Cruise Ship Worker Took Own Life After Not Being Allowed to Leave: Report

A crew member took his own life on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in mid-November, according to a report.

The crew member, an unnamed Brazilian man, died shortly after the Wonder of the Seas set sail for the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, Florida, on November 13, Crew Center reported.

According to the website, a source said the man, who worked as a galley steward, "apparently died of suicide and left a note before his death along with a video on social media."

Wonder of the Seas cruise ship

The crew member's death came after he had reportedly requested to sign off to return home due to personal issues at home. That request was denied, according to Crew Center.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of a crew member on board Wonder of the Seas ," Royal Caribbean said in a statement to Newsweek.

"Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with their family and friends. We are providing assistance and support to the crew on board at this time. Out of respect, we will not provide any further details."

The death has raised questions about why cruise lines don't have mental health counselors aboard their ships.

Crew Center said the crew member's death "is another sad reminder that mental health professionals are needed on board in order to provide direct support 24/7 for crew members and talk with each one about their concerns, challenges and fears. The mental health and well-being of the crew needs to be the main focus among the shipboard management as well."

Royal Caribbean does not employ any despite at least 25 employees going overboard from the company's ships in the past 13 years, according to data collected by Cruise Law News, run by maritime lawyer Jim Walker.

The website says that most of the crew members "disappeared mysteriously and appeared to have ended their lives intentionally."

A Royal Caribbean employee, reportedly an Indian man, went overboard from the Odyssey of the Seas in April last year as the Royal Caribbean cruise ship sailed south of Cyprus.

Before that, a 27-year-old crew member from Poland disappeared from the Jewel of the Seas as the ship was sailing near the coast of Greece in May 2020.

The ship's closed-circuit camera captured the man jumping from the ship into the sea.

There were a total of 623 deaths on cruise ship lines between 2000 and 2019—89 percent of them passenger deaths, according to a November 2020 study published by the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health.

Suicide and murder made up about 29 percent of the crew deaths, the study found.

British-born director Tony Scott on the set of his film 'Man On Fire' in Mexico City, 2003

Tony Scott's death filmed by witnesses – and hawked to media outlets

Witnesses who filmed and photographed Tony Scott's fatal leap from a bridge into Los Angeles harbour are reportedly hawking the footage to media outlets.

The material captures the British director crouching moments before he jumped an estimated 185ft to his death on Sunday. The show business website TMZ said it had seen – but not purchased – some of the footage.

Some witnesses said they assumed at first it was an extreme sports stunt, not a suicide. A surveillance camera from a nearby business also recorded the jump.

News of the macabre footage came as it emerged Scott made meticulous preparations for his death and had planned to use the bridge from which he jumped in a blockbuster film.

The 68-year-old left a list of contact names, numbers and instructions in his car for police to find after he jumped, one of several notes he left in various locations.

The most detailed note, which reportedly explained why he took his own life, was left in his office. Its contents were not immediately revealed, leaving his motives a mystery to the public as harrowing details emerged of his final moments.

ABC reported on Monday that the 68-year-old had inoperable brain cancer but hours later the theory was rebuffed by Craig Harvey, the coroner's department chief investigator. "A family spokesman told us late this afternoon that the information was not true, but we will be looking at everything," he told reporters. ABC quickly retreated from the story.

An autopsy had been completed but final results must wait six to eight weeks for toxicology tests, added Harvey.

The lack of obvious motive baffled commentators who said the British director of Top Gun, Crimson Tide and Beverly Hills Cop II appeared to have it all: success, wealth, respect, a wife and two young children.

His brother and production partner, Sir Ridley Scott, flew from London to Los Angeles as tributes continued flowing for the late director. Tom Cruise, who was planning to make a Top Gun sequel with Scott, said in a statement: "Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him … My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time."

Oliver Stone tweeted: "My favorite Tony Scott film is "Enemy of the State" (1998). Brilliant and way ahead of its time. Will miss him."

It emerged that Scott was very familiar with the Vincent Thomas bridge near Long Beach, about 30 miles south of his Beverly Hills home, because he planned to use it in a remake of the 1970 cult classic The Warriors, about a gang crossing New York to their Coney Island home pursued by rival gangs.

