Want to live on a cruise ship? A 2-year trip around the world from Florida will cost you this much
The cost of living on a cruise ship.
A new cruise experience could be more affordable than the rent or mortgage you’re paying on land.
ORLANDO, Fla. - A new cruise experience could be more affordable than the rent or mortgage you’re paying on land.
There’s a new option to live on a cruise ship while traveling the world.
"We’re excited!!" Barbara Violetta said. Violetta is a retiree from The Villages and she is crazy for cruises. In fact, she has been on more than 70 cruises.
But now she’s gearing up for the voyage of a lifetime. "It’s a dream come true," she said.
She will be boarding a two-year cruise with Victoria Cruise Line . There are 214 ports in 115 countries on seven continents.
The ship is more than 750 feet long and about 100 feet wide. There will be 1,000 passengers on board.

Passengers on board the Victoria Cruise Line consist of retirees and digital nomads – those who can work from home even if that home floats.
"Anybody who is working from home, who says it has to be a home fixed in the ground? Why can’t it be at sea?" Violetta said.
What is the cost for a trip like this?
"Those who have an inside cabin, will be paying about $2,400 a month per person," said Valerie Linderoth, a Victoria Cruises Brand Ambassador. "It’s actually pretty affordable."
While the price of $2,400 a month may not sound affordable at first, there are other factors to consider.
Rent paid monthly includes cooked meals, television, Wi-Fi, gym, pool, spa and access to doctors, nurses and a dentist on board.
"They do your laundry three times a week!" Violetta said. "Free laundry is done for us. No cleaning. No making your bed. There’s even a turndown service every day."
The $2,400 price tag is for one person in an inside cabin if you sign up for the 37-month option, which offers the biggest discount.
FEELING LUCKY? These 22 lottery scratch-offs have million-dollar top prizes available
But if you choose the 24-month option, it will cost you $5,119.
The 12-month option is $5,759 a month.
Whichever option you choose, it’s a long time to be away from home base, which is why Victoria Cruises allows passengers to take a break and pay just 30% of their rent while they’re gone.
"I have to take a break. My daughter is planning a wedding next year," Violetta said.
Some passengers said they plan to renew their stay indefinitely.
"We have quite a few people – about 70% – who are choosing to do the 37+ month and a lot of them are saying, "I’m gonna stay on this ship until the day I die," Linderoth said.
The cruise around the world sets sail December 1 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This Three-Year Cruise Visits 148 Countries on All Seven Continents
By Rachel Chang
Sailing around the world in 80 days may be legendary, but sailing around the world in 1,001 days is now a reality. This fall, Life at Sea Cruises ’ inaugural three-year cruise aboard the MV Lara will hit the high seas, taking passengers to 382 ports in 148 countries on all seven continents, all on one epic itinerary.
“The demand for long-term extended cruises has been growing in popularity in recent years,” Life at Sea Cruises CEO Kendra Holmes says. “This, coupled with more people able to work remotely and the increased cost of home ownership and renting showcased an opportunity to offer travelers the chance to embark on an adventure—except, in our case, the vacation doesn't have to end.”
Mixing work and play in this innovative way isn’t just efficient, it also cuts down on the hassle of constantly planning travel to dream destinations one at a time. After all, the 130,000-mile mega itinerary checks off major bucket list sites, including the Great Wall of China, Pyramids at Giza, Rome’s Colosseum, Petra in Jordan, Machu Picchu in Peru, India’s Taj Mahal, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, and Ecuador's Galapagos Islands . Also on the docket: Yosemite National Park , Victoria Island, and Glacier Bay in North America; Wat Arun Temple, Ha Long Bay, and Pink Beach in Asia; and Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway, France’s Mont Saint Michel, and UK’s Windsor Castle in Europe.
The beauty of the extended voyage is that there isn’t that constant rush to get back to the ship. “Our longer port times truly empower residents to make the most of their time in each port,” Holmes says. “Days-long port times mean that residents can get the most out of each city we visit.”
