What's new

  • Revives the Voyager name from the now-defunct Plymouth brand
  • Replaces base and fleet trim levels of the Chrysler Pacifica
  • No notable changes from the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica L and LX
  • Launches the second Voyager generation under the Chrysler brand and fifth Voyager generation overall

Here's a Throwback Thursday we didn't see coming. Chrysler is rebranding the lower trim levels of its Pacifica minivan with an old-school name from its past. The 2020 Chrysler Voyager dusts off a nameplate from the defunct Plymouth brand that dates back 45 years and was last seen about 15 years ago when it quietly disappeared as — wait for it — the Chrysler Voyager.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Chrysler Voyager L 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.42 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Despite the retro name dust, the Voyager is really just the first two trim levels of last year's Pacifica. There are minor feature changes here and there, but effectively it's the same enchilada. That means you get plenty of space for passengers and cargo, a classy-looking cabin, capable acceleration, and even useful towing capability of up to 3,600 pounds.

Reviving the Voyager nameplate is a curious choice, and we suspect it has more to do with the impending discontinuation of the old Dodge Grand Caravan than a detailed plan of selling a ton more minivans under the Chrysler brand. As a shopper, all you need to focus on is the end result. The Voyager is a solid minivan and its pricing is attractive, but it can't quite match the Honda Odyssey for overall refinement.

Which Voyager does Edmunds recommend?

2020 chrysler voyager models.

The base L trim comes with essentials such as a rearview camera, cloth seats, a second-row bench seat (for seven-passenger seating), a folding/collapsible third-row Stow 'n Go bench seat, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 7-inch touchscreen.

The LX trim adds more comforts, including softer suspension tuning, a power-adjustable driver's seat, second-row captain's chairs, three-zone climate control, and satellite radio. Several safety features (blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert) come with the optional SafetyTec package for both trims, while a roof rack, remote start, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are options for the LX.

2020 Chrysler Voyager Overview

Is the 2020 chrysler voyager a good used minivan.

Yes, the 2020 Chrysler Voyager is a good used minivan . But it just isn’t as profound or exciting as its rivals. The Voyager was created from the lower trims of the Chrysler Pacifica and is the more budget-friendly of the two. The Voyager boasts good safety scores and a fairly comfortable cabin, but there are classmates worth checking out. The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid boasts better mpg ratings and a more luxurious cabin than the Voyager. Another alternative to consider is the 2020 Honda Odyssey , which has a bit more cargo space than the Voyager and wields impressive and enjoyable handling.

Which Used Chrysler Voyager Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2020 Chrysler Voyager comes in two trims: L and LX. The base L trim should satisfy most shoppers. The Voyager comes standard with a good amount of tech and infotainment features, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The LX trim has a few more add-ons, such as a rear DVD player, heated front seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and remote start. Notably, the second-row seats do not fold into the floor on either trim, but the Voyager does come standard with third-row Stow 'n Go seats.

The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica , the Voyager’s sibling, is worth checking out for its additional entertainment and safety features.

  • Chrysler Voyager L: The base L trim comes standard with cloth upholstery, second-row bench seats, a rearview camera, and remote keyless entry. It also features a Uconnect infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, a USB port, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a six-speaker stereo. You might find some models with rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and/or tri-zone automatic climate control.
  • Chrysler Voyager LX: The LX trim gains an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, two second-row bucket seats, in-floor storage bins for the second row, and satellite radio. You might find some models with tri-zone automatic climate control, a rear DVD player, heated front seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and/or remote start.

What Does Chrysler's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Chrysler has a certified pre-owned program for vehicles less than six years old and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Buyers get the balance of the seven-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. They also receive a three-month, 3,000-mile maximum care warranty that covers most major components and is good from the date you purchase your CPO Chrysler. If your CPO Chrysler has any of the original three-year, 36,000-mile new-vehicle warranty remaining, the maximum care warranty kicks in when the new-car warranty expires. Chrysler CPO vehicles must pass a 125-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and 24-hour roadside assistance may be available.

Chrysler has one of the worst CPO programs among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford, Honda and Mazda are all better.

Extended Warranties for Chrysler Cars and Minivans

Not every used Chrysler will qualify for a certified pre-owned warranty. However, there are options available if you want additional coverage after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired.

2020 Chrysler Voyager Versus the Competition

2020 chrysler voyager vs. 2020 chrysler pacifica.

The Voyager and Pacifica are both minivans produced by Chrysler, but the Pacifica ups the ante when it comes to options and a lavish cabin. The Voyager is a product of lower Pacifica trims, which means they have some commonalities, including the same 287-horsepower V6 engine and similar gas mileage ratings. However, the Pacifica is available with all-wheel drive, which cannot be found in the Voyager and many other minivans . Other options found only in the Pacifica are forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a 20-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. If you don’t need AWD or some of the features available in the Pacifica, the Voyager remains a decent choice.

