My 6 Favorites Dishes I Tried On Dublin’s Secret Food Tour

  • Food and Drink

It is no secret that Dublin, Ireland, has a vibrant and popular pub culture, but did you know it is also a foodie’s paradise? It’s true! Whether you want to indulge in traditional staples like Irish stew and fish and chips, or visit a five-star Michelin restaurant, Dublin has you covered.

One of my favorite ways to explore an area’s food is to participate in a food tour; luckily, Dublin offers many options. After extensive research, I decided to take a Secret Food Tour in Dublin, and I was glad I did! Dublin’s Secret Food Tour allowed me to taste some incredible food, and I learned loads of history about Dublin and made some new friends!

Before I introduce you to some of the yummy dishes I tried on my Dublin food tour, the stops on the tour may have changed. Please visit the Secret Food Tour website for the latest tour information. Let’s dive into my favorite dishes I tried while on Dublin’s Secret Food Tour (foods are listed in no particular order).

I was gifted a tour by Secret Food Tours, but, as always, all opinions are my own.

Traditional Irish breakfast from Kilkenny Design

1. Traditional Irish Breakfast

Kilkenny design.

From the outside, Kilkenny Design looks like a design store, so I wouldn’t have ever thought to venture inside for a good meal. When our tour guide stopped in front of it, I assumed he would just give us information about the neighborhood. To my surprise, this was the first stop on our food tour. As we ventured inside and went up the stairs, we were greeted with a bustling little café full of delicious smells and happy-looking people.

The first dish we received on the tour was a traditional Irish breakfast. The dish consisted of potato cakes, brasher (ham for my American friends), white pudding, and fried tomatoes. Having tasted the other items before, I was most excited to try the white pudding since it was new to me. White pudding is a meat dish that consists of fat, oatmeal, or barley with breadcrumbs, spices, and in some recipes, pork and/or pork liver. These ingredients are combined, filled into a natural or cellulose sausage casing, and then cooked.

I couldn’t believe the size of the portions. Reminding myself that this was our first stop, I decided to pace myself and only eat a few bites of each item. I must admit, though, this was hard as the food was so good!

Authentic Irish stew with a pint of beer

2. Irish Stew

The hairy lemon.

My first taste of traditional Irish Stew took place on the Secret Food Tour while visiting a fabulous Irish pub named The Hairy Lemon . The Hairy Lemon is a quintessential Irish pub right in the heart of Dublin . There are random, fun decorations hanging all about and televisions showing sporting events throughout the bar. People are laughing and the beer is flowing! The wood paneling and cozy tables enhanced the lively atmosphere of the Hairy Lemon and made me just want to sit and stay a while.

When my Irish stew arrived, I was greeted with a steamy bowl of thick, hearty stew full of chunks of meat and vegetables. The dish was accompanied by a slice of Irish soda bread perfect for dipping. Compared to an American stew, the Irish stew had a thicker consistency. In addition, lamb meat was used instead of beef, which resulted in a richer flavor. I have read that some Irish stews can also be made with mutton (mature sheep). I did not try the mutton, so I cannot speak to its taste. If you are not sure if the stew you are getting is made with lamb or mutton, just ask your server.

3. Guinness Pie

Since my husband, Marty, and I were both participating in the food tour, I had the opportunity to share dishes with him during our visit to The Hairy Lemon. Marty ordered the Guinness pie. Having never heard of it, I was excited to try it!

Guinness pie is beef cooked in a savory gravy with vegetables and spices and then covered in pastry. I equated this dish to a delicious homemade pot pie. The crust was buttery and flaky, and the filling was flavorful. We paired ours with a big, fresh pint of Guinness beer , which was perfect. Honestly, I enjoyed the Guinness pie more than I did my stew. I highly recommend you try it!

Exterior of Leo Burdock

4. Fish & Chips

Leo burdock.

Leo Burdock began serving delicious food to the Dublin community in 1913. Its website says they would wrap their fish and chips in day-old newspapers when they first began. This fast food-style fish-and-chips tradition caught on quickly as the company became famous for having some of the best in the area. According to our guide, Cal, it is not uncommon for Burdock’s to have a line around the corner. (Cal added that it is well worth the wait, and the line usually moves quickly.)

The restaurant’s interior has a relaxed, nautical vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. Looking over the menu, I was surprised at the choices offered. Not only do they serve fish and chips, but Leo Burdock also offers a wide variety of other foods, such as chicken tenders, hamburgers, sausages, and smoked cod. They even have a kids’ menu that offers reasonably priced, child-friendly choices.