Another perk is the mindfully curated sailing route (which is especially impressive on this interactive Google Earth map ). “Our itinerary places the MV Lara in the Northern Hemisphere in the summers and the Southern in the winters, so it’s always summer for Life At Sea Cruises,” she adds. Those sunny days include ringing New Year’s Days in Buenos Aires, Papua New Guinea, and the Maldives , and enjoying Valentine’s Days in Colombia, the French Polynesia , and en route to South Africa, as well as being in Asia for the Singapore Food Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival in South Korea, and Gion Matsuri in Japan.
In between the port stops, life on board is packed with possibilities, too. The ship is equipped with a pool deck, gym, spa, and auditorium that will host everything from movie screenings to live performances. International cuisine is offered at its multiple bars and restaurants, ranging from fine dining to casual eats. Daily activities will include dance lessons, karaoke sessions, and yoga practices, among others.
Inside a cabin on the new ship.
While the cruise is, at its core, a three-year getaway, the company realizes the need to stay connected with real life back on land, too. Remote workers can access free high-speed Wi-Fi and use the business center facilities. (Private office space is also available for rent for those who want to run their businesses from the ship.) Also, friends and families can visit by just paying the local port taxes and fees and staying in the cabins for free. Some guest cabins may also be available.
The all-inclusive fare for the three-year getaway starts at $43,860 per person per year, based on double accommodations. (A previously lower rate that started at $38,313 per person per year has already sold out.) Solo travelers will be charged a single supplement fee. Meals and weekly housekeeping are all included, but alcohol outside of dinner, shore excursions, spa services, and other premium services are an additional fee. Basic medical visits are also covered, while dental care, medical procedures, and prescriptions are offered at extra cost.
Operated by Aegan Sea operator Miray Cruises, the 629-cabin MV Lara can accommodate 1,266 passengers, but will only be run at 80 percent capacity. The ship is an upgrade in size from the MV Gemini that was originally announced for this journey back in March, according to CNN . Amid immediate skyrocketing demand, many of those working for the cruise company quit, reportedly because of disagreements over the ship that would be used. (Some of those who defected are now working on a rival cruise called the Villa Vie Residences that embarks on a three-and-a-half-year long itinerary to 420 destinations, starting May 15, 2024, from Southampton, England.)
Now back on track, the Life at Seas 36-month itinerary takes off November 1, 2023, from Istanbul, offering passengers the opportunity to embark in Barcelona on November 5, the Bahamas on November 15, or Puerto Rico on November 18, eventually returning after three trips around the sun to Istanbul on November 1, 2026.
“Accomplishing a travel feat like this one outside of our voyage would be extremely difficult, logistically and financially,” Holmes says. “If people are interested in traveling the globe while enjoying life at sea, then our voyage is the right choice for them. “

Oceana Cruises' 180-Day Cruise Will Visit 34 Countries in 2024
Oceania's world cruise will stop in almost 100 destinations in 180 days.
After record demand for its 2023 world cruise, Oceania Cruises has unveiled the itinerary for its epic global voyage for 2024. The cruise line's 180-day journey around the world will set sail on January 14, 2024, and visit more than 96 destinations in 34 different countries.
"Incredibly, last year our 2023 world cruise sold out in just one day, so for 2024 we are providing guests more extended voyage options to deeply and meaningfully rediscover the world," Howard Sherman, President and CEO of Oceania Cruises, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.
Oceania's "Around the World in 180 Days" cruise will depart from Los Angeles and cross more than three oceans and 15 seas as it makes its way around the globe to New York. The journey, on the Oceania Insignia, stops at more than 100 UNESCO World Heritage sites with 24 overnight stays.
Passengers will journey across the Pacific, through French Polynesia and Australia before continuing onto destinations like Japan and Vietnam's Ha Long Bay. The voyage continues along the shores of India and the Arabian Peninsula before sailing across Europe and completing its route across the Atlantic in New York.
The 2024 "Around the World" journey starts at $48,499 per person and includes roundtrip first-class airfare and amenities like prepaid gratuities, laundry, and luggage delivery. During your days at sea, you can keep yourself busy with spa appointments, art workshops, the casino, cabaret, and four open-seating restaurants — not to mention the daily afternoon tea service accompanied by a four-string quartet. There is also a fitness center and sports deck, and of course, a saltwater pool with two hot tubs.
