Travel to Japan from Malaysia 2023: A Comprehensive Guide

22 Mei 2023

Are you planning to travel to Japan from Malaysia? If so, you're in for an exciting journey! Japan, a country known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, has recently eased its travel restrictions, making it a perfect destination for Malaysian travelers.

Experience the deep and rich culture of Japan~

🤔 Understanding Japan's Travel Restrictions

As of May 2023, Japan has lifted its travel restrictions, allowing Malaysians to enter the country. This move is a significant step towards reviving international tourism, which was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it's essential to stay updated with the latest travel advisories from the Japanese government and your local travel agency.

From April 29, 2023, travelers and returnees are no longer required to submit either a certificate of negative result of COVID-19 test conducted within 72 hours prior to departure, or a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate of three doses or equivalent. The currently implemented measures, including provisional random sampling tests for all travelers and returnees arriving from China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau) by direct flights, will be replaced with testing on arrival required only by those who show symptoms of COVID-19.

Airports and ports that suspended international flights and cruises have started to lift the suspension as their preparations are completed. It's important to check the status of the airport or port you plan to use for your travel.

Remember, the situation can change rapidly, and the information provided here is subject to change. Always check for updates and follow the latest guidance from the relevant ministries and official bodies.

✅ Visa Requirements for Malaysians

Malaysians are fortunate to enjoy visa-free entry to Japan for short-term stays. However, for those who do not have an ePassport and need to apply for a visa, or for those planning a long-term stay for sightseeing and recreation, there are specific requirements to be aware of.

For a long-term stay visa, the period of stay is 6 months. However, a maximum 1-year period will be granted if eligible individuals apply for the extension of the period of stay to the Regional Immigration Bureau, Ministry of Justice, before the 6-month period of permitted stay is to expire.

Eligibility for this type of visa includes individuals aged 18 years or older who have savings equivalent to more than 30 million Japanese yen owned by them and their spouse. An accompanying spouse of the individual is also eligible, but they must have the same place of residence and travel together in Japan. Dependent children, however, cannot accompany under this scheme.

The necessary documents for this visa application include:

Visa Application Form (with a photo)

Certificate of Eligibility

Schedule of Stay

Documents such as a bankbook to prove that the applicant’s savings is more than 30 million Japanese yen along with the records indicating the current balance as well as deposits and withdrawals for the past 6 months.

Documents to prove that the applicant holds private medical travel insurance which covers death, injury, illness during his/her stay

For the accompanying spouse, additional documents such as the Marriage Certificate and a copy of the spouse's visa under the same category are required.

Remember, the visa application process can be complex and time-consuming. It's always a good idea to start early and seek advice from a trusted travel agency or the Japanese embassy or consulate in Malaysia.

🤩 Best Time to Travel to Japan

Japan's weather varies throughout the year, offering unique experiences in every season. The best time to visit depends on your preferences.

Winter (December - February):

If you're a fan of winter sports, January and February offer peak winter conditions. The ski resorts in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps are at their best during these months. The Sapporo Snow Festival in February is a must-see event.

Spring (March - May):

Late March to April is ideal for cherry blossom viewing. The sakura (cherry blossoms) bloom all over the country, creating stunning landscapes. The Golden Week in late April to early May is a popular holiday season in Japan, with many festivals and events.

Summer (June - August):

June marks the start of the rainy season in most parts of Japan, except Hokkaido. The rainy season typically ends in July, and it becomes hot and humid. August is similar to July, with high travel activity due to summer school holidays. The summer is also the season for fireworks and festivals, including the famous Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.

Autumn (September - November):

The typhoon season peaks in September, and the weather can still be hot and humid. October is one of the most pleasant months for travel, with warm weather and the start of autumn colors. November is ideal for travel due to the dry and mild weather and spectacular autumn colors. The autumn foliage in places like Kyoto and Nara is a sight to behold.

Remember, the best time to visit Japan depends on what you want to see and do. Whether it's skiing in Hokkaido, viewing cherry blossoms in Kyoto, attending summer festivals, or admiring autumn foliage, each season offers unique experiences.

