2021 Tata Safari Vs Tata Safari Storme – Detailed Specs Comparison
The 2021 Tata Safari will directly put up against the MG Hector Plus, upcoming next-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the Hyundai Alcazar (three-row Creta)
Once the BS6 emission norms became mandatory in April last year, Tata Motors discontinued the Safari Storme. However, after almost a year, the carmaker went on to confirm that it is all set to revive the brand, albeit in an all-new avatar. The three-row Gravitas that was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo, was renamed ‘Safari’, and launched in the Indian market on February 22, 2021.
Here is a detailed specifications comparison between the previous-gen Tata Safari and the 2021 Safari, take a read –
In its entirety, the Tata Safari continued to exist in its first-gen avatar, which means that the Safari Storme featured the overall same design language as the original Tata Safari launched in 1998. That being said, the Safari was loved by enthusiasts for its bold, and rugged no-nonsense design that really didn’t have to do too much to make its presence felt.
However, Tata has certainly moved on from that, and the new Safari is much more modern over the previous model. The car has been designed under Tata’s Impact 2.0 styling language and looks way more premium than the first-gen model, thanks to its chrome radiator grille, diamond-cut alloy wheels, split headlamps with LED DRLs, stylish roof rails and more.
In terms of size, the 2021 Safari measures 4,661 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width, 1,786 mm in height and has a 2,741 mm long wheelbase. In contrast, the Safari Storme had a length of 4,655 mm, a width of 1,855 mm, stood 1,922 mm tall and had a 2,650 mm long wheelbase.
This means that the New Safari has grown in terms of each of the aspects mentioned above, apart from the height. The new Safari is 6 mm longer, 39 mm wider and has a 100 mm longer wheelbase over the previous-gen model. However, the Safari Storme was a whole 136 mm taller than the new model.
The Safari Storme made use of a body-on-frame platform that also underpinned a few other Tata cars like the Aria and Hexa. While the platform was rugged, the ride and handling weren’t as good as the majority of people would like. On the other hand, the new Safari is underpinned by Land Rover’s D8-derived monocoque architecture called ‘Omega Arc’. The ride will likely be much more calmer, and handling is also expected to be drastically improved over the predecessor.
The Safari Storme was offered with Tata’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder Varicor 400 diesel engine that produced 156 PS of max power and 400 Nm of peak torque. On the lower trims, however, was a detuned version of this engine, rated at 150 PS/320 Nm.
The 2021 Tata Safari draws power from the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine that also performs duties on the Harrier. The Kryotec engine puts out 170 PS of power and 350 Nm torque, which is 14 PS more but 50 Nm less than the previous-gen Safari. However, it should be noted that the new Safari is lighter than the previous model. The transmission options include a 6-speed MT and an optional 6-speed AT.
It should be noted that the older Safari was known for its off-roading capabilities, and came with an optional four-wheel drivetrain. However, the new one, which is being offered with a front-wheel configuration as standard, will be best suited for mild off-roading only.
While the older Safari Storme looked outdated as compared to the modern SUVs available for its price, the new-gen model borrows its dashboard as well as equipment list from the Harrier. The cabin features a dual-tone layout, and the overall quality is a big step up from the previous-gen model.
That being said, the side-facing seats in the third row of the Safari Storme have been replaced with forward-facing seats. The 2021 Safari can be had with either a 6-seat or a 7-seat configuration.
Features & Safety
The Safari Storme was pretty barebones as far as features are concerned, but the new-gen model is packed up to the brim with features. It will be offered with an 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car-tech, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a premium audio system from JBL, cruise control, a 7-inch display for the instrument cluster, an auto-dimming IRVM, an electronic parking brake, a panoramic sunroof and much more.
The 2021 Safari’s safety suite will consist of an electronic parking brake with auto hold, ESP-based off-road modes, hill hold control and hill hold descent, ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, traction control, corner stability control, electronic stability program, rollover mitigation, rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera etc.
The BS4 Safari Storme was retailed at a starting price of Rs 11.09 lakh for the entry-level trim, going all the way up to Rs 16.44 lakh for the top-end trim. On the other hand, the 2021 Tata Safari is currently priced from Rs 14.69 lakh to Rs 21.45 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom New Delhi).
Comparison Verdict
The 2021 Tata Safari costs a lot more than the first-gen Safari, while it also loses out on the much-loved 4×4 drivetrain. So does the new-gen version of the SUV make any sense? Well, the new Safari feels much more premium, gets a whole lot of new features and safety tech, and is also much more sophisticated as compared to the previous-gen version; all of which justifies the premium you pay over the now-discontinued Safari Storme’s price.