During our visit to Leo Burdock, our tour included tasting the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly cooked and piping hot! The batter was light and crisp, and the tender, flaky fish inside melted in your mouth. Of course, the chips (french fries for my Americans) were also perfectly cooked. I loved that the meal was wrapped in paper, making it easy to sit and eat on or transport with you on the go.

We have eaten a lot of fish and chips on our travels, and I have to admit, Leo Burdock’s might be some of the best we have ever tasted. With that in mind, you should add this dish to your list of things to eat in Dublin!

Michelle Snell enjoying Murphy's Ice Cream

5. Ice Cream

Murphy’s ice cream.

If you’re an ice cream lover, you should probably book a flight to Ireland right now. I don’t know what they do to their dairy products, but they are amazing, and this is especially true for their ice cream! Murphy’s Ice Cream has churned out delicious ice cream since 2000. According to their website , their goal is to “make memorable flavors that put a smile on your face.” The company prides itself on using only natural ingredients. There are “no colorings, flavorings, or powdered milk.” I guess that is why it tastes so good!

Stepping into the Murphy’s Ice Cream store in Dublin immediately made me smile. The building was small but charming, cute, and, best of all, the employees were all smiling and happy. The menu showcased their delightful flavors, including Dingle sea salt, Irish brown bread, chocolate, and butterscotch. They even have alcohol-infused flavors like chocolate whiskey infused with West Cork whiskey, and Micil Irish cream infused with Irish whiskey and Irish cream!

My favorite thing about Murphy’s is that they will let you sample the ice creams until you decide on a flavor you love! This was important to me as I had difficulty choosing a flavor. I finally settled on the Irish cream and Marty chose the chocolate. The Irish cream ice cream was so decadent and creamy. I equate it to eating a frozen Irish coffee. Marty’s chocolate was just as delicious. The smooth and rich chocolate flavor just melted in your mouth. The server at Murphy’s told me that they use one of the best cocoas in the world to make their chocolate ice cream, which gives it a distinct and rich chocolate taste. It was amazing! I loved Murphy’s ice cream so much that I ate it daily. We even found one on our day trip to Kilkenny !

Irish whiskey from Celtic Whiskey Shop & Wines On The Green

6. Irish Whiskey

Celtic whiskey shop & wines on the green.

I don’t know if Irish whiskey qualifies as a “dish,” but I just couldn’t write this without including it! During our Secret Food Tour, we had the opportunity to visit a charming little shop in Dublin named the Celtic Whiskey Shop & Wines on the Green. This shop, centrally located near St. Stephen’s Green, is worth stopping in Dublin.

The shop’s interior was warm and welcoming with wood paneling and hues of brown and green. One side of the shop contained wine for sale, and the other housed the whiskey. Our tour included tasting three Irish whiskeys: Teelings Whiskey, The Dubliner, and Tullamore Dew. All three were smooth and delicious, but my favorite was the Teelings. I liked it so much that we chose to tour the Teelings Whiskey Distillery after our food tour!

Pro Tip: Food Tours

I have participated in Secret Food Tours worldwide — including Dublin, Boston , and Rome — and one thing I have learned is that you will eat a lot of food! My top tip when participating in a tour is to wear comfortable clothing and to pace yourself.

Any excuse to eat food and I'm there. Especially when I'm travelling. The food scene in Dublin is growing at a rapid rate, with a lot of traditional dishes getting a more modern twist placed on them. Sometimes it's hard to tell where's best to eat, or even what kind of food you should try. That's why Secret Food Tou rs is the only walking tour you need to go on, especially if you're only in the city for 2 days like we were. Prices for the tour start at €59 per adult , and you can upgrade that to a drinks package if you want. The meeting point was right across the road from Trinity College , underneath a statue, so it was very easy to find. If you have an dietary requirements or food allergies, you can mention this at the time of booking and they'll be more than happy to accommodate you.

You get to stop at a number of different locations, and sample some of the best food Dublin has to offer . Now, it is a secret tour, meaning you don't know where you're going until you get there. Yes, I have posted photos of SOME of the food, but you have options to choose from on the day, so I'm not spoiling anything for you, I promise. I honestly never know what walking tour to go on when I'm travelling, so I usually end up not joining one. From now on, whatever city I visit I'm going to check if Secret Food Tours are there. Check out some of my photos from the tour below:

Street in Dublin with shops and bars Ireland

What better way to explore the streets of Dublin? We passed through a number of unique neighbourhoods during our food tour, and our guide gave us some helpful tips and advice on what restaurants and pubs to visit after the tour. One of the best things to do in Dublin is go on a walking tour, but it's even better when food is added to it.

