The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

The best travel soaps are multi-use, concentrated, and TSA friendly.

Travel soap – although it’s not something that often comes up in conversation when we’re travel-planning, we all use it. Whether we’re  packing for a safari  trip in Africa,  train travel in Europe , a  Peruvian journey  into the rainforest, a  Southeast Asian expedition , an  Australian Outback  tour, or  beach vacation , we rarely leave home without it. Because the amount of liquid we can fly with is limited, so are our soap choices. Since we value packing light, we’re always looking for ways the items we pack can do double duty. Soap is no exception.

Whether your soap preferences are liquid, bar, multi-use, eco-friendly, scented, unscented, or something entirely different, finding a version that travels well is important. If you’re like me, you consider how and where things are made, the environmental footprint we’re leaving, and the treatment of our animal friends in testing. And then there are those of us with allergies and sensitivities, doing our best to keep our skin happy at home and on the go. There are a lot of options for travel soap, but some products are definitely better than others.

Below are our picks for the best travel soaps – from bar to liquid to, yes, even those that do double duty as a detergent – and containers to pack them in.

How to Choose the Best Soaps for Travel

I always knew there was a difference in scented and unscented soaps, but I had no idea there were so many different travel soap options. The range stretches from soaps that keep us clean or act as laundry detergent to shampoo, dish soap, and the multitaskers that do all of those things at once!

In today’s world, we check labels on the food we consume and the products we purchase. We’re thoughtful of the bigger picture, knowledgeable about the origin of things, and ethically conscious of carbon footprints. We intentionally allow our concern for humanity and the planet to affect our purchasing power. When choosing travel soap, look for:

  • Multi-use products
  • Organic, natural products
  • Products free of fragrances, dyes, parabens and preservatives
  • Essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances
  • Fair trade products
  • Biodegradable
  • Eco-friendly options
  • Anti-bacterial elements
  • Baby-mild/hypoallergenic
  • Concentrated soaps

When we travel, we’re careful in our choice of locations, tours, and even luggage . A  travel backpack  allows us to carry everything we need on our own two shoulders and under the seat in front of us. Why wouldn’t we choose travel soaps by the same criteria of portability and packability?

The Best Overall Travel Soap

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bronners.jpg

The best overall soap for travel is Dr. Bronner’s  magic soap. It consistently gets rave reviews from experienced travelers, including the members of Team Tortuga.

This multi-purpose, vegetable-based Castile soap can act as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and shaving cream, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, insect repellent, and more. Some people even swear by it as toothpaste. It tastes kind of gross.

Multi-use, available in both bar and liquid, concentrated, biodegradable, available world-wide, scented and unscented, fair trade, 100% organic, and not tested on animals; that’s hard to beat.

You can’t go wrong with this magic potion in a bottle or a bar. Buy the big one and take it in a GoToob, or buy it perfectly packaged to fly in a travel-size.

Concentrated & Biodegradable Travel Soaps

These eco-friendly options mean you use less and the soaps breakdown naturally, although they may still contaminate water supplies.

  • Campsuds : available in citronella, lavender and peppermint oil, this soap doubles as insect repellent.
  • Sea to Summit Trek and Travel Liquid Soap : concentrated, biodegradable, and paraben-free, this liquid soap works well for urban and outdoor adventures alike.
  • Lush concentrated soaps : this solid soap is vegan and unpackaged for eco-friendly measures, but also ultra-concentrated–so you get a lot of washes with just a little.

Best travel soap for kids

Hypoallergenic & Child Friendly Travel Soaps

If you’ve got allergies, sensitive skin, or are traveling with a child, you might need to use a  GoToob  to take a small amount of your favorite soap. Try these:

  • Dove Beauty Bar or liquid soap is hypoallergenic and widely available.
  • Neutrogena transparent facial bar is great for people with sensitive skin.
  • Babyganics is great for kids and babies.

The Best Travel Laundry Detergents

Your body isn’t the only thing you need soap to clean while traveling. To wash your clothes on the go, these are the best travel detergents:

  • Laundry soap sheets (Travelon) : Great for hand-washing clothes in your hotel sink, these sheets rehydrate into soap with a bit of water. Since they’re sheets, they’re TSA-compliant, and super compact.
  • Sea to Summit Pocket Laundry Wash : Simply add water to one of these sheets to use as a liquid soap on your laundry.
  • Well Earth Sheets : These laundry detergent sheets come in a compostable package, perfect for zero-waste travel.
  • The Laundress Wash and Stain Bar : The Laundress specializes in soaps for different kinds of clothing, so it’s no surprise that they have a super-portable bar of soap you can use to wash clothes. Since it’s not liquid, it’s TSA-compliant.

Best all in one travel soap

The Best All-in-One Travel Soap Options

All-in-one travel soaps will do it all: hair, body, and face. They even work as travel laundry detergent in a pinch. While our favorite all-in-one travel soap is Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap , these are also great options:

  • Jack Black All-Over Wash : This liquid soap works as a face and body wash, as well as a shampoo.
  • Sea to Summit’s Wilderness Wash : this super-concentrated, all-purpose soap works as a body wash, shampoo, and even for washing clothes and dishes. It’s also biodegradable and safe to use outdoors.

travel bar of soap

The Best Travel Soap Sheets

For an ultra compact soap option that’s not subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, try a travel soap sheet. Soap sheets rehydrate when wet to create suds to clean yourself with.

  • Soap Leaves (Lifeventure) : At roughly the size of a packet of floss, these little soap leaves pack about 50 washes in each container.
  • Buly 1803 : These compact, orange scented soap sheets suds into a full wash’s worth of body and face soap with just a bit of water.

Best travel shampoo

Waterless Shampoos & Shampoo Bars

Perhaps you’ve encountered the aerosol “dry shampoo,” but have you seen the no-rinse shampoo that’s a liquid (carry on sized, of course, that requires no water whatsoever? Just apply, lather, and towel dry. Yep. Really.

  • No Rinse Shampoo : For when you don’t have any water, use this no-rinse, no-water shampoo to clean your hair on the go.
  • Lush Shampoo and Conditioner Bars : Bar isn’t only for bodies. Lush’s shampoo and conditioner bars are like bar soap, for your hair. Like bar soap, they’re great for travel since they aren’t subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule.

Travel soap container

Best Liquid and Bar Soap Travel Containers

The best travel soap containers will be TSA compliant (for liquid soap) and leak-proof. For bar soap, they’ll ideally also provide a way for soap to dry, rather than sitting in a puddly mess.

Matador FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13)

This fabric bar soap container is great for travel because it’s ultralight, compact, and won’t get crushed in your bag like a cheap plastic one. It’s also at once leak-proof and breathable – so your soap will dry inside, but not leak all over the inside of your luggage .

GoToob ($7+)

These reusable, silicon travel containers are our go-to for any liquid, gel, or cream – whether it’s soap, shampoo, or sunblock. They’re easy to fill, and even easier to wash between trips. You’ll find a range of TSA-compliant sizes.

Can You Bring Soap in Your Carry On ?

