Taking the Gibraltar Free Walking Tour guided by Francis was an absolute delight!

Born and bred in Gibraltar, Francis is a fountain of knowledge about his hometown. He took us on a journey through time, exploring the Neanderthal era to the present day.

He shared fun and engaging stories about the Moorish, Spanish, and British periods and the role Gibraltar played in world war.

We walked through Casemates Square and since it was a Saturday morning, Francis timed our tour to see the Re-enactment Association March on Main Street.

The tour also took us to the stunning Cathedrals of the Holy Trinity, St. Mary the Crowned, and the ghostly Convent.

Each stop was a new chapter in Gibraltar’s rich history . This free walking tour was a memorable journey that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Don’t forget to tip your guide! We have all the details on Gibraltar’s currency here .

Francis was very informative and knowledgable. He was keen to answer any questions. It was obvious that he was very patriotic and loved his country and its history and enjoyed passing the information on to you. The walk was not too strenuous and mostly on flat ground, with plenty of stops to explain things. Found out loads of stuff about places we had just walked past in the days before. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Diane (See more reviews)

With tastings and education on offer, both gin experts and newbies would find something to their liking. This unique experience offered a peek into the world of gin that was both enjoyable and enlightening.

Fantastic gin tasting, best I have ever done. The hour was rammed full of the history of gin coupled with examples of gin to demonstrate the historical facts. It really was very good and a brilliant start to an evening out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Laura (See more reviews)

Gibraltar Yacht Experience

Sailing on a private yacht is by far one of the best Gibraltar tours.

Imagine a day spent sailing on the pristine waters around Gibraltar aboard the “Starlet of Dover.” This full-day yacht charter is nothing short of fantastic.

After a safety brief, the crew will hoist the sails, kill the engine, and glide effortlessly through the water, powered solely by the wind.

You can kick back and relax , or even get hands-on with the sailing under the guidance of the experienced crew! Keep an eye out for dolphins – they put on a lovely show!

You will be able to dive into the crystal-clear water to swim, snorkel, or stand-up paddle boarding, all before enjoying a delicious lunch and light refreshments onboard.

This private cruise , great for families, wraps up at Queensway Quay marina , perfect for a cocktail or two. An unforgettable day!

TOURS OF GIBRALTAR

Departure point, our gibraltar standard tour gives visitors a fantastic round-up of the best gibraltar tourist attractions..

It starts at the Pillar of Hercules, from where it will be possible to see the magnificent Straits of Gibraltar. So-called because the Greeks and Romans believed Hercules held up the heavens with the Rock of Gibraltar and Jebel Musa, it is located at the entrance to the Gibraltar nature reserve.

From there your Gibraltar private tour will take you to St. Michael’s Cave, a unique natural formation used for entertainment purposes over the centuries. Full of impressive stalactites and stalagmites but with easy access, it is one of the highlights of Tours in Gibraltar.

Complete the ascent to the Top of the Rock for your next stop. Here you will be able to go on a Skywalk if you dare before seeing the monkeys. The Barbary macaques, that are normally quite friendly unless cornered, are the only free-ranging primates in Europe.

Finish off your Gibraltar Rock tour at the Great Siege Tunnels, one of the greatest engineering feats of the 18th Century. Built under a four-year long siege into solid limestone rock, they were designed to fire upon the enemy lines that were trying to advance on Gibraltar.

This one and a half hour trip offers the most popular Gibraltar attractions at the most economic price.

Are you coming in a cruise and want to save money on your Gibraltar tour?