🚆 Navigating Public Transport in Japan

Japan's public transportation system is known for its efficiency, punctuality, and extensive coverage. Whether you're in a bustling city like Tokyo or a rural area in Hokkaido, you can rely on public transport to get around. Here's a guide to help Malaysians navigate Japan's public transport system.

Japan's train network is extensive, with frequent services in urban areas and major tourist destinations. The Japan Railways (JR) Group operates a large proportion of intercity trains and commuter trains. Other private railway companies operate in metropolitan areas, especially in Tokyo and Osaka. The Shinkansen (bullet trains) are a fast and convenient way to travel between major cities.

Subways are a convenient mode of transport in large cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. They are efficient and reliable, but they can get crowded during rush hours.

While trains and subways cover most urban areas, buses are useful for reaching destinations not served by trains. Long-distance highway buses are a cheaper alternative to trains for intercity travel.

Taxis are available but are more expensive than public transportation. They can be a convenient option if you're traveling in a group or have a lot of luggage.

Air Travel:

For long distances, flying can be a time-saving option. Japan has several airports, with Narita and Haneda being the major international airports in Tokyo. Low-cost carriers have made domestic air travel more affordable in recent years.

IC cards like Suica and Pasmo can be used on most trains, subways, and buses. They are rechargeable cards that you tap on card readers at ticket gates. They can also be used to make payments at vending machines and some shops.

Japan Rail Pass:

If you plan to travel extensively by train, consider getting a Japan Rail Pass. It offers unlimited travel on JR trains for a certain period and can be a cost-effective option.

Apps like Google Maps can help you navigate Japan's public transport system. Certain apps are able to provide information on routes, schedules, and fares.

Narita Airport to Tokyo:

There are several options to get from Narita Airport to central Tokyo. The JR Narita Express (NEX) offers a comfortable ride to Tokyo Station in about an hour. The Keisei Skyliner connects the airport with Ueno Station in around 40 minutes. There are also cheaper options like the JR Sobu Line and Keisei Main Line, as well as buses and taxis.

Remember, public transport in Japan is reliable and punctual, so it's important to be on time. Also, keep in mind that it's customary to be quiet when using public transport in Japan.

Meg is honestly the BEST group leader we could have wished for. She was like having a friend who had her exact SHIT together and gave us unmatched recommendations and cultural knowledge. Meg made my trip what it was and I will actually miss her as a group leader and a friend. Nothing more can be said to praise Meg in her job role and going above and beyond for all in our group. I enjoyed spending time with Meg and respect her opinion and knowledge greatly, We ALL loved having her as our fearless leader to explore Japan. She was very patient with a variety of needs and always adapted and jumped into action in unforeseen circumstances, taking any stress off us. To improve my trip would be to put Meg in a photocopier and give her out as a souvenir because honestly don’t know how I’m many to navigate life without her now?? Big up Meg real MVP of the trip ♥️ Such a positive first intro travel experience and I’m SO excited to book my next trip!

Contrasts of Japan Tour

Contrasts of Japan

A good selection of cities and attractions to visit. Generally well organised. Perhaps a few too many temples and shrines and the walk to the bridge near the palace in Tokyo was a complete waste of time. Rather unsettling to be reallocated to a different leader and group towards the end of the tour. Paco was pretty good but did not stick to his own plan to wait for the group to assemble before giving out instructions or crossing streets. His information was not always accurate - saying Sakura was not actually Cherry blossom but other stone fruit trees and primarily almond! - and advising the group not to go to breakfast at the Osaka hotel because it would be too time consuming, when it was nothing if the kind. Unfortunately most of the group took his word and had to buy breakfast elsewhere. The second leader, Ray/Moon, gave a very unbalanced account of Japan’s involvement in WW2, during our visit to Hiroshima, which was both insensitive and inaccurate. Leaders can make or break a tour since we spend so much time travelling with them. They need to allow more quiet time for private conversations, reading or sleeping.

