Mykonos In One Day – What To Do In Mykonos From A Cruise Ship

An ideal one day Mykonos itinerary for anyone with limited time on the island. I'll show you what to see in Mykonos in one day so you can plan your Mykonos cruise stop to perfection!

Things to do in one day in Mykonos

How to see Mykonos in a day

Mykonos is one of the most famous Greek islands in the Cyclades. It has amazing beaches, a lovely main town called Chora, and it is incredibly popular for its party scene.

Oh, and did you know you can take a guided tour of the UNESCO site of Delos which is the Greek island right next door?

We've written this 1 day Mykonos itinerary for people who only have limited time on the island. Typically, this is people going ashore on a Mykonos cruise stop as part of a Greek isles or Mediterranean cruise.

It's always going to be difficult giving such a fantastic destination as Mykonos the time it deserves during relatively short shore excursions. Fortunately, due to its compact nature, you can see many of the must-see highlights of Mykonos island in just a few hours.

Mykonos Shore Excursion Vs See It Yourself

Before we dive in, I'll start by saying that I personally don't find the organized tours in Mykonos to offer particularly good value for money.

That said, I also totally understand why some people prefer a private tour during their port day in Mykonos. It makes life easier, all the logistics are taken care of, and hey, you're on vacation!

With that in mind, this sightseeing tour is one of the best for visitors to Mykonos arriving on a cruise ship: Mykonos Shore Excursion with Terminal Pickup

If you're undecided on whether you want to take an organized tour of Mykonos or do it yourself , read the rest of this guide. I'll share with you the best things to do with one day in Mykonos, Greece so you get a real taste of what this picture-perfect island is all about.

(Our Mykonos travel tips and suggestions are based on our own experiences on the island. We hope you enjoy your visit as much as we did!)

Explore Mykonos Town

Whether you are spending 1 day in Mykonos or 5, you'll want to check out Mykonos Town. Also known as Chora, it is one of the most impressive main towns in the Cyclades.

If you've arrived by cruise boat, you'll find yourselves at the New Port of Mykonos (Tourlos). This is just one bus stop away from the city center, and the ride takes only a few minutes.

A church inside Mykonos Chora

Mykonos Town is full of the typical Cycladic white-washed houses and narrow winding streets. There are cute churches hidden around every corner, in addition to restaurants, cafes, bars and all types of shops.

Some people arriving in Mykonos on a cruise ship choose to wander around Mykonos Town for their whole time on the island. It's extremely picturesque, and there's lots of places to take time out and enjoy drinks or a meal.

What to see in Mykonos Town

You can comfortably explore the town on your own, but an excellent idea is take a guided walking day tour and avoid getting lost in the maze-like Chora. Although honestly, getting lost in the Chora is half the fun, as you discover a lot more that way!

As you are wandering around the Old Town, do not miss Paraportiani church, better known as Panagia Paraportiani. This strangely shaped church is actually made up of five churches.

The lower part construction, including four of the churches used to be part of the Mykonos castle, which was built here several centuries ago. The last church, which is named Panagia Paraportiani, is the one on top. The name “Paraportiani” comes from the Greek word “paraporti”, which was the side-door to the castle.

Finally, if you are interested in archaeology, visit the Archaeological Museum in Mykonos Town, where you can see many artifacts excavated on the nearby Rhineia island. More on this below.

Little Venice in Mykonos Town

Mykonos Town is also where the famous Little Venice is located. This tiny area is made up of a series of old houses, built right above the sea. It's extremely photogenic and you can never get bored of the views.

Visiting Little Venice Mykonos in September

Sit at one of the seaside bars, or wander around the small quarter and find your own favourite spot to enjoy the ambiance and take photos from.

Opposite Little Venice, you will see the iconic Mykonos windmills. While there are plenty of windmills in other Greek islands and the rest of Greece, the ones in Mykonos are among its best known landmarks.

Visiting the windmills of Mykonos on a walking tour

Historically, the windmills were once used to grind wheat and other crops. Today, they have been restored and are a favourite attraction for people visiting Mykonos.

This area is also one of the best places to visit in Mykonos Greece for the sunset. If your time on the island allows, it's worth considering. More on sunsets later!

Visit the archaeological site of Ancient Delos

The way Mykonos tours and excursions go, one of the most popular activities is a tour to the nearby Delos island. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is highly recommended if you are considering what to do in Mykonos from a cruise ship.

The small island of Delos, which is just a half hour away by boat from Mykonos itself, was extremely important in Ancient Greece. Delos is where Leto gave birth to God Apollo and his sister Artemis, and as such it was considered a sacred island.

Walking through Delos in Greece

In addition to it being one of the most important sacred places in ancient Greece, it was also an important center for trade and commerce.

It is estimated that Delos was once home to around 30,000 people, which is an incredible number for its size. In comparison, the current population of Mykonos is around than 20,000 people! Today, it is one of the most popular World Heritage Sites in Greece.

mosaic at delos in greece

This massive archaeological site would need several hours to be fully explored, and much of it hasn't been excavated yet. The most important areas, however, can be visited in about 3 or 4-hours.

You can see the remains of awesome ancient mansions, stunning mosaic floors, the Sacred Way, and the famous marble lions given to the island by the Naxians. Allow for some time in the small Delos museum, which contains several ancient artefacts.

Day Trip to Delos

Small cruise boats depart from the Old Port in Mykonos Town a few times per day, carrying visitors to Delos and back. The journey takes a little over a half-hour.

Tour of Delos in Greece

If you are visiting Mykonos on a cruise, chances are your time on the island will be limited. It's best to book a Delos tour, run by a local tour operator and including a licensed tour guide.

  • Original Morning Delos Guided Tour
  • Original Evening Delos Guided Tour
  • Delos Tour From Cruise Ship

I am very glad that I took a guided tour in Delos . Our guide explained a lot about Delos and the nearby Rhenia island. We also had discussions about the Delian league, the city-states of the time, and the Cycladic civilization in general.

In my opinion, it was the only way for this UNESCO World Heritage Site to come alive.

Cruise around Delos island and Rhenia island

If you prefer to spend longer cruising around the Aegean, it is possible to combine a tour of Delos island with a cruise to the deserted Rhenia. This is another island close to Delos where a lot of ancient ruins have been found. It is currently abandoned, but there are talks of if it becoming an archaeological park in the future.

These sailing tours allow for time to explore the archaeological site of Delos, but also time for a swim off the coast of Rhenia. The Mykonos boat trips to Delos and Rhenia start from Agios Ioannis port and transfer can be included.

  • 6 Hour Delos and Rhenia Boat Trip
  • Yacht cruise to Delos and Rhenia

Go to a beach in Mykonos

You'll have to judge for yourself if you have time to venture out and see more of the island. If you do, you'll find the famous Cycladic island is a paradise for people who like swimming. There are over 30 beautiful beaches in Mykonos. Depending on your preferences, there will be at least one that you will want to spend some time on.

Reasons to visit Mykonos include amazing coloured seas like this one

If you have been to Santorini, you will remember that most of the beaches have grey / black sand. By comparison almost all of the beaches in Mykonos are far better and have soft, powdery white sand, and crystal clear waters.

The closest beach to Mykonos town

The closest option to Mykonos Town is Megali Ammos beach. You could even walk there if you wanted. If you are planning to tour the island by car, you could stop here for a quick swim. In our experience, this beach is a great sunset spot.

