Meet your tour guide at 3:30 pm at the lobby for a guided walking tour in Bordeaux. After the tour we'll have a workshop, an introduction to the wines of Bordeaux. Here you’ll learn about the classification system of Bordeaux as we taste these exquisite wines and have dinner.

Day 2: Medoc: 3 Winery Visits, Lunch Awaken to the beauty of southwestern France and get ready for a full day of discovery. We’ll uncover the secrets of the world famous wines of the Bordeaux region by embarking on a one of a kind journey along the Routes des Chateaux, in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. The Routes is dotted with renowned vineyards and historic castles, and there is no other wine route anywhere that boasts as many legendary and famous vineyards. You’re sure to recognize the names of these prestigious Grand cru wines. We’ll visit 3 wine estates.

There’s no better way to experience the sheer beauty of this historic wine region than by enjoying a lunch while gazing out upon the vineyards which are the birthplace of these exquisite wines.

Upon retuning to Bordeaux, evening at leisure.

Day 3: St. Emilion village, Chateaux visits and tasting, Private vintage wine tasting This morning will find us journeying to Saint Emilion and Pomerol. Our first visit will be to a Premier Grand Cru Classé in St. Emilion. This property is located on the impressive limestone plateau of St. Emilion. Deep beneath the vines laid underground caves filled with bottles of what some consider being the very best Bordeaux wines. We’ll taste 3 of these exquisite wines. Next we’ll be on our way to visit one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux. This family owned property is still making wine, after 14 generations of vintners from the same family. Rare tulips and orchids dating back to Roman times can be found blooming naturally among the vines. You’ll surely be transported back in time when you look out upon the ancient grounds. A rare bottle of wine was found under the floor of the family’s private cellar. The wine dates back to 1750! We will be privy to a vertical tasting different vintages and to be hosted for lunch by the family.

After lunch we will visit the medieval village of St Emilion.

In the early evening we’ll enjoy a coveted and rare opportunity to sample the different vintages of Bordeaux wines.

Upon return to Bordeaux you have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 4: Graves, Sauternes Chateau Visits, Lunch Our fourth day is a full one as we begin with a trip south of the city where we’ll visit some of the top classified red and white estates in Graves and Sauternes. We’ll start with a private chateau in Graves where the hospitable owners welcome us, as dear friends, into their home. There we will get to know our friendly hosts and enjoy a wine tasting as well as lunch. This Graves chateau is rich in history and lore which the family will proudly share with their new friends.

You’ll find out how the soil, a gravelly variety, contributes to the distinctive flavors of the grapes, and ultimately the wine. The variety of wines produced here is wide-ranging; dry whites, soft reds, and Cerons, a sweet wine.

After lunch at the chateau we’ll visit a grand Sauternes chateau which is classified, yet still family-owned. Our visit will surely open a whole new world of white wines for you to discover. The wines of Sauternes are among the most palate-pleasant sweet wines in the world. Though highly desirable, Sauternes wines are relatively undiscovered. They will provide us with a sweet ending to our Bordeaux wine tasting tours.

Your evening will be free so that you may once again soak up Bordeaux at night. Discover more of what the city has to offer, enjoy a glass of wine with the locals, or simply take in the ambiance from your place in one of the city’s beloved squares.

Day 5 : The Coast of Bordeaux – Cap Ferret, Oyster Farm,  The sea is calling to us and today we answer as our travels take us to the Atlantic coast to discover the secluded seaside town of Cap Ferret. Characterized by the heady scent of pine trees and miles of soft sandy beach the biggest draw for locals and their guests would be the oysters. We’ll spend time at a family-run oyster farm where we’ll learn about the traditional French methods of oyster cultivation. We’ll enjoy a taste as we sample the freshest of oysters and sip a lovely white wine.

Upon return to Bordeaux evening at leisure.

You’re sure to return to your home with so many stories to tell, fond memories to reflect upon and discoveries made during your one-of-a-kind week in Bordeaux.

FAQ about Travel Insurance

You can fly to Bordeaux.

You can fly to Paris and take a train.

We provide a complimentary consulting with your pre or post travel plans.

PRE AND POST IDEAS

You can visit Paris for few days.

We highly recommend combining the tour to Bordeaux with a tour to Dordogne.

Walking pace is like walking around town.

Be ready to drink….. a lot of wine!

What should I wear?

Stay casual and comfortable. Mornings and evening are chilly but during the day it’s warm. Even in full summer, hot days can quickly turn into cool evenings. Be prepared with a light sweater during the summer months, and something a little heavier in spring and fall.

You won’t need to dress up anywhere you go. If you would like to try to blend in with the locals as much as possible, think “smart casual” or “preppy” for men, and “light and stylish” for women. Italians are very fashion conscious, but not formal.

In the summer months, you will most likely want to wear shorts. Make sure they have good pockets. However, always make sure you also have some long pants

Bring flat shoes, as you will be walking in medieval towns with cobblestone streets or farms with unpaved roads.

If you want to dress up for dinner, dress as if you are having dinner with friends.

How many bags can I bring?

We recommend bringing one medium suitcase and another small bag or trolley.

Please check our packing advice.

We advise you to pack light. We also recommend planning what you need based on each day of your travels.

You will need the extra space for souvenirs. You may not think about it now, but believe us; you’d want to take home that tasty olive oil, a bottle of wine that you can’t find at home, local specialties, or ceramics.

On that note, the best advice we can give you is “bubble wrap”. Bring bubble wrap with you. It’s cheaper and more convenient to bring it from the U.S and you will probably never leave home without it.

