Palace of Facets (the old banqueting hall of the Tsars), the Ivan the Great Bell Tower and the Grand Kremlin Palace (home to the Russian President), are just a few of the city’s architectural gems. Next to the Kremlin, you will find the emblematic Red Square, which is home to Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow’s most outstanding building, famous for its brightly coloured domes and home to the Moscow State Historical Museum . This museum exhibits millions of objects, ranging from prehistoric tribal relics, found on the land of today’s Russia, to priceless works of art acquired during the Romanov Dynasty .

Another of the city’s impressive monuments is the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church, housing the Trinity Icon, a work by famous Medieval iconography artist, Andréi Rubliov. In addition to Medieval and Renaissance architecture, Moscow houses prime examples of Soviet architecture, such as the group of Stalinist skyscrapers, nicknamed the ‘ Seven Sisters ’, and the exquisitely decorated Moscow Metro system, which Lenin called ‘the People’s Palace’.

If you have had your fill of grandeur and feel like taking a stroll through a bohemian neighbourhood filled with cafes, artisanal shops and street artists, head to the Arbat district, just one kilometre from the Kremlin. Moscow boasts a whole host of impressive museums, including the Tretyakov National Art Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts , which houses works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Boticelli, Rubens and Monet. Without a doubt, the city’s cultural trademark is the Bolshoi theatre , where you can catch some of the world’s most prestigious Russian opera and ballet shows. Come to Moscow and immerse yourself in Russia’s theatrical history, fit for the stage!

Welcome to the weather channel.

Haven't actually been in March myself, but I'd say there is a fair chance you would encouter some slush. Personally if I was you and wanted to treat the wife to a trip to Russia, I go there in Feb for Valentines day...always still plenty of snow around.

How to Find Cheap Summer Flights in 2024, According to Travel Experts

I t’s a catch-22 that so many travelers bemoan: Summer is the most convenient time to travel thanks to good weather and plenty of federal holidays to extend that vacation . But summer holidays—like Memorial Day Weekend, Juneteenth, Fourth of July, and Labor Day Weekend—are among the most expensive days of the year to fly, leading many would-be-tourists to just stay home.

But if you purchase your airfare during the right booking window, it's still possible to score a deal on flights departing in June, July, and August. We’re talking roundtrip flights from New York to Copenhagen for just $459, Chicago to Madrid for $540, and Boston to Cancun for just $296, according to Hopper .

But to lock in cheap summer flights, the general consensus is not to delay any further. “Especially if you’re looking to catch a flight during one of the many holiday weekends this summer, you should start planning now before you miss out on the best deals,” says Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s global travel trends and destinations expert. A good rule of thumb is booking a month out at the very least, and buying tickets even farther ahead could lead to bigger savings.

When planning your summer vacay , there’s also more to consider than just the holiday crowds. According to Skyscanner’s data, the most popular week for international travel this summer is the week of June 10, while domestic flights are projected to reach peak popularity the following week, June 17, which is the same week as Juneteenth.

It's a lot to consider, we know. So, to help cut through the noise, we asked experts at Skyscanner, Going, and Hopper for their best budget travel tips on how to score cheap summer flights for every holiday weekend this year.

Memorial Day Weekend

The booking window to find a deal on flights for Memorial Day Weekend, which falls on Monday May 27 this year, is quickly closing. “You’ll find the best prices for Memorial Day Weekend now,” Hopper travel expert Lindsay Schwimer tells Condé Nast Traveler . “Book no later than April 15th as prices will only increase as we get closer to Memorial Day.” In the last three weeks leading up to the long weekend, prices are predicted to increase more than $40 per week, Hopper’s data shows.

This year, Juneteenth, which is celebrated annually on June 19, falls on a Wednesday. The fact that it’s a midweek day off in 2024, and that it’s a newer federal holiday , could mean a better chance of locking in cheaper airline tickets. “Juneteenth is a holiday that sits at the very beginning of the peak summer travel season when some schools are still in session—and not all employers observe this day—so you might be able to find deals a touch closer in,” says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going .

The middle of June, however, usually ends up being a popular time with travelers, “so expect higher airfares overall,” Schwimer says. According to Hopper, the best time to book is now: mid-March. But booking no later than May 1 should help keep prices from getting too exorbitant.

