The highlight, undoubtedly, was the moment we approached the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct – a sight so deeply ingrained in the collective imagination of Harry Potter fans. However, if you only have one day in the Highlands , I recommend the day excursions from either Inverness or Edinburgh as I’ve undertaken these tours and find these are reliable in their offerings.

Whichever of the tour options recommended here you select, these escorted tours include other destinations also which makes it really worthwhile. This day trip offers plenty of photo opportunities. You’ll make a photo-stop at Urquhart Castle (ruins) and Commando Memorial before heading to Fort William where you’ll embark on your timeless journey aboard the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig. You’ll have time to view and photograph the Glenfinnan Viaduct before making your return journey where a stop at Fort Augustus is on the itinerary. The final stop on the Jacobite Steam Train tours day trip from Inverness is at Dores Beach where you’ll watch a mesmerising sunset.

PRO TIP: On your journey to Mallaig from Fort William, sit on the left-hand side of the train in the direction of the train. In this way, you get a better view of the lochs as you pass them, and an incredible view of the ‘curve’ of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. If you want to see most of the ‘curve’ sit towards the back of the train and choose a seat that aligns by a window bay.

While I enjoyed the camaraderie among passengers, aboard the Jacobite Steam Train tours which I undertook, where some even doned on a Hogwarts robe, there is no specific dress code requirement for the train. However, it’s wise to consider the weather on the day and dress appropriately with a good pair of walking shoes so you are comfortable.

Can you Bring Your Own Food on the Jacobite Steam Train?

Depending on the class of service you opt for, the first class usually comes with complimentary beverages and a light snack.

First Class passengers may receive complimentary tea or coffee and can pre-order an afternoon tea box​​​​.

For the standard class travellers, no beverages or snacks are included but the train offers a buffet car for purchasing snacks and drinks. If you prefer, you can purchase your own drinks and snacks and take this with you on the train. There are several shops next to the stations either at Fort William or Mallaig where you can stock up for your journey.

Where is the Best Place to Sit on the Jacobite Steam Train?

For the best views on the Jacobite Steam Train, I recommend that you get a seat by the window on the left side of the train when traveling from Fort William to Mallaig. This position offers the best photo opportunities, especially when crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct. The train briefly pauses on the viaduct, allowing passengers to take photos. However, on the return journey from Mallaig to Fort William, the train does not stop on the viaduct, so it’s important to be quick with your camera​​.

On the return journey from Mallaig to Fort William on the Jacobite Steam Train, it’s generally recommended to sit on the right side for scenic views.

What is the Journey Time from Fort William to Mallaig and the Return Journey from Mallaig to Fort William?

The journey from Fort William to Mallaig on the Jacobite Steam Train takes just over 2 hours. The return journey from Mallaig back to Fort William is slightly shorter, mainly because the train does not stop at Glenfinnan station on the way back as it does on the outbound trip.

The Jacobite Steam Train is extremely popular and can get booked up months in advance, especially during the summer season. To avoid disappointment, it’s recommended to book your tickets early​​​​.

We depart Inverness and begin our journey along the world-famous Loch Ness , stopping for photos above the ruins of Urquhart Castle . We continue west, and visit the Commando Memorial which overlooks the Nevis Range,  home to the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis .

Next, it’s time to set your sights upon the Jacobite Steam Train as it crosses the iconic arches on the Glenfinnan Viaduct , before we take the stunning Road to the Isles towards our lunch stop. Enjoy fresh seafood in the fishing town of Mallaig , before boarding the steam train to Fort William , where your driver will be waiting for you.

The beautiful scenery continues into the evening with a stop in Fort Augustus to see the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness up close. Finally, we visit the Falls of Foyers and Dores Beach on the banks of Loch Ness before arriving back into Inverness.

Full Tour Itinerary

Our coach leaves bright and early from Edinburgh heading first over the Firth of Forth then onwards through ancient Fife. We enter Highland Perthshire and make a comfort stop in the Victorian resort of Pitlochry before travelling through the Grampian Mountains to reach the picturesque Cairngorms National Park .