In a 2009 interview with the website Rotten Tomatoes Scott said he wanted to switch the story to Los Angeles because it was horizontal whereas New York was vertical.

He envisaged the climax of the film on the suspension bridge which spans the harbour. "I'm hoping to get 100,000 real gang members standing on the Vincent Thomas bridge for one shot. I've been meeting the various gangs as part of the research. I've met them all, Crips, Bloods, The 18th Street Gang, The Vietnamese and so on. They all love The Warriors, so it was, 'Yeah, fuck yeah, we'll be in that!"

Witnesses described the director's final minutes on a sun-drenched early afternoon. After parking his black Toyota Prius he made his way to a fence on the bridge's southern side.

"He was looking around and fumbling with something at his feet," David Silva, a car passenger on the northern side, told the Los Angeles Times . "He looked nervous. I thought it was some extreme-sports guy."

cruise director kills himself

A teenager has died after falling from multiples floors on a cruise ship returning to Miami.

The Miami-Dade Police Department tells PEOPLE that a 15-year-old boy, aboard the MSC Cruise ship, "jumped from a balcony" and landed on one of the decks below. The local medical examiner has ruled the death a suicide.

A spokesperson for the cruise line issued a statement to PEOPLE, saying: "All of us at MSC Cruises are heartbroken. The family remains in our thoughts and prayers. Out of respect for the family's privacy, we will not be discussing any additional details."

The incident took place Wednesday at around 7:30 p.m. local time, according to Fox News and Crew Center , following a five-night trip in the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

In a statement given to Crew Center, a passenger onboard the ship shared that the vessel's captain made a "man overboard on the port side" announcement over the ship's PA system the night of the incident.

"We just had 3 emergency blasts following captain's announcement 'Man Overboard,'" the unnamed passenger told the outlet at the time. "People started running to the sides to investigate what happen, although it's nighttime."

The passenger also explained that crew members told all guests to return to their rooms and to stay away from public areas around the ship.

"A crew member came to our cabin and instructed us to close the balcony door and draw the blinds. Police will board tomorrow when we return to Miami to investigate this tragic event," they added.

Tony Scott Dead: 'Top Gun' Director Dies After Jumping From Bridge (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES — Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder" and "Beverly Hills Cop II," died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge, authorities said.

The 68-year-old Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said.

"I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," Scott's spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement.

Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.

A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott's body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner's office.

One lane of the eastbound side of the bridge was closed to traffic during the investigation. Cargo vessels moved at reduced speeds through the east side of the port's main channel during the search, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Investigators found a note in Scott's black Toyota Prius, which was parked on the bridge, according to the Los Angeles Times. That note listed contact information. A suicide note was later found at his office.

The British-born Scott, who lived in Beverly Hills, was producer and director Ridley Scott's younger brother. Distinct visual styles mark both siblings' films – Ridley Scott mastering the creation of entire worlds with such films as "Gladiator," "Blade Runner," "Alien" and this year's "Prometheus," Tony Scott known for hyper-kinetic action and editing on such films as his most recent, the runaway train thriller "Unstoppable," starring regular collaborator Denzel Washington.

Scott was a thrill-seeker himself in his personal life, an avid rock climber who also liked driving fast cars and motorcycles. Still, filmmaking was his real thrill.

"The biggest edge I live on is directing. That's the most scary, dangerous thing you can do in your life," Scott said in an interview for his 1995 naval adventure "Crimson Tide." "The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies. It's the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through."

Tony was the first of the Scott brothers to enjoy blockbuster success with "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise, the top-grossing film of 1986 at $176 million. Scott teamed with Cruise again four years later on the hit "Days of Thunder." He also had a sequel to "Top Gun" in development.

But Ridley Scott later managed more and bigger hits than his brother and earned a level of critical respect never achieved by Tony Scott. "Gladiator" won the best-picture Academy Award for 2000 and earned Ridley Scott one of his three best-director nominations; Tony Scott never was in the running for an Oscar, and critics often slammed his movies for emphasizing style over substance.

Even Scott admitted that it was a challenge to infuse drama into some of his scenarios – for example, cars racing in circles in "Days of Thunder." In an interview for that 1990 summer hit, Scott was blunt about where some of the ideas came from.

"I went back and I stole from all race movies to date," Scott said. "I took the better elements, then tried to build on them. Really, the speed, the energy and the placement of the audience inside some of the cars came in the editing room. ...

