One third to the concert I was on the brink of an anxiety attack. Half way through, I had to leave prematurely. Too much bad ambient&drone long streched sequences, not enough hypnoticism to get into it, but also lack of inventive disparateness of music ala Captain Beefheart to enjoy it. The result: post traumatic stress, had to drink two beers to calm myself down. I should have gone shitfaced like the last year, when I really had a blast.

I went to see The Swans at Berghain Panorama bar on my own as I was in Berlin on my own after Brexiting myself from the UK perhaps a little early with a few negative issues in tow. I found myself completely transfixed from the very start and for the entire duration of the two hour set as I was submerged under a collapsing wall of sound that the band relentlessly grinded out and pushed forward over the audience. The experience fell over you like it was scraping something from you, something you didn’t need. I felt shaken loose by it all and things sort of just fell away. It was so strong that I’m guessing this was the intention and that a lot of the audience were experiencing the same thing, and yet for all the sonic rubble that catapulted outward from each speaker that had an inverted microphone dangling in front of it like a black tulip on a long limp stem, Gira at the same time managed to build everything up. It all had a flow and function to it. Near the end his arms stretched outwards and shook like a shaman accessing some natural power while his hands fluttered behind him like he was conducting the very molecules in the air. It was an outstanding and remarkably stunning performance from all the band members. I just thought ‘thank you’ when I was on my way out.
By far the loudest concert I've been to. My ears were ringing afterwards. It was physically painful to an extent -
you actually felt the sound hit you. There was an element of masochism to it: 'Yes, hurt me with the sound; I don't care.'
Gira was conducting some mass ritual. He was like a conductor on stage waving his arms about to the other band members, wielding the sound like a weapon. Really quite hypnotic too. It was masterful how they manipulated tension, repetition and catharsis.

About Swans
Swans have announced their 16th (!) studio album, The Beggar , out June 23rd via Young God Records. They’ve also mapped a slew of new tour dates across the UK and North America (grab tickets here ), and shared the first preview, “Paradise Is Mine.”
The Beggar was written and produced by Swans mastermind Michael Gira, with contributions from recent and former members of the band and Gira’s other group Angels of Light. Ben Frost also played on the album, which also features backing vocals from Jennifer Gira, Lucy Kruger, and Laura Carbone. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“After numerous pandemic-induced cancellations of tours for the previous Swans album leaving meaning, and an apparent bottomless pit of waiting, waiting, waiting, and the strange disorientation that came with this sudden but interminable forced isolation I decided it was time to write songs for a new Swans album and forget about everything else,” Gira said in a statement. “They came relatively easily, always informed by the suspicion that these could be my last.”
He continued, “When I finally was able to travel, songs in hand, to Berlin to work with my friends recording this record, the feeling was akin to the moment in The Wizard of Oz when the film changes from Black and White to Color. Now I’m feeling quite optimistic. My favourite color is pink. I hope you enjoy the album.”
“Paradise Is Mine” is a nine-minute experimental rock epic featuring droning vocals from Gira as he ponders our very existence. “To create a new world,” he sings. “In the gash, in the break/ In this place, you animate.”
Swans have extended their tour with a new run of dates in the UK and North America beginning in August. Along the way, they’ll hit cities like London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and Brooklyn. See the full schedule below.
Tickets for the newly announced dates go on sale Friday, March 24th at 9:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Once tickets are on sale, you can look for deals at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