But if half a year at sea seems a bit too long, Oceania has also created four new Grand Voyages , varying in length from 72 to 82 days. "While a globe-circling journey is the pinnacle of life-changing travel experiences, we have specially curated a set of Grand Voyages for seasoned and time-rich travelers to navigate storied seas, straits, and oceans that boldly connect diverse and exotic corners of the globe," Sherman said.
The four journeys include routes from Los Angeles to Sydney, Abu Dhabi to Tokyo, Mumbai to Tokyo, and Papeete to Cape Town. The voyages start at $15,199 per person and prices vary, depending on the destination.
If you need a little more time to decide, Oceania Cruises has also released the itinerary for their 2025 Around-the-World Cruise which will flip the script and travel east to west from New York, passing through Latin America, Southern Africa, India, Asia, and Australia before finishing in San Diego.

Want to live on a cruise ship? 2-year trip around the world from Florida may cost less than living on land
"rent" for your home on the high seas includes meals, gym, cabin, pools and shore visits. add-ons are the shows, a dentist and a doctor..
Living on a cruise ship may be more affordable than a permanent home
If you love a cruise, why not live on one. Once cruise ship is offering a 2-year, all inclusive "vacation" around the world that may be cheaper than a mortgage and living expenses on land.
ORLANDO, Fla. – A new cruise experience could be more affordable than the rent or mortgage you’re paying on land. There’s a new option to live on a cruise ship while traveling the world.
"We’re excited!" said Barbara Violetta, a retiree from The Villages, Florida, who has been on more than 70 cruises.
Now, she’s gearing up for the voyage of a lifetime.
"It’s a dream come true," she said.
The all-inclusive cruise ship offers a 2-year cruise that may be more affordable than living on land.
(Victoria Cruise Lines / FOX 35 Orlando)
She will be boarding a two-year cruise with Victoria Cruises Line. There are 214 ports in 115 countries on seven continents. The ship is more than 750 feet long and about 100 feet wide, and there will be 1,000 passengers on board.
"Anybody who is working from home, who says it has to be a home fixed in the ground, why can’t it be at sea?" Violetta asked.
A cabin aboard the ship.
What is the cost for a trip like this?
"Those who have an inside cabin will be paying about $2,400 a month per person," said Valerie Linderoth, a Victoria Cruises Brand Ambassador. "It’s actually pretty affordable."
While the price of $2,400 a month may not sound affordable at first, there are other factors to consider. Rent paid monthly includes cooked meals, television, Wi-Fi, gym, pool, spa and access to doctors, nurses and a dentist on board.
There are dentists and doctors aboard.
"They do your laundry three times a week!" Violetta said. "Free laundry is done for us. No cleaning. No making your bed. There’s even a turndown service every day."
The $2,400 price tag is for one person in an inside cabin if you sign up for the 37-month option, which offers the biggest discount. If you choose the 24-month option, it will cost you $5,119. The 12-month option is $5,759 a month.

Passengers can come and go
Whichever option you choose, it’s a long time to be away from home base, which is why Victoria Cruises allows passengers to take a break and pay just 30% of their rent while they’re gone.
"I have to take a break," Violetta said. "My daughter is planning a wedding next year."
Some passengers said they plan to renew their stay indefinitely.
"We have quite a few people – about 70% – who are choosing to do the 37-plus month, and a lot of them are saying, ‘I’m going to stay on this ship until the day I die,’" Linderoth said.
The cruise around the world sets sail Dec. 1 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Oceania wants travelers to live on its new luxury cruise ship for 6 months while it sails to 43 countries. A trip starts at $60K — see what it'll be like.
- Oceania announced a 180-day 2026 world cruise from Miami to 101 ports, starting at $59,700 a person.
- The premium cruise brand tapped its new luxury ship, Vista , for the 43-country itinerary.
- Oceania's 2024 world cruise set sail in January after it sold out in 30 minutes.
Oceania Cruises wants you to spend at least $59,700 — and 180 days — living on its newest cruise ship while it sails 360 degrees around the globe.