"I'm always pushing for something new and fresh in the way things are shot, and the rest happens in the editing room. ... The real speed comes from the cutters and what they do with the celluloid."

While Ridley Scott had an auspicious start to his film career with 1977's acclaimed period drama "The Duellists" and 1979's "Alien," Tony Scott bombed with his debut, 1983's supernatural romance "The Hunger," with David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve.

He vaulted into Hollywood's top ranks the next time out, with "Top Gun," followed a year later by "Beverly Hills Cop II," both with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were working jointly on a film called "Killing Lincoln," based on the best seller by Bill O'Reilly. Along with countless commercials, their company produced the CBS dramas "NUMB3RS" and "The Good Wife" as well as a 2011 documentary about the Battle of Gettysburg for the History Channel.

Tony Scott said he gained perspective by mixing things up between film, TV and commercials.

"I like changing the pace of my life, changing my discipline. It gives me ideas for how to see the world differently," Scott said in a 2007 interview.

Besides "Unstoppable," Scott worked with Washington on four other movies: "Crimson Tide," "Man on Fire," Deja Vu" and "The Taking of Pelham 123."

In a tweet Sunday, director Ron Howard said, "No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day."

Director Jon Favreau tweeted, "Such sad news about Tony Scott. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."

Other Scott films include "True Romance," written by Quentin Tarantino, "The Fan," with Robert De Niro, and "Enemy of the State," starring Will Smith.

Scott was married to actress Donna Scott, who appeared in several of her husband's films. They have twin sons.

Completed in 1963, the 6,060-foot Vincent Thomas Bridge links rises 185 feet at its highest point above the Los Angeles Harbor. Many have taken their lives by jumping from the span.

The bridge has been used in many Hollywood productions, among them "Charlie's Angels," "Gone in 60 Seconds" and "The Fast and the Furious."

Reporting from The Huffington Post:

A source close to the family had revealed that Scott had inoperable brain cancer, but TMZ later reported that another source had told the news site that earlier reports were false . More on the story is available here

A 15-year-old boy died allegedly by suicide last week on a cruise ship that was returning to Miami from the Caribbean, according to police reports.

The teenager was aboard the 20-level MSC Seashore last Wednesday when the incident happened, officials from the cruise liner said.

The Miami-Dade police believe there is no reason to suspect foul play, according to The Maritime Executive .

“Our team immediately notified authorities and our care team is assisting the young man’s family on board,” the cruise liner said in a statement. The cruise was returning from a five-day voyage to the Caribbean.

Passengers onboard the cruise ship were informed of the incident around 7.30pm on Wednesday.

An unidentified passenger said the “captain made the ‘Man Overboard on the port side’ announcement on the ship’s PA system” and advised all guests to return to their cabins and to steer clear of public areas, according to Crew Center .

“People started running to the sides to investigate what [had] happened,” he said. “A crew member came to our cabin and instructed us to close the balcony door and draw the blinds.”

After some time, passengers were told that there was “no reason to be concerned” and that the cruise liner was on its way to Miami, where law enforcement authorities would investigate the incident.

Life is so precious…puts everything in perspective that’s for sure. He was so young and full of life. Had the pleasure of meeting him on a HAL ship and was hoping to see him again on MSC.

Definitely not 79. I’d say late 40’s if that.  I hope it’s not him.

Wrong Gene Young. The man who passed away was 85.

OMG, what terrible news.  Gene was our favorite Cruise Director on any cruise line and the best on MSC by far.  He was so talented and so personable and had a way of making everyone feel welcome onboard.  What a tragedy to lose such a wonderful man who was right in the prime of his life.  Deepest condolences to his fiancee and family.  He will be missed by all.   Here is a photo of the last time we saw him on Seashore in February of 2022.

Absolutely heartbreaking

I may be mistaken but we were on last week sailing of Seascape and I believe he was at the white party which was Feb 10th.

  • A fellow passenger said he felt "sick to his stomach" after the captain announced the news.
  • The US Coast Guard said it ended its search for the man on Christmas Day.

A 41-year-old man fell overboard while aboard Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas cruise ship, which was headed to the Bahamas.

According to the US Coast Guard, the ship was 127 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, when the incident occurred.

