Inside HGTV Stars Chelsea Houska and Cole DeBoer’s Moody South Dakota Farmhouse: Photos

Teen Mom alum Chelsea Houska and husband Cole DeBoer built their dream home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before launching their own HGTV series. 

“I wanted a nice modern home, but I still want it to be comfortable and welcoming. So, that’s kind of what we went for,” she told In Touch in March 2021. “We have a lot of black in our house, and our house is black on the outside. I’m not afraid of a moody room or a moody moment. I want to keep it simple but cozy … It does look modern, but it doesn’t look like too crispy [and like you] can’t hang out.”

The home design couple have brought a lot of those elements into their work on Down Home Fab and even opened a home decor store in their home town in March 2024.

Second Living Space

The family’s basement is complete with a large living room, a small desk, a built-in bar and also features a play room, a couple bedrooms and a bathroom.

Cole built the playhouse of dreams for their children in the basement, and it even matches the exterior of their home.

Chelsea said it was very important that they had a basement in their home, and this one is the perfect spot for a comfy movie night.

WATCH: Teen Mom 2's Chelsea and Cole DeBoer Show Off South Dakota Farmhouse They 'Built from the Ground Up'

On Monday’s episode of the couple's new HGTV show Down Home Fab, they open their home to potential new clients and put their design skills on display

Chelsea and Cole DeBoer are showing off their South Dakota home!

On Monday's episode of their new HGTV show Down Home Fab , the Teen Mom 2 alum and her husband got their home ready for an open house-style party to attract potential new clients with their interior design skills — and gave viewers a look inside several personal spaces in the process.

"We thought it'd be cool for our business to invite people into our home to come check out our style and use it as a way to hopefully gain some new clients," Chelsea, 31, says in the above clip.

The segment spotlights a number of areas in the modern-rustic home, including the dramatic double-height living room complete with a brick fireplace Chelsea painted black, cowhide rugs, antlers and cozy Chesterfield sofas.

Chelsea dubs her style "South Dakota farmhouse" but adds that she's "a little bit more modern" with the application. For this house, she notes, "I really wanted to bring those rustic vibes."

Visitors were also able to tour the massive, open-plan kitchen and dining area, the primary bedroom with all black walls, the primary bathroom with a statement gold tub, her daughter Layne's pink bedroom, the bohemian back deck and a cozy TV room.

"We built this house from the ground up — we designed it ourselves" the mom-of-four adds. Cole, 34, chimes in: "Building our own home… it definitely ignited a spark."

Down Home Fab, which premiered on Jan. 16, documents the couple's launch of their South Dakota design business, which was inspired by their own home renovation. Chelsea takes on the role of designer while Cole acts as project manager.

In PEOPLE's exclusive first look at the six-episode series in January, Chelsea explained how the business started: "When we were sharing our home building and designing process on social media, we got a ton of feedback."

She adds that she's always wanted to start her own business.

"I had to grow fast. I was a single mom until I met Cole. Now life with Cole and our four kids and our business is all I ever wanted," she says. The South Dakota natives are parents to Walker June, 1, Layne Ettie, 4, and son Watson Cole, 5. Chelsea also shares a 13-year-old daughter named Aubree Skye with ex Adam Lind.

Just three episodes after the show's premiere, Chelsea shared an emotional Instagram Reel of her and her husband reacting to the news that their HGTV series was officially renewed for a second season.

"You guys don't understand how much this means to us," she says with tears in her eyes. "I have been refreshing the ratings all day because I just want to show you guys that we're doing a good job. I just feel like this means so much to us."

Cole added: "We couldn't be happier. Thank you so much, honestly. It's a dream come true. It really is, and we're extremely grateful for this opportunity. And we're going to work our asses off."

Home sweet home!  Chelsea Houska  shows off the stunning new house she shares with her husband,  Cole DeBoer , on an upcoming episode of  Teen Mom 2  and fans are in for a major treat, because her abode is absolutely stunning. The reality star was elated about purchasing the property and she gave a tour of the lavish crib to viewers. Scroll through the gallery!

Chelsea, who was pregnant with her daughter Layne at the time of filming, gave cameras a peek at the cozy new place she and hubby Cole were about to call home.

The lovebirds reportedly purchased the jaw-dropping $418,000 house located in South Dakota last July and it sits on six acres of land.

Love At First Sight

Chelsea knew she wanted to buy the place from the moment she stepped outside.