And if the itinerary's bookings are anything like the company's previous global sailings , this six-month cruise could sell out — fast. Bookings for this cruise officially open on March 13.
The brand's around-the-world itineraries have become wildly hyped over the last few years. In January, its most recent world cruise on the fully booked Insignia departed from Los Angeles on a similar 180-day, 96-port journey.
When reservations opened two years prior, that ship was sold out in 30 minutes. Oceania is a high-end brand of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.
Looking ahead, Oceania’s 2026 global itinerary is set to be bigger, better, and on a newer ship.
The premium cruise line has frequently picked the 684-guest Insignia as its world cruise vessel of choice.
But this time, it's switching "ship" up: The company has tapped its newest vessel, the 1,200-guest Vista, for its 2026 itinerary. And it won't be a light trial run: The sailing is set to include 101 ports across 43 countries — and the cruise line says tours will hit 81 UNESCO World Heritage sites .
On January 6, 2026, Oceania says the Vista will depart Miami and spend the first six weeks sailing to destinations along the coast of South America.
The ship would then head back north to ports in Mexico, Southern California, and Hawaii before chugging along to South Pacific islands like Bora Bora.
From there, the itinerary includes several ports in Australia.
After these stops, the ship would head north and west, continuing to destinations like Singapore and Mumbai as it sails from Southeast Asia to India.
From the world’s most populous country, the Vista would then journey to Middle East destinations like Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Muscat, Oman.
After sailing through the Suez Canal, the ship would begin hitting a series of ports throughout the Mediterranean, Europe, and the British Isles.
And following a few stops in Iceland, the Vista would finally begin its journey back to North America.
After pit stops in Halifax, Canada, New York, and Charleston, South Carolina, the half-year journey would finally conclude where it started: in sunny Miami.
Whew, what a journey!
Throughout these six months, travelers would get to live out their “Suite Life on Deck” dreams.
The new 791-foot-long Vista flexes cabins that start at 240 square feet.
Seafaring guests could spend their days at sea luxuriating in the ship's spa and library.
Folks who prefer to occupy their time with more hands-on activities can instead take cooking and art classes.
Oceania says its culinary program and “destination-focused” itineraries are its bread-and-butter.
The latter has already been covered: The 2026 world cruise is set to hit 101 ports, after all.
As for the former, Oceania's Vista could have enough restaurants to satisfy even the pickiest of foodies.
The almost one-year-old ship has 11 dining options, from afternoon tea to dishes created by the ship's godmother, celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis.
Guests could spend their mornings grabbing an espresso at the coffee shop.
And at night (or any time: it's five o'clock "somewhere" when you sail through every time zone, right?), guests can sip on flashy bourbon and rye-based cocktails at the Founders Bar.
Six months at sea isn’t for everyone. But for some travelers, the itinerary’s starting cost of $59,700 per person could be an absolute steal.
Planning a multi-country trip can be complex: Think of all the hotels, flights, and land transportation you'd have to coordinate.
But on a world cruise, these logistics are all planned for you. Oceania's fare also includes first-class roundtrip flights and transfers, internet, and laundry.
The best part?
You'll probably lose fewer pairs of socks on a world cruise versus a do-it-yourself vacation: No need to unpack and repack every few days when you'll be living in the same cabin for the entire vacation.

Oceania Cruises has announced its “ Around the World ” cruise, along with its “Global Wanderlust” option, a 120-day voyage that departs from San Diego.
There’s an additional West Coast departure, “World Odyssey,” a 197-day cruise from Los Angeles. Both conclude in Miami.
The inaugural “Around the World” voyage, though, departing from Miami aboard the new ship Vista , will cover 101 ports across 43 countries in 2026. Bookings begin Wednesday.
The boutique 1,200-guest vessel will cross three oceans and 18 seas, exploring Southeast Asia and Australia, the South Pacific, Europe and South America.
“After the remarkable success of our most recent world cruises, we have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to present travelers with an even more extraordinary experience for our 2026 voyage,” remarked Frank A. Del Rio, president of Oceania Cruises. “… With this new voyage, we are excited to offer a rare chance to experience the world from an entirely new perspective – and further forward the future of global cruising.”