Yes, you can both liquid soap and bars of soap on a plane in your carry on . If you’re traveling with liquid soap, it must follow the  3-1-1 rule and be under 3.4 ounces (100 ml). You can bring bar soap of any size through airport security.

How to Pack a Bar of Soap

When traveling with a bar of soap, don’t just toss it in your toiletry bag. Invest in a reusable container like Matador’s FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13) to keep it from getting all over your other items. Before you pack it, wipe it down with a towel to avoid any excess moisture in your case. When showering, rest it in a dry spot to help it last longer.

Packing Tips for Travel Soaps

  • Squeeze some of your larger liquid soap into TSA approved containers that are 3.4 ounces or smaller, like those by GoToob .
  • Pack concentrated soaps into contact lens cases.
  • Break down your favorite soap bars into smaller sizes to turn that bar soap into a travel-friendly size.
  • Adopt a multi-use soap, like Dr. Bronner’s , for all of your travel needs.
  • For those with sensitive skin, test a new soap at home prior to travel. Baby products are often a good choice for sensitive skin
  • Check products for allergens (for example coconut oil, argan oil, or other nut based).
  • Dr.Bronner’s is the best multi-purpose travel soap for body, laundry, and hair.
  • Consider switching to bar soaps to make room for in your liquids bag.
  • Use GoToob and Matador travel soap to pack your travel soaps.
  • When choosing a travel soap, look for a multi-use product that can double for hair and body, or even laundry.
  • Take your skin sensitivities into consideration and always test new soaps at home, before you travel.

Elegant Bars of Soap That Let You Ignore Liquid Restrictions

The humble bar of soap. It might not rate a spot on your  toiletries packing list —after all, why bring soap when hotels and vacation rentals provide it for free? But trust us, that generic freebie you find in the bathroom will suck all the moisture from your body. Bringing your own bar guarantees you'll be sudsing up in something agreeable to your skin—and the planet.

The Main Travel Perks to Bar Soap

The airport’s 3-1-1 rule allows for 3.4 ounces max per liquid item, all contained in a one-quart clear bag—and only one bag per person. Packing bar soap frees up that valuable space. If you’re still not convinced, consider these facts: You use 30% less water when you wash with bar soap instead of liquid soap. Liquid soap has 10 times the carbon footprint of bar soap because of its chemical ingredients and wasteful plastic packaging. On top of everything, bar soap generally lasts a heck of a lot longer than liquid soap. Now that you’re on the bar soap bandwagon, here are some tips for traveling with bar soap and a few of our favorites.

Key Tips for Traveling With Bar Soap

  • Storage is key when traveling with bar soap. You may think to just grab a plastic bag and throw it in, but this will become a mess after your first shower. Invest in a compact bar soap travel case, like this plastic one with a wooden rack . It’s water-sealed, so no gooey soap water will spill into your stuff.
  • Make sure to rest your soap in a dry spot while you shower, not in a puddle, as your soap will last longer and stay firmer.
  • It doesn’t hurt to take a moment to rinse out and dry your soap container before you put the soap back in and pack it up. If you’re feeling extra virtuous, dab your soap onto your used towel to dry it a bit more before returning it to the case.

Our Favorite Bar Soaps

The best all-around bar soap.

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil is one of the best skincare brands for sensitive skin. Its Gentle Cleansing Bar  can take off the day’s grime without stripping your skin of moisture. The creamy white bar is actually soap-free, as soap can often leave skin parched. Instead, Cetaphil uses stearic acid, a natural amino acid, as a cleanser. The bar’s suds rinse off easily without leaving any residue behind.

The Best Handmade Bar Soap

The yellow bird dead sea mud soap bar.

If you’re picky about what goes on your skin (no parabens, sulfates, or alcohol, please!), then start buying The Yellow Bird’s bar soaps by the boatload. The line of handmade and vegan soap starts with organic coconut, sunflower, olive, and palm oils, then add in natural ingredients like peppermint and tea tree.

Powdered rosemary and peppermint leaf provide a bit of grit for gentle exfoliation.

The classic drugstore brand’s O.G. amber bar  (the formula hasn’t changed in decades) is hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free—so it doesn’t irritate even the most sensitive of skin. The glycerin-based bar lathers nicely and leaves skin feeling soft and supple, not inflamed or tight.

Its white and pink French clays deeply clean by pulling out toxins, while its blend of coconut, olive, and sustainable palm oils deliver a heavy dose of hydration to the skin. This bar is made for people with dry and/or sensitive skin, and is mild enough to be used on the face.

Fresh Seaberry Exfoliating Soap

Like Herbivore’s pink clay soap, Fresh’s Seaberry soap is no slouch on the looks front. And like the above picks, this bar has the goods to back it up. The Best Travel Soap Case, Dish, Bag or Container

Last Updated on May 22, 2020

Nobody wants mushy, gunky soap getting all over their clothes.

But a bar of soap is often the best cleanser to pack when traveling.

The solution is a travel soap case or bag. They’re perfect for traveling and you can also use them to take a bar of soap to the gym or sports club, but they are not all created equally.

We review a lot of travel gear at TravelingLight.com and feel that the soap case is often an undervalued travel accessory.

This post has a look at what’s on offer and picks out what we think is the best product.

At A Glance: The Best Travel Soap Case

  • #1 Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag – A breathable yet water repellent bag to pack your soap in.
  • #2 Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case – A vented plastic soap case that lets your soap dry without leaking water on your clothes.
  • #3 Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box – A secure case that won’t open unexpectedly.
  • #4 Puting Portable Soap Saver – An economical multipack.

Packing A Bar of Soap vs Body Wash or Shower Gel

What you use at home comes down to personal preference.

But when you are traveling there is a compelling reason to pack soap in a soap holder rather than body wash or shower gel.

Body wash is a liquid and subject to the TSA liquids rule meaning you can only pack travel-size body wash bottles in your carry on luggage.

A bar of soap is solid and not subject to the liquids rule. So you don’t need to put a solid soap bar in your quart-sized baggie when going through the TSA security checkpoint.

You can pack as many soap bar cases as you want in your luggage, it’s even possible to get shampoo bars that work just as well as their liquid counterparts. And a bar of laundry soap allows you to wash your underwear in the hotel sink so you don’t need to pack as many clothes.

By switching liquids for solids you can make packing carry on luggage a lot easier.

Also, a bar of soap lasts a lot longer than body wash. I’ll be lucky is a travel-size bottle of shower gel will last me 2 showers but a bar of soap can last for weeks.

All this means that soap is a great option to pack when traveling, but you do need a travel soap dish or at the very least a ziplock bag to stop your clothes from getting wet from the soap bar.

What Makes A Good Travel Soap Dish?

It might seem like a simple product but there are still some things that a travel soap case needs to do well.

A good travel soap case:

  • Protects Your Soap Bar – It’s important to let soap dry after use. If a bar of soap stays wet too long or it goes all soft and mushy.
  • Doesn’t leak! – You have a quick shower and then immediately pack to get ready to check out your accommodation. Your soap bar is still going to be wet and you’d better hope your travel soap case doesn’t leak or you’ll get gunk all over your suitcase.
  • Is the Right Size – Your soap container needs to be able to fit your soap bars. Make sure your soap holder is the right dimensions to hold the bar of soap that you want to pack but not be too large that it takes up space in your bag.
  • Is Not Too Heavy – We’re all about traveling light here so we don’t want a soap case that’s going to add unnecessary weight to our case.

