Incredibly frustrating experience!

Not sure why your app does not notify of changes to seats we’ve booked for months. Went to check in and saw my wife and I were separated by 12 rows AND on opposite sides of the 787, without any notification. This is unacceptable and too easy to remedy. A simple e-mail or text would suffice to let me know to work this issue, but no, you just separate us without a word! Then, spent 50 minutes on hold to change seats way back in economy and had to ask to get economy plus bundle refunded. Now on hold to talk to a supervisor because the representative is not authorized to do anything other than change seats and give us a refund of our bundle. Though she was very nice and efficient (after 50 minutes on hold) she was not authorized to do anything to bring me back as a customer. I am reconsidering United as my preferred airline. This has been incredibly frustrating. Oh, and to register a complaint, I have to go to your website and “fill out a form.” I would expect to be contacted by a customer service rep directly after this poor service. Sincerely, Thomas Lawhead

Great Agent Frustrating online system

And checking in I had two experiences: the first was online, and was extremely frustrating, and did not provide options, reflecting my personal circumstances. Additionally, I couldn’t find a phone number for customer service while I was trying to check in and encountering problems, me so I had to engage a separate search. The second experience wash great: with the help from your agent Gretchen. Gretchen positively delightful. I explained my handicap to her and she help me find appropriate accommodation. She however didn’t have authority to help me with the United online system failure regarding my baggage check. Luckily with her help and encouragement, iI reengaged the online check in. I want to make a special point of stating that with Gretchen’s help and courtesy, what seemed on the verge of becoming a very bad experience ruined to a satisfying one. She was very charming and polite and found creative way to sort out my personal problem. The problem she was not able to help me with, is my coming that comparing United economy class, to those of other airlines like Jet Blue, American Southwest Delta, and and all the international airlines I use. The best airlines (Southwest, Jet Blue, Jet Blue, for example allow economy customers one free, checked bag, and addition to the carry-on. Except for the lovely agent, Gretchen, I was very disappointed in United Airlines performance so far with regards to this flight.

Frustrating experience

Had a bad experience last night at Aspen Airport. Flight was delayed because of an incoming aircraft delay. Notification was horrible, leading many people to go to the airport and wait for four hours. Fortunately I have a residence nearby and was able to go back to my house and wait there. There was, of course the expense of the Uber. Then got back to the airport around 945 pm and everything seemed good -we loaded on the plane and pulled away from the gate and then had to cancel because of lack of deicing equipment. I was automatically rebooked to this morning. That flight time changed suddenly a little after 7 am and then when I went on your app to rebook, it offered the option of choosing standby without losing your original confirmation. I went to do that, but was unable to do anything other than confirm a different flight. I did that, despite that not being my preference, and then was not assigned to a seat. When I went to choose seats, the first class seats which I had paid for in my previous flight were not available. No big deal. But when I went to choose an exit row seat, it wanted to charge me $69 more despite the fact that I had originally had a first class booking. I spoke to an agent via the text option and she was unable to help me! What’s the point of having a customer service agent if they can’t provide service to the customer? overall, United has some big issues and needs to understand that there has to be a focus on the customer.

Like other major U.S. airlines, United provides travel funds for its customers. These can come about as a gift due to a canceled flight or other reasons. However, finding and using these funds isn’t the most intuitive experience. So let’s look at how to apply travel funds on United, where you can find them and the different types of travel funds.

Step-by-step guide to using your United travel funds

Applying your travel funds to a United flight is both easy and intuitive. First, you’ll want to search for a flight directly on the United site.

find my trip with united

Your United funds can be used for any class of service, no matter which cabin you’d initially booked. At this point, you’ll select whichever flight suits your needs.

find my trip with united

The next page will include your traveler information, including your name, birth date and frequent flyer info. This will all need to be filled out before continuing to the next page.

TravelBank funds can’t be used to pay the taxes and fees on an award flight.

Future flight credits: You could only apply one credit to each booking if these credits stemmed from a canceled flight. If you’ve received a future flight credit due to changing to a cheaper fare, you can combine multiple credits at once.

Electronic travel certificate: You can apply up to 10 of these to your booking.

