A Guide to Exploring Saxon Switzerland National Park

A stone bridge at Kirnitzsch Valley

Whether you see it as a day trip or explore it over several days, Saxon Switzerland National Park is sure to enthral you with its unique landscape.

At the Saxon Switzerland National Park , you get a chance to bond closely with untamed nature, explore ancient architecture and take selfies against the backdrop of one of the most gorgeous bridges in Germany . Here’s everything you need to know about visiting this part of the country.

The Saxon Switzerland National Park, one of 16 national parks in Germany, is located in the Free State of Saxony in the eastern part of Germany. It is around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) southeast of Dresden , the capital city of Saxony . The national park is a part of a natural area approximately 710 kilometers squared (274 square miles) in size.

The craggy rocks of Saxon Switzerland National Park

The nearest airport to Saxon Switzerland National Park is Dresden, but other nearby airports include Prague and Leipzig. From each of these airports, you can catch train connections to the national park. Deutsche Bahn closely connects Saxon Switzerland National Park to the rest of Europe. Regional trains leave from Dresden approximately every 30 minutes and stop at the towns of Pirna, Obervogelgesang, Stadt Wehlen, Kurort Rathen, Königstein and Bad Schandau, which are all close to or part of the national park. An immensely enjoyable way of getting to the national park from Dresden is on a cruise boat, which gives you the opportunity to enjoy pristine nature en route. Of course, you can also choose to drive to Saxon Switzerland National Park.

The most popular ways of getting around in the national park are nostalgic paddle streamers, steam boats and diesel boats. Moreover, you can opt to take the Kirnitzsch Valley tram, that runs largely on solar energy and connects many of the points of interest in the park.

Where to stay

Many travelers see Saxon Switzerland as a day trip from Dresden . However, if you wish to explore the national park in more detail and enjoy its quiet beauty once the tour buses have left for the day, you can base yourself in Pirna, Obervogelgesang or Bad Schandau. Each of these towns has plenty of options in accommodation and gastronomy suited to all tastes and budgets. Apparthotel Steiger , Hotel Grundmühle , Biohotel Helvetia and Parkhotel Bad Schandau are some of the popular hotels that serve as great bases to explore Saxon Switzerland National Park.

What to see and do

Bastei bridge.

Bastei, an imposing rock formation, is the most famous landmark in Saxon Switzerland National Park. What adds to its uniqueness is the Bastei Bridge, which seems to have merged naturally with the craggy rocks, making for a surreal sight. Travelers are welcome to stroll along the bridge and enjoy panoramic views of large stretches of the national park. Best of all, entry is free.

Königstein Fortress Festung

When in Saxon Switzerland National Park, make sure that you visit Königstein Fortress. At this ancient fortress, you can walk the footsteps of kings and princes, and learn about the time it was used as a prison. A walk around this fortress also offers unforgettable views of the park.

Explore on foot or bike

There are numerous hiking and biking trails in Saxon Switzerland National Park. Just pick one suited to your interests and stamina and hit the road. One of the most popular hiking routes is Painter’s Way (Malerweg Route). There are several guided biking and hiking tours, as well as bike rental services in the region.

Rejuvenate and have fun in pools

Saxon Switzerland has several pools and saunas that not only offer relaxation, but hours of fun for the family. The most popular of these is ‘Toskana Therme’ (Tuscan spa), located on the banks of the River Elbe in Bad Schandau. Ambient light and sound add to the already intoxicating experience of floating in salt water.

Mariba Freizeitwelt in Neustadt, with its 1,300 square meters of warm pools, over 4,000 square meters of lawns and a 3,500 square meter sauna is a favorite haunt for families. On the other hand, Geibeltbad Pirna earns major brownie points with kids for its thrilling water slide.

A must see tour if you are staying in Dresden and want to view some nature in Czech Republic

A hike to Bastei Bridge was breath taking - not for the faint hearted as some of walks were a bit scary! Our guide Vitka was great - she gave us the history of the sandstone formations. Lunch was in the Kamenice Canyon in Czech Republic - again a long trek down the gorge for a boat ride. An excellent tour - but make sure to stay hydrated and to wear suitable clothing!