Compare the Voyager and Pacifica »

2020 Chrysler Pacifica vs. 2020 Honda Odyssey

The highly ranked 2020 Honda Odyssey is a great option. The Odyssey has more cargo space and a higher-quality cabin than the Voyager, and it has spacious and comfortable seating in all three rows. The Odyssey also boasts a smooth ride and composed handling. These two have similar gas mileage ratings, and neither offer all-wheel drive. Overall, the Odyssey is the better pick, but the Voyager isn’t a bad choice either.

How Many People Does the 2020 Voyager Seat?

The 2020 Voyager seats seven people in three rows in its standard setup. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, but the second and third rows aren’t as impressive as those found in rivals. The second row isn’t very spacious, and the third row is tight and best suited for children.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Third-row Stow ‘n Go seats
  • Second-row bench seat

Available seating features:

  • Heated front seats
  • Eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat

On the plus side, the dashboard features physical knobs for the climate control and audio functions, and they’re easy to use while driving.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo

2020 Chrysler Voyager review: Our expert's take

By Aaron Bragman

chrysler voyager 2020 01 angle blue exterior front jpg

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is bringing back a name from its past (or overseas, if you happen to live outside the U.S.) to adorn a new version of its Pacifica minivan. The popular and multiple-award-winning Pacifica will see its lower trim levels split off onto a new nameplate — the 2020 Chrysler Voyager — while the most premium levels continue on under the Pacifica badge.

Related: Chrysler Pacifica Still (Mostly) Pleases 2 Years Into Ownership

The new Voyager will come in three flavors, all at the lower end of the trim spectrum, designed to cater to people who need to ferry seven people but also need to do it on a budget. The L, LX, and LXi trims will be available, with that last one being sold to fleets and rental car companies only. They will replace the Pacifica L and LX models, and the Pacifica will now be only sold in Touring, Touring L, Touring L Plus, S and Limited models.

The Bare Necessities — And Not Much Else

What do you get at the low end of the spectrum? You get a spacious van with standard seven-passenger seating, a disappearing fold-away third row, a powerful 3.6-liter V-6 making 287 horsepower mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Seats are cloth except in the fleet-only LXi and can be had in black, beige or gray. Options packages are limited: The base Voyager L can be had with an all-weather interior protection package or a safety package with a blind spot monitor and rear park assist with automatic stop, while the LX adds an optional Cold Weather Group Package with a heated leather steering wheel.

The multimedia system isn’t bad — it’s a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the latest Uconnect 4, which includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto . Climate control is manual, as are the seats (power driver’s seat is standard on the LX and LXi), headlights, sliding side doors and rear liftgate.

If you want creature comforts, Chrysler suggests you head upmarket to the Pacifica, with all of its myriad bells and whistles. If you’re just needing very basic, comfortable, quiet transportation for seven, the Voyager is now your go-to option.

How’s It Feel?

The remarkable thing about the Voyager is that it feels every bit as nice as a more expensive, better-equipped Pacifica. The interior content is decidedly lesser, but the material quality isn’t — the dash, doors, and seats all still feel quite nice. In a quick spin around FCA’s Chelsea Proving Grounds just west of Detroit, it proved to be powerful and quiet, featuring a six-speaker audio system and still retaining the Pacifica’s active noise cancellation function that helps quiet the cavernous cabin. Yes, everything is manual in the Voyager — opening and closing the doors, adjusting the seats, etc. There are no LED headlamps. The 7-inch touchscreen feels a little on the small side if you’re used to Chrysler’s 8.4-inch model. But it has all the basic amenities you could want, if only just.

How Much Does It Cost?

No official pricing was given for the new 2020 Voyager, but a spokesperson on hand said that the automaker is aiming to bring the base model in at just less than $27,000, not including a destination charge (which currently sits at $1,495 for the 2019 Pacifica and is unlikely to be less for 2020). This would be just a bit less than the 2019 Pacifica’s starting price of $28,730, including destination, so it looks like Chrysler is still aiming for getting the van out the showroom door for just under $30,000.

In comparison, the 2019 Honda Odyssey starts at $31,285 including destination, and a 2020 Toyota Sienna costs a minimum of $32,510, but a 2019 Kia Sedona matches the Voyager at $28,245 ( see them compared with the Pacifica ). The Voyager’s base price is still a lot of scratch for any new vehicle, but it’s a pretty good deal for a very comfortable seven-passenger people-hauler. You’ll be able to find the new 2020 Chrysler Voyager in dealerships in September.

Chrysler voyager do not buy.