Ornos beach in Mykonos

Another option not too far from Mykonos Town is Ornos Beach. The whole area is a busy resort, and Ornos sandy beach is fully organized with beach bars and cafes. There are also plenty of restaurants all around.

More Mykonos Beaches

People who are interested in beach parties will enjoy Super Paradise beach, which is a beautiful, wide stretch of sand. Unless you go off-season it will probably be quite crowded.

The famous Jackie O club offers amazing views of Super Paradise. This picturesque, gay-friendly bar is known for its drag shows and other similar events.

Paradise beach on the other hand is more low-key. There are plenty of bars and clubs as well as water sports and a diving school. For people thinking to stay longer in Mykonos without breaking the bank, Paradise Beach camping is a popular choice.

The best beaches in Mykonos Greece

Platis Gialos beach has amazing white and golden sand and palm trees, and it feels really exotic. It might be easier to get there on a Mykonos tour, as there is no free parking space.

One of our favourite Mykonian beaches was Kalafatis, a little further out of Mykonos Town. It's one of the few beaches on the island with natural shade, and there are also plenty of watersports. We could easily have spent our whole day in Mykonos right here!

Finally, if you prefer more relaxed beaches and you can take a full-day tour in Mykonos, head to Agrari. While a part of the beach is organized with loungers and umbrellas, some of it is natural and wild. This was one of our top things to do in Mykonos island.

Most of the beaches mentioned above are accessible in some form of public transportation, taxi or private car. However, an easier (and more fun) way to see a few of the beaches is a full-day coast cruise .

Here is a complete guide of all Mykonos beaches .

See the sunset in Mykonos

Wait, what? Isn't Santorini the island where the sunsets are spectacular? Well, Santorini may be more famous for its sunsets, but we found that some of the sunsets in Mykonos were actually better.

A magnificent Mykonos sunset at the lighthouse

Sure, Mykonos does not have a volcano like Santorini, but the Mykonian sunsets are great regardless!

Where to see the Mykonos sunset

One of the most advertised places to see the sunset in Mykonos island is the Armenistis lighthouse. It can get quite crowded in peak season, but the views are beautiful and wild, and feel miles away from the all-night parties.

Armenistas Lighthouse Sunset Mykonos

Walk all the way past Armenistis, and you will feel like you are on the edge of the world.

Another beautiful spot to watch the sunset from in Mykonos is Kapari beach. You can only get there in your own transportation. Turn right after Agios Ioannis church, and you'll then need to drive on a narrow dirt road where you can't reverse. Bonus – you can see Delos in the background.

One of our favourite sunsets in Mykonos was from the beach under the windmills in Chora, just behind the Sea Satin restaurant. The restaurant was closed when we were there, and we were the only people on that small beach. While seeing the sunset from Caprice bar in Little Venice is very high on most people's things to do in Mykonos, we were happier to stay on the quiet little beach.

If sunset views from above are important to you, a great place to go is 180 Sunset Bar. Depending on when you are visiting Mykonos, reservations may be required. Check their website for more information.

Sunset on a beach in mykonos

Finally, if your schedule allows it, another option is to take a half-day sunset tour to some of the island's beautiful beaches. This is an ideal tour if you want to explore the best beaches of Mykonos island without having to worry about transportation.

Nightlife in Mykonos

The nightlife in Mykonos doesn't really need an introduction. If you are staying 24 hours in Mykonos including overnight, go for a late drink in one of the numerous bars and clubs. Walk around Chora, and discover your own favourite.

Should I visit the monastery of Tourliani in Ano Mera?

Apart from Mykonos town, the island doesn't really have many other villages like Tinos or Naxos do. The only other settlement which is not a tourist resort is Ano Mera, a small inland town.

The main attraction here is the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani. While it's quite impressive, I wouldn't include it in my list of what to see in Mykonos in one day. If you are staying longer, by all means go.

How to get to Mykonos

Mykonos has an international airport. There are several direct flights connecting major European cities with the pretty Aegean island. Alternatively, you can fly to Athens and take a domestic flight.

Taking the ferry from Mykonos to Syros

Another option is to take a ferry from one of the nearby islands or Piraeus, the Athens port. Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Tinos, and many other of the Cyclades are directly connected with Mykonos.

You can take a look at my Mykonos to Santorini ferry guide , as this is one of the more popular connections.

Many people choose to take a normal ferry, which is slower and offers a comfortable trip. Others prefer a high-speed ferry, which is more expensive but takes considerably less time.

Mykonos Shore Excursions

If you've gotten this far and you feel a little overwhelmed, perhaps organized Mykonos shore excursions might suit you. Here are the best of the best:

One Day in Mykonos From Cruise Ship: The Perfect Itinerary

Are you looking for a one-day Mykonos from cruise ship itinerary for your next Mediterranean cruise ? Then I got you covered!

Mykonos was my favorite stop on my 7-day cruise through the Eastern Mediterranean sea – and I will make sure you will love it just as much.

There is so much to see and do on this small island that it can be so hard to choose from. Mykonos is relatively small, with only 10.000 inhabitants living on the island.

But with only one day to explore this amazing island, how do you make the most of your precious time?

I have been to Mykonos on a cruise and have absolutely loved my day there. To make sure you have an amazing experience as well, I have created this ultimate guide to help you have an unforgettable day in Mykonos.

Let’s dive in!

A bright, sunny view of a coastal cafe in Mykonos. White chairs and tables are arranged on a stone-paved terrace, with the tranquil sea stretching out in the background, and traditional whitewashed buildings with blue accents line the waterfront.

First, let’s start by locating the cruise port. The busiest port in Mykonos is in Tourlos, which welcomes large cruise ships from April through October. It is located near Agios Stefanos Beach.

From there, you can either take a public bus to Chora, the island’s main town, or hire a taxi for a relatively short ride there. It is about 1.2 miles (3.5 kilometers) of driving time. It costs about EUR 10,00 to get to town.

Alternatively, you can also walk, but it takes about 30 minutes and there are no sidewalks.

Or if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a scooter or ATV and get ready to explore the island a little deeper.

Mykonos cruise port marked on a map

When coming to Mykonos on a cruise ship, you’ll have a couple of options when deciding what to do. The island is not too big, so you can easily discover most of it on the shore day.

Here are some of your options when coming to Mykonos:

  • Book a guided day tour or shore excursion
  • Visit the capital city of Chora and Little Venice
  • Hike up to the windmills of Mykonos
  • Check out the stunning beaches of Mykonos
  • Discover archeological sites

If you choose to book a guided day trip or a tour in Mykonos, you need to make sure it has a good cancellation policy. Cruise ships do not always dock punctually, and sometimes ports of call even get canceled due to bad weather on the way.

I usually book all my trips with Viator. They are usually amazing and affordable – and you can cancel them without paying a penalty. Perfect for cruisers.

Plus – they usually offer cruise ship pickup so you don’t need to organize a thing.

If you don’t want to find your own way around the island, this is your best option.

Another cool thing to do in Mykonos is exploring the charming alleys of Chora, also known as Mykonos Town.

Chora is the picturesque capital city of the island. You can find it on its northwest coast. It’s known for its whitewashed homes and cobblestone streets .

