You can also enjoy activities like kayaking or swimming in some of the hidden lagoons.

Overnight cruises offer more time to explore Halong Bay and its surrounding areas. Most overnight cruises depart from Hanoi early in the morning and return late in the afternoon on the following day. During this time, you’ll have ample opportunities to visit various islands, caves, fishing villages, and beaches. Some overnight cruises even provide onboard entertainment such as cooking classes or squid fishing at night.

For those who want an extended adventure in Halong Bay, multi-day excursions are perfect. These cruises usually last for three days or more and allow visitors to explore not only Halong Bay but also Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay – two other scenic bays nearby that are less crowded than Halong Bay itself.

Other Cruises Offering Unique Experiences

Apart from traditional cruises around Halong Bay, there are other options that offer unique experiences for visitors. For example, some cruises specialize in eco-tourism activities such as cycling through local villages or trekking through national parks.

One popular activity that many visitors enjoy is kayaking through hidden lagoons or caves that cannot be accessed by larger boats. This gives visitors an up-close view of the stunning natural scenery and a chance to explore the area at their own pace.

Another unique experience offered by some cruises is visiting local fishing villages. Visitors can learn about the traditional ways of life of the fishermen and even try their hand at catching fish using traditional methods.

Celebrity Cruise – A Luxurious Option

For those who want a luxurious and exclusive experience, Celebrity Cruise is one of the most popular options for exploring Halong Bay. The cruise offers a range of amenities such as private balconies, gourmet dining, spa services, and even a butler service on some packages.

Celebrity Cruise also offers various itineraries that allow visitors to explore not only Halong Bay but also Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay. Onboard activities include cooking classes, tai chi sessions, and movie nights under the stars.

No matter which itinerary you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to see stunning natural landscapes and learn about the rich cultural history of Halong Bay. With so many options available, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful part of Vietnam.

For traveler’s dropping in on Halong Bay on an international cruise there is limited time to make the most out of their trip. Visitors on international cruises should be clued up on everything they can do to make their overnight stay go smoothly. To help save time, we’ve gathered all the essential information that travelers need to get all the boring bits out of the way so that the fun can begin!

Cruise Ships Visiting Halong Bay: Port of Call and Visa Requirements

Most foreigners require a visa or other official permit to enter the Vietnamese mainland. This can be applied for by the individual themselves or via the cruise operator. It’s easier to allow your cruise operator to apply for your permit for you and this is usually done at no additional cost.

Foreigners also need to be registered with the local police authority to stay overnight in Halong Bay. Travelers need not worry about this if they are taking a Halong Bay cruise whilst there, as the local cruise operator will register you. Cruise operators need their passengers’ passport numbers and international cruise ship information (if applicable).

Tip: Check out our visa exemption page for a full list of visa requirements to Vietnam and Halong bay.

halong international cruise port

There are currently four possible ports where international cruise liners dock:

  • Van Hai Port
  • Cai Lan Port
  • Vinashin Port
  • Halong International Cruise Port

From these ports it may be possible for your Halong cruise operator to pick you up by shuttle bus. The distance from the international port to the local ports is around 30 minutes on average.

If the weather is good, it may be possible for the cruise operator to send a small boat to pick up guests from the international cruise port.

Travelers should contact their Halong cruise operator to arrange a transfer from the international cruise port. Be aware that transfers may be charged as an additional fee outside of your cabin price.

If a transfer isn’t available, tourists can make use of the taxis that usually stay around the entrance of the port. When taking a taxi in Vietnam always make sure the taxi driver uses the taxi meter.

To book a Halong Bay tour, tourists should book in advance online through a Halong cruise operator’s website or via a comparison website. Alternatively they can also contact the operator directly by email or phone. It’s highly recommended that visitors book in advance as tours and cruises may become fully booked if left to the last minute.