Naturally, living at sea for months on end will cost you. The “Around the World” cruise starts at $59,699 per person.
What do you get for the fare? Exotic ports of call, of course, and Vista ‘s 11 onboard culinary venues, including the lines’ newest additions, Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes, the Bakery at Baristas and the new signature restaurant, Ember.
As for the West Coast departures? The San Diego cruise will be at sea from March 7, 2026 to July 6, 2026. Fares start at $42,000. The longest option, the Los Angeles cruise, leaves Dec. 20, 2025, also returning July 6, 2026, with fares starting at $63,000 a person.
This epic new luxury cruise costs up to $550,000 per cabin — and might be worth it
Uber-luxury line Crystal is out with a new world cruise itinerary that might be its most epic ever. It comes with an epic price tag, too.
The recently relaunched brand on Tuesday began taking reservations for a 135-night voyage from Los Angeles to Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), that will bring the wealthy set to a stunning 72 destinations in 27 countries across five continents.
Kicking off Jan. 11, 2026, and taking place on Crystal's 740-passenger Crystal Serenity, the sailing starts at a sky-high $168,000 per cabin for two people.

Top suites on the ship will cost up to $550,000 for two passengers.
For that lofty price, well-heeled travelers can experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip that includes visits to many of the world's most famous destinations, from Bora Bora in French Polynesia to the pyramids of Egypt — all while living in the lap of luxury.
Crystal Serenity, which TPG has called the queen of luxury cruising , underwent a massive overhaul in 2023 that gave it more space per passenger than any other luxury ship afloat. The overhaul included a significant enlargement of many of its accommodations and a reduction in the number of passengers that will sail on any given voyage.
Additionally, Crystal's crew-to-passenger ratio — a top measure of luxury on any ship — was increased to roughly 1:1, an astounding level.
The net result makes Crystal Serenity one of the most luxurious cruise vessels afloat.

A longer world cruise
Crystal typically offers one world cruise a year, and it's always lengthy and destination-packed. But the newly announced 2026 world sailing is longer than those the line has offered in recent years, coming in at 135 days long.
In comparison, the single world cruise Crystal offers this year is 125 nights long, while a world cruise planned for 2025 will be 123 nights long.
The new sailing for 2026 is also pricier than Crystal world cruises in the past. Starting rates are $35,000 more per couple than the starting rates for Crystal's 2025 world cruise. That sailing starts at $133,000 per cabin for two.
Crystal Serenity's most luxurious accommodation, the Penthouse Suite, costs $71,600 more on the 2026 world cruise than it costs on the 2025 world cruise.
An epic itinerary to five continents
The 135-night world cruise for 2026 will begin with a westward crossing of the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and French Polynesia on the way to New Zealand and Australia.
From there, the vessel will head to various countries across Asia, including Indonesia and India, before sailing through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean.
In the Mediterranean, the ship will visit multiple ports in Greece, Italy and France before the trip ends in Civitavecchia May 26, 2026.
Unlike some previous Crystal world cruises, the trip doesn't offer a full circumnavigation of the world. That allows the ship to spend more time in the regions it does visit, with a particularly large number of stops in the South Pacific, Australia and Asia.
The new world cruise will be just the third at Crystal in the past eight years, as the line stopped sailing world cruises during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There’s an old joke where a travel consultant asks a customer, “Are you interested in a world cruise?” The customer responds, “No, I’d rather go someplace else.”
But if you’re interested in a five-month luxury journey that will take you to more than 27 countries, the upcoming 2026 World Cruise from Crystal may be for you.
The cruise, that will transport guests from world capitals to tropical paradises, will be open for booking on March 19, 2024. A waitlist is already available.
The Crystal Serenity will be one’s home for 135 days on the World Cruise. The 68,000-ton Serenity is 820 feet long and 105 feet wide with a maximum cruising speed of 22 knots. The ship’s 740 passengers all enjoy ocean view rooms and suites, and the ship has a guest to crew ratio of just 1.33 to 1.
The Serenity was launched in 2003, with Dame Julie Andrews named the ship’s ‘godmother.’ Serenity, which was updated last year, is similar in size and passenger capacity to the Regent Grandeur of the Seas , launched in 2023.
