Visit Girondins Monument
The Girondins Monument is a tribute to one of the more unfortunate groups during the Revolution, whose members were executed despite playing a part in its inception. Located on a long, spacious esplanade, the iconic landmark offers opportunities for photos of the impressive fountain and sculptures beneath the stone tower. Walk along the river banks to reach the monument before exploring other nearby attractions.
The very politically active group, the Girondins, played a crucial part in the early progress of the French Revolution they played a central part in founding the legislative assembly. However, as power was ceded to the violent Jacobins, the constitutional changes of the Revolution led to the Reign of Terror, during which the more moderate Girondins faced execution along with thousands of others.
Look upward at the pillar, which is about 140 feet (43 meters) tall. At its top is a statue of an angel of liberty holding a broken chain. The base of the column features a statue of women representing Bordeaux, the Garonne River and the Dordogne region.
Admire the detail of the bronze fountains flanking the monument. One of the fountains is known as the Triumph of the Republic and depicts a woman holding an olive branch, a symbol of peace. Try to guess the meaning of each figure in the fountains one celebrates family and another brotherhood.
Participate in one of the fairs or events on the surrounding Places des Quinconces. The large square frequently hosts artists, circuses and sporting competitions throughout the year.
The monument is located near other points of interest in central Bordeaux. After examining the sculptures, relax in the public gardens or explore modern art at CAPC musée d'art contemporain (contemporary art museum) north of the monument. Head south from the monument to view the National Opera of Bordeaux and Notre Dame Church.
The Girondins Monument is located in central Bordeaux and is well served by public transportation. To get here, take a bus to Enghien or ride the tram to Quinconces. The monument is less than a 5-minute walk from the Bordeaux tourism office.

Matmut Atlantique
Club: Girondins de Bordeaux | Opening: 2015 | Capacity: 42,115 seats
History and description
Stade Matmut Atlantique, previously also known as Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, is the recently opened new stadium of Girondins de Bordeaux. It replaced Bordeaux’s old stadium Stade Chaban-Delmas .
Apart from serving as Bordeaux’ new home, the stadium also got built with the purpose to serve as one of the playing venues of the Euro 2016 tournament.
Construction of the stadium took longer than planned due to lawsuits by local citizens that objected against the high costs of the stadium, partly financed with public money. The first stone was laid in April 2013, and while scheduled to be completed by late 2014, it took until May 2015 for it to be opened.
In 2015, a naming rights deal was announced with insurance firm Matmut, resulting in the name Matmut Atlantique.
Stade Matmut Atlantique officially opened on 23 May 2015 with a league match between Bordeaux and Montpellier (2-1), and hosted its first international match on 7 September of the same year when France beat Serbia 2-1 in a friendly.
The stadium, designed by Herzog & de Meuron , stands out by its exterior with a series of stairs leading up to an open corridor and a roof supported by a large number of thin poles. The stadium has a total of 3,000 business seats and another 1,000 seats in VIP lodges.
During Euro 2016, Matmut Atlantique hosted four first round group matches and the quarter final between Germany and Italy (1-1).
How to get to Matmut Atlantique
Matmut Atlantique is located in the north of Bordeaux on the edge of the city, roughly 6 km from the city centre.
The stadium is located just north of Bordeaux’ ring road. Take exit 4 / 4a / 4b from the A630 towards Parc des Expositions / Bx Lac. There is plenty of parking space near the stadium.
Stade Matmut Atlantique can furthermore be reached with Tram C. You can catch the tram for the main rail station, St Jean, or any other stops alongside the Garonne river up until Place de la Bourse. Get off at stop Parc des Expositions, which is the last stop on the line. Trams run frequent and the journey takes about half an hour.
Alternatively, one can take tram B to its last stop Berges de la Garonne and walk half an hour from there to the stadium.
Address: Cours Jules Ladoumegue, 33300 Bordeaux
Eat, drink, and sleep near Matmut Atlantique
Matmut Atlantique is located on the edge of the city in an area that is a mix of offices, sports facilities, and a nearby conference centre. The pleasant Floral park is located right next to the stadium.