This vehicle has many issues, I changed out all the spark plugs did so much other work for this vehicle and it’s doing the same problems it jerks it’s been doing that ever since I got the vehicle. Every time I take it to the dealership they claim there’s nothing wrong, but I’m beginning to believe that there is something wrong. I’m beginning to believe that there is a defect in the transmission or the engineor and also possible defect and electric components the dealership did not honor my position when I had my warranty and now that my warranty is expired because I’m over the miles I have to pay in my own pocket to get a lot of these things to fix but even though I spent so much money fixing this car, the same problem still occurs

Meets my needs. Wish the back wings opened. Needs more USB ports. One thing I really don't like is the fact the engine shuts off when stopped for traffic lights.

Here's What Made The Plymouth Voyager III Concept Car So Unique

Despite appearances, the Plymouth Voyager III was meant to be a much more practical and sedate affair.

The Plymouth Voyager III Concept was Chrysler’s bold but ill-conceived attempt to re-invent the MPV/minivan.

Depending on how you viewed it, the Voyager III Concept either looked like something Gerry Anderson might have dreamed up for his '60s TV sci-fi series Thunderbirds  or an unfortunate GEO Metro that had been brutally rear-ended by an MPV.

Either way, the vehicle was billed as the future of the minivan when it was unveiled at the 1990 North American Auto Show in Chicago.

The concept was the brainchild of designer Tom Gale, the man later credited for conceiving two of the most daring American supercars of the 1990s decade: the Dodge Viper and the Plymouth Prowler .

Despite appearances, the Plymouth Voyager III was meant to be a much more practical and sedate affair, a crossover for families intending to size down to one vehicle and thereby save on gas/petrol. Or to quote Chrysler’s blurb: a socially responsible vehicle-within-a-vehicle to tackle fuel consumption, traffic congestion, and global warming. Yes, they were talking about it even then.

Let's take a closer look at the Plymouth Voyager III.

RELATED: 23 Concept Cars Chrysler Surprised The World With In The 90s

The Plymouth Voyager III Concept Car low-down

The four-axle minivan featured an innovative, forward cab design uncoupled from the larger rear section and transformed into a two-door, three-seater car.

RELATED:  Crazy Minivan Render: Chrysler Pacifica Hellcat

Before separating, the cab’s rear wheels were retracted into the body of the trailer, neatly hidden by glorified fender skirts or spats. When the two sections detached, the cab’s rear wheels were lowered electronically.

The front-wheel-drive car was powered by a 1.5 four-pot, which was more than sufficient for its needs. However, as the unit would have struggled to tow the rest of the ensemble, the rear section boasted its own powertrain. This was a 2.2 liter turbo that was connected electronically to the smaller engine. By working in unison through a four-speed auto, there was 250 bhp on tap.

There was even a rear-facing TV screen to help the driver line up both vehicles when docking.

The entire five-meter long vehicle could seat a total of eight people, including the driver, and with the advantage of a modular setup, it could include a flat-bed pick-up or boat trailer, although there is no evidence that these were ever built or tested, so it’s impossible to know how they would have looked.

The Plymouth Voyager III Offered A Solution To A Problem That Didn’t Exist

This, at least, was the idea on paper. When Bob Lutz, the then president of Chrysler, tried to explain the ethos behind the car, he was quoted as saying: "You see people going into downtown areas in full-size vans wasting fuel and clogging up space.

“It seemed to us like a neat idea to be able to leave two-thirds of your vehicle at home." He might have added that drivers would also have needed to leave two-thirds of their family behind. Oh well.

The problem was that the Voyager III concept was a solution to a problem that didn’t exist. A three-seat cab co-joined to a five-seat passenger compartment? Why didn’t we think of it before?

Chrysler proclaimed that the vehicle was “the best of both worlds” without truly clarifying what those worlds might be.

Nagging problem of cargo space

For one thing, while the company boasted that the car had “generous cargo space”, no photos were ever released showing luggage capacity, certainly not for a family of eight or more, an oversight which would no doubt have put off potential buyers and deterred drivers from undertaking long road trips.

And given that the more mundane MPVs/minivans available at the time already suffered from limited cargo space, it appears that Chrysler’s designers had missed a golden opportunity to address the problem.

From the promotional videos of the time, you’re also left with a nagging impression that the designers hadn’t thought of what would happen to the rear section when the forward cab drove off into the sunset, as the inside compartment was left exposed (it did not appear to have a sealing mechanism). This meant the rear section would have had to have been securely locked away in a garage once detached from the rest of the vehicle.

The ‘Mother-In-Law’ module Of The Plymouth Voyager III

It certainly didn’t help the car’s prospects when industry insiders unkindly dubbed the rear section as ‘the mother-in-law’ module. Offloading irksome relatives was surely not in the designer’s brief and not what Chrysler had intended when it claimed that its mini-van concept would “meet a variety of family needs”.