Kudos to Saxon Tours for fantastic tour

We recently (late June) went on the Amazing Bastei Bridge and Tisa Walls Labyrinth tour that included both Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland. Our guide Jitka K and driver Milan V were great! Milan was extremely kind in helping one of the two of us who was experiencing leg pain during the tour, especially during the Tisa Walls Labyrinth part of the excursion. Jitka was a fount of knowledge with regard to the area, including its history. She was just a pleasure to be around and to have as our guide. The tour itself was a great value and well worth the money. We particularly enjoyed the experience of dining in the Czech restaurant that was included in the tour.

Amazing tour

It was an amazing tour. A lot to see and a lot of walking. you need to have a good condition to take this tour. We visited 3 different highlights and they are beautifull in their one way. I mostly liked the Basteibridge; the view and the nature are spectatulair. We were with a small group (7 persons), 4 of them were from HongKong and we came from the Netherlands. We had a lot of fun during the day and learned not also from this tour but also from HongKong. Also our guide could tell a lot about the history of these highlights. Compliments for her but also for the driver of our small bus. If you are ever going to visit Prague you should also see those hightlights. it takes a day to see them all but you learn and see a lot.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Tour ❤

We took this tour on a very hot day in Dresden. It provided the perfect relief from the heat. Milan picked us up in a very comfortable air conditioned van. He was very accommodating and provided waters and a snack as requested. Vitka was our tour guide and she explained our itinerary and provided a lot of history of the sites. The hike at Bastei was easy and the views were beautiful. We arrived early before the crowds and while the weather was a bit cooler. Then we went for a traditional lunch and a hike to the Kamenice Canyon for a boat ride. The entire day was thoroughly enjoyable and exactly what we wanted. We love being in nature and viewing history. We highly recommend this tour!

Beautiful Saxony Tour

I went on this trip with my husband and 11 month old. The tour guide was personable and provided information on the area and the sights. The views and hikes were beautiful and it was so convenient that we were picked up directly from our hotel. I highly recommend this trip and it was very do-able with a small child (moderate level hike and not too long).

9 Must-Do Sights & Hikes in Saxon Switzerland National Park Plus Map

Germany

When Is the Best Time

Located in Saxon Switzerland National Park are the famous Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Here you can visit breathtaking sights like the 194 m high Bastei Bridge, hike stunning trails and even climb gorgeous rock formations.  The region got already developed for tourism at the end of the 18th century. Many visitors come here simply to visit the main attraction, the Bastei Bridge, and the remained ruins of the Neurathen Castle. We spent more than a week here because there is so much more to explore.

I wrote this guide for everyone: Sightseeing only visitors, as well as hikers, and climbers. I provide my personal accommodation tips as well as tips for cruise tours from Dresden. Read my complete guide below, including weather details and tips for the Bastei Bridge or jump directly to 9 Must-Do Sights and Hikes in Saxon Switzerland National Park with insider tips!

Avoiding the Crowds in Saxon Switzerland

Crowds at the Bastei at midday

It is the most popular place in Saxon Switzerland, with around 1.5 million visitors each year. To enjoy this beautiful place, the Bastei, without crowds, you should visit this fascinating sight in spring, autumn or winter, either very early in the morning or late evening. We visited this magic sandstone bridge several times in May. We enjoyed most our visit at 6.30 on a Sunday morning. We shared this incredibly impressive Bastei Bridge and the surroundings with very few people. Avoid midday when the bridge and the castle ruin are overrun.

What is new since 2023

The last part of the Bastei Bridge early morning without the crowds

After more than six years, the viewing platform known as the "Balcony of Saxony" at the Bastei Rock in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Saxon, Switzerland, was reopened on Friday, February 3, 2023. Visitors can once again enjoy the famous Bastei view of the River Elbe.

The new floating platform is about 20 m long and up to 3.5 m wide. Paths for barrier-free access were also created, and a railing was installed.