If it’s not possible to book a cruise in advance, we still recommend booking online even if you are physically in Halong Bay. This is because there is a risk of being scammed or overcharged if you try to book in person at one of the ports in Halong Bay.

Tourists can book a day cruise or 2 day 1 night cruise which should enable them to see enough of Halong Bay and get back to the international cruise ship in time.

Whether a day trip or a 2 day 1 night cruise is the best option is down to how long the individual’s international cruise is in port. If you can stretch to do a 2 day 1 night cruise we would strongly recommend doing so as this gives you enough time to truly experience a stay in Halong Bay.

If you cannot stay overnight in Halong Bay, choose your day trip carefully and make sure it gives you enough time to return to the international cruise ship.

Does Celebrity Solstice offer shuttle transportation from Cai Lan port to the entrance of the port or it is a short stroll to the entry? Thanks

@Miho, Thank you for contacting us. Celebrity Solstice does not offer shuttle service from Cai Lan port to the port. So if you book the cruise with us we will arrange a private car to pick you up from Cai Lan port to the cruise pier. May I know the date and time of Celebrity Solstice arrival? So we can send you our best cruise. Looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Harzel

I”m trying to apply for e-visa for my travels on Azamara Onward. I cannot find Halong Bay. I called the cruise line they said either Cai Lan or Bai Chay but they are not listed?

Hello, Most cruises now dock at either Hon Gai or the Halong International Cruise Port. Therefore, you can select 'Hon Gai' as your port of entry for your cruise ship.

https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn

I am arriving on the Celebrity Solstice in Jan 24 at the Celebrity website mentions Cai Lan port however I am trying to apply for a Vietnam visa and it asks for you to select an "allowed to entry through checkpoint" however Ha Long or Cai Lan are not listed as seaports. Any suggestions?

Hello Sarah, For the e-visa application for Halong Bay, only Hon Gai port is listed. Kindly check with your cruise operator to determine which port they will dock at.

Hello, We will arrive at Ha Long Bay on 3/4/2024 via Seabourn Encore. Do you know what port Seabourn will be docking at? Could you recommend a half-day tour of Ha Long Bay, pick up at the port? Thank you.

@A. VU, Sorry we have no idea of the exact port that Seabourn Encore will dock at. Please check again with your cruise organizer. There are 3 international cruise ports in Halong which are Cai Lan, Ha Long International Cruise Port (Sunworld Port), and Tuan Chau Port. However, Halong International Cruise Port and Tuan Chau are the only 2 ports offering Halong Bay cruise trips currently. Besides, the pickup service is only available for those starting from Hanoi. From Halong, you can take a taxi to get to the port. It is better if you provide the port and arrival time so that we can suggest the day cruise accordingly. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards,

We arrive at Cai Lan port on a Celebrity cruise ship and want to go to Sun World. What is the best way to get there?

@Charlene, It is around 15 minutes from Cai Lan Port to Sun World by car. In our opinion, the best way is to take a taxi. You can refer to some brands such as Mai Linh Taxi, Bai Chay Taxi, Thanh Cong Taxi, Sao Mai, Phu Binh Taxi, etc.

We arrive at Cai Lan port at around 11.30am on Feb 17th 2024 on a Celebrity cruise ship and would like to book a boat trip around Halong Bay for several hours on that day. Could you recommend any boat trip operators that we could contact please? Thankyou

@Shirley Ledger, Kindly note that it takes you around 20 - 30 minutes from Cai Lan Port to Halong Cruise Port or Tuan Chau Port. As your arrival time is 11:30, we suggest you book Alova Day Cruise departing from Tuan Chau Pier at around 12:15 - 12:30 pm. We offer a day tour at the cost of $60/person including lunch. Please get back to us if this works for you. Regards,

can you walk from the celebrity cruise in chi lan bay to the main gate and how long is it.