The project was swiftly killed off due to development costs, as the technology available at the time would have made it prohibitively expensive to build.

The fact that no other manufacturer has taken up the challenge of creating anything remotely like the Voyager III Concept since then - the Mini Vision Urbanaut being a case in point - also speaks volumes about the wisdom of embarking on such a project. Mothers-in-law everywhere can at least breathe a sigh of relief.

18-year-old charged with vehicular homicide in crash that killed a woman and 3 children in a van

SEATTLE — An 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with four counts of vehicular homicide for allegedly causing a four-car crash in a Seattle suburb that killed a woman and three children in her van, online jail records indicate.

Chase Daniel Jones was taken into custody late Friday and was being held on $1 million bail, according to the King County Correctional Facility records.

The jail records listed the charges and bail but did not indicate an attorney who could speak on Jones’ behalf, and the case did not appear in online King County court records Saturday.

Killed in the Tuesday crash in Renton were Andrea Smith Hudson, 38; Matilda Wilcoxson, 13; and Eloise Wilcoxson and Boyd B. Brown, both 12, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The crash also resulted in four others being taken to the hospital, including two of Hudson’s children who were also in the van. They remained hospitalized on Saturday, the Seattle Times reported .

Officials said Jones was also injured, and he had been under guard at the hospital until his release and arrest.

Jones also faces two counts of vehicular assault and one count of reckless driving.

The Voyager spacecraft will probably last a billion years, says a scientist on the mission for nearly 5 decades

  • Alan Cummings has worked on the Voyager mission for over 50 years.
  • Since their launch, the two Voyager spacecraft have made breakthrough discoveries that keep Cummings engaged.
  • Cummings thinks they will continue traveling for a billion years.

Insider Today

The twin Voyager spacecraft launched almost five decades ago, and there's no reason they shouldn't keep going for a billion years, one of its scientists, Alan Cummings told Business Insider.

Cummings started working on the Voyager mission when he was a graduate student at Caltech in 1973, about four years before the two spacecraft launched.

Now a senior research scientist at Caltech, Cummings has seen the program dwindle from over 300 people to fewer than a dozen.

Voyagers 1 and 2 have traveled over 10 billion miles into space, further than any human-made object. Cummings said being a part of this historic mission for so many decades has been the backbone of his career.

"The Hubble Telescope is a great mission," he said. " JWST is a great mission, but I think Voyager's in that kind of category."

Voyagers' endurance

The Voyager mission has been gathering groundbreaking data and photos since the beginning.

The first time Cummings saw Jupiter's moon Io in 1979, for example, he thought it was a joke. "It looked like a poorly made pizza," he said.

Its colorful, volcano-covered surface looked so different from Earth's gray, pockmarked moon . "This can't be real," he said, "and it was real."

The Voyagers offered us a new perspective on our outer solar system, unlike anything we could have imagined.

They discovered Saturn wasn't the only planet with rings — Jupiter has them too. They revealed new moons around Jupiter and Saturn.

In total, the two spacecraft snapped 67,000 images of our solar system, the final of which was the "pale blue dot" photo made famous by Carl Sagan who said:

"To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world."

"It rewrote the textbooks," Cummings said of the mission.

Both Voyagers were initially planned as five-year missions, but Cummings said, from the beginning, he expected the spacecraft to last at least 30 to 40 years.

Related stories

"A remarkable engineering team has kept this thing going," Cummings said.

Now, as the two spacecraft approach their 50th anniversaries, they're running low on fuel.

Engineers have had to shut down different instruments to keep them going and the data coming in.

Cummings said once the Voyagers lose power and communication, they'll continue traveling. "I think it's going to go for a billion years," he said. "There's nothing to stop it."

Joining Voyager

If it weren't for an unfortunate accident, Cummings may never have joined the Voyager mission.

Before Voyager, Cummings was part of an experiment to measure cosmic rays using a balloon.

For several summers, he had released the balloon from northern Manitoba, Canada.

But during its final flight, the balloon didn't descend as expected and ended up over Russia, instead.

By the time Cummings got to Russia, the instrument was destroyed.

"It was very fortunate for me," he said, because he was able to then join the Voyager mission.

He put his cosmic ray experience to use, working on telescopes for the mission's experiments.

"I have my little initials scratched on one of those" telescopes he said, "so I guess I'm going to be immortal."

Interstellar space

Cummings has worked on other projects over the decades, but Voyagers' continual transmission of new data has kept him excited and involved.

"There's always some new phenomenon that you see," he said.

In fact, Voyager's data has become increasingly more interesting to Cummings in recent years because the two spacecraft are now in interstellar space , the region of space beyond our sun's influence.

After passing by the four giant planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus, many of the instruments were still in working order. So, the spacecraft transitioned to an interstellar mission.