We highly recommend you use packing cubes for efficient packing and to keep things organized. You can search for videos on YouTube to learn more about it.

Do I need a passport?

Copy of passport

We strongly suggest that you to make a copy of your passport.

Should I bring my cell phone ?

It is a good idea to bring a cell phone. See our tips for communications while on a tour down below.

Do I need converters or transformers?

European power outlets run at 220 volts. You must buy a transformer to avoid shorting out and/or causing permanent damage to your devices. You will need it for cell phones, cameras, tablets, and other US-made electronics.

Tip: If your electronics can be powered by either 120 volt or 220-volt outlets (the device will usually have this listed in the technical specifications in a format like 120/240 volts, meaning the device can be powered from any power outlet around the globe), you will only need a plug adapter. Please note that a plug adapter is not a transformer, and using one with a device not capable of handling 240 volts will cause permanent damage and may even render the device unusable.

We find that a debit/credit card of a credit union bank has low rates for an ATM withdrawal or credit card charges. In addition to credit union banks, here is a list of cards that offer a low or no foreign transaction fee: Capital one no fee hassle card, Chase Sapphire preferred, Chase ink business card, United mileage plus, Barclays arrivals world, Amex platinum card, Capital one venture reward, bank Americard travel reward, Marriott, Southwest, Barclaycard arrival plus, United mileage plus, Citi Hilton honors.

It is also important to let the credit card company or your bank know what country you are traveling to and the exact date

Communications

It is recommended to have a cell phone with you, however, if you plan to bring your smart phone, make sure to turn off mobile data right before you board the plane. If the data is not turned off, your mobile provider may charge you hundreds of dollars for using their services outside the U.S. On certain phones, you may be able to disable data roaming (phones that support this feature will most likely have it turned off by default). This will automatically turn off data outside the U.S.

You may want to check with your cell phone provider what data/voice/ text they offer when you travel to Europe. Things are changing for the better. For example, if you have an unlimited plus plan with AT&T you can pay $10 a day and continue using your phone in Europe as if you were at home.

Best Bordeaux wine experiences

bordeaux food and wine tours

A family story

I was born and bred in the Bordeaux region, just minutes from the magnificent vineyards of Saint Emilion; I am as much a product of the area’s unique terroir as the local wines.

My grandfather spent his entire life in the wine and food business, my brother manages a chateau, and my cousin is a wine merchant; wine was always crucial to my life. After living in the U.S. and Central America for over a decade and working in the gourmet food business for companies such as Les Trois Petits Cochons (The Three Little Pigs), I was thrilled to return to my roots and the beauty and grace of Bordeaux. Since I returned in 2012, I have been trying to share my love of wine and create the best Bordeaux wine tour possible…

We could not be bigger fans of Laura and the rest of the team at Bordeaux with Elodie

We had such a wonderful experience on our wine tour with Bordeaux with Elodie. From the outset, our guide and coordinator, Laura, was communicative, warm, and helpful. She allowed us to completely customize our experience, and she provided so much help and expertise beyond the wine tour, giving us an amazing list of restaurants, wine bars, hotels, and more. On the day of our actual wine tour, Laura picked us up right on time in a clean and comfortable car, and safely drove us to St. Emilion for a day of tours. We were so impressed by her knowledge of all things wine, geography, history, and science. We truly learned so much from Laura, and we were further impressed by the amazing day she planned for us - knowledgeable guides at the wineries, a PERFECT picnic lunch, and a fun walking tour of the city. We could not be bigger fans of Laura and the rest of the team at Bordeaux with Elodie. Thank you so much for such a great day!

We have been on many wine tours in different parts of France, that one is the best.

Thank you Emilie our tour guide. She is very knowledgeable. This is our second time with Bordeaux with Elodie. We are planning to go again next year since the company offers many activities. This year we visited wineries in Saint Emilion. We have been on many wine tours in different parts of France, that one is the best. Very professional. Thank you Emilie we will see you next year.

My wife and I cannot recommend Bordeaux with Elodie highly enough!

My wife and I cannot recommend Bordeaux with Elodie and specifically our guide Solene highly enough! We have been to Napa Valley numerous times and feel very comfortable there planning things ourselves. We were not familiar with French wine or the how to navigate Bordeaux so I set out to find someone to help curate the trip. I came across Elodie’s company fairly quickly and was impressed with the level of detail they provided on their website. I reached out to them and we were not disappointed. Their communication was fantastic via email and they provided any detail we wanted in advance of booking with them. Once we booked they took the time to ask questions and learn what we were looking for to tailor the perfect 3 day trip. Our guide Solene was fantastic! She was able to provide us with knowledge that helped us learn about the region, the wineries, and French culture. Our hotel pickup each day was flawless and the Mercedes van very comfortable. We do not often use tours so we were a little hesitant prior to committing. We are so glad we did as we felt it was the best money we spent on our trip!

Bordeaux Travel Logistics

Getting to bordeaux, major airports in bordeaux.

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD): This is the principal airport serving Bordeaux and the surrounding areas in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Although it’s not the largest, its convenient location just 30 minutes from the city centre makes it the preferred choice for many travelers. Keep a lookout for current flight deals on Kayak for the best rates.

Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS): This is one of the largest airports in France with numerous international flight connections. Though it’s about a two-hour drive to Bordeaux, the extensive connections and shuttle services to Bordeaux make it a practical option.

Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE): Another option for entering the region, especially for those exploring the greater Bordeaux region. It’s around a three-hour drive to Bordeaux, but the airport offers a number of domestic and international flights.

