Hotels where baseball fans can score cool perks, save some money

With baseball season in full swing, it’s time for fans to make their game-day plans. For those traveling to the game, that can require finding a hotel to serve as a home base.

After all, sports and travel go together like peanuts and Cracker Jack. According to an American Express survey conducted in early 2024 of people who travel at least once a year, 58% of respondents said they were interested in traveling for sporting events in 2024, with 67% of millennial and Generation Z respondents citing interest.

When it comes to lodging, the best hotels for baseball fans include memorabilia tied to local teams or views of the stadiums. Some offer discounts or promotions centered around the team’s performance. Here are five hotels that are a home run for baseball fans.

HILTON BALTIMORE INNER HARBOR — BALTIMORE ORIOLES

Located next toOriole Park at Camden Yards, this hotel makes it easy to get inside the ballpark. But you might not even need to buy a ticket to watch the game, as many of the hotel rooms overlook the stadium.

If you intend to watch from your room, request a higher floor for a better view.

HOTEL COMMONWEALTH — BOSTON RED SOX

Multiple rooms within Boston’s Hotel Commonwealth embody the spirit of baseball. For example, the Fenway Park Suite patio features original ballpark seats. Inside, there’s Red Sox memorabilia, including vintage baseball cards and the “6” from the Green Monster scoreboard.

The hotel also sells game packages, which include an overnight stay and game tickets. Depending on the package, you’ll get extras such as a signed baseball or a personalized message on the scoreboard during the game.

HYATT REGENCY SAN FRANCISCO — SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

The Hyatt Regency San Francisco embraces not just the Giants, but also all the city’s sports teams. Through the end of 2024, the hotel is running a promotion for free valet parking and a room upgrade. Plus, if a San Francisco home team wins, you’ll be treated to two complimentary drinks from the bar in the hotel’s iconic brutalist-style atrium.

LIVE! BY LOEWS – ST. LOUIS— ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Located across the street from Busch Stadium and in the heart of Ballpark Village, the Live! by Loews – St. Louis is not only convenient, but its particular location also holds serious Cardinals history. The 216-room hotel sits on the former site of Busch Stadium II, which operated until 2005.

TORONTO MARRIOTT CITY CENTRE HOTEL — TORONTO BLUE JAYS

Toronto Marriott City Centre Hotel, located within the Rogers Centre, offers a unique viewing experience for Blue Jays fans. Book one of the field-view guest rooms for floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the field and stadium.

You can also watch from the hotel’s restaurant, the Sportsnet Grill, which has giant windows overlooking the field, while the restaurant’s speakers stream the game’s audio. Baseball-inspired menu items include the 24-inch Slugger hot dog.

HOW TO SAVE ON HOTELS DURING BASEBALL SEASON

The hotel for your next baseball pilgrimage might cost more this year than in previous seasons. According to Hotel Monitor 2024, a forecast from American Express Global Business Travel, a post-pandemic return to in-person meetings and ongoing inflation have contributed to higher hotel prices.

Some baseball-centric cities are set to see especially notable price hikes, including Boston, where room rates will jump by 11.3% year over year, the Hotel Monitor report found.

If your schedule is flexible, travel later in the baseball season so you’re not competing with summer vacation crowds. Or, consider being flexible in terms of the day of the week. According to a 2023 analysis of MLB ticket sales by ticket reseller TicketCity, midweek games offer the best deals.

The report, which looked at ticket sales from 20,000 MLB games from 2014-2022, found that Saturday ticket prices are the most in-demand and the priciest, averaging $78.61. Meanwhile, Wednesday MLB games are the least expensive, averaging $56.19 per ticket. Lower ticket demand may translate to lower rates at nearby hotels catering to sports fans.

To save further, consider joining the hotel’s loyalty program (if they have one). These programs can offer an easy way to accrue points toward future stays and sometimes net discounted rates. Higher levels of hotel elite status can unlock room upgrades or free meals.

You might also roll the dice with prepaid room rates. Though typically nonrefundable, these rates can lock in lower prices.

METHODOLOGY

The American Express poll was conducted from Jan. 31 to Feb. 8, 2024, as part of The American Express Travel 2024 Global Travel Trends Report. Online interviews were conducted with 8,029 adults around the world who make at least $50,000 annually and typically travel at least once a year. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2-4 percentage points. Millennials and Generation Z are defined as respondents born between 1981 and 2012.

