UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days Tour

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

We booked a small group tour, advertised as 12 people in a minibus, we were actually 43 people on a standard large coach. We enjoyed the tour anyway, the coach was comfortable and radio transmitters and headsets made it possible to follow the commentary from the back of the group. Our guide Lucy, was very friendly and helpful and organised everything well, including wake up calls! There was however, some pressure to join optional activities, at extra cost. We went to Pisa and an excellent local guide made it an enjoyable experience. We were upgraded to be in Venice rather than Mestre, and the hotel there was especially lovely. The standard hotel in Florence was very pleasant but a bus ride away from the city centre. The set meals improved as the tour went on but only the final lunch in Montepulciano was above average. The included activities were mainly visits to cathedrals and basilicas with their incredible art. Some variety would have been good e.g. the Doge's palace in Venice. The 5 day tour didn't include any activities in Rome though we could have bought Vatican museum or sightseeing bus tickets by the same tour company, before we arrived. Overall it was a great way to see some of Italy's most picturesque towns / cities in a short time.

If you want to see a lot of Italy in a short amount of time this is the tour for you! Our guides and driver were fantastic. They took all the guess work out of the equation with their guidance on Italian culture and recommendations of good restaurants and safe areas to visit during free time. Be prepared for a lot of walking as much of Italy is best accessed via walking tours. There is beauty around every corner. If walking is difficult for you, be warned that the handicapped accessibility is not near the standard we find in the USA. All of our hotels were great—clean and comfortable. The bus was well appointed and had free WiFi.

Excellent communication with the Operator who were quick to respond and were able to organize a night in our departure hotel for a cheaper rate than I could find on other websites. The tour itself was busy, but we had a great guide, Nancy, who was extremely knowledgeable about all things Italy. She gave us advice on what to see and do in our spare time and get the most out of the time we had at each stop. It was our first-ever coach tour and I don't know what were were scared of; the other travellers were fun, the coach was comfortable and the way the route was structured, we never spent more than 90mins on board!

Reviews of Bologna Tours

Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.
We loved our trip with Explore in Emilia-Remagna! It was the perfect mix of walking through beautiful cities and countrysides and eating delicious food. As always on our tours with Explore, we met interesting people and had great conversations along the way. Our guide, Sonia, was enthusiastic, professional, and helpful! 15 Best Bologna Tours

Located in northern Italy, Bologna is the capital and most populous city in the country’s Emilia-Romagna region and has about 400,000 residents.

Perhaps more than any other place in the country, Bologna is home to a diverse array of inhabitants of more than 100 nationalities. It’s situated between the Savena and Reno rivers, adjacent to the foothills of the Apennine Mountains.

It’s known for its amazing cuisines, supercar manufacturers, and abundant historical attractions, but it tends to get fewer visitors than other Italian cities like Rome and Venice.

Below are 15 of the best tours of Bologna that rank highly on many visitor’s itineraries.

1. Experience Bologna with a Local: Customized Private Meet-Up

Aerial View of Bologna

For those who’d rather let a travel and tourism professional handle all the pesky details, this private, customizable tour of Bologna with a local guide would be a great fit.

Guests need only contact the tour provider, answer a few questions about interests and preferences, and they’ll put together an itinerary just for you and your travel companions.

Tours include many of Bologna’s most significant historical and cultural attractions and some that are slightly off the beaten path as well.

Options include two, four, six, and even eight-hour excursions that start with a brief meet and greet with a local host.

2. Bologna Theme Tour: Europe’s Oldest University

Archiginnasio Palace

Some visitors are surprised when they learn that Europe’s oldest university isn’t in England or France, but in Bologna, Italy.

Bologna’s university was established in the 11th century, and the campus is home to a number of worthwhile attractions, including monuments to the founders, instructors, and students dating back to the Middle Ages.

On this value-packed, two and a half hour themed tour, guests will follow their experienced local guide’s lead and explore many of the historic city’s most iconic sites.

Tours also include the Renaissance Palazzo and the Archiginnasio Palace.

Food, drinks, and admission tickets aren’t included, so bring a few extra bucks.

3. City Center Walking Tour

Piazza Maggiore in Bologna

For those who’d rather not waste valuable vacation time crammed into a bus full of warm-bodied tourists, walking tours are great ways to see things up-close-and personally and get an idea of Bologna’s layout.

Tours get underway at the centrally located Piazza del Nettuno. After a brief tour overview, participants will set out to explore city attractions, including the Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica of San Petronio, and the world’s oldest library at Piazza Santo Stefano.

Despite its relatively moderate Mediterranean climate, the weather can get warm, so it’s wise to dress appropriately and bring hats and sunglasses if you’ll be visiting during the summer months.

4. Full-Day Ferrari Experience

Ferrari Museum in Maranello

With their powerful engines, sleek lines, and exorbitant price tags, Ferrari’s aren’t exactly everyday cars. But for those visiting Bologna, there are many inexpensive ways to experience them in all their glory.

This full-day tour is all about the iconic Italian automaker, and its centerpiece is the official Ferrari Museum just up the road in Maranello.

Each outing includes guided factory and test track tours and a trip to Enzo Ferrari’s home in Modeno, after which everyone will head to a local farm just outside of town for a traditional lunch.