Display of different breads in a bakery in Dublin Ireland

Mhm, fresh bread. I don't know about you but as soon as I can smell bread baking I head in that direction. This bakery was part of a larger food hall, which had a small cafe in it where we were given samples of Irish cheese and other snacks.

Two white puddings and potato square in a restaurant in Dublin Ireland

So this was my first time trying white pudding , and it wasn't that bad! I'm not a fan of black pudding, so I thought this would be similar. I was pleasantly surprised though, and it goes well with the potato cake . This was one of the fancier stops during our secret food tour, and we had the opportunity to do a little bit of shopping too.

Front display at a seafood restaurant in Dublin Ireland

This spot was really interesting. I sampled some food I normally wouldn't even go near, and didn't hate it. That's the best part of food tasting in Dublin in my opinion, getting to try food you normally wouldn't order, and not feeling bad if you don't end up liking it.

Beef and Guinness pie with a slice of bread in a pub in Dublin Ireland

Beef and Guinness pie . Because I obviously didn't get my fill of Guinness at the storehouse. The secret food tour gives you a great selection of traditional Irish food, and our guide gave us a lot of interesting history behind each of the dishes.

Selection of Whiskey in Dublin Ireland

Whiskey is easy to come by in Ireland, but this experience was very unique. At this stop we sampled a few different types of delicious Irish Whiskey and were told about the processes each of them go through during production. Don't feel bad if you don't like whiskey. I'm not a fan of it either, but I had a little sip of each of them just to say that I'd given them a try.

River Liffey on a cloudy day in Dublin Ireland

Isn't Dublin beautiful? As well as stopping at a number of different places to sample food and drinks, we also passed by some lovely spots in the city. The Temple Bar area is located just next to the River Liffey , so you might as well take a stroll along the river before heading for a pint or two.

Single ice cream cone in Dublin Ireland

I promise you'll scream for this ice cream. I'm an ice cream lover, so this stop was perfect for me and I'll definitely be stopping by next time I'm in the city. This ice cream parlour is considered one of the best in Dublin, and didn't disappoint. They have a lot of flavours to choose from, and they let you sample each one before making the final decision. If this doesn't make it the best walking tour in Dublin then I don't know what will.

Barrels of whiskey lined up against the wall in Dublin Ireland

Do you recognize this location? This is just a little hint relating to one of our many stops along our secret food tour in Dublin, and it's a pretty famous spot too!

Our 2 day trip to Dublin took us to many incredible places in the city. But one of my favourite things we did was going on a walking tour with Secret Food Tours . If you're looking for a fun and unique experience in Dublin, you need to book yourself on this tour. The tour itself lasts around 3 hours, so you'll still have more than enough time to visit other locations in Dublin too! If you want some more advice on where to eat in Dublin, check out Volumes & Voyages Top 5 Places to Visit in Dublin, Ireland which has some great tips.

Check out my post covering the best things to do during a 2 day trip to Dublin for some helpful tips and recommendations. If you're wondering where to stay in Dublin, Iveagh Garden Hotel is a great option right in the heart of the city. And don't forget to visit Manchester if you're heading to the north of England and love food as much as I do - the food scene there is incredible! If you have any questions about the food tour or Dublin in general, get in touch either by email or Instagram .

Why You Have to Book Dublin’s Secret Food Tour

If you're considering a food tour in Dublin, then look no further. This post outlines exactly why you should choose Secret Food Tours in Dublin. #dublin #ireland #europe

According to  Dictionary.com , a foodie is “a person keenly interested in food, especially in eating or cooking.”  Seeing this, I realize that Marty and I fit a part of that definition.

You see, we are definitely interested in eating, but not so interested in cooking.  Again, it does use the word “or” so I say we fit the definition of a foodie!  Well then, what better way for a couple of foodies to spend a day in a new city than on a food tour?

After reading  A Luxurious Afternoon Tea Experience at Ashford Castle , I was itching to go to a tea.  Realizing that Marty probably wouldn’t go for this, I starting researching food tours in Dublin instead.

Having read the article from XYU and Beyond on  traditional Irish food,  I knew we had to do a food tour.  After loving our Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh so much, Marty and I were really looking forward to our  Secret Food Tour  in Dublin.  I assure you we were not disappointed!