In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first human-made spacecraft to enter interstellar space and Voyager 2 followed six years later.

"That is really what I was most interested in anyway," Cummings said, since cosmic rays are his field of expertise and in interstellar space, those rays aren't disrupted by the sun, Earth, and other obstructions in our solar system.

Voyager is "making its most interesting measurements in some ways right now," he said.

Currently, Voyager 1 is having issues with one of its onboard computers that could compromise the mission.

Cummings hopes the Voyagers can hang on a little longer, especially since interstellar space is a long way off for any other spacecraft.

10 times star trek: voyager didn't hit the reset button.

Ongoing Delta Quadrant adventures and long character arcs prove Star Trek: Voyager didn't always hit the reset button after every episode.

  • Voyager's single-episode stories occasionally led to serialized character arcs and plot developments over the seven seasons.
  • Seska's spy storyline intertwined with the Kazon's power struggle against Voyager, creating layered conflict in the series.
  • Seven of Nine's journey towards humanity, and the Doctor's self-discovery, highlighted the growth of holograms as individuals.

There are times when Star Trek: Voyager didn't actually hit the so-called "reset button", as the series was prone to doing at the end of most of its standalone episodes. Over the course of its seven-year journey through the Delta Quadrant, Voyager excelled at delivering stories that generally wrapped up all major plot points within a single, self-contained episode , with the occasional 2-part Star Trek: Voyager episode occurring roughly twice per season. This was a stark contrast to the ongoing drama of the contemporaneous Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , which favored serialized storytelling to a much higher degree than Star Trek had previously.

Despite Voyager 's proclivity for single-episode stories, Star Trek: Voyager doesn't avoid serialization entirely. There's a through line that carries through Voyager 's seven seasons regarding the way characters act and respond to one another and new situations, as the main characters of Star Trek: Voyager learn to adjust to their changing circumstances, with new friends and enemies, and new developments to ongoing problems. Sometimes, plot arcs continue through several episodes, and although they can be watched individually, they make more sense when watched in order.

Star Trek: Voyager’s 20 Best Episodes Ranked

10 the uss voyager vs. seska & the kazon, the kazon and seska are voyager's first challenge in star trek: voyager seasons 1 & 2..

The Kazon are Star Trek: Voyager 's first big bad but aren't half as interesting as classic antagonists like Klingons or Romulans. The different Kazon sects are intended to echo warring gang factions, but the Kazon's internal discord does little to pose an actual threat to the USS Voyager's crew. Meanwhile, one of Voyager 's recurring crew members, Ensign Seska (Martha Hackett), fans the flames of dissent between Voyager's Maquis and Starfleet crews, until Seska reveals herself to be a Cardassian spy who may or may not be carrying Commander Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) baby.

The soapy intrigue of the Seska storyline converges with the Kazon posturing against Voyager for dominance in their own corner of space, as Seska infiltrates the paper-thin Kazon hierarchy in a bid for power in the sector . With the Kazon-Nistrim wrapped around her finger, Seska's coup on the USS Voyager culminates in Star Trek : Voyager's season 3 opener, "Basics, Part 2", and ends there ... at least until Seska's holographic parting gift is activated in Voyager season 3, episode 25, "Worst Case Scenario", nearly a year later.

9 Kes Develops Ocampa Powers

Jennifer lien's kes grows stronger telepathy in star trek: voyager seasons 2 & 3..

The USS Voyager picks up some Delta Quadrant natives to guide the first leg of their journey, the romantic pairing Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and Kes (Jennifer Lien). The Talaxian trader Neelix becomes the USS Voyager's chef and morale officer, while Ocampa Kes fits right in as assistant to the Doctor (Robert Picardo). Kes is kind and ingenuous, but there's little else for Kes to do in Voyager 's first season, so in Voyager season 2, Kes' telepathic powers develop.

Kes' telepathy leads to telekinesis, which grows beyond the Ocampan's control.

Kes' powers grow rapidly, aided by meeting other Ocampa who have mastered their abilities in Voyager season 2, episode 10, "Cold Fire". Aboard the USS Voyager, Kes trains with Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ) to help Kes control her powers even though Tuvok's Vulcan telepathy operates differently from Ocampa talents. Kes' telepathy leads to telekinesis, which grows beyond the Ocampan's control, so to keep Voyager's crew safe, Kes must leave in Voyager season 4 , episode 2, "The Gift."

8 Tom Paris & B'Elanna Torres' Romance

Tom & b'elanna's relationship evolves in star trek: voyager seasons 3 - 7..

The romance between Lieutenants Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) and B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) isn't planned, but instead evolves from the characters' chemistry with each other. Tom and B'Elanna play off of each other well in their earliest scenes together , and develop a friendship that manages to break through the ways that both Paris and Torres use to avoid getting close to people. B'Elanna sees through Tom's casual charm just as easily as Tom sees through B'Elanna's intentional hostility, and it turns out they have a lot in common.