Crystal, formerly Crystal Cruises, was acquired by A&K Travel Group (Abercrombie & Kent) in 2022, after suffering a near-death experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deal included the Crystal brand and its two vessels, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Crystal says the ships have been “reimagined” with larger, updated suites with artisanal finishes and new wellness offerings.

Sailor Cole Brauer makes history as the first American woman to race solo around the world
Aboard her 40-foot racing boat First Light , 29-year-old Cole Brauer just became the first American woman to race nonstop around the world by herself.
The New York native pulled into A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a treacherous 30,000-mile journey that took 130 days.
She thanked a cheering crowd of family and fans who had been waiting for her on shore.
“This is really cool and so overwhelming in every sense of the word,” she exclaimed, before drinking Champagne from her trophy.
The 5-foot-2 powerhouse placed second out of 16 avid sailors who competed in the Global Solo Challenge, a circumnavigation race that started in A Coruña with participants from 10 countries. The first-of-its-kind event allowed a wide range of boats to set off in successive departures based on performance characteristics. Brauer started on Oct. 29, sailing down the west coast of Africa, over to Australia, and around the tip of South America before returning to Spain.
Brauer is the only woman and the youngest competitor in the event — something she hopes young girls in and out of the sport can draw inspiration from.
“It would be amazing if there was just one girl that saw me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that too,’” Brauer said of her history-making sail.
It’s a grueling race, and more than half of the competitors have dropped out so far. One struck something that caused his boat to flood, and another sailor had to abandon his ship after a mast broke as a severe storm was moving in.
The four-month journey is fraught with danger, including navigating the three “Great Capes” of Africa, Australia and South America. Rounding South America’s Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, is often likened to climbing Mount Everest because of its perfect storm of hazards — a sharp rise in the ocean floor and whipping westerly winds push up massive waves. Combined with the frigid waters and stray icebergs, the area is known as a graveyard for ships, according to NASA. Brauer said she was “so unbelievably stoked” when she sailed past Cape Horn in January.
Marco Nannini, organizer of the Global Solo Challenge, said the comparison to scaling Mount Everest doesn’t capture the difficulty of the race. Sailing solo means not just being a skipper but a project manager — steering the boat, fixing equipment, understanding the weather and maintaining one’s physical health.
Nannini cited the relatively minuscule number of people who have sailed around the world solo — 186, according to the International Association of Cape Horners — as evidence of the challenges that competitors face. More than 6,000 people have climbed Mount Everest, according to High Adventure Expeditions .
Brauer stared down 30-foot waves that had enough force to throw her across the boat. In a scare caught on camera, she badly injured her rib near the halfway point of the event. At another point, her team in the U.S. directed Brauer to insert an IV into her own arm due to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.
She was able to stay in constant communication with members of her team, most of whom are based in New England, and keep herself entertained with Netflix and video calls with family through Starlink satellites. That’s also how Brauer was able to use Zoom to connect with NBC News for an interview, while she was sailing about 1,000 miles west of the Canary Islands.
While Brauer was technically alone on First Light, she had the company of 450,000 followers on Instagram, where she frequently got candid about life on an unforgiving sea while reflecting on her journey.
“It all makes it worth it when you come out here, you sit on the bow, and you see how beautiful it is,” she said in an Instagram video, before panning the camera to reveal the radiant sunrise.
Brauer grew up on Long Island but didn’t learn to sail until she went to college in Hawaii. She traded in her goal of becoming a doctor for life on the water. But she quickly learned making a career as a sailor is extremely difficult, with professional racers often hesitant to welcome a 100-pound young woman on their team.
Even when she was trying to find sponsors for the Global Solo Challenge, she said a lot of people “wouldn’t touch her with a 10-foot pole” because they saw her as a “liability.”
Brauer’s message to the skeptics and naysayers? “Watch me.”
“I push so much harder when someone’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that,’ or ‘You’re too small,’” Brauer explained.
“The biggest asset is your mental strength, not the physical one,” Nannini said. “Cole is showing everyone that.”