#Lynn, Celebrity Cruise usually docks at Cai Lan Port which is around 15 minutes from Halong International Cruise Port and 20 minutes from Tuan Chau Port by car. You need to check the port of Halong cruise and take a taxi to get there. Regards,

I will be on Celebrity Solstice cruise to Halong Bay that docks at Cai Lan Port and I am booking a local cruise on Halong Bay. My local cruise will pick me up but I need to give the pick up location - should I say Cai Lan Port or Halong International Port? And how do I go from Cai Lan to Halong Int. Port? Thanks. Sandra Jeanne - [email protected]

@Sandra, If your cruise docks at Cai Lan Port and your local cruise offers pick-up service, you can tell them your location wherever you want, either Cai Lan or Halong Port. From Cai Lan, you can take a taxi to get to Halong International Port. It takes you around 20 - 25 minutes. Regards,

  • 2120Farwell 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Overall good experience and would recommend. We booked a 6 day 5 night tour for Da Nang, Hoi An, and Cham Island with Local Tours Vietnam. Reservation was easy and communication with Huy during reservation was easy. Huy was very flexible. However, when we got to Da Nang airport, we couldn't find our driver at airport pickup. We contacted Huy but couldn't get a hold of him until about 1/2 hour later, then another driver from the company found us. Diệu our tour guide for Da Nang City Tour did a great job. Tour guides for Ba Na Hill and Cham Holy Santuary were good. Tour guide for Cham Island and provided lunch food were not good. Tour guide did not explain much in English. There were not many colorful fish at the snorkeling location. Overall, we had a great time and good experience and I would recommend this tour and Local Tours Vietnam but I would recommend that Huy be accessible and more responsive when customer encounter problems. Incredibly, he also cooked our food at the boat’s cooking demonstration—that he then sneezed all over! Truly. Wife and I both now have this a-hole’s infection. What a poorly run outfit. • D8249RWdawnl 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles DO NOT BOOK If I could give this zero stars I would. I booked this tour last minute the night before and they contacted me letting me know the day of that even though I booked it , we might not be able to go due to room and car So we upgraded our room and the ride to a “limousine” and a higher star hotel. 7 am they pick us up and the “limousine” is TINY and cramped. Me and my boyfriend sit in the front cramped riding for 6 hours. With barley any space. When I say do NOT book this tour I mean it. They stuff you in a tiny VAN with no leg room and up charge you for it. If the tour is full do not give people the option to book just so you guys can upcharge them and have them ride UNCOMFORTABLY for 6 hours. Next we get to the hotel and we’re informed that the 3 of us will be staying in the same room.. with one bed and there’s an up charge if we want 2 rooms. So we pay the upcharge when we already paid for a upcharge to a “nicer” hotel. The hotel is nice but the food is bland. The first tour was okay.. it was cold and foggy so we could barley see anything. We get back to the hotel and the people we booked through inform us that there’s not a room at the hotel we’re staying at for tomorrow night and DOWNGRADE us to a tiny hotel room and ask us to pay again for an extra room when we PAID the upgrade price already for the hotel and limousine upgrade just so they can stick us in a tiny hotel and inform us that if we want to continue to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner that came with our package we booked we would have to walk to the old hotel we were staying at prior. The tours.. just so you know cat cat village is a place locals go to sell stuff and they are aggressive. It was so crowded and we were rushed from place To place. The next day we hiked the rice hills.. our tour guide ran into her village elders and asked them to come along to help us through the rice Fields just for them to ask us to buy things at the end of the tour. We felt like they had shaked us down and force us to buy stuff from them. They all work together to scam foreigners and make us feel bad. The rice field was a WASTE of time and money due to the weather we couldn’t see anything because of the fog and ruined our shoes .. at the end of the tour we discovered there was a route that we could of taken that wouldn’t have ruined our shoes and was safe but our tour guide mai took us the more dangerous and dirty way so that she and her elders could shake us down for over priced souvenirs . We decided not to even go on a hike the last day because we felt like we were scammed by our tour guide and didn’t feel comfortable. Long story short: this tour is a scam for more money and not worth even half what we paid. I wouldn’t let my worst enemy go through the head ache I’ve been through these three days. Book at your own risk but I would NEVER RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. The people of Sapa are not friendly and you are only a buck to