You’ll need to click through seat selection and other bundle options to reach the checkout page.

find my trip with united

You can either apply your travel credits or your TravelBank cash to your flight costs. As we noted above, how many you’ll be able to add to your booking will depend on the type you hold.

If your TravelBank balance doesn’t cover your total flight cost, United may allow you to cover the cost by combining TravelBank cash with:

MileagePlus Miles.

Credit cards.

Travel certificates.

How do you get United travel funds?

There are three major types of travel funds that you’ll find within your United account.

Future flight credit

When you cancel an eligible flight: Let’s say you purchased a nonrefundable flight in 2021 but needed to cancel it as government restrictions made it impossible to travel. United has eliminated change fees for most of its flights (excluding basic economy), including all those that originate in the U.S. In this case, you’ll receive future flight credit valid for later travel.

When you change your flight to a less expensive fare: If you need to alter your flight and the new fare is cheaper than the previous one, the remaining funds will become a travel credit.

Electronic travel certificate

When you volunteer for a bump: Airlines overbook their seats to maximize efficiency. However, they have too many passengers on the plane in some cases and need volunteers to take a later flight. You can earn a travel certificate for doing this.

As a gesture of goodwill: In some cases, United may be willing to offer you travel credits for future travel.

United TravelBank cash

Unlike airlines such as Delta, United doesn’t sell gift cards. Instead, it offers the United TravelBank. You can purchase TravelBank cash in six different increments, and there’s no limit to the amount of TravelBank funds you can buy each year. However, there is a limit of $5,000 per day on TravelBank purchases and they’re all nonrefundable.

You will need to be logged in to your MileagePlus account to purchase TravelBank cash.

Where can you see your United travel fund balance?

Searching for either of your United travel funds is simple. First, you’ll need to log in to your account using the “Sign In” button in the top right corner of the United homepage.

find my trip with united

Once you’ve logged in, you’ll want to go to your main profile page. From here, you’ll want to select the Wallet dropdown:

find my trip with united

This will show you all the different methods you have available to pay for your United tickets. For example, if you’re searching for flight credits from canceled flights, you’ll want to select Travel Credits. If you’re looking for United TravelBank funds, you’ll want to choose the TravelBank tab.

find my trip with united

Future flight credits will display your confirmation number and the time you have left until your credits expire.

find my trip with united

Your TravelBank balance is also available and will show how long you have before those funds expire.

How long are United travel funds good for?

Future flight credits: These credits can be used for up to a year after the original issue date of the ticket.

Electronic travel certificates: These are valid for up to 24 months after they were issued.

TravelBank cash: This credit is valid for five years from the date it was deposited into your account.

What can United travel funds be used for?

Future flight credits. These can be used for flights on United and partner-operated flights. You can also use these credits for other purchases such as Basic economy seat selection, Economy Plus seating and preferred seat selections. Future flight credits must be used by the person on the original ticket.

Electronic travel certificates. These have the same limitations as future flight credits. However, these certificates can be used by any traveler.

TravelBank cash. These funds are only applicable towards flights.

Can I use more than one certificate at a time?

The rules for applying travel funds will differ depending on which types you hold.

If you’re looking to use your United travel funds

United has three primary options for its travel funds, including future flight credits, travel certificates for canceled flights and purchased TravelBank cash. Apply these funds when purchasing a flight, though you’ll want to be aware of any limitations before you book.

United Airlines MileagePlus: Guide to earning and redeeming miles, elite status and more

Kyle Olsen

Editor's Note

In 2023, United massively devalued the MileagePlus program by increasing award rates by up to 122% without advance notice. MileagePlus also uses dynamic pricing (as opposed to award charts), giving the airline total flexibility to adjust award prices.

However, the program can still be valuable to its members since United miles never expire , you can use PlusPoints and miles to confirm long-haul Polaris upgrades and MileagePlus now lets you pool miles .

This guide will provide you with all the necessary information on the program, including how to earn United miles and status and how to maximize your miles for award travel.

United MileagePlus overview

find my trip with united

With over 100 million members, United MileagePlus is one of the largest loyalty programs in the world.