If you don’t have a soap dish for travel you could always use a plastic ziplock bag for a soap bag. The problem with that is that the soap gets all soggy and it becomes very messy fast.

The following travel soap cases are all available on Amazon if you buy we receive a small commission but it doesn’t affect the price that you pay.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag

travel bar of soap

The Matador soap bag is made with water-repellent material. This means that any splashes don’t penetrate the bag.

The fabric is also breathable so if your soap bar is damp when you put it in the bag it will be dry next time you take it out.

Frequent travelers love this travel soap case. It’s very useful when packing.

  • The design means that the bag stops the gunk from getting on your clothes but allows the soap bar to dry
  • Not easy to get the soap in and out of the bag. Since it’s not a soap case it doesn’t function as a soap dish or a soap holder while you are in the shower.

Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case

travel bar of soap

The Carry-Dri makes some bold claims. A plastic soap case that doesn’t leak but also has vents? Surely that’s not possible.

But yet it seems like they’ve pulled it off. Many people love this soap dish for travel precisely because it’s vented and stops their soap bar from getting soggy but doesn’t leak water drips into your clothes.

If you’ve just recently had a shower it might be an idea to pack this in an outer pocket of your bag just in case. That way any drips that did escape the container would evaporate quickly.

  • It’s vented so your bar of soap can dry off
  • Water won’t spill on your clothes
  • It will still get messy inside the case and you’ll need to wash it every now and then
  • The case is significantly larger than the soap bar it holds

Carry-Dri made this video that shows their product.

Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box

travel bar of soap

The Kiasona is a hard plastic soap box that fits a normal-sized soap bar.

The included band gives extra security that the case won’t open accidently but can be a little tight to get on and off.

Inside the case, there is a sponge that is designed to wick away moisture from the soap bar so that it retains its shape.

  • Airtight and doesn’t leak
  • Despite the sponge, the soap bar can still degrade and become a bit soggy

PUTING Portable Soap Saver

travel bar of soap

The Puting brand of soap dishes is a more affordable option. You can get a pack of 4 soap dishes from the same price that other sellers charge for 1 dish.

That makes it a great option if you are taking more than 1 bar of soap on your trip, for example, a shampoo bar or a laundry bar.

It’s also economical if your traveling partner needs a soap case too.

  • Economical multipack
  • They don’t close airtight (although some people might view this as a pro)

Final Thoughts

The best travel soap case is a thing of personal preference. There is some innovation but most products are relatively similar. The ones we’ve looked at in this post give a fair representation of what’s on offer.

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

There's nothing worse than opening your luggage to find soapy dampness all over your clothes or electronics! Luckily, I discovered travel soap cases, which have really come a long way since their invention. Learn about some of my favourite picks...

travel bar of soap

Today, soap is on almost every traveler's  packing list . Let's be real: even if you stay at a hotel that provides shampoo and soap, the free stuff is usually not that great.

I always like to take a favorite soap and shampoo bar with me for the start of a longer trip. Then I usually buy new ones locally to explore new scents. Why? I like that soaps and shampoo bars aren't as bulky as their liquid counterparts.

The only issue is storing them properly. You don't want wet soap bars in your luggage, especially not if you also have books and electronics in your backpack or suitcase. While a plastic bag would do the job, it wouldn't do it well.

Enter the travel soap case: The perfect solution to storing soap when traveling. In this article, I'll introduce you to 10 of the best travel soap cases and give you some helpful info.

How Do You Store Soap When Traveling?

I already mentioned that a mere plastic bag or wrap isn't the solution. So, what is it? There are two common ways to store soap while on the road.

Travel Soap Cases

The travel soap case, also called a travel soap container or box, is usually square, oval, or round. It can be made from plastic, metal, and other materials like bamboo. Plastic-free options are becoming more popular these days.

A travel soap case is made from a lower and upper half. The lower half sometimes has a separate soap dish in it. The two halves seal the case when closed so that no water escapes.

Travel Soap Bags

A good travel soap bag is a suitable alternative if you have nothing heavy in your luggage. A soap bag isn't as sturdy as a soap case, so your soap can easily be squashed, especially if it's still wet.

Some soap bags are cool though. I like  Travel Buddy's travel soap bag . It's awesome if you carry a  backpack  because you can attach it to the outside. This solves the problem of soap leaking inside your bag!

Travel Soap Bag By Ace Travel Buddy

When Was the Travel Soap Case Invented?

Soap has existed for over 4,000 years, and soap dishes for at least 1,400 years. Soap containers from the 18th century already had important features for modern soap cases. They could be beautiful but weren't exactly made for traveling light.

It seems impossible to pinpoint the first-ever travel soap case. But it's safe to say plastic travel soap containers as we know them today haven't been around earlier than the 20th century.

What to Keep In Mind When Buying Travel Soap Containers

There are three important things to consider when choosing a suitable travel soap container.

3. Material

You don't want something flimsy. It must be strong enough not to be squashed by everything else in your pack.

Soaps can come in all sorts of shapes, usually round or square. Ensure you buy a container that suits the soap you use.

Buy a case that is just big enough to fit your soap. If the soap container is too big, your soap will move around too much, making the inside messy.

And if it's too small, you'll have a problem closing the container once the soap is in it!

10 Great Soap Storage Solutions for Travelers

10. best small travel soap case.

Buying Guide: Best Travel Soap Cases

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 25, 2023 | Travel Gear , Travel Tips

When you are traveling, one of the most difficult items to take with you is bar soap.

Whilst it is fine straight out of the packet, once it’s used it becomes wet and messy, potentially affecting the other items in your toiletry bag.

The solution is to use a travel soap container .

A good travel case for soap is designed to protect both your luggage and the soap itself.

It should be made of durable material, seal tightly to keep in any leaks, and come with features that preserve your soap.

These can include things like ventilation holes, some type of insert to absorb additional water, or slotted trays to keep the bar elevated.

Not only do these design details stop your soap from turning into a soggy mess, but they also make the case much easier to clean when you get home.

Here is a selection of some of the best bar soap containers available and the features that make them so useful.

Before we start, let’s take a look at the things to consider when choosing the perfect travel soap container.

Travel Soap Case

How To Choose The Best Travel Soap Case

Choosing the perfect soap container for your travels shouldn’t be too complicated.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • A good travel case for soap should be leak-free! Nobody likes a leaking soap container, so pick something solid that won’t leak on all your precious things.
  • A good soap case should be light, and small. After all, nobody wants to waste space with a big soap case.
  • A good container for your soap should protect your soap bar so that you can use it again!

Travel Soap Case

MARLOWE Travel Soap Holder

This unique travel case for soap is sealed with a sturdy zipper, so you can be confident that it won’t leak.

It is the perfect size to pop into your backpack for trips to the gym and stows easily in your toiletry bag when you are traveling.

travel bar of soap

The Marlowe travel soap holder is designed to accommodate all bar soaps from the MARLOWE range – and at 5.8 x 2.6 x 1 inches it is large enough to hold most large bar soaps.

