Liverpool's cruise berth officially opened on September 21st 2007. The berth is just a 5-10 minute walk from the World Heritage City center, whilst England's beautiful Northwest region is practically on the door step. A new permanent cruise terminal has been replaced the old facility in 2023. This terminal is only a block or two away from the existing terminal.

The berth is at Princes Dock. A 3 minute walk south to Pier Head, where in summer there is a fair with many rides, a rather lively area. Another 8 minute walk south, you will find the beautiful restored Albert Dock with The Beatles Story Museum and the Mersey side Maritime Museum and many restaurants and cafes in a very pleasant area. Right next to the Albert dock you will find Wheel of Liverpool , a huge ferris wheel with great views.

If the weather is nice, the above area is certainly good for a few hours of fun and relaxation.

Sport is a passion too with two Premiership soccer clubs and home to the world's most famous steeplechase, The Grand National. The Northwest region is known as England's Golf Coast.

For serious shoppers the new Met Quarter and Liverpool 1 boast designer boutiques and over 200 new shops, restaurants and bars.

The currency throughout the UK is the pound (£). You may also hear the slang term quid for pounds. Scottish bank notes are frowned upon in other parts of the UK, so change the notes before leaving Scotland.

Cash machines (ATM) or less formally 'holes in the wall' are very widely available and usually dispense £10 and £20 notes.

Liverpool Cruise Port

Liverpool cruise terminal (aka Cruise Liverpool) is nestled along a UNESCO-listed waterfront on Princes Parade and consists of a 350-metre-long berth that can accommodate large cruise vessels. Upon sailing into the city, make sure to come out on the upper decks to enjoy breathtaking views of Liverpool’s skyline, the historic Pier Head, and the iconic Liver Building.

Liverpool is a turnaround port equipped to handle the embarkation and disembarkation processes efficiently, providing facilities for check-in, baggage handling, and other services (including long-stay parking) necessary for the smooth turnaround of cruise ships.

Liverpool Cruise Port

Departing from the maritime city of Liverpool is the route to a friendly and efficient start to your holiday. Embarkation and disembarkation takes place in the same shared space and so for this reason, your cruise ticket includes a link to Check-in , which details your allocated arrival window, to help steady the flow of guests checking in for a smooth and safe embarkation. We kindly ask that you only arrive within your dedicated arrival window. If you arrive early, we ask that you return during the time specified for your arrival. Should you be delayed for any reason and miss your arrival window, the cruise check-in desks will be open for late arrivals.

Checking in

At check-in, you will be asked to present your passport. You will also need to register a credit or debit card to open your on board account. To keep things simple, all purchases you make during your cruise will be added to your account.

Wheelchairs & Scooters

If you intend to bring a wheelchair or scooter on board, it must be pre-booked in advance. Due to health and safety regulations, each vessel has a strict limit to the number of mobility devices on board. If you haven’t pre-booked and wish to check the availability of wheelchair and scooter spaces on your cruise, call Guest Services on 0800 0355 145. On arrival at the port, please bring your wheelchair or scooter to check-in. We kindly request that you do not pack mobility devices in your luggage.

Travelling to the Cruise Terminal, Liverpool by Car

If you are travelling to Liverpool by car and wish to use SatNav, please use the following post code:

Liverpool Cruise Terminal: L3 1DL

- Leave the M6 at Junction 21a, and take the M62 towards Liverpool.

- Follow the M62 to the end, keeping directly ahead for the A5080.

- Continue on this road until it merges into the A5047, following signs to Liverpool City Centre, the Cruise Terminal and Central Tourist Attractions.

From A55 – North Wales

- Head west on the A55, then continue onto A494.

- Merge onto the A550, via the ramp to Birkenhead, stay on the A550 before continuing onto the A41.

- Bear left onto Tunnel Road, then right onto King's Square (Toll Road).

- Stay on the Mersey Tunnel/Queensway route and then turn onto the A5036.

Arriving by your own car (if you have pre-booked car parking with CPS)

Please drive directly to the Q-Park Liverpool ONE car park ( L1 8LT ) where you will be met by a Cruise and Passenger Services representatives who will check your car in, and you will then be transported from the car park to Liverpool Cruise Terminal for check-in.

Arriving by other transport

If you are not arriving in your own car, please proceed directly to the Cruise Terminal drop off area where you will be directed by our team to the arrival area, which is a short walk away. Please have your travel documents, proof of a negative lateral flow test result and vaccination ready. You will then be shown to the check-in area where you will receive your cabin cards.

If you have booked and pre-paid car parking with CPS, you will be advised at the time of booking what documentation will be sent and required to present on arrival at the port. 

If you have booked a cruise that includes complimentary car parking, you're still required to book a car parking space. Fred. Olsen will issue a complimentary voucher 2 to 3 weeks before sailing and this will be posted directly, or via your travel agent. This complimentary voucher must be presented to car park staff upon arrival. Regrettably, if guests forget this voucher they will be required to pay the full ‘on the day’ rate, which cannot be reimbursed by Fred. Olsen.

Travelling to Liverpool by Train

Liverpool Lime Street is Liverpool's mainline station, with trains connecting the city to Manchester, London, Scotland and the rest of the UK. Lime Street is approximately a 20 minute walk from the Cruise Terminal or approximately 5 minutes by taxi - see local taxi company details below. National Rail Enquiries (08457 484 950) can assist with specific train times.