MileagePlus members can earn miles by flying United and its partners, as well as through non-flight activities like credit card spending, shopping and dining. You can redeem your miles for award travel on the airline as well as its Star Alliance partners.

MileagePlus members can also earn United elite status by meeting a certain threshold of Premier qualifying points. Elite status includes additional benefits, such as upgrades, preferred and Economy Plus seating , priority boarding, and free checked bags. Additionally, United offers various cobranded credit cards that can help members earn miles more quickly and enjoy additional perks.

United Airlines partners

find my trip with united

You can earn and redeem miles with various international airlines through United Airlines' membership in the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance. United Premier members can often enjoy perks like lounge access and extra baggage allowance when traveling with these partners.

Here's a look at United's current Star Alliance partners.

  • Aegean Airlines
  • Air New Zealand
  • All Nippon Airways
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Austrian Airlines
  • Brussels Airlines
  • Copa Airlines
  • Croatia Airlines
  • Ethiopian Airlines
  • EVA Airways
  • Juneyao Airlines (a connecting partner)
  • LOT Polish Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Shenzhen Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • TAP Air Portugal
  • Thai Airways
  • Turkish Airlines

United also partners with several airlines outside of the Star Alliance:

  • Air Dolomiti
  • Azul Brazilian Airlines
  • Boutique Air
  • Discover Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Olympic Air
  • Silver Airways
  • Virgin Australia

Partners can have their own limitations regarding MileagePlus members — including applicable bonuses, eligible fare classes and excluded routes, so be sure to review United's airline partners page for full details of each one.

United Airlines Premier status

find my trip with united

United Airlines has four levels of elite status : Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K. There's also an exclusive Global Services tier, which you can only earn after completing 4 million flight miles or receiving a personal invitation.

To earn United Premier status, you must take at least four United or United Express flights and either earn PQPs or a combination of Premier qualifying flights and PQPs. You can earn PQFs and PQPs by flying United or its partners. You can also earn PQPs by spending on most of United's cobranded credit cards .

This is what it takes to qualify for United status in 2025:

United Premier members enjoy perks like bonus miles on paid tickets, free checked bags and complimentary waitlisted upgrades on most United-operated flights.

Higher-tier members receive perks like complimentary Economy Plus seating, PlusPoints (which can be used to confirm upgrades), Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status and Star Alliance Gold status , which comes with perks when flying on other Star Alliance carriers.

How to earn United miles

find my trip with united

You can refer to our guide on how to earn United miles for the complete picture, but here are some of the most popular ways to boost your MileagePlus balance.

Fly on United Airlines

When flying on United-marketed and -operated tickets, you earn MileagePlus miles based on your ticket's price minus taxes and your MileagePlus status rather than the distance you fly.

Here's how many miles you'll earn per dollar spent based on your level of status:

  • General member : 5 miles
  • Premier Silver : 7 miles
  • Premier Gold : 8 miles
  • Premier Platinum : 9 miles
  • Premier 1K : 11 miles

For example, suppose you buy a one-way United ticket from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with a base fare of $210 and $30 in taxes and fees. In that case, you'd earn 1,050 miles as a regular MileagePlus member but 2,310 miles if you're a top-tier Premier 1K member.

These earning rates also apply if you book United's basic economy fare class.

Fly on partner airlines

You can earn United MileagePlus miles when flying with United's partners, but it can be complicated. If you book a partner flight through United (indicated by a 016 ticket number), you'll earn miles based on your ticket fare and elite status.

But if you book on partner ticket stock, you'll earn miles based on the length of your flight and fare class. Generally, you can see your fare class when booking your flight or in your confirmation email. Mileage-earning rates vary by airline, so check your booking class and use United's partner airline list to determine your award miles. As expected, premium-cabin tickets earn more miles than economy tickets, and Premier members are eligible for bonus miles on select partners.

