The best places to spot a croc

Tropical North Queensland’s saltwater crocodiles – huge beasts that can grow up to 7m in length, with formidable jaws and armour-like hides – are one of the world’s most enduring species, having outlasted dinosaurs by some 65 million years.

Fearsome, yes, but also fascinating: the saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile and the largest terrestrial predator on earth. The easiest way to get up close with a crocodile is at one of the TNQ’s wildlife parks. At Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures , halfway between Cairns and Port Douglas, you can marvel at the strength and size of both fresh and saltwater crocodiles on an intimate cruise of the lagoon in the wetland environment. At Rainforestation in Kuranda, Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas and Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome in the city, you can enjoy guided tours through the parks, watch croc feedings and meet plenty of cold-blooded locals!

If you have your heart set on catching a glimpse of a crocodile in the wild, there are a number of wildlife cruises to choose from in the Daintree, Cairns and Mission Beach. On the tours, you’ll get an up-close encounter with crocodiles, endemic birds, and other wildlife so it’s perfect for the ultimate nature lover. Bear in mind that croc-spotting is easier in the colder months; during the wet season, many crocs cool down by submerging themselves in the river.

Tropical North Queensland is at the heart of crocodile country, so if you’re travelling through, be croc-wise. Look for warning signs, but remember that crocodiles may even be present in un-signposted areas, and never camp near the water’s edge.

Cairns & Great Barrier Reef Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Statement

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Jetski Croc Spotting Tour was Amazing

My girlfriend and I did this tour and had an absolutely amazing time. We were fortunate enough to see 6 crocs both on the banks and in the water. Steve was informative and helpful and the photos that he took turned out great. I felt the customer service was great especially because I booked this trip very last minute Steve helped out late on Friday night. This tour would have been fun even if we didn't see any crocs, the scenery and the wildlife was something that was very unique to Cairns. Seeing a 4.5m Croc at close range which is longer then the jetski that you're on is something I will never forget. I look forward to doing this trip again when I come back to Cairns.

cairns crocodile jet ski tour

Staff were good - helpful, easy-going, well-organised and informative. Jetskiing was a blast - wind and spray hammering you, even small waves will launch you into the air. It's pretty easy though and seems very safe (less of a rush than dirtbiking). The basic jetskiing is just going back and forth between buoys, so if you don't want to just go fast and practice turns and jumps, maybe try a tour.

DO NOT GO ON THIS TOUR if you are expecting to see crocodiles. First off I want to say I actually booked the tour through Everything Travel NZ, who are wonderful. My complaint is w/ NQ Watersports and Steve, the tour operators. 2nd, this tour states you will see crocs, it is in fact a croc spotting tour. I didn't book the tour w/ the intent of just riding around on a jet ski....although fun, I can do it back in the states for free. Very disappointed when we arrived back and saw not one single croc. I asked the guy if the tour was free since we didn't see any?? He said they can't guarantee that, and didn't seem too concerned. He also said there were alot of fishermen out, and they scare the crocs away. Um, that's fine, but then why am I going on a tour to see crocs that aren't going to even be there??? NO disclaimer was listed that you may not see crocs. Since my trip and because of my email to them, Everything Travel put this disclaimer on their website so people are aware, which was awesome. NQ, AS OF TODAY HASN'T. And although Steve at NQ has been made aware of all of this, he has done nothing. Except to say he was sorry I felt I was misled, and that he still feels his tour is a good one. I obviously disagree and feel this was very bad advertising, and in fact misleading. So I just want to be sure people are aware of this before booking tours with NQ Watersports. Lisa

We booked the Adventure pack which included tandem parasailing, bumper tube ride and jet skiing. It was the most fun couple of hrs of our lives!! Particularly the bumper tube, which we didnt have much interest in doing but took it up bec the adventure pack was such great value - ironically it ended up being the highlight of an excellent adventure! We even got to ride the jetski all the way back to the dock - an extra little bonus :-) If you like to have some fun and a bit of an adrenaline rush don't pass up this opportunity. Thanks for an awesome time Steve and extend our thanks to your assistant (sorry we can't remember his name). M & R.