There are a few roadside fast-food restaurants nearby, but overall there’s not much to do around the stadium, especially when the weather isn’t nice. Eating and drinking is therefore best done in Bordeaux’ city centre.
There are a fair few hotels near Matmut Atlantique due to its close proximity to the conference centre. The ibis budget Le Lac and Campanile Bordeaux Nord are good options for those on a budget, while the Novotel Bordeaux Lac , Mercure Bordeaux Lac , and Pullman Bordeaux Lac offer more comfort for those that have a little more to spend.
Click here for an overview of all hotels near Matmut Atlantique. However, if you’ve got some more time to spend, you would likely opt to stay in Bordeaux’ city centre where you can find a wide range of hotels .
Girondins Bordeaux Tickets
Tickets for Bordeaux matches can be bought online through the official website , the Auchan website, or Ticketmaster . They are generally sold as print@home e-tickets.
Tickets can furthermore be purchased in person at the ticket office at Matmut Atlantique, at the L’Esprit Girondins club store at Bordeaux’ Château du Haillan training ground in the north-west of the city (on weekdays only), or any Ticketmaster or Francebillet sales outlet.
If tickets remain available, these can also be bought at the tickets windows of the stadium before the start of the match. Bordeaux do not tend to sell out regular league matches.
Ticket prices depend on the opponent, but for a typical match range in price from €12.00 for an upper-tier seat behind the goal to €52.00 for the best seats at the main stand.
You can find a seating plan here .

Monument to the Girondins Bordeaux
With over two thousand years of history, monuments and relevant sites to see in Bordeaux are the order of the day. Everywhere you go, you can find a real architectural joy to enjoy, especially squares and monuments.
The Monument to the Girondins is a place worth visiting a thousand times. Even if you already know it, it is always fascinating. In addition, it is in the heart of the city, but, even so, here you breathe calm.
Monument to the Girondins and Quinconces Square
When we say that in Bordeaux there are many places full of history and tradition to enjoy, we are not exaggerating. Hundreds of squares, parks and buildings, many of them protected by UNESCO, make this city a true paradise for history lovers.
The Place des Quinconces is considered one of the largest squares in the world located in the middle of a city. If you have been wanting to know a little more about this place, we will tell you about its history.
For a clearer perception, we will talk on the one hand about the monument to the Girondins, and on the other hand about the square itself.
History of the Monument to the Girondins
First of all, let’s make it clear who were the Girondins. They were the deputies who came from the department of the Gironde. They were part of one of the most important fractions in the French Revolution. However, they were accused of conspiracy and 21 leaders of this group were guillotined in 1793.
As the centenary approached, the government of Bordeaux decided to erect a monument in honor of these leaders. The work began in 1894, although it was not inaugurated until 1902.
This monument is composed of a pillar 43 meters high, which is crowned by a statue of liberty, but breaking the chains. It is surrounded by a beautiful and impressive fountain that is decorated with different statues that have different representations. Together, they make up the Triumph of the Republic and the Triumph of Concord.
History of the Place des Quinconces
The Place des Quinconces, with more than 12 hectares of space, is considered the largest square in Europe located within a city.
It was built in the 19th century, on the site of the ancient fortress of the Royal Castle of Trompette. This, in turn, was erected after the culmination of the Hundred Years’ War in the fifteenth century. However, after a series of attacks, it was finally destroyed in the 19th century.
The name of this square is due to the tree-lined alleys in the surrounding area. In the past, in these could be seen several groups of five trees distributed along the road, i.e. in quincunx.
Here there are two 21 meter high columns that were erected in 1829. One symbolizes navigation and the other trade, the main sources of income of the city. In 1858 two white marble statues were added, representing Montaigne and Montesquieu.
During six months of the year, the square hosts a large part of its space for cultural and recreational activities for the city.

Various experiences to enjoy this famous square of the Quinconces !
Why is it built this way? What does its name mean and what is the history behind this square, known as the biggest in France ? Discover its history.