Arriving from Other Parts of France

France’s high-speed train network, the TGV, makes travelling to Bordeaux from other parts of the country both swift and convenient. The Bordeaux Saint-Jean train station is a major hub that connects the city to other French cities such as Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. This connectivity, combined with the efficiency of the TGV, means you can be sipping Bordeaux’s famous wines just a few hours after leaving Paris.

Getting Around Bordeaux

Public transportation.

Trains: The train system in Bordeaux is well developed, providing reliable connections not only between major cities but also to smaller towns in the region. The trains generally run on time and provide an efficient and economical way to travel.

Buses: For some of the more remote areas or smaller villages, buses are the only available form of public transport. Though not always as punctual as the trains, buses offer routes to areas trains can’t reach.

Renting a car is a wonderful option if you’re keen to discover the picturesque countryside and visit vineyards at your leisure. Remember that non-EU citizens need an International Driving Permit along with their standard driver’s license to drive in France. Also, take note that many city centers in Bordeaux have restricted traffic zones, which are monitored by cameras. Unauthorized entry into these zones can result in fines.

Taxis and Rideshares

Taxis are easily accessible in cities and larger towns. Uber is also available in Bordeaux, providing an additional convenient option for navigating the city.

Other Things to Know

French is the official language. However, English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.

The Euro (€) is the official currency of France.

Bordeaux is generally safe for tourists, but as with any travel destination, always be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas.

Electricity

France operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. The power plugs and sockets are of type E.

Cities, Towns and Villages within Bordeaux

The region of Bordeaux, in the southwestern part of France, is famed worldwide for its premium wines and wine-making culture. However, aside from its prestigious vineyards and wine chateaux, Bordeaux is home to a diverse array of cities, towns, and villages, each one bursting with its own unique character, history, and attractions. This section delves into some of the must-visit places within the Bordeaux region, painting a vivid picture of the diverse experiences that await you in this enchanting wine capital of the world.

Bordeaux City

As the region’s capital, Bordeaux City is a harmonious blend of history, culture, and of course, wine. Its city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, brimming with Gothic cathedrals, grand mansions, and public squares lined with trendy boutiques and bistros. The city is also home to La Cité du Vin, a world-class wine museum that offers an immersive journey into the world of wine. With its central location and excellent transport links, Bordeaux City is a perfect starting point for day trips throughout the region.

Saint-Émilion

Saint-Émilion is a picturesque medieval village known for its eponymous world-class wines. The town’s monolithic church, carved from a limestone cliff, is a sight to behold, while its underground catacombs offer a unique glimpse into the town’s past. The village is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its historic vineyard landscape that has remained intact over the centuries.

The Médoc region, stretching north of Bordeaux City, is an esteemed wine-making area dotted with prestigious wine chateaux. It’s a wonderful place to explore, with lush vineyards, pine forests, and a long sandy coastline perfect for relaxing walks. The region is also famous for the annual Marathon du Médoc, a unique event combining wine tasting and long-distance running.

Pomerol, although one of the smallest wine regions in Bordeaux, is a powerful name in the world of wine, producing some of the world’s most sought-after vintages. This quiet, rural area is an idyllic place to escape from the hustle and bustle, and to appreciate the simpler things in life, like a good glass of wine amidst the beauty of nature.

Graves and Sauternes

South of Bordeaux City, the regions of Graves and Sauternes are known for their diverse wines, from crisp whites to sweet dessert wines. These areas boast a rich history, with Graves being the oldest wine region in Bordeaux, and Sauternes home to the prestigious Château d’Yquem.

Arcachon Bay

Although not a wine-producing area, Arcachon Bay is worth a visit for its beautiful coastline, oyster farms, and the Great Dune of Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe. In fact, you can even book a tour by the coast in Arcachon , that includes pairing oysters with Bordeaux wines. The seaside town of Arcachon, with its charming villas and lively markets, is a delightful destination for food lovers.

These towns and cities, each with their own charm and specialties, contribute to making Bordeaux not only a top wine destination but also a rich cultural experience. From vineyards and chateaux to historic cities and sandy beaches, the region truly has something to offer every type of #Winetraveler.

What are the best wine tasting experiences in Bordeaux?

Undoubtedly, Bordeaux offers some of the world’s finest wine tours and tastings, owing to its renowned status as one of the premier wine regions globally. The experiences that tend to be most appreciated by visitors greatly vary, depending on personal tastes, interests and of course, budget. For those who relish Merlot-based wines, a full-day tour of St. Emilion is highly recommended . This UNESCO-listed medieval town is celebrated for its rich winemaking tradition. #Winetravelers will not only explore renowned wineries and delve into the depths of underground cellars, but also embark on a guided tour of the historic town itself, steeping in its beauty and heritage. If Cabernet Sauvignon tantalizes your palate, a private tour of the iconic Médoc region would be ideal. Known for its impressive roster of prestigious chateaux such as Margaux and Mouton Rothschild, the Médoc region promises an unforgettable experience for wine enthusiasts. A typical tour here offers the opportunity to sample some of the region’s exceptional Grand Cru Classé wines. This particular tour allows you to be driven around in luxury fashion to some of Medoc’s most stunning estates. If the combination of urban exploration and wine tasting appeals to you, a Bordeaux City Wine Tour is an excellent choice, led by a local. It offers a unique blend of sightseeing within the city of Bordeaux, coupled with indulging in wine tasting at urban wine bars and establishments, a true treat for the senses. Each of these experiences offers its own unique view and taste of Bordeaux, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Pick the one that most aligns with your interests and preferences, and prepare for a memorable #Winetraveler experience.

Are there any good Bordeaux wine tours to avoid crowds?