The Coast Guard said Monday that it has since called off its search for the missing person.

In an interview with local newspaper The Post and Courier, 21-year-old passenger Jake Utzinger said he was lying in his bed when the captain announced the news on December 23.

"I instantly felt sick to my stomach knowing that one of our fellow travelers had been lost at sea," he told the newspaper.

According to the outlet, the ship stopped and the crew used a strobe light to search for the passenger for six hours. Utzinger said he and other guests headed to the pool deck to try to help with the search.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean said that the crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities who launched a search and rescue mission.

"Out of privacy for the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share," they added.

In a post on X, the Coast Guard said it suspended its efforts on Monday, after an eight-hour search that covered more than 1,625 square miles.

At least 10 other people have fallen overboard from cruise ships this year, Business Insider previously reported . Two of those passengers survived.

According to CruiseMapper , which tracks the locations of thousands of cruises around the world, the Vision of the Seas ship is currently traveling around the Bahamas.

The ship has the capacity to carry 2,500 passengers, and features a rock-climbing wall, outdoor movie screen, and swimming pools.

'Minority Report' Ending Explained: What Happens to John?

The sci-fi film's conclusion hints at finality, but the totality of the film points to ambiguity.

I had Minority Report wrong. When you look at it in the context of Steven Spielberg 's overall filmography, the film's ending seems like it follows in the footsteps of movies like Schindler's List , Saving Private Ryan , and even A.I. Artificial Intelligence (some view the ending as bleak, but Spielberg says its happier conclusion is where he and Stanley Kubrick wanted to take it). Spielberg is a director who doesn't really go for ambiguous endings and wants to give the audience a feeling of hope even in the face of humanity's darkest impulses, and so I viewed Minority Report the same way—a film that has a bleak ending ( Tom Cruise 's protagonist John Anderton goes in the ground, sentenced for a crime for which he was framed), but then it keeps going so that Spielberg can have a happier conclusion. Upon a recent viewing, however, it's clear that Spielberg crafted the most ambiguous ending of his career and one that speaks to the film's larger thematic intersection of choice and observation. With Minority Report recently streaming on HBO Max, it's an ending worth revisiting.

'Minority Report' Questions If Seeing Is Believing

Minority Report is a movie obsessed with what we can see, and that seeing is believing. The Department of Precrime is based on visions of the precogs. The precogs only give out little bits of information and it's up to detectives to piece them together into a narrative that makes sense of an upcoming murder. John Anderton, a man haunted by visions of his past where his son was kidnapped and never found, now devotes his life to visions of the future even though, as the film unfolds, these visions are far from ironclad despite the religious implications put upon the precogs (the film comes right up to the line of calling them "oracles", their dwelling is nicknamed "the temple", and even one of John's fellow detectives remarks, "We're more like clergy than cops."). People want to believe that the precogs are infallible, so they build the case around that. As is so often the case with human nature, believing is seeing rather than the other way around.

Spielberg and screenwriters Scott Frank and Jon Cohen (working from a short story by Philip K. Dick ) constantly draw attention to notions of observers and the observed. The Washington, D.C. of 2054 is pretty much a surveillance state where privacy has been eliminated for one reason or another. Sometimes it's to sell your crap as scanners read your eyeballs (note that Spielberg chose to base identification around eyes—our instrument of vision—rather than faces) and sometimes it's the government to track your every movement like when John boards a train. John is a drug addict, and his drug is supposed to provide "clarity" even though he just gets high and hides in the past of happier times with his lost son. When Agatha grabs John for the first time to show him a particular vision, she asks him, "Can you see?"

Added Surveillance Doesn't Make 'Minority Report's World More Just

And yet the world presented in Minority Report , a world that has cut down on 90% of murders, is not a "better" or "more just" world. It's a world with a filthy underbelly where the surveillance state hasn't solved poverty or improved people's lives. Rather than a pleasant dystopia, Spielberg and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski shoot almost the entire movie in greys and blinding lights, a world where nothing is clearer, just more sterile until you need a crime like getting your eyeballs replaced. But even in the scene where the cops send "spiders" around to scan everyone's eyes, it's all a matter of what we don't see. The cops are looking for John, but they miss all the human tragedy around them whether it's the scared family or the bickering couple or the dilapidated surroundings. As is often the case with Minority Report , just because something has your focus, that doesn't mean you've seen the whole picture.