Get and use United Airlines credit cards

United's cobranded credit cards issued by Chase are among the most popular ways to earn MileagePlus miles. Here's a look at the sign-up bonuses and earning rates on some of our favorite United credit cards:

  • United℠ Explorer Card : Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. The card earns 2 miles per dollar on United purchases, dining and direct hotel purchases, and 1 mile per dollar elsewhere.
  • United Quest℠ Card : Earn 60,000 bonus miles and 500 Premier qualifying points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. The card earns 3 miles per dollar on United purchases (immediately after earning your $125 annual United purchase credit); 2 miles per dollar on dining, travel and select streaming services; and 1 mile per dollar elsewhere.
  • United℠ Business Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. The card earns 2 miles per dollar on United purchases, gas stations, dining (including eligible delivery services), office supply stores, local transit and commuting (including ride-hailing services, taxicabs, train tickets, tolls and mass transit), and 1 mile elsewhere. You'll also earn 5,000 bonus miles on each card anniversary when you have both the United Business Card and a personal United credit card.
  • United Club℠ Infinite Card : Earn 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. The card earns 4 miles per dollar spent on purchases with United, and 2 miles per dollar spent on all other travel purchases, dining and eligible food delivery services. All other purchases earn 1 mile per dollar spent.

United credit cards with an annual fee allow you to earn 25 PQPs for every $500 you spend on the card, but limits apply. For example, the Explorer Card earns a maximum of 1,000 PQPs per calendar year.

TPG values Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents apiece, while United miles are worth 1.4 cents apiece. You can also redeem your Chase points for United flights in the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal. When you do this, you'll generally earn United miles since your ticket will be coded as a paid fare.

More ways to earn United miles

Like most airlines, United has an online shopping portal where you can earn miles for your online purchases.

You can also earn more miles with the MileagePlus X app by purchasing select merchant gift cards. Participating merchants include major brands like Walmart, Staples and Panera Bread. Primary United credit card holders also earn a 25% bonus on miles earned from these purchases.

Meanwhile, MileagePlus Dining awards up to 5 miles per dollar when you dine at participating restaurants and use a linked credit card.

Other ways to earn United miles include buying miles , transferring Marriott Bonvoy points and booking hotels, car rentals and cruises through the United travel portal.

United MileagePlus pooling

find my trip with united

In 2024, United announced the addition of miles pooling , which will allow MileagePlus members of all ages to share and redeem miles in one account.

Since there is no age restriction on members being able to sign up for a MileagePlus account, extra and unused miles from kids, for instance, can be used in a single account. Up to five members can be added to a pool, and there is no limit to the number of miles you can contribute to a pool.

However, you must be at least 18 years old to create a pool and become the "pool leader." You can also only operate in one pool at a time, so you cannot be a part of several pools.

Some stipulations exist; you can enter and exit a pool at your own discretion, but the airline will enforce a 90-day "cooling" period when you exit a pool, so you'll have to wait before joining another one.

When you're contributing miles to a pool, you have 24 hours to reverse a transaction. After 24 hours have passed, you cannot get the miles you contributed to a pool back.

United also stated that pooling miles will not affect a member's Premier status.

How to redeem United miles

find my trip with united

United has retired its award charts and now uses dynamic award pricing. Still, there are ways to maximize the program .

To redeem United miles , go to united.com or the United app. United Airlines credit card holders and Premier members can access additional award space on United flights. If you hold a United credit card or Premier status, log in to your MileagePlus account before searching for award space.

United also has an option called Money + Miles, which offers a fixed rate of 1 cent per mile. This option is available on the final payment screen for eligible tickets. When possible, steer clear of this option since it's a suboptimal use of miles.

Best uses of United miles

You can refer to our guide on maximizing the MileagePlus program , but here are a few of our favorite uses of United miles.

You might find award options starting around 5,000 miles on high-frequency, short-haul flights. Although these flights almost always cost less than $100, these awards can be a great way to keep your travel plans flexible since United no longer charges redeposit fees when you cancel award flights.

For something a little more complex, the United Excursionist Perk is a great way to maximize your United miles when booking multicity trips. Basically, the first flight within a region different from your departure and destination regions is free in the same class as the preceding flight. For example, if you book a round-trip business-class flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) and back, you can also get a "free" business-class flight from London to another European airport, such as Brussels Airport (BRU).

This allows you to fly to London, then Brussels and then back to Newark for the same number of miles as a simple round-trip flight between Newark and London.

To book, use the "Multi-city" search feature on united.com. In our experience, many of United's phone agents aren't familiar with this lesser-known United sweet spot .