St Michaels Cave

As the Rock’s top natural beauty this cave is a must-see on the Gibraltar rock tours. At a height of 300 metres above sea level it is only accessible on foot or via private tours Gibraltar caters for in a very convenient fashion. Receiving nearly a million visits a year, it is one of the jewels of our crown. It also has a local use, as the cave was converted into an auditorium in which to watch shows literally inside the Rock. Only last year Mark Steel filmed a show here and there are also numerous classical music and jazz events held in this remarkable setting. Visiting the cave in one of our Tours of Gibraltar is following the steps of prehistory. In 1974 a Neolithic bowl was found and since then a picture of an Ibex drawn around 60,000 years ago showed the cave’s usage by the earliest human beings. The Greeks, Romans and Phoenicians passed through here too as the writings of Pomponius Mela and Homer show. The idea of using the cave as a place of entertainment originated in Victorian times, where parties, concerts and duels were held inside it. It would be lit up a bit like it is now, as soldiers used the space for their own recreation on visits to the Rock. It led to exploration of the different passageways, with its usage by as a wartime hospital during air attacks. Another range of caverns that stretches far below the Rock was discovered in 1942 when troops tried to create an alternative entrance to St Michael’s Cave. is another of the long list of things to do in. Those who want a bit more excitement can arrange guided tours in Gibraltar to see the Lower St Michael’s Cave. It showcases rare geological formations and an underground lake which visitors have to walk around or can even swim in during the visit. Legend has it that St Michael’s cave is bottomless and that the famous Rock monkeys which hang around at its entrance arrived on the Rock through tunnels that cross the Straits. During Ancient Greek times, it was believed to be the Gates of Hades, giving avid explorers who never returned a possibility to enter the underworld. Nowadays it is a far less bleak prospect as the exits are clearly marked.

The Great Siege Tunnels

As you circle down from the summit on the Gibraltar Rock tours, you come to the northern side of this solitary piece of limestone. On your way in from your Gibraltar transfers you might have seen a number of square holes dotted into the North Face of the Rock. These were formed during the Great Siege which lasted from 1779 to 1783, which now form an essential part of the Gibraltar rock tours. The fact that the Great Siege Tunnels are placed in such a hidden corner of the Rock means that they are often less frequented by those on foot. With our Tours of Gibraltar you will get to see a magnificent human achievement, where the Royal Engineers managed to make headway through solid rock two and a half centuries ago. The intention was to cut off the Spanish advance as it had reached a point where cannons from Gibraltar batteries were no longer able to reach them as they were obstructed by the Rock. Work on the tunnels was slow at first as workers mainly used sledgehammers and pickaxes to gnaw at the solid limestone, loosened by dynamite. The explosions were loud and created so much smoke and dust that a vertical shaft needed to be created as an air vent. Not only that, but finding the right amount of distance from the side of the rock proved tricky in an age where there was no such thing as computers and calculations were done very much through guesswork. Eventually, work was completed for the first stretch of the Great Siege Tunnels in late 1783, although by then the siege had all but ended. At 908ft (277m) it included St. George’s Hall along with Windsor Gallery, King’s and Queen’s Lines as well as Cornwallis Chamber. Four cannons were placed in Windsor Gallery and others put at other points of the tunnel as can be seen in the Gibraltar private tours and Gibraltar semi-private tours. Curtains of ropes protected the gunners from the flashes and smoke, while a wet cloth made sure the rest of the gunpowder did not catch fire, causing a major explosion. The tunnels were expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries when they were used for defence of the Rock during peace and wartime. Nowadays they are only visited by tourists who will be treated to Gibraltar attractions composed of light and sound that make it an exciting journey through time.