The sandstone was porous from erosion, and the last ten metres had to be closed in 2016. After securing the rock, the new platform was placed above it. The construction is supported at the back of the rock and hangs freely in front at a low height so that it seems to float. The total cost is immense at 3 million euros.

Tip for Photographers

To get the perfect shot of the Bastei Bridge, come here early morning. To experience the sunrise at the Bastei is a must but pretty early during summer. We chose the Berghotel Bastei next to the bridge and enjoyed our breakfast afterwards.

Weather and Hiking Conditions

Heilige Stiege down to Schmilka

Usually, the best time for hiking in Saxon Switzerland and the Bohemian Swiss are from April to October. Regarding the crowds, spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Trails are slippery when wet, especially the iron stairs and stone steps. Leave the mountains during thunderstorms, don't walk on the iron stairs. Winter is awesome when the hills are covered in snow, but the weather is more unpredictable. During summer, it's pleasantly warm, around 20°C in the daytime, but it can get hot while hiking without any shadow in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

The Kirnitz Gorge - the forest mirrors in the river

Expect minus degrees day and night on top of the mountains during winter. It is several degrees warmer at the foot of the mountains. Rain (snow in winter) occurs throughout the year, occasionally heavy thunderstorms during summer. We experienced a thunderstorm and hail at the end of May.

Getting to the Bastei from Dresden (Tips & Tours)

Cruise on River Elbe with amazing views to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains

For those who are limited in time, you can either take a train from Dresden to Rathen or book a guided tour. The train (S-Bahn) from Dresden Central Station to Rathen operates at least twice each hour. From here you can take a ferry boat to cross the river Elbe. You can't miss the ferry; signs leading to the jetty. After the short ferry ride, it’s a steep trail along with many steps through the forest to the Bastei Bridge. However, consider that there is much more to explore than this picturesque and famous bridge. To discover this excellent hiking region, you can also book a guided trip from Dresden to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Sunset Elbe Sandstone Mountains - Picture taken at the Cow Shed "Kuhstall"

The hikes in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are well marked. Usually, parking is available at the trailheads. Getting a parking space can be an issue at weekends, on bank holidays and during summer. Most of the trails have steep descents and ascents. The views from the top are always spectacular. We describe our highlights of this awesome hiking region, but of course, trails can be shortened or extended.

My Hiking Map Tip: I highly recommend buying a Saxon Switzerland hiking map . It is a labyrinth of hikes and climbing routes, all well-marked, but as an exception, our hiking app was insufficient, and most of the trails are not named.

The Painter’s Way – Multi-Day Hike

Gautschgrotto along the Painter's Way

Painters, musicians, and poets got inspired by the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, like Caspar David Friedrich, William Turner or Antonin Dvorak. The Painters Trail is a 114 km long hike, split into eight stages. The path leads to the most spectacular parts of the National Park. It’s almost a circular trail leading on both sides of the river Elbe. Luggage transport from one accommodation to the next one is offered. You only need to carry your daypack. Get in contact with your host and ask them for assistance. Unfortunately, there isn’t any information provided in English. The attached link about the different stages and hosts is in German only. Accommodations Painters Way for each stage . Click on the map to choose the region you like to hike this famous trail.  If requested, many of these places prepare a lunch package for you as well.

Via Ferratas

For those who like to climb a via ferrata there are several around usually called "Stiege" which can be combined with hiking. Initially, they were built to overcome the mountains, often transporting goods. That's also the reason for extremely long staircases with hundreds of steps. These two were our favourite ones:

  • A combination of two different via ferrata:  The "Zwillingsstiege" and "Häntschelstiege" plus spectacular views on the top.
  • Rübezahlstiege ; is one of the most difficult ones. Climbing experiences are helpful in mastering it.