As we tour through Glen Spean look out for Ardverikie House, which recently played the part of Balmoral Castle in the latest series of “The Crown”.

A drive along the scenic “ Road to the Isles ” brings us to the historic fishing port of Mallaig, where there are fantastic views of the Isle of Skye across the Sound of Sleat.     

After free time to relax and, maybe enjoy a tasty treat from the famous Fish and Chip shop, it’s time to head to the station to join one of the world’s most incredible railway journeys aboard the Jacobite Steam Train .

The journey starts with superb coastal views as the train puffs its way past the silver sands of Morar to reach Arisaig, sitting by the sheltered shores of Loch nan Ceall.

Further on, we pass the tiny islet of Eilean na Moine, the location of Dumbledore’s final resting place. The small island is surrounded by Loch Eilt, used as the setting for Hagrid’s hut, and for the scene in Deathly Hallows part 1 where Voldemort steals the Elder Wand.

The highlight of the journey is crossing the breathtaking 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct , one of the most iconic images from the Harry Potter films as the train, now forever known as the Hogwarts Express, passes over the viaduct to Hogwarts School.

If time allows, the train might stop on the viaduct, as it did in Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry had his first run-in with a Dementor, allowing us some time to take in the stunning views of beautiful Loch Shiel , one of two lochs that stood in for Hogwarts Lake in the films. It’s where Buckbeak dips his toe in the water in Prisoner of Azkaban, and it’s seen to great effect in a lovely shot at the end of Half-Blood Prince when Hermione and Harry look out towards it from the Astronomy Tower.

The end of the line is Fort William, which sits on the banks of Loch Linnhe and in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain. On our homeward journey, we will see some of the locations used in several of the Harry Potter films.

If time permits there will be a short stop in dramatic Glen Coe , where several scenes from the series were filmed, notably the part in Prisoner of Azkaban where Hermione punches Draco Malfoy.

Further on, we pass the bleak wilderness of Rannoch Moor, we’re at the place where the Death Eaters halted and boarded the train in the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

There will be a short refreshment break in Tyndrum, before making for Stirling and the final part of our magical journey back into Edinburgh.

Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train will cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the Harry Potter films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause on the viaduct, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view.

Standard class tickets are included in the cost of the tour. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to upgrade these tickets to First Class.

Can I book seats on the coach?

The seating on the coach is not allocated so you are free to sit in any vacant seat.

We recommend that you and your party arrive at the boarding point together so that you can be seated in the same part of the coach.

I’ve missed my tour because I was late, can I get a refund?

We’re sorry but refunds or credits won’t be issued if you miss your tour because you are not at the departure point on time.

We enjoyed our time on the tour. Our group was made up of 7 people, and the seats were first come first serve. I noticed a few couples (not with our party) that had to be separated on the bus ride, as well as our group. I slept most of the way on the bus, however the remainder of our group really enjoyed the sights. We had brought a small backpack with a few snacks and water, and we were able to purchase more during our pit stops, which was a plus. To make most of the time before boarding the train, I would recommend eating something at one of the stops or take a lunch to explore.

The drive from Inverness to Fort William is about 1.5hrs, but give yourself at least 2-2.5hrs as driving in Scotland takes longer than expected on those tight curvy roads.

There is a paid parking lot adjacent to the Fort William train station, so just park, pay, and board your train.

Take Jacobite Steam Train Ride

The entire train trip is about 6hrs long: 2hr train ride to Mallaig, 2hrs in Mallaig, and 2hr train ride back to Fort William.

Doing it this way does not allow you to stop at the Glenfinnan Visitor Center to see the viaduct from the ground with the steam train crossing it as you’ll be on the train.

On the drive back to Inverness you can make stops at the Commando Monument, viewpoints of Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle.