Chora is home to about 600 – 800 little historic churches, you can spot them by the little cross on the rooftops.

My favorite feature of Chora are the bright pink bougainvillea plants that make the small alleys even more picturesque.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy in Chora, including shopping at the boutique stores along Matoyianni Street . You can also check out the famous galleries and museums. I loved the secondhand designer stores in Mykonos, they had amazing products at a great price point.

Chora has several museums worth visiting, such as the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and the Aegean Maritime Museum . The best galleries to visit are the Lifeline Art Studio and Municipal Art Gallery

If you are interested in a big dose of culture, you might want to visit Virgin Tourliani / Panagia Tourliani . It is a famous monastery that has a fabulous marble fountain and lots of interesting artifacts.

picture of white greek house with pink bougainvillea flowers in front

The Kato Mili windmills are one of the most iconic landmarks of Mykonos and something that needs to be on your one-day-in-Mykonos itinerary. Not only are they super picturesque but you also have an amazing view from the windmills.

The windmills are conveniently located on a hill super close to Chora (Mykonos Town). From the windmills, you can see Little Venice and the Aegean Sea.

The iconic windmills were built by the Venetians in the 16th century . Back in the day, they were used to grind wheat and barley into flour, which the island people depended on.

Today, they are no longer operational. But they are among the most visited landmarks in Mykonos.

To see the Kato Mili windmills, you will need to climb a few stairs to reach them. I found the stairs not too intense, but you do need to wear good shoes. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or rent a scooter or ATV to reach the windmills. Keep in mind that there are only 30 taxis in Mykonos , so you might wait a while.

A picturesque waterfront dining area, where waves splash against colorful houses with balconies that hover above the sea. The tables are neatly lined up, inviting guests to enjoy the view and the fresh sea breeze.

Little Venice is one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods in Mykonos and it is my favorite spot on the island. You can find Little Venice in the western part of Mykonos Town.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in Little Venice:

Little Venice is known for its charming houses and restaurant terraces that overlook the sea. Enjoy the stunning views while you relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. Sipping a cocktail or a coffee by the ocean with my loved one is my number one favorite activity on any trip.

Visit the Panagia Paraportiani Church : This famous church is located in Little Venice and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Mykonos. It is a unique example of Cycladic architecture, with a whitewashed exterior and four chapels. Translated it is called “Our Lady of the Side Gate”.

Little Venice is home to many bars and clubs that offer live music and fabulous cocktails. It’s a great place to experience the vibrant nightlife of Mykonos. This of course is only a consideration if your cruise ship stays overnight in Mykonos.

The ancient ruins of a circular, stone-built assembly place, possibly an amphitheater. Sun-bleached stones and fragments are scattered across the ground, all under the vast expanse of a clear blue sky.

Mykonos is not particularly known for its archaeological sites. But there are still a couple of interesting archaeological sites that you can visit on the island.

Here are my favorite historical sites to visit in Mykonos:

🌴 Delos is a small uninhabited island located just a few kilometers southwest of Mykonos. The site includes temples, sanctuaries, markets, and residential areas . Super interesting and only a short boat ride away.

🌴 Kastro Panigiraki is an old castle and fort with high stone walls. It is located right outside of Mykonos Town. It is mainly famous for housing the Anemos Windmill.

🌴 Ftelia Archaeological Site is located on the northern coast of Mykonos which was once a significant settlement in the Neolithic period. The Site is located on a beach and shows ruins of houses and other interesting structures.

I suggest including at least one of these sites in your one-day in Mykonos itinerary – since it is a great chance to learn about the history and culture of the small island.

Picture of a beautiful beach with sunbeds in Mykonos and some flowers

The best beaches in Mykonos are nothing short of amazing! Whether you’re looking for a secluded spot or a more fun atmosphere, Mykonos has it all!

Here are my favorite beaches to visit during your one day in Mykonos:

🏝️ Paradise Beach is of the most popular beaches in Mykonos. With soft golden sand and clear blue water, there’s plenty to do here. Enjoy sunbathing, swimming, jet skiing, windsurfing and more! It also has lots of beach bars and restaurants.

🏝️ Elia Beach is located on the south side of the island and is perfect for relaxing in the sun. It is a lot quieter than the other beaches of Mykonos.

🏝️ Agios Sostis Beach is another quiet and peaceful spot located in northern Mykonos. This glorious beach is backed by mountains and offers some stunningly turquoise waters.

🏝️ Super Paradise Beach is home to some of the best parties on Mykonos. It is quite fun in the day, but I feel like it is a bit crowded in the evenings.

🏝️ Agios Ioannis Beach is a beautiful, quiet beach located on the southwestern coast of Mykonos. It offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the island of Delos.

🏝️ Psarou Beach is a beautiful sandy beach that is popular among celebrities and VIPs, so you have probably seen it on Instagram. Here are fancy restaurants and beach clubs.

Do you need travel insurance in Greece? Yes, travel insurance in Greece is highly recommended. Unsafe roads, water sports accidents, and food poisoning are only a few examples of when travel insurance could come in handy.   EKTA offers worldwide travel insurance  with 24/7 service and no hidden fees or restrictions.

A charming outdoor dining setting with wooden tables and chairs. Overhead, lush pink bougainvillea blooms cascade down, adding a pop of color. The scene is completed with rustic lanterns and a soft, serene sky in the background.

There are so many great restaurants in Mykonos that serve delicious lunches and traditional cuisine. After a fun day exploring, what could be more refreshing than a big bowl of traditional tzatziki.

Here are some of my favorite restaurants:

🍹 Kiki’s Tavern: Located on the beach of Agios Sostis, Kiki’s Tavern is a famous seafood restaurant that serves fresh fish and grilled meats. It has a relaxed and casual atmosphere and stunning views. Fun fact: they do not offer Wifi or electricity so people can actually enjoy the view without being disturbed by phones.

🍹 Captain’s: Super cute and authentic restaurant. They offer the so-called mezze-eating: little tapas and finger food are served and shared with the entire table.

🍹 Spilia Seaside Restaurant: This restaurant is located on a small platform of rocks in Agia Anna, and it serves Mediterranean cuisine. The setting is unique and romantic, making it a popular spot for couples. It is also one of the most iconic Mykonos hotspots, so it can get quite full. Keep in mind that they only open at 2:00 pm so it might be a late lunch.

🍹 Avli Thou Thodori: a small restaurant located on Platis Gialos Beach offering a breathtaking view and a big variety of local dishes. They are especially famous for their seafood dishes.

🍹 Nikolas Taverna: Nikolas Taverna is a family-run restaurant that serves delicious homemade Greek food. The menu includes dishes such as moussaka, stuffed tomatoes, and grilled lamb.

🍹 Kastro’s Cafe in Myokonos is probably the most famous hot spot on the island. It is mainly known for being located in a small alley right by the water.

🍹 Kyklamino : A family-run business specializing in sweet delights. Make sure to stop by for a yummy dessert!

These are just a few of the many great lunch restaurants in Mykonos. My favorite place to have lunch is in Little Venice, it is simply so cute and picturesque.

There are several ways to get around Mykonos, depending on your preferences and budget. Of course you also need to keep in mind that your cruise ship will dock outside the bigger cities.