Besides the Excursionist Perk, you can maximize United miles by booking a transcontinental flight for 15,000 miles for economy class and 30,000 miles for business class when there's saver award space. You might also consider keeping a healthy "just in case" sum of miles in your MileagePlus account for last-minute situations.

find my trip with united

Finally, you can consider using United miles to fly on top partner carriers — including products like ANA's "The Room" business class or EVA Air's business class , which offer high-end amenities but come in with high award rates.

Related: Feels like first class: Flying ANA The Room business class from LA-Tokyo

Other uses of United miles

You can use United miles for United Club memberships , inflight Wi-Fi purchases, TSA PreCheck fees , car rentals and hotel stays. You can also transfer United miles to Marriott Bonvoy . However, it's not recommended, as the value you'll get from these redemptions is almost always lower than the value of MileagePlus miles for flight redemptions.

The same can be said for redeeming your miles for gift cards through the MileagePlus X app, retail products, Broadway tickets, newspapers and magazines. These options generally provide less than 0.5 cents per mile.

Bottom line

If you're a frequent United Airlines traveler, sticking with the airline's loyalty program might make sense. By knowing the intricacies of the MileagePlus program, you can get lots of miles and redeem them for top value. And if you fly enough, you can enjoy all the elite status perks.

9 simple google flights tips and tricks to try on your next trip.

Snag sweet travel deals with Google's flight search platform

Google Flights is among the best apps for cheap travel . It's the one-stop search engine for airplane trips and consolidates hundreds of top online travel agencies (OTAs). You can search for the best ones in a central hub from your mobile phone or personal computer . You won't have to visit multiple websites, and you can find anything based on round or multi-city trip entries and other criteria. Flights also has tools for cost comparison, so you can see whether current prices are high compared to historical data. Here's how to save money and reach your desired locations quickly.

1 Use the price comparison tool

Google Flights has a date grid that displays departure and return dates around your selected travel dates. Dates with the lowest prices indicate the figures in green. Those in red indicate higher-than-usual prices. Use the grid to make comparisons and find the best rates for your budget.

The price graph shows a visual representation of flight patterns. You'll identify optimal times to fly based on pricing trends. You can even view the full price history for a route up to 60 days before the current date. Here's how to use these features:

1. On your browser, visit google.com/travel/flights .

2. Enter your location and destination. Then click Search .

3. Click Date grid to make price comparisons.

4. Select Price graph to view fare trends by month or week.

How to easily pack your electronics for travel

2 explore affordable travel options.

The Google Flights search tools help you find available and affordable airlines. Typically, you'll enter your location and destination in the search fields. This function only brings flight results along the route you selected. If you leave the destination field blank, Flights shows a map in the Explore tab . You can pan it for airlines with the best fares.

If your travel plans are flexible, you could save on flights by considering alternative travel dates. Flights automatically sets a sample trip duration lasting for a week and within the next six months. This default date range might not give you the best deals. Click the sample date, or use the search fields on the left sidebar to adjust dates according to your preferences.

3 Get inspiration on what to do

The Explore tab is where Google Flights shows airlines, prices, and available flights. You can also use it for inspiration when planning your schedule. Clicking a destination on the map shows places to see in the left sidebar. You can also find hotels and vacation rentals if you don't have accommodation.

The sidebar also shows peak and off seasons to help you determine the best time to visit a place. This way, you avoid travel disasters when there's too much population, bad weather, and other factors. People often ask questions about locations on Google Search. Explore pulls the ones related to a place, allowing you to expand them quickly without running a separate search.

4 Search and book multi-city trips

Searching for destinations and booking repeatedly on Google Flights is stressful. The platform allows you to perform multi-city searches simultaneously. Plus, you can make broader comparisons between fares and save money on international trips.

Instead of booking separate one-way flights, you'll book multi-city flights as a single unit with supported airlines or separately. Here's how to use the feature:

1. Go to the Google Flights website .

2. Click Round trip . Then, select Multi-city .

3. Click Add flight to insert more fields. Then, enter where you're flying from and where to in each of them.

4. Enter the departure dates. Then, click Search . The platform provides results for all available flights in your selected regions.