The zipper runs almost all the way around the case, so putting in the bar is easy.

Soft and flexible, it is made from an easy-to-clean material that won’t discolor or become slimy over time, so it will always look as good as the day you bought it.

And unlike some travel soap containers that are made from brittle plastic, you can be confident that this case won’t crack. The zipper feels well made and sturdy, yet the entire case is lightweight enough to easily pop into your luggage.

You will also find the flexibility of this case useful for storage – when it is not in use you can just fold it and tuck it away ready for your travels in the future.

Kiasona Travel Soap Case

The designers of this soap travel case really thought of every little detail, making it the perfect accessory when you are on the go.

The sturdy box comes with a silicone band that wraps right around it, ensuring that the lid stays firmly in place and that there are absolutely no leaks.

travel bar of soap

The Kiasona travel soap box also comes with an innovative soap mat that sits inside the holder, absorbing any excess water.

This is key to keeping your bar of soap in a good condition and preventing it from becoming mushy and soggy – a common problem with other soap containers.

It also makes it so much easier to clean than with other cases, where you tend to get quite a build-up of soap residue at the bottom. The entire unit feels very durable.

Whilst being tough, the plastic shell has enough flexibility to stand up to being tossed around in your luggage without cracking.

The lid fits very snugly and creates a nice, tight seal, but the strong silicone band adds an extra layer of security.

Gripping firmly to the material of the case, it is such a simple solution to the risk of the lid popping off whilst you are traveling.

Quatish Travel Soap Container

This Quatish bar soap container set comes with two cases, so it is ideal for when you are traveling with a partner.

Made from durable and non-toxic plastic, it is available in six different colors, making it easy to match with your other travel accessories.

travel bar of soap

Each container is lightweight and comes with a slotted layer. This holds the soap out of any excess water that may be in the bottom of the case, allowing it to dry more efficiently and stopping it from becoming mushy.

This also makes the case much easier to clean at the end of your trip. It is well ventilated and comes with non-slip feet to keep it securely in place during use.

The lid is flexible rather than rigid, which makes it easy to put on or remove. It also means it can easily withstand the typical knocks and bumps associated with travel, without splitting or cracking.

When closed, the seal is extremely tight, so you can feel confident that no liquid whatsoever will leak into your bag.

Measuring around 4.6 x 3.3 x 1.9 inches, this travel soap container has plenty of room for most standard soap bars.

PORTINEER Carry-Dri MAX Bar Soap Holder

This cleverly designed soap travel case is perfect for the gym or to throw in your luggage when taking a trip.

travel bar of soap

Available in blue, white, or a pack of two containing both colors, the Portineer case is constructed from a long-lasting ABS material that is designed to cope easily with being tossed into a toiletry bag and bumped around with your other accessories.

Its hinge feels incredibly strong and durable, plus it opens and closes smoothly. The case has a handy latch design that means it snaps securely shut when you close it.

The latch actually tucks inside one of the vents, which not only reduces the size of the case but also prevents it from unlatching accidentally. It also has a reliable silicone seal that you can depend upon to prevent any leaks.

Despite being so well sealed, this container also has a patented vent design so that your soap dries out properly after use. This stops it from becoming mushy or gooey, making your bar last longer.

Measuring 5.1 x 3.6 x 1.6 inches, this case is designed to hold most standard soap bars.

Bossman Travel Soap Case

If you are looking for a more rugged aesthetic, then this may be the best travel soap case for you!

With an attractive matte black finish and a distinctive logo, this case has such a slim design that it is perfect for your gym bag, backpack, or even your pocket!

travel bar of soap

The Bossman travel soap container has a unique locking design that snaps tightly closed and feels secure, yet is easy to open when needed.

A great bonus is that the lid is designed to pop right up and stays up until you choose to close it again, which makes it ideal for one-handed use.

The simple addition of ridges at the bottom of the container keeps the soap slightly elevated, stopping it from sitting in a puddle of water.

This prevents it from turning into messy jelly and keeps the bar in good condition at all times, which helps it last longer too.

The plastic is every bit as tough and durable as it looks, so you don’t need to worry about the case cracking in your bag, whilst the enclosed design prevents any leaks and keeps the rest of your luggage totally dry.

Final Thoughts On Travel Cases For Soap

A good soap travel case will make it easy to take your bar soap anywhere without worrying about leaks or mess.

I hope this guide has helped you find the perfect soap container for your travels.

Top Product Overview

Top products, flatpak soap bar case.

Matador Soap Bar Case - Waterproof & Leakproof Bar Soap Travel Case, Quick Dry Soap Pouch for Standard Soap Bars, Shampoo Bars & Conditioner Bars

The FlatPak soap bar case is one of the lightest and smallest cases for soap you can get. It’s made from waterproof ripstop nylon and it features a roll-top with buckle closure, which ensures that the soap will never leak through the bag. On the other hand, the case allows the soap to dry through the fabric, so it never gets mushy.

In addition to being extremely waterproof , this travel soap case is also super lightweight and durable. Unlike the plastic soap cases, this won’t take up too much space in your toiletry bag. Also, because it’s made from fabric, you can fold it and manipulate it to fit into pretty much any pocket – if the soap bar can fit, then the case can as well.

This travel soap case is TSA-approved , which should make your time at checkpoints much shorter. Plus, it’s worth noting that the case is waterproof on both sides. The soap can’t leak through the bag, and water can’t penetrate the case from outside to make your soap all mushy and slippery.

When it comes to lightweight fabric soap cases, the FlatPak soap bar case is one of the best options available on the market. The only downside is the high price point, but it is one of those things that you will be buying for life, so I think it’s worth it.

  • Waterproof and leakproof
  • Very lightweight and packable
  • Extremely durable

Product Information

  • Material: Waterproof ripstop nylon
  • Dimensions: 4” x 2.4” x 1.3” max
  • Weight: 0.4 ounces

Snowkingdom 2 Pack Clear Travel Soap Box

Snowkingdom 2 Pack Clear Travel Soap Box Holder Case Container Leak Proof Shower Bathroom Home Outdoor Hiking Camping

The Snowkingdom pack of two soap boxes is a great option if you want something simple and affordable. The pack includes two plastic boxes and two little mesh bags that provide an extra layer of protection. The mesh bag absorbs water and residue, ensuring the soap bar doesn’t get mushy while it’s inside the container.

It’s also a great idea to leave your soap in the mesh bag while you’re using it since it can create lather quickly without making the soap too mushy. My mind was blown when I first tried this, so definitely check it out if you haven’t already.

Also, the inside of the box is ribbed, so the soap bar shouldn’t stick to the plastic even if you put it inside without the mesh bag. It’s worth noting that this specific soap container doesn’t feature a drying rack, so if you don’t use the mesh bag, the soap will get a little mushy. There aren’t any drainage holes either, so the box should stay completely leakproof as long as it’s intact.

The only downside of this soap box is that it can’t withstand a lot of abuse. If it gets thrown around a lot or squished too hard, the plastic will crack and the box will become useless. Luckily, you get two of these in the pack, so if one does break, you’ll have a backup at the ready!