It’s perfect for a big family as the property offers plenty of  living space . According to reports, it features five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a three-car garage.

Chelsea was sporting her baby bump in the scenes and she looked cuter than ever while showing off the gorgeous interior.

We’re sure the mother-of-three’s pets are enjoying the huge backyard as much as her kids.

Making Changes

The MTV star reportedly sold her  previous home  back in August 2018. “They bought and already moved into a new one,” an insider told  Radar .

“They really wanted a house with more room and acreage for animals in the country,” the source continued.

Cole and Chelsea share two precious children together,  Watson  and Layne. The reality star also is the proud mama of daughter  Aubree , whom she shares with ex-boyfriend  Adam Lind .

Down Home DeBoers! Take a Tour of Teen Mom’s Chelsea Houska and Husband Cole DeBoer’s Farmhouse

Teen Mom 2 alum Chelsea Houska and husband Cole DeBoer had quite a journey building their dream farmhouse in South Dakota from the ground up. Of course, it turned out to be absolutely stunning and is a perfect fit for their busy family.

The MTV couple broke ground for their new house in April 2020, and Chelsea’s update the following August showed the kitchen cabinets were already being installed. The home for their family of six looks super stylish, and the reality babe confessed in March 2020 that it was a special experience building a homestead from scratch.

It’s been nearly four years and one baby later, and the family’s home is nothing short of comfy cozy.

Chelsea Houska and Cole DeBoer Are Building a Farmhouse for Family of 6: Pics

Dream home! Chelsea Houska and Cole DeBoer are giving their fans an inside glimpse into their custom farmhouse build.

“Holy crap. We are so excited for this journey,” the Teen Mom 2 star, 29, captioned her and her husband’s March reveal. “We don’t know much about building a house, BUT I have been preparing for this for years if you count Pinteresting and allllll the farmhouse Instagram pages I follow.”

The South Dakota native and DeBoer, 32, documented every step of the process, from laying the foundation and picking out interior finishes to painting and putting in stairs.

The beautician opened up in May about the “compromises” she and the traffic control specialist had to make, explaining, “Things that Cole was set on … we went with his idea. Things I was dead set on, we went with mine. Compromise the s–t out of things.”

Houska added at the time: “We went into everything having an idea of what we wanted, but we also both had an open mind. There were a couple times we went in to an appointment with a vision and came out with something completely different (and awesome!) Other times we went in knowing what we wanted and got exactly that.”

While working on their future home, the couple announced that they are expecting their third child together , Houska’s fourth.

“One more DeBoer,” the former softball player, who shares Watson , 3, and Layne , 2, with DeBoer, and Aubree, 10, with her ex-boyfriend Adam Lind , captioned an August photo of their names written on wood. “Coming early 2021.”

Later that same week, the pair used confetti cannons to reveal that they have another baby girl on the way .

While the MTV personality has found herself under fire for having such a big family, the hate “cracks” Houska up , she told Entertainment Tonight that same month.

“There’s always the comments that are like, ‘She’s pregnant again?’” she explained to the outlet. “I think a lot of people still consider or think of us as being these young or teen moms. I was like, ‘I mean, I’m married.’ … People just don’t realize that we are almost 30, I think, and married, and we’re not teenagers anymore.”

Chelsea DeBoer may have started on Teen Mom , but that's definitely not the end of her journey. Fans have seen Chelsea taking the cards that she has been dealt, both good and bad, and always making the best of her situation.

And that has lead Chelsea to her new home renovation show on HGTV , Down Home Fab , which she hosts with her husband Cole DeBoer . The show follows Chelsea and Cole as "they create and build a design business and take on client renovations, all while raising four young children ."

Chelsea and Cole reside in Soiux Falls, S.D., and actually custom built their dream home. The caption reads, "This is your sign to paint your house black." We totally agree, it looks amazing.

Chelsea and Cole actually documented their whole house building and design process on their Instagram account ( @downhomedeboers ).

On Instagram, the couple said, "We got roofing and WINDOWS! Holy. One of the things we always envisioned for the placement of this house was the view. We wanted to be able to see down the tree line and also be able to look out over the pond. I don’t know how they did it, but they lined this baby up PERFECTLY. Can’t wait to watch all the wildlife go from the trees to the pond."

Black seems to be a theme throughout their whole house. The bison picture and the antlers set the tone of the room. It's a modern, rustic, chic country home for sure. Their living room nicely ties in a black painted fire place, wood elements, camel leather, and plants to create a very home-y vibe. We mean, they are professionals after all.