Tours last about eight hours and include moderate amounts of walking.

5. Red Bus City Tour and Local Food Tasting

Red Bus City Tour in Bolgona

For much of the year, Bologna’s weather is perfect for being outdoors. Touring the city in an open-air bus is an excellent option for those who want to feel like they’re outside without spending tons of energy walking or riding a bike.

Red Bus tours offer audio guides in multiple languages. At each attraction, guests will get a historical overview of what they’re seeing and decide whether or not they’d like to depart and take a closer look.

Tours include optional food tastings, and stops at the Basilica San Petronio, Palazzo dei Notai, and Palazzo Comunale, to name just a few.

6. 3-Hour Secret Food Tour

Bologna Food Tour

Bologna’s Quadrilatero neighborhood is one of the city’s culinary hotspots, and it just so happens to be the starting point for this popular 3-hour secret food tour.

Whereas many food tours tend to hit well-known locations, this one focuses on those that get less traffic.

That means a more memorable and authentic experience, as well as lots of opportunities to mingle with locals, learn about the city’s history and culture, and taste amazing traditional and contemporary foods.

Tours include six stops and samples of everything from aged balsamic vinegar and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese to homemade pasta and cured meats.

7. Private and Personalized Best of Bologna Walking Experience

Old Town of Bologna

At least in the United States, we generally associate Bologna with overly processed logs of mystery meat manufactured in places like Kansas City and New Jersey.

Thankfully for travelers, Italy’s Bologna bears no resemblance to the aforementioned product.

In fact, it’s an exotic locale known for its stunning natural beauty, abundant historical attractions, friendly people, and vibrant cuisine. It may be best experienced on private and personalized walking tours like this one.

Tours include customizable itineraries, the services of a local guide, and pick-up from your Bologna accommodation.

Expect to get away from other tourists, rub elbows with locals, and see the city from a unique perspective.

8. Torre degli Asinelli & Food Tasting

Torre degli Asinelli

Built more than 900 years ago and reaching nearly 300 feet into the blue sky, Torre degli Asinelli is Italy’s tallest tower, and one of Bologna’s main attractions.

For those who’ve got the nerve and stamina to make it to the top, it’ll take nearly 500 steps, but the views are remarkable and well worth the effort.

After visiting and learning about the tour, guests will enjoy a food tasting that includes traditional local, regional, and national dishes like pasta, cheeses, and baked goods.

The cost of admission to the tower is included, and guests get an ice cream voucher to enjoy later when the tour is over.

9. Cooking Class and Dinner with a Local Cook

Bologna Cooking Class

Italians love to eat, and many of them are equally as passionate about sharing their culture and cuisine with visitors from all over the world.

For those who consider themselves diehard foodies and amateur chefs, this cooking class and dinner with a local cook option is a great way to spend a fun, engaging, and educational evening.

The activity centers on Bolognese cuisine and naturally includes the preparation of traditional pasta and sauces using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Wine, camaraderie, hands-on time in the kitchen, a three-course meal, and warm Italian hospitality are also included.

10. LGBT Bologna: Book a Local and Likeminded Friend

Fontana di Nettuno in Bologna

It’s commonly said that money can’t buy friends, but this LGBT-centered tour of Bologna offers visitors the chance to do just that.

Forget traditional travel guides with their canned narratives and rigid itineraries; this private, personalized tour option is customizable and geared toward the globe-trotting LGBT crowd.

Before booking, prospective participants will answer a few questions about their interests and preferences. Shortly thereafter, they’ll receive an itinerary and a message from a likeminded guide.

Tours depart from a convenient location, and at any time during the excursion, the guide and guests may jointly decide to change things up if the collective spirit moves them.

11. Yummy Italian Food and Wine Tour with Long Lunch

Bologna Food and Wine Tour

Like yummy Italian food and long, relaxing lunches in idyllic settings?

If so, the pre-tour questionnaire is officially done, and it’s time to get down to what makes this eight-hour tour such a big hit.

First, it’s all about Bologna’s culture and food traditions and includes a local epicurean guide and pick-up and drop off from a number of convenient central Bologna locations.

Guests will visit facilities that produce Parmesan cheese, prosciutto, balsamic vinegar, and wine.

They’ll learn about how these staples of Italian cuisine are made, sample until their hearts are content, and enjoy an epic six-course lunch with wine in a family-owned restaurant.

12. Ferrari, Pagani, and Lamborghini Museum and Factory Tour

Lamborghini Museum

When it comes to being home to more supercar manufacturers than anywhere else in the world, Italy is a clear standout.

Featuring world-renowned brands like Ferrari, Pagani, and Lamborghini, Bologna, and the surrounding areas are like playgrounds for car enthusiasts who come from near and far.

Tours include an English speaking guide, pick-up from the train station, airport, or your hotel in Bologna, as well as visits to the factories and museums of the previously mentioned automakers.

Test drives at each location are optional. Though they’re exhilarating, they may not be a good fit for those traveling on budgets.

13. FICO Eataly World 1-Hour Tour

FICO Eataly World

Bologna’s FICO Eataly World is a one-stop attraction for those looking for maximum exposure to the wonders of Italian cuisine without spending a whole day doing it.