The Pillars of Hercules

As you rise from the commotion of the city of Gibraltar on one of our world famous Gibraltar Rock Tours, the air thins as the buildings disappear. The town is a densely populated place but Gibraltar private tours help you get away from it all as you go uphill into the clouds. Winding your way up the narrow roads on a private Rock tour, the first of the Gibraltar attractions is the Pillars of Hercules. This view is one of the most panoramic on clear days as it is possible to see the all the northern Atlas mountains, and an isometric view of the bay. The city of Gibraltar stretches below and it is easy to identify a number of its landmarks with its harbour which proved to be a key stop-off for ships servicing the British empire. One can only imagine the cacophony of sights and sounds when huge ships anchored on the shores of the Rock to trade their wares, or the vessels of war that anchored at the Rock for rest and relaxation before fighting the Nazis and their allies all over the Mediterranean. Nowadays the bay is a far more serene sight, although on Gibraltar tours the myriad of ships waiting for orders in the bay still lends an idea to what the world was like in colonial times. You may even be able to spot sailing boats that come from the north in autumn before they take the route to the Canary Islands and then on to the Caribbean. All of this can be seen from this stop on Gibraltar private tours, standing on one of the Pillars of Hercules made famous by Greek mythology that was taken on by the Etruscans and the Romans. In this tale, Hercules was tasked with fetching the Cattle of Geryon and returning to Eurystheus with them, with the Pillars of Hercules marking the most western point in the Mediterranean worldview. Plato placed the lost city of Atlantis beyond these two pillars, the Rock of Gibraltar and Jbel Musa across the straits in modern-day Morocco. This was revived by the Renaissance as the pillars marked out that there was ‘nothing further beyond’ (Non plus ultra), warning sailors and merchants of the danger beyond. Dante Aligheri in his Inferno XXVI tells of Ulysses tells of his journey to get to know more of the unknown. In many ways this is similar to the visitors who are embarking on a voyage of discovery in the Gibraltar Rock Tours.

Top of the Rock (stopping at upper Apes Den)

Just along from O’Hara’s Battery on your Gibraltar rock tour is the upper Ape’s Den. Here you will see a large number of Barbary Macaques, the only free roaming primates in Europe and along with the Japanese Macaques. They are also the only macaques outside Asia, making them a very curious resident on top of an otherwise very serene lump of limestone rock. At first they were deemed to be apes because they have stocky bodies, no tails and spend more time on land than on trees. But in fact, they are monkeys, owing to the way they walk on all fours rather than on their knuckles and that they cannot swing from branch to branch like gibbons. As part of Gibraltar semi-private tours you will see the human ancestors eating from the food provided by natural park keepers or playing together. There always tends to be a large variety of different ages at this stage of the Gibraltar tours, making it an enjoyable experience which your driver will expertly guide you through. These playful creatures are so much like humans it is uncanny, and their evolutionary significance is notable. They are very clever and curious too, so watch your bags because they will take them off you when you least expect it, especially if they can smell food. How they arrived on the Rock is a mystery but it is most probable they were brought over by merchants who arrived here from their native Altas and Rif mountains in Morocco. In their packs, macaques are matriarchal, with the males helping out to bring the young. Members of a pack, that can number from ten to 100, share the parenting process, with males mating with each other within the social grouping as opposed to keeping one partner throughout their life. That might explain a few things in human beings! Unfortunately, Barbary macaques are currently an endangered species in Morocco and Algeria, with their habitat threatened by logging and extermination. Numbers continue to fall, although in Gibraltar they have continued to thrive in stable conditions, to the point that occasionally some are transported abroad. Just below beside is the SkyWalk, officially opened by the Luke Skywalker himself. Walk off the edge of the cliff with nothing but a transparent sheet of reinforced glass. Although not for the faint-hearted, this is truly a thrilling experience!

What our customers say

Excellent tour and informative for all ages .

7 of us booked a standard tour with Tours of Gibraltar and we had Luigi as our tour guide. He was brilliant - very informative and his knowledge of Gibraltar was really interesting and excellent. There was no rushing us and we had plenty of time at the different areas. We had 3 children with us between 5-7 years they also had a great time and the highlight was seeing the monkeys and Luigi interacting with them. Would highly recommend this company again. We booked via phone the night before and Luigi was there to greet us at the boarder before our time as we had arrived early.

Holiday tour of the Rock.