5 Automatic price guarantee

Price guarantee helps you secure the best prices for your flights. The feature is available for flights with charges that Google has assurance of before it takes off. If you turn on the feature for a booked flight, Google monitors the rates until you board and gives you a refund if it turns out cheaper than originally displayed.

However, the price difference must exceed $5 to qualify for a payout. Also, you can only receive a maximum payout of $500 per Google account within a year. The feature works for trips you book on Google Flights, as well as those you discover on the platform but eventually book on the airline's website.

Price Guarantee is a pilot program and is still under testing. Not all flights are eligible for it until Google expands it. Eligible flights have a colored badge near them. Click a checkbox when booking to activate the feature.

How to plan a road trip with an electric vehicle

6 set fare alerts.

While Google Flights does its best to save your money, airline fares can change at any time. Price surges usually happen closer to departure dates because fewer seats are available. Airlines try to capitalize on travelers' willingness to pay for the remaining ones. Other times, pricing drops or remains stable when fewer travelers book flights.

You can set alerts to monitor these changes for specific routes on Flights. You'll receive automatic notifications via email. It saves you from constantly checking the prices yourself. Here's how to do it:

1. On the Google Flights website, enter your departure point and destination.

2. Set your departure and return dates.

3. Click Search .

4. Turn on the toggle switch beside Track prices . Flights sends you email notifications when travel fares change for your route within the specified dates.

7 Confirm ghosting prices

Ghosting prices refer to situations where you spot attractive flight fares. When you try to book them, the price jumps or becomes unavailable. There's an explanation for it. Google Flights is a flight search engine, not a booking platform. Even though it provides booking buttons and options, all links lead you to book with airlines or online travel agencies.

When you experience ghosting dates, airlines have updated their prices. However, there's a slight delay before Google Flights receives the information. Double-check the airline's website or contact them. You may still be able to access the ghosting prices.

8 Book layover flights

Layover flights are connecting air trips that include one or more stops between your starting point and destination. They are often cheaper than nonstop flights for the same route. Airlines usually have hubs or stop points for travelers going to various destinations.

If you're flexible with your travel plans, booking two separate flights – one from Point A to the layover city and another from the layover city to Point B – can be cheaper than booking a direct flight. However, it will take longer to reach your destination.

Google Flights has a handy layover duration feature. It tells you how long you'll wait at the airport before boarding your next flight to your final destination. Use this tool to filter the shortest route for you. Follow the steps below to start:

1. On the Flights page, click the Connecting airports search filter.

2. Use the slider to adjust your preferred layover duration.

3. Select your preferred airports. The platform shows the results.

9 Change your currency, language, or location on Google Flights

Google Flights typically sets the search currency, location, and language to match your IP address. If you're in the United States, you'll see prices in dollars. But it may be wrong. There are buttons beneath the menus and web pages for changing your language, country, and currency. You can also access the buttons on the platform's menu. Here's how to use both methods:

1. On the Google Flights website, scroll down to the bottom of the web page.

2. Click the Language , Country , and Currency options to adjust the settings to your preferences.

3. Alternatively, click the menu icon in the upper-left corner. Then, use the corresponding options.

How to pair earbuds or AirPods to a plane's seatback entertainment system

Use google flights to save on your next trip.

Google Flights finds flights well, but that's where its efforts stop. You'll need trip-planning features to enhance your experience. You'll find them in other dedicated travel apps , like itinerary building, budgeting, activity recommendations, and offline access. Some apps help you find accomodations and help you pack. Download them for free on the Google Play Store.

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

  • Share full article

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

find my trip with united

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Dubai flooding hobbles major airport's operations as "historic weather event" brings torrential rains to UAE

Updated on: April 17, 2024 / 5:57 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Dubai, United Arab Emirates  — The desert nation of the United Arab Emirates attempted to dry out Wednesday from the heaviest rain ever recorded there after a deluge flooded out Dubai International Airport, disrupting travel through the world's busiest airfield for international travel. The state-run WAM news agency called the rain Tuesday "a historic weather event" that surpassed "anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949."