This one-hour guided tour includes aspects of agriculture, history, culture, and food. Despite its short length, it is often counted as one of the visitors’ most memorable experiences.

The facility includes dozens of restaurants and cafés, street food vendors, and markets and shops that make for a truly unique experience.

Due to FICO Eataly’s vastness, many visitors choose to visit again in subsequent days, and it’s an especially big hit for those traveling with kids.

14. Train to San Luca Basilica with Food Tasting from Bologna

San Luca Basilica

Regardless of age and interests, it’s common for many visitors to spend all their vacation time in Bologna without venturing into the country.

For some, however, day-trips and side excursions are fun ways to broaden their horizons and leave the urban setting behind.

This train and food combo tour begins and ends in Bologna, includes audio guides in eight languages, and is available multiple times daily.

Each guest gets a train schedule before departing, which makes it possible to explore San Luca Basilica and other attractions at their own pace without fear of getting left behind.

Guests also get vouchers for food tastings.

15. 3-Hour Guided Walking Tour

Basilica of San Petronio

Short tours like this three-hour walking option are great ways to experience Bologna without setting aside a whole day.

Many of Bologna’s landmarks and attractions are centrally located, which makes seeing them in conjunction with one another relatively easy.

On this tour, guests will see the Fountain of Neptune, Piazza Maggiore, and the Mercato de Mezzo—one of the city’s main culinary attractions, where many residents and restaurateurs buy their ingredients daily.

For those who wish to take things to the next level, it’s possible to take advantage of extra-cost options like food and wine tastings and visiting the Anatomical Theatre of the Archiginnasio.

So explore with us the things you should not miss during a stay in Bologna!

Things to do in Bologna, Italy: the 10 best things you shouldn't miss

things to do in bologna

The nicknames of Bologna are almost endless. We identify it with one color, red ; we call it "la Dotta" ("the Erudite") because one of the oldest universities in the world is located here. We call it "la Grassa" ("the Fat") because of its exquisite cuisine. Yet, the nicknames did not end there.

We also call it "Turrita" ("Towered"), for its beautiful skyline embellished with slender towers , and also "porticata" ("Porticoed"). After all, we know well, that if we want to explore the capital of Emilia on a rainy day, the umbrella may not even be needed.

In short, a city that, since the rich array of nicknames, presents itself as a jewel with infinite facets. In this article, we wish to introduce you to at least 10 of them .

Here, then, are the 10 unmissable things to do in the beautiful Bologna .

10. A walking tour of the City of Porticoes

best things to do in bologna italy

We anticipated this already in the introduction. One of the most interesting things to do in Bologna is precisely to walk through the streets of the city, going from one portico to another. You will find that, in this way, you will be able to cover much of the historic center.

However, if you want to learn more about the city of Bologna and go beyond the clichés (and the usual familiar sights!), we definitely suggest joining a guided tour .

Not only will you be able to appreciate more of the city's turbulent history and rich architecture , but you will also learn about its curiosities and secrets that make it one of the most popular destinations in our country.

9. The climb to the world's tallest leaning medieval tower

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Doriana - Not Carla (@carlacaracalla)

tours to bologna italy

We cannot say we have been to the capital of Emilia if we have not visited the Two Towers of Bologna, the most symbolic place in the entire city.

Well, the Asinelli Tower itself, at 97 meters high (318 ft), is believed to be one of the tallest leaning medieval towers in the world . It was erected in about 10 years, starting in 1109, and is one of 20 towers that you can still see adorning the Bologna skyline today.

Imagine the thrill of climbing its steps (nearly 500) and overlooking one of the most picturesque views in the entire city? At the end of the experience, you can refresh yourself with a tasting of local products.

8. A day among the excellence of Italian food and wine

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fashion - Wine - Happinessmood (@lacrusia)

Why FICO Eataly World is such a great fair? In fact, it continues to attract thousands of visitors every year. As a matter of fact, the number is growing month by month, so much so that we have come to count 3 million visits over the course of an entire year!

Why so many visitors are fascinated by the  world's largest fairs dedicated to food and wine ?

On the one hand, there is the desire for discovery of excellence whose fame has crossed Italian borders for decades. On the other, however, there is also the opportunity to touch the endless delights of the Italian cuisine . You can not only taste and taste, but also touch them with your own hands. Here you can access workshops and courses to create the perfect Neapolitan pizza or even gelato!

7. Things to do in Bologna: the discovery of Accursi Tower and its great clock

thing to do in bologna italy

We are located in Piazza Maggiore, and this tower is part of the splendid Palazzo d'Accursio.

Many, however, know it because one of the largest clocks in Italy is located here, with a diameter of no less than 6.40 meters (20 ft)! For this reason, the Accursi Tower is also known as the Clock Tower of Bologna.

Why come here? For two reasons, essentially, of which we do not know which to prioritize. On the one hand, in fact, you will be able to see with your own eyes the complex and mesmerizing mechanism that makes the majestic clock work.

On the other hand, however, you will be able to visit the splendid municipal collections housed on the top floor of the Palace and learn more about the history, including artistic history, of the city. It's indeed one of the greatest things to do in Bologna!

6. A tasteful stop at the local market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Massimo Macchioro (@__massimomacchioro__)

One of the most famous and picturesque districts of this city is undoubtedly the Quadrilatero.