THE HISTORY OF THE MONUMENT
A true heritage of the culture of Bordeaux, it was built in the 19th century, on the former site of the royal fortress of Château Trompette which was built at the end of the 100 years war, in the middle of the 15th century. This castle was then enlarged by Vauban, under the order of King Louis XIV. Opinions were quite divergent on this subject, because hated by the Bordelais against whom its cannons were often directed, the Château Trompette was finally destroyed in the early 19th century.
The name of the Place des Quinconces, comes from the arrangement of the trees , where several groups of 5 trees are taken up along the length of the alleys. One also finds there the statues of Montaigne and Montesquieu opposing each other.
These bronze statues come from far away. In 1941, a decree imposed the melting down of metal statues in order to supply the German armament factories. Then on the night of August 14-15, 1942, the bronzes left Bordeaux to be melted down. Fortunately hidden by a network of resistance fighters, the statues returned to Bordeaux, intact, after the war. They were then stored in Lormont, on the right bank, for many years. Indeed, the set that can be admired today was only reconstituted in 1982. Moreover, the “monument to the Girondists and the Republic” was able to regain its original function as a decorative fountain.
IN FRONT OF THE ROSTRAL COLUMNS
When you walk along the main square, you can see the two 21-meter high rostral columns at the end, facing the Garonne. These columns were once used to welcome sailors and celebrate maritime victories. They were built in 1828 by the architect Alexandre Poitevin in a “neo-classical” style. Both were built in a symmetrical way, but each one keeps different symbols that characterize them.
In 1829, the Place des Quinconces was decorated on the Garonne side with two rostral columns symbolizing Commerce and Navigation . Indeed, Commerce and Navigation are represented in an allegorical way by two cast iron statues which are at the top of the columns. They are Mercury (Hermes) and Artemis (Diana). However, these statues are not the originals. The first versions were, in fact, made in terracotta by a sculptor whose name was Maggesi.
SYMBOLIC SCULPTURES
The project for the fountain at the foot of the Girondins’ column dates back to 1893, when Bordeaux wished to pay homage to the Girondin deputies, heroes and martyrs of the Revolution. Consequently, the sculptor Achille Dumilâtre and the architect Victor Rich designed a monumental ensemble consisting of a 50-meter high white marble column and a very complete set of marble and bronze statues. At the top of the column stands a statue representing t he Genius of Liberty breaking his chains and brandishing the palm of Victory .
At the feet of the base of the monument to the Girondins, there are several types of statues with different symbols, including the 8 marine horses .
It is also possible to observe, on the side of the Grand Theatre, the “Triumph of the Republic” is represented by a blacksmith symbolizing work, a woman holding a sword designating security and the latter is sitting on a lion expressing strength. If we look below these sculptures, we can find the presence of a group of 3 children, located on the right and left of the monument. Each of these groups represents “compulsory education and military service”.
Then towards the Public Garden, there is the “Triumph of the Concord” , built by the architect Felix Charpentier, which highlights this monument. The sculptures on this side symbolize fraternity, with the characters of a bourgeois and a worker.
WHY IS THE COLUMN NAMED GIRONDINS ?
The notion of “Girondins” is due to the French Revolution and to history. During the Revolution, two camps opposed each other: the Girondins, originating from the provincial bourgeoisie, and the Jacobins of Paris, otherwise known as the Montagnards. As a result, the Girondins were eventually executed, which is when the people of Bordeaux showed a great interest in the name “Girondins”.
The monument to the Girondins and the esplanade of the Quinconces still hide many secrets of history. If you want to discover them, plan your next visit on our site , to book your tickets and take advantage of our best tours to explore the monuments of Bordeaux . You will be able to visit the center with a guided and commented bus tour, to enjoy an immersive experience in the center of Bordeaux.

Discover the historic monument of Conciergerie in Paris
Last Updated: 13 July 2022
With its distinctive towers, the Conciergerie on the Île de la Cité used to belong to the Kings of France . In fact, it even preceded the Louvre as their royal residence. During the French Revolution, it became notorious for being a prison. And even more, a dreadful antechamber to the guillotine. However, once inside, the monument visitors will discover one of the finest examples in Europe of Gothic secular architecture.