Paris and Torres are one of the best Star Trek romances .

The Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres romance grows over the course of Voyager 's entire run, from their initial meeting to their marriage, and the birth of their daughter, Miral. The relationship softens both Tom and B'Elanna , who learn to accept love from each other, despite difficult relationships with their parents making them feel unworthy of it. Paris and Torres are one of the best Star Trek romances , and a great part of Voyager 's subtle serialization.

7 Captain Janeway vs. The Borg

Voyager survives the scorpion's sting in star trek: voyager seasons 4 - 7..

Unlike other Delta Quadrant species, Captain Janeway knows what she's getting into by engaging the Borg . Rather than avoid the Borg entirely, as Chakotay suggests, Janeway faces the Borg head-on, making a deal exchanging safe passage through Borg space for Voyager's help fighting Species 8472, who can't be assimilated. The Borg Queen (Susanna Thompson, Alice Krige) and her drones become Janeway's true nemesis through repeated encounters, with each one stacking on the last before Admiral Janeway from the future and the Queen face off in a final battle.

Captain Janeway's tension with the Borg is also exemplified in Janeway's relationship with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). In Janeway and Seven of Nine's best Voyager episodes , Janeway's insistence on Seven's humanity regularly clashes with Seven's own connections to the Collective , in a one-step-forward, two-steps-back progression that nonetheless moves forward, resembling how people escape toxic systems or overcome addiction far more than a strictly linear telling would.

Janeway Was The Borg’s Greatest Enemy, Not Picard

6 letters from home, hope comes in the form of a relay station in star trek: voyager season 4..

The discovery of an abandoned subspace relay station kicks off a story arc that connects the USS Voyager with Federation space in Star Trek: Voyager season 4 . By using the station, Voyager's crew can finally send and receive messages from the Alpha Quadrant , letting their loved ones know they're alive, but stranded. The initial messages are few and far between, sent only when certain conditions make it possible, and these infrequent missives find their way into the crew's hands in a few Voyager season 4 episodes, while setting up the upcoming Hirogen arc as well as Voyager season 6's Pathfinder Project.

Contact with family and friends after four years in the Delta Quadrant reveals a lot about Voyager 's characters. Many, like Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) , are excited at the prospect of an early return, while some, like Paris and Torres, are less enthused about reuniting with estranged family members, or face Federation judgment after crimes committed as members of the Maquis.

The promise of letters from home is the driving force behind Voyager season 4's finale "Hope and Fear", which also calls back to Star Trek: Voyager season 4's opening, "Scorpion, Part 2", with the consequences of defeating Species 8472 finally coming to bear.

5 The USS Voyager vs. the Hirogen

The nomadic hunters appear throughout star trek: voyager season 4 - 7..

The predatory Hirogen come calling as owners of the relay station after discovering that the USS Voyager's crew have been using it to communicate with the Alpha Quadrant. The concept of "the hunt" is central to Hirogen culture, which sorts alien species according to their worthiness as prey. Despite their initial reservations, the Hirogen deem Voyager's crew particularly interesting targets , between Voyager's ability to subdue the villainous Species 8472 even when the Borg have failed to do so, and Federation holographic technology that makes the Hirogen's sacred hunt more exciting than it has been in years.

Each Hirogen episode lays the groundwork for the next one, and the overall Hirogen arc sets up at least two other separate storylines that emerge from the consequences, with Janeway's gift of hologram technology playing into Star Trek: Voyager season 7's hologram rights arc, and the Hirogen relay station kicking off the domino effect of contact with the Alpha Quadrant, the Pathfinder Project, and the USS Voyager's eventual return home.

4 Seven of Nine Becomes More Human

From star trek: voyager season 4 - 7, seven of nine adapts..

Seven of Nine's character arc is perhaps the most important in all of Star Trek: Voyager because Seven's development after being liberated from the Borg Collective practically requires a serialized progression in order to work. Seven of Nine initially resists Janeway's insistence that Seven is human , and an individual, but that resistance plays out like a teenager's; in order to discover her own identity, Seven must first rebel against authority, so she can learn how to define herself for herself.

Seven of Nine finds the balance between individuality and a new collective aboard Voyager.

Seven's humanity is revealed slowly, realistically, with new information that comes to light about Seven's pre-assimilation life as Annika Hansen, Annika's scientist parents, and the Borg Queen's proposal to Seven of Nine to return to the Collective. By rejecting the Queen, Seven of Nine truly chooses herself , in a stark contrast to the desires of the drone who begged for the Collective. With help from friends like the Doctor (Robert Picardo), Seven of Nine finds the balance between individuality and a new collective aboard Voyager.

