School Tours

Fota Wildlife Park’s Education Centre is actually one of the biggest in Ireland and is capable of hosting up to 200 students a day.

Tours and Courses are constantly evolving and content varies depending on the age of students and any requests made by their school or teacher.

To ensure students attain as much knowledge as possible, the Park offers a high demonstrator to student ratio, particularly at Secondary level. Fota is unique in Ireland in its ability to present groups with a range of habitats to view and learn about and each course combines theoretical and practical elements – which is crucial for associated learning.

The Education facilities at Fota which is located in East Cork have also been completely revamped in recent years, allowing staff to move activities indoors during more inclement weather.

Primary School Tour

Created to give students a greater appreciation of wildlife, our courses are suitable for students from Junior Infants up to 6th class. The content is simplified or made more challenging depending on the age group, but is based on Irish education syllabus requirements and can be tailored to compliment any work being done in the classroom.

Students are given a Guided Tour of the Park and taken through basic terms such as Feeding Behaviours, Habitats and Threats. They are also given details about individual animals in an effort to make the experience as relevant as possible. Ecology is touched on by spending time in the Woodland areas while a Play approach to Learning is taken with smaller children.

Primary Conservation Explorer Course:

€13.50 per student. Group size: 20 (minimum) – 120 (max)

Fota Wildlife Park is a Discover Primary Science-approved (DPS) centre and offers DPS-registered schools a specially-created day-long option that promotes science, technology and maths. Ecology, practical Woodland activities and a Guided Tour of the Park are all included and the course counts towards schools’ Primary Science award. This course runs between September and March but must be booked early and in advance using the school’s DPS number.

Discover Primary Science Course:

€12.50 per student Group size: 20 (minimum) – 100 (max)

Secondary School Tour

Fota’s Practical Field Ecology course for Junior and Leaving Cert students remains one the most popular options available to schools at secondary level. The course covers all aspects of the Biology module and also allows students time to explore the Park after completing their Woodland survey.

Ecology Course:

€18.50 per student Group size: 20 (minimum) – 120 (max)

An additional Ecology and Conservation course has been created for Transition Year students, with a new team-building day – aimed at 1st years and Transition Year students – introduced in 2012. While the team-building option is a fun day out (with a focus on improving co-operation and communication skills amongst peers), there is an educational element to all of the activities – ensuring that every student leaves with additional knowledge.

Biodiversity Conservation in the 21st Century:

€18.50 per student Group size: 20 (minimum) – 100 (max)

Team-Building Day Out

All Courses must be booked in advance by calling 021 481 2678 or sending an email to: [email protected] . Schools are permitted one teacher FREE for every ten students.

What To Bring

What to bring .

Please read very carefully. This is our recommended list of what to bring. Ballyhass will always provide all safety equipment including, helmets, harnesses, wetsuits and lifejackets.

If your a parent or teacher with any questions please pop down to our site's or call us at Coachford: 021 733 4774 or at Mallow: 022 27773

Student Accessibility

Maximum participation .

A core value of ours is to get every participant as invloved as possible. If there are students with special needs or a physical disabilty, we will do everything in our power to give them the most inclusive day out as possible with their peers. There is no one for all answer as to what each student can do. Every person has different requirments. If you have a student in these categories we will schedule a call to discuss what we can and cant facilitate based on the specfic indvidual. They should always attend the day as being with their friends outdoors even if they cant participate in everything is still very rewarding. Both sites are reasoanbly spectator friendly and again once we know who is coming we can make time allowances or extra staff available as is needed.

What it means to us

  • To work together and bond on such activities as Kayaking, Low Ropes, Jacob's ladder, Team Challenges & Raft Building.
  • To support and encourage each other on the Zipline, Abseiling & Rock Climbing on our natural quarry rock cliffs
  • To discover new personal abilities and challenge themselves on activities like Leap of Faith & Gladiator Challenge

Challenge by choice is one of the values that you will hear again & again at Ballyhass. We will aim to encourage your students out of their comfort zone throughout the trip but they have final say. Everyone who steps on site gains something regardless of age or ability.

Dhammasala Forest Monastery prepares for busy summer

April showers bring May flowers and the beginning of the busiest season at Dhammasala Forest Monastery.

The Dhammasala Forest Monastery follows the Dhammayut branch of Theravada Buddhism and offers many services that are open to the public. The monastery conducts daily food offerings and holds Dhamma talks every Saturday. Visitors of all faiths are welcome to walk along the monastery’s nature trails, especially during the flowering spring season.

“There are more people who walk around during the summer when it’s warmer,” said Tan Mahaviro, an ordained monk at Dhammasala. “Once it gets warmer, more people will start to come.”

The warm weather also signals the beginning of the monastery’s retreat season. Private meditation retreats are offered from May until September.

The retreats are solitary endeavors for practitioners to immerse themselves in meditation while surrounded by nature. Retreat-goers are provided with a few necessities and are expected to abide by the eight precepts practiced by Buddhists on holy days during their stay, including observed practices such as abstaining from entertainment. They are also given the unique opportunity to talk to and engage with the monks through counseling and Dhamma talks.

school tours east cork

Dhamma talks are weekly lessons, held in the Sala or large temple, and led by the monastery’s monks, who speak about various aspects of Buddhist theology. The monks giving the speeches alternate on a week-by-week basis and all have different topics and themes. These talks are conducted entirely in English and are open to anyone with an interest in learning more about Buddhism.

Tan Ryan said that after the Dhamma talks, visitors are welcome to join the monks for coffee, tea, and conversation, and even pet Dhammasala’s resident Samoyed dog Pui Noon, who Ryan describes as a “walking cloud.”

Pui Noon is far from the only animal inhabitant at Dhammasala. Apart from the many wild animals which live on the property grounds; the monastery is also home to three cats who freely roam the grounds.

The monastery also has daily food offerings. In accordance with Dhammayut tradition, monks at the monastery can only eat once a day and are only permitted to eat offerings donated by lay people.

“People should be considerate of a monk’s diet,” said Mahaviro. In his personal experience, Mahaviro has noticed trends in people’s daily food offerings. Some almsgivers attempt to indulge or impress the monks with sugary desserts or heavy entrees. But this style of offering can prove problematic for monks who suffer from medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension. But Dhammasala is more than just isolated meditation huts and pettable animals, the monastery also offers a community for those interested in Buddhism and spirituality in general.

school tours east cork

“I feel like I’m not alone, as we are all speaking the common language of Buddhism,” said Sopheak Chann, a post-doctoral fellow at Michigan State University, who regularly attends the weekly Dhamma talks.

For those who wish to visit the monastery or attend Dhamma talks, information can be found at their website .