That's the trap I fell into. I was so focused on Spielberg's narrative tendencies that I missed understanding the film holistically. Instead, I viewed it structurally, and the structure seemed to hinge more on the inevitably of fate even though, as I saw on this recent viewing, fate is upended multiple times. "You can choose," Agatha ( Samantha Morton ) pleads with John, and John decides not to kill Leo Crow ( Mike Binder ). The second choice arrives in the film's conclusion.

What Happens at the End of 'Minority Report'

At the climax of the film, John has been apprehended and "haloed", a device put around his head that basically causes him to go catatonic so the authorities can put him into the ground for the rest of his natural life. The story then continues with Lamar Burgress ( Max Von Sydow ) preparing to be feted for the nationwide implementation of the precrime program. However, John's ex-wife Lara ( Kathryn Morris ), breaks into the containment unit where John is being kept and liberates him. They then work together to expose the evidence that Lamar worked his way around the pre-crime system to avoid being captured for the murder of Anne Lively ( Jessica Harper ), Agatha's mother. Anne wanted her daughter back, but that would have broken the precrime department, so Lamar decided to kill her and make the murder look like an echo, an aftershock that technicians would write off rather than the actual murder. Yet again, people see something, but what they're seeing has been altered by their own beliefs.

Meanwhile, as John moves to confront Lamar, the precogs signal a new upcoming murder—Lamar will kill John at the party. When John arrives at the party where Lamar has been exposed for killing Anne, John presents Lamar with a choice: fulfill the precogs' prophecy and commit murder, or admit that the system is flawed and that the future can be changed once it has been observed. As the Observer Effect states, the act of looking at something changes it. My look at the film changed it into a pattern of Spielberg's filmography, but looking at the whole picture—the stuff I overlooked and missed, similar to the characters—changes its entire complexion.

Looking at the film now, it's not that the film's conclusion happens or if it's just a vision in John's head. Does the bad guy get away with it, or does the hero save the day? It depends on how you're willing to look at it. We've just been treated to a film that's all about the fallibility of our own visions. We have a surveillance state that misses the justice it's supposed to implement. We have a program ostensibly to protect humanity that comes from the suffering of three innocent beings who are perpetually tormented by visions of murder. We have a hero who made it his mission to avert a horrible vision and ended up fulfilling it like Oedipus Rex, who famously gouged out his own eyes. So is Minority Report a depressing Greek tragedy or an uplifting Hollywood blockbuster? You can choose.

I'm a cruise director for Holland America. Our crew lives in its own little world that passengers don't see.

  • Kimberly Wells started working on cruises as a performer in 1987 when she was 20 and fell in love.
  • After a hiatus on Broadway and the Home Shopping Network, Wells returned to cruise work in 2020.
  • She shares the pros of working on cruises: the people, the places, and the cons: no days off.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is from an interview with Kimberly Wells about working as a 57-year-old cruise director. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I sang and danced my way into my first job on a cruise ship at age 20, working as part of the entertainment team in 1987. I fell in love during that first voyage, with a man and with a way of life. After that contract ended, I knew I had to figure out a way to stay aboard. I became a fitness director, then a social hostess.

My biggest passion is the stage, and I couldn't say no when I received the call from Broadway. I worked in New York City for 10 years, before becoming a host on the Home Shopping Network.

My job with HSN ended a couple years ago, and I wasn't ready to retire.

I'd stayed in contact with friends and my former bosses in the cruise industry and made some calls. I was quickly connected with Holland America, who flew me out to audition for a cruise director role in April 2020. I got the job but, due to COVID, had to sit through a two-year waiting period before returning to the seas.

Now, as of 2022, I'm the cruise director for Holland America, working aboard several ships, including most recently on Zuiderdam .

A day in my life as a cruise director

As the cruise director, I'm the first and last face that any guest sees on any sailing. They serve as the main connection point between ship crew and guests, keeping all passengers up to speed on all available entertainment and goings-on as well as the nuts and bolts of days at port.