New Tata Safari vs old Safari: Differences explained
The new tata safari was revealed yesterday and will go on sale in india next month. but can the new safari, which is a seven-seater harrier at heart, carry forward old safari storme's legacy let's find out..
Key Highlights
- 2021 Tata Safari is more spacious than Safari Storme
- 2021 Tata Safari has more power on tap than the predecessor
- The new Safari is much more luxurious than Safari Storme
Tata Motors discontinued Safari Storme last year as the BS6 emission norms came into effect in April. However, little did anyone know that the company was planning to revive the brand, albeit in an all-new avatar. The Indian carmaker revealed the all-new Safari yesterday and the SUV will be launched in India next month. Now, the new Safari is essentially a seven-seater Harrier and this is something the enthusiasts are finding hard to swallow. This is because the previous Safari christened Safari Storme became famous for its rugged personality and offroading capabilities. This is one of the reasons why the Indian army decided to have Tata customize the Storme as their patrolling vehicle. But according to Tata, the new Safari is not only as capable as the predecessor but is also more luxurious and comfortable. Now, this is something we can ascertain only once we have driven the new Safari. But till then, let's try to find out how different is the new Tafa Safari as compared to Safari Storme.
New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Dimensions
The new Safari is 4,658 mm long, 1,894 mm wide, 1,786 mm tall, and has a 2,741 mm-long wheelbase. The Safari Storme, in comparison to this, was 4,655 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,922 mm tall, and had a 2,650 mm-long wheelbase.
So, these figures tell us that the new Safari is longer, wider, and probably more spacious as compared to the previous model. However, the Storme was significantly taller than the new Safari and was built on a ladder on frame chassis as opposed to the new model's monocoque frame.
New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Features
One of the biggest gripes with the Safari Storme was that is was poorly appointed. The Storme had a rather simple interior layout and had provisions like an integrated music system, AC, analogue instrument panel with a small digital display, and manual AC. The new Safari, however, is significantly more feature-rich; it gets provisions like an 8.8-inch touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT display for the instrument panel, automatic AC, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, push-button start/stop, ambient lighting, cruise control, panoramic sunroof, iRA connectivity suite, etc.
New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Safety features
The new Tata Safari gets significantly more safety features as compared to Storme. The new model gets safety features like six airbags, cruise control, electronic stability program, hill-hold control, hill-descent control, corner stability control, and electronic traction control on the top-end trim.
New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Seating layout
The old Safari Storme was available as a seven-seater SUV where the last row had side-facing jump seats. The new model, however, is available as a six-seater with captain seats for the middle row or a seven-seater vehicle with front-facing third-row seats.
New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Specs
This is another area where the two SUVs are significantly different. The Storme was powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that generated 154 bhp with 400 Nm while the new Safari uses a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine that puts out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. So, this means that the new SUV has more horsepower up its sleeve but less torque as compared to the previous model. But it is also worth noting that Storme weighed almost 2,000 kg (kerb weight) while the new Safari tips the scale at 1,825 kg (kerb).
Another important thing to note is that the new Safari gets the option of an automatic gearbox while the Storme was available with manual transmission only.
New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: 4X4 drivetrain
This is one aspect which has been bothering most of the enthusiasts. Unlike the Storme, the new Safari doesn't get a 4X4 drivetrain option as yet. But Tata, in its defence, believes that there is a scanty demand for 4X4 drivetrain in India, which is why the carmaker hasn't offered it on the new model. However, the new Safari does get multiple driving modes.

Should you wait for the new Safari Storme or buy the present Safari?

Now that it has been almost three months since the unveiling of Safari Storme at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, the question which still remains unanswered is whether it’s worth waiting for the Safari Storme or not.
Here, we take a look at the various changes made to the Safari Storme and help you find the answer to this common but confusing question.
The Safari Storme retains the overall shape of the present Safari, but most of us tend to ignore the new chassis underneath it. Yes, the Safari Storme is built on the X2 platform on which the Tata Aria is also built. Hence, expect the Safari Storme to have a controlled vertical movement and an acceptable body roll.
If you are looking for a Safari which rides and handles better than the present model, then the Safari Storme is for you.
Performance and handling
The Safari Storme gets mild mechanical updates such as a 2.2-litre Dicor engine that puts out 138 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque with changes only in gear ratios (no changes in specifications). Other upgrades include rear disc brakes and a light hydro-formed chassis.