  • Great value for money
  • Holds even Dove soap bars
  • Mesh bags included with containers
  • Plastic will crack under too much pressure
  • No drainage rack inside
  • Material: PP Plastic
  • Dimensions: 4.7” x 3.1” x 1.8”
  • Weight: 4 ounces

Quatish Travel Soap Holder

Quatish Soap Holder 2 Pack, Travel Soap Container with Lid, Portable Bar Soap Holder, Leakproof Soap Box with Perforations, Round Soap Dishes for Traveling, Camping, Gym (Green)

The Quatish travel soap case is a great option if you usually buy round soap bars. This round case is made from polypropylene plastic , so it’s very sturdy and durable. Also, the Quatish soap holder is actually sold in packs of two, so you’re getting great value for your money!

This soap holder features a layered design, with a drying rack inside that lets the soap drain and prevents it from sticking to the case. It’s very easy to dump any excess water from the case, plus this design ensures that the soap doesn’t get mushy and disintegrates inside the holder.

The case is waterproof and leakproof , so you can keep it in the shower. Also, although the case features a round design, it’s big enough to hold some smaller rectangular and oval soap bars. The soap holder is available in six colors, and no matter which one you pick, you’re getting two travel cases for less than $9!

  • The layered design ensures soap doesn’t get mushy
  • The round case won’t fit all square and rectangular soap bars
  • Material: Polypropylene
  • Dimensions: 3.74” x 3.74” x 1.57”

Kiasona 2Pack Travel Soap Box

Kiasona 2Pack Travel Soap Box,soap Bar Holder Dish Container Case with Sponge Saver&Silicone Band,Strong Sealing,Leak Proof,Portable,Best for Bathroom,Gym,School,Camping,Hiking,Vacation(Pack of 2)

The Kisaona travel soap box is another excellent option. It’s a plastic soap case that comes with a sponge inside, which is supposed to absorb any liquids to keep the soap from becoming mushy. It does an excellent job, but it does mean that there’s another part of the travel soap container that you need to clean after a few uses.

The plastic soap box features a removable lid that is held in place with a silicone band. The band is extra sturdy and does an excellent job at ensuring a watertight seal on the case. It won’t leak even when you turn it upside down, and it prevents water from seeping inside the case.

Would it hold up if you were to submerge the soap box entirely underwater? I’m not sure, but that’s not something you should be doing if you don’t want mushy soap anyway! When it comes to keeping the box in the shower, it should keep the soap completely dry until you take it out and use it.

This bundle includes two soap cases with all their accessories, and it’s very affordable. If you’re on a tight budget and you’re looking for a great deal, this is one of the best travel soap cases to buy!

  • The sponge keeps soap from becoming mushy
  • Takes a while to clean all the pieces
  • Material: Plastic and silicone
  • Dimensions: 4.6” x 3.3” x 1.8”
  • Weight: 4.6 ounces

Marlowe Travel Soap Holder

MARLOWE. No. 401 Travel Soap Case with Zipper Closure, 1 Portable Soap Holder for Bar Soap, Durable Soap Container for Traveling, Vacations, Camping & Gym

The Marlowe travel soap holder is a great option if you prefer a fabric soap case. It’s made from waterproof fabric and it features a zipper, so there’s no way this soap case can accidentally pop open. It’s both leakproof and waterproof, and it’s just the right size to hold a Marlow soap bar.

It can also hold other soap bars, and because it is fabric, you can even squeeze in a round bar in this case. The material is soft and plasticky, and it’s able to let the soap breathe so it doesn’t get mushy inside the container. Also, the material is slightly transparent, and the soap inside makes the case look a little grimy from the outside.

Although this case is a bit pricey for what it is, the high-quality materials and excellent performance make it worth every penny. It’s much more durable and reliable than a classic plastic case, and it should hold up for several years. The case is also very easy to clean – you just need to run it through the water to rinse off any residue and that’s it.

  • Durable waterproof zipper
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Easy to clean
  • Won’t fit bigger soap bars
  • Material: Waterproof fabric
  • Dimensions: 5.8” x 2.6” x 1”
  • Weight: 0.8 ounces

PUTING Plastic Soap Container

4pcs Plastic Soap Holder Container Soap Saver Box Case for Bathroom Shower Home Outdoor Camping Set of 4

The Puting set of plastic soap cases includes four soap containers , making it an excellent option if you need several of these cases. They’re all standard plastic travel soap cases with a drying rack inside and a PE lid that ensures a watertight seal on the box. The lid is flexible, so it’s very easy to put on, and it will not crack that easily under pressure.

The drying rack is a nice addition because you can keep your soap on it even at the hotel, and the bar will stay dry and not mushy. But you have to take it out of the container, otherwise, all the residue will collect at the bottom of the soap box, and it will be very annoying to clean.

It’s also worth noting that you should drain any water before you seal the box and put it in your toiletry bag. The drying rack works only when the box is in the regular position – turn it upside down, and all that water will get back on the soap and make it mushy.

The Puting travel soap case is large enough to hold even Dove bars, which is very convenient. It won’t be able to hold 9 and 10-ounce bars, but anything smaller than that should fit nicely in the container.

  • Great value
  • Drying rack inside
  • A flexible lid ensures a watertight seal
  • The plastic box can crack under pressure
  • Does not fit 9oz bars (and bigger)
  • Material: PP and PE plastic
  • Dimensions: 3.75” x 15” x 2.5”
  • Weight: 6.4 ounces

Foamie Travel Buddy

Foamie Travel Buddy with Removable Shelf - Innovative Travel Box to Help Keep Your Shampoo or Conditioner Bars - Silicone Seal Ensures No Spills On-The-Go - Eco-Friendly Packaging

If you use Foamie soap bars, this is definitely the best travel soap container to get. And even if you don’t use their bars, it’s worth checking out this eco-friendly case. It’s made from 80% wheat fiber and 20% recycled polypropylene, so it is entirely sustainable.

The travel container features a silicone band that guarantees a watertight seal , as well as a flexible drying rack inside, which prevents residue build-up.

The only issue with the Foamie Travel Buddy is that it is designed to fit Foamie bars specifically, so it’s not going to fit every bar of soap you can get your hands on. But if you want to get a product that’s affordable and 100% sustainable, this is your best option.

Also, it’s worth noting that the case is a bit difficult to open, which is a really good thing. It just means that it’s a lot harder for the lid to come undone accidentally, ensuring that the container will remain sealed no matter what.

  • Eco-friendly and sustainable
  • Watertight seal
  • Quite small – made for Foamie bars
  • Material: 80% wheat fiber, 20% recycled polypropylene, silicone
  • Dimensions: 5.24” x 3.35” x 1.57“
  • Weight: 1.8 ounces

Dr. Squatch Travel Bag for Bar Soap

Dr. Squatch Travel Bag for Bar Soap – Take Your Beloved Soap on The Road with This Super-Absorbent Drying Canvas Bag

The Dr. Squatch travel bag is specifically designed for this brand’s soap bars, so it’s by far the best option if you use them. Dr. Squatch soap bars are quite big, and they don’t really fit in most other travel cases.