My day starts at 6 a.m. I hit the ship's gym, then I'm out on the floor at 8 a.m., grabbing a coffee and chatting with guests before my first meeting at 8:30 a.m. Then I host a coffee chat to meet guests, make my first announcement of the day to all the passengers, and then the day just keeps on – boom, boom, boom – from there.

My superpower is that I can go from zero to full glam makeup in 30 minutes. I do this most nights, hitting the floor right before an event, and greeting guests.

Every night, I give what's called the "today, tonight, tomorrow" talk that recaps the day and let the guests know what to expect for the night and the next day.

Related stories

Then I introduce the show, be it a comedian, magician, or dance show. Then I take down the show. I'll repeat that with every evening performance. Then it's back to my cabin by midnight.

What most people don't realize is that cruise ship workers don't ever have a day off during their contract. We only have hours off. The hardest part of this job is learning to power nap. You also get great at arranging your schedule so that you have downtime.

Every day no matter how tired I am, I work out, meditate and practice yoga because those things give me strength internally. If I want to recharge further I'll get facials and massages in the ship's spa where the treatments aren't free but are heavily discounted for staff.

I love traveling to new places

My last three contracts have taken me to Alaska, the Caribbean, and New England.

On my first cruise this season in Alaska, we were touring the Margerie Glacier and saw so many baby seals. We witnessed one seal give birth. I can't wait for my next contract: a 73-day cruise around Africa.

We start in the Caribbean, pass through the Panama Canal, and go on to spend nearly three months exploring Africa. I've been to Africa before, but this is such a unique opportunity to see so much of it.

As much as cruising is about the destinations, it's also about the people

I love this aspect of my job because I'm a people person. I live for making magical moments for others.

One time, at Half Moon Cay, Holland America's private island in the Bahamas, a guest was planning a proposal. I'd arranged for him to ride a white horse down the beach to meet his girlfriend. We'd set everything up and then got a call that he'd forgotten the ring on the ship.

I had to jump on a tender back to the ship. He gave housekeeping his room number and safe info and they were able to bring the ring to me. I ran down that beach to get it to him just in time. It was amazing to be part of that.

The crew section of the ship is its own world

There's a corridor that runs the entire length of the ship in the crew quarters. Along the hall,  we have barbershops, pop-up shops, massage therapy, girls making jewelry – you name it. We are a city on the sea, with a lot of diversity. My last ship had 55 nationalities on board.

This job keeps me busy, but it's rewarding every day. Just a few weeks ago, my friends from back home in Minnesota shared that they had five feet of snow, and I was on the beaches of the Galapagos. Bigger than the places we see, I love that I make so many friends through this job. I'm still connected to many people I met during my first week on board.

Jack Reacher Sequel Director Blames Himself For Panned Tom Cruise Movie's Failure

Tom Cruise's second time out as Jack Reacher was not the success it was expected to be, and director Edward Zwick takes full responsibility.

  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, directed by Edward Zwick, failed at the box office, with a poor $162.1 million gross, effectively ending the franchise.
  • Zwick takes responsibility for the failure, admitting his mistake in trying to mix the tones of Jack Reacher and Paper Moon, realizing audiences wanted more action.
  • The Jack Reacher series on Prime Video has found success by staying faithful to the novels and featuring Alan Ritchson as the perfect embodiment of the character. Season 3 is currently in production.

Reacher has been a runaway success for Prime Video, but the character seemed destined to be known for being a box office drip thanks to Tom Cruise’s second outing as Lee Child’s action hero in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back . Addressing the poor performance of the movie in his new book, director Edward Zwick opened up about blaming himself for the film’s critical and financial failings.

Jack Reacher 2

Christopher McQuarrie directed the original outing entitled Jack Reacher in 2012, with Zwick stepping in to take the helm for the sequel four years later. The decision proved to be a huge misstep for everyone concerned, with the movie landing a poor $162.1 million as its total gross, and effectively ended the franchise. As shared by Variety , Zwick has accepted the responsibility for the failure of the movie in his new book, Hits, Flops and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood . He wrote:

“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which Tom Cruise and I made in 2016, fizzled at the box office. I blame myself (and my willing accomplice, Don Granger) for thinking the audience might enjoy a mash-up of Jack Reacher and Paper Moon, when in fact they just wanted more red meat. I had a wonderful time working with Cobie Smulders, and I certainly don’t blame Tom for not being six two — as the novelist Lee Child described his protagonist — and should Tom happen to call about making a third movie together, I’ll definitely pick up.”