Having been t Gibraltar twice before we knew that it can be a busy place and can be queues to the main attractions, so this time we decided to look at the private taxi option with Tours of Gibratar. I sent an email while we were in our villa on the Saturday evening enquiring about availability for the Monday (I admit I thought I was pushing it!) but within an hour had a reply back from Michelle confirming they had spaces and was booked for the Monday. We booked the Standard tour that included all the main sites, entrance, tour guide and transport. Our guide was Luigi a local to the Rock and was a fantastic host, with great passion for his country and a wealth of local insights and facts. While the tour was meant to be 90 mins it was more than 2hrs and Luigi could not have done enough for us. Fantastic trip, and made so convenient for us. Thank you so much the whole family had a great experience and would recommend to all our friends.

Very Informative!

It's great to get a tour and views from someone who obviously loves their country. Informative. Managed the time at each place without feeling rushed. Then waited at our apartment to take us to the airport. Thoroughly recommended.

timothyandrewbrown

They replied to our emails very quickly with good prices and proposals. Michelle was very helpful over email, giving us all the information we needed. We booked the tour with them and Luigi collected us at the foot border, they supplied us with two car seats and also stopped at the airport so we could collect a member of our group who was arriving by plane. The van was comfortable, spacious and air conditioned. The tour was very good and a must if you're visiting Gibraltar, as it's practically impossible to visit everything on foot or with just the Teleférico. Luigi bought our tickets to enter the sites and Luigialso supplied water. He explained everything to us about the sites, the Gib traditions and it was very interesting. He was very patient with us, we were travelling with seven children, which meant we were much slower at getting around, but he didn't rush us at all, and the tour which was supposed to be two hours actually was much longer. He also dropped us off at the place of our choice after the tour whereas other companies we spoke to didn't offer this service and would just leave us at the last tourism spot meaning we would have to walk back down from there. Very recommendable. Thank you Michelle and Luigi

Carmen Finaldi

I highly recommend booking with these folks.

This tour was exactly what we were looking for. The tour operator was very flexible and accommodating. Our tour guide, Luigi, was waiting for us at our designated spot. The car was spacious and comfortable. He gave us great personal insights and back stories. Although our time was somewhat limited, he took us to all the must see places. He knows a great deal and really made our day enjoyable. I've been on more tours than I can count but this one was quite memorable. If you are visiting Gibraltar I highly recommend booking with these folks.

Great hosting

Our about 2 hours guide Luigi made this small group of seniors have the best experience of Gibraltar, giving us local details, the city history background and its people, economics and religious informations, since the beginning of the pick-up at the frontier, throught out. We loved the 5 stop tour arround the rock landmarks, specially St. Michaels Cave and seeing up close the mountain Apes! The tour ends near the downtown shopping street where we could enjoy a good lunch and walk up to the Tourism Office to get more written informations of the city. Thank you so much and wish you all the best :)

Gibraltar Tour   This tour was amazing. Out guide was so knowledgeable, friendly and catered to the needs of our young family, including up close time with the monkeys. Would highly recommend!

I’ve recently returned home to Australia after undertaking the above tour with Trafalgar. On reflection, and given the length of the tour, I am very happy to say that I have very positive memories of it. This tour covered a lot of ground, but we were in a very comfortable coach. As there were 24 clients in a 48 seater coach, we were able to spread out and weren’t at all cramped. In spite of the outside temperature nudging 40 C at times, the interior of the coach was always comfortable. An unexpected bonus was the wi-fi on the coach. Often the hotel rooms did not have a reliable reception, so one would wait until on the coach to transact business via wi-fi. The hotels themselves were well located and close to the activities of the area. All were of a satisfactory standard. The destinations were always interesting. The whole trip was brought to life by our Tour Director – Meagan Chandler. She had a very good knowledge of the areas we travelled through, and imparted her knowledge with very clear diction. Meagan is very personable, and was cool calm and collected throughout the tour. There were some “testing” moments that Meagan had to negotiate, but she did so with great aplomb. My comments to friends and family was that the trip was fantastic, and I’m strongly considering learning Spanish to prepare myself for a return visit!

What people love about gibraltar tours.