So, if you are in Bologna, you cannot miss taking a walk through its splendid market , considered one of the oldest in the country. In its narrow streets, side by side, you will find craft stores and old stores where, from generation to generation, arts and crafts have been handed down.

The best way to visit this neighborhood, however, in our opinion, is also from a taste perspective! Tasting and sampling local products is a must , and we have found a way to make this experience convenient and super easy !

5. Among the best things to do in Bologna: a tour of its greatest Basilica

unmissable things to do in bologna italy

San Petronio is the largest basilica in the entire city . It is located in Piazza Maggiore and strikes visitors with its unfinished façade : in fact, the lower band is covered with marble, according to the 14th- and 16th-century style, while the upper band still has exposed bricks.

This great Bolognese basilica, however, is also worth a visit inside. In fact, you'll find the oldest organ in the world still working, made at the end of the 15th century, and the splendid Chapel of the Three Kings, with frescoes of Heaven and Hell. Don't forget to visit Cassini's sundial , one of the tallest in the world!

The church is generally open daily and admission is free.

4. The splendor of the world's longest portico

unmissable things to do in bologna

Yes, we are not only in the so-called "City of Porticoes", but also in the place with the longest portico in the world .

And how to visit it? You could decide to walk it (3.5 km /2.17 mi on an incline), or observe it comfortably aboard the San Luca Express.

This fabulous tourist train , in fact, will take you from the historic center to the Colle della Guardia. Right here is the Basilica of San Luca, the destination of one of Italy's most important Marian pilgrimages . You will have plenty of time to visit the church, the arcades and observe the magnificent panorama, softened by the wooded area that surrounds the hill. At the end, a new train will take you back to the center.

3. A walk in the Villa Spada Park.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @mr.clio

If walking around Colle della Guardia has made you crave a bit of nature, among the things to do in Bologna we certainly suggest you go to Villa Spada Park .

It covers a good 6 hectares and is embellished with beautiful holm oaks, laurels, cypresses and typical Mediterranean scrub vegetation . There is also an area dedicated to woodland, with dogwoods, maples and hawthorns, as well as a beautiful Italian garden embellished with statues.

As you climb the higher elevations of the park, you can also enjoy splendid views of the center.

2. The tour of the oldest seat of the University of Bologna

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fabian Fröhlich (@blindbild.berlin)

The Archiginnasio is one of the most important buildings in the entire capital, as well as the ancient seat of the University .

In fact, the oldest university in the world was founded here in 1088. In fact, the term "University" was coined right here.

So, how great can be the excitement of delving into the discovery of this ancient place? You can learn about its history and vicissitudes, but also visit its most important places. In fact, you will be able to access the Municipal Library but also the splendid Anatomical Theater , rebuilt after World War II. Be sure to purchase skip-the-line tickets!

You might choose to visit Bologna's Piazza Maggiore in the very heart of the city, where you can see the elegant facades of many important buildings, like the Basilica of San Petronio and the Palazzo dei Notai.

In the evening there'll be a group meeting where you can meet your tour manager and prepare for the following days' excursions, depending on timings the meeting may take place the next morning.

This morning you'll enjoy a delicious food tour of Bologna, where you'll have the opportunity to learn about this beautiful city through its fascinating history and, of course, taste its world-renowned food. The city is famous for delicacies like mortadella sausage and tagliatelle al ragù - aka spaghetti bolognese.

In the afternoon you'll travel to Modena, a quintessential Italian city known for its operatic heritage and as being the home of Ferrari and Lamborghini sports cars. Once you've checked into your hotel you'll have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Perhaps you'll choose to visit the Ferrari museum to learn more about Modena's connections to the luxury Italian brand. You can also pay a visit to Modena's magnificent 12th-century duomo.

This morning you'll pay a visit to a local Balsamic vineyard where you'll learn about the history of Balsamic vinegar as well as the patience and care required to produce the very best vinegar.

You'll have the opportunity to taste various different ages of Balsamic to get a true understanding of the art of vinegar making.

After your tour and tasting, you'll be taken for your next experience; learning to cook with a Modena local. This experience not only allows you to learn about the local cooking but gives you the opportunity to learn more about the local culture and customs from your hospitable hosts.

After lunch you'll have the rest of the day at your leisure to explore more of Modena, or simply relax in the hotel.

In the morning you'll visit a local Parmesan factory to learn about the interesting and intricate process required to produce the region's most popular cheese. Then, of course, you'll get to taste different ages of Parmesan with various condiments to complement and enhance the flavour.

Next you'll pay a visit to a local family-run Parma ham producer to learn about the painstaking process of creating Italy's most famous ham, which you'll also get to sample plenty of too.

Then you'll be taken to the city of Parma itself, where you'll have some time to explore and have lunch before travelling back to Bologna to spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Today you'll have a day to yourself to explore Bologna at your own pace. You'll have picked up plenty of tips on where to dine from your guides and from locals, from cheap eats to fancier restaurants, so now's your chance to try them for yourself and discover why Bologna is considered one of Italy's best foodie cities.

Check out of the hotel in the morning and transfer to the airport for your flight home, as your gourmet tour comes to an end. If your flight is later in the day, you'll be able to leave your luggage at reception and enjoy a little more of Bologna before heading home.