His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Japan

Trip of a lifetime! The tour itself was well thought-out. Hotels were generally good, and some were outstanding. Our three teenage kids had a fantastic time. I would highly recommend spending a bit of time in Tokyo before and/or after the formal tour, because the tour is a bit light on time spent in Tokyo.
Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

Interactive_Eid_2024_outside image

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

Other countries follow independent sightings.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Girls and women in many countries decorate their hands with henna. The celebration for Eid begins the night before as women gather in neighbourhoods and large family gatherings for the application of henna.

In some countries, families visit graveyards to offer their respects to departed family members right after the morning prayers.

It is common for Muslim-majority countries to decorate their cities with lights and hold festivities to commemorate the end of the fasting month.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.

What are common Eid greetings?

The most popular greeting is “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) or “Eid sa’id” (Happy Eid). Eid greetings also vary depending on the country and language.

New Normal for the Tourism Industry in 2024: Rethinking and Relaunching

Since the beginning of 2023, Japan, Thailand, and other countries have relaxed their entry restrictions, leading to a surge in Hong Kong residents traveling abroad due to herd mentality. They flocked to Japan for shopping and indulged in hot springs.

However, after this initial wave, the enthusiasm for outbound travel cooled down slightly, and domestic tourism gained momentum.

Will Mainland Chinese tourists no longer flock to Hong Kong? Before the pandemic, mainland Chinese tourists significantly drove local consumption, and receiving mainland tour groups was a major source of income for many jewelry, gold, and high-end dried seafood stores.

Although the borders between the two regions have now reopened, businesses have reported that the influx of mainland Chinese tourists to Hong Kong is not as high as expected.

According to media reports, during the recent "Golden Week" holiday, the number of mainland Chinese tourists entering Hong Kong dropped by nearly 40% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Additionally, the fluctuation in the exchange rate between the Chinese yuan and Hong Kong dollar has made tourists more conservative in their spending. The previous trend of lavish buying and purchasing luxury brands has diminished.

As consumer habits change, the itineraries of visitors to Hong Kong have also changed significantly. There is a rise in low-cost or free activities, such as taking photos at MTR stations, street signs, or in front of old police stations, as well as visiting Wong Tai Sin Temple and treasure hunting in Sham Shui Po.

Mainland Chinese online platforms even provide guides on "How to Spend a Day in Hong Kong for HKD 100," reflecting that extravagant shopping tours from mainland China are no longer the mainstream.

Emphasis on attracting local visitors It is evident that the trend of Hong Kong residents traveling to mainland China for consumption has been increasing rather than decreasing in recent months, especially during holidays.

A popular choice is a three-day-two-night trip to popular commercial districts, where people can enjoy various dining, entertainment, and recreational activities.

For example, the "Guangzhou R&F Ski World" covers an area of approximately 75,000 square meters and offers skiing and snow activities throughout the year. They also offer skiing instructor courses and exams certified by the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors/Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance, attracting skiing enthusiasts of different levels.

Consequently, there is an increased demand for private car hire services between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, providing seamless travel itineraries, accommodation arrangements, and point-to-point transportation to cater to the needs of families.

When the overall environment cannot be changed, it is crucial for the tourism industry to upgrade its services and avoid simply adjusting and relaunching outdated tour packages. It is recommended to first understand the industry trends and develop attractive services targeting the desired customer base.

There are various forms of business collaborations, and it is advisable to seek the advice of professional accountants to tailor the most ideal tax planning strategies. With the right  people and the right actions, everyone can become an expert .

See the 2024 Solar Eclipse’s Path of Totality

A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.

The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

Here's what to know about the path of the eclipse and where you can see it.

Read More : How Animals and Nature React to an Eclipse

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.

When does the solar eclipse start and end?

The solar eclipse will begin in Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

The longest duration of totality—which is when the moon completely covers the sun — will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico. Most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes.

Where’s the best place to see the total solar eclipse?

The best place to witness the event is along the path of totality. Thirteen states will be along the path of totality, and many towns across the country are preparing for the deluge of visitors— planning eclipse watch parties and events in the days leading up to totality.
