India vs Australia Tests schedule gets major upgrade, CA picks Perth for Border-Gavaskar opener to give IND chin music

India tour of australia 2024-25 full schedule: the border-gavaskar trophy will begin on november 22 in perth..

India's tour of Australia 2024-25 will begin on November 22 with the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Perth Stadium in Perth, announced Cricket Australia on Tuesday. India, the only team to beat Australia in Australia in consecutive Test series, will start their tour Down Under in Perth for the first time. In the previous two occasions, the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was played at the Adelaide Oval.

India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 full schedule announced(ANI)

This time, Adelaide will host the second Test (December 6-10), which will be a Day-Night affair. The third Test is scheduled to begin on December 14 at the Gabba in Brisbane. There were no changes in the venues of the Boxing Day Test and the New Year's Test with the MCG in Melbourne and SCG in Sydney taking the honours.

The big gap between the first and second Test is kept because the BCCI reportedly wants to play a practice match with the pink ball to get the players accustomed to it before the Adelaide Test. Notably, India were bowled out for their all-time low score of 36 in the second innings of their last pink ball Test in Adelaide.

India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 full schedule

Why parth was chosen as the venue for the first test.

Australia have an impeccable record at the new Perth Stadium with a four-out-of-four win ratio. India and Australia had also featured in the debut of this venue back in December 2018 which the hosts won. That was the only Test that Australia had won during that four-match series as India beat them in Adelaide and Melbourne to clinch their maiden Test series victory on Australian soil.

During India's previous tour, which the visitors won (2-1) against all odds, Perth did not host a single Test.

CA's head of scheduling, Peter Roach said Perth and Brisbane are the two venues that the Australian team is most comfortable in. The bouncy pitches on offer at these two venues make it hard for the visiting sides. India, however, had beaten Australia at the Gabba during their last tour.

"The clear advice from our national team is that there is a preference to start series strongly at venues where they're really comfortable and Perth and Brisbane they believe are somewhat comparable in terms of the advantage they get out of that," Roach was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. "They're the hardest and bounciest pitches in Australia. They also believe that playing day-night Tests in Adelaide is a significant advantage and the stats there are pretty conclusive too.

"So they will look at this schedule and some will say Gabba first would have been better than Perth. Others will say Perth then Gabba. I think that gap has really closed in recent times and the way our players think about that, and having Adelaide as the day-night Test, they'll be really buoyed about that again. So we're really comfortable that this gives us a great opportunity to compete with a really strong Indian team."

A full house is expected at Perth when the Rohit Sharma-led India side packed with superstars like Virat Kohli, who played only one Test during the last Test, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant step on to the field, feels outgoing Western Australia Cricket CEO Christina Matthews.

"I would be looking at crowds of 30-35,000 on day one [for India]," Matthews told ESPNcricinfo. “Getting a space in the calendar is really important. Our preference is the last Test before Christmas. But if it's the first Test, as we've had [the past two years], if we know that's when it's going to be then it makes it easier for everybody to plan. If we can know if it's the first Test of every summer or the third Test every summer, that's the important thing.”

After the series opener at Perth on November 22, Adelaide Oval will host the Day-Night Test followed by the 3rd Test at the Gabba. The Boxing Day Test will be played at the MCG and the fifth and the final Test will be at the SCG.

India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy defence will begin from November 22, with the first Test of the 2023–24 series against Australia set to be played at the Perth Stadium in Perth, a Cricket Australia release on Tuesday confirmed.

Adelaide Oval will host the series’ only Day-Night Test starting 6th December, followed by the third Test at The Gabba, Brisbane, from December 14. Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the Boxing Day Test, and the fifth and final Test match of the five-match series will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.

The 2023–24 series will be the first since 1991–92 to feature five Test matches between the two teams. India have been dominant in Australia in recent years, winning back-to-back Test series on Australian soil – 2018–19 and 2020–21 (both by similar margins of 2-1). Add to that India’s victories over Australia at home, and that’s four straight Test series that India have won against Australia.

India vs Australia 2023–24 Test Series Full Schedule

22-26 November: Perth Stadium, Perth

6–10 December: Adelaide Oval, Adelaide (D/N)

14-18 December: The Gabba, Brisbane

26–30 December: MCG, Melbourne

3–7 January: SCG, Sydney

Earlier, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that this year’s series would be played across five Tests, adding that the step is in line with the board’s commitment to preserving the future of Test cricket.

“The BCCI remains steadfast in its dedication to preserving the rich heritage of Test Cricket, a format we hold in the highest esteem,” Shah said.

“Our ongoing collaboration with Cricket Australia in extending the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to five Tests underscores our collective commitment to nurturing and elevating Test cricket’s significance,” he added.

Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird said the extension reflects the shared vision of the two boards.

“This extension echoes our shared vision to amplify the essence of Test cricket and uphold its legacy. As India and Australia, come together, we anticipate an enthralling spectacle that will captivate fans worldwide with its intensity and excitement,” Baird said.

With Kohli skipping the recent home series against England for personal reasons, some believe the clock is also ticking on the 35-year-old’s IPL career — could 2024 be the iconic batsman’s final season?

This year’s event represents one of the best opportunities for Kohli to win the IPL. He is joined in the 2024 Bangalore squad by the formidable Aussie talents of Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, South African captain Faf du Plessis and fast-bowling Indian teammate Mohammed Siraj.