3 Icheb and the Borg Kids

Juvenile borg drones are liberated in star trek: voyager season 6..

In Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 16, "Collective," the USS Voyager encounters young Borg drones operating their own Cube after being cut off from the larger Collective. After rescuing the drones, it would have been easy to simply forget the Borg kids, but this far into the series, the small liberated Collective of children become recurring characters on Voyager . Icheb (Manu Intiraymi) is the eldest, followed by Mezoti (Marley S. McClean), and twins Azan (Kurt Wetherill) and Rebi (Cody Wetherill).

Naomi Wildman (Scarlett Pomers) , the only other child aboard the USS Voyager, is quick to befriend these newfound peers. Already a friend to Naomi, Seven of Nine develops a maternal relationship with the liberated drones, and Icheb in particular . Taking a page from Janeway and the Doctor, Seven instructs the children on how to discover their individuality, and learns how to take care of other people who rely on her for guidance.

Who Is Icheb? Star Trek: Picard’s Surprise Voyager Return Explained

2 the pathfinder project, reginald barclay returns in star trek: voyager seasons 6 & 7..

A few years after the discovery of the subspace relay station that allows Voyager to communicate with the Alpha Quadrant, Voyager catches up with Star Trek: The Next Generation 's own Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) , who has immersed himself in the Pathfinder Project. The Pathfinder Project's aim is to find a way to bring the USS Voyager home quickly , and to do so, Barclay has created a holographic version of Voyager's crew based on reports received from the Delta Quadrant in Voyager season 4's "Letters from home" arc.

While Reg's hyperfocus on the Voyager simulation shares some similarities with Barclay's disordered holodeck use on TNG , Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) returns to ensure that Barclay doesn't take it too far this time. Instead of contributing to Barclay's maladaptive daydreaming, the Pathfinder Project and Barclay's holographic friends lead to an actual solution.

1 The Doctor's Arc of Self-Actualization

Throughout star trek: voyager's entire run, the emh proves that holograms are people, too,.

After years of buildup, the Doctor's character arc comes to a head when Star Trek: Voyager season 7's recurring theme is the rights of holograms as photonic life forms. The Doctor's exploration of humanity in Voyager 's early seasons, prompted by Kes' friendship, leads to experimentation with additions to his program, like hobbies, new skills, and even a family. With the addition of a mobile emitter in Voyager season 3, the Doctor is no longer confined to sickbay and the holodeck, and the Doctor's emotional horizons begin to broaden as widely as his physical ones.

By Voyager season 7, the Doctor demands agency for holograms by fighting prejudices against photonic beings.

Each subsequent season of Star Trek: Voyager expands on the Doctor's character, introducing new friendships, like Seven of Nine, and new challenges, like encountering other photonic life forms, that give the Doctor reason to reflect on the nature of his own existence. The Doctor learns how to stand up for himself as a person , owed the same rights and privileges as any other member of Voyager 's crew. By Voyager season 7, the Doctor demands agency for holograms by fighting prejudices against photonic beings, calling out the mistreatment of holograms, and asserting his rights as an author.

Much like in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Voyager 's serialization is the result of consequences influencing what happens next. Engaging the Borg introduces Seven's arc towards individuality, which in turn influences character development for the Doctor and Janeway. The discovery of the abandoned relay station catches the attention of the Hirogen, dovetailing with the hologram rights storyline later, while also facilitating the letters from home. The letters trigger character development for B'Elanna, Tom, and their relationship, and later introduce the Pathfinder project. It may be subtle, but Star Trek: Voyager doesn't always hit the reset button.

Patriots' Wolf, Van Pelt: 4 Quarterbacks on Pro Day Circuit

  • Author: Ralph Ventre

In this story:

New England Patriots

The offseason signs all point to the arrival of a new franchise quarterback for the New England Patriots.

First, they cut ties with former first-round draft pick Mac Jones, sending the quarterback to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Next, New England signed veteran Jacoby Brissett . Returning to the team that drafted him at No. 91 overall in 2016, the 31-year-old Brissett brings stability to the position as a bridge quarterback.

Now, it's up to Patriots' brass to identify the future franchise quarterback and use the No. 3 overall draft pick to secure his services. Sports Illustrated senior writer Albert Breer's latest report suggests New England is trying to make it happen.

Citing sources, Breer said a three-person Patriots' contingent is on the ground at USC's Pro Day on Wednesday to evaluate Caleb Williams, who has been projected as the No. 1 choice amongst a strong quarterback class.

QB Caleb Williams

© Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Following the stop in Southern California, de facto general manager Eliot Wolf, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterbacks coach TC McCartney will reportedly attend Friday's Michigan Pro Day. Head coach Jerod Mayo is expected to join the trio to watch rising prospect JJ McCarthy.