We started on Union St in Inverness where we met our guide Harrison. Afterwards we all got on the bus and headed towards Fort William to grab the train. Along the way we stopped in Fort Augustus for a restroom break, and stopped at the Commando Memorial to see Ben Nevis in the distance. We also got some great Loch Ness history along the way. Once we reached the Fort William train station Harrison gave us time to get some coffee, a restroom break etc. until we were to meet him to head to our carriage. (Note: If you’re wanting a picture with the front of the train this break may be your only chance to get one). If you’re going to use the restroom make sure you have some coins with you as you have to pay to use the restroom Our group was assigned Carriage G (I wish their was an option to upgrade to First Class though..) The train ride itself was phenomenal. We had the regular steam engine in the front and a diesel engine at the back. The guy on the train explained that was because of some fire risk and that the day before they could not use the steam engine. 2 trolleys come by: one with HP souvenirs, and one with snacks & drinks. Sit on the LEFT SIDE of the train if you want a view of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Look out to your RIGHT SIDE about 10 minutes after stopping at the Glenfinnan Station Museum to see Dumbledore’s Grave at the end of Loch Elit. Once you’re in Malliag you’ll get some time for lunch. Here is where you’ll be fighting 100+ other people for a place to eat in only a handful of small restaurants. We eventually found a spot called The Chlachain Inn Restaurant where more than half the tables were reserved. Luckily they had a table for 2 open and we got to eat lunch before the rush (some people had to eat at the bar, and others were turned away). After Malliag we headed to the Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the train from the grounds. Here you had the option of seeing it from a distance on a hill that takes 5 minutes to reach, or you can try and take the Glenfinnan trail to see it up closer. We opted for the Glenfinnan trail but stayed by the river side to watch the train go over the bridge. Afterwards we took the scenic route back and we also stopped in Dores where we met the Nessie Hunter Steve Feltham. Overall it was a very enjoyable day made more so by our guide Harrison. This fantastic day out combines a scenic tour through the Cairngorms National Park and along the scenic Road to the Isles with the journey of a lifetime aboard the Jacobite Steam Train, the real Hogwarts Express!

From Inverness we make our way along the enigmatic banks of Loch Ness, stopping along the way so you scan the loch for any monster activity! At Fort Augustus see the locks of the Caledonian Canal that meanders its way through the Great Glen. We’ll follow the canal as it flows into Loch Oich and then Loch Lochy. Just before we reach Spean Bridge, we’ll break the journey to visit the Commando Memorial and, if the weather is kind, enjoy breathtaking views of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

On the outskirts of Fort William, we join the scenic Road to the Isles headed for the fishing port of Mallaig. Along the way, we’ll follow the banks of Loch Eil to reach Glenfinnan where we’ll see the famous viaduct, made famous in the Harry Potter movies and the monument that commemorates the landing of Bonnie Prince Charlie here in 1745 at the start of the ill-fated Jacobite uprising. Enjoy panoramic views of Skye and the Small Isles when we reach Arisaig, then the expansive Silver Sands of Morar before arriving in Mallaig.

After free time for lunch, head to the station and take your reserved seats aboard the Jacobite Steam Train, the real Hogwarts Express. The whistle blows, and off we set on one of the World’s great railway journeys. The 42-mile route will take us past Britain’s shortest river, deepest lake and highest mountain. As we steam over the Glenfinnan Viaduct look-out for the views over to Loch Shiel.

On arrival in Fort William, re-join your mini-coach for the journey back to Inverness which will take in the scenic beauty of the Cairngorms National Park. Enjoy a picturesque drive through Glen Spean and along the banks of Loch Laggan before making a stop in Aviemore where you can relax and enjoy afternoon tea. The final part of our tour will take us to the Slochd Summit then over Drumossie Moor and back to Inverness.