Brauer hopes to continue competing professionally and is already eyeing another around-the-world competition, but not before she gets her hands on a croissant and cappuccino.
“My mouth is watering just thinking about that.”

24 Luxury Cruise Facts That Might Surprise You

Sumptuous escapes at sea
Some Oceania Cruises suites have walk-in closets and grand pianos
No expense has been spared when it comes to suite decor on luxury ships. For ultimate opulence, opt for the Owner’s suites which you’ll find on Oceania Cruises ' ships. These cover 1,991 square feet, have two walk-in closets and entrance foyers with a grand piano and a mahogany bar. A 15-day Svalbard & Arctic Passage cruise with accommodation in the Grand Owner’s suite costs from $23,044 per person.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Explorer had a big design budget
We’re increasingly seeing bigger budgets for ships’ decor. Huge amounts of cash are being splashed on sprucing up interiors, and one example of this decadence is Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' Seven Seas Explorer, which has 473 Swedish-designed chandeliers, 45,876 square feet of marble, Versace-designed dinnerware, crystal glasses from Eastern Europe and a $12 million art collection which includes several Picassos.
Orient Express is set to launch a seriously luxurious ship
After launching the world’s most luxurious train 140 years ago, Orient Express will launch an opulent ship to match. Orient Express Silenseas, which will take to the waves in 2026, will have 54 suites (including a 15,231-square-foot Presidential Suite), two swimming pools, two restaurants and a speakeasy bar. Oh, and a recording studio. Prices are to be confirmed (but will inevitably be eye-watering).
Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend offers themed suites
Sail on Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend and you can book a suite inspired by exotic destinations and hotels. We recommend the suite inspired by the Sea Island resort in Georgia. Expect ocean-inspired colourways and plenty of sea-glass green. A Treasures of the Greek Isles cruise with Windstar starts from $3,745 per person.
Now discover amazing facts about cruise ships you might not know
There are butlers onboard with a Silversea cruise
Book a sailing with Silversea and you’re guaranteed your own butler. They'll be on hand to help with everything from the unpacking of luggage to the opening of the Champagne bottles. They’re not just any butlers, either – they’ve undertaken a 108-point training programme created for the cruise line by the London-based School for Butlers. An 11-day Mediterranean Cruise in 2024 costs from $8,092 per person.
You can go beneath the ocean's surface with Scenic Cruises
An abundance of onboard kit means that luxury ships don’t just help passengers get to the world’s most remote places – they help them get below the waves and into the skies too. Take Scenic Cruises – their Scenic Eclipse ship recently became the first vessel to offer both helicopter flights and submarine dives in the Canadian Arctic. An Antarctica in Depth cruise costs from $16,310 per person.
Seven Seas Grandeur has in-suite spas
Love a session in the spa but value your personal space? Book Regent Seven Seas Cruises ’ Regent Suite, which you’ll find on Seven Seas Grandeur, due to launch in November 2023. Highlights include the two enormous bedrooms and the whirlpool bath on the balcony, although the pièce de resistance is the suite’s very own spa retreat.

You can sleep under the stars with the SeaDream Yacht Club
Set sail on one of SeaDream Yacht Club ’s yacht-style vessels and you’ll be able to spend a night under the stars. At night, staff transform the upper deck’s huge Balinese day beds by adding luxurious bed linens and fluffy pillows, allowing you to drift off to the sound of the ocean. Expect to pay around $3,700 for a seven-day cruise.
SeaDream Yacht Club has one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios at sea
Some cruise lines offer boats on boats
Zodiacs – small, fast boats carried on ships – make it easy to explore different landscapes, whether it’s the frozen tundra or the Galapagos’ wildlife-dotted islands. Special mentions go to Quark , which uses environmentally friendly four-stroke engine zodiacs; Silversea , famous for its expert-led zodiac excursions, and AE Expeditions – the line’s new expedition ship Sylvia Earle has 15 zodiacs. A seven-day Spitsbergen sailing with Quark costs from $5,547.