Let's have a little commotion for the bathtub. We don't know about you, but we are suckers for an old school bathtub. And gold? Are you kidding? And that view? Dreams.

Lighting fixtures can make or break and room and these statement lights definitely make the kitchen. Once again, we see the black and gold together. The caption reads, "LIGHTING GOIN IN. I wanted some big statement lights above the island and these turned out to be exactly how I had imagined!!!"

Chelsea and Cole actually did an adorable walk through of their stunning home for HGTV's YouTube. In addition to what we've already seen, their house features a statement catwalk, a screened in porch where they can see wild animals running by, and a huge basement with a whole playhouse that Cole built for their kids. We definitely recommend watching because their house is literally goals.

This may be weird to say, but Chelsea, we are so proud of you! We have watched you grow up. Seeing your beautiful family and all your dreams come true just warms our hearts. Keep it up lady!

Lake House Fabulous! Inside ‘Teen Mom 2’ Alum Chelsea Houska and Cole DeBoer’s Family Cabin: Photos

When Teen Mom 2 alum Chelsea DeBoer (née Houska) and husband Cole DeBoer aren’t busy renovating homes for their upcoming HGTV series, the pair will be undertaking another house flip as they recently purchased her family’s vacation cabin. 

“10/10 recommend buying your childhood cabin,” Chelsea shared via the couple’s joint Instagram account, Down Home DeBoers, on Thursday, September 8. “SO excited for my kids to make all the great memories here that I made. LET THE PROJECTS BEGIN.”

The 4,300 square foot lakefront home sits on more than two and a half acres and features a wraparound porch that overlooks Lewis and Clark Lake on the border of Nebraska and South Dakota, according to a listing viewed by  Life & Style.

The log cabin – which was built in 2005 – boasts three bedrooms, plus a loft, and a finished basement that features a media room and a game room. 

The South Dakota-based couple are no strangers to hard work and home renovations as they took fans along on their journey as they custom built their dream home throughout 2020.

“Holy crap. We are so excited for this journey. We don’t know much about building a house, BUT I have been preparing for this for years if you count Pinteresting and allllll the farmhouse Instagram pages I follow,” Chelsea captioned a photo of her family in March of that year. 

Chelsea and Cole later announced they were expecting baby No. 4 via a sweet inscription on the home studs. 

“When we were writing blessings on the house before the drywall went up, we wrote all our names and couldn’t leave out the new babe,” the former reality star captioned a photo of all of their names. 

The pair – who were already parents to son Watson and daughters Layne and Aubree, whom Chelsea shares with ex Adam Lind – welcomed daughter Walker June in January 2021.

The MTV alum’s home build caught the eye of HGTV producers as they announced in June that they were offered their own show , Farmhouse Fabulous.

“After building our dream farmhouse in Sioux Falls a few years ago, we realized we have a real knack for design and home reno and it’s evolved into our passion,” Chelsea gushed via a press release about their new gig.

The six-episode limited series is set to premiere in Spring 2023. In the meantime, keep scrolling to see photos from inside Chelsea and Cole’s Nebraska lake house.

House Hunters: All Stars (2023)

HGTV stars take clients shopping for homes in the cities they know best, touring residential properties while advising on smart real estate investments tailored to each buyer's preferences.

House Hunters: All Stars is set to premiere on HGTV on Thursday, March 21 . With 12 brand-new episodes, the series kicks off with two back-to-back episodes on its launch date at 8 and 8:30 pm ET/PT. New episodes will also be available to watch on Max the same day they air on HGTV .

Although the trailer for House Hunters: All Stars is unavailable at the moment, HGTV has shared a glimpse of what’s to come in the series premiere.

The first episode, at 8 p.m., kickstarts with Mina Starsiak Hawk of Good Bones as the reliable home expert. Bringing audiences all the way to Indianapolis, Mina meets Sienna, an artist on the lookout to buy a fixer-upper. Sounds like the right job for Mina. If there’s one thing Mina is well capable of, it’s breathing new life into even the oldest properties. Before narrowing down three permission options within the area, Mina lays down the basics. Sienna will need to consider a couple of crucial things, such as her priorities, the historic character of the house, the need for a backyard, and rental income potential.