Here are some of the best options on how to get around Mykonos:

  • Walking: Mykonos Town is a pedestrian-friendly area. T he small alleys are best explored on foot. Walking is a great way to discover the hidden corners of the town and to enjoy the charming architecture and atmosphere. However, I would not recommend walking from the cruise ship to town, since there are no sidewalks.
  • Public Transportation: There are buses that run regularly between Mykonos Town and other parts of the island. The buses are reliable and affordable, and the routes cover most of the popular destinations on the island. Since your cruise ship will most likely only be in town for a few hours, I would not recommend this option either. Flexibility is key when you want to see a lot of the island in little time.
  • Taxis: Taxis are available throughout Mykonos, and can be found at taxi stands in Mykonos Town and other popular locations. There are also taxis available at the cruise port. Taxis are a convenient and comfortable way to get around the island, but they can be more expensive than other options. Also, there are only 30 taxis on the entire island, so it might take a while to find one.
  • Scooter/ATV rental: Renting a scooter or ATV is my favorite thing to do when exploring an island, There are many rental shops in Mykonos Town and they even offer rentals right at the cruise port usually. It is cheap and flexible and a fun adventure.
  • Car Rental: Renting a car is another great option if you want to be more flexible but a bit safer than on a scooter. There are many car rental companies in Mykonos, and rental prices are reasonable . However, driving in Mykonos can be challenging due to the narrow and winding roads. If you choose to rent a car, I suggest you get a very small one, because parking can be a hassle.

Overall, there are many options for getting around Mykonos, and the choice depends on your preferences, budget, and itinerary. My favorite option is definitely renting an ATV, and I can wholeheartedly recommend that for Mykonos.

Mykonos is a magical little island in Greece that will captivate your heart with its stunning beaches, historic landmarks, and delicious food.

Even with just one day, you can enjoy an unforgettable experience by exploring its hidden gems and exploring the cute towns.

One day may not be enough to see the entire island, but this guide will surely help you make the most out of your one day in Mykonos on a cruise! See the famous windmills, the charming town of Little Venice and the impressive churches of Mykonos in just one day.

One day in Mykonos is definitely enough to get a taste of the island. Start by exploring the beautiful town of Mykonos with its iconic Greek architecture and breathtaking views. Take a stroll through Little Venice and catch glimpses of the famous windmills and explore the 15th-century Greek orthodox Paraportiani church. If you wish to explore the island more, I suggest staying for at least 5 days.

It greatly depends on what your plans are. If you wish to do some sight seeing and eat a light lunch, you can expect to be spending no more than 50 USD. If you wish for more luxury it can be anywhere from USD 100 and upwards.

Yes, Mykonos Town is walkable. The town is not very big and everything is close by. You can reach the famous windmills in only a couple of steps. From the cruise port to Mykonos town, you might want to catch a cab.

I prefer Santorini over Mykonos. The island is a bit bigger and has more to offer. While Mykonos has some amazing spots, it is mainly attracting party goers and jet setters. Santorini does have a lot more cultural and historical sites to offer.

The best months to go on a cruise to Mykonos are May, June, and September. I have been in April and it was a little bit too chilly to swim. In July and August, it can be too hot and too touristy, so I would not recommend going then.

Best things to do in Mykonos for one day

Visit the famous windmills of mykonos.

mykonos cruise day trip

The list of best things to do in Mykonos for one day starts with the most famous attraction on the island. The Windmills of Mykonos are featured on most of the postcards of this popular Greek Island and it is a must-visit if you have one day in Mykonos.

Most of the windmills around the islands were built by the Venetians and they were primarily used to mill wheat. There are in total 16 windmills on Mykonos and seven are positioned on the landmark hill in Chora. Here is where your Mykonos one-day itinerary should start.

Discover Little Venice

mykonos cruise day trip

The windy hill of Chora is also a perfect place to admire one of the most popular spots in Mykonos. Little Venice is among the most photographed places in Europe and you will easily understand why.

As the name suggests, the construction of the sight started when the island was under Venetian Rule in the 13th century. The majority of the houses used to belong to rich merchants and wealthy businessmen of the time.

Nowadays, this district of Mykonos is one of the most romantic sights in all of Greece and the house of many artists from all over the world.

Take walk on the promenade and hunt for the best views over Little Venice. There are many bars and restaurants on the promenade if you want to sit down and chill for a while.

Strolling the Old Town

mykonos cruise day trip

When you explore Mykonos Old Town you will see an explosion of bright white and blue colors. Luckily the picturesque old town is not so big and even with a Mykonos one-day itinerary, you should be able to cover all the relevant sights.

Get lost in the small alleys and find some pretty cafes like Hibiscus. Here you can try some delicious baklava and fresh orange juices, and even take a perfect Mykonos picture.

Or find some of the most picturesque boutiques in the world, shop for some unique design clothes, and make your trip to Mykonos even more unforgettable. Don’t miss these cute I Love Mykonos stairs and Happiness store.

Finally, if you are an architecture lover, head to Metropolitan Church. Don’t miss the Agia Kyriaki Church. This Byzantine church stands on a tiny picturesque square and it is a must-see when you travel to Mykonos.

Enjoy local food at Sakis

mykonos cruise day trip

When you think about the food and restaurants in Mykonos, you probably imagine fine dining and fancy restaurants. And let’s be honest, Mykonos is famous for that. But what if I tell you that you can try some very delicious Greek specialties in the old town of Mykonos for less than 10 euros?

Sakis is one of the most popular places in Mykonos to try some unforgettable gyros. The place is not fancy, but you can sit in a lovely alley or in a little square with a view and enjoy simple local food.

This is the perfect place to have a quick lunch or relax with a drink and get the best on what to do in Mykonos for one day. Sakis is open every day from 11 am to 1 am.

Photograph Panagia Paraportiani

mykonos cruise day trip

Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most famous places on the island and has to be included in every ultimate Mykonos in a one-day itinerary. This whitewashed church stands on top of a rock and the lovely shape of the facade makes it one of the most photographed places in Mykonos.

Explore Old Port

mykonos cruise day trip

A few steps away from Panagia Paraportiani is The Old Harbor, which is another important thing to see in Mykonos in one day. The Old Harbor is just behind Little Venice and it is a lively area where the traditional fish market takes place. It is the perfect place to have picturesque views of the islands and the old traditional kaikia boats.

Petros the Pelican is a local celebrity and usually, you can find him in the area of the Old Port. Just like the windmills, he is the symbol of Mykonos. The history of Petros dates back to 1958 when a pelican found shelter in the old Port of Mykonos.

The locals took immediate care of the bird and adopted him giving him the name Petros, which means “rock” in Greek. Sadly, Petros the Pelican died in 1985 but nowadays there is another pelican who inhabits the island.

Whether you are one day in Mykonos on a cruise ship or you are spending a long weekend in Mykonos try to find Petros and see if he wants to be your friend. However, please keep your distance and let him walk around freely.

Optional: learn history at the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos

mykonos cruise day trip

If you want to take an immersion in Greek culture and history, head to the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. The museum opened for the first time in 1902 and was designed by the architect Alexandros Lykakis. It lies a few meters away from the Old Port.

The site is rich in neoclassical features and countless historical relics and vestiges of the past. It was built in order to preserve findings recovered from the Purification Pit, which dates back to 426-425 B.C.

Keep in mind that the museum is closed during the low season.