Climbing - Where Free-Climbing Was Invented

Climbers in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains

The Saxon Switzerland where free climbing was invented, and a unique technique is required. Climbing here is completely different, and the existing rules are essential:

  • It’s only allowed to climb up on dry rocks. If there was rain before, you have to wait an entire day; if the stone is wet, it’s less stable and can break.
  • Chalk is not allowed; it would destroy the sandstone over time.
  • All kinds of metal for your protection while climbing is prohibited. Instead, you only use a special type of knot that has to be put in narrow cracks. Climbing lessons for this unique technique are offered. Climbing School Lilienstein  in German only; e-mail address:  [email protected]

Kirnitzsch Valley Tram - public transport for hikers

There are buses available the entire week. These buses transport up to 20 bikes as well. A historic tram is operating in the Kirnitzsch Valley, giving you access to different trailheads.

A Hiking Guide to Saxon Switzerland National Park

Hiking Guide to Saxon Switzerland National Park - Schrammsteine

I went on a road trip to Saxon Switzerland and did some hiking, camping and exploring. Where to go and what to do? This is what you are going to find out

Either you get lost in the hundreds of labyrinthic gorges or marvel the vast valleys between the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Saxon Switzerland will leave you more than once astounded. I visited this national park in Germany and explored its hidden secrets, climbed its gigantic rock columns and hiked for hours and hours among the thick green forest. I also found out which are the best and most scenic hiking routes, as well sightseeing spots to pay a visit.

Morning views in Saxon Switzerland

How to get there

Located just 30km south of Dresden, right at the border with Czech Republic’s Bohemian Saxony National Park, Saxon Switzerland is a great nature getaway for travelers visiting the cities of Berlin, Dresden or Prague. Its central location and accesibility by public transportation makes the park a very popular spot for either locals or visitors.

If you want to visit Saxon Switzerland, the city of Dresden is probably the perfect start to an adventure. It is not only the closest city to the national park, but also home for one of the most beautiful old towns in Germany. Dresden is easy accessible as well, as it is connected from all Germany and eastern Europe by trains and buses that run almost daily.

Even though I planned a road trip to the park, I decided to get first a fast train from Berlin to Dresden and arrive one day beforehand. It took only two hours to get there and ended up paying no more than 15 EUR for a one-way ticket. With prices like this, renting a car from Dresden and not from Berlin was at the end the easiest and most convenient option.

Map of Saxon Switzerland National Park

Visiting Saxon Switzerland with public transportation

Once in Dresden, there are several ways to get to the national park. The cheapest and most practical option is taking the S-Train from Dresden HBF (main station) to the villages of Rathen, Königstein, Bad Schandau or Krippen (depending which part of the park you want to visit). A train ride should take anything between 30 – 45 minutes and leave you not far away to any of the key entrances to the national park.

There are also several bus lines going to certain specific spots around the park. However, busses do not run regularly and sometimes is faster to simply start walking from the train station.

Visiting Saxon Switzerland with your own car

As most of my nature getaways, renting a car was my preferred option. I always though it is the best way to travel if you want to keep the budget relatively low, but at the same time explore as much as possible. Renting a car from Dresden is not as expensive as it sounds like. Small vehicles including all insurances and services start at 25 EUR/day and since the distances are relatively short, gas prices will be minimal if you are sharing the vehicle with one or two friends.

During my visit to Saxon Switzerland, I rented a camper van. For me, it was not only the most convenient way to move around, but also a great option to save some costs in accommodation and at the same time visit a different area every day.

With many camper rental options to choose from, I found the best prices and options with following companies:

  • Paul Camper
  • Share a Camper

At the same time, travelers who are not coming from Dresden, but Berlin or Prague instead, can find more convenient other options like:

  • Road Surfer
  • Indie Campers

Cycling the Elbe Cycle Route or trekking the Malerweg

Cycling to the national park is also a common choice among local dresdeners. The Elbe Cycle Route is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Europe. It runs almost 1250 km from the Krkonoše Mountains or Czech Republic to the North Sea and also connects the key spots of the Saxon Switzerland National Park to Dresden City Center. This cycling route to Saxon Switzerland is mostly flat and can be easily done on a day trip.

A slower, but interesting option is to walk along the Elbe river. In 6-7 hours, you will reach the town of Rathen, where you can spend the night and see the Bastei Bridge. Other more experienced adventurers opt for walking the Malerweg (Painter’s Way) , a multiple-day long distance trek that can be done in 7-10 days depending on your speed and level of fitness.