Tastes & Traditions of Bologna: Food Tour with Market Visit

Discover Bologna with a expert Devour foodie guide.

  • Enjoy nine food tastings and three drinks at eight beloved eateries in Bologna. Enough food for a full lunch.
  • Watch fresh pasta be made before your eyes at a market stall whose young team is dedicated to keeping this centuries-old tradition alive.
  • Learn why spaghetti bolognese isn't as authentic as you might think as you taste a delicious homemade alternative at a cozy trattoria.
  • Snack on charcuterie and sip a glass of wine at Bologna's oldest tavern, with nearly 600 years of history under its belt.

Tour description

Please note that this description is an example and stops or tastes may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have a delicious experience.

Discover why Bologna is home to some of Italy's most cherished cuisine on a carefully crafted food tour.

With a local guide leading you through Bologna, the bustling city will be your oyster. Discover incredible food stalls as you taste your way through the market, hear fascinating stories about Bologna's history, and find out what inspires local chefs. Navigating Bologna's maze-like streets and alleys with your guide by your side, you'll be experiencing the city a local in no time. By the time lunch rolls around, you'll have experienced some of the best places to eat in town on an unforgettable Bologna food tour.

Navigate a bustling market with a local expert and meet our friends behind the stalls.

Start your Bologna food tour Italian style by grabbing an espresso and a treat from the oldest pastry shop in town. Then head straight to Bologna's gastronomic highlight: its food market. Surrounded by locals doing their daily grocery shopping, you'll try some delicious local cheese while meeting the father-and-son duo behind the stall, witness fresh pasta being made right before your eyes (and taste it for yourself), sample the famous local mortadella, and bite into fresh local ingredients grown nearby.

Experience both the classic and the contemporary of Bologna's food scene.

Next, you'll head to one of Bologna's most storied bars for a journey back in time—over 550 years back, to be exact! At this historic locale—the oldest wine bar in the city—you'll sip a glass of local wine while snacking on some of the cured meats we picked up at the market.

No Bologna food tour would be complete without trying the city's most iconic pasta: tagliatelle bolognese. You'll taste it at a cozy trattoria that's helping bring traditional Emilian cuisine into the modern age.

Your food tour ends on a sweet note with a delicious regional dessert. By the time you part ways from your guide and small group, you'll see that Bologna truly is Italy’s secret food capital.

Exploring Bologna is best done through its cuisine. Eating your way through this stunning city gives you an unparalleled insight into its history and culture—a connection that otherwise remains untold.

Great food tour, with a great guide and good company

Nov 23, 2023

The tour was great, we tried the best delicacies and learn a lot about parmigiano pasta and prosciutto. We also got to explore some of the main sights in Bologna!

Oct 27, 2023

We had a fabulous time eating and drinking our way around Bologna, would recommend this tour to anyone who is hungry and interested in culture in Bologna!

Oct 13, 2023

We really enjoyed the tour with an excellent guide! The only suggestion would be it was too much food in a short period of time. Would love more of a taste than (for example) a small sandwich.

This is a very relaxed and informative tour of Bologna. Plenty of tasty food along the way. Highly recommend this tour

italy weekend breaks

Italy weekend breaks: 10 of the best places for short breaks

Long weekends away don't get better than these

As a country that offers ancient cities, like Venice and Florence , the turquoise waters of Sardinia and rolling hills of Tuscany , there's something for everyone looking for a short break to Italy.

To show you why you don't need a whole week to take in Italy, we've picked the best destinations for a long weekend.

We've picked the best destinations for Italy weekend breaks to show you why you don't need a whole week or more to take in the beautiful country.

Unique is a word that you hear a lot when reading about holiday destinations – but it’s fair to say that Italy’s iconic floating city deserves the title. Thanks to its wealthy past as an independent republic, the city is literally packed with architectural and artistic wonders, from the magnificence of the famous Rialto to stunning frescos tucked away in tiny backwater churches.

Italy weekend breaks - Venice

The flight time from London to Venice is a little over two hours, making it an easy journey for a few nights. There are many contenders for the best hotel in Venice , but one of our favourites is the famous Hotel Danieli . Not only is it beautifully luxurious and historical, but it also featured in the James Bond movie Moonraker and The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie.

If it’s sun, sea and sand you’re after, then look no further than Sicily. The island off the tip of Italy’s boot is home to Roman and Greek monuments, rolling fields and irresistibly charming fishing villages.

Italy weekend breaks - Sicily

The Sicilian diet is classically Mediterranean, with a big emphasis on fresh seafood drizzled with the finest olive oil and locally grown herbs – heaven on a plate alongside a glass of cold wine. One of our favourite spots on the island is Taormina, where you can buy delicious cannoli, wander the old streets, and get the cable car up the mountainside to visit the Teatro Greco amphitheatre. Fly into Catania, then it’s just an hour’s drive north. Another hotspot is, of course, the capital of Sicily, Palermo. And those looking to spend a memorable weekend here should look to book Villa Igiea, a grand Belle Époque residence masterfully restored by the Rocco Forte hotel group.