This travel bag is made from heavy-weight burlap linen, which is extremely absorbent . It allows to soap bar to dry very quickly, so it doesn’t turn to mush when you pack it.

Also, the bag features a drawstring closure with an Egyptian Undyed Wetspun Warp, which has a higher tensile strength than even cotton. The entire soap case is very sturdy and reliable, and it’s absolutely perfect for Dr. Squatch bars!

It’s worth noting that the linen bag is not waterproof, so you shouldn’t keep it in the shower. Also, you should consider putting the soap case in a ziplock plastic bag, just to ensure that it doesn’t leak in your luggage.

  • Perfect size for Dr. Squatch soap bars
  • Absorbent material dries soap quickly
  • Not waterproof
  • Material: Burlap linen
  • Dimensions: 4” x 4”
  • Weight: 0.6 oz

What To Look For

Plastic or fabric.

Would you rather have a soap case made from plastic or fabric? Plastic soap cases are more common, and they’re generally the cheaper option. They’re usually waterproof and leakproof, but they can get crushed upon heavy impact. That won’t happen with fabric soap cases, since they are much more flexible.

Also, fabric cases are lighter and more packable, and they take up virtually no space in your bag when they’re empty.

The main advantage of a fabric soap case is that you can manipulate it to fit into smaller spaces. A plastic soap requires more space in your toiletry bag, so go with fabric if you usually struggle to close your bag. Also, fabric soap cases are a bit easier to clean, since you just need to wash them out to make them pristine again.

Another great thing about fabric soap bags is that you can fit bars of different shapes inside them. They’ll fit round and oval bars as well as square ones, while a square plastic container might not be able to hold a large, round soap bar.

What Soap Bars Do You Usually Use?

The travel soap cases featured in this review will fit most soap bars on the market. But, there are some brands that make extra-large soap bars, and those won’t always fit in the classic soapboxes. If you use a brand that makes really big bars be sure to check if they offer a travel case for their soap because that’s the easiest way to ensure that your bar will fit in the travel case.

Alternatively, you should look at the dimensions of each of the soap cases, and check whether they’re big enough to hold your favorite soap bar. Also, the shape of the soap bar matters. Most of the boxes featured here are square or oval because that’s the shape of most soap bars.

But if you usually use rounder soap bars as Dove makes, you’ll need to take a closer look at the dimensions to see if the bar can fit in the travel case you want. Or just get the travel case that’s the same shape like your favorite soap bar!

Best Travel Soap Case: Our Top Picks

Still not sure which travel soap case to get? Go with one of our top picks and you won’t have any regrets!

If you like the idea of a fabric soap case, the FlatPak is by far the best option out there. It’s entirely waterproof and leakproof, with Hypalon rolltop closure and a sturdy YKK buckle. Also, the fabric is breathable, and it will let the soap dry, so it doesn’t get mushy.

The case is a lot lighter and more compact than standard plastic cases, and it will easily fit into any luggage.

  • Waterproof & Leakproof: Fear no more soap spills with this waterproof and leakproof Matador soap pocket. Put it in a bag and you'll never have to worry the soap leaking into your stuff!
  • Flexible Fabric: 3x lighter and 6x more compact than traditional plastic soap holder. The fabric design allows this travel soap case to adapt to the size of soap bars

The Snowkingdom soap holder is a great option if you prefer plastic cases. You get two plastic soapboxes, and each comes with a mesh bag. Store the soap inside the mesh bag to create an instant lather when you use it, but also to keep it from getting mushy and falling apart inside the case. The soap holder is made from non-toxic polypropylene for excellent durability.

  • Set of 2 Clear Soap holder, Come with 2 pcs soap bag.
  • The snappy latch design allows the lids snap on with two pins securely, makes the soap box and liquid locked firmly and will not slip out while in your handbag or carry-on luggage

In case you usually use round soap bars, you’re better off getting a round soap holder. The Quatish soap case is a great option because it features a layered design with a drying rack.

The rack prevents the soap from touching the bottom of the case and makes it super easy to dump any excess water that drains from the soap bar. The case is durable, waterproof, and leakproof, and it’s easily one of the best travel soap cases you can get your hands on!

  • Create a clean, dry and spotless gym bag or suitcase with the three-piece soap dish, drainage tray and lid from Quatish. The bottom tray collects water runoff, and the slotted layer ensures that the soap stays dry after use, which will prolong the life of your soap. The modern, clean design complements any decor, and it is a handy helper during your traveling.
  • Leak Proof:This case is very durable. It comes with a leak-proof design and can be locked. The tight lid prevents any possible leaking of the wet soap. The locked design will keep the case from opening unexpectedly. This soap case is handy for carrying your own soap, and keep suitcase clean.

How to Carry Soap when Traveling

We may earn a commission from purchases made through our links.

Today I thought we’d take a quick look at how to carry soap for travel. This is something you will invariably come across especially if you want travel with your favourite bar of soap. I would also recommend checking out some solid bar soaps that can be used as laundry soap, shampoo and body soap all in one. My favourite currently is the JR Liggett shampoo bar . While it is called a shampoo bar it can be used for anything. Another great option is the Dr Bronners bar soap .

So the first thing people think of when travelling with a bar of soap is to put it into a plastic resealable ziplock bag. This will cause the soap to get a bit soft and cause a sticky mess in the plastic. So its not the best method. The next method I’ve recently learned about is using a scrubbing towel or scrubbing glove. Put the soap in the middle and it will dry through the pores of the fabric.

The next two methods are ones that I personally use. The one that I’ve used for the longest time is the JR Liggett travel EZ-pouch . It comes with a nice shampoo bar and it doubles as a really nice storage pouch even if the soap is a little damp. Although I recommend letting the soap dry on the sink before packing it. The last method is using the Matador Soap Case . This is a newer proprietary material soap holder. It has a one way permeable layer so that water can dry out from the inside but doesn’t get in from the outside. This gives a bit more piece of mind as it means the water won’t seep out and the soap will actually dry without any mess leaking out.

I use “eco-friendly” Kind brand unscented laundry sheets. You can easily tear off a piece for smaller washes. For stains, I slice off a piece of The Soap Works Stain-Remover Laundry Bar (from a Canadian company) and pack it in a small plastic bag.

Darlene Sanchez

Wow I didn’t know there are so many laundry soap options❣️ I am going to France for a month traveling with a carryon luggage and personal item only backpack. I have been following Travel Fashion Girl website since 2016. I love all the helpful information and the links to items shared for purchase❣️

Colleen Sachs

I subscribed to the Earth Breeze laundry sheets over a year ago – no more big plastic jugs!! Stuffed several into a ziploc for 3 weeks in Ireland and tore some in half or used a whole sheet, depending on how much I sink washed at various stops. Next trip: 2 weeks in Spain in Feb – already committed my brain to using the 10 piece Essential wardrobe!!

Nancy

This was a great article that introduced me to a lot of options for sink washing that I was not aware of. I’ve used Woolite packets and Travelon sheets for years, but I’m going to give SOAK a try. The rinsing is always the worst part of hand washing, so I’m intrigued by the idea of no rinse needed. I’m going to try it at home first just to see how it works. Thanks for all the information you’ve shared through the years. It’s been so helpful when packing for a trip!