Views of the many mountains inside the park

Where to stay

Even though most travelers prefer to visit Saxon Switzerland for a day trip, explore one or two key spots easy to access and move further, the beauty and magic of the park is better to be appreciated by staying multiple days in the area. It will not only make the experience way more individual, but also get you closer to the untouched nature that inspired painters like Caspar David or William Turner centuries ago.

Staying in the nearby tows

If you are looking forward to staying in a hotel, finding the perfect accommodation will depend a lot how you are traveling to the park. Having your own vehicle will help you find less expensive and more family guesthouses bordering the national park, while going only by public transportation can limit you to stay in smaller villages, where the train or bus stops.

The most popular villages to stay are Rathen, Königstein or Bad Schandau – with the last one being the closest to the larger area of the national park.

With hundreds of guesthouses along the Elbe, finding one spot to spend the night won’t be a challenge and, in most family-run guesthouses, you should simply give them a call and ask if they have a room free.

Nevertheless, the Saxon Switzerland National Park is one of the few spots in Germany, where travelers can experiment almost every kind of accommodation type. Luxury hotels, family run guesthouses, youth hostels, camping areas, and even wild camping are some of the options you can try and experiment.

Staying overnight inside Saxon Switzerland

The Saxon Switzerland National Park is a protected area and for that reason, there is no lodging inside the national park. However, many hotels are situated right next to the national park and entering its premises is simply crossing the street.

The most known of these options is the Berghotel Bastei, a 4-star lodge right next to the Bastei Bridge viewing platform and perfect for those travelers, who want to see the best view of the Bastei Bridge before the sun comes out, but don’t want to hike at all.

There are also many camping areas surrounding the park, where dozens of families gather and spend overnight each weekend, prepare BBQs and start a full day of hiking. The official website of Saxon Switzerland shows the different camping grounds around the park. Here is a full list of them and their average prices per night.

Still, there is one last option if you really want to be overnight inside the national park. Wild camping, cave camping or boofen is only allowed in Saxon Switzerland and consists in sleeping under a rock or inside a cave inside the protected area. However, boofen is only allowed in several specific spots of the national park and you are not allowed to bring your own tent. It’s only you, your sleeping bag and some food to get energy.

Wanna visit the Saxon Switzerland National Park with a tour?

If you want to plan everything with local tour operators beforehand from the comfort of your home. Viator is the best platform for it.

They have the largest database of local tour operators worldwide, and you can simply send a request and negotiate a tour and a price directly with the operator. You don’t have to pay any additional fees.

These are some of the most popular tours in the White Desert at Viator

Best places to visit in Saxon Switzerland and what to do

Bastei bridge.

From postcards to giant posters at airports, the Bastei Bridge is the most known spot in Saxon Switzerland. Located only 1km away from the town of Rathen, it is also the easiest highlights of the park to access and one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset.

To reach the Bastei Bridge, you can easily take a bus from Rathen, that would leave you right next to its entrance (check google maps for the timetables) or do one of the several hikes that ends up there. What makes the Bastei Bridge so trendy and special is not just the beautiful bridge structure located between boulders, but the breathtaking views in all different directions that you can see from their viewing platforms.

Even though there is no entrance fee to the bridge, there is one viewpoint, where a payment of 2 EUR is asked for. Nevertheless, any view to, and from the bridge is marvelous and worth the visit.

Sunrise at the Basteibrücke (Bastei Bridge)

Schwedenlöcher (Swedish Holes)

Located right next to the Bastei Bridge, the Swedish Holes is basically an obligatory hike after (or before) you visit the Bastei Bridge.

Even though big part of the hike is simply ascending, or descending (depending in which direction you go) a staircase though stacks of gigantic rocks, the route itself offer some lovely and exceptional views depending from which angle you look at.

Stairs at the Swedish Holes in Saxon Switzerland

One of the most memorable spots during the hike is the view of the Hönigstein reflected on the quiet waters of the Amselsee. Even though there is only one single spot where this photograph can be taken to perfection, the beauty of it really summarizes the magic of the whole hike itself.