The Conciergerie: a bit of history
The Conciergerie is situated on the Île de la Cité, an island on the Seine which is closely linked with the history of Paris .
Today, the Conciergerie occupies the North part of the old royal residence of Palais de la Cité which is believed to have been founded in the 6th century by Clovis, the first French king.
During the Middle Ages
In the 10th century, Hugh Capet , the first Capetian king, established his council and government in the Palais de la Cité. Thus it became the seat of royal power. In the King’s absence, le Concierge was appointed a keeper to hold command of the royal residence, hence the term “ Conciergerie “. This title was regarded as a very high-ranking one as le Concierge was considered the King’s housekeeper.
The Conciergerie remained the seat of the Kings of France from Hugh Capet to the 14th century.
The palace was extended and fortified under Louis IX (Saint-Louis) and Philip IV (Philip the Fair). The latter added the façade towers and a large Gothic hall.
Following the incursions of the bourgeois led by Etienne Marcel in 1358, King Charles V left the Conciergerie to the Hôtel Saint-Pol in the Marais (no longer existing today). Later, the Kings of France would establish their royal residence in the Louvre while enjoying residing in the chateaux of the Loire .
As for the Conciergerie, it continued to be used as the seat of the Parliament of Paris (the highest judicial court in the kingdom). In addition, part of the building was converted as a prison in 1391, housing a mixture of common outlaws and political detainees, such as Ravaillac (King Henry IV’s assassin).
During the French Revolution
During the French Revolution , the people of Paris nicknamed the Conciergerie ‘ the antechamber to the guillotine ‘. It became the central penitentiary of a network of prisons throughout Paris. In March 1793, the Revolutionary Tribunal sat in the Grand Chamber and in July 1793, Robespierre inaugurated the ‘ Reign of Terror ’ which ordered the arrest of anyone presumed to be an enemy of the Revolution or who confessed to being so.
The Conciergerie housed as many as 1,200 prisoners at once. Between September 1793 and July 1794, the tribunal’s public prosecutor Quentin Fouquier-Tinville judged more than 2,700 people. For most of them, it was the final stop before being picked up by cart to one of the guillotines set throughout Paris.
Famous prisoners included Queen Marie-Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, Madame Elisabeth, Madame du Barry, Georges Danton and Robespierre.
From the 19th century up to today
In the 19th century, the Conciergerie and the whole Palace of Justice underwent a major restoration.
The Conciergerie was listed as a historic monument by the French State in 1914.

The Façade of the Conciergerie by the Seine
The medieval façade of the Conciergerie is best seen from the Mégisserie Quay on the Right Bank. The building includes four towers that originally had their feet in the River Seine when the banks had not yet been built.
The Bonbec Tower (Tour Bonbec)
Bonbec Tower is the oldest tower of the Conciergerie. Its foundation dates back to the 11th century. The crenellated Bonbec Tower means ‘good beak’ for it housed the torture chamber where the prisoners were encouraged ‘to sing’ (to confess). The Bonbec Tower was restored in 1935 after a devastating fire.
The Silver Tower (Tour d’Argent) and Caesar Tower (Tour de César)
It is believed that the Silver Tower was used as a storeroom where the royal treasure was kept.
Its twin round tower, the Caesar Tower, was named in honour of the Roman Emperors.
The Clock Tower (Tour de l’Horloge)
Built between 1350 and 1353, the tower is the tallest (47m tall). Since 1371 it has housed the remarkable clock whose purpose was to help Parisians regular their activities during the day and night.
Inside the Conciergerie
The lower parts of the Conciergerie are the only ones still standing today from the Middle Ages. They were used by the Royal Guard and the staff members (clerks, officers and servants) who worked for the king and his family (about 2,000 people in all). Interestingly, the floor level of the medieval halls is still the same as it was in the 14th century. This was despite the construction of embankments in the 19th century.
Hall of the Men-at-Arms (Salle des Gens d’Armes)
In the Middle Ages, the Great Hall (Grande Salle) was one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It was destroyed by fire on the night of 5 March 1618. If the room is no longer standing, its lower floor remains.