Jack Reacher Has Found Success on Prime Video

For many Reacher fans, there was one fundamental problem with Tom Cruise’s appearances as Reacher – he just didn’t match the physical description of the character that fans demanded. Cruise was able to pull off his usual displace of charisma and stunts, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back took a hefty amount of criticism for having a lack of energy and being overly predictable.

However, the end of the movie franchise left the way open for someone else to step in and take a shot at bringing the mercenary tough guy to screens again. And that has been done with aplomb by the team behind Prime Video’s Reacher series.

More faithful to Child’s novels, and delivering the perfect embodiment of Jack Reacher in lead Alan Ritchson, the series has achieved huge success across its first two seasons, even if the most recent didn’t quite manage to hit the heights of its predecessor. However, Season 3 of Reacher is currently in production , and will no doubt be looking to break the records set by Season 2.

Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back are both streaming on Paramount+. Reacher Season1 and Season 2 are available on Prime Video.

The Al Qaeda Plot to Kill Bill Clinton That History Nearly Forgot

By Jonathan Landay

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Air Force One with President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton aboard was on its final approach to Manila on Nov. 23, 1996, when their U.S. Secret Service detail received alarming intelligence: an explosive device had been planted on the motorcade route into the Philippines capital.

Acting swiftly, the agents switched to a back-up route to the Clintons' hotel, foiling a suspected al Qaeda attempt to assassinate the president of the United States minutes after his arrival for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

As the motorcade crawled along the traffic-clogged alternate route, Filipino security officers recovered a powerful bomb on a bridge the convoy would have taken and an SUV abandoned nearby containing AK-47 assault rifles, four retired agents told Reuters.

War in Israel and Gaza

The assassination attempt, which appears to be one of al Qaeda's earliest attempts to strike the U.S., was mentioned briefly in books published in 2010 and 2019.

Now, eight retired secret service agents – seven of whom were in Manila – have given Reuters the most detailed account to date of the failed plot.

Reuters found no evidence of a U.S. government investigation into the attempt on Clinton's life. The news agency also could not independently determine if intelligence agencies conducted classified probes.

For some of the Secret Service agents interviewed by Reuters, the events in Manila have left unanswered questions.

"I always wondered why I wasn't kept back to stay in Manila to monitor any investigation," said Gregory Glod, the lead Secret Service intelligence agent in Manila and one of seven agents who spoke out for the first time. "Instead, they flew me out the day after Clinton left."

"There was an incident," said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. "It remains classified." He declined to say what, if any, actions the United States took in response.

Clinton did not respond to multiple attempts to reach him through his spokesperson and the Clinton Foundation.

Former CIA director Leon Panetta, who was Clinton's chief of staff at the time, said he was unaware of the incident but that an attempt to kill a president should be investigated.

"As a former chief of staff, I'd be very interested in trying to find out whether somebody put this information to the side and didn't bring it to the attention of people who should have been aware that something like that happened."

Under a 1986 law it is a crime for a foreign extremist organization to attempt to kill any U.S. national overseas. Prosecution requires authorization from the attorney general – the late Janet Reno in 1996 – which would then trigger an FBI investigation.

The FBI declined to comment on the Manila assassination attempt.

Four former U.S. officials, including the ambassador in Manila at the time, Thomas Hubbard, confirmed the foiled attack to Reuters but said they were also unaware of any U.S. investigation or follow-up actions.

Thirteen years after Osama bin Laden's death, al Qaeda is a diminished force. But the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas "mobilized efforts to radicalize and recruit new followers within Muslim communities in Europe," a U.N. panel of experts wrote in a Jan. 29 report, citing al Qaeda propaganda supporting Hamas.

OMINOUS INTELLIGENCE

Glod said a U.S. intelligence agency later assessed that the plot was set up at bin Laden's behest by al Qaeda operatives and the Abu Sayyaf Group, Filipino Islamists widely considered an arm of al Qaeda.

He declined to identify the agency. Reuters was unable to confirm the assessment and the CIA declined to comment.

According to a 2022 International Crisis Group report, the group is in disarray, with only a handful of its leaders still alive.

The office of the Philippines' president, Department of Foreign Affairs and the National Police did not respond to requests for comment.