Susan T

Great options. I wish more were unscented.

Janet

Oh my gosh, too many choices. I had no idea there were this many to choose from

How to store soap while travelling

Are you wondering how you should store your travel soap on a journey? In this article we’ll look at how to safely store bars of soap or solid shampoo bars in a suitcase or backpack while travelling, without making a huge mess!

Is soap considered a liquid in hand luggage?

One of the benefits of travelling with solid soap instead of shower gel or other liquid soap, is that soap bars are not considered a liquid for handluggage, and not counted under the 100ml rule.

Unfortunately, when bar soap gets wet, it can get sticky thanks to the soapy residue, which can make it difficult to store.

Our favourite soap box

travel bar of soap

Our favourite soap box is available at Amazon US , available in black and white, and helps to keep your soap dry with the built-in draining tray. Meanwhile, the product comes with a silicon band to help ensure your soap is kept safe within your luggage.

Resealable plastic bag

If you’re on a budget, then there’s nothing cheaper than the clear resealable plastic bags that are provided for your handluggage liquids given away at airport security.

If you travel with a dry, sealed bar of soap, then simply pick up an extra resealable bag before the security check, and keep for when you use your soap. You can then keep your soap inside, but remember to take out your other liquids first!

You can also use any other sort of resealable plastic bag or ziplock style bag, for example those used in the kitchen.

If you travel frequently and want something more rugged, then why not try a specialised soap container or bag? This is especially useful if you usually travel with handluggage only and want to minimise the amount of liquids you’re carrying.

Amazon offer several options including the following from Amazon US and Amazon UK . Check out Amazon’s most popular here , which has a 4.5 star rating from over 2,500 reviews.

An alternative to a bag is to use a tin. Again, on Amazon you can find several designs specifically for soap, or you may be able to repurpose another tin you already own.

How to Travel with Bar Soap: DIY Cases, Compact Bars & More

By Happy Sharer

travel bar of soap

Introduction

Traveling with bar soap can be a great way to save money and reduce waste. But it’s important to know how to pack and store the soap properly so that it doesn’t get damaged or become a mess in your luggage. In this article, we’ll explore the best ways to travel with bar soap, from making a DIY travel soap case to buying a compact bar soap and storing it in a pill case or other container.

Make a DIY Travel Soap Case

Make a DIY Travel Soap Case

If you’re looking for a unique way to store your bar soap while traveling, consider making your own travel soap case. This is a simple and inexpensive project that requires just a few materials and tools. Here are the steps to follow:

Gather Supplies

To make a travel soap case, you’ll need fabric, thread, scissors, a sewing machine (or needle and thread), and a ruler.

Measure and Cut Material

Use the ruler to measure out a piece of fabric that is 8 inches by 6 inches. Cut the fabric along the lines with the scissors.

Sew or Glue the Soap Case Together

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the wrong sides facing each other. Sew or glue the edges together, leaving a gap at one end for the soap. Turn the case inside out and press flat.

Buy a Compact Bar Soap

When shopping for bar soap to take on your travels, look for a compact bar that is easy to store and won’t take up too much space in your bag. There are some great options available, including specialty soaps that are designed specifically for travelers.

Look for Bars with Low Moisture Content

Choose a bar soap that has a low moisture content, as this will help prevent it from melting or becoming a mess in your bag. Look for bars that are made with natural ingredients and don’t contain any artificial fragrances or preservatives.

Consider Specialty Soaps

There are some great specialty soaps available that are designed specifically for travelers. These bars are usually smaller in size and come in a variety of scents and formulas. They can also be easier to store in your luggage since they often come in their own convenient containers.

Cut Your Soap into Smaller Pieces

If you’re traveling with a large bar of soap, you may want to consider cutting it into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to store and will also help prevent it from breaking or becoming a mess in your bag.

Use a Soap Slicer

If you have a soap slicer, you can easily cut the bar of soap into smaller pieces. Simply place the bar of soap in the slicer and adjust the settings to the desired thickness. Then, use the handle to slice the soap into even pieces.

Cut the Soap by Hand

If you don’t have a soap slicer, you can still cut the bar of soap into smaller pieces by hand. Use a sharp knife to carefully cut the soap into thin slices. Be sure to use caution when handling the knife and keep the soap away from children.

Put the Soap in a Ziplock Bag

Once you’ve cut the bar of soap into smaller pieces, you’ll need to find a way to store them. Consider putting the pieces in a ziplock bag to keep them dry and protected. Here’s what to keep in mind when choosing the right size bag.

Choose the Right Size Bag

Make sure to choose a bag that is large enough to hold all of the soap pieces without being too bulky. A gallon-sized bag should be more than enough for a single bar of soap.

Keep the Soap Dry

To ensure that the soap stays dry and protected, be sure to seal the bag securely. You may also want to consider adding a few drops of essential oil to the bag to help keep the soap fresh and fragrant.

Pack a Soap Dish for Easy Storage

Pack a Soap Dish for Easy Storage

If you’re planning on using your bar soap during your travels, it’s a good idea to pack a soap dish for easy storage. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing the right material for the soap dish.

Choose the Right Material for the Soap Dish

Look for a soap dish that is made from a durable material such as plastic or stainless steel. Avoid materials that can easily break or chip, such as ceramic or glass.

Consider a Reusable Container

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly option, consider a reusable container that you can refill with bar soap. These containers are usually made from silicone or other flexible materials and can be easily stored in your bag.

Wrap the Soap in a Foil or Plastic Wrap

Wrap the Soap in a Foil or Plastic Wrap

If you’d like to protect your bar soap further, consider wrapping it in a foil or plastic wrap. This will help keep the soap clean and dry and will also prevent it from becoming a mess in your bag.

Choose the Right Size Wrap

Be sure to choose a wrap that is large enough to cover the entire bar of soap. If you’re using a foil wrap, you may want to double it up for extra protection.

Keep the Soap Protected

When wrapping the soap, be sure to secure the wrap tightly around the bar. This will help keep the soap clean and dry and will also prevent it from breaking or becoming a mess in your bag.

Store Your Soap in a Pill Case or Other Container

Store Your Soap in a Pill Case or Other Container

If you’d like to keep your bar soap organized while traveling, consider storing it in a pill case or other container. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing the right size pill case.

Choose the Right Size Pill Case

Make sure to choose a pill case that is large enough to fit all of the soap pieces without being too bulky. A standard pill case should be more than enough for a single bar of soap.

Traveling with bar soap can be a great way to save money and reduce waste. By following these tips, you can ensure that your bar soap stays safe and protected while you’re on the go. From making a DIY soap case to buying a compact bar and storing it in a pill case or other container, there are plenty of ways to make sure your bar soap is ready for your next adventure.

By making a few simple preparations, you can enjoy the convenience and savings of traveling with bar soap. Plus, you’ll be reducing your environmental footprint with every trip.

The 9 Very Best Bar Soaps

Portrait of Arielle Avila

If you’re in the market for a body wash, consider the humble bar soap. While typically associated with handwashing, this skin-care category has come a long way in recent years. Plenty of bar-soap options are now just as effective — and much more sustainable — than their body-wash counterparts. Picking the right one for you and your skin’s needs can be overwhelming, so I asked dermatologists and skin-care experts and scoured our archives for the best options in a range of preferences. Use the links below to jump right to the type of bar soap you’re looking for, or read on to learn more about the criteria we considered as we assembled this list.

