The Benefits of a Bus Tour
Bus tours offer a range of benefits that make them an attractive and convenient option for solo women travelers.
Stress-Free Travel Logistics
One of the most significant advantages of a bus tour is that all the travel logistics are taken care of by the tour company. From transportation to accommodations, sightseeing, and meals, you can sit back and relax without worrying about the details.
Expert Tour Guides
Bus tours are led by knowledgeable and experienced tour guides who provide valuable insights about the destinations you visit. They offer historical context, local anecdotes, and hidden gems that you might not discover on your own.
Time-Efficient Sightseeing
Bus tours are designed to cover multiple attractions in a relatively short period. This allows you to maximize your time and see a wide range of sights without the hassle of planning routes, navigating, and dealing with public transportation.
Safety and Security
Traveling in a group on a bus provides an added layer of safety, especially when exploring unfamiliar territories or foreign countries. Tour operators prioritize the safety of their passengers, giving you peace of mind throughout your trip.
Camaraderie and Social Interaction
Bus tours offer an excellent opportunity to meet and connect with fellow travelers from various backgrounds. Shared experiences create a sense of camaraderie, and you may form lasting friendships with like-minded individuals.
Flexibility and Variety
Bus tours come in various themes and durations, catering to different interests and preferences. Whether you’re interested in historical sites, natural wonders, culinary delights, or a mix of everything, there’s likely a tour that suits your tastes.
Cost-Effectiveness
Bus tours often bundle various expenses, making them a cost-effective option compared to planning each element of a trip individually. Additionally, group rates and pre-booked admissions may lead to discounts at attractions.
How to Choose a Bus Tour
Choosing the right bus tour can significantly impact the quality of your travel experience. To ensure you select a tour that aligns with your interests, preferences, and budget, consider the following factors when making your decision.
Destination and Itinerary
Start by deciding where you want to travel. Look for bus tours that cover destinations you’ve been dreaming of visiting. Review the itinerary to ensure it includes the key attractions and experiences you desire. Consider whether you prefer a fast-paced tour covering multiple places or a more leisurely trip with more time at each location.
Tour Theme and Focus
Bus tours offer various themes, such as historical, cultural, adventure, culinary, wildlife, and more. Choose a tour that matches your interests and passions, so you can make the most of your journey and engage in activities that excite you.
Group Size and Dynamics
Different bus tours accommodate varying group sizes. If you enjoy a more intimate experience, opt for smaller group tours. Larger groups can offer a diverse mix of people and more social interactions. Read reviews and testimonials to gauge the tour’s atmosphere and whether it aligns with your travel style.
Tour Operator Reputation
Research the tour operator’s reputation and track record. Look for reviews from past travelers to get insights into their experiences and level of satisfaction. Reputable operators prioritize safety, knowledgeable guides, and seamless logistics.
Inclusions and Exclusions
Review what is included in the tour package, such as accommodations, meals, transportation, entrance fees, and activities. Compare the value of inclusions with the overall cost of the tour. Also, check for any optional activities that may incur additional charges.
Comfort and Amenities
Assess the quality of the bus and the amenities provided during the tour. Comfortable seating, air conditioning, and onboard facilities can enhance the overall experience, especially if you’re going on a long trip.
Tour Guides and Expertise
Knowledgeable and personable tour guides can significantly enhance your travel experience. Look for tours that provide experienced guides who can offer valuable insights and ensure a smooth trip.
Budget Considerations
Set a budget for your bus tour and compare prices among different operators. Remember to account for any additional expenses that might arise during the trip. While cost is essential, prioritize the overall value and experience offered by the tour.
Customer Support
Check if the tour operator provides reliable customer support before, during, and after the tour. Having prompt assistance in case of any issues or questions can make a significant difference in your travel experience.
Flexibility and Free Time
Evaluate the level of flexibility provided during the tour. Some tours may have a structured itinerary, while others offer more free time for individual exploration. Choose the one that aligns with your desired balance between organized activities and personal exploration.
Tip: Remember to book in advance, as popular tours often fill up quickly.