With a year till opening day 2025, will Knoxville's Smokies baseball stadium be ready?

A pril 5 will be a Kodak moment, as the Tennessee Smokies take the field for their final opening day in Sevier County before rebranding and moving to downtown Knoxville for the 2025 season.

Will the downtown Knoxville stadium be ready for opening day in April 2025?

Stadium construction is on track to wrap up in March 2025 and the team's lease in Kodak is set to expire March 15, Doug Kirchhofer, CEO of team owner and stadium developer Boyd Sports (working in partnership with GEM Community Development Group), told Knox News.

Much like the 2024 season, the 2025 schedule should begin in the first half of April for the Smokies, a Double-A affiliate for the Chicago Cubs.

That should give the team enough time to move to the downtown stadium, at which point the team would be renamed the Knoxville Smokies.

The team does not plan to return to the Sevier County stadium after the 2024 season ends, even if downtown construction gets behind schedule for unforeseen reasons.

Instead, Kirchhofer said, the team would most likely work with Major League Baseball and the Southern League to modify its schedule to delay the home opener in 2025.

He did not specify whether that would involve finding an alternative home field until the stadium is ready or playing "home" games on the road or some other option.

"We will have a lot more information and certainty regarding completion dates by September and will have six months to finish the plan and execute the move," he said via email. "We will be consulting with other teams who have made similar moves to develop our schedule. ... We are currently on schedule and have confidence about the completion date for the stadium."

What about apartments, condos planned at Smokies stadium?

The downtown stadium is taking shape just east of the Old City. Vertical construction is obvious, and the frame of the site illustrates the massive footprint the stadium will have.

That footprint includes two adjoining residential buildings − apartments at Yardley Flats and condos within the Beauford Delaney Building. Kirchhofer said the exterior construction of the residential buildings should be finished by opening day 2025 and that some tenants will be moved in then.

Reconnecting Knoxville, a new federally funded city project reimagining the way people get around on bike and foot, features two notable stadium-related developments: a greenway around the stadium site and a monument for the Knoxville Giants, a Negro Southern League baseball team in the 1920s and '30s.

If parking becomes a pain, where will cars go on Smokies game days?

Also as part of Reconnecting Knoxville, the city is planning to turn a parking lot beneath James White Parkway − between the stadium and Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria − into a park to complement the stadium and serve as a buffer between the stadium and downtown.

Known as the north and south Old City Lots, these lots have a combined 231 parking spaces.

No designated parking is planned for the downtown stadium. The team has maintained enough public parking exists, citing a study by S&ME showing 1,333 parking spaces available within a 0.25-mile radius of the Knoxville stadium site and 7,675 within a half-mile radius. Some are public, some are private and some are free.

That study was commissioned by the stadium's development team.

Knox News  visited Durham, North Carolina, in 2022,  partially to see how the city’s downtown minor league baseball stadium experiences parking. Stakeholders in the Durham stadium  suggested Knoxville’s approach could be a mistake.

“It just doesn’t happen the way you think,” Mike Birling, vice president of baseball operations for the Durham Bulls, told Knox News. “Traffic studies, all that – you just have to take those with a grain of salt because people aren’t going to do what you think they’re going to do.”

Tennessee Smokies owner Randy Boyd emphasized during a September 2022 episode of “The Scruffy Stuff” podcast by Knox News that the Old City is “a handful of little buildings in a sea of parking lot.”

“But because it’s not Walmart – because you can’t pull up right next to the front door – people don’t feel like that there’s a place to park,” Boyd said.

How the Smokies stadium just east of Old City is being paid for

Boyd is responsible for any cost overruns beyond the agreed-upon price established through the Sports Authority Board:

  • Local government bonds:  $65 million
  • State of Tennessee grant:  $13.5 million
  • Investment earnings on bonds and state grant:  $2.5 million
  • Payment from Knoxville Smokies owner Randy Boyd:  $13 million
  • Loan from Randy Boyd:  Up to $20 million to Knoxville's Community Development Board, transferred to Sports Authority for construction
  • Total:  $114 million

Sales taxes generated inside the stadium would go toward repaying the bond debt over 30 years, and government will be repaid $1 million each year by the Smokies to rent the publicly owned facility.

Money from payment in lieu of taxes, or PILOTs, related to  the two adjacent residential buildings  also will be used to repay the bond debt.