Keep reading to see the reasons that we loved our Secret Food Tour.

History From a Local

We had about  3 days in Dublin , so doing a food tour fit into our schedule perfectly.

Making our way across the Ha’penny Bridge from our Airbnb, it was a quick walk to meet our guide right outside of Trinity College.

Honestly, at this point in the trip, I am just loving the fact that it is June and I’m walking in the 70-degree sunshine instead of being back home in Texas where it is probably 105-degrees.  LOL!

Finding our guide, Cal was so easy.  We walked across the street from one of our  free things to do in Dublin , Trinity College.  We immediately noticed him with his red umbrella, just as he noted in the e-mail he sent to us the day before.

Once our group assembled, Cal began giving us an overview of the city, as well as some wonderful history of Dublin.  Describing to us not only the history associated with the food but also a fun story about the college.

I giggled a little when he shared that the college students believe that if you walk under the bell tower while the bell is ringing then you will fail your degree!

Being the history lovers that we are, Marty and I really enjoyed hearing Cal’s stories.  I could easily see that all of the guests were entertained as well, but I think we were all ready to get to the food!

I felt like Cal could read the group as well, and knew just when to stop the stories and move on to the next place and get everyone to the star of the tour, the food!

Great Food Venues

Obviously, one of the reasons you take a food tour is to be introduced to new places.  This is the reason that we took the  Bishop Arts Food Tour  in our hometown of Dallas even.

So often, we get stuck in a food rut and don’t venture out to try new places.

Well, I can definitely say that Cal introduced us to several places that we probably would not have visited on our own.  The first of which, was Kilkenny Design.  Honestly, I would have never had even known to eat here.

If you’re just walking by looking through the downstairs windows, Kilkenny Design appears to be a fun little shop full of handmade artisan crafts, but don’t be fooled, there is way more to this store.

Upstairs, you will find a charming cafe decorated with shabby chic furniture that serves up one of the best breakfasts in Dublin according to Cal.

It is at Kilkenny Design that we were introduced to the full Irish breakfast, complete with potato cakes, brasher (bacon for my American friends), white pudding, and fried tomatoes.

We knew there were several  unusual things to do in Dublin , but we probably would not have assumed there was a great restaurant on top of Kilkenny Design.

**Here is my first warning-PACE YOURSELF!  There is so much food on this tour that you might want to just taste a little of each thing.  That’s what I did and I was still stuffed by the end of the tour!

Full Irish Breakfast on Secret Food Tour in Dublin

Of course, Kilkenny Design wasn’t our only interesting stop.

After leaving Kilkenny Design, we went to the Celtic Whiskey Shop where we had the opportunity to taste three different Irish whiskeys while learning about some of the history of whiskey in Dublin.

Out of the five places we visited on the tour, Marty and I had actually only heard of two, so this was truly an introduction to new places for us.

Celtic Whiskey Shop Dublin is a stop on the Secret Food Tour in Dublin

Eat Some Amazing Irish Food

Of course on any food tour, the main reason you are there is for the food!  I could not believe all of the food that we had on this tour.  Trust me when I tell you that you better wear your stretchy pants!

I’ve already mentioned the Irish breakfast and the whiskey tasting, but that’s only a small sampling of our day.  After leaving Celtic Whiskey, we made our way to a historic Irish pub, The Hairy Lemon.  (Just saying the name of this place makes me giggle.)

Side note-be sure and ask your guide how they came up with the name of the pub, it’s a fun story.  The atmosphere of The Hairy Lemon was exactly what I expected a Dublin pub to be.

Surrounded by wood paneling with random decor all over the walls, televisions broadcasting sports, and cozy tables strategically placed to maximize the space, you can’t help but to smile and feel like a local in this fun setting.

After we settled in, Cal offered us the choice of Guinness pie, Irish stew, veggie pie, or Irish coddle.  Marty ordered the Guinness pie with a Guinness (our first one ever) and I ordered the stew with a Baileys and coffee.

I know, weird combination but I wasn’t sure if I would like the Guinness.  LOL!

When our food arrived, not only was it incredible, but the portions were huge.  I was not expecting a full-size portion, but that’s exactly what we received!  I honestly loved Marty’s meal, the Guinness beer included!

So my recommendation at the Hairy Lemon would be the Guinness pie.  It was loaded with flavor and was absolutely delicious.  My lamb stew was tender and flavorful, there was just a spice in there that I didn’t particularly care for.