I really loved our tour guide Ana Rita Lima. She helped us through a couple rough patches and I appreciate that. Very energetic and delightful!! I loved every bit of the tour except the hotel quality on the first night of the tour. It needed a vending machine that worked and more opportunity to get snacks upon arrival. It was just very basic. Also the hotel in ( I can't remember which city) we didn't have air conditioning. Our tour guide told us of where to be cautious (pick pockets) and some things we should be aware of. I appreciate that they stopped regularly for food and bathrooms breaks. Our driver, Rui, ( proved to have great skill, navigating in traffic, fog, rain and parking!! Overall, a great tour, with important history and valuable information!! With the exception of two poor quality hotels it was a memory that will last a life time. By the way, the Best Western in Barcelona is much better than the one we stayed in on the tour.
Our guide Grant was truly exceptional . His knowledge and calm manner really enhanced our trip. Nothing was too much trouble (also impressed that he had walked the Camino and had run with the bulls in Pamplona and was able to bring personal experience to these moments). The trip was informative an we saw more than we could ever have seen on our own , but the highlights were the days we had more than one night stay and had more time on our own . The bus had wifi which was great. The special moments included - Cordoba Cathedral, The Alhambra, The aqueduct in Segovia, The free time in the Costa del Sol, The opera singing waiters in Madrid, Bilbao, Seville ...too many to recommend. I would have liked a bit more time in Barcelona and sometimes the included and optional dinners were ordinary. I was very impressed that beers & wine were included with most meals.
Overall good highlights package but some glaring omissions. Too many cathedrals at the expense of equally compelling alternatives in all cities. Optional excursions generally worthwhile but those with meals not worth the price. Most meals were good but not memorable.

How to Spend the Perfect One Day in Gibraltar Itinerary & Guide

Gibraltar is a tiny speck of a nation in the very south of mainland Spain that is actually a British Overseas Territory. The northern edge of Gibraltar shares its border with Spain and is situated at the very tip of the Iberian peninsula. Here’s your ultimate guide to the perfect one day in Gibraltar itinerary .

At just 6.7 km 2  in size, Gibraltar is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, often referred to as simply ‘The Rock’ and is a must-see while in southern Europe.

When wandering around Gibraltar, you’ll soon discover that the little country feels akin to wandering around any town in the UK, with red post boxes, telephone boxes, and typical British high street chains to be found in abundance.

one day in gibraltar

Is one day enough time to visit Gibraltar?

What is gibraltar known for, get to gibraltar, get the cable car to the top of the rock, the skywalk, upper rock nature reserve, st michael’s cave, mediterranean steps, walk around the city centre, moorish castle, gibraltar botanic gardens, europa point, jews gate cemetery, where to stay in gibraltar.

If you’re pressed for time, then 1 day is enough to see all of the major attractions that this tiny country has to offer. Thanks to its small and compact nature, almost all of the main sites are located close to one another and so can easily be enjoyed in a short time frame. Ideally, the perfect time to explore Gibraltar would be over the course of two to three days.

visit gibraltar

Gibraltar is most famous for ‘the Rock’ an impressive natural rock jutting out from the earth that has since en turned into a nature reserve. Gibraltar’s military history is pretty famous, as is its Moorish architecture. Gibraltar is the only place in Europe which is home to wild apes. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory, meaning that its citizens are British passport holders.

Suggested one day in Gibraltar itinerary

If you’re not staying in Gibraltar itself then you’ll have to start your day by walking from Spain into Gibraltar (be sure to bring your passport). One of the more unique experiences en route is that you’ll have to walk across the air strip, as this marks the border between Spain and Gibraltar.

Those who are crossing into the nation from nearby towns in Spain on foot, by car, or by bus will have to walk across this air strip and may well have to wait for a plane to land to be able to cross over!

We don’t recommend taking a car as queues can be as long as several hours in order to cross into Gibraltar. Instead, opt to walk! Gibraltar can also be visited as a day trip from several cities, including Seville . If you prefer all of the travel details to be taken care of for you, then you can book a guided tour from Seville to Gibraltar like this one.