Aurora Expeditions and AE Expeditions ships have science laboratories onboard
If peering at distant shorelines through binoculars doesn’t cut it, sign up for a sailing with Aurora Expeditions or AE Expeditions . AE Expeditions ships have tech-filled laboratories and lecture theaters, making it easy to gain new perspectives on the destinations in question. Guests can contribute to a wide range of research projects, including ones relating to micro-plastics and sea life. A 15-day Svalbard In Depth sailing starts from $12,137 per person.
You can have your very own Dom Perignon Experience on Oceania Cruises’ Vista ship
Is spaciousness a priority? Consider Oceania Cruises . Their newest ship Vista (which set sail in May 2023) is tipped as having the largest entry-level staterooms at sea (280 square feet, if you were wondering). We’re equally excited about the Dom Perignon Experience – during this six-course extravaganza you’ll sip Dom Perignon Champagnes chosen to suit the various dishes. A 10-day Bangkok to Singapore cruise starts from $5,335 per person.
Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Flora has a stargazing platform
Celebrity Cruises ’ Celebrity Flora, which has space for just 100 passengers and is based permanently in the Galapagos Islands, is a pint-sized ship that can effortlessly access the areas other vessels can’t reach. But our favorite feature is the stargazing platform. Head here for stargazing sessions led by the ship’s onboard astronomer. You’ll pay from $7,796 for a Galapagos Inner Loop sailing on Celebrity Flora.
The naming ceremonies are often spectacular
Simply swinging a bottle against the side of a ship is so passé. In January 2023 Viking christened new luxury ship Viking Neptune. The ship’s godmother Nicole Stott (a retired NASA astronaut) used a traditional Viking broad ax to cut the rope, which sent a bottle of fizz smashing into the ship. A 13-day Mediterranean Odyssey cruise with Viking costs $5,911.
Your Abercrombie & Kent guide might be a famous explorer
Abercrombie & Kent Luxury Expedition Cruises – previously known as Crystal Cruises – are famous for their onboard experts. The cruise line’s expedition leaders include explorer James McClintock, recipient of the Antarctica Service Medal, and former Royal Marine Commando Russ Manning, who served as base commander in the South Orkneys and earned the Polar Medal. A 14-night Arctic Cruise Adventure with Abercrombie & Kent costs from $17,922.
You no longer have to wear a ball gown to dinner
You can ride on a magic carpet with Celebrity Cruises
Okay, not the type ridden by Aladdin. We’re talking about Celebrity Cruises’ Magic Carpet – a cantilevered platform which appears to float in thin air, and which glides up and down the side of Celebrity Edge, one of the cruise line’s most luxurious ships. Depending on what level it stops at, the Magic Carpet can become a restaurant, bar or nightclub, although the one constant is breathtaking views.

There are luxury ships you can live on
Dread disembarkation day? Why not simply stay onboard? No, we’re not suggesting claiming squatters’ rights at the end of your cruise, but splashing out on a cabin on The World , described by its owners as a luxury private residence at sea. There are 165 residences available for purchase and the ship sails around the planet – in 2023 it will visit South Asia, the Middle East, the Iberian Peninsula, Greenland, South America and Antarctica. Some residents live on the ship full-time, while others visit throughout the year, and residences start at around $1.2m.
Luxury cruise lines can be fully all-inclusive too
You can feast on cuisine prepared by Michelin-starred chefs
You can learn firsthand about the Polar regions
Luxury cruise lines are going all out to provide fascinating insights into the explorers who first mapped these regions. In 2024, Scenic will launch several East Antarctic cruises focusing on the routes taken by explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. If you sail through the Arctic on Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot (the world’s only luxury ice breaker), a team of 23 polar experts will help you gain a whole new perspective on these remote regions.
There’s designer decor on Oceania Cruises’ Vista ship
SeaDream Yacht Club offer a ‘Champagne & Caviar Splash’
You need to book well in advance
If you’re planning on a bucket list-worthy sailing on one of the more luxurious ships, you’ll need to bag your spot early on. Take Azamara’s World Voyage , a 155-night, 37-country sailing which takes place in 2024 and is currently sold out (there’s a waiting list of passengers hoping for cancellations). Luckily, spots on the 2025 World Voyage are still available – if you’ve got a minimum of $42,622 to spare.