South Tyrol

Unique among Italian destinations thanks to its Austrian heritage, South Tyrol is full of dazzling scenery, lush vineyards and pretty mountain villages. It's also just a hop away, with just a two-hour flight duration from London to Innsbruck. While cities like Bolzano have a more obviously northern Italian feel, you’ll find plenty of Austrian influence in the region’s cuisine.

Expect menus that feature pizzas alongside schnitzel and wheat beers. Great for a long weekend of hikes and stunning views, or a chic city break, South Tyrol combines everything that’s great about both Italy and Austria. For a lovely, luxurious stay in the region, look no further than Rosa Alpina in the quaint village of San Cassiano.

Tuscany’s rural beauty is irresistible and even a short stay in the countryside here will have you forgetting the stresses of everyday life. Its cities are wonderful too, with so much history and culture around every corner. Florence , the capital, is famous for its magnificent churches and cathedrals, but small enough to explore on foot on a romantic weekend, popping in and out of gorgeously stylish boutiques that line the maze of streets.

When it’s time for a bite to eat, plump for something traditional in a trattoria, or visit an outpost of one of many contemporary Tuscan chefs who are reinventing the classics. For all-out luxury during a stay in Florence, head for the Four Seasons outpost in the city, which is majestically set in a Renaissance palazzo amid 11 acres of grounds.

This dreamy medieval city is the perfect romantic getaway. Though it’s famous for the often-imitated and endlessly adapted pasta dish that takes its name, Bologna is far more than just a foodie haven (although you’ll definitely eat well there!).

italy weekend breaks  bologna, emilia romagna, italy

Visit for charming alleyway bars, lively piazzas and ramshackle Renaissance beauty. In short, it’s a quintessential Italian escape. There's also a wealth of enchanting countryside to explore in the wider Emilia-Romagna region, characterised by gently rolling hills carpeted with vineyards, olive groves, and orchards.

To make the most of town and country, check in to the inimitable Palazzo Di Varignana in the Bolognese countryside just a short drive from the city. This award-winning spa resort is perfect for a long week where you'll be worlds away from the stresses of everyday life, yet within easy reach of all Bologna's foodie delights.

The perfect blend of historic discoveries, an air of romance, and sensational food make Rome an Italy weekend break no-brainer. With so many artistic and architectural masterpieces, Rome could rest on its legacies, but there’s a modernity to the city to experience over a weekend here – lively pizzerias and elegant wine bars to sip the crisp whites grown on the Castelli Romani hillsides.

italy weekend breaks

It's a city to return to time and time again, but first-timers shouldn’t miss its most famous location – the epic Colosseum, which was the heart of the gladiator dramas of ancient Rome. To be close to all the key sightseeing spots, splash out on a room in the legendary Hotel Eden , one of the city's most prestigious five-star hotels and a romantic haven for a weekender in the Eternal City.

Synonymous with Italy’s fashion industry, Milan is Italy’s design and style central. The g ateway to the Italian Lakes , it’s too often rushed through in pursuit of the dazzling Lake Como – particularly in the summer when the temperatures rise. But there’s plenty to explore on a weekend break here.

italy weekend breaks

Admire the magnificent pink-hued Duomo, a Gothic cathedral crafted in Candoglia marble. Then stroll down Via Montenapoleone for window shopping, Milan style. And when evening rolls around, feast on the aperitivi that appear in the chic bars where theatre and opera-goers sip on pre-show cocktails. If you're looking to stay in a grande dame hotel at the heart of it all, don't miss Principe di Savoia, a gilded gem of a property that's full of the great and the good of the city, plus discerning international travellers.

Although it's well worth lingering in Milan , Lake Como (which is just a short drive from the city) remains a classic in the realm of Italy weekend breaks. The scenery is quite simply stunning and unlike anywhere else in the world, with placid lakes surrounded by undulating mountains. The gardens are glorious too, so the green-fingered will delight in a stay here. And while sparkling Lake Maggiore and lesser-known Lake Lugano are also well worth a visit, you can't really beat Lake Como for a couple of days of indulgent relaxation.

italy weekend breaks

There are many, many glamorous five-star hotels that surround Italy's most famous lake, but to soak up the cinematic dolce vita style from a modern classic, choose Il Sereno . It's spacious suites offer some of the best lake views possible, and guests can take the hotel's own Riva out for a spin (self-drive tours mean you'll be behind the wheel) when the mood to explore strikes.

The Amalfi Coast is so gorgeous, it can feel like no amount of time there is enough – so why not start with a long weekend? A quick flight to Naples and a ferry will get you to this (there's simply no better word) iconic destination, which is sun-soaked and splendid throughout the spring and summer months.

italy weekend breaks

For an unforgettable stay, check in to Palazzo Avino , a 12th-century private villa turned five-star haven in the tiny village of Ravello. It's considered to be among the finest hotels in the world and there's a Michelin-starred restaurant, so this is certainly treat territory, but as it's just for the weekend, why not?

If you've already visited Lake Como and fancy a change, consider the beautiful Lake Garda . Known for its crystal clear waters and striking scenery, you can spend the days here cruising the waters by boat, taking in the majestic Dolomites and stopping off at pretty towns like Salò and Sirmione in the south, with its harbour-facing fortress.

italy weekend breaks

As for where to stay in Lake Garda, why not make a wellness weekend of it? For that, look no further than Lefay Resort & Spa , an internationally acclaimed temple of wellbeing that overlooks Lake Garda, nestled among the Dolomites. Indulge in spa treatments or enjoy a bespoke weekend retreat.