Fourth of July

Falling on a Thursday in 2024, July 4th will be a tempting time for US travelers to take a long weekend and fly to a destination a bit farther from home.

To stay one step ahead of the high demand—and higher prices—buy your Independence Day airfares three months in advance, according to Hopper’s data. March and April are the best times to lock in tickets. “Book no later than June 1st to get a good price and ensure there is still availability on your route,” Schwimer says, adding that prices are likely to spike by about $50 per week in the last three weeks leading up to July 4th. Not only that, but flights around this time often sell out, so booking now will help you avoid big disappointment down the line.

Labor Day Weekend

Usually viewed as the traditional end of summer travel season , Labor Day Weekend has some unexpected advantages to finding flight deals. “Because some schools are back in session and a lot of folks take their summer trips before this period, you again might be able to find some cheaper fares versus traveling in the middle of summer,” Nastro says. “We just found some availability from the end of August into September from Las Vegas to Dublin roundtrip for only $518, a fare almost half off normal price.”

According to Hopper, the best time to find deals for Labor Day , which falls on Monday, September 2 in 2024, is one to three months in advance of the holiday weekend. But if you miss that window, you might still have options. “There will be some deals available if you book more last minute, meaning within three to six weeks of departure, but you’ll need to be flexible on destination or dates to find these deals,” Schwimer says.

More tips for finding affordable summer airfare

In fact, keeping an open mind on destinations and the exact dates of your trip is good advice for finding cheaper flights in general. “Travelers that can be flexible in terms of the destination, airports, airlines, and dates will have more options,” says Lindsay from SkyScanner, which offers an “ Everywhere” search feature to show cheap flights to destinations around the world departing from your home airport. Google Flights also offers a similar search filter, called “explore,” which allows users to input their departure airport and then move the map to see the most affordable destinations across the globe.

If you’re already set on a destination, consider using a price monitoring tool, which Hopper and Google Flights both offer. Travelers can input their vacation dates and airports and let the websites track airfares for them—they will send a notification when a good deal on your route is available. That means you can slip into vacation mode that much sooner.

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivers a statement on Monday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall on Friday was carried out by “radical Islamists.”

“We know that the crime was committed by radical Islamists, whose ideology the Islamic world itself has been fighting for centuries,” Putin said.

He also again suggested that Ukraine was to blame for the attack.

“It is also necessary to answer the question why the terrorists tried to go to Ukraine after committing a crime, who was waiting for them there? It is clear that those who support the Kyiv regime do not want to be accomplices of terror and sponsors of terrorism, but there are really a lot of questions,” he said in a meeting via videoconference with government officials, special services and law enforcement agencies on measures taken after the terrorist attack, according to the Kremlin.

“We know by whose hands this atrocity was committed against Russia and its people, and we are interested in who the instigator is,” Putin said.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the massacre and released graphic footage showing the incident – but the Kremlin has alleged, without evidence, that the perpetrators planned to flee to Ukraine. Kyiv has vehemently denied involvement and called the Kremlin’s claims “absurd.”

Putin on Saturday also claimed that a “window” had been prepared for the attackers to escape to Ukraine. He did not provide evidence.

The post has been updated with more details from Putin's remarks.

Death toll in Moscow concert hall attack rises to 139, Russian official says

From CNN’s Dasha Tarasova in London

People place flowers at a makeshift memorial in front of the Crocus City concert hall on Monday.

Two more people have been confirmed dead following a brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall on Friday, taking the death toll to at least 139 killed, a senior Russian official said on Monday.

“Initial results of the investigation indicate that the attack was carefully planned and prepared,” Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, said in a live TV broadcast.

Here's the numbers he provided:

  • Deaths: 139 people killed. 137 died on the spot, two died in hospitals.
  • Identified: 75 of 139 people have been identified, including three children.
  • Cause of death: 40 people died from gunshot wounds, two people died from a combination of gunshot and stab wounds. As a result of the fire, 45 people died from exposure to high temperature and combustion products.

US says that it warned Russia in early March of possible terror attack despite ambassador's denial

From CNN’s Michael Conte

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller speaks to the media on Monday.