Guinness pie and Guinness

After The Hairy Lemon, we made our way to Murphy’s Ice Cream.  Murphy’s ice cream is made with natural ingredients and always starts with fresh cream, so you know you’re getting a quality product.

I actually had Murphy’s sea salt ice cream while we were in  Kilkenny,  so I knew what a fabulous treat this was.

Murphy’s will let you sample until your heart is content, just ask!  This time I chose the Irish Coffee flavor, and yes it contains whiskey, while Marty went for the chocolate.  Both were fabulous!

ice cream cone during Secret Food Tour in Dublin

Leaving Murphy’s, we make our way to our last stop of the day, Leo Burdocks for some famous fish and chips.  Cal explained to us that Leo’s usually has a line around the corner, but it’s worth the wait.

This “fast food” style fish and chips joint is no joke.  Celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, U2, and Naomi Campbell have all graced this establishment!

Here Cal treated us to smoked haddock and chips, explaining that all of the fish is freshly caught that day, except for the smoke haddock because it needs time to smoke.

Personally, Marty and I didn’t care for the smoked fish.  I think we would have preferred the original fish, but we were so full that we weren’t too worried about it.  LOL!

At this point, I was stuffed, but Cal wasn’t finished with us yet.  One last sampling to finish the day, delicious Irish cheese.  See why you need your stretchy pants?!

Of course, somewhere on the tour is the “secret food” but that would just be wrong of me to tell you what it is!!

Opportunity to Make New Friends!

I love how food unites people and this is absolutely true during a Secret Food Tour!  We had so much fun getting to know our fellow foodies!

Our tour consisted of people from all over the world.  We met some outgoing fellow Texans as well as some ladies from Scotland and Galway, Ireland.

Marty and I spent most of our time with a delightful lady from Australia, Anne, and a fabulous lady from Denver, Colorado, Sara.

Anne was on holiday researching a book about her grandfather.  Not only was her story fascinating to me, but she was also just so much fun to be around!  Sara, who is on a world tour for a year, was so insightful and intriguing.

I loved talking with her about Denver and hearing about all of the places she was planning to visit on her world tour!

We enjoyed the tour so much with these fun ladies that we wound up spending the rest of the afternoon with them visiting the Teeling Whiskey Distillery and a couple of the historic churches (which are on our list of  free things to do in Dublin ).

Should You Book a Secret Food Tour in Dublin?

I did a Secret Food Tour in Madrid last year and it was the highlight of my 8 week trip around Europe! These guys are the best and I will seek them out everywhere I go now. Love that your tour included a Celtic Whiskey Shop and Murphy's Ice Cream as well as a real Irish pub and new friends!

Glad you enjoyed the photos. Be sure and book with Secret Food Tours when you go back! :)

That looks like an amazing food tour. I am not sure when I will be in Dublin again, but nice to know they offer tours in other cities. I think I might have to check out one of the London ones.

That's such a great idea, Anisa. Let me know how it is :)

That's such a great idea for a tour! Plus the food looks delicious! Will have to consider it when we plan a trip there!

You really should, Monica. It was great!

BGE Theatre, Thursday 13th February

Moscow City Ballet – The Nutcracker. Part of the Tchaikovsky Trilogy .

Moscow City Ballet celebrates the classical Russian tradition in spectacular style. Victor Smirnov-Golovanov's original interpretation of The Nutcracker has an innovative freshness. The timeless story of Clara, who is whisked away on a fairy tale adventure by her Nutcracker Prince, is set to Tchaikovsky's glorious score and offers an unmissable treat for the whole family. This enchanting tale is an eternal seasonal favourite and the perfect introduction to Russian classical ballet. Tchaikovsky is the undisputed Tsar of ballet; his sweeping scores have the power to transport audiences from delight to despair, especially when performed by a full orchestra. The new generation of principal dancers adds a a youthful exuberance to these renowned ballets.

Part of the Tchaikovsky Trilogy , alongside Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty .

If a customer purchases tickets to more than one production (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker) at the same time at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre box office or via the Groups Booking line (01-677-7770 Mon-Fri; 9am-5.30pm), the following discounts apply: Two different titled performances: €5 off each ticket. Three different titled performances: €10 off each ticket.

“an unsurpassed penchant for drama and storytelling” – The Irish Times . “Bord Gáis Energy Theatre raises the bar with Moscow City Ballet. Prepare to be mesmerised by the stunning dancing, magnificent sets and opulent costumes” – Irish Mirror .