Florence Celebrates 100-day Countdown To Tour De France's 'Grand Depart'

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme in front of 2024 route map

With just 100 days to go before cycling's Tour de France sets off, organisers described the 2024 Grand Depart in Florence as "a dream come true".

At the foot of the Palazzo Vecchio the director of the Tour, Christian Prudhomme, savoured the dream coming true "in an open-air museum".

This year marks the 111th running of the Tour de France with the peloton embarking from Italy for the first time in its history on June 29.

"Seeing the banners and the countdown clocks for the Tour de France here, in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, an open-air museum, is powerful," Prudhomme said.

The fact no Italian city has ever hosted the event was described as an incongruity given some of the great champions in the race are Italian such as Marco Pantani, Vincenzo Nibali, Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali.

Florence came close 10 years ago to hosting the start but Bradley Wiggins' victory in 2012 pushed organisers to favour the UK, thus putting the Tuscan candidacy on hold.

Florentine mayor Dario Nardella however reached out, in the middle of Covid confinement, sending a text message to Prudhomme saying: "Florence so beautiful and so deserted. I have not forgotten the dream of the Grand Depart."

Celebrating the countdown, Florence is draped in the Tour de France yellow and even the Palazzo Vecchio was lit-up in the colour worn by the race leader.

"It's deeply satisfying, we feel a great sense of pride," said two-time Tour stage winner Daniele Bennati, now coach of the Italian national team.

"I would have dreamed of taking this start when I was a rider. Florence offers a picture-postcard setting. For the public it will be extraordinary."

The first stage will run over a hilly 205km from Florence to Rimini on the Adriatic coast while the second leaves the Emilia-Romagna town of Cesena and ends in University town Bologna. The third goes from Piacenza to Turin.

Nardella added the event would "remain, I hope, as an unforgettable thing in the history of the Tour de France."

"We want to set up the fan zone in Piazza Santa Croce, in front of one of the most beautiful churches in the world. And the start line will be in Piazza della Signoria where we will have works of Donatello and Michelangelo," he said.

Nardella added he hoped the event would boost professional cycling in the region.

"The three Italian stages pass through three UNESCO world heritage sites, the centre of Florence, the arcades of Bologna and the landscapes of southern Piedmont," he said.

"The Tour de France is too important an event to be reduced to a tourist promotion tool. We lack great champions. Relaunching cycling in Italy is for us more important than promoting tourism," insisted the mayor.

The fourth stage will again start in Italy at Pinerolo, and then head to France where the Tour finishes in Nice this year, due to the Olympics in Paris.

Florence Celebrates 100-day Countdown To Tour De France's 'Grand Depart'

With just 100 days to go before cycling's Tour de France sets off, organisers described the 2024 Grand Depart in Florence as "a dream come true".

Ribollita to risi e bisi: a regional guide to Italy’s cuisine – what to eat and where to stay

With its remarkable culinary heritage, every region of Italy has unique specialities to savour

When it comes to great food and wines, few places match the sheer pleasure of travelling in Italy. The country’s delicious regional cuisine is based firmly on a Mediterranean diet, making the most of fresh, seasonal vegetables, plentiful seafood, local cheeses and charcuterie, exquisite dolci and amazingly good olive oil – accompanied by wonderful Italian wines. You’ll never be far from a truly unforgettable meal in this delightful country.

Florence for foodies

What to eat In Florence and surrounding Tuscany, try ribollita – delicious bean soup with cavolo nero and other vegetables. Crostini neri are the quintessential Tuscan appetiser – a chicken liver, caper and anchovy spread, served with toast. Don’t miss ragù di cinghiale – a fantastically rich wild boar sauce, usually served with pappardelle. The local cheese to try is pecorino toscano, and there’s always room for cantucci – feathery light almond biscuits, perfect for dipping in coffee or a glass of sweet dessert wine, vin santo.

Where to stay Just a 15-minute tram ride from the city centre, Hilton Garden Inn Florence Novoli is a great base for exploring Florence’s art and culture. At Hilton Florence Metropole , guests can enjoy a dedicated relaxation zone, complete with whirlpool and Swedish waterfall. For travellers who prefer to wake up in the heart of things, this spring sees the opening of Anglo American Hotel Florence, Curio Collection by Hilton , an elegant building with a beautiful inner garden that’s within easy walking distance of the Duomo.

Luscious Lombardy

What to eat Lombardy is one of Italy’s main rice-growing regions – so it goes without saying that Milan’s signature dish is risotto, made with rich stock and infused with fragrant saffron. Ossobuco (braised veal shanks) is another familiar favourite. In need of something sweet? Panettone originates from Milan, so this is also the best place for some panettone indulgence. Lombardy is also home to some particularly good filled pasta. Brescia’s standout dish is casoncelli bresciani – ravioli-like pasta, filled with a mixture of breadcrumbs, ham and parmigiano reggiano, served tossed in melted butter and sage leaves. The historic city of Mantua, on the other hand, has tortelli di zucca , stuffed with a filling of pumpkin, crushed amaretti biscuits, grana padano and nutmeg. Farther north, buckwheat flour makes an appearance.