During the Swans hiatus (1999 – 2010), he released several albums by and toured with a group called Angels of Light. Gira recently published a book of his short stories, journals, and words for music, called The Knot . He lives in New Mexico.
Kristof Hahn – Lap steel, various guitars, vocals. Kristof first joined Swans in 1989 and was a principal contributor to Angels of Light, and a core Swans member 2010 – 2017. Kristof's other musical ventures have included the Rock ‘n' Roll Noir band Les Hommes Sauvages and Kool Kings (with Alex Chilton). When not making music Kristof translates books. He lives in Berlin, Germany.
Larry Mullins - Drums, vibes, orchestral percussion, Mellotron, various keyboards, backing vocals. Larry is a trained symphonic percussionist. He played through the ‘90s with Iggy Pop and later with The Stooges. He played with Swans in the late ‘90s and was a main contributor to Angels of Light. His current main job is playing drums with The Bad Seeds. Larry lives in Berlin, Germany.
Dana Schechter – Bass guitar, lap steel, keyboards, vocals, piano. Dana played bass in and was a core member of Angels of Light. She subsequently released music and toured as Bee and Flower. Her current band is the power-duo, Insect Ark. Dana is an animator and designer in the film industry and currently lives in Berlin, Germany.
Christopher Pravdica - Bass guitar, sounds, keyboards, vocals. Chris played bass as a core Swans member in 2010 – 2017. Chris has played with the bands, The Gunga Din, Flux Information Sciences, Xiu Xiu, Yonatan Gat, Medicine Singers and has a project of his own called We Owe. Chris is a sound designer and lives in Brooklyn, NY.
Phil Puleo – Drums, percussion, vocals, piano, exotic wind instruments. Phil played drums with Swans in the late ‘90s and was a core member in Swans 2010 – 2017 and contributed to Angels of Light. Phil's early NYC musical venture was Cop Shoot Cop and has since played with Human Impact, among others. Phil is an extremely talented illustrator and lives in Chicago, IL.
Ben Frost - Guitar, synthesizers, sound manipulations. In his own work, Ben's adventurous sound-craftings are sometimes harrowing and sometimes delicate and quite musical. His numerous albums and his powerful live shows have afforded him much recognition. He is also an accomplished composer and arranger of music for film and television. Ben lives in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Backing vocals are provided by Jennifer Gira, Lucy Kruger and Laura Carbone.
Michael Gira founded the groundbreaking NYC band Swans in 1982. Initially notorious for their relentless, brutal, high-volume onslaughts of sound, the extreme, abject imagery of Gira's lyrics and his thundering vocals, Swans would undergo a series of startling transformation over the next 15 years.
Following the punishing Filth and Cop albums, the ensemble would venture into harshly mechanical proto-industrial rock of their Greed period, then both haunted atmospheric idylls and martial stomps on 1987's landmark Children of God double album.
They'd conjure gentler acoustic-based meditations on The Burning World (1989), then after relocating to Atlanta grand, melody-dense sonic whirlwinds of the White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991) and Love of Life (1993) era, becoming more dissonant and sharp-edged with The Great Annihilator (1994).
Finally, the ultimate statement of that epoch of Swans, Soundtracks For The Blind (1996), incorporated all of these elements across well over two hours of music. At this point, Gira called it quits after 15 years of non-stop recording and touring, disbanding the group. For the next 13 years, he'd make a long series of acclaimed albums and perform live extensively with a revolving roster of musicians under the name Angels Of Light.
Gira also discovered, produced and released albums by other musicians through his label Young God Records. He cultivated such talents as Devendra Banhart and Akron/Family among others, the original figures of the late 00's Avant-folk movement.
In 2010, he reactivated Swans, releasing the studio album My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky to ecstatic critical response and touring the world for the better part of a year. The Seer, a triple album studio set, came out in 2012 and was celebrated by another lengthy world tour eliciting more media praise and album sales that landed The Seer on Billboard's Top 200. Swans' next release, To Be Kind (another triple vinyl) debuted at #36 on Billboard's Top 200 Sales Chart and #5 on their Independent Sales Chart.
The group sold out 47 concert dates in their subsequent touring including selling out two-night stands in cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Paris, as well as single shows in London, Berlin and Rome.
The album garnered enormous praise from the press, and the two-hour long album stream was premiered by NPR. The Glowing Man (2017) (also triple vinyl) was the last studio release by this incarnation of Swans. With 2019's Leaving Meaning, the 15th studio album, Gira returned to working with a fluid supporting cast of musicians once again.

Kristof Hahn is an experimental, avant-rock’n’roll guitar player. He lives and works in Berlin. Hahn’s music ranges from abstract cinematic soundscapes to elegant rock’n’roll noir songs.
Hahn is best known for his lap-steel guitar playing in the New York experimental rock band Swans . He joined the band in 1989 for the Burning World tour and played on the subsequent album “White Light from the Mouth of Infinity” (1990). He left the band in 1992, joined SWANS’ bandleader Michael Gira’s follow-up project Angels of Light in 1998 and became a constant member of the SWANS relaunch from 2010 until 2017.
Hahn is also the founder of the Berlin based bands Les Hommes Sauvages and Sultans of Gedankebrain and has collaborated with a variety of artists from different backgrounds such as Alex Chilton, Tav Falco, Thomas Wydler, and Pere Ubu. His approach to the lap-steel guitar is less rooted in traditions but more drone-oriented, creating vast soundscapes that at times erupt into sonic thunderstorms and at other times resolve into ethereal melodies.
Besides his band activities Hahn has recorded movie soundtracks for German director Robert Schwentke (Eierdiebe/The Family Jewels – 2003) and Austrian film-maker Marko Doringer (Mein Halbes...
Besides his band activities Hahn has recorded movie soundtracks for German director Robert Schwentke (Eierdiebe/The Family Jewels – 2003) and Austrian film-maker Marko Doringer (Mein Halbes Leben – 2008, Naegel mit Köpfen – 2013). He also translates books from English to German – among these are: “The Song of the Silent Snow” by Hubert Selby Jr., “Margrave of the Marshes”, by John Peel, and “Thy Neighbor’s Wife” by Gay Talese.

Swans: The Beggar review – dark and unsettling, purifying and beautiful
(Mute/Young God) Written during lockdown, the band’s 16th album is full of claustrophobic unease as Michael Gira contemplates life, mortality and the end of existence
I n the 80s and early 90s, when Swans were routinely described as “the loudest experimental band in the world”, their pulverising shows would see audiences vomiting or heading for the exits. Michael Gira and cohorts have ploughed a quieter furrow since “reactivating” in 2010. However, their 16th album shows that the old intensity hasn’t deserted them, it just comes in different forms, as suggested by opener The Parasite, which builds from a gentle acoustic guitar to a cacophony of quiet noise.
Written in what Gira calls the “strange disorientation” of lockdown, the prevailing atmosphere on The Beggar is one of unsettling, claustrophobic unease, as the drawling 69-year-old contemplates life and mortality. “Am I ready to die?” he asks on the naggingly hypnotic Paradise is Mine, reversing the question for the ominous title track to wonder: “When will I finally learn to live?”
The Velvet Underground-worthy Los Angeles: City of Death is the closest this Swans incarnation comes to rock and unusually for a band of this vintage, they’re still springing surprises, such as the way Michael Is Done suddenly erupts into beatific rapture reminiscent of early Brian Eno. Unforming has shades of Spiritualized at their prettiest. The 44 minutes of brooding menace that make up The Beggar Lover (Three) aren’t for the faint hearted, but the sublime, choral No More of This – in which Gira ponders the end of existence – shows that dark and unsettling can be purifying and beautiful.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
- Every day each car in Moscow metro passes more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