Please note: There is no free porter service available at Lime Street Station.

How Liverpool Cruise Terminal changed tourism in the city

With news that a global cruise operator is negotiating with Liverpool City Council to take over the running of Liverpool Cruise Terminal, we look at the positive impact the terminal has had on the city. 

Early history 

Since the city built the world’s first enclosed commercial dock in 1715, 

Liverpool’s marine infrastructure has been considered one of the world’s best. 

And our role as a major player in transporting goods and passengers has been vital to the city’s growth and development for decades. 

Liverpool’s maritime history is unique and varied, from welcoming SS Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic in 1819, to serving as a base for world-famous Cunard and White Star shipping lines. 

Indeed, when UNESCO granted the city the title “Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City” in 2004, it was due to Liverpool being “the supreme example of a commercial port at a time of Britain’s greatest global influence. 

The Modern Cruise Terminal

Liverpool Cruise Terminal was officially opened by the Duke of Kent in 2007 when the QE2 berthed at the terminal as part of her 40th anniversary tour. 

Developed alongside improvements to the Isle of Man ferry terminal, the 350-metre floating structure was funded by grants from the UK Government and European Development Fund. 

However, the £9.2 million grant from the government came with an unusual condition. 

To minimise unfair competition with ports built with private funding, like Southampton, Liverpool Cruise Terminal could only be used for port-of-calls, meaning cruises could not begin or end at the terminal. 

But in March 2012, the government agreed to a repayment offer from Liverpool City Council and lifted the restriction.  

This move allowed the likes of Fred Olsen, P&O Cruises, Marella Cruises and Ambassador Cruise Lines to offer customers the chance to sail from the city to global destinations. 

Since opening, Liverpool Cruise Terminal has welcomed more than 800 cruise ships into the city. These ships have brought over 1 million passengers and crew into Liverpool, generating £72 million for the local economy. 

Hospitality in the city centre has seen the greatest benefit, with tourists from across the world taking advantage of the famous Scouse welcome in our hotels, bars, restaurants, and attractions. 

What ships have visited Liverpool Cruise Terminal? 

Royal Navy Carrier HMS The Prince of Wales 

The Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier arrived in Liverpool in February 2020 for a week-long visit. Visitors were invited on board the new carrier for the first time as part of the celebrations. 

Virgin Cruise Ship, The Scarlet Lady 

February 2020 also saw the visit of Virgin’s The Scarlet Lady as part of her world tour. 

The stunning ship’s stop in the city was symbolic for Virgin boss Branson, as Liverpool was home to one of the first Virgin Records stores he opened. 

The Three Queens – The Queen Mary 2, The Queen Elizabeth and The Queen Victoria

In June 2015, Cunard’s Three Queens gathered together on the Mersey for the first time to celebrate the cruise line’s 175th anniversary. 

After performing a remarkable synchronised turn on the river, the visit of Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 will live long in the memory—the perfect salute to Cunard’s spiritual home. 

Disney Magic Cruise Liner

The Disney Magic Cruise Liner first sailed down the Mersey in 2016 and now visits the city yearly. 

Every visit is extraordinary, and the ship is everything you’d imagine from Disney, with a nine-hole mini golf course, basketball course, pools, hot tubs and The AquaDuck – a 233-metre water slide that winds over the edge of the ship and through its forward funnel. 

What’s next for Liverpool Cruise Terminal?  

According  to reports , Global Ports Holding is discussing taking over the terminal, possibly as early as next year. 

The move could see GPH pick up the delayed project to build a new 108,000 ft terminal facility. 

Set to be built at the Princes Jetty on Princes Dock, the plans include a two-floor terminal with a baggage hall, passenger lounge, passport control and check-in desks.

Viking Venus cruise ship returns to Liverpool

The 'all veranda small ship' reportedly offers guests sweeping ocean views from their rooms

The Viking Venus cruise liner made a return visit to Liverpool today as part of a 14-day voyage.

The ship docked at Liverpool Cruise Terminal on the sixth day of its itinerary after docking in Dublin yesterday. The cruise started on April 19 in London-Tilbury, and will end in Bergen, Norway on May 3.

On route to Bergen, the Viking Venus will stop in Holyhead, Belfast, Ullapool, Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, Leith-Edinburgh, Invergordon and Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.

The Venus was built in 2021 and can accommodate 940 passengers and 465 crew members. It has 10 decks and 464 cabins and can travel at a speed of 23 mph.

It is described as an "all-veranda small ship", which means it can dock where larger ships cannot. It is said to offer its guests sweeping ocean views from their rooms.

The ship was officially named by the broadcaster Anne Diamond on May 17, 2021. It has eight identical sister ships which together make up the Viking ocean fleet, after the name of the operator Viking.

The Venus features the Viking Living Room, with a bar inspired by ancient Viking longships. The ship's spa contains the 'Snow Grotto' which is described by Viking as "the most unique treatment space at sea". The company said "it acts as a part of the centuries old Nordic tradition of alternating hot and cold treatments to detoxify." There is also a music venue styled in the image of a 1940s Hollywood jazz lounge.

Today's stop was the second time the Venus has docked in Liverpool this month. The ship also docked on April 13. It is scheduled to return to the city on August 27 and September 8.