Optional: head to Delos

mykonos cruise day trip

If you have a few hours left in the afternoon, you can take a trip to Delos. Delos is an island with more than 3000 years of history and it lies 30 minutes away from Mykonos Old Port.

It is home to one of the most important and best-preserved archeological sites in the Greek Islands. The ruins include Doric temples, markets, an amphitheater, houses with mosaics, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues.

  • Visit Delos independently: book a transfer from Mykonos to Delos .
  • Visit Delos with a guided tour: book an evening tour with a guide to Delos.

Optional: choose a beach

mykonos cruise day trip

It is hard to imagine a trip to Mykonos without visiting a beach.

If you have one day in Mykonos from a cruise ship, you might want to consider Paralia Choras Mikonou. This small beach is located between the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and the Old Port. And if you have less than 24 hours in Mykonos, it could be a perfect idea to take a swim in the blue waters of Greece.

If you don’t care much about sightseeing and you just want to tan and swim your choice is Paralia Agia Anna. This beach has a relaxed atmosphere and it was recommended to us by a local. It is located near the famous Paradise Beach – another popular choice if you have to visit Mykonos in one day.

If you are looking for a hidden gem with spectacular scenery, head to Kapari beach. This is one of the best beaches in Mykonos. It is quite small, and you will have to walk the path, but it’s usually not crowded since it is not so famous.

Optional: RIZES Mykonos – Folkore Farmstead

mykonos cruise day trip

If you are looking for unique experiences in Mykonos, your Mykonos itinerary for 1 day should include RIZES Mykonos – Folklore Farmstead. It is a rustic house located 30 minutes away from Mykonos Old Town.

This is a place where you will see different Mykonos – rural, authentic, and with great charm. In RIZES Mykonos – Folklore Farmstead you can try delicious local food or even take some unforgettable activities like cooking classes, bread making, or guided tours.

Touch the Sunset was one of the highlights of my Mykonos vacation, however, you can see all their activities here .

Climb up for the best views over Mykonos

mykonos cruise day trip

A list of the best things to do in Mykonos for one day wouldn’t be complete without some epic views over the town. While these views over Mykonos might look familiar, there are not many instructions on how to find this viewpoint. I am here to help you with that!

First, put Cafe Vero on your Google Maps and take the little stairs right behind the bar. This is certainly a less fancy area of Mykonos, but 10 minutes of stairs and you should arrive. The viewpoint will be on your right and you certainly won’t miss it. You will see a little wall, so you can either climb over or arrive from the top.

Location: best views of Mykonos

End your one day in Mykonos with a drink or dinner

Mykonos Itinerary from a cruise ship

If you are feeling tired after one day in Mykonos, you can see the sunset from one of many bars instead. Little Venice is the place to be and here you can find some fancy bars with sea and windmill views to end your one-day Mykonos itinerary with a blast.

My recommendation for you is Negrita, one of the most famous bars on the island. This fame comes with a cost, and it is hard to find a seat, cocktails are quite expensive, but the quality, ambiance, and service justify the price.

Feeling hungry? Head to Nice n Easy instead. The owner of our hotel suggested Nice n Easy as one of the best fancy restaurants in Mykonos and it didn’t disappoint. The food was delicious but the direct view of the Little Venice and the windmills was my personal highlight.

Ferries and cruise ships to Mykonos Island dock in Mykonos Town. Mykonos cruise ship terminal is located at Tourlos. It is near Agios Stefanos beach. The distance to Mykonos Town is approximately 4 km and you can find shuttle buses to the town center. Or you can catch a taxi from the taxi square on the Mykonos waterfront. If you prefer to walk, the distance is about half an hour.

English is widely spoken in Mykonos, but being a tourist place you can find people speaking other languages too.

Euro is the currency and you can find ATMs easily in Mykonos Town, nevertheless, the majority of the places accept cards.

How to get around Mykonos in a day?

mykonos cruise day trip

When visiting Mykonos for 1 day, choosing the right method to move around is essential to save time and money. Here are the best ways to move around Mykonos together with the pros and cons.

Public buses are quite frequent and connect the Old Town of Mykonos with the port and the airport. The average price is between 1.80 and 3 euros, if you are wondering how to visit Mykonos in one day on a budget you can rely on public transport. Keep in mind that there are different timetables between the summer and winter seasons.

If you are in a rush and don’t want to waste time waiting for a bus, a taxi is a very easy and quick option. It will take you to the town in a few minutes and will cost you around 30 euros.

You can also rent a car or a scooter and explore the island on your own. Since the island size is quite small, you will be able to travel around the place and plan your own stops. If you are planning just to visit the old town, I don’t recommend this option.

Walking is the best option to wander around Mykonos Old Town. the streets are very tiny and cars are not allowed. In this way, you will discover all the charm of the island.

One Day in Mykonos Itinerary For Cruise Passengers

Emerging from the beautiful Aegean Sea like a shimmering jewel, Mykonos, the “Island of Winds”, is a destination laden with charm and Greek splendor. Famous for its narrow winding streets, iconic windmills, pristine beaches, and captivating sunset views, it’s a place that leaves an indelible imprint on your soul.

If you’re planning a vacation and your cruise ship drops anchor here for a day, I have the perfect itinerary. On my cruise through Greece with Silversea Cruises , we stopped in Mykonos and so I’ve done this exact itinerary myself.

This one day Mykonos itinerary will help you discover the island’s beautiful secrets, even with just a short amount of time.

A Brief Intro to Mykonos

Mykonos, is a stunning island located in the South Aegean Sea. It’s an iconic destination in the Greek Cycladic archipelago, revered as one of Greece’s most glamorous and vibrant islands.

Mykonos’s rich history stretches back to the 5th century BC and is intertwined with numerous myths and ancient Greek legends. The island’s name is believed to be derived from a local hero named ‘Mykons,’ who was considered a descendant of the god Apollo.

Historically, Mykonos prospered as a commercial and trade center due to its strategic location along the trade routes between Venice, Asia Minor, and the mainland of Greece. It was under the control of the Romans and Byzantines before falling to the Venetians in the 13th Century. Mykonos was a victim of frequent pirate attacks due to its trading wealth and strategic maritime importance.

During the 20th century, Mykonos transformed into a flourishing tourist destination, drawing international acclaim for its vibrant atmosphere, traditional Cycladic charm, and hedonistic lifestyle. Today, it’s a cosmopolitan haven that hosts millions of tourists, celebs, and artists from around the globe each year.

The island’s energy, its mythical past, and the hedonic present, create a fascinating melting pot of cultural and leisure experiences for every visitor to Mykonos.

Morning: Mykonos Town, The Windmills & Paraportiani Church

Getting into town.

Cruise ships usually dock in the new port, Tourlos, which is about a 30 minute walk to town. Shuttles are available and there’s also the “Sea Bus” ferry, which costs about €5 roundtrip. A taxi into town will cost around €10 one way.

My cruise ship had a tender (little boat) that transported us to the center of town, so I hopped on this.

Sights to See in Chora

Start with a visit to the iconic Windmills (Kato Mili) . Standing tall on a hill, these windmills have been a symbol of Mykonos’ rich history since the 16th century. Though no longer functional, they offer breathtaking views of the town and are a photographer’s delight.