Reflection of the Hönigstein from the Amselsee

Schrammsteine

Being my favorite spot at Saxon Switzerland, the hike to the top of the Schrammsteine might not be the easiest, but it is definitely the most rewarding.

Located on the south-east part of Saxon Switzerland, the Schrammsteine are a series of massive sandstone boulders that seem to come to life the more you look at them and the closer you get. In order to reach the top of these 400 m giants, there is a very well signalized hiking path, in which you go higher and higher with each step you take.

At some points of the hike, there are also a few ladders, making the climb possible for people of all ages in a normal physical condition.

Hiking trail to the Schrammsteine

Once at the top, there are numerous viewpoints offering the most beautiful views of the park (by far) and the rewards of seeing Saxon Switzerland from the top of the world.

If you are experienced and adventurous enough, free climbing the Schrammsteine is allowed and you will end up not only enjoying the sun from one of the highest spots in Saxon Switzerland, but also climbing one of the most fascinating routes in Europe.

NOTE : The mobile app Komoot shows most of the hiking routes inside the national park . My travel partner downloaded the app before reaching the park and it really saved us a couple of times. Even though Google Maps is always a good choice in Germany, sometimes the map had no idea where I was or could not find the best hiking routes to reach a certain spot.

Königstein Fortress Festung

Known as the largest intact fortress in Germany and standing out from the mountainous landscape of Saxon Switzerland, Königstein Fortress is a nice getaway for those interested in the history and the politics of the region centuries ago.

Inside, there are several exhibitions about the past kings and queens who lived in Saxony, as well its time serving as a prison and a hospital during war.

The views from the top of the fortress are also a good reason to go up, as you will be able to see several key spots of the Saxon Switzerland National Park, as well some of the towns and villages nearby.

Tickets, opening hours and more information are available at the official website of Königstein Fortress Festung

Herkulessäulen (Hercules Columns)

Considered by many locals as a climbing paradise, the area between the towns of Bielatal and Rosenthal offer dozens of hiking paths that go through fairy-tale forest, abandoned fortresses and rock formations with the weirdest shapes possible.

Travelers driving to this area will not only pass charming tiny villages with restaurants offering homemade food and beer, but huge forested areas with gigantic rock formations and one or two people climbing to the top. This is the spot to get lunch or definitely a snack before a hike.

Rock Formations around the Herkulessäule

The area has hundreds of giant rock formations. However, from all the distinctive boulders in the area, the Hercules columns are by far the most impressive. They are just 800 meters away from a parking spot and due to their fragile structure, you might have the feeling any of the two rocks will crumble down at any moment.

Even though the view of the Hercules Columns is the highlight for the visitors hiking, exploring between the giant boulders and free climbing smaller meter rocks to get a view of the natural reserve is what makes the experience more surreal.

NOTE: Saxon Switzerland is known as a Mecca for climbing in Europe. Free climbing is allowed in many of its areas and there is a big climbing culture inside the park. However, route vary from all levels of difficulty and you should have the required equipment for climbing if you want to try it.

View of the Herkulessäule

The Labyrinth

Located on the southern side of the Elbe River, the best way to reach the Labyrinth is by car. Even though it is outside the official premises of the Saxon Switzerland National Park, the labyrinth is a protected area of Saxony.

This natural labyrinth made of perfectly placed rocks in the middle of the forest is a popular getaway for local families with younger children and it can be considered a playground in the middle of the nature. With hundreds of boulders (not taller than 5 meters), caves, passages and multiple levels, it is a pleasant spot to become a kid again and get lost.

Early in the morning it is a great place to take the sun and grab a bite, while in the afternoon, is better to avoid due to the large crowds it attracts.

View from the Labyrinth in Saxon Switzerland

Other spots you can visit

Saxon Switzerland has thousands of magical spots to visit and limiting a visit to just one or two would be unsatisfying. At the same time, the deeper you get inside the park, the less people you will see and the more personal experiences you will find.