them. The entire time I’ve been here I’ve felt uneasy and haven’t met one decent person. It’s a money grab scam and the people running this TripAdvisor is super unprofessional for allowing me to purchase just to force me to be up charged to a “higher” star hotel and ride when the hotel and ride are TERRIBLE. Before you decide to go to Sapa READ AND RESEARCH CAREFULLY. I speak the language and continuously felt harassed and scammed for more money. Take my advice if you’re going to go and just book a car and a hotel and explore yourself. These “tour guides “ take you to their villages and make you feel bad and forced to buy things from their people and judge and are rude to you if you don’t. This tour was literally hell. Firstly they meant to come at 7am then they change to 6.30am with a very short notice so my husband and I can't eat our breakfast. The driver Hong 29B-148.94 came to the hotel to pick us up. We about to sit in the middle row but he said the seats are reserved? My husband on clutches so best for him to seat in the middle aisle. When ask the guest if they have reserved those seats, they said no. There aren't enough rooms for luggage so one if our luggage have to be between the seats. Unfortunately, when stop for break , the luggage needs to come out so we can get out. Instead of the driver carry it out, he left without helping us and because my husband on clutches the guest have to help us Instead. We never have this experience before in Vietnam so we feel shock at this behaviour. He's very rude and unhelpful . Not just us who feel that but the rest of the guests feel the same too. I am very delighted for this trip, and our tour guide named “Viet” pay close attention to everyone ensuring safety throughout. This is a 12 hours from hotel to Halong Bay and back so we are highly dependent on them. Gentle reminder to future travellers: Remember to avoid buying the pearl accessories onboard the “Stella” I paid 50USD for a necklace and found them to be made of plastic and this was confirm by experts. I was kinda upset and felt cheated as everyone was kind onboard. This is the only negative comment I found upsetting. Read more Written February 25, 2024
  • jaikep2022 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles A complete disregard for customer safety and well-being with appalling customer service! I am leaving this review to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the service provided by Local Tours Vietnam. My travel agent booked a luxury Limousine bus transfer from Ha Giang to Hanoi through your agency, with the departure scheduled for 6:30 PM. Upon returning to Ha Giang at 3:20 PM after a four-day motorbike Loop, I immediately contacted the number provided on my booking confirmation to confirm the pickup time and location. To my dismay, I was informed by the representative that the bus had already departed. Despite my insistence that the scheduled departure time was 6:30 PM, the representative repeatedly insisted that the bus had left and accused me of being at fault. Furthermore, the representative claimed that attempts had been made to contact me to notify me of a change in departure time to 4:00 PM. However, I received no such communication. During the phonecall, i received a WhatsApp message informing me of the change of departure time (what a coincidence) Even if there had been a change, I contacted the office well before the revised departure time and was willing to proceed accordingly. Despite my willingness to cooperate, the representative refused to provide assistance, resorted to verbal abuse, and abruptly ended the call. Subsequent attempts by a local motorbike guide to communicate with the representative were also met with hostility and refusal to assist. As a result of Local Tours Vietnam's incompetence and appalling customer service, my travel companions and I were left stranded in Northern Vietnam, necessitating an additional expense of £50 to secure alternative transportation to ensure we do not miss our scheduled flight tomorrow. This experience has been incredibly distressing and has tarnished my perception of the company. Read more Written February 22, 2024

Excellent tour & brilliant tour guide with the right amount of talking & letting us have our own time. Our guide was called DAN. He was outstanding. We were met at our hotel on time. We had a mini bus. Perfect size and the air con was just right. DAN was brilliant. Talked to us, showed us the sights and was very polite. We toured the coconut farm, river boat tour and of course went on the smaller boats which were incredible. The bee farm and honey Tea was incredible. This experience was magical, fun and I had the best holiday. We departed around 7-45am and returned to our hotel around 5pm. This is the best tour in my opinion. Both Dan and the four made our day. Large cruise ships previously had to anchor offshore and use tenders to ferry passengers to the city’s wharf. As of November 2018 the opening of Halong’s international passenger port changes all that allowing ships to dock at the port adjacent to a brand new Hon Gai International Passenger Terminal.