Near the windmills you’ll also be able to capture some beautiful pictures of Little Venice from afar. Next, walk towards Visit the architectural marvel of Paraportiani Church , one of the most photographed spots in the Aegean. This whitewashed church, composed of four smaller churches amalgamated into one, exemplifies the classic Cycladic architectural style that Mykonos is known for.

After capturing memories at Paraportiani Church, head towards the harbor front where you’ll find the charming blue-domed St Nikolaos Church . The church is a beautiful example of the traditional Cycladic architecture, with its whitewashed walls and blue dome. It’s also one of the most photographed spots in Mykonos.

Walk along the waterfront and check out the Manto Mavrogenous Statue , a tribute to the Greek heroine who fought in the Greek War of Independence. The statue is located near the entrance of the old port and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

If you want to keep walking further along the waterfront, you’ll eventually stumble across Paralia Choras Mikonou , which is a small beach in the town. It’s nothing special, and definitely not anywhere close to as nice as other beaches on the island, but people still lay out here and have a swim. Beyond it is Baboulas Ouzeri – a seafood restaurant with scenic views of the town – plus the Archeological Museum of Mykonos and the Old Port.

Next, spend some time in the picturesque Mykonos Town . Wander through its maze-like streets, lined with quintessentially Greek white-and-blue houses. Matoyanni is the main street in Mykonos and is filled with little shops and boutiques. You can easily spend an hour here just snapping photos and admiring the pretty streets.

Visit the Rarity Gallery – a contemporary art gallery that showcases the work of local artists. It’s located in the heart of Mykonos Town and has some great pieces on display. The gallery also hosts exhibitions throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s happening when you visit.

Want to discover Chora in depth? I’ve put together a full article on the best things to do in Mykonos Old Town . Also check out my Greece travel guide , which has all my blog posts in one place.

Lunch: Mykonos Old Town

As midday approaches, treat yourself to a lunch in one of the many local taverns that dot Mykonos old town. Savor traditional Greek delicacies like Moussaka, Souvlaki, or Tzatziki, cushioned by local wines, as you absorb the rhythm of life in Mykonos.

Some places to have lunch in Mykonos Town:

Niko’s Taverna – A must-visit spot for Greek cuisine lovers, Niko’s Taverna offers an excellent assortment of traditional dishes served up in a charming street-side setting. Try their renowned gyros and tzatziki, rounded off with some traditional Greek yogurt for dessert.

Sakis Grill Room – A popular eatery with locals and tourists alike, Sakis Grill Room serves up mouth-watering souvlaki, Greek salad and a variety of authentic gyros. Don’t miss trying their succulent mixed grill platter.

Nice n Easy – Living up to its name, Nice n Easy offers a relaxingly enjoyable dining experience. It’s known for its organic selections, blending traditional Greek cuisine with a contemporary touch. Their dishes, prepared from locally sourced ingredients, highlight the essence of Mediterranean flavors.

Lalala Mykonos – Located near the iconic windmills of Mykonos, Lalala is worth a visit for its ambiance alone. The menu features an array of Greek delicacies, with seafood being a staple. If you’re a wine lover, their extensive wine list won’t disappoint.

Kastro’s – Perched on the waterfront in the Little Venice area, Kastro’s provides magnificent sea views. This quaint eatery combines the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Mykonian taverna with an exclusive gourmet twist. The Mediterranean fish dish and signature cocktails are much-recommended.

Afternoon: Super Paradise Beach & Beach Club

Post-lunch, take a taxi to the legendary Super Paradise Beach . There are local buses that go there, but since you’re only in Mykonos for one day, I’d save time by hopping in a taxi.

Blessed with golden sand and crystal-clear azure waters, this beach is the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sunshine. Rent a lounge chair, swim in the ocean and enjoy a refreshing cocktail.

Also, don’t miss the Super Paradise Beach Club , a place synonymous with fun and entertainment. Here, you can dance to the rhythm of famous DJs or simply chill-out with a refreshing cocktail.

Super Paradise Beach can be pretty crowded in summer, but it’s a nice beach and great for people watching. The beach club is always a good time, with dancing, DJs and a fun crowd.

As an alternative to Super Paradise Beach, you could venture to Paraga Beach, and visit the famous beach club, Scorpios . Scorpios is part of the Soho Roc Beach House and is known for being one of the best beach clubs on the island.

This upscale hangout is a place to see and be seen; it has a bohemian vibe with cabanas, comfy lounge chairs, a restaurant and a boutique. It’s known for its legendary sunset “rituals” with live music and DJs.

Evening: Little Venice & Sunset

Catch a water taxi back to Mykonos Town just before dusk. You’ll see small boats on the beach offering rides back to Chora. Alternatively you can take a regular taxi. Beeline directly for Little Venice .

This neighborhood, notable for its houses that seem to rise directly from the sea, is the ideal place to witness the world-famous Mykonos sunset. With a cocktail in hand, watch as the sun slowly dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple — a truly magical end to your day.

Each of these Little Venice bars has its own ambience:

Bao’s Cocktail Bar – Standout for its ‘Drink Different’ philosophy, Bao’s offers an inventive cocktail menu. The Cycladic-inspired all-white decor along with colorful cushions and rugs makes it a delightful spot to enjoy the Mykonos sunset.

Kastro’s Bar – Famed for its splendid sea view and stunning sunset vistas, Kastro’s is an enchanting bar known for its signature cocktails and romantic ambiance, perfect for an evening drink.

Veranda Bar – With a laid-back, boho-chic vibe, Veranda Bar serves as a comfortable retreat where you can indulge in delicious cocktails while soaking up panoramic views of Little Venice and the vibrant nightlife.

Scarpa Bar – A vibrant, energetic bar that’s hard to miss, Scarpa is known for its creative mixology and pulsating music. It’s a popular choice for enjoying a cocktail and dancing to DJ tunes all night long.

Rhapsody Bar – A cozy spot for chilling out, Rhapsody Bar boasts friendly bartenders, unique cocktails, and an inviting atmosphere. The sea view from this bar adds a touch of serenity to your evening.

Katarina’s – Katarina’s is not only famous for its spectacular sunset views but it also offers a refined selection of wines and Greek meze. Its balcony seating provides an incredible vista of the old port and Little Venice.

Negrita – A waterfront bar with a lively atmosphere, Negrita is an exceptional place for enjoying the evening with a cocktail in hand. Don’t overlook their delightful appetizers that perfectly complement the drinks.

Cerise – Known for its chic design and friendly staff, Cerise offers a relaxing atmosphere to unwind after a day of exploration. Immerse yourself in their extensive range of wine and cocktail offerings paired with delicious finger foods.

Is One Day Enough in Mykonos?

You can certainly see everything there is to do in the main town of Chora in just one day. You can also squeeze in a visit to the beach as well if you don’t mind a busy schedule. Obviously if you’re visiting on a cruise ship and only have one day, then this is all you have to work with. But if you’re visiting on your own, ideally I’d recommend spending about 3 nights or more if you want to explore the island’s beaches and experience all the different beach clubs.

A Final Word

While this one day in Mykonos itinerary is packed, it covers this magical island’s highlights, offering a blend of culture, history, beaches, gastronomy, and leisure. Mykonos is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that will leave you wanting to stay longer.