Even though I spend several days traveling inside Saxon Switzerland, I was able to not see even 1% of its beauty and ended up skipping many beautiful places, I wish I went to. Scenic spots like Breite Kluft or the Heilige Stiege offer splendid views of the national park, while the Lichtenhain Waterfall or the rock of Kuhstall offer a calm break for short stop.

Saxon Switzerland is probably one of these places where the more you explore, the more you like it.

Bohemian & Saxon Switzerland Photo Tour Itinerary

Leave everything to us and focus only on your creativity, gorges of river kamenice.

Your private tour starts in Prague, where we will pick you up and drive less than two hours right to our hotel in the heart of the mysterious Bohemian Switzerland National Park .

Our first photoshoot will be a boat trip through the gorges of the Kamenice river , surrounded by steep rock walls up to 150 meters high. The location combines wild forest and a calm river and is exceptional for capturing reflections of the picturesque environment and taking long exposures . And if we are lucky, we may spot a bright blue kingfisher.

Czechia Photo Tour, Bohemian switzerland

Pravčice Gate

Now it’s time to photograph something really monumental. We will hike up to the famous Pravčice Gate , the largest natural sandstone arch on the European continent and the symbol of the entire area. It is the result of millions of years of weathering of the less resistant parts of the rock mass.

Landscaped trails and staircases run from the entrance to the individual viewpoints, from which we will focus on creative compositions of Pravčice Gate and the surroundings, both nearby and further afield. Once we finish at our last photo location of the day, we will return to our hotel and prepare for sunrise.

The next morning, we will wake up early so we can be in the right place at the right time to set up our tripods and capture the sun’s first rays touching the impressive sandstone towers above the Elbe river. It’s no wonder that Bastei is the most famous rock formation in Saxon Switzerland .

We will especially enjoy the views of the diverse landscape with the curving river and Bastei Bridge which is built right into the rocks almost 200 meters above the river. This entire location offers truly exceptional opportunities for creative composition as well as work with natural light and backlight. After this photography feast, we will drive back to Prague and drop you off at your hotel.

Watch: JUDAS PRIEST Performs In Munich During 2024 'Metal Masters' European Tour

British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST played at Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany on Monday, March 25 as part of the band's "Metal Masters" European tour. Fan-filmed video of the concert can be seen below.

PRIEST 's 17-song setlist included three songs from the band's latest album, "Invincible Shield" : the title track, "Panic Attack" and "Crown Of Horns" .

PRIEST 's setlist for the Munich concert was as follows:

01. Panic Attack 02. You've Got Another Thing Comin' 03. Breaking The Law 04. Rapid Fire 05. Lightning Strike 06. Love Bites 07. Saints In Hell 08. Crown Of Horns 09. Turbo Lover 10. Invincible Shield 11. Victim Of Changes 12. Metal Gods 13. The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown) (FLEETWOOD MAC cover) 14. Painkiller

15. The Hellion / Electric Eye 16. Hell Bent For Leather 17. Living After Midnight

In a recent appearance on The Break Down With Nath & Johnny podcast , JUDAS PRIEST bassist Ian Hill was asked who in the band has the final say when it comes to picking a setlist for the PRIEST live shows. He responded: "Well, it is probably Rob [ Halford , PRIEST singer], really. But then again, we've got a whole spectrum now. You've got the younger element with Richie [ Faulkner , PRIEST guitarist]. He's the same age as my eldest son. And then comes Scott [ Travis , PRIEST drummer] and you've got Glenn [ Tipton , PRIEST guitarist], of course. He can't do it anymore [due to his battle with Parkinson's disease]. [But] he's still sharp as a pin between his ears. Then Andy [ Sneap , PRIEST touring guitarist] and Rob and myself. So you've got a full spectrum there of ages. So everybody has their own favorites and their own types of JUDAS PRIEST song. We all sort of [go], 'Yeah, like that. No, don't like that one.' And then we'll go. If someone's adamant that they really don't wanna do something, well, you don't wanna do something, and vice versa — if someone really wants to do a particular track, you do it. Like I say, you've got the ring-fence tracks there that you've gotta do — the 'Breaking The Law' s and the 'Living After Midnight' s and things like that, that you have to do. It's what brings people to the shows, basically. And then you've got your other sort of classic PRIEST songs, which is a little bit easier because you can swap and change those between — do a month maybe using one song, change it to another one of a similar kind. And then try to get some new stuff in there — three, maybe four maximum is about as much as you can get at any one time. I'm sure there'll be more than that, that we'll go through. And just swap and change as we go."