There is really nothing in the Halong Bay area/port area to see except Halong Bay itself.

Sightseeing:

Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Ha Long Bay is considered the most outstanding attraction in Vietnam. Its breathtaking scenery includes caves, huge rock arches, peaceful coves and some 3,000 limestone islets that rise out of the Gulf of Tonkin. Ha Long means "descending dragon". According to legend, it was an enormous beast that cut the fantastic bay from the rocks as it thrashed its way out to the sea. Vietnamese poets traditionally have extolled the beauty of this romantic area, where awesome rock formations are one of the most exotic, natural wonders in the world.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Junk boats leave from Tuan Chau International Passenger Port, a modern facility, about a 20 minute taxi ride away.

It's about 45 mins by junk to the karsts, so don't waste your time with a 2-hour junk trip - make it at least 4 hours & preferably 6. A group of 8 to 20 can hire a junk on-spec from a pier for peanuts, around $10pp. So much better and cheaper than a crowded ship's junk excursion. The experience of sailing amongst the karsts in a junk - it's eerie & lonesome - is very different to looking over the rail of the ship

Hanoi is a 3-4 hour tour away and is best done by cruise organized excursion. The drive is a long one on busy roads that take you through many villages, but also past a lot of rice fields ... so a chance to see rural life in Vietnam. Hanoi itself is definitely worth seeing.

International driving licenses are not accepted in Vietnam. Therefore, there are no car rental companies such as Hertz and Avis etc.

Tourists will be able to take a ferry from the terminal to Cat Ba Island , the largest island in the bay. The ferries, take about 40 minutes and are able to transport motorbikes, cars and minivans.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Hanoi the capital of Vietnam, and also its second largest city, is a fascinating blend of East and West, with Chinese influence from centuries of dominance, and French design from its colonial past. It is largely unspoiled by modern architecture of the 1970s and 80s, and is now going through a modernization that is making it a rising star in Southeast Asia.

Shopping and Food

The national currency is the dong (d?ng, VND), U.S. dollars are widely accepted, the standard exchange rate for small quantities being 16000 dong to US$1.

ATMs are getting more and more common and can be found in most bigger cities and every tourist destination.

You can bargain on practically anything in Vietnam.

Communication:

The people of Vietnam speak Vietnamese as a native language, English is becoming more popular as a second language. English study is obligatory in most schools.

Tuan Chau International Passenger Port (Junk Boats) offers WiFi.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Shopping hours: Daily 0800/0830-2100/2200.

By far the largest holiday of the year is Tet, also known as Vietnamese New Year, which takes place between late January and March following the unisolar Chinese calendar. During the three days of Tet shops close up and everybody heads home to their family, making this a somewhat difficult time to travel in Vietnam.

Hon Gai Pier

Hon Gai Pier is a new departure point that has become quite popular for cruises passing through or heading to Ha Long Bay. Although smaller than other ports, this location can support two international cruise ships arriving at the same time. It was refurbished in 2017 and 2018 and is much smaller than Tuan Chau Port.

Located to the east of Ha Long Bay, near Bai Chay Bridge - the bridge connecting Bai Chay Island with the mainland. Near the pier where trips to Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay will be, there are a few cafes. If you want to find a smaller and more peaceful port than Tuan Chau Port, Hon Gai is an alternative.

Travel time by car between Hanoi city center and Hon Gai pier takes about 3 to 3.5 hours.