This is the stunning Hall of the Men-at-Arms . Built between 1302 and 1313 by Enguerrand de Marigny, The four-aisled Gothic hall is 64m long, 27.5 wide and 8.5m high, a similar size to those of the Mont-Saint-Michel and the Popes’ Palace in Avignon.
The room was used as a dining room for the 2,000 staff members, for royal banquets and for judicial proceedings.
The dark hall was once heated by four large fireplaces and lit by many windows which have since been blocked up.
Guard Room (Salle des Gardes)
The Gothic vaulted room was built around the same time as the Hall of Men-at-Arms. The hall is supported by stout pillars with interesting capitals, such as the central pillar which is thought to portray Heloise and Abelard . The Guard Room was the antechamber to the Great Hall on the upper floor (which has disappeared since) where the King was holding meetings with his council and dispensed justice.
From 1793 to 1794, the Revolutionary Tribunal presided by public prosecutor Quentin Fouquier-Tinville took place there.
The Kitchen
The kitchen was built during the reign of John II the Good (1319-1364). Only the lower level of the original outbuilding remains today. Provisions were delivered there directly by the Seine . Four big fireplaces were built in each corner of the kitchen to cook enough food to feed between 2,000 and 3,000 people.
The passageway of Rue de Paris
Once part of the Hall of the Men-at-Arms, the small hall was later separated from it and raised in the 15th century.
Serving as a corridor between the Guard Room and the Revolutionary Halls, it owes its name to the executioner during the French Revolution, “ Monsieur de Paris “. There were imprisoned the poorest prisoners who could not afford to pay for better accommodation in a cell. As they were sleeping on straw ( la paille ), they were named ‘Pailleux’ or ‘Payeux’. It now houses a small gift shop.
The Revolutionary Halls
Once passed through the Rue de Paris to the left, the visitor discovers another part of the Conciergerie: the Revolutionary Halls . Used during the Revolution, the premises were modernised following the 1776 fire by King Louis XVI.
The Prisoner’s Gallery
This is the main axis of the prison where prisoners could wander freely.
The Girondins’ Chapel
Where stands the Girondin’s Chapel already existed a little royal chapel remodelled in 1776.
Marie-Antoinette’s Chapel
Next to the Girondins’ Chapel stands the chapel dedicated to Marie-Antoinette. This expiatory chapel from 1815 occupies the cell where Marie-Antoinette spent the final two months of her life, from 2 August to 16 October 1793.
On that date, 37-year-old Marie-Antoinette was taken from the Conciergerie to the execution site. She was driven through Rue Saint-Honoré to Place de la Révolution (today Place de la Concorde ) in an open cart. She was guillotined at 12:15 pm, nine months after her husband, King Louis XVI.
To pay your respects to Marie-Antoinette, reach her final resting place: the Basilica of St-Denis (North of Paris).
Marie-Antoinette’s Cell (removed from the monument)
Until recently visitors would discover a reconstitution of the cell where Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned. There were a cot, a chair, a table, and a screen that separated the queen from watchmen day and night.
The reconstituted cell dating from 1989 is no more today to the disarray of many visitors who were familiar with it.
The Women’s Courtyard
The courtyard is where women prisoners were allowed out of their cells during the day to wash their clothes and eat at stone tables.
Corner of the Twelve
Next to the women’s courtyard is a corridor known as “ Côté des Douzes ” where prisoners of both sexes could talk through the bars. From there, inmates in groups of twelve waited for the cart that would lead them to the guillotine.

Brilliant Bordeaux (2024) (Bordeaux to Bordeaux, 2024)
The exceptional region of Bordeaux (port-to-port cruise)
Highly recommend Avalon Waterways to deliver a fabulous cruise experience. We travelled on two boats due to water levels on the Rhine. The transfer and replacement bus trip between boats was arranged seamlessly. Avalon very generously refunded a days’ cruising $ amount as well as provided us with “lunch money” - they were proactive, organised and professional. My dietary needs were met beyond any level I had previously experienced. My meals were delicious and resembled what the general population received. Thank you Tibor and your team for being absolutely fabulous.