Later, the show’s second episode at 8.30 p.m. stars none other than Down Home Fab ’s Chelsea and Cole DeBoer . The husband and wife lend their expertise to couple Tim and Angie, who are eyeing a larger property within the Sioux Falls region. If that isn’t enough of a challenge, Tim and Angie are also hoping to have a home theater and a cat patio. No request is too big or too small for Chelsea and Cole.

The original House Hunters series follows individuals, couples, or families who are looking into buying a new home with the help of a local real estate agent. Typically, each episode features three potential properties that buyers might be interested in. The catch? Buyers will need to decide by the end of the episode. Later on, the show concludes by revisiting these buyers a few weeks or months after they have purchased their property, in which participants share how the new home has affected their lives and whether their feelings have changed about the property they bought.

What makes House Hunters: All Stars special is that buyers will be accompanied by HGTV’s very own leading experts. Over the years, the network has showcased an incredible lineup of real estate agents, renovation experts, and restoration consultants with stellar track records and portfolios to boot. House Hunters: All Stars is produced by Pie Town Productions, and presented by HGTV. The idea for the House Hunters franchise dates back as far as 1998. Just like the participants featured in the show, producers Davidson and Sandler were simply looking to buy a house in Los Angeles. The two also had their fair share of agonizing pains throughout their house-hunting journey.

As Tara shares with HGTV :

“We’re at this particular house in Studio City that had a really odd layout, but it had this gorgeous outdoor space with a big pool. We're agonizing, going, well, the outdoor area is great but the indoor area is not so great, but we could fix that. But how much is that gonna cost?"

It didn’t take long until the two came up with the idea of their show. No matter what part of the country you’re from, home buyers deal with more or less similar problems. Whether it’s budget constraints or renovation concerns, the tiring journey associated with house hunting became the very basis of House Hunters .

HGTV's Chelsea DeBoer Shows How To Incorporate Old Furniture Into A Modern Home

I n a home renovation, it's typical for homeowners to find ways to update old family heirlooms and well-loved pieces so they can seamlessly fit into the new setup. They can be remade into something new, reupholstered with new materials, or simply repainted to give them a fresh look. That's what Chelsea DeBoer did in Season 1, Episode 1 of "Down Home Fab" with a vintage piano. She chose chalk paint specifically because it enhanced the vintage effect and was very easy to apply.

The clients in this episode wanted their home to have a more cohesive design and weren't afraid to try new things, so DeBoer was excited to make some bold statements. One of her tasks was to figure out how to get their beloved vintage piano to match the home's new style. The piano had a nice, wooden color but would be out of place in the "glam-ranch" aesthetic they were going for in the open floor plan kitchen and dining room, so she chose to paint it black to match the black cabinets. Rita, DeBoer's stepmom and a restoration expert, recommended chalk paint for this project.

Chalk Paint Can Transform Old Furniture

"Chalk paint is named for its chalky, matte finish. It's water-based. It doesn't drip much. And, chalk paint is gonna give this very distinctive look," explained Chelsea DeBoer. People choose to work with chalk paint because it adds a distressed character to surfaces and has the unique ability to be applied without the need for extensive surface preparation like sanding or priming. "We don't have to sand it," said Rita, talking about the piano. "Cause chalk paint sticks to mostly everything."

This makes it a great tool for transforming old or worn pieces. You can find virtually any chalk paint color to match the decor and the finish will style up the vintage look. DeBoer's goal was to connect the kitchen and dining room zones. She was successful because, by the end of the "Down Home Fab" episode, the piano looked like a modern piece. Chalk paint is great for DIYers of any level to experiment with and try new things. There's nothing to lose and a lot to gain when working on old furniture pieces, as you might be able to upcycle something you were ready to throw out and find a new use for it in your home.

How To Use Chalk Paint

Chalk paint was created and developed by Annie Sloan , making that an ideal place to get it. The paint comes in a wide range of colors and costs between $16 and $45, depending on the amount you get. They offer color cards and sample pots if you need to try something out first. To prep the surface of your furniture, all you need to do is wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or finishes. You can also sand it to make it smoother if you want. Note that a laminated surface will need a bit of sanding to make the surface easier for the paint to adhere to.

This water-based paint is thick, doesn't drip, and needs just one or two coats to do the job, so apply the chalk paint using a high-quality brush or roller and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. In the "Down Home Fab" episode, it takes only one coat for the piano to get an improved look. You can also use the brush to create texture as you go. When you're done painting, apply a wax or varnish to seal it so the paint can last on your good-as-new furniture piece.