Hence, expect the Safari Storme to offer slightly better acceleration, steering feedback and a more effective braking than the old Safari. If you had been waiting for a significant performance upgrade, the new Safari Storme will not be of much interest to you.
Space and Comfort
There aren’t any noticeable changes in the seating comforts of the Safari Storme, when compared to the present model. The Safari Storme comes in the same 2+3+2 arrangement with jump seats in the third row.
If there is one significant improvement in the Safari Storme, it lies in the quality of its interiors. The inconsistent panel gaps and cheap looking plastics of the old Safari have been replaced with good quality plastics less evident panel gaps. There are minor improvements such as a glove box with more space, deep cubby holes and door pockets.
Hence, in terms of interiors, the quality offered in the Safari Storme will impress potential buyers. Also read: The Tata Safari Storme takes on the present Safari!
The Safari Storme displayed at the Auto Expo had a single DIN audio system, shift-on-the-fly 4WD, power windows, turn indicators on the outside mirrors and 16-inch alloy wheels and electrically adjustable mirrors which have become quite common even in cars below Safari’s segment. These are only mild changes when compared to the present model.
The Safari Storme is a bare basic vehicle when compared to the Tata Aria which has an impressive list of features such as Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS, EBD, traction control, six airbags, cruise control, Bluetooth, satellite based navigation system, leather upholstery, light sensing head lamps, rain sensing wipers, glove box chiller, 6 CD audio system and reverse camera.
Hence, the Safari Storme is sparsely equipped because there are only a few new features compared to the present model.
Looks are subjective, but still we feel that Tata has missed a wonderful opportunity to give an all-new look to the Safari. Instead, the company has tamed down the butch looks making the Safari Storme less sporty. The changes include an all-new grille which gives it a Land Rover-like look, a fresh headlamp cluster that has projector headlamps, chrome-tipped dual exhausts, redesigned tail gate with a new tail lamp cluster, a grey band and an integrated roof spoiler. The spare wheel is attached under the chassis, making the Safari Storme, less sporty sans the rear mounted spare wheel.
The Safari Storme may appeal to mature buyers but doesn’t have the sporty looks that urban SUV buyers expect in general. Also read: Tata Safari Storme vs. Mahindra Scorpio!
Tata Motors may likely price the Safari Storme close to the present Safari’s price range (Rs. 8.15 lakh – 13.25 lakh). The Safari Storme is an upgrade to the Safari in terms of interior quality, ride and handling characteristics. However, the Safari Storme largely remains the same as the Safari in key areas such as features, performance and looks.
If you are happy with the mildly face lifted Safari Storme, wait for a few more months for its launch but you won’t miss on much by buying the present model!

2024 Tata Safari Storme 4×4 Rendering – Legacy Preserved
Design of the 2024 safari storme.
Despite focusing on front-wheel drive vehicles with monocoque construction, Tata has always kept a few models with traditional ladder-frame chassis, rear-wheel drive, and 4x4 capability. However, this changed in 2020 when Tata discontinued the Hexa and Safari Storme. Currently, none of Tata's vehicles offer rear-wheel drive or 4x4 capability. There were rumors about the Hexa making a comeback with a BS-6 engine, but that never happened. The Safari nameplate was also used for a vehicle originally known as the Buzzard or Gravitas. But what if Tata decided to reintroduce the Safari Storme today? That's where the 2024 Tata Safari Storme 4×4 render comes in.
Exterior Design
To reduce visual bulk, Bimble Designs added a small black strip to the body claddings. The rear of the car features redesigned LED tail lights with a connected LED bar. The spare wheel remains mounted under the frame, and there are no other significant changes to the exterior. While interior details are not provided in the renders, it is expected to have seven seats and modern amenities typical of a modern car.
Power and Performance: Potential Engine Options
Potential market impact.
Many enthusiasts hope that Tata Motors will consider launching the Safari Storme, given its significant impact on the Indian market. Ultimately, it is the first indigenously built VIP automobile in India. There is a market for such a vehicle, as seen by the ongoing popularity of cars like the Mahindra Scorpio Classic.

Pick from popular cities, tata safari storme varicor 400 vs mahindra scorpio comparison.
The updated Safari Varicor 400 takes on its old rival the Scorpio S10 in the battle of the homegrown stars.

Tata recently updated its Safari Storme SUV with a new top trim that comes with an uprated motor and some cosmetic changes. To see how this new variant fares in the SUVs race, we pit it against Mahindra's popular Scorpio.