Bordeaux, as one of the world’s most esteemed wine regions, can often draw large crowds. However, there are several delightful wine tasting experiences that allow you to avoid the throngs of visitors and enjoy a more intimate experience. Private wine tastings organized by local tour operators can be an excellent option to consider. We highly recommend this private and customizable wine tour offered by Bordeaux Classic Cars . Simply articulate your preferences to the guide and through his personal connections you can dodge crowds in a beautiful convertible and go wine tasting throughout Bordeaux. Many renowned estates in Bordeaux offer these personalized experiences that not only offer an exclusive and in-depth look into their wine-making process but also allow you to taste their finest wines in a serene, private setting. For truly secluded and unique wine experiences, consider booking visits to smaller, family-run estates, often found in lesser-known sub-regions of Bordeaux such as Fronsac, Cadillac, Sauternes, Saint-Croix-du-Mont and Canon-Fronsac. These smaller vineyards may not have the fame of the Grand Cru estates, but they offer high-quality wines and an opportunity to learn about winemaking from passionate, dedicated vignerons in a quiet and personal setting. Exploring Bordeaux’s satellite appellations such as Côtes de Bordeaux or Entre-Deux-Mers can also be a good strategy to avoid the crowds. These areas are lesser-known to the general tourist population but are highly respected by wine enthusiasts, and a visit to these regions can provide excellent, crowd-free tastings.

The best wine tours in Bordeaux

Best wine tours in Bordeaux

If you’re looking for amazing wine tours and wine-related experiences, Bordeaux is your city! This shouldn’t come as a surprise in a region that is considered by many as the world wine capital.

If you’re confused and don’t know what are the best wine tours to take in the Bordeaux wine region , I’m here to help. After years of traveling and trying different tours, guides, and winery visits I gathered a list of the best experiences the Bordeaux region has to offer. If you’re a wine lover or just interested in visiting several wineries on your trip to Bordeaux, keep reading as there’s a lot of important information here for you.

How to take a wine tour in Bordeaux

A semi-private wine tour to saint emilion or medoc, discovering wineries by bike – biking wine tours in bordeaux , group tours in the bordeaux wine region , private wine tours from bordeaux , self-guided tours in the wineries of bordeaux , wine activity in bordeaux .

If you have no problem planning your wine trip yourself and looking for winery recommendations , you can go ahead and skip to the Self-Guided Tours section of this article.

I want to start, however, by helping those who don’t want the hassle of organizing a wine tour. And even though, I personally like self-organized tours, there are a few big advantages to taking a guide.

First, you get a lot of knowledge about the history of the Bordeaux wine region and winemaking in Bordeaux. But also, it enables you to drink a lot of wine without worrying about driving back to Bordeaux.

The best wine tours in Bordeaux

Wine tours are probably the main attraction Bordeaux has to offer. So as you can imagine, there’s no shortage of guides and tour operators offering wine tours in the region. Some of them are very professional and knowledgeable and others less so. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re booking.

best wine tours in Bordeaux

There are several types of wine tours you can find in Bordeaux.

A private wine tour with a guide who takes you straight from the doorsteps of your hotel to visit several wineries in one day. A more popular option is the semi-private wine you, where a small group is going to visit 2-4 wineries in one or two wine regions in Bordeaux .

Then you have the big group tours with 10 to 50 participants. These are less recommended in my opinion but they are very well-priced. And lastly, you have more unique experiences that include food tasting, cycling, and more.

In this article, I summarized the best wine tours and experiences in each of these categories. All the tours on my list start in Bordeaux which is great for anyone staying in a hotel in the city center .

Semi-private tours are small group tours of 6-8 people. These tours feel quite intimate even though they are not private. They’re usually not too expensive, considering the fact that it saves you transportation costs. So all in all, that’s the tour I recommend taking if you’re not into self-guided tours.

take a semi private tour in Saint Emilion

There are quite a few companies offering private and semi-private tours from Bordeaux to Saint Emilion or Medoc. Here are a few I recommend.

A Saint Emilion wine tour

One of the best travel companies to offer wine tours to Saint Emilion is Ophorus. Their tours include guided visits to some of the best wineries from different classifications of Saint Emilion. They also take you on a tour of the village of Saint Emilion where you get to visit some of the main landmarks.

The first option is a full-day trip to Saint Emilion and its wineries. If you have time, I highly recommend taking that tour so you can properly explore this world-renowned wine region, which has so much to offer. This tour includes a visit to three wineries from 1ᵉʳ, 2ᵉʳ, and 3ᵉʳ Saint Emilion wine estates (different growth classifications). You can book the full-day tour here .

If you don’t have the time for a full-day trip, there is also the half-day wine tour option with a visit to a one-classified growth winery and the village itself. The company offers daily tours in the morning and the afternoon. You can book the tour here .

Medoc Full Day Wine Tour, from Bordeaux

One of the tours I highly enjoyed was the one offered by Ophorus , a reputable company in wine tourism in this region.

The full-day wine tour to Medoc includes a visit to three different wineries, all carefully chosen by their team. The tour allows you to visit wineries from different appellations in Medoc and observe the differences between the more prestigious chateaux and smaller family-owned properties. All the chateaux on the tours are either Grand Cru classé or Cru Bourgeois, so good wine is guaranteed.

There are two great options for guided tours to the Medoc – A full-day tour and a half-day tour. I really enjoyed the full day, but I think that half a day is enough to get a taste of the Medoc.