PILOTs transfer property to the city's Industrial Development Board, which then leases the property back to the owner in place of traditional tax payments.

This is separate from the tax increment financing district, or TIF, that would repay Boyd's $20 million loan − only after it pays for infrastructure improvements around the stadium.

This article originally appeared on Knoxville News Sentinel: With a year till opening day 2025, will Knoxville's Smokies baseball stadium be ready?

The shape of the under-construction downtown Knoxville baseball stadium becomes more and more obvious each day the project moves forward just east of the Old City. In addition to the $114 million stadium project, more development is expected to pop up around the facility to form a new downtown district.

Virginia School Board Member’s Jan. 6 Arrest Fractures Community

There are calls for Miles Adkins to resign. But some in Frederick County, Virginia, think the accused insurrectionist should stick to his guns.

Sitting at the head of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Virginia , is a city steeped in the history of the Civil War , known as the “shuttlecock of the Confederacy” because it changed hands so many times.

There is a new battle brewing there now: a bitter debate over whether a school board member charged for allegedly taking part in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol , among other infractions, should resign his seat.

At the center of this modern maelstrom is Miles Adkins, who was elected to the Frederick County board as an independent in 2021. Some residents see Adkins as a hard-working American patriot; others angrily denounce him and call for his ouster.

While Adkins has been a controversial figure since he took office, things really came to a head after he was arrested in late February for allegedly breaching the Capitol three years ago and swilling Coors Light and Fireball during the riot. At the March 19 meeting of the board, Marine Corps veteran Robert Patton stepped up to the podium and demanded Adkins step down.

“I feel that he has disgraced himself, his family, the citizens of Frederick County, and the country,” Patton said. “You can no longer be an effective leader of the school board when you display poor judgment and a lack of honor and integrity.”

Another speaker took Adkins’ side, urging him not to give in to “these Karens,” while another called him a “patriot” and told him not to resign.

“I don’t need to be here—I am a veteran,” Patton fumed in response, storming out of the meeting while yelling at his neighbor for calling the deadly insurrection a “peaceful protest.”

There was a familiar cadence to the meeting. Locals say that each time Adkins has been accused of stepping over a line—including two alcohol-related arrests and a controversial doctored image of board members with devil horns and Hitler mustaches—the same battle lines are drawn.

“I think to some he will be a folk hero,” fellow board member Ellen White told The Daily Beast. “To others, he has this problematic pattern, and he needs to go.”

Each time, Adkins has the same response: He will not voluntarily leave the school board before his term expires in 2025.

“If you ask me if I’m going to resign, come get me,” he said at the end of the fiery March 19 meeting. “You’re going to need a wrecking ball to get me out of here.”

Department of Justice

To hear Adkins tell it, he is “not a politician and never pretended to be a politician.” He fancies himself someone who “fixes things,” starting when he joined the Marine Corps after high school in Ohio. When he left the service in 2008, he worked in aviation and then became a contractor, a job that took him all over the East Coast.

In 2014, Adkins was in Florida when he was arrested for leaving the scene after hitting the back of another car on a highway. He pleaded no contest for the accident that caused no injuries and later told The Winchester Star he “straightened things out” and turned his life around.

When he ran for school board in 2021, the arrest and some vile, conspiracy-minded social media posts resurfaced.

“I can’t help but laugh when y’all elect a guy, TWICE, name[d] [Barack] Hussein Obama, and get mad when he supports Muslims,” said a 2015 post that Adkins shared on Facebook. In 2018, he shared a post that David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland massacre, was a liar. He defended that post to the Star but later apologized for some of his online comments in a Northern Virginia Daily interview .

During his campaign to represent the Shawnee District, his platform was against programs that might support critical race theory for the district of 14,000 students—even though critical race theory is not taught to children at that level. He defeated two opponents to win the seat with 45 percent of the vote .

Julie Coffelt, who has a son in middle school, told The Daily Beast she was an early supporter of Adkins, especially since she was worried about possible pandemic mask mandates in school.

“He is doing what he needs to be doing for the kids, that’s the whole reason he is on the board,” she said.

White, his fellow board member, said that while Adkins has “always been a pleasure to work with, despite his personal problems,” she believes he should resign to “focus on himself.”

She said she wasn’t too offended by the edited image that denigrated her and three other board members—the preview frame for a video of a school board meeting about a possible mask mandate that was created by parent Christie Scarborough.

