Hi there ... I have been searching Amazon for travel guides and maps, and all three of the above get good reviews.

In your opinion, which of the three is the most useful? Or is there another one that you would recommend instead.

Many thanks in advance for any and all input.

I don't think there is any one "best" guide. It's really a matter of preference of how the information is presented.

Do you live in a city/place that has travel guides written about it? How about checking those out at a local store and seeing which one appeals to you.

My favourites are Lonely Planet to read beforehand and Michael Middleditch guide to take and carry with me daily.

fodor's scotland travel guide

You would do better to decide what you would like to include in your trip and then come on TA to ask those. 'on the ground' for up to date advice.

fodor's scotland travel guide

Certainly the general consensus of residents in places where Rick Steves purports to guide is that his are the worst of the available guides. It is not just the inaccuracies (to which all guides are occasionally prone) but the general tone of smugness coupled with the inaccuracies.

IMHO, the most useful guide book should give you enough information to decide what YOU would like to see and do, not give you a "must see" list that has no relation to the individual reader's interests.

When I travel I rather like the Lonely Planet Guides, which are no longer targeted solely at backpackers on an extremely tight budget, and give helpful notes on history which can put what you see in context.

However, the Insight Guides are praised on this forum for their excellent photos and concise information.

I have only seen Frodot's and Frommer's for other countries and they both felt a bit middle aged to me. Although I am middle aged myself, I didn't feel either gave me any particular insight into my destinations, but I can see that they could be helpful for getting around.

Rough Guides for me !

I like the Insight guides and also DK Eyewitness guides. Agree with others re: RS, have had a look at his guides to a few places I am familiar with and imho they were very narrow and blinkered. I understand that he has encouraged many traveler's from the US to consider independent travel but this is the only plus that I can see.

http://traveldk.com/

I think rick steves intentionally leaves out several places because he wants his readers to do their own discovery.

"I think Rick Steves........wants his readers to do their own discovery" At the speed he has them charging around the country with trips timed to the minute???? I doubt it.

I don't know what the last one is so you've really only got to choose between two ;)

Thank you all very much ... this has been extremely helpful. I will cross Rick Steves off my list. I wonder why he gets such high ratings on Amazon?

I will look at Lonely Planet and the .Dorling Kindersley 'Eyewitness' Guide.

Mez3000, we live in a small town near NYC with no bookstore nearby ... We had the greatest independent bookstore for years, but then a big box bookstore (Borders) came to town and caused the independent to go out of of businees. And THEN Borders went out of business! So now we have no local bookstores and I have to rely on Amazon.

Thank you again for your help.

Exploring the Great Debate: Frommer’s vs. Fodor’s – Which Travel Guide Reigns Supreme?

' src=

Embarking on a journey to a new and enchanting destination is undeniably exhilarating, but with countless adventures awaiting, where does one begin? Enter the great debate that has left avid travelers pondering for decades: Frommer’s or Fodor’s? These revered travel guidebooks have long been hailed as the ultimate companions, steering wanderlust souls in the right direction. But in a world filled with boundless possibilities and unchartered territories, which guide reigns supreme? Join us as we delve into this riveting competition, uncovering the hidden gems and secret treasures nestled within the pages of Frommer’s and Fodor’s. Prepare for a thrilling ride through captivating reviews, vibrant imagery, and expert insights, as we strive to settle the age-old question – which guide truly holds the key to unlocking unforgettable adventures?

I. The Evolution of Travel Guides

Travel guides have long been an essential tool for travelers seeking information, recommendations, and insights to enhance their journeys. These guides provide valuable insights into the destinations, including accommodation options, restaurants, attractions, and local customs. Over the years, two prominent publishers, Frommer’s and Fodor’s, have emerged as industry leaders, offering comprehensive travel guides that cater to the diverse needs and preferences of travelers.

A. The significance of travel guides in trip planning

Travel guides play a crucial role in trip planning, offering a wealth of information that helps travelers make informed decisions. They serve as a valuable resource for both novice and seasoned travelers alike, providing detailed descriptions of destinations, highlighting must-see attractions, and offering practical advice on transportation, safety, and cultural considerations. With the abundance of information available online, travel guides serve as a trusted source, filtering through the noise and presenting curated recommendations that can save time and enhance the overall travel experience.

B. The emergence of Frommer’s and Fodor’s as leading travel guide publishers

Frommer’s and Fodor’s have established themselves as leading publishers in the travel guide industry, each with their distinct approach and style. Frommer’s, founded by Arthur Frommer in 1957, gained popularity with its budget-conscious approach, focusing on affordable travel options and insider tips for exploring destinations. Fodor’s, on the other hand, was founded by Eugene Fodor in 1936 and became known for its comprehensive and detailed guides, providing in-depth information on a wide range of destinations.