We recently stayed in Palm Cove and wanted to do the whole 'jetski' thing. After doing a bit of research online, we discovered NQ Watersports and we are so glad we did. The guys are completely professional, friendly and provide you with a truly fun-filled adrenaline pumped adventure. We did the jet-ski, paraglide and tube ride package. It was fantastic. We received up to 300 photos on cd to take home with us, and got to take most of them up in the air when we were paragliding. What I like most about NQ Watersports is that they are a family operated business, unlike the other massive conglomerates out there, they have a more personalised service where you are treated like an individual rather than just another 'tourist'. I think it's much more rewarding to stick with the 'little' guys and small businesses than the over-the-top touristy groups that shove you on and disregard the personal touches that places like this offer. Sure, it's just a bit of a jetski and some water adventure, but when it comes to fun, safety and value for money, this is the perfect place to get it all. Highly recommended. The paraglide is absolutely awesome—brilliant views and you can take your own pics from the sky. The tube is insane—a rough and choppy adventure, just make sure you hold on. Don't be fooled by the small size of the office, the thrills will satisfy any thrill-seeker.

My family and I had a blast on the jetskis. I have to admit I surprised myself by being a nervous driver (to my shame), but still had fun. The other three completely loved it. In fact our younger son (he's 13) and his Dad decided to go back two days later for another go! The jet skis are well balanced, fairly large and very responsive, and easy to drive. Pre and post-booking emails were all friendly and helpful, and my apologies for not remembering his name, but the guy taking us out on the jetskis was really nice bloke too. I can't think of anything more of help to say in the review, but the entire experience was very positive. Thank you NQ Watersports, and all the best for the future.

Our Jetski Crocodile Spotting Tour in Cairns begins in Trinity Inlet, where you’ll hop aboard your Yamaha jet ski and set off on an amazing hour-long adventure. You can choose to ride solo or tandem, with the freedom to go as slowly or quickly as you’re comfortable. As the first stop on your voyage, your experienced guides will lead you to Admiralty Island. There, you can observe the local saltwater crocodiles and domestic birds, including Ospreys, egrets and sea eagles.

As the tour continues, you’ll head to three more creeks, where you’ll have the chance to see more crocodiles in the wild. In total, the trip covers 45 kilometres and provides an exciting alternative to more traditional croc spotting tours.

This tour operates twice daily throughout the year, with both morning and afternoon departures (exact times depend on the tides). No experience is required, and the professional crew will provide you with all equipment and give a pre-departure safety briefing. Participants must be at least 16 years old to drive their own jet ski, and children who are at least eight years old are welcome to ride with a parent.

Add to the Adventure with Parasailing and a Bumper Tube Ride If a Cairns jetski tour by itself isn’t enough adventure for one day, you can add extra activities to kick it up a notch. Our Parasailing and Jetski Tour in Cairns is ideal for thrill-seekers who love spending their day out on the water and enjoying new experiences.

This tour includes three of the most fun activities Cairns has to offer: parasailing , jet skiing and bumper tube riding. While you can select just one or two activities, we recommend you upgrade to the combo so you can participate in all three.

The 10-minute parasailing trip will take you over the pristine waters of Trinity Inlet, as you take in the magnificent views of the rainforest and ocean from 300 feet up in the sky. You can choose to enjoy your parasail either alone or with a loved one as a tandem trip.

If you opt to jet ski, you’ll get to spend 30 minutes cruising around the beautiful waters of Far North Queensland either solo or tandem. You won’t stop smiling as you splash around, taking in the picturesque views and enjoying the warmth of the sun.

The final component of this exhilarating tour is a 10-minute bumper tube ride. Here, you’ll jump into a white water rafting tube and hang on as you twist and turn through the sea either alone or with others. You can determine how fast or slow you go, so you’ll be sure to have a blast during this part of the day.

You have many options when it comes to the Parasailing at Jetski Tour, as it departs four times daily all year. While children over five are welcome to participate, anyone who wants to drive a jet ski must be at least 16 years old.

Both of these tours are fantastic and unique ways to experience the unrivalled beauty of the Cairns coast. This is especially true if you want to check out the scenery at your own pace since a jetski hire lets you go as fast or slow as you would like.