“I think that Miles doesn’t put a lot of forethought into things, and that moment showed it,” White said. “While I wasn’t particularly offended, it is offensive to people of other communities. It was a political shot.”

Adkins told The Daily Beast that when he posted the video, Scarborough had not yet inserted the doctored image—but he didn’t take it down after it was updated and drew complaints because “people still have a right to see what’s up.”

The unflattering headlines continued with an April 2022 charge of public intoxication in Prince William County that resulted in him paying a $25 fine. He told The Daily Beast that the charge stemmed from a misunderstanding when he tried to call an Uber after a night out watching live music. In June 2023, Adkins was arrested for driving under the influence in another county; he later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

“Miles is a good friend, but Miles doesn’t do himself any favors,” John Braithwaite, a parent who believes Adkins has done a “terrific job,” told The Daily Beast. “I believe you have to divide what they do on their personal time and what they do when they are on the clock. I think everyone is pleased with the job he has done.”

“But the alcohol is an issue. It does pain me to say it,” he added. “That said, the dude’s been really beneficial to have as an advocate for children. I never felt, unlike other board members, that he was trying to make things political.”

Jodi Yeggy, who has two school-age children, told The Daily Beast that her complaint about Adkins isn’t political. “This is about right and wrong,” she said. “Sometimes we want to make it into a political fight, but at the end of the day, we have an elected leader who is making poor decisions.”

Scarborough, however, believes politics is behind the move to push out Adkins. “Right now, you have the Republican, Conservative, and Libertarian sides that are all in support of Miles. Then you have the Democrat, Liberal… side that considers him an insurrectionist and that he should resign or be in jail,” she said.

“You can guess which ones are the Karens.”

Prosecutors say this photo shows Miles Adkins helping a rioter enter through a broken window next to the Senate Wing door at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Adkins’ arrest last month for allegedly participating in the Capitol riots wasn’t a complete surprise. The online sleuthing group called the Sedition Hunters had identified him more than a year earlier, which led him to issue a statement in the local newspaper.

“At every turn, my political opponents have lobbed personal attack after personal attack at me—and every single one of those attacks have been motivated by their anger at the way I have voted,” the statement said. “This most recent attack has absolutely nothing to do with January 6th, and like the previous attacks, it has everything to do with trying to silence and intimidate me. Well, I have news for the smear merchants—these attacks will not work.”

The federal complaint says Adkins—wearing a black baseball cap emblazoned with the word “Chuck” and a backpack with two American flags—admitted he walked into the Capitol with a large group after watching former President Donald Trump’s speech.

Prosecutors say Adkins said there were no barriers when he arrived, but he did see people scuffling with police and heard what he believed were flash-bang detonations. He said “he had traveled to Washington, D.C., a few times prior to January 6, 2021, to act as an escort for persons associated with the Oath Keepers,” the complaint says.

“Adkins said that he communicated with an Oath Keeper on January 6, 2021, through the Signal cellular phone application,” the complaint says. Video and photos from inside the Capitol show Adkins walking around holding a “large, canned beverage” and then chanting, “Let’s go get a beer!” as he left.

He declined to comment on the “ongoing investigation” into his alleged role in the Capitol riots, telling The Daily Beast he didn’t want to put himself in a “weird situation or whatever” before insisting that “it’s a two-tiered justice system.”

The latest allegations against Adkins do not sit well with Yeggy, who said, “It’s pretty frustrating to have someone who is an elected official and a leader in our school board having this repeating, concerning behavior… He needs to go.”

Adkins’ supporters say he should not be punished for actions before he was elected.

“On January 6th, Mr. Adkins was not a school board member,” one resident said at the podium during the March 19 meeting to applause. “He’s just a private individual thinking the same thing that 133 million other Americans thought.”

Scarborough also spoke in Adkins’ defense, saying that his detractors can “go the legal route” if they want to drive him out. “And by the way,” she added, “When you’re done, gimme a call. Let’s go have a beer.”

The legal route is not simple. Under Virginia law, 500 registered voters in the district would need to sign a petition asking for a circuit court to remove Adkins from office. A judge could then remove him for “neglect of a clear, ministerial duty of the office, misuse of the office, or incompetence in the performance of the duties of the office,” and some criminal convictions.

In the absence of that, his critics are left with only one option: trying to shame him into going. So far, it’s not working.

“I got elected to do a job,” Adkins told The Daily Beast. “I didn’t get elected to make friends.”

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.