C. The impact of digital platforms on the travel guide industry

With the advent of digital platforms, the travel guide industry has undergone significant transformation. Online travel resources, such as TripAdvisor and Google Maps, have revolutionized the way travelers access information, allowing them to read reviews, view photos, and even book accommodations and activities directly. This shift towards digital platforms has led travel guide publishers like Frommer’s and Fodor’s to adapt and embrace the digital age, providing digital versions of their guides, mobile apps, and online content to cater to the changing needs of travelers.

In conclusion, travel guides have evolved from being essential printed companions to embracing the digital age. Frommer’s and Fodor’s have emerged as industry leaders, offering comprehensive guides that cater to the diverse needs of travelers. With the impact of digital platforms, the travel guide industry continues to adapt and innovate, ensuring that travelers have access to valuable information and recommendations to enhance their travel experiences.

II. Understanding Frommer’s

A. the history and legacy of frommer’s.

Frommer’s, founded by Arthur Frommer in 1957, has established itself as one of the most influential travel guidebook series in the world. With a rich history and a legacy that continues to this day, Frommer’s has become synonymous with budget-friendly travel advice and comprehensive destination coverage.

Frommer’s founding and early success: Arthur Frommer, a former GI stationed in Europe during World War II, developed a passion for travel and exploration. Inspired by his experiences abroad, he decided to share his knowledge and insights with fellow travelers. In 1957, he published his first travel guidebook, “Europe on $5 a Day,” which quickly gained popularity among budget-conscious travelers seeking affordable yet fulfilling travel experiences.

Frommer’s reputation for budget-friendly travel advice: One of the key aspects that set Frommer’s apart from other travel guidebooks was its focus on providing practical advice for travelers on a tight budget. Frommer’s guidebooks offered valuable tips on where to find affordable accommodations, local eateries with reasonable prices, and free or low-cost attractions to visit. This approach resonated with travelers who wanted to make the most of their limited funds without compromising on the quality of their experiences.

The influence of Arthur Frommer’s personal experiences on the guidebooks: Arthur Frommer’s own travel experiences shaped the content and tone of Frommer’s guidebooks. His firsthand knowledge of destinations, cultural insights, and personal anecdotes added a unique touch to the guidebooks, making them more relatable and engaging for readers. Frommer’s emphasis on immersing oneself in the local culture and discovering hidden gems off the beaten path further distinguished the guidebooks from their competitors.

Over the years, Frommer’s has expanded its range of guidebooks to cover destinations worldwide, catering to different travel styles and interests. However, the core principles of budget-friendly travel advice and a personal touch remain integral to the brand’s identity. Frommer’s continues to be a trusted resource for travelers seeking reliable information and insider tips to make their journeys memorable without breaking the bank.

B. Key Features and Highlights of Frommer’s Guides

Frommer’s travel guides have long been a staple for travelers seeking detailed and reliable information about their chosen destination. These guides stand out for their comprehensive coverage, expert recommendations, and focus on providing travelers with authentic local experiences. Here are some key features and highlights of Frommer’s guides:

In-depth destination coverage : Frommer’s guides leave no stone unturned when it comes to providing extensive information about a destination. Whether it’s a bustling city or a remote village, Frommer’s guides offer detailed insights into the history, culture, attractions, and practical information of each place.

Expert recommendations for accommodations, dining, and attractions : One of the strengths of Frommer’s guides lies in their expert recommendations. Their team of travel writers and experts meticulously research and review accommodations, dining options, and attractions to provide readers with trustworthy suggestions. These recommendations help travelers make informed decisions and enhance their overall experience.

Focus on local experiences and off-the-beaten-path destinations : Frommer’s guides are known for their emphasis on uncovering hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations. They go beyond the popular tourist attractions and delve into the local culture, traditions, and experiences that make a place truly unique. This focus on local experiences allows travelers to discover authentic aspects of a destination that may not be found in other guidebooks.

User-friendly layout and organization : Frommer’s guides are designed with the reader in mind, featuring a user-friendly layout and organization. They are structured in a way that allows travelers to easily navigate through the guide and find the information they need. From clear maps and indexes to well-organized sections, Frommer’s guides make it effortless for readers to plan their trip and make the most of their time in a destination.