This tour was through “icriuse.com” and the tour was called Exclusive Athens with free time in the Plaka. Let me say, when in Athens you must see the Acropolis and the Plaka. The tour guide was awful and the bus ride was absolutely miserable. It was a $90 bus ride per person and this did not include the admission to the Acropolis. You are better off taking a taxi or light rail service to the Acropolis. The Plaka is within walking distance from the Acropolis. We totally blew off the tour guide. He was disorganized, not professional, and took no interest in the group. Once we knew where to go and what to do, we had a great time. The Plaka is worth seeing and the garden restaurants were very lovely and the food was amazing. Read more Written June 19, 2023
  • tonys2106 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Upmarket, relaxed, and perfect cruise👌 We looked for a day cruise while in Corfu and found hundreds at a cost of €40-€55 for the day, some lasting up to ten hours and most offering a free pick up at your hotel. The one thing that put us off was the number of people on each cruise we looked at. We came across this cruise and noted it was aboard a beautiful wooden vessel, with much fewer people and a more personalised experience. The cost was higher at about €76 per person, and you had to make your own way to Corfu old port to join the tour. We arrived at 9.45 am today and were warmly greeted by Spiros. He sat us down and offered us coffee and cakes, which was a nice start to the day. Over the next twenty minutes, the rest of the passengers arrived, I would estimate maybe 20-25 people in total. All the staff were friendly and professional. We started towards our first stop at Nissaki Cave. Spiros swam with us and guided us through the cave, and afterwards, we swam back to the vessel. Refreshments were available all the time. The staff were hand preparing fresh fruit, vegetables and meat in the galley. When they realised my wife and I were vegetarian, Spiros insisted on cooking us a separate meal of grilled mushrooms peppers and other veggy foods. We cruised for an hour or so, looking at the Albanian shoreline and a two hundred year old lighthouse on the way. Everyone was chilled out with the staff constantly asking if we would like any light refreshments. We arrived at Agios Stefanos, a really beautiful cove with a nice beach. Spiros docked the yacht thirty meters from the shore and put on the barbecue, while the rest of us swam ashore or relaxed. We had a really nice, freshly prepared lunch, which was well cooked by the lovely chef. Afterwards, we started the journey back to Corfu old port. On the way, Spiros bought out a small cake followed by two large platters of mixed fruit and sang (with the rest of us). Happy birthday to one of the passengers. We stopped once more on the way back, where some of us dived into the water and enjoyed ourselves. In no time, we were back at Corfu old port and disembarked. The time was 4.30 pm.and we had been aboard since 10 am. It just seemed to fly by. I would like to say that the few extra euro charged was worth every penny. Everything about the day was relaxed, professional, and friendly. We met some lovely people onboard, as well as all the staff. We would like to thank Spiros and his team for a great day out. What To Do In One Day

There’s something special about this picturesque Greek Island with its white-washed houses with bright blue accents and old, cobblestone alleys.

There’s nothing more romantic than the sight of purple bougainvillea dripping down a doorway that leads straight to the ocean! Mykonos is an authentic slice of paradise.

From incredible sights to postcard-worthy beaches and jaw-dropping sunsets, here are the best things to do in Mykonos in one day!

Little Venice

Mykonos To Ios Ferry Info - Little Venice On Mykonos Island Greece

Little Venice is the most romantic neighborhood in Mykonos, adorned with colorful houses that practically jut out into the sea. Hundreds of years old, this corner of the island was constructed when Mykonos was under Venetian rule.

Walk alongside the water and enjoy your views of the Cycladic houses that perfectly combine Italian and Greek styles. Little Venice is a dreamy seaside spot perfect for your first of many Instagram-worthy Mykonos photos!

Mykonos Windmills

The Mykonos windmills are the focal point of the local skyline and an iconic symbol of this famous Greek island. While there were once over 20 different windmills on the island, only seven remain today.

Capture the white-washed structures standing tall against the amazing backdrop of the sea and open sky. The windmills are just a 5-minute walk from Mykonos Town.

The Boni Windmill is Mykonos’ most famous windmill, and it’s located inside the open-air Agricultural Museum. It’s a bit of an uphill climb to get here, but the view is totally worth it!

Platis Gialos beach, Mykonos, Greece

The beautiful beaches of Mykonos cannot be missed. Their crystal clear waters and cosmopolitan beach clubs are absolutely dazzling.

A dip in the Aegean Sea is the best possible way to enjoy the scorching Mediterranean summer sun. A tour of the gorgeous beaches of Psarou, Paradise, as well as the famous Super Paradise beach, should be on your itinerary if you want to get a taste of the energy Mykonos is renowned for.

You’ll be able to find plenty of beach shops and stands if you need to buy sunscreen, towels, or other accessories.

Wander Mykonos Town

Mykonos To Crete - Crete To Mykonos Guide

The Island of the Winds owes its name to the refreshing breeze that soothes the tourists traversing its charming cobblestone streets. The narrow alleys are decked out with darling boutiques, souvenir shops, cafés, and bars. Follow the town’s labyrinth-like alleyways to the iconic church of Panagia Paraportiani, one of the most photographed spots in Greece.

You’ll find the Old Port near the church, the home of Mykonos’ very own local celebrity. (And no, we’re not talking about Lindsay Lohan.) Petros the Pelican is the unofficial symbol of Mykonos. The original Petros was found injured and nursed back to health by a local fisherman. Since then, the pelican has been a symbol of good luck and prosperity for the island.

Greek Breakfast Foods - Eggs and olives

Your one-day visit to Mykonos won’t be complete without a taste of Greek cuisine . Islanders pride themselves on their authentic Mediterranean cuisine, served in rustic tavernas and charming restaurants all over the island. Fresh fish, goat cheese, tzatziki, moussaka, dolmades, and, of course, gyros are a few foods to try before heading on your way.

For a traditional Greek meal, head to Kiki’s Tavern . This hidden gem is located in Agios Sostis and boasts a stunning setting overlooking the sea. With fresh seafood, warm pita, and grilled meat, it’s the ideal lunch or dinner spot. Be sure to book in advance.

What to buy in Greece - Greek Souvenirs - Komboloi

Mykonos is a shopping paradise for those with a love of fashion and art. The island offers all kinds of shopping experiences, from adorable souvenirs (miniature windmill, anyone?) and Greek handicrafts to designer clothing and antique art. Make sure you check out Matogiania for all the best handmade pieces. Jean-Paul Gaultier shop and Rarity Art Gallery also belong at the top of your list!

Explore the well-preserved rooms adorned with authentic furniture, traditional clothing, and household items, providing an immersive experience of the past. With its picturesque setting and informative displays, Lena’s House Museum offers a fascinating journey into the history and traditions of Mykonos.

How to get around mykonos.

Panoramic view of Mykonos town, Cyclades islands, Greece

The best way to get around Mykonos is simply by walking, especially in the Old Town, where narrow streets and no cars are allowed. Not only will it save you money, it’ll save you time as well.

If you arrive by ferry or cruise ship, you’ll dock near Agios Stefanos beach, just a few kilometers from the central area of town.

Public buses frequently run between Mykonos Town and the port and Mykonos airport. The average ticket price is between 2-3 euros.

If you don’t want to waste time waiting for a bus, taxis are a good option, especially if you can split the cost between a small group. A trip from the port to the main town is just a few minutes and typically costs around 30 euros.