Great suggestion!
I just got back from my first bus tour of Scotland and Ireland. All the benefits and highlights listed in this article are true. The one caveat is that you are around a lot of people, not only on the bus but at various tourist points along the way which increases the chances of catching air borne infections. I came down with Covid 3 days into the trip and although mild and I was able to participate in most activities, it set me back a few days and I had to miss out on a few of the outings that I most wanted to see! I wore a mask the rest of the trip. Very few people on the bus wore masks and quite a few had mild coughs. By the end of the trip, I’d say about 1/3 of the bus was sick. A few more wore masks at that point but many didn’t. I wonder if the people who had coughs early on had worn masks if that would have kept others from getting sick. I happened to have brought home Covid tests with me so was able to test. By the end of the trip, 3 of us from my group of 4 had gotten mild Covid. Traveling is stressful as I discovered at age 70 and having not traveled internationally in many years. The tour was too fast paced for me so definitely consider that when planning.
Also, these tours are all starting from America/Canada! What about us intrepid travellers from the UK?
Or Australia? And 5 days seems the length of these tours—there must be many bus holidays available that are longer than 5 days!
Or other parts of the US
More to come, Vicki! Can’t include all tours in one article :)
Thank you, Jensy, for giving us ideas for future articles. Stay tuned!

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy
Who are Intrepid travelers?
Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.
Are there age restrictions on your trips?
For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.
How many people will be on my trip?
Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.
I’m traveling alone – is that OK?
This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.
Learn more about solo travel
I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.
Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.
Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid
Do I need to buy travel insurance?
Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.
Will I have my own room?
It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.
For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.
How does group time work?
Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.
What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?
The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

"I recently returned from the Costa Rican wildlife safari. I was a bit concerned with Covid however every place was extremely clean and had places for you to wash your hands before you even walked in. This was a trip I was actually supposed to go on in 2020 however it was postponed, waiting so long the expectations were high. I was definitely not disappointed! Patricia our guide was absolutely wonderful, extremely knowledgeable and cater to our every need. I would highly recommend this vacation. Also everyone that I met in the community was extremely gracious and kind. The majority of these people work on tourism and unfortunately in the last year have not had any. Booking this trip would not only be an amazing adventure for you but it would also be amazing for the people in the community"

Newfoundland Adventure: Eastbound
My Husband and I truly enjoyed the small group of 9 . Any more than this wouldn't have felt like a family. Our group gelled well. The van would not be big enough if more persons were in the group. Highly recommend NOT to have a larger group for other tours. Everyone was interested in everything we did and saw. Everyone was at the same level of ability and agility. Our Tour guide Simon was very flexible with options if weather wasn't in our favour. Would recommend Simon for other tours. He was very knowledgable on our Newfoundland tour.
Newfoundland Adventure: Westbound
Mia Dion was the best Tour Guide we could have ever asked for. So very efficient in every way. Helpful, knowledgeable, polite, friendly and organized always.

Scenic Wonders of Newfoundland and Labrador (14 Days)
Overall it was very good the attractions we went to see were very good. Any time we had a Park guide they were top notch very knowledgeable and entertaining. Suggestions and my opinion: - St Pierre was very interesting and the meal was by far our best. The drive down is very scenic but long. Then with the waiting to board, ferry ride, customs with a repeat of the same the next day meant a lot of time waiting, not sure it was worth it. - Either hire a local guide for our city tour in St Johns to do the commentary or have all Trafalgar guides do the hop-on-off bus for one tour to get all the information and local tidbits of the history. - Highly suggest in the brochure to come in a day earlier to see and enjoy the sights of St Johns -Needed more time at the Vikings site, start earlier, or have less time allotted for lunch. This attraction could easily be a full afternoon. -Seemed very rushed in Trinity after the local historian tour would be nice to have a complete hour to ourselves to explore and walk around. -Would far rather of had the Viking Feast dinner rather than the Breakfast - It might be worth considering the ferry ride to Labrador moving back a day. We were very lucky on our return back to NFLD the weather turned nasty and the rest of the day all other ferries were canceled. Had we not made this trip and then been stuck in Labrador for the day we would of all missed our flight home. -Possibly add Corner Brook seemed like a beautiful city
- €100 deposit on some dates Some departure dates offer you the chance to book this tour with a lower deposit.

Gros Morne Sampler
It's a fantastische adventure. Rebecca and Ian are experienced guides. I totales recommend it!
Newfoundland & Labrador with Iceberg Festival
This was one of the best tours I have had with Globus, and I have done many! James, the tour director, and Clarence, the driver were fantastic. They were very helpful, kind, funny, and informative. Globus says up front that some of the accommodations may not be up to their usual standards because of the remoteness of the locations, but all were very clean with friendly staff. A lot of ground was covered and a lot was included with this tour: a ferry ride plus three different boat excursions. No complaints!