Four of the Secret Service agents who spoke to Reuters noted that Ramzi Yousef - the al Qaeda-linked mastermind of the first World Trade Center attack in 1993 and a nephew of September 11 architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who had trained Abu Sayyaf militants - was in Manila days before a 1994 visit by Clinton.

Yousef is serving a life sentence plus 240 years in a federal "supermax" prison in Colorado.

An FBI memorandum of its first interview with Yousef after his 1995 arrest noted that he surveyed sites in Manila that media reported Clinton would visit. Yousef "indicated that he considered placing an improvised explosive device in a location along the motorcade route," it said.

Yousef ultimately concluded there was too much security and insufficient time for an attack, the memo said.

Three of the Secret Service agents said they believed that Yousef instead was preparing for the 1996 attack, pointing out that the date of the APEC summit was known in late 1994.

"I knew he (Yousef) was sort of an advance team," said Glod, citing his familiarity with intelligence reports.

Yousef's lawyer, Bernard Kleinman, told Reuters that while "it's conceivable" that Yousef was in Manila in 1994 to begin the foiled 1996 plot against Clinton, he doubted that he did, describing his client as a bragger who made "himself much, much greater than he may have actually been."

The threat posed by al Qaeda and Yousef was just one of the unsettling elements confronting the Secret Service's advance security team, the three agents recalled.

The Philippines was battling communist and Islamist insurgencies. Police discovered a bomb at Manila airport and another at the summit conference center in Subic Bay several days before the Clintons' arrival. The U.S. State Department warned of threats against American diplomats in Manila the day before the First Couple flew in.

Glod told Reuters the Manila assignment was "the worst advance I had ever done in terms of (threat) intel."

The dangers were highlighted for Clinton before the visit in top-secret President's Daily Briefs, according to a military aide, retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson, who accompanied Clinton on the trip.

DEVICE ON A BRIDGE

It was late evening when Clinton flew into Manila.

As Air Force One descended, Secret Service agent Daniel Lewis relayed the intelligence to the Secret Service team at the airport about a "device on a bridge" on the main route to The Manila Hotel.

Buckled into his seat outside the Clintons' cabin, Lewis Merletti, who led Clinton's protective detail and later became Secret Service director, said he came to the same conclusion after a call from a U.S. intelligence officer whose name he didn't know disclose warning of a communications intercept mentioning a "wedding across a bridge."

He said he recalled an intelligence report several years earlier that identified "wedding" as "terrorist code for an assassination." The planned motorcade route showed three bridges on the main route to the Clintons' hotel.

"That's it. We're changing the route," he remembered saying over a secure radio link to Glod, who confirmed Merletti's recollection of the event.

The bomb intended for Clinton was found atop an electrical box on a bridge along the original route, said Merletti, Lewis and Glod, who retired from the Secret Service in 1998, 2003 and 2011, respectively. Glod was rehired in 2017 as a law enforcement instructor before leaving in October 2023.

Reuters video footage of Clinton's arrival shows bomb disposal experts wiring an explosive to the side of an electrical box on a bridge and detonating it. No bomb is seen atop the box.

Filipino security personnel also recovered a red Mitsubishi Pajero abandoned at the far end of the bridge, the agents said. They said the AK-47 assault rifles found inside suggested that the attackers planned to block the span with the vehicle and fire on the motorcade.

The next morning, Glod and Merletti said they were briefed on the plot by a U.S. intelligence official at the U.S. embassy and shown photos of the device.

It comprised armor-piercing rifle-propelled grenades atop a box containing TNT wired to a Nokia phone rigged as a detonator, they said. Lewis and Craig Ulmer, who was the agent in charge of the Manila ground team, said they also later saw the photos.

Dennis Pluchinsky, a retired State Department terrorism analyst who learned of the foiled plot in 2020 while researching a history of anti-U.S. terrorism, noted that in 1995 Clinton issued Presidential Decision Directive 39 committing to "deter, defeat and respond vigorously to all terrorist attacks" against Americans at home or abroad, and "apprehend and prosecute" those responsible.

It was not until after 220 people died in al Qaeda bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August 1998 that Clinton responded with cruise missile strikes.

Those failed to stop bin Laden from planning fresh attacks.