We started on Union St in Inverness where we met our guide Harrison. Afterwards we all got on the bus and headed towards Fort William to grab the train. Along the way we stopped in Fort Augustus for a restroom break, and stopped at the Commando Memorial to see Ben Nevis in the distance. We also got some great Loch Ness history along the way. Once we reached the Fort William train station Harrison gave us time to get some coffee, a restroom break etc. until we were to meet him to head to our carriage. (Note: If you’re wanting a picture with the front of the train this break may be your only chance to get one). If you’re going to use the restroom make sure you have some coins with you as you have to pay to use the restroom Our group was assigned Carriage G (I wish their was an option to upgrade to First Class though..) The train ride itself was phenomenal. We had the regular steam engine in the front and a diesel engine at the back. The guy on the train explained that was because of some fire risk and that the day before they could not use the steam engine. 2 trolleys come by: one with HP souvenirs, and one with snacks & drinks. Sit on the LEFT SIDE of the train if you want a view of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Look out to your RIGHT SIDE about 10 minutes after stopping at the Glenfinnan Station Museum to see Dumbledore’s Grave at the end of Loch Elit. Once you’re in Malliag you’ll get some time for lunch. Here is where you’ll be fighting 100+ other people for a place to eat in only a handful of small restaurants. We eventually found a spot called The Chlachain Inn Restaurant where more than half the tables were reserved. Luckily they had a table for 2 open and we got to eat lunch before the rush (some people had to eat at the bar, and others were turned away). After Malliag we headed to the Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the train from the grounds. Here you had the option of seeing it from a distance on a hill that takes 5 minutes to reach, or you can try and take the Glenfinnan trail to see it up closer. We opted for the Glenfinnan trail but stayed by the river side to watch the train go over the bridge. Afterwards we took the scenic route back and we also stopped in Dores where we met the Nessie Hunter Steve Feltham. Overall it was a very enjoyable day made more so by our guide Harrison. Harry Potter Jacobite steam train breaks down on first day back in service

The breakdown on Monday, on the route made famous in the Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets film, affected the rail network, with ScotRail unable to run trains between Fort William and Mallaig.

A steam train made famous by the Harry Potter films has broken down on its first day back in service.

The Jacobite train service through the Highlands was brought to a halt just outside of Glenfinnan on Monday due to poor weather conditions.

Operator West Coast Railways (WCR) said the team on board "did their best" to restart the service, but the train had to be rescued by another diesel engine.

The breakdown affected the rail network, with ScotRail unable to run trains between Fort William and Mallaig.

Services resumed later following the recovery of the Jacobite.

WCR apologised to the customers affected and said compensation would be offered.

Services are running as scheduled on Tuesday.

Train operating after earlier suspension

The Jacobite had only just kickstarted its 2024 season after being suspended pending a safety ruling last month.

WCR is currently awaiting a ruling from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on whether it can continue to run with hinged-door carriages.

The service had operated for more than 30 years under an exemption but in 2023, following an accident, rail authorities issued further safety advice to operators of carriages which are not centrally controlled or locked by train crew.

WCR has applied to renew the exemption, and made a request for temporary permission to operate its full heritage carriages while the ORR decided whether the Jacobite is safe.

Train now 'slightly shorter' and 'reduced capacity'

While it awaits a decision, a fleet of carriages which complies with the safety rules will be used to allow the service to continue .

However, the train will be "slightly shorter" and will run at a "reduced capacity", which could affect passengers who previously booked tickets on the famous service.

WCR previously said customers affected by the change will be contacted with available options, including the opportunity to re-book their trip.

ORR had 'justifiable' approach

WCR lost a High Court challenge against the ORR over the safety of doors on its carriages in December.

The company had complained that the multimillion-pound cost of having to retrofit central locking could "destroy" its business and argued its door systems were just as safe.

However, a judge dismissed the operator's case and concluded the ORR had taken a "justifiable" approach.

The service takes tourists from Fort William to Mallaig, including over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Jacobite train featured in the 2002 film Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets as the Hogwarts Express.

The film was the second in the movie franchise inspired by JK Rowling's books about a young wizard and his years at a magical school in Scotland.