Saint-Émilion Food and Wine Tour

If you want a full-day trip to Saint Emilion I recommend taking the one offered by Olala Bordeaux. Their tour lasts about six hours and includes a visit to three châteaux in Saint Emilion as well as a fun picnic. Book it here .

From Bordeaux: Afternoon Saint-Emilion Wine Tasting Trip

If you want to start the morning in Bordeaux and get to Saint Emilion later in the day, this tour might be perfect for you. The afternoon wine tour offered by Bordovino includes a visit to two wineries and a tasting of four Saint Emilion wines.

As you get to visit one small family estate and a big Grand Cru winery, you have the chance to compare their wines and see the differences in their wine-making techniques. You’ll finish the day with an early evening tour of the medieval town.

You can book the tour here .

Cycling from one winery to another while enjoying the landscape of Saint Emilion’s lush vineyards is a beautiful experience you don’t want to miss. There are a few companies offering biking tours in Saint Emilion. Both companies I mention here offer only electric bike tours and that’s because Saint Emilion is a very hilly wine region which makes cycling hard.

E-bike wine tours in Bordeaux

Bordeaux: St-Emilion Vineyards e-Bike Tour with Wine & Lunch

This Saint Emilion full-day bike trip is offered by Bordovino. You start the day in Bordeaux and the company takes you to Saint Emilion where you’ll get the e-bikes.

You then get a bit of time to tour the beautiful medieval town before you head on your cycling journey. The unique part of the tour starts once you get out of the center of Saint Emilion. You’ll cycle on the beautiful chateaux route, passing by famous estates like Petrus or Château Cheval Blanc.

On this tour, you get to visit two Saint Emilion wineries and taste their wines. The visit to the first château also includes a light lunch in their garden. Their bike tours are offered only during the tourist season, starting in April.

Book your bike wine tour here .

Rustic Vines – e-bike tours

This is another recommended wine e-bike tour, offered by Rustic Vines, a company that specializes in biking tours. In this small tour, you get to visit two wineries and taste delicious local specialties during your lunch. You get a short walking tour of Saint Emilion at the end of the day and even have an extra wine tasting at a wine boutique.

Like in the previous tour I described, here too you start your tour in Bordeaux and the company takes you to Saint Emilion. If you’re already in Saint Emilion you can start straight from there, and get a reduced price.  Book your tour here .

While I highly recommend taking a semi-private wine tour, their prices range from 90 to 160 euros p/p. It’s not extremely expensive for a wine tour, however, it’s not an affordable price for a lot of travelers to the Bordeaux region.

That’s where the group wine tours come in handy.

group wine tours in the Bordeaux wine region

The Bordeaux tourism office offers tours to most wine appellations around Bordeaux, including the less-known ones. You can choose between a day trip to Saint Emilion with a visit to one winery and a wine tour to areas like Medoc, Blaye, Graves, and Sauternes where you get to visit two wine properties.

These tours are guided by professional guides who are generally quite charismatic 🙂 The main advantage of taking a group tour is the price which is usually under 50 euros p/p.

If you have the Bordeaux city pass , you get another discount of 15% – you can purchase the city pass here .

The downside of these group tours is the number of people allowed on a tour which can easily get to around 40.

Here’s the schedule of the group wine tours in Bordeaux:

Monday: Saint Emilion or Fronsac  Tuesday: Medoc Wednesday: Graves and Sauternes  Thursday: Bourg and Blaye Friday: Entre Deux Mers (the white wine region of Bordeaux) Saturday: Medoc Sunday: Saint Emilion or Fronsac

Some useful information:

  • All the tours start at the Tourist office of Bordeaux at 13:30 and last for five hours.
  • During the winter the tours are offered only on weekends
  • Kids under the age of 5yo cannot join their tours

You can book your tours directly on their website .

Another option is private wine tours from Bordeaux . These tend to be quite expensive as you hire a person to accompany you the whole day. But if you find the right guide, a private tour can be an unforgettable experience.

The best guides in this region are personally familiar with many wine markers and can take you to unique places.

Here are a few of my recommendations for private guides in Bordeaux.

If you’re looking for a tour in Saint Emilion, I highly recommend Nicolle from Sip . Her tour focuses on small independent producers in Saint Emilion. She also wrote a great book about Bordeaux wine which I highly recommend.

Nicolle from SIP wine private tours in the Bordeaux wine region

As she has been working as a wine guide for more than two decades she can organize tours to Medoc, Pessac Leognan, and other parts of the Bordeaux wine region. This is her Medoc private tour , for example.

If you’re interested in discovering the Sauternes world, I highly recommend Anne from Aquitaine travel guide .

wine and food tours in Gironde

If you’re looking for kid-friendly experiences, Anne is great at that too. Drop her an email with all your questions: [email protected]

Two other great English-speaking wine tour guides in the region are Malgorzata Balaban-Delcros and Marie Hallier ,who also offers amazing tours to Cognac.

In the last few years, I wrote many articles about visiting wineries in the Bordeaux wine region . So if you want to go on a self-organized tour, you can find all the info on this site.

Here are a few wineries that I recommend for English speakers: Château de Pressac in Saint Emilion, Château Pape Clément in Pessac Leognan, and Château du Taillan in Medoc.

If you’re planning on a wine road trip with several winery visits, I highly recommend renting a car. You can find good prices for rental cars in Bordeaux here . If you’ve already decided what chateaux you’re planning to visit and you just want a driver to take you there, you can find one here .

Finally, if you’re in Bordeaux for a very short stay and have absolutely no time for a wine tour you have a few other wine-related activities in the city.