Car and scooter rentals are available if you plan to explore a wide portion of the island on your own, but it’s not recommended.

Where is Mykonos and what is it known for?

The of Mykonos is one of the most famous islands in the world and is a summer playground for the rich and famous and regular people too.

It is located in the north of the Cyclades group of islands, also home to Santorini. It is just 30 minutes north of Paros and Naxos by ferry and east of Syros, yet different from them all.

Mykonos is renowned for its beautiful beaches, world-class beach clubs and parties with international DJs and VIPs, as well as its picture-perfect Cycladic architecture. The Old Town is a popular destination and the waterfront area of Little Venice and the Windmills are some of the most photographed in Europe.

Right next door to Mykonos is the sacred island of Apollo so even people that are not interested in parties or beach clubs visit Mykonos just to go to Delos.

Where do the cruise ships dock in Mykonos?

Mykonos has two harbors, but the majority of ferries and cruise ships dock at the new one, Tourlos, located a few kilometers from Mykonos Town, right beside Agios Stefanos Beach.

Few cruise ships anchor off the old harbor; in this case, a tender boat will bring you on land right into the heart of Mykonos Town.

You will find several facilities at the new harbor, including the ferry terminal, car rental agencies, the sea bus jetty, and a taxi station.

How to get around Mykonos

Once you disembark in Mykonos, you will surely want to explore this beautiful island. Here are the best ways to get around.

Taxis are among the most popular ways to get around the island as they drive you to the designated point quickly. Like taxis pretty much everywhere, they don’t come for cheap. Another downside of taxis in Mykonos is that there aren’t many on the island (only 30), so you will likely need to wait around at times, especially during the peak of tourist season.

If you don’t want to spend those extra euros, catching a public bus is a great alternative method to move around the island. Cheap and efficient, the bus company operating the service on the island is KTEL. Since the island is relatively small, you won’t need to spend much time inside a bus to reach the most touristy spots.

Car hire is another option you have to get around Mykonos. Renting a car is the best way to maximize your time on the island, as it gives you the freedom to stop wherever you want and stay as long as you want without having to worry about specific schedules. That said, if it is peak season ( July -September) the roads will be very busy and parking can be an issue.

The newest transfer service available in Mykonos is the Sea Bus , which runs every 30 minutes and quickly connects the New Port (Tourlos) to the Old Port in Mykonos Town. The mini-cruise is charming, as you will admire the picturesque landscape of Mykonos from the sea.

one day in Mykonos

One Day in Mykonos itinerary

It is likely your cruise will offer several tours you can do. This can be easy and convenient as you simply follow the instructions of the Guide or Activities Director and join the rest of the tour.

The downside to these tours is they are usually more expensive than if you did them independently and they usually result in large crowds of people all descending on the same attractions at the same time. It also means you will be bound to the times dictated by the tour which may be at a slower pace than you would like, or perhaps too rushed. People consistently complain that time is too short on Santorini for example.

If you would like to explore the island at your own pace, this is what we suggest to maximise your one day on Mykonos.

The most popular tours offered by cruise ships and mainland operators are a day trip to sacred Delos Island, a tour of Mykonos Island, and a sailing trip around the two. These are great activities, but you can get them cheaper by booking your own, plus you might prefer to be away from the other passengers on your ship or explore more independently.

One day itinerary in Mykonos – Mykonos Town Only

a boat trip to Delos

Mykonos is close to one of the best archeological sites in Greece, Delos. During your stay in Mykonos, consider visiting the UNESCO-listed Delos. This small, uninhabited island used to be an economic and political power as it served as the Inviolable Sanctuary and the Seat of the Athenian League in the fourth century BC.

The island has an important role in Ancient Greek culture also because it was considered the birthplace of the Greek gods Apollo and Artemis, who are dedicated to the temples and sanctuaries you can still see the ruins of.

The only way to get to Delos is by ferry. From Mykonos’ old harbor, ferries depart every day of the week, with multiple departure times, between April-November. From November to March, there are very few ferries.

A great idea is to experience the stunning archeological site of Delos with an expert guide who will teach you all about its important history. This half-day tour of Delos from Mykonos is ideal if you want to reach Delos without having to organize the transfer on your own. The tour is led by a certified guide who will disclose all the site’s hidden gems.

Another option is this Viator tour , offering a 4-hour guided trip to Delos from Mykonos. This educational tour of Delos’ archaeological site will uncover the myths and history of ancient Greece.

This is also a great half-day trip to Delos , which includes the ferry from Mykonos to Delos and a local guide sharing their expert knowledge about the UNESCO site, showing you beautiful spots like the Terrace of the Lions and the House of Dionysus.

Mykonos Town – things to see and do

Called Chora (which means ‘main town’) by locals, Mykonos Town is one of the best-preserved historic towns on the Greek islands.

There is much to see and do in Mykonos Town, starting from the neighborhood of Little Venice. The houses of this district mix the traditional white-and-blue colors of Greek traditional buildings with the colorful style and architectural elements (arches and byways) of Venetian houses.

With their balconies hanging over the sea, you will have the feeling of being on one of the canals in Venice. The district is also a perfect area in the town for a sunset cocktail or a romantic dinner.

Another must-do in Mykonos is marveling at its iconic windmills. From Chora, you can actually see all the 16 windmills scattered around the island. Mykonos’s windmills date back to the 16th century, and they were built by Venetian merchants who arrived on the island.

Among the best windmills to discover is the legendary Boni Windmill, on the edge of the village of Apano Mili. Inside is housed the Agricultural Museum.

All the windmills have been pillars of the island’s economy for centuries, but the wheat industry died out during the 20th century. Thankfully, the windmills are perfectly preserved and the best spots in Mykonos to take in breathtaking panoramas.

Wandering around Mykonos, you will also see an incredible array of churches. The small island is home to over 600 of them! The most beautiful is located right in Chora, and is the famed Church of Panagia Paraportiani .

Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, the white-washed Panagia Paraportiani are five small churches built on each other, all boasting different architectural styles. The combo of Byzantine, Western European, and Cycladic styles gives life to this unique church located next to the entrance of the town.

There are more sights to see in Mykonos Town, including the Aegean Maritime Museum , the Rarity Art Gallery  and the churches of Agia Kyriaki and Agios Nikolaos.

one day in mykonos

The architecture of Ano Mera is quintessential Cycladic, with white-washed houses with colorful doors and windows, lush bougainvillea, and narrow streets. The village is incredibly tranquil, which is a big contrast to Mykonos’s most touristy areas, making it the ideal spot on the island to experience an authentic atmosphere.

In Ano Mera, you will find gorgeous Greek monasteries where you can learn more about local history and culture. Be sure to stop by the Panagia Tourliani Monastery and the Monastery of Paleokastro, which boast a wonderful religious art collection and Byzantine icons.

The beaches and beach clubs of Mykonos

A day on a Greek island mainly means visiting some great beaches! On Mykonos, there are excellent beaches you can explore, perfect for spending some time relaxing or partying.

One of the most frequented beaches in Mykonos is Paradise Beach. This lively beach offers a small free area where you won’t find amenities and a bigger section with many bars to rent umbrellas and sun loungers.

Paradise Beach is lined with lively beach clubs playing music from the early afternoon into the night, turning into real nightclubs, like