8 US Zoos With Red Pandas to Add to Your List

' src=

Red pandas have recently been back in the spotlight, thanks to the Pixar film Turning Red .

If your child (or your inner child, who are we kidding?) has been bugging you, wanting to go to a zoo to see a real, live red panda, you’re in the right place.

Today, we look at the best zoos with red pandas in the US.

Quick Facts on Red Pandas

Before we dive into the list, though, let’s learn a bit about red pandas.

Red pandas are the only “true” pandas; giant pandas are really bears, and red pandas are classified under their own family.

Quick facts on Red Pandas

They are native to the Eastern Himalayas, living in places like Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, India, and China.

Due to threats such as deforestation and poaching for their fur and the pet trade, their numbers in the wild have dwindled to around 2,500.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the red panda as Endangered.

So why are red pandas in zoos?

Zoos and research facilities that care for animals like red pandas contribute to conservation work in big ways.

At times, it seems that zoos exist merely for human entertainment, but that’s only partly true.

Caring for animals in certified zoos and managed habitats help keep a percentage of their population safe, healthy, and hopefully able to breed and increase their population.

Showing them to the public educates them about endangered animals and promotes awareness of conservation efforts so that people know what they can do to take care of the environment to prevent the extinction of these animals.

The income they get goes to the upkeep of the animals and funds research to better understand their behavior, reproduction, communication, and ecology to help the conservationists who do the groundwork understand what they need to thrive in the wild.

So let’s go through the list so you can choose which zoos to visit!

Before You Go: Reminders on Red Panda Encounters

I’m sure you’re excited to go to one of these zoos to see red pandas.

You’re probably willing to spend a little more to get close to these furry mammals.

So before you go, here are some tips so you and your family/travel group can enjoy your close encounters with red pandas:

Wear masks. Some of the zoos I listed above are mask-optional, but I highly recommend wearing high-quality masks even in mask-optional zoos. It protects everyone —not just you but the zookeepers and the red pandas, too—from Covid and other airborne viruses like the flu.

Wear gloves. If there’s a chance that you might be touching the red pandas or even going close enough to their mouths, protect yourself by wearing disposable gloves. Chattanooga Zoo, in particular, provides gloves to guests who sign up for encounters, and you might have to bring your own if you’re planning to go to other zoos.

Wear long pants, socks, and closed shoes. You might be going in the summer, and you might be hot, but red pandas are known to scratch or bite strangers. This is very rare and their caretakers do take every precaution, but it’s better safe than sorry.

Don’t force them to interact. As far as they’re concerned, you’re an intruder in their space. Keep a respectful distance until they’re ready to come closer.

Be careful about posting photos online. The last thing you want is to contribute to the illegal demand for red pandas as pets, leading to more poaching and fewer of them in the wild.

It’s better to post photos of red pandas up close or interacting with their actual caretakers than to post photos of you feeding or touching them.

Red Panda Tour in Nepal

Red Panda Tour in Nepal, itinerary focuses on Dobate Village of Ilam district for seeing the lesser panda. Red Panda s are skilful climbers that spend most of their time in the trees curled up with their long, bushy tails wrapped around their heads. Their thick reddish-brown fur offers additional protection from the cold, often harsh, mountain weather. We’ll give you a guide while you’re on this itinerary. You can also experience the day-to-day activities of the typical rural village in the Ilam district of Nepal.

Red Panda Habitat

Living in 36 different mountain districts, there are around 1000 red pandas in Nepal. It is one of the most endangered species in the country as well as the whole world. The majority of the red pandas of Nepal are protected inside the national park. Also, there are some communities of red pandas in Eastern Nepal in the districts like Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung where there are not any national parks or wildlife reserves yet is home to one-fourth of pandas. There are some non-profit organizations that are working to save the pandas of this region.

The Red Panda Community and Red Panda Network are organisations that are working since 2007 to spread awareness among local people and actions to protect the various endangered species through their habitat management, sustainable livelihood, and awareness building.

Red Panda Behavior

The family life of this attractive animal is obscure. A weak unearthly whistling or squeaking note is given out when it is disturbed or separated from its mate. This resembles the chirping of a bird. The whistling and chirping sound thus may be a means of communication. The courtship mating behavior of this animal resembles that of cats. It has been observed that stress and excitement give out a strong odor produced from the anal scent glands. The odor may be the means of defense and sexual attraction. The panda in captivity rubs the glandular area of the anal gland against a rough surface over which it moves living a scent trail that might well serve as a single to another individual.

What RPN ecotrip participants are saying...

What stood out most for me on this ecotour (besides seeing the red panda) were the leaders. Ramesh and Gyajo were both so amazing, so knowledgeable, so kind, and completely spoiled us. I've never been treated so well on a group tour. The dedication of the RPN trackers and the work they put in to find us a panda was astonishing, and I'm so grateful for them. This was an off year where the pandas' normal fruiting trees were not fruiting, so they had to work extra hard to track one down for us. And when we finally saw it, there were tears in a number of eyes. Not only did we see a panda, we also got to see some of the most beautiful parts of Nepal. The most beautiful places I have ever been, truthfully. This trip wasn't easy, but it paid off a hundredfold in the end. Thank you RPN for doing such great work for the people, wildlife, and habitat of Nepal.

ecotripper-melissa-theume-round.png

It was just as exciting to see our first red panda as our eighth! The forest guardians’ passion for red pandas and their habitat gives me hope that all RPN is doing to conserve red pandas is helping.