An IPL crown for Kohli would be a perfect final chapter to the career of one the greatest cricket players ever.

Royal Challengers Bangalore's Virat Kohli tosses the ball after taking the catch of Lucknow Super Giants' Ayush Badoni.

2. Will Mitchell Starc live up to that record contract?

Aussie quick Mitchell Starc made headlines last December when he obliterated the IPL auction record , becoming the most expensive player purchase of all time at $2.98m.

Starc, 34, was auctioned off to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the centrepiece of their 2024 IPL season campaign. The left-arm paceman averages an impressive 23 for his bowling career in T20s with 74 wickets in 60 T20 internationals.

But the left-arm paceman last played in the IPL in 2015 and has a long, injury-riddled history with the competition.

He missed the tournament in 2016 because of a foot fracture. In 2018, Starc signed for the Kolkata for big money – but was injured again and never played for the team. In 2022, he also pulled out, citing “[COVID-19] bubble fatigue”.

In 2024, Kolkata will be hoping that Starc can deliver them their first IPL title in 10 years. If the big Australian stays healthy, few bowlers in world cricket can statistically impact a contest more than Starc.

Australia's Mitchell Starc bowls a delivery during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final match between Australia and India in 2023.

3. Why is the Indian election delaying the full schedule launch of IPL 2024?

The nearly two-month-long tournament will begin on Friday, March 22. Last month, organisers only announced a partial schedule for the first 21 fixtures until April 7 as the dates of India’s upcoming general election had not been announced at the time.

Issues related to the management, adequate policing and security of the tournament whilst the country goes to polls are understood to be behind the curtailed schedule announcement.

The  election schedule was announced last week, with the polls running from April 19 to June 4, and IPL organisers are expected to release the dates of the remaining fixtures in the next few days.

After the election, it is expected that organisers will have to play catch-up on the IPL tournament schedule with possible three-a-day matches slated on some days.

It is anticipated the IPL will finish in late May, which places it very close to the adjacent ICC T20 World Cup that begins on 1 June in the USA and West Indies.

A police officer briefs colleagues on the eve of the first Twenty20 cricket match between India and Australia, in Mohali, India in 2022.

4. Can 42-year-old MS Dhoni defy Father Time (again) to deliver Chennai a repeat title?

No player has the Midas touch at the IPL quite like MS Dhoni.

The evergreen Indian wicketkeeper-batsman has won the tournament a record five times in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Rumours are circulating that the 2024 IPL will be his final go-around in the lucrative competition — but we have heard those rumours before. Incredibly, Dhoni has not played a single professional game since the Super Kings defeated the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final 10 months ago.

If Dhoni is to bring Chennai another title this year, he will certainly have a strong arsenal of players to do it: Ravindra Jadeja, Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali headline an impressively credentialed Super Kings outfit.

If Dhoni does clinch a sixth IPL title, it will add to the already remarkable legacy of a player who has experienced an unprecedented second cricketing career peak as an IPL winner, to go along with his hugely successful Indian international career that ended in 2017.

If this is indeed his career farewell, Dhoni —one of India’s all-time favourite cricketers — can expect incredible support throughout the country during the IPL.

India are the current holders of the border gavaskar trophy having won the previous series on home soil in 2023 by a 2-1 margin..

Perth is considered one of the fastest venues in the world and Team India have historically struggled over there. The Indian team has played a total of four red-ball games against the Aussies in Perth and has only managed a single win and suffered four losses.

The solitary win in Perth came during India's 2008 tour of Australia which was marred by controversies including the Monkeygate. The five-match Test tour also includes a pink ball Test which will be organised at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide from December 6 onwards.

The third Test will see both teams travel to The Gabba in Brisbane. Notably, India have fond memories of the venue as they had defeated the Aussies in Brisbane during their previous outing. The last two Tests will be contested at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the Sydney Cricket Ground.

India's 2024-25 Test tour of Australia

Notably, the Indian women's team will also be in Australia at the same time to feature in a three-match ODI series against the Australian team. The first two games of the series will be played at the Allan Border Field whereas the third ODI will be organised at the WACA in Perth.

India women's ODI tour of Australia

The Australian men's team will compete in a limited-overs international series against Pakistan at home before the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Pakistan's tour of Australia will kick off with a three-match ODI series and will culminate with a three-match T20I series.

This beat the £1.9 million spent on Aussie teammate Pat Cummins and the £1.18 million spent on Sam Curran in the 2023 auction.

England batter Phil Salt was initially unsold at the auction. However, he has come in to replace Jason Roy, who is amongst a host of England players to withdraw. These include the big-hitting Harry Brook. Aussie batter Steve Smith was also not picked up by any team

What is the highest score in IPL ever made?

We're used to big shots in IPL. The highest-ever score for a team in one innings is a stunning 263/5 from 20 over by Royal Challengers Bangalore. They achieved that when playing Pune Warriors India back in 2013. Lucknow Super Giants fell just short of breaking the record that same year, scoring 257/5 against Punjab Kings.

West Indian batter Chris Gayle holds the individual record. He blasted a ridiculous 175 not out from 66 deliveries in the above game when playing for RCB. Current England coach Brendon McCullum is next on the list. He put his "Bazball" philosophy into practice in 2008 when he hit 158 not out from 73 balls playing for Kolkata Knight Riders.