Gibraltar airport runway

Truth be told, one of the best things to do in Gibraltar is to catch a cable car to the top of The Rock. Tickets can be purchased online. When it comes to buying the ticket, you’ll want to select a return ticket that includes the Nature Reserve (i.e. an all inclusive ticket).

The journey to the top takes six minutes. Arrive earlier in the day to beat the crowds. From the summit (known as Top Station), you can enjoy beautiful views of the port below so be sure to bring your camera along.

On a clear day, you can see across the Strait of Gibraltar all the way to Morocco in northern Africa. It’s also possible to see Spain’s Costa del Sol and an amazing view of the Rock of Gibraltar itself.

cable car gibraltar

Though not the best activity for those with a fear of heights, one of the best things to do in Gibraltar is to take The Skywalk, which is located just a short walk away from Apes Den. The glass walkway has a see-through base and offers 360º views 340 metres directly above sea level.

The walkway is actually higher up than the tallest point of London’s The Shard and is constructed atop of a former WWII base structure! From the end, visitors can see three countries spanning two continents, making this one Gibraltar attraction that shouldn’t be missed!

skywalk gibraltar

After admiring the view, it’s time to head into the Nature Reserve. If you’ve bought the all inclusive cable car ticket, then this will include the price of entrance into the Reserve. The best gem of heading into the Nature Reserve is heading into the Ape’s Den to see all of the monkeys!

Gibraltar is home to the only wild apes in Europe and they can be seen at the cable car mid station. The tailless monkeys are the Barbary Macaque (scientifically known as Macaca Sylvanus) and no one quite knows how they ended up on Gibraltar.

When walking through the park, you’ll also come across a number of abandoned military fortifications. In the centuries gone by, Gibraltar was heavily fortified and today vestiges of the past can be found across every turn in the form of guard stations and old lookouts.

One particular highlight is O’Hara’s Battery (close to the Mediterranean Steps). This former artillery battery is perched atop the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar and the steep climb up is more than worth the beautiful view from the top. There are also old tunnels and WWII rooms to explore dating from between 1899 to 1976.

monkeys gibraltar

One of the greatest highlights of the Nature Reserve is St Michael’s Cave, which is one of the top things to do on the island that doesn’t involve military history. The natural cave is one of many which are located in the island but is the one that has been used by humans for thousands of years.

According to local legend, St Michael’s Cave is one of the Pillars of Hercules and may even be the entrance to The Underworld. In reality, you can enjoy incredible light and sound shows and the ticket price is included with the all-inclusive Nature Reserve tickets. There are snacks and drinks for sale at the cave, as well as free Wi-Fi.

St Michael's Cave

If you feel like walking even more, then before leaving the Nature Reserve, be sure to head to the Mediterranean Steps. These steps were constructed by the British military and now offer visitors one of the most breathtaking views to be found anywhere in Gibraltar.

Mediterranean Steps

After spending a long morning wandering around the Nature Reserve, head back down The Rock to reach the town centre. If you’re looking for a little whimsical and cottagecore aesthetic, then the old town of Gibraltar is the place to stroll around.

Casemates Square is one of the most important sites in the city centre as it is the largest square and is named for the early 19th-century British-built Grand Casemates. Other highlights of the city centre include the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Crowned, the Governor’s Residence, and the Royal Gibraltar Post Office.

gibraltar city centre

Perched just above the town centre, the Moorish Castle dates back to the Moorish occupation of the city during the 8th-century, though only a fraction of the ancient fortification has survived to this day. The two main highlights are Tower of Homage and the Gate House, as well as the beautiful view over the city.

moorish castle

As you might expect from somewhere with a warm climate, the botanical gardens of Gibraltar are simply breathtaking and are well worth a visit, even if you only have 1 day in Gibraltar. The subtropical gardens were created in 1816 and cover an area of around 6 hectares. The gardens are free to visit and are open every day from 8 AM to sunset.

botanic garden

End your one day in Gibraltar by heading to Europa Point, which is the most southerly tip of Gibraltar. This area is home to the likes of the mid-19th-century Europa Point Lighthouse, the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, and the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe.