Overall, Frommer’s guides offer a wealth of information, expert recommendations, and a focus on local experiences that make them a go-to resource for travelers seeking a comprehensive and authentic travel guide . Whether you’re a first-time traveler or a seasoned explorer, Frommer’s guides are sure to enhance your travel experience and help you create unforgettable memories.

C. Criticisms and Limitations of Frommer’s Guides

Frommer’s Guides, although widely respected and trusted by many travelers, are not without their criticisms and limitations. While they offer valuable insights and recommendations, there are certain aspects where they may fall short. Here are some of the key criticisms and limitations of Frommer’s Guides:

Limited coverage of luxury travel options : One of the criticisms often leveled against Frommer’s Guides is their limited coverage of luxury travel options. These guides tend to focus more on budget-friendly and mid-range accommodations, restaurants, and attractions, which may not cater to travelers seeking a more lavish and upscale experience . For those looking for high-end hotels, gourmet dining experiences, or exclusive activities, Frommer’s Guides may not provide the in-depth information desired.

Relatively fewer updates compared to digital platforms : In today’s fast-paced world, where travel information is constantly evolving, Frommer’s Guides may struggle to keep up with the latest updates. While they do release updated versions periodically, the time lag between editions can result in some information becoming outdated. This is especially true when it comes to specific details such as restaurant closures, changes in transportation options, or newly opened attractions. Travelers who rely solely on Frommer’s Guides may run the risk of encountering outdated or inaccurate information.

Potential bias towards certain destinations or attractions : Another limitation of Frommer’s Guides is the potential for bias towards certain destinations or attractions. As with any travel guide, personal preferences and opinions of the authors can influence the recommendations provided. Frommer’s Guides may have a stronger focus on popular destinations or attractions, potentially overlooking lesser-known gems that could be of interest to a broader range of travelers. Additionally, there is always the possibility of partnerships or advertising influencing the content, which may result in certain destinations or businesses receiving more favorable coverage than others.

While these criticisms and limitations should be taken into consideration, it is important to note that Frommer’s Guides still offer valuable insights and recommendations for travelers. They provide a solid foundation for planning a trip and can be a reliable resource, particularly for budget-conscious travelers or those seeking a well-rounded overview of a destination. However, it is always beneficial to supplement the information from Frommer’s Guides with other sources, such as digital platforms, local recommendations, or other travel guidebooks, to ensure a more comprehensive and up-to-date travel experience.

III. Unveiling Fodor’s

A. the origins and notable milestones of fodor’s.

Fodor’s, one of the most prominent names in the travel guide industry, has a rich history and a legacy that spans several decades. The journey of Fodor’s began in 1936, when Eugene Fodor, a Hungarian-born author and travel enthusiast, published his first guidebook, “On the Continent—The Entertaining Travel Annual.” This publication marked the birth of Fodor’s as a brand and laid the foundation for what would become a trusted source of travel information.

Over the years, Fodor’s continued to grow and expand its reach in the travel guide market. In 1949, the first Fodor’s guidebook specifically dedicated to Europe was published, offering travelers a comprehensive resource for exploring the continent. This milestone publication showcased Fodor’s commitment to providing detailed and up-to-date information, a characteristic that would become synonymous with the brand.

As Fodor’s reputation as a reliable travel guide publisher grew, so did its range of offerings. In the 1960s, Fodor’s introduced regional guides, allowing travelers to delve deeper into specific destinations. These regional guides became immensely popular, as they catered to the evolving needs of travelers who sought in-depth information about particular areas.

One of the key factors behind Fodor’s success is the influence of Eugene Fodor himself. Eugene Fodor, with his extensive travel experiences and a genuine passion for exploration, infused his guidebooks with a unique perspective and attention to detail. His personal touch and dedication to providing accurate and insightful information set Fodor’s apart from other travel guide publishers.

Today, Fodor’s continues to be a leading authority in the travel guide industry, with an extensive collection of guidebooks covering destinations worldwide. The brand’s commitment to offering comprehensive and detailed information remains at the core of its success, and travelers continue to rely on Fodor’s guides for their travel planning needs.

C. Criticisms and Limitations of Fodor’s Guides

Fodor’s, a well-known travel guide publisher , has gained its fair share of criticisms and limitations over the years. While their guides offer comprehensive information on various destinations, they do have some drawbacks that should be considered before relying solely on their recommendations.

1. Less focus on budget-friendly options

One of the main criticisms lodged against Fodor’s guides is their tendency to overlook budget-friendly options. While their guides do provide detailed information on high-end hotels, fine dining establishments, and luxury experiences, they often neglect to highlight more affordable alternatives. This can be a disadvantage for travelers on a tight budget or those seeking more economical options.