Gros Morne Adventure
Fantastic hikes, scenery, food, guides/drivers and accommodations. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to explore and learn more about Gros Morne.

Jamie was organised & on top of everything, prepared & willing to help. Places to stay were good, some more than others but overall good.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups
These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.
The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.
It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.
Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.
Walking the World
Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.
Road Scholar
Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.
Adventures Abroad
While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.
An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling
Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.
Firebird Tours
With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.
Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.
Overseas Adventure Travel
With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.
EF Go Ahead Tours
Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Country Walkers
Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Moscow Bus Network
Moscow's crazy traffic and its excellent metro network mean that the city's buses and trolleybuses aren't the number one option for tourists .
Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes , many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods. Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option , especially as the metro is so efficient.
Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes. The bus can be a good, economical option at night , when 13 routes replace the metro after it shuts down (all starting from Kitay-Gorod metro and taking the main roads out to the edge off the city).
More modern buses have screens indicating the stops along the route, but in older ones you may well struggle knowing where to get off if relying on the Russian-language loudspeaker announcements .
If you do decide to catch the bus, tickets can be purchased from kiosks and metro stops, and the majority of lines operate between 6 am and 1 am.

- DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
- niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
- Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018
- Monismith2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles it was very enjoyable it was very interesting seeing things we saw walking around from the bus. so much more to see. we had a lot better view of the attractions from the height of the bus.also the bus was reasonable slow which gave us time enough for photos. it stopped at sparrow hill for 10 minutes for picture taking Read more Written September 20, 2018
- fati666222 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to see Moscow We did both routes but if you have little time then only do the red route. Its very informative and it takes you to the important sights. The staff on the bus are very friendly and helpful. Read more Written August 20, 2018

- Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. - Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
- Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
- WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

After more than 60 years, a championship team gets its White House moment

▶ Watch Video: First HBCU team to win national championship finally get their White House moment
College basketball’s national champions will be crowned on Sunday and Monday, with a likely celebratory trip to the White House to follow, but after more than 60 years, one team finally has its moment on Pennsylvania Avenue.
“This is the greatest day of my life,” said George Finley, a former basketball player for the Tennessee A&I Tigers during their championship run.
Finley, along with five of his former teammates who are now well into their 80s, met with Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday at the White House, an experience the former college athletes have waited decades for.
The Tennessee A&I Tigers men’s basketball team was the first HBCU team to win a national championship in 1957, and made history again by becoming the first college team to win three back-to-back national titles from 1957-1959.
“I thought this would never take place,” said Finley, who was part of the 1959 championship team and eventually drafted by the NBA’s Detroit Pistons but chose to play for the American Basketball League. “[Winning] the championship was big, but it wasn’t as big as being here with [Vice President] Harris today.”
But during the era of segregation and within the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, Black college athletes were often denied the recognition and opportunities to play on an elite level. Tennessee A & I, now known as Tennessee State University, is a public HBCU.
Harris hosted six members of the team in a meeting along with their family, friends, and those close to the group of former athletes. Henry Carlton, Robert Clark, Ron Hamilton, Ernie Jones, George Finley, and Dick Barnett joined Finley in the Roosevelt Room at the White House.
“I look at each of you and the path and the journey that you’ve been on and your willingness to tell the story in such an active way is so important,” Harris said. “There are forces right now that would try to overlook or deny our history. But I think the only way that we will continue to strengthen ourselves and see progress as a country is when we remember where we’ve been to help us guide where we want to be.”
The road to the White House visit on Friday was paved with significant challenges both on and off the court. The team was subject to a bomb threat on the plane during their return trip home from Kansas City following their victory at the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) championship game in 1957. Members of the team would go on to participate in a sit-in at a lunch counter in Nashville to protest segregation policies.
It would be decades before the Tigers were recognized for their historic wins and be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
Former Tiger and NBA star Dick Bennett was pivotal in a public awareness campaign for the team over several years leading up to the 2019 event . The campaign is highlighted in a recent documentary “ The Dream Whisperer ,” which aired on PBS and is narrated by Bennett and features interviews with former players and those closely connected to the team.
“It just takes time and effort and continuation, and that’s what I strive to do,” Barnett said. “It’s been very gratifying,” he told CBS News about being recognized with a White House visit.
The players in attendance presented Harris, an HBCU graduate herself, with a personalized jersey before the end of their visit.