Europa Point

If you have two or three days in Gibraltar

While you can cover much of what Gibraltar has to offer over the course of a single day, if you have more time then there are a number of attractions worth adding to your list. Here are some of our top picks:

One of the more unusual places to see in the state is the Jews Gate Cemetery, a place of interment which was used from 1746 to 1848 to bury the Jewish residents of Gibraltar. The out of the way site is known as the Windmill Hill Cemetery and comprises of the earliest known Jewish burials in Gibraltar.

cemetery gibraltar

The British Overseas Territory is fairly expensive when compared to southern Spain and so many visitors to The Rock opt to instead stay over the border in nearby Spain. Be sure to bring your passport with you when travelling across the border as you will technically be leaving the Schengen Zone and entering another country!

La Línea de la Concépcion in Spain is around a 30 minute walk to reach the Spain/ Gibraltar border and is a popular place to stay for those wishing to visit The Rock. Some of the top hotel picks in town include Ohtels Campo de Gibraltar and AC Hotel by Marriott La Linea .

If you prefer to stay in Gibraltar itself, then there is quite limited choice and so be sure to book well ahead of time in order to secure the best rates and avoid disappointment. Some of the top picks for places to stay within Gibraltar itself include Rock Hotel (luxury) and Sunborn Gibraltar (luxury).

A Day Trip to Gibraltar from Spain: How to Plan

Gibraltar View from The Rock with Flag

During our road trip through Southern Spain, we knew we had to plan a day trip to Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory that sits in the southern tip of Spain. It had always been an intriguing place to me, maybe because I’m British, but I wanted to know why this spit of land held such significance and what its story was. After visiting I can truly say there is no other place like Gibraltar and let me tell you why you should plan a day trip from Spain.

This post contains affiliate links which means I make a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you purchase a product after clicking on any of them.

Why Visit Gibraltar on a Day Trip?

If you’re looking for a unique experience and a fix of all things British, then a day trip to Gibraltar is for you. From red telephone boxes to fish and chips you’ll find a lot of classic Britishness here. There is also an abundance of tax-free shopping, nature reserves, complex cave systems and a Moorish castle to explore too.

Day Trip to Gibraltar - steps with British Flag

Gibraltar overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar, the waterway to Europe and the entrance and exit of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its most visited place is a 426-metre high limestone rock that thrusts out of the sea and takes over the landscape, aptly named ‘The Rock’. The Rock has exceptional views in all directions, and on a clear day, you can see across the Strait to Africa. It’s also the only place in Europe where wild monkeys roam free, or Barbary Macaques to be exact. It’s rich in military history and during a visit you can learn why Gibraltar remains a British Territory. Sounds like an intriguing place right?

How to Make the Trip to Gibraltar from Spain

tour a gibraltar

Day Trip Border Crossing

The closest town in Spain to Gibraltar is La Línea de la Conceptión. Originally, we had planned to drive and stay at one of the hotels in Gibraltar. But after some research, I learned queues at the border are long and hotels are expensive by comparison, so we opted to visit on foot. There is ample parking, follow all of the signs and you’re good. Alternatively, you can keep your car parked at your hotel for the day as we did. We stayed at the Ohtels Campo De Gibraltar , it’s a short walk to the border and in a great place to explore La Línea de la Conceptión too. Many visitors also travel from nearby Spanish places such as Malaga, Seville and Tarifa.

Brexit & Covid-19 Safety Measures

Crossing the border was fairly straightforward before Brexit, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU). Gibraltar left the EU in 2020 so border crossings now involve more checks, particularly around food and drinks. It also seems this is a fluid situation as the Spanish and British governments trial border crossing measures. For the most up-to-date coronavirus information check here and for border and visa entry here . Regardless of the current situation you will be crossing international borders and must remember to bring your passport.