Best overall | Best moisturizing | Best for sensitive skin | Best for acne | Best exfoliating | Best gentle exfoliating | Best vegan | Best unscented vegan | Best less expensive vegan

What we’re looking for

Active ingredients: In our search for the best, we looked at everyday cleansing bars, exfoliating bars, acne-clearing bars, and more. Active ingredients will vary depending on the soap’s intended purpose, so we’ve made sure to note those ingredients here.

Scent: If you love a fragrant soap, we included a range of options with different scents. However, scented soaps tend to include ingredients that can irritate more sensitive skin, so we’ve included a range of unscented options in case your skin (or nose) is sensitive.

Price: Bar soaps are typically inexpensive, but depending on the ingredients and the brand’s manufacturing practices, they can run upwards of $10 to $15 for a bar. We’ve noted the size as well as the cost per ounce, so you can decide which product works best for your budget.

Best bar soap overall

Dove Beauty Bar, Original

Sodium lauroyl isethionate, lauric acid | Fresh scent | 2.6 oz. (approx. $0.05/oz.)

Dove Beauty Bar is the most affordable soap listed here but is still made with a mix of quality ingredients, which is why it’s our best-overall pick. Dermatologist Dr. Mary P. Lupo typically doesn’t recommend bar soaps because of the irritating and drying lathering agents found in most formulas. But Dove’s contains sodium lauroyl isethionate, a “particularly gentle lathering agent” that doesn’t penetrate or irritate the skin, and the soothing, antimicrobial ingredient lauric acid. Dermatologist Dr. Hadley King also likes that Dove is “free of harsh detergents, so it doesn’t strip the skin,” and it comes in lots of varieties (her personal favorite is the Gentle Exfoliating Bar because it’s both gentle and effective). Another longtime fan happens to be Kelly Ripa , who has been using it for over two decades. “Even if I’m staying in the most luxurious hotel that gives you all the fancy soaps and shampoos, I bring my own bar of Dove soap,” she says. “It just sets my mind right. It’s the best.”

Best moisturizing bar soap

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser Bar

Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides | Fragrance free | 4.5 oz. (approx. $1.40/oz.)

CeraVe, the maker of our favorite dry-skin products , has this cleansing bar soap that’s filled with moisturizing, restorative ingredients. It works for most skin types, but Dr. Debra Jaliman recommends it for dry, sensitive skin since it’s gentle and “extremely hydrating.” She specifically calls out the glycerin and the added ceramides. It’s also fragrance free, so you won’t have to worry about possible irritants.

Best bar soap for sensitive skin

Unscented Basis Sensitive Skin Bar Soap

Glycerin and petrolatum, aloe vera, chamomile | Fragrance free | 4 oz. (approx. $0.57/oz.)

While the aforementioned CeraVe bar soap likely won’t irritate normal skin, Basis has some added ingredients that may help with extra-sensitive skin. (In fact, it’s so gentle it was recommended as a mild bar soap for preventing and treating bacterial vaginosis .) Jaliman notes that it contains aloe vera, which is anti-inflammatory, and chamomile, which is soothing.

Best bar soap for acne

Panoxyl Bar Soap with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide | Fragrance free | 4 oz. (approx. $1.40/oz.)

Panoxyl first came on our radar when Strategist beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton wrote that its face wash was so effective that it cleared up cystic acne. The brand also makes a bar soap, which King recommends for anyone struggling with body acne. She says its formula “helps kill bacteria that contribute to acne while also supporting the skin barrier.” One note: Because it does have a higher percentage of benzoyl peroxide to fight off acne, you probably won’t want to use it as an everyday cleanser. Instead, reach for it whenever you have a breakout.

Best exfoliating soap

Soft Services Buffing Bar Microcrystal Exfoliant

Sodium palmate, magnesium oxide, glycerin, shea butter | Fragrance free | 4 oz. (approx. $3.50/oz.)

Alice Lin Glover, a co-founder of skin-care brand EADEM , uses Soft Services’ exfoliating soap bar a few times a week to “slough away any dead skin,” leaving her “supersmooth from the neck down.” The brand also sent me the Buffing Bar to test out earlier this year. As someone who has struggled with keratosis pilaris , I can firmly say it’s one of the best body exfoliators I’ve tried. After about three weeks of using the soap two to three times a week, I found the bumps on my legs significantly less noticeable.

Best gentle exfoliating soap

Kitsch Sugar Exfoliating Body Scrub Bar

Sugar, glycerin, coconut oil, walnut shell | Coconut and vanilla | 3.92 oz. (approx. $2.90/oz.)

If you’re after an exfoliating soap that’s gentler on the skin, Tower 28 founder Amy Liu recommends Kitsch’s body scrub bar, her go-to during the summer when she tends to show more skin. “The sugar and walnuts act as a super-gentle natural exfoliant, while the coconut oil gives my skin that extra moisture I need,” Lui says. Plus, the body bar has a nice coconut-and-vanilla scent that “smells like a dream.”

Best vegan bar soap

Nopalera Planta Futura Cactus Soap

Rice-bran oil, coconut oil, shea butter, other plant oils | Lemongrass | 4 oz. (approx. $3.50/oz.)

The two exfoliating bar soaps on our list are vegan, but if you’re looking for other vegan bar-soap options, we’ve included them here. To start, Ranavat founder Michelle Ranavat recommends Nopalera’s handmade soaps. “The soap has a fresh lemongrass scent and leaves my skin feeling super-nourished thanks to moisturizing ingredients like shea and cocoa butter,” she says, adding that its bright-green shade “gives my bathroom a little pop of color.” Also worth noting: The soap is palm-oil free, making it a more sustainable choice.

Best unscented vegan bar soap

Alder New York Cleansing Body Bar

Sea kelp, jojoba, glycolic acid | Fragrance free | 3.5 oz. (approx. $3.71/oz.)

Alder New York also makes a palm-oil-free vegan soap. However, its Cleansing Body Bar is unscented, making it a good option if you have sensitive skin (or a sensitive nose). The brand sent me one to try out for myself, and it left my skin feeling clean and hydrated. It contains one percent glycolic acid, so it lightly exfoliated my skin without irritating my eczema and was gentle enough for everyday use.

Best less expensive vegan bar soap

Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Bar Soap, Rose

Coconut oil, palm oil, jojoba oil | Rose | 5 oz. (approx. $1.16/oz.)

The previous two vegan bar soaps are on the pricier side, so we found a cheaper alternative from our archives. When we spoke to nutritionist Daphne Javitch about the things she can’t live without, she told us her favorite soap is from Dr. Bronner’s. The brand’s sustainable practices and cool packaging make it the “Patagonia of soap,” she said, adding that rose is her go-to scent for a shower. “Everyone loves the Dr. Bronner’s liquid, and I love it too, but I really love the bar soap,” she said. “I somehow find it less drying. Also with bar soap, so little goes a long way.”

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