The US State Department said Monday that the United States had warned Russia in early March about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow “potentially targeting large gatherings, including concerts."

Spokesperson Matthew Miller was responding to a denial by the Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov that Moscow received any warning.

“We gave them that private warning consistent with our duty to warn ... when we see or when we gather intelligence of terrorist attacks or potential terrorist attacks,” Miller said at a press briefing.

He noted the United States on March 7 warned US citizens to avoid large gatherings in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had described the security warning as “provocative” and “outright blackmail” before the attack.

“It was because of that warning that we passed on to the Russian government that we issued a security warning on March 7, where we again said to US citizens that we had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow… potentially targeting large gatherings including concerts,” Miller added.

Here's what you need to know about the Moscow concert hall attack that killed 137 people

From CNN staff

Flowers are left near the Crocus City concert hall on Monday.

All four suspects in the Crocus City concert hall attack case have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22. They are charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable by up to life imprisonment.

Three of the defendants pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and had been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas.

On Monday afternoon, authorities said they had identified an additional three people who they believed were involved in the attack — two brothers and a father.

Friday's attack killed at least 137 people. The attack is Russia's deadliest in two decades .

Catch up on the latest developments:

  • Day of mourning: Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a day of national mourning for the 137 victims in Friday's attack .
  • Authorities work to identify victims: Procedures to identify those killed in the attack have begun, the city’s Department of Health said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. The Russian Investigative Committee said 62 bodies had been identified so far, adding that "for the remaining victims, genetic examinations are being carried out to establish their identities."
  • Fighting terrorism in Syria and Turkey: Putin held separate calls with his Turkish and Syrian counterparts, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad, on Saturday and promised closer cooperation in fighting terrorism following the attack, according to a Kremlin readout.
  • Russian Embassy says no warnings from US: The Russian Embassy in Washington says it did not receive any warnings about a potential attack in Moscow from the US. Last week, Putin dismissed warnings by the US embassy in Russia that there could be attacks on large groups.
  • Putin links attack to Ukraine: Putin said the main suspects arrested planned to flee into Ukraine. Ukraine has denied any connection. The UK warned that Russia was creating a "smokescreen of propaganda."
  • Terror alert: France has lifted its terror alert to its highest level following the deadly attack in Moscow, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said Sunday.

Russian social media channels show apparent torture of Crocus City suspects

From CNN’s Nathan Hodge

Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, a suspect in the deadly terrorist attack in Moscow, sits behind a glass wall of an enclosure during a court appearance on Sunday. His ear was heavily bandaged.

Video footage and still images have appeared on Russian social media that appear to show the violent interrogation of several of the men alleged to have taken part in the deadly terror attack on a concert hall outside Moscow Friday.

One video appears to show one of the suspects, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, being held on the ground while having part of his ear cut off by a camouflage-wearing interrogator. Rachabalizoda later appeared in court with a heavily bandaged ear.

The Grey Zone, a pro-Kremlin Telegram channel, published a still photograph that claims to show the electrocution of one of the detained suspects.

Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Russian state propaganda network RT, posted a video that appears to show the interrogation of another suspect, Shamsidin Fariduni, who is shown stammering and shaking as he is questioned by interrogators off camera. Fariduni subsequently appeared in court with a bruised face.

CNN asked the Kremlin about the “visible signs of violence” committed against the suspects, but spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment.

Russian Investigative Committee asks court to detain three more in connection with concert hall attack

From CNN's Tim Lister and Darya Tarasova

The Russian Investigative Committee says it has established that more people were involved in Friday's Crocus City terror attack beyond the four men alleged to have carried out the attack.

“According to the investigation, in order to commit a terrorist act, Shamsidin Fariduni recruited Aminchon Islomov into the organized group no later than January 2024, and Dilovar Islomov no later than March 11, 2024,” the Investigative Committee said on Telegram.

The three individuals are two brothers and their father, Russian state media agency TASS said. Investigators are asking the Basmanny Court of Moscow to choose a preventive measure for the three defendants, the court told TASS.