The rains began late Monday, soaking the sands and roadways of Dubai with some 0.79 inches of rain, according to meteorological data collected at Dubai International Airport. The storms intensified around 9 a.m. local time Tuesday and continued throughout the day, dumping more rain and hail onto the overwhelmed city.

Flooding impacts Dubai International Airport

By the end of Tuesday, more than 5.59 inches of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees just 3.73 inches of rain fall at Dubai International Airport, a hub for the long-haul carrier Emirates.

At the airport, standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. Arrivals were halted Tuesday night and passengers struggled to reach terminals through the floodwater covering surrounding roads.

TOPSHOT-UAE-BAHRAIN-OMAN-WEATHER-FLOOD

The airport said in a  series of social media posts  that all operations were halted for about 25 minutes on Tuesday afternoon and that all arrivals would be diverted after that "until the weather conditions improve." Late Wednesday morning, the airport and the flagship carrier Emirates were still warning travelers not to come to the airport unless absolutely necessary, saying all flight check-in was still suspended.

"Flights continue to be delayed and diverted. Please check your flight status directly with your airline," the airport said in a tweet. "We are working hard to recover operations as quickly as possible in very challenging conditions."

One couple, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity in a country with strict laws that criminalize critical speech, called the situation at the airport "absolute carnage."

"You cannot get a taxi. There's people sleeping in the Metro station. There's people sleeping in the airport," the man said Wednesday.

They ended up getting a taxi to near their home some 18 miles away, but floodwater on the road stopped them. A bystander helped them over a highway barrier with their carry-on luggage, the bottles of gin they picked up from a duty-free store clinking away.

UAE-BAHRAIN-OMAN-WEATHER-FLOOD

Paul Griffiths, the airport's CEO, acknowledged continued issues with flooding Wednesday morning, saying every place an aircraft could be safely parked was taken. Some aircraft had been diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, the city-state's second airfield.

"It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don't think anyone has ever seen conditions like it," Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye. "We are in uncharted territory, but I can assure everyone we are working as hard as we possibly can to make sure our customers and staff are looked after."

Did "cloud-seeding" contribute?

Rain also fell in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. However, the rains were acute across the UAE. One reason may have been " cloud seeding ," in which small planes flown by the government go through clouds burning special salt flares. Those flares can increase precipitation.

Several reports quoted meteorologists at the National Center for Meteorology as saying they flew six or seven cloud-seeding flights before the rains. The center did not immediately respond to questions Wednesday, though flight-tracking data analyzed by the AP showed one aircraft affiliated with the UAE's cloud-seeding efforts flew around the country Sunday.

The UAE, which relies heavily on energy-hungry desalination plants to provide water, conducts cloud seeding in part to increase its dwindling, limited groundwater.

Flooding closes schools across UAE

Schools across the UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, largely shut ahead of the storm and government employees were largely working remotely if they could. Many workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate ones stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering some roads.

Heavy rains over Dubai

Authorities sent tanker trucks out into the streets and highways to pump away the water. Water poured into some homes, forcing people to bail out their houses.

The country's hereditary rulers offered no overall damage or injury information for the nation, as some people slept in their flooded vehicles Tuesday night. In Ras al-Khaimah, the country's northernmost emirate, police said a 70-year-old man died when his vehicle was swept away by floodwater.

Fujairah, an emirate on the UAE's eastern coast, saw the heaviest rainfall Tuesday with 5.7 inches falling there.

Authorities canceled school and the government instituted remote work again for Wednesday.

Rain is unusual in the UAE, an arid, Arabian Peninsula nation, but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months. Many roads and other areas lack drainage given the lack of regular rainfall, causing flooding.

Meanwhile in neighboring Oman, a sultanate that rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, at least 19 people were killed in heavy rains in recent days, according to a statement Wednesday from the country's National Committee for Emergency Management. That includes some 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult, prompting condolences from rulers across the region.

Heavy rains over Dubai

Climatologists have warned for years that human-driven climate change is fueling more extreme and less predictable weather events across the globe.

Parts of southern Russia and Central Asia have also been dealing for days with unusually damaging amounts of rainfall and snowmelt, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate to higher ground and killing more than 60 people in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