Villa Torretta - 30 aprile 2009

Where to stay Grand Hotel Villa Torretta Milan Sesto, Curio Collection by Hilton is an exceptionally beautiful hotel in a restored 17th-century mansion, complete with a lovely cloister, plenty of period details and an award-winning restaurant. Hilton Milan has an excellent location just two blocks from Milan Central station – you can join a sightseeing tour from here, there’s a fitness centre that is open 24 hours a day, and two restaurants offer specialities of the region. Hilton Lake Como boasts a rooftop infinity pool and sits just above the lake – it’s well placed for boat trips departing from either Como or Tavernola. DoubleTree by Hilton Brescia is located between Lakes Garda and Iseo. The hotel boasts a seasonal outdoor pool, and there’s traditional Italian cuisine at the all-day FortyFive restaurant. Breathtaking Lake Iseo is well worth the 40-minute drive – it’s a perfect spot for swimmers, with stunning views of the lake’s islands, known as the “three pearls”.

Roman recipes

What to eat One of the most exquisite tastes of Rome is carciofi alla giudia – deliciously crisp fried artichokes, which are the most famous recipe from the Eternal City’s long Jewish heritage. Several pasta dishes are closely associated with Rome – this is the place to enjoy spaghetti carbonara at its absolute standout best, made with salty pecorino romano, or mouthwatering bucatini all’Amatriciana . As for desserts, you’ll be endlessly tempted by tiramisu, while breakfast (or arguably, any time of day) is good for a maritozzo or two – sweet, brioche-style buns filled with whipped cream.

Where to stay Aleph Rome Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton is set in a beautiful historic building, with a rooftop pool and bar, and within a 10-minute walk of the Trevi fountain. At DoubleTree by Hilton Rome Monti , you can enjoy views of the Eternal City from the eighth-floor Mùn Rooftop Cocktail Bar. This hotel is very central, and well placed for visiting the Colosseum and other attractions.

For the height of luxury, look to Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel , which offers spectacular views from its location in Trionfale. It’s home to Rome’s only three-star Michelin restaurant, La Pergola, which reopens on 30 April 2024, after a refurbishment.

Turin’s truffles

What to eat Piedmont is most definitely foodie territory. The area around Alba, near Turin, is famed for its heavenly white truffles – at their exquisite best shaved paper-thin across buttery tagliolini or other pasta. As for cheeses, try intense, semi-hard castelmagno, or the wonderfully soft robiola di Roccaverano. Piedmont’s wines are exceptional – think an aged barolo, or a Brunello di Montalcino. Turin’s other favourite drink is bicerin – coffee, chocolate and whipped cream in a glass. Oh the hardship.

Interior Seating at DoubleTree by Hilton Turin Lingotto

Where to stay DoubleTree by Hilton Turin Lingotto is in a former 1920s Fiat factory, transformed into an impeccably stylish modern hotel by world-famous architect Renzo Piano. Wind down with a lovely glass of velvety red Piedmont wine at the hotel’s Eligo bar.

Bologna, bolognese and balsamic

What to eat Perhaps no region in Italy conjures up such gastronomic riches as Emilia-Romagna – home not only to the famed ragù alla bolognese , but also parmigiano reggiano cheese, prosciutto di Parma, mortadella from Bologna and balsamic vinegar from Modena, among many other products with protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication status.

Where to stay Hilton Garden Inn Bologna North is on the outskirts of the city, near Fico Eataly World theme park, where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the making and tasting of Italy’s finest food and drink. There’s a peaceful garden at the hotel, or relax with a drink at the lounge bar.

Padua’s pazientina

What to eat When it comes to desserts, nothing is so emblematic of Padua as its elaborately made torta pazientina . This several hundred-year-old recipe combines layers of almond pastry and soft sponge cake, interspersed with zabaglione cream and a scattering of chocolate shavings. Along with all the wine produced here, plenty of rice is grown in the Veneto, with a signature dish being risi e bisi – rice with peas.

Where to stay Right in the centre of the city, Hilton Garden Inn Padova City Centre has shops, medieval sights and plenty of restaurants within walking distance. And with a fitness centre on-site, you can burn off that torta in a jiffy.

Seafood and spaghetti in Sorrento

What to eat The cuisine of Naples and nearby Sorrento makes use of wonderfully fresh local ingredients, including abundant seafood. Choose from the likes of Neapolitan octopus stew, or spaghetti alle vongole – and perhaps nothing tastes quite so summery as insalata caprese , with flavour-packed local tomatoes and creamy buffalo mozzarella. Naples is home to the best pizza you’ll ever taste, with an incredibly thin base, and deliciously puffy crust. Start with the simplest, pizza marinara, and work your way on from there. For the ultimate comfort food, look to gnocchi alla Sorrentina – potato gnocchi baked in tomato sauce, with mozzarella and fresh basil.

Where to stay Surrounded by citrus gardens and boasting fabulous views across the Bay of Naples, Hilton Sorrento Palace is well placed to explore the amazing archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as Naples itself, and the gorgeous Amalfi coast. Or simply enjoy the extensive outdoor pool area and on-site restaurants.