Day Trip to Gibraltar - airport runway

One of the first things you’ll notice at the airport is that you have to cross the runway. If you’re sticking to a specific schedule, I recommend checking flight times. You don’t want to end up waiting for a flight to land before you can pass through. However, it might be something you’d like to witness as the runway is right there in front of you.

What Currency to use?

The official currency in Gibraltar is Gibraltar pounds. We simply withdrew some cash from an ATM to use throughout the day. You will be able to use Euros if you’re in a pinch, but we found the prices were a lot higher.

Sightseeing in Gibraltar – Day Trip Ideas

Day Trip to Gibraltar - Cable Car Top of the Rock

Visit the Top of The Rock by Cable Car

If there is one thing every visitor must do in Gibraltar, it’s visiting the top of the rock . There are a few options, and my favourite is to travel up there by cable car. It’s worth buying tickets in advance as lines are long. The advance option also gives you fast track entry when you arrive. But if you’re like us and not sure what timeslot you’ll need, you can buy tickets online when you get there. We showed the tickets on our phone and were sent straight through. There are a few ticket options available, we opted for the one-way. We decided we’d walk down and check out Apes Den and the nature reserve on the way back to town.

Macaque on top of the rock during a day trip to Gibraltar

Other options to reach the top are taxi, on foot, public transport or a tour bus . Remember to leave all food and drinks at the bottom as the macaques will attempt to steal these from you. There are a lot of signs up warning visitors, but unfortunately many people ignore them.

tour a gibraltar

Things to do on The Rock

Aside from admiring the beautiful views, most visitors want to see the Barbary Macaques at the top. It’s the only place in Europe where they roam free and how they arrived on the rock is still an ongoing debate. While exploring the area be aware that these animals are fearless. They’re no joke and will approach you if they think you have food. I witnessed the macaques climbing onto backpacks, fighting bags off of people and rummaging around unattended items. Will had to help a hysterical woman who couldn’t get one off of her back as it raided the contents of her pack. It’s so important to adhere to the signs and admire them from afar. They’re quite a delight to see roaming around, very playful and smart. An experience I’ll never forget.

Day Trip to Gibraltar - macaque monkey and baby

There is a restaurant and snack bar at the top. We enjoyed a drink while watching the macaques steal food from tourists and fight amongst themselves. I could have sat there for hours appreciating the views while people and macaque watching. They also sell a few souvenirs that you can purchase.

When we were ready to begin our descent, we made our way to the nature reserve . This network of walks and trails have numerous things to see and do. The route we did took us to Skywalk, O’Hara’s Battery and past St Michael’s Cave and by Ape’s Den before heading back to town. We didn’t have enough time to explore the West side of the reserve. It included many historical areas such as the siege tunnels, Moorish castle, World War II tunnels and heritage centre.

Day Trip to Gibraltar - drinks at pub

Stroll Through Main Street

Taking a walk down Main Street you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re on any other British high-street. Many of the retailers are the same with duty-free shopping being the exception. There is no tax on goods you buy in Gibraltar, hello shopping paradise. It’s also worth walking down the historical Irish Town street. Located just off and running parallel with Main Street, it’s less crowded and has a more local feel. It’s a pedestrianised area with some unique stores, historic buildings and of course more pubs.

Day Trip to Gibraltar - Main Street View

Eat Some British Food & Drinks

At the time we were living in the south of France and were craving Indian food. We found Curry and Sushi and enjoyed an amazing meal. They also offered gluten free options which is something I required. Aside from this place you’ll find multiple restaurants serving up a range of food. Fish and chips, a great British staple, is easy to come by.

Day Trip from Gibraltar to Morocco

At only 8 miles from Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar, a day trip to Africa is within reach. Although trips don’t leave from Gibraltar there are options from nearby Spanish towns. Check out my day trip to Morocco guide if you fancy making the trip.

Thanks for reading, I hope I’ve convinced you to pay Gibraltar a visit, and that this has been a useful itinerary on how to plan a day trip to Gibraltar from Spain. If you have any more places that you would recommend let me know in the comments below or find me on   Instagram .