Cité du Vin – visit the world’s biggest wine museum

La Cite du Vin is a unique cultural center, dedicated to the discovery of wine. Through its interactive exhibition, it offers a journey to both French and global wine history. Read about what to expect when visiting the museum in my article about my visit to the Cité du Vin . You can avoid the lines at the entrance by booking the tickets online – here .

The ticket to the museum is quite pricy but you can enter the museum for free with the Bordeaux CityPass . To enjoy the free entrance you must enter the museum before noon.

Bordeaux Small-Group Wine Tasting class

You can also take a morning wine-tasting class with a Professional sommelier guide. This is a two-hour workshop where you’ll learn about and taste wines from different wine regions in France.

Book the class here .

Wine tours with kids

Most wine tour providers in this region do not welcome kids on the tour, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the Bordeaux wine region with your kids. All you have to do is choose a château from my article about the most kids-friendly wineries in Bordeaux .

7 great bordeaux wine tours: find the best tastings and vineyards.

As a wine lover, the Bordeaux wine region is an absolute must-visit destination. Located in southwestern France, Bordeaux is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in the world. And the best way to really get an overview of the region, try lots of wine, and learn as much as possible is to go on one of the top Bordeaux wine tours.

bordeaux wine tours

When we went for the first time, we were worried we wouldn’t be able to get into the top wineries and we’d have a hard time navigating the language barrier. In many ways, we were right. It wasn’t easy booking tours on our own without help. But then we found Rue des Vignerons , a website that helps you easily locate and book winery visits and more.

Not only can you book your own tours through them, you can also book a full or half day group tour in either the Right Bank or Left Bank, making it even more easy to find the best wineries and have a nice time on your trip, without having to worry about details.

We’ve been on many tours in Bordeaux and have found each of these to be very rewarding, fun, and educational. I hope you’ll find one that you love just as much as we did.

Our Best Bordeaux Tips

There’s a lot to think about when you’re planning your trip to Bordeaux. Here are a few things we wish we’d known before we went.

  • It’s not easy to book wine appointments directly through wineries. It’s way easier to book through Rue des Vignerons. You can also easily cancel your booking if something comes up.
  • English is not spoken everywhere, so be prepared with some key French phrases.
  • It’s best to stay in the town of Bordeaux if you don’t have a car. It’s walking distance to everything and all of these tours can depart from there.
  • If you do have a car, you might want to stay in St. Emilion. It’s so cute and easy to get around.
  • We like St. Emilion more than Medoc for the experience because it’s cuter, more laidback, and easier to visit.
  • Look for wineries that offer dinner. We had better dining experiences out in the vineyards than in town.
  • If you want to try more wines, head to one of the wine bars in Bordeaux to sample more than you could ever try at the wineries.

Bordeaux Wine Tour Questions

How much does it cost to go wine tasting in bordeaux.

Bordeaux wine tours vary in cost, but many of them are not very expensive. The most expensive tours include tastings of a variety of high-end wines as well as food and occasionally even the chance to try your hand at making wine. But, for the most part, most wine tours in France cost around $100-$160 per person for a full 8-10 hour day. Of course, this will vary depending on what is included, if it’s a private wine tour, and so forth. For private wine tours, you can expect around $200-$300 per person.

When Should I Visit Bordeaux Wineries?

The best time to visit Bordeaux wineries is between August and October, with September being peak season. Mid to late August is perfect for seeing vineyards overflowing with grapes and have warm to hot weather, while September is when the grapes are at their best and harvesting season begins. By mid-October, much of the grapes are harvested for use during the off-season, but you’ll experience far milder temperatures which is perfect for those who don’t love the summer heat.

How Do you Get Around Bordeaux Wineries?

The wineries are located within a 50-mile radius of the city. The closest vineyards are located just outside the city center and are very easy to reach. Many tour companies offer transportation to these vineyards so you don’t have to worry about driving yourself or taking public transportation (especially helpful since public transport is limited). With pre-arranged tours, you can also easily choose an accommodation that is central to the city center or in a nearby village to maximize your time spent tasting wines and visiting wineries without having to worry about long travel times.

How Many Days is Enough for Bordeaux?

You should plan on spending between 4-7 days in Bordeaux, however, there is no definitive answer to this question, as it will depend on your interests and how much time you have available. If you are simply looking for a short visit to do some wine tasting at a few wineries, a couple of days should be sufficient. However, if you want to explore the vineyards or take an immersive wine-tasting tour, you may want to stay in Bordeaux for a week or longer.

Food and Wine Tours of Southwest France

Personalized tours.

We don't believe in "cookie-cutter" travel experiences and neither should you. Our aim is to provide the most personalized and unique experience possible, and we do that by limiting our tours to 8 people. Every tour we give is never the same because it is based on YOU. With the exception of a few must-try foods, the rest is built around what you're curious about tasting.

We offer food and wine tours in both Bordeaux and Biarritz. Each tour has a slightly different focus to emphasize the unique offerings of either historic Bordeaux or the rich diversity of the French Basque region. In Bordeaux, our Old Town tour offers a little bit of everything and includes charcuterie from one of our favorite butchers. The Chartrons tour is more cheese and wine focused while visiting the city's oldest bakery. Our Biarritz tour showcases the best of the Pays Basque and includes a visit to the town's lively market. Please read the tour descriptions for a detailed overview of what each offers.

If you're coming to Bordeaux or Biarritz but don't see your preferred dates on our calendar, feel free to send us an email to [email protected] about additional dates and availabilities.