If you’re thinking about going on ecotrip, JUST DO IT. It is an experience I will never forget, and something so hard to explain. Being fully immersed in Nepali culture, seeing first hand how RPN has changed the lives of locals, experiencing views you’ll never see anywhere else, and making lifelong new friends were just a few of the things I’ll cherish forever (on top of seeing Red Pandas, of course!).

As you consider embarking on this journey, here are a few additional tips and insights to ensure your trek is not only enjoyable but also contributes positively to the conservation efforts and the well-being of local communities.

Red Panda Nepal 1

Physical Preparation: The trek can be demanding, with days spent walking in potentially challenging terrain. Begin a physical conditioning program several months in advance to ensure you’re in good shape.

Gear and Supplies: Invest in good quality trekking gear, including hiking boots, a comfortable backpack, and appropriate clothing for varying temperatures. Also, consider bringing along a good quality camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.

Leave No Trace: Be mindful of your environmental impact. Carry out all your trash, use biodegradable products, and respect the natural habitat of wildlife.

Water Conservation: Use water sparingly, especially in remote areas where resources are limited. Consider using water purification tablets or a water filter instead of buying bottled water.

Cultural Sensitivity: Take the time to learn about the customs and traditions of the local communities you’ll be visiting. Dress modestly, ask permission before taking photos, and show respect to local customs.

Support Local Economies: Purchasing local crafts, dining in local eateries, and using local guides not only enhances your travel experience but also helps sustain the community economically.

Keep a Safe Distance: Always maintain a respectful distance from the wildlife. Use zoom lenses for photography instead of approaching too closely.

Quiet Observation: Avoid making loud noises that could disturb the animals. The quieter you are, the more likely you are to witness the natural behavior of wildlife.

Partnering with a reputable trekking company like RP Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. ensures that you have knowledgeable guides who are committed to responsible tourism practices. They can significantly enhance your experience by providing insights into the local culture, flora, and fauna, ensuring that you have a safe and rewarding trek.

Support Conservation Initiatives: Consider making a donation to conservation organizations working in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Your contribution can help fund critical conservation efforts, including habitat restoration and anti-poaching measures.

Keep a journal or blog of your experiences. Documenting your trek can not only serve as a personal memento but also inspire others to undertake responsible and sustainable travel.

The Red Panda Trail Trek is more than just a trekking adventure; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature, engage with local cultures, and contribute to the preservation of one of the planet’s most precious ecosystems. By embarking on this journey with mindfulness and respect, you can ensure that this enchanting trail remains a haven for the extraordinary wildlife and communities that call it home.

Red Panda Tour

Red Panda in tree

Red Panda tour is especially crafted itinerary for those who are interested in seeking Red Pandas in their natural habitats and rare birds of foothills of eastern Nepal. Only one species of Red Panda Ailurus fulgens fulgens is found in Nepal, northeastern India (West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh), Bhutan, and part of China.

Red pandas only live in temperate forests in the foothills of the Himalayas. The temperature in this region is generally cool, and there is little annual variation. The southern slopes of the mountains trap the water from seasonal monsoons, supporting forests of firs, deciduous hardwoods, and rhododendrons. A bamboo understory grows in these forests and provides the bulk of the red panda’s diet. However, these swaths of bamboo are only found in narrow bands throughout the red panda’s range. Thus, although red pandas are distributed across thousands of miles of territory, they are restricted to these small, fragile areas because of their dependence on the bamboo plants. These habitats are also best habitats for restricted range species of birds in Nepal.

This tour is led by one of the Nepal’s best naturalists and pandas are searched by local experts.

  • Introduction
  • Dates & Prices

Only two thousand five hundred Red Panda survive in the wilds of India and SW China. It is one of the most exotic species surviving the in Eastern Himalayas. It is distantly related to the Giant Panda but is closer to weasel and skunks belonging to superfamily Musteloidea. It belongs to family Ailuridea and genus Ailurus the species found in India belongs to race fulgens. The long bushy tail with ochre rings and body covered in reddish brown fur makes it an attractive mammal to watch in the dense canopy of temperate Himalayan forests. The tour is aimed to accord an exciting sighting of the Red Panda in the Singalila National Park near Darjeeling district of West Bengal in India.

India & Nepal - Red Pandas, Satyr Tragopans and Tigers

A 12-day holiday to Singalila National Park, a protected area of Himalayan forest straddling India and eastern Nepal, in search of the elusive Red Panda, as well as an exciting variety of other mammals and birds.

Quick Enquiry

Quick enquiry.