Asked if there are any songs that he can think of straight off the top of his head, in the PRIEST back catalog that he really loves to play live but never has, Ian said: "Ah, there's one that we have played live that we haven't played for a while and that's 'Dissident Aggressor' . I still say that's probably my all-time favorite song. It's just so raw — it's just pure rock, really. It's one of those songs that, even in the studio, I can remember it being — it's two guitars, bass, drums and vocals. And I think there might be one extra guitar on there through the lead break. Other than that, it's totally raw. It's exactly as it would be on stage. And I love that song, apart from it being a great song. And there's always other things. We've never really done 'Before The Dawn' — from the other point of view, the other end of the spectrum, if there's a quiet part in [the show]. These days people tend to prefer the more upbeat stuff rather than the quieter pieces. But that would be cool to do as well. It's only about two and a half, three minutes long anyway, so it wouldn't take much time. But there's loads in there — there's loads of them. 'Sinner' we haven't done, so it'd be great to do that again. We haven't done that for a while. But we'll see."

In a separate interview with Metal Pilgrim , Halford spoke about the setlist for the European leg of PRIEST 's tour with SAXON and URIAH HEEP . He said: "We've had this conversation before as far as trying to put the setlist together. And after 19 studio albums, it's, like, 'Oh my God. Where do we go?' If we didn't play 'Breaking The Law' , there'd be a riot. If we didn't play 'Painkiller' , there'd be a riot. There are certain songs that you are indebted to your fans to play, because they're part of the fabric of who you are as a band. Without naming names, there are certain bands where you know you wanna hear that song when you go to a show. So there's a portion of the setlist that already writes itself. Having said that, yeah, we are gonna go quite deep, and we found some songs from previous albums that we're gonna work with and we're gonna bring out. So there'll probably be at least two or three deep cuts on this setlist."

Rob continued: "At any given moment, we've got 60 to 70 songs we can play — at any given moment. And then we're gonna add more into the mix. It's fun to see the texts and the e-mails flying through: 'Well, I'll give you this one if you give me that one.' 'Cause you've gotta find a balance. When a band plays on stage, every single bandmember has to agree on the set list. There's no place for, 'Oh, dude, I've gotta play this one.' There's no place for that. You've all gotta be believing in that particular song as you go through the show. And it's gonna be fantastic. And this is gonna be a really eventful tour as we're about to kick off in Europe, with our friends SAXON and URIAH HEEP ."

Hill is the sole remaining original member of PRIEST , which formed in 1969. Halford joined the group in 1973 and Tipton signed on in 1974. Rob left PRIEST in the early 1990s to form his own band, then came back to PRIEST in 2003. Original guitarist K.K. Downing parted ways with the band in 2011, and was replaced by Faulkner .

JUDAS PRIEST 's latest album, "Invincible Shield" entered the U.K. chart at No. 2, just behind Ariana Grande 's "Eternal Sunshine" .

Prior to "Invincible Shield" 's arrival, PRIEST 's highest U.K. chart achievement was with 1980's "British Steel" , which reached No. 4.

PRIEST 's 2018 album "Firepower" entered the chart at No. 5.

"Invincible Shield" is JUDAS PRIEST 's fifth Top 10 album, after the aforementioned "British Steel" and "Firepower" , as well as 2014's "Redeemer Of Souls" (No. 6) and the 1979 live album "Unleashed In The East" (No. 10).

"Invincible Shield" landed at No. 1 in Germany, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as No. 5 in France, No. 8 in Italy and No. 16 in Australia.