Experiences

Basque Country in Biarritz

Basque Country in Biarritz

The French Basque region draws much of its culinary influence from the sea, mountains and nearby Spain. All of this is reflected in the area's local cheeses, hams, pastries, and even wine. We'll start with a tour of the lively town market before

Chartrons

Historically known as the wine district, Chartrons is a charming mix of riverfront quays, gothic churches, antique shops, and boutiques with a bohemian vibe. You'll discover pain gascon made in an oven that dates back to 1765, incredible cheeses

Old Town

With its magnificent medieval architecture and winding cobblestone streets, you'll stroll through Old Bordeaux while sampling some of the best the city has to offer. We'll start at a bakery whose "boulanger" comes from a long line of bakers dating

Why We're Different

You'll be sampling the best of French food with an incredibly knowledgeable guide. Did you know that a baguette is some of the worst bread in France and you should be asking for something else? Or that there are seasons for cheese? Would you like to have someone walk you through the regions of French wine? Our guides can do this because they are food professionals - former chefs, food writers, and wine experts - not a student who has memorized a script.

Through rigorous testing and vetting, we have selected only the highest quality shops to showcase some of the best France has to offer. Among our purveyors are the bread baker for many of France's Michelin star restaurants, a cheesemonger who ages her own cheese, and a wine bar that emphasizes biodynamic wines. These are artisans who put a lot of heart and thought into what they produce, and you’ll sample that dedication through their cheeses, pastries, bread, and charcuterie.

What to Expect

The tour is roughly divided into two halves. The first half takes you to the highest quality artisanal shops of the neighborhood. You are mostly standing or walking while sampling along the way. The second half is a sit down, blow out tasting accompanied with copious amounts of wine. Tours last approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. Tasting portions are very generous and double as a meal for most people. There is often food leftover, which you are welcome to take home with you.

Phenomenal! " This tour was the perfect balance of local treats, curated beautifully to highlight some of the best edibles I've enjoyed in Bordeaux and culinary information complete with some delightful historical stories. Definitely exceeded my expectation and I'm grateful I was able to experience this tour with Alex. He is very thoughtful in his approach to customize the tour to the interests and tastes of the group. Absolutely, phenomenal. " Rebecca W. , Sunnyvale, CA
Exquisite Food Tour in Bordeaux " We are so glad we took this tour. Our tour guide Diane was personable and knowledgeable, and we could tell she really wanted to make this tour memorable for us. This tour combined Diane's knowledge of food, (Diane is a former food writer) with her passion for the Bourdeaux region and the food shops that we visited offered a uniquely Bordeaux experience. By asking us about some of our favorite tastes and foods Diane curated a tour that left a lasting impression for us. The walk through the city was both picture perfect and leisurely. If you are looking for a way to experience the foods of Bordeaux and the city itself, with a guide who made you feel like a friend, please do yourself a favor and take the Bourdeaux in Bites tour. " Kevin E. , Canada
Do it - you won't regret it " When we visit a city for the first time, the first thing we look for now is a food and wine walking tour. It's a good way to get to orientate yourself in a new place, and to discover local food and wine places you'd never find otherwise, benefitting from the knowledge of the local guides. We've done similar tours in Florence and Verona and really enjoyed them, so we were very happy to find Bordeaux in Bites. The format of the tour is slightly different from other tours we've done but just as enjoyable, if not more so. In other tours, we've sampled produce in each venue and then moved on to the next one. With Bordeaux in Bites, we visited and collected produce from artisan stores before sampling it all at the final location, an amazing cheese shop, where the owner paired the cold cuts and cheeses we'd selected with wines and beers (we couldn't eat all of the produce at lunch and went away with a doggy bag containing enough for another lunch the next day). Highly recommended; you'll learn about the gastronimic history of the city and get to taste some amazing bread, wine, cold cuts, cheeses, not forgetting the canelé and coffee. Our guide was Diane, the founder of Bordeaux in Bites, and we had a great time. Thanks Diane! We will go back to Bordeaux again, and I wouldn't be surprised if we do the tour again - we really enjoyed it, and there were so many tempting things we didn't get to try first time... Pauillac harbor, Medoc, Gironde, France

The introduction to this article is the same provided in a companion article about right bank 2021 Bordeaux wines .

The year 2021 was a challenging vintage for Bordeaux, and generally produced wines of less consistency than those of 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Should Bordeaux wines from this vintage be regarded with less respect than those from other more reputed or ‘stellar’ years? Not at all. Three factors from the past fifty years—improved viticultural techniques in the field, improved thermodynamics of fermentation in cellars, and winemakers working in two hemispheres per year, hence doubling their experience—have resulted in more vintages now exhibiting better overall quality throughout the world, including in Bordeaux.

Generally, most 2021 wines improved slightly during the past two years.

When reading the reviews below, remember that wine ‘scores’ are subjective; it is best to discover any vintage yourself by tasting various bottles.

Srn member links, helen mirren pairs american cinematheque award with malartic-lagravière.

The Hollywood legend signed a special-edition magnum of Bordeaux benefiting Meals on Wheels while being honored in Los Angeles

  • Collin Dreizen

Where does wine meet Hollywood royalty? At the American Cinematheque Award ceremony! (And in some of our favorite movies and TV series .) On Feb. 16 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, Oscar-, Emmy- and Tony-winning performer Dame Helen Mirren became the 37th recipient of the award, which celebrates artistic accomplishments in motion pictures. Staying within tradition , the Barbie and F9 star autographed a special-edition magnum of Bordeaux during the event, which also honored producer-entrepreneur Kevin Goetz and his entertainment research-analytics company Screen Engine/ASI.