The stunningly handsome Red Panda is widely regarded as one of the most attractive of all mammals, achieving a level of esteem even greater than that given to its larger relative, the more familiar black and white Giant Panda. Although not uncommon in captivity, the Red Panda is an extremely difficult animal to see in the wild with a tiny world population living an unobtrusive, and mostly unobserved existence in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayas. This tour will provide participants with a realistic opportunity to finally become familiar with this most endearing creature in the remote and picturesque Singalila National Park, a protected area of Himalayan forest straddling the border between West Bengal in India and Nepal. Within this reserve, a small population of Red Pandas is closely monitored by a team of conservationists and we shall be enlisting their local assistance to track and observe the Pandas at dawn and dusk as they forage for the roots and shoots which form much of their diet. We may also be fortunate to telescope a Panda during the day as it slumbers among the foliage high in a tree. Each daily excursion will be made from a comfortable base in a spectacularly situated guesthouse which affords views across seemingly endless ranges of forested hills. Although our principal focus will be on finding Pandas, we are likely to encounter other mammals such as Yellow-throated Marten and a wonderful variety of Himalayan birds occur in the reserve including Satyr Tragopan, Kalij Pheasant and the jewel-like Fire-tailed Myzornis. The journey to this isolated reserve will take us through Darjeeling where views can be obtained (weather permitting) of the highest peaks in the Eastern Himalayas, and rather more reliably, we can sample the famous local tea!  At the conclusion of the tour, we return to Delhi for a homeward flight but if desired an extension can easily be arranged to Ranthambore Reserve, a paradise for wildlife in Rajasthan where we might round off the Red Panda experience with a Tiger sighting.

  • Realistic opportunities to see the elusive Red Panda amid pristine Himalayan forests
  • 7-night accommodation in a guesthouse overlooking wonderful montane scenery
  • Chances to see Yellow-throated Marten and Barking Deer among other local mammals
  • A Reserve list of over 300 birds includes such sought-after species as Satyr Tragopan, Brown and Black-throated Parrotbills, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Fire-tailed Myzornis and Black-faced Laughing Thrush
  • Remote tranquillity in a little visited area of mountains and forests
  • Overnight in Darjeeling famed for its tea plantations and scenic views
  • Weather conditions permitting, superb views of the Himalayas from the domestic flights
  • Overnight in Delhi with the chance for some local sightseeing
  • Opportunity to extend holiday by visiting Ranthambore Reserve renowned for the diversity of its wildlife

A small population of one of the world’s most endearing and endangered mammals, the Red Panda, lives in the high remote forests of Singalila National Park. The reserve lies in the foothills of the Himalaya, mainly within the Indian state of West Bengal close to the town of Darjeeling, with Sikkim and the towering peak of Kanchenjunga — the world’s third highest mountain — to the north. To the south and east, Singalila crosses the border into Nepal’s Ilam district and also protects a small area of the remote Tinchule Forest. There are less than 10,000 Red Pandas left worldwide and seeing one can never be guaranteed. However, by teaming up with a dedicated group of ‘Red Panda Guardians’ (employed by the Red Panda Network, a US-based conservation NGO), along with other experienced guides and trackers, we believe we have a very high chance of success! Singalila National Park is part of the eastern Himalaya and encompasses the Singalila Ridge, which is covered by dense bamboo, rhododendron, oak and magnolia forest at an altitude of between 2,000 and 3,600 metres. The park’s mixed deciduous and conifer forest, old trees and dense understorey of bamboo provides an ideal habitat for Red Pandas as well as other mammals such as Yellow-throated Marten and Barking Deer. The park is also home to over 300 species of bird including Blood and Kalij Pheasants, Satyr Tragopan, Brown and Fulvous Parrotbills, Rufous-vented Tit, Fire-tailed Myzornis and Golden-breasted Fulvetta, plus an exciting variety of other rosefinchs, bullfinches, wren-babblers, laughingthrushes, nuthatches and minivets! Our base for seven nights is Habre’s Nest Homestay, a rustic, but clean and comfortable guesthouse situated on the park’s border with India and Nepal, at an altitude of 2,900 metres. Set amongst stunning views (its four twin-bedded rooms feature en suite facilities and balconies), the homestay makes an ideal base for our daily excursions into the park. Singalila’s small resident population of Red Pandas is protected by a team of Red Panda Guardians. Tashi, co-owner of our homestay, is one such guardian, and he generously donates 20% of Habre’s Nest’s income to Red Panda conservation. We will set out each day on foot with our dedicated team of trackers (three of whom are also Red Panda Guardians) in search of this endearing mammal, entering the park through the Indian side, but covering key sites in both the Indian and Nepalese sections. Whether or not we come across one of these secretive and delightful mammals — which are largely arboreal and crepuscular in their habits — Singalila National Park has so much more to offer. The beauty of our surroundings, the lack of other visitors and the reserve’s varied birds, mammals and other wildlife will all ensure a memorable stay.

Plastic bags, cotton bags or pillowcases are useful to protect our camera equipment from dust and sand. A small daypack/camera bag is essential for carrying excess clothing, camera equipment and a water bottle.

Protect your travel booking - We recommend travel protection insurance. Between missed connections, lost or delayed luggage, or medical emergencies, you want some peace of mind that your travel investment is well protected. No matter who you buy from, please consider purchasing a travel protection plan before you travel.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