2. Some readers find the level of detail overwhelming

Fodor’s guides are renowned for their extensive level of detail. While this can be seen as a positive aspect for some travelers who appreciate thorough information, others may find it overwhelming. The abundance of details can make it difficult for readers to quickly locate the specific information they are looking for. It may also contribute to a sense of information overload, particularly for those who prefer a more concise and streamlined guide.

3. Inconsistencies in quality across different editions

Another limitation of Fodor’s guides is the inconsistency in quality across different editions. While some editions may provide accurate and up-to-date information, others may contain outdated or inaccurate details. This can be frustrating for travelers who rely on the guides as a trusted source of information. It is important for readers to keep in mind that Fodor’s guides are regularly updated, and it is advisable to check the publication date of the edition being used to ensure the information is current.

Overall, while Fodor’s guides offer a wealth of information and are well-regarded by many travelers, they do have some criticisms and limitations. Travelers should carefully consider their specific needs and preferences before deciding whether Fodor’s guides are the right fit for their travel planning.

B. Content Coverage and Depth

When it comes to evaluating the content coverage and depth of Frommer’s and Fodor’s travel guides , it is essential to consider the breadth of destination coverage and the level of detail provided on various aspects of travel. Both guides have their unique strengths and weaknesses in this regard, which can significantly impact the overall travel experience for readers.

Evaluating the breadth of destination coverage

Frommer’s and Fodor’s travel guides have extensive destination coverage, encompassing a wide range of countries, cities, and regions across the globe. However, there are notable differences in the extent to which each guide covers certain destinations.

Frommer’s tends to focus on popular tourist destinations, such as major cities and well-known attractions. Their guides often provide in-depth coverage of these areas, offering detailed insights into the best hotels, restaurants, and activities available.

On the other hand, Fodor’s takes a more comprehensive approach, offering coverage of both popular and off-the-beaten-path destinations. Their guides often include lesser-known cities and regions, allowing travelers to explore hidden gems and experience a more authentic travel experience.

Analyzing the level of detail provided

Frommer’s travel guides tend to offer a wealth of detailed information, providing readers with comprehensive insights into a wide range of topics. They typically cover everything from transportation options, accommodation recommendations, dining suggestions, and popular attractions. This level of detail can be particularly useful for first-time travelers or those looking for extensive guidance.

D. Currency and Timeliness of Information

When it comes to choosing a travel guide, one important factor to consider is the currency and timeliness of the information provided. After all, what good is a guidebook if the information is outdated or no longer accurate? In this section, we will delve into the comparative analysis of Frommer’s and Fodor’s in terms of currency and timeliness.

Assessing the frequency of updates in both guidebooks

Frommer’s and Fodor’s have different approaches when it comes to updating their guidebooks. Frommer’s is known for its regular updates, with new editions being released annually or even more frequently for popular destinations. This ensures that travelers have access to the most up-to-date information, including changes in attractions, hotels, restaurants, and transportation options.

On the other hand, Fodor’s updates its guidebooks on a less frequent basis. While they do release new editions, the time between updates can be longer compared to Frommer’s. This may result in some information becoming outdated, especially in fast-changing destinations where new attractions and establishments constantly emerge.

Considering the relevance of information in an ever-changing travel landscape

In today’s fast-paced world, the travel landscape is constantly evolving. New attractions open, old ones close, and trends shift. Therefore, it is crucial for a travel guide to provide relevant information that reflects the current reality of a destination.

Frommer’s has been praised for its attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring that the information provided is as current as possible. They strive to include the latest information on attractions, hotels, restaurants, and other important aspects of travel. This dedication to currency ensures that travelers can rely on Frommer’s to guide them through their journey.

While Fodor’s also aims to provide accurate information, the less frequent updates may result in some outdated content. However, it’s worth noting that Fodor’s does offer online resources, including their website and mobile apps, which can provide more real-time updates and supplement the information found in their guidebooks.

In conclusion, when it comes to currency and timeliness of information, Frommer’s has the edge with their regular updates and focus on accuracy. However, Fodor’s offers additional online resources that can help bridge the gap between guidebook editions and provide more up-to-date information. Travelers must consider their own preferences and the specific needs of their trip when deciding which guidebook is best suited for their journey.

V. The Verdict: Which Guidebook Takes the Crown?

After examining the various aspects of Frommer’s and Fodor’s travel guides , it is evident that both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the decision of which guidebook reigns supreme depends on individual travel preferences and priorities.