Performance & refinement
The Safari’s 2.2-litre motor, has been updated and now makes 154bhp and an impressive 40.78kgm of torque. It gets a new six-speed manual gearbox. This has made the Safari faster, it does 0-100kph in 12.84 secs, making it 0.6 seconds faster than the Scorpio. The Safari takes its time to get going due to a big turbo. Post that, there is a step-up in performance and you feel a nice shove in the back as it accelerates out but the engine sounds coarse and gearbox feels rubbery.
The Scorpio’s mHawk engine makes just 118bhp in comparison. Despite this, it is the faster one to respond and picks up quite well from slow speeds. It is also the nicer and easier SUV to drive on crowded city streets.
However, on open roads, it lacks the Safari’s punch and the engine gets vocal when you wring it too hard. And as for the gearbox, the long rubbery shifts takes all the fun out of shifting gears.
Ride & handling
The Safari feels jiggly at slow speeds and rocks from side to side. But the long-travel suspension can gobble up potholes without a fuss and it feels more adept at handling rutted roads than the Scorpio. Overall ride is really good and so is the straightline stability. However, show it a series of bends and the Safari isn’t too happy. The skyscraper-like towering stance and the resulting body roll often gets unnerving as the speeds rise.
The Scorpio feels marginally stiffer than the Safari and you do feel most road undulations at slow speeds. It too, tends to rock from side to side and bobs a fair bit as well. The ride does settle down once you pick up speed and it absorbs road imperfections pretty silently. Its high-speed stability is decent and it feels more agile than the Safari. It rolls less and the top-heavy feeling of the Safari is not felt in the Scorpio.
The Safari’s updated interior looks much bigger. The dashboard colour scheme looks different and the buttons and knobs seem to be updated. Although there’s no touchscreen infotainment system, it does get functionality like Bluetooth telephony, aux and USB connectivity. The interior just doesn’t have that premium feel sought by car buyers at this price and even quality of materials is just about average.
Mahindra’s interiors feel well built and the quality of parts are much better. The black and grey dashboard looks more premium than the Safari’s and the touchscreen infotainment system works very nicely as well. The dials are quite easy to read and fit and finish is better than on the Tata. It definitely has the better cabin. However, closer inspection reveals some patchy quality; it’s still negligible compared to the Safari.
Space & practicality
Space on the inside is humongous. The high-set and large front seats are very spacious and comfortable, and the rear bench is massive with lots of room too.
The same can’t be said about the third-row jump seats though; they are not suited for use over long journeys. But folding this row does liberate masses of space for luggage. On the whole, the Safari has the more spacious cabin and it’s decently practical too.
The Scorpio may not have the enormous cabin of the Safari but it does offer sufficient space inside. The front seats are quite comfortable and the rear seat does have sufficient space as well. Just like in the Safari, the third row has jump seats which won’t find much use, but can be folded for luggage space though there’s not as much space here as in the Tata; comfort levels are actually decent.
The more expensive Safari’s engine is available only on the top-spec VX variant which costs Rs 13.26 lakh for the 4X2 and Rs 14.60 lakh for the 4X4 variants. However, there’s no change to the equipment list. It gets electrically retractable mirrors, audio system with Bluetooth, aux and USB, and a CD player. It gets alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, two airbags and ABS also. But there’s no climate control system and for a vehicle this big, we’d have liked a reverse camera too.
The Scorpio S10 is available in both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive avatar, priced at Rs 12.63 lakh and Rs 13.76 lakh, respectively. It is more affordable than the Safari. In this top trim, it gets a touchscreen infotainment system with USB, aux-in, USB and Bluetooth telephony. There’s climate control, automatic headlamps, wipers and an automatic start-stop system as well. For safety, it gets two airbags and ABS as standard.
Tata's Safari Storme continues with its traditional strengths of unshakable ride quality and spacious interiors. The extra punch on the engine is a welcome addition and the SUV is faster now but the 2.2-litre unit still takes some time to get over its turbo lag. And given how fast competition is moving along, Tata really must do something about quality levels; the interiors simply lack the premium finish of rivals. Lack of a premium air is something that some may associate even the Mahindra Scorpio with, but all considered, it's still the better SUV. There are rough edges like the less-than-ideal ergonomics and poor low-speed ride. But It's also got a strong and refined engine, it's comfortable and levels of equipment are good for the price. Given that it is more affordable than the Tata, that's all the more reason for it to emerge the winner here.