“Three more materials were received regarding the accused Islomov Aminchon Isroilovich, Islomov Dilovar Isroilovich, as well as the suspect Islomov IsroilIbragimovich,” the court said, according to TASS. Fariduni was one of those detained in Bryansk Saturday. Both Aminchon and Dilovar Islomov appeared in Basmanny court in Moscow Monday. State news agency TASS said that Dilovar Islomov is a citizen of the Russian Federation and works as a taxi driver, citing court documents.

Russian state news agency RIA said Dilovar Islomov “owned the Renault car in which the terrorists fled the crime scene, sold it in February, and the compulsory motor liability insurance remained on him,” citing a source familiar with the situation.

Here's what to know about ISIS-K, the group linked to the Moscow concert hall terror attack

From CNN's Jessie Yeung

A view shows the burned out Crocus City hall venue, the scene of Friday's attack outside Moscow, on Saturday, March 23.

ISIS, also known as the Islamic State group, claimed responsibility for  Friday’s deadly assault  on a concert venue in Moscow, releasing graphic footage purporting to show its gunmen carrying out what was Russia’s worst terror attack in decades.

Here's what we know about the group:

When was it formed?: ISIS-K was formed in 2015 and has been active in  Afghanistan , Pakistan and Iran. It is a branch of ISIS, the terror group that emerged in Syria and Iraq and, at its peak, controlled a huge stretch of territory. Five years since the  fall of ISIS’ self-proclaimed caliphate  across Iraq and Syria, the group has morphed into a terror network with cells spread around the world, including in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

How is it linked to ISIS? The connection between the groups is not entirely clear. The affiliates share an ideology and tactics, but the depth of their relationship – such as the chain of command and control – has never been fully established.

What is its ideology?: Like its parent organization, ISIS-K aims to create a “pure Islamic state,” according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) – describing the group’s vision of a “global, transnational caliphate” governed by Sharia law.

Why attack Russia?: ISIS has a longstanding animosity against Russia and Putin, several experts told CNN. “Russia has been at the top or near the top of the list of ISIS for many years,” said Daniel Byman, director of Georgetown University’s security studies program.

Russians return to site of Moscow terror attack to offer condolences

From CNN's Matthew Chance and Katharina Krebs in Moscow

A mans lays flowers at a makeshift memorial outside Crocus City hall on Monday.

Four days after Friday's Moscow terror attack, some 200 people gathered at the site of the attack Monday morning, offering condolences to the victims, a CNN team in Moscow reports.

While the crowd was much smaller than the numbers who were at the Crocus City hall on Sunday, a steady flow of people were bringing flowers and stuffed toys to the scene, according to the CNN team. Candles were also laid next to the memorial.

A Russian Red Cross tent is set up at the location to provide psychological help. The CNN team said volunteers are helping people with directions on where to pick up belongings or cars left on Friday. The main entrance of the Crocus hall remains barricaded off, with police buses and emergency vehicles clearing rubble. Search operations are still ongoing.

The victims: Moscow's Department of Health published an updated list of those still hospitalized in the capital's medical institutions after the attack, consisting of 76 names.

At least 137 people died in the attack after gunmen opened fire on people inside the hall, and set fire to the building. Of them, at least three were children. President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a day of national mourning, vowing to punish the perpetrators and expressing condolences to those who had lost loved ones.

Tajikistan reiterates readiness to cooperate with Russia against terrorism after Moscow concert attack

From CNN's Anna Chernova

Following the identification of the four men charged with carrying out the attack in Moscow on Friday as Tajik nationals, Tajikistan has reiterated its readiness to fight terrorism together with Russia.

The Russian state news agency TASS published video Monday showing Tajik Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda writing a note in the book of condolences at the Russian embassy in Dushanbe.

State-run RIA Novosti reported on its Telegram channel that Tajikistan is providing assistance to the Russian investigation “in the case of the terrorist attack in Crocus,” citing a source in Tajikistan’s special services. It reported that a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry had confirmed that “Tajikistan specialists are providing assistance to investigators from Russia in connection with the arrest of citizens of the republic in the case of a terrorist attack.”

On Sunday, the Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken with his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon, who had expressed “deep condolences and feelings of solidarity with the Russian people in connection with the death of civilians as a result of the vile terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall."

“During the conversation, Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon noted that special services and relevant departments of Russia and Tajikistan are working closely in the field of countering terrorism, and this work will be intensified,” the Kremlin said.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.