Breer said the intention is for all four sets of eyes to be present next week at LSU and North Carolina Pro Days. Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels has been a popular pick for the Patriots across multiple notable mock drafts.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah paired Daniels with New England in the third edition of his projections . North Carolina's Drake Maye was unavailable to the Patriots, having gone to the Washington Commanders at No. 2 overall. The first four players off the board were all quarterbacks in Jeremiah's latest simulation.

Waiting for Draft? Patriots Yet to Add Offensive Difference-maker

With a franchise-defining decision looming, the Patriots are doing their homework on the top-four quarterback prospects. They'll have the chance to choose between two of them when making their first-round selection on draft night in Detroit.

TAMPA, Fla. — It’s possible the Boston Bruins will play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. If so, both teams should have more matches to burn than they did Wednesday.

The Lightning were playing at home for the first time since concluding a five-game romp through Florida, Nevada and California. The Bruins were coming off a spirited come-from-behind tilt against the Florida Panthers the previous night.

It is no wonder neither team had its best stuff. The Lightning had just a bit more than the Bruins to score the 3-1 win.

“There was a lot of emotion in that game,” coach Jim Montgomery said of Tuesday’s 4-3 win over the Panthers. “The physical product also contributes. You win a big game like that, you’re sky-high. Then we’ve got to come back and play an elite team in the league again. It’s just a hard schedule.”

Danton Heinen scored the Bruins’ only goal. David Pastrnak triggered the sequence with a firm forecheck on Matt Dumba . Because Pastrnak arrived on time, Dumba had to get rid of the puck before he got planted into the end boards. Pavel Zacha intercepted the clearing attempt and found Heinen in the slot for his 15th goal. It was more proof that Pastrnak creates offense by using his muscle, not just his sublime skill.

But there was no more offense to come. The Bruins were 0 for 2 on the power play. Pastrnak and Brad Marchand , the Bruins’ two best wings, had only two shots on net each.

“Tough game. Tough loss,” Pastrnak said. “Didn’t deserve to win today. The power play and six-on-five, we have to be much better than that. It’s on us, the guys who are out there in those times.”

The loss allowed the Bruins to accumulate more data about how to roll their lineup in Game 1 of the playoffs, whether it’s against the Lightning or not. Linus Ullmark (28 saves on 30 shots) continued to make his case to get the net to start the postseason. Ullmark didn’t have much of a chance to deny Mitchell Chaffee ’s opening goal. The goalie didn’t get enough help from Andrew Peeke to stop Brayden Point ’s far-post goal in the second. Nikita Kucherov finished the night with an empty net goal.

Since the March 8 trade deadline, Ullmark has a .939 save percentage over five appearances. Jeremy Swayman has an .850 save percentage (four starts) in the same segment.

If the Bruins continue their rotation through Game 82, Ullmark is scheduled for four more starts. Swayman will also have opportunities to straighten out his game and contend for postseason work.

“Linus did a really good job,” Montgomery said. “I thought he was square, sound. I thought he handled pucks well, too.”

Ullmark is trending in the right direction. James van Riemsdyk is not.

Perhaps the final forward spot up for grabs is No. 3 left wing. Jakub Lauko , who played 8:57 against the Panthers, was a healthy scratch Wednesday. Van Riemsdyk, out of uniform Tuesday, was back in against the Lightning next to Morgan Geekie and Trent Frederic .

Van Riemsdyk did not do enough with his opportunity. Before Chaffee’s goal, van Riemsdyk lost a board battle to Victor Hedman , which allowed the Lightning to gain possession. Moments later, van Riemsdyk was late to cover Chaffee in the slot.

Later in the first period, van Riemsdyk took a holding penalty in the offensive zone when he was late to forecheck Chaffee. The veteran played only 9:37, second least to Jesper Boqvist (9:08). Van Riemsdyk did not have a shot on goal.

On defense, Montgomery adjusted his second and third pairs. Peeke, who had played on the No. 3 duo since arriving from the Columbus Blue Jackets , was promoted to second-pair duty next to Hampus Lindholm . Brandon Carlo played with Parker Wotherspoon on the No. 3 pairing.

Montgomery had been deploying Lindholm and Carlo as his shutdown tandem. But they have not been as stout as the Bruins would prefer. In their last eight games together, the Lindholm-Carlo duo has been on for nine goals against and only four goals for, per Natural Stat Trick.

Peeke played 18:51 against the Lightning. He recorded two shots, three blocks and three hits. Carlo, who struggled against the Panthers, played only 15:29 on Wednesday. He entered the night averaging 20:05 of ice time per game.

“New team, new system, new players, obviously,” Peeke said. “But for me personally, building that momentum, building that confidence on a nightly basis, it’s all I can do. All I have to do is get ready for that next one when the opportunity is there.”