Specifically, Mirren signed a bottle of 2016 Château Malartic-Lagravière engraved with her name. As in past years , the Bonnie family (owners of Pessac-Léognan’s Château Malartic-Lagravière and Argentina’s Bodega Diamandes ) were wine sponsors for the festivities. Malartic estate co-owner Véronique Bonnie presented the magnum and brought the château’s 2019 white and 2013 red for guests to enjoy at the cocktail reception and gala dinner.

“Helen Mirren belongs to these iconic actresses that have had such a long career embracing so many complex yet different roles,” Bonnie told Wine Spectator via email, noting how impressively Mirren speaks French. “And as you know, the wines of Bordeaux have had strong ties to our English friends.”

The bottle will remain at the Malartic estate, where it will sit alongside magnums autographed by past American Cinematheque honorees, “to remind us that giving is an important part of our company and our culture,” Bonnie explained. Coinciding with the new addition, Malartic made a donation to Mirren’s preferred charitable organization, Meals on Wheels West .

“[Mirren’s husband,  Taylor Hackford ,] explained to us the amount of work and detail Helen puts in preparing every single one of her roles,” Bonnie recalled. “At Malartic, we are also constantly striving for quality and precision, paying attention to every detail and knowing that we do work [to] transmit the legacy of our estate and terroir .”

This is not the first time Malartic has had a red-wine carpet moment. Beyond its American Cinematheque appearances, the château was the wine sponsor for the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival. It also promoted Kenneth Brannagh ’s latest Hercule Poirot thriller, A Haunting in Venice , and its wine had an on-screen part in the preceding film, Death on the Nile , along with appearances in Taken II (written by vintner Robert Kamen ) and on Netflix series Emily in Paris .

“Wine and cinema have in common that they involve a large number of dedicated people working together for many months, each [person] crucial to the final success of the project, nothing being left to chance,” said Bonnie. “They allow people to live an emotional experience, creating moments shared and aimed at aging with us.”

Bordeaux Wine and Hollywood: Malartic-Lagravière at the American Cinematheque Awards

Helen Mirren is not the first American Cinematheque Award recipient to sign a bottle of Malartic-Lagravière Bordeaux. In 2022, Véronique Bonnie brought a magnum for actor, philanthropist and football club owner Ryan Reynolds to sign . In 2021, Scarlet Johansson left her autograph on an engraved bottle. And Mirren’s fellow F9 star Charlize Theron was the first honoree to sign a Malartic-Lagravière magnum back in 2019.

French winemakers block trucks coming from Spain during a demonstration by the tollbooth in Le Boulou, near the Spanish border

Problems facing the European wine industry – and some bottles to try

Inequality between regions, competition with cheaper imports, producers going into administration – just some of the problems affecting the production of wine on the Continent

Tesco Finest Saint-Chinian, Languedoc, France 2020 (£9, Tesco ) Convoys of protesting farmers have been one of the features of the year so far across Europe, with scenes of tractors blockading cities and motorways, and angry protestors setting fire to hay bales and battling with police from Brussels to Barcelona. Among other things, the Continent’s agricultural sector is in revolt over rising production costs, shrinking margins, cheap imports and a set of new EU rules aimed at helping the bloc meet its environmental targets, plus a range of country-specific issues, all of which, they say, are making farming unviable. That French winegrowers have been among the protestors might try the sympathy of some, given that, according to French Ministry of Agriculture statistics, their average annual income is €78,590 – one of the highest in French farming, and a good deal higher than the circa-€40,000 average French annual salary. As ever, the average doesn’t tell the full story, however, with great inequalities within and between regions, and with many growers in, for example, the Languedoc – home to Tesco’s hearty spicy Saint-Chinian red – earning considerably less than that.

Château Pey La Tour, Bordeaux, France 2021 (£8.99, Waitrose ) Southern French winegrowers have been at the forefront of sometimes violent protests since way before the current wave of demonstrations, with a militant group known as CRAV (Comité Regional d’Action Viticole) and its local branches (CAV), behind a string of direct actions over the past 40 years, which have ranged from stopping and sabotaging trucks bringing in cheaper wine from Spain (a particular bugbear) to destroying offices and tanks of wine at a wine importers to, in January, setting off an explosion at the offices of the regional government’s environment, development and housing department. But the desperation that has fuelled CRAV can be found all over la France viticole. That includes Bordeaux, where the presence of a top 10% of luxury goods (single bottles change hands for four-figure prices) sometimes obscures the reality that most of the region’s producers trade in much more everyday fare, such as the suave, ripe cassis-scented Chateau Pey La Tour. In recent years, some producers have struggled to compete with cheaper or better marketed rivals from around the world.

Cosme Palacio Vino de Laguardia Crianza, Rioja, Spain 2018 (£22 , Reserve Wines ) One of the ways the French government has attempted to helped winegrowers deal with unsold or under-priced wine, is to pay subsidies to uproot vines. Some €38m of French government money has been put towards a €57m plan to pull up as much as 10% of Bordeaux’s vineyards, for example. Similar issues are affecting Spain’s most important wine region, Rioja, where a vast oversupply has brought widespread hardship to local growers, with grape prices plunging and much of the 2023 harvest going unsold, and with the regional government investing in an emergency distillation of tens of millions of litres of wine into industrial ethanol. With one of the region’s biggest names, Marques de la Concordia, having gone into administration earlier this year, it’s no wonder some believe Rioja’s future will inevitably be focused on its higher-priced, higher-quality wines, such as Cosme Palacio’s gloriously complex Laguardia Crianza. However, as anyone in the Languedoc will tell them, that kind of transition, with its inevitable, enormous social cost, is somewhat easier said than done.