1. Frommer’s Strengths: – Detailed and comprehensive information: Frommer’s provides in-depth insights into destinations, offering a wealth of historical and cultural context. – Budget-friendly recommendations: Frommer’s is known for its focus on affordable travel options, making it ideal for budget-conscious travelers. – User-friendly format: Frommer’s guides are often praised for their easy-to-navigate layout, making it simple to find relevant information quickly.

2. Frommer’s Weaknesses: – Limited coverage: While Frommer’s provides detailed information on popular tourist destinations, it may lack adequate coverage for off-the-beaten-path or lesser-known locations. – Lack of personalization: Some travelers find Frommer’s guides to be too standardized, lacking the personal touch and unique recommendations that can enhance the travel experience.

3. Fodor’s Strengths: – Extensive coverage: Fodor’s offers comprehensive coverage of a wide range of destinations, including both popular and lesser-known locations. – Insider tips and recommendations: Fodor’s guides often include insider tips and recommendations from local experts, providing travelers with a more authentic experience. – Engaging writing style: Fodor’s guides are known for their engaging and entertaining writing style, making them enjoyable to read.

4. Fodor’s Weaknesses: – Less emphasis on budget travel: Fodor’s tends to focus more on luxury and upscale travel options, so it may not be the best choice for budget-conscious travelers. – Overwhelming amount of information: Some readers find Fodor’s guides to be overwhelming due to the sheer volume of information provided, making it difficult to sift through and find what they need.

It is important to note that relying solely on one guidebook may limit the breadth and depth of information available for trip planning. To ensure a comprehensive and well-rounded travel experience, it is recommended to use multiple sources, including online resources, local recommendations, and firsthand accounts from other travelers. By combining the strengths of Frommer’s and Fodor’s with other sources, travelers can create a customized and unforgettable journey.

VI. Navigating the Digital Age: Beyond Frommer’s and Fodor’s

In today’s digital age, travelers have access to a vast array of resources and platforms when it comes to planning their trips. While Frommer’s and Fodor’s have long been considered the go-to travel guides, there are now alternative options that offer unique benefits and a more personalized approach to trip planning. Let’s explore these alternatives and see how they compare to the traditional travel guides.

Exploring alternative travel resources and platforms

Online travel communities : Platforms such as TripAdvisor, Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree, and Reddit’s travel subreddits have gained popularity among travelers seeking firsthand experiences and recommendations from fellow globetrotters. These communities serve as a valuable resource for finding hidden gems, insider tips, and up-to-date information on destinations around the world.

Travel blogs and vlogs : With the rise of digital influencers, travel blogs and vlogs have become increasingly influential in shaping people’s travel choices. Bloggers and vloggers share their personal experiences, itineraries, and recommendations, often catering to specific niches or travel styles. These platforms offer a more relatable and authentic perspective, making them a favorite among millennials and Gen Z travelers.

Highlighting the benefits of online travel communities and user-generated content

Real-time information : Online travel communities provide travelers with the most current information about destinations, accommodations, attractions, and local events. As users share their experiences in real-time, fellow travelers can benefit from up-to-date recommendations and avoid outdated or inaccurate information found in traditional guidebooks.

Diverse opinions : Unlike traditional travel guides that are authored by a limited number of experts, online communities offer a diverse range of opinions and perspectives. Travelers can read reviews, ask questions, and engage in discussions with a wide range of people, allowing them to make more informed decisions based on various viewpoints.

Embracing a personalized and multifaceted approach to trip planning

Tailored recommendations : Online travel resources allow travelers to customize their itineraries based on their specific interests and preferences. Instead of relying on a generic guidebook, individuals can seek recommendations from like-minded travelers or search for specialized blogs and vlogs that cater to their specific interests, such as adventure travel, food tourism, or budget-friendly options.

Multimedia content : Unlike traditional guidebooks that primarily rely on text and static images, online platforms offer a wealth of multimedia content. Travelers can watch videos, view photos, and even listen to podcasts that provide a more immersive and engaging experience. This visual and auditory content helps travelers get a better sense of a destination and makes trip planning more interactive and enjoyable.

In conclusion, while Frommer’s and Fodor’s have long been trusted travel guides, the digital age has opened up a world of alternative resources and platforms. Online travel communities, travel blogs, and vlogs offer real-time information, diverse opinions, tailored recommendations, and multimedia content, making them valuable tools for today’s travelers. As technology continues to evolve, it is essential for travelers to embrace these alternatives and take advantage of the personalized and multifaceted approach they offer.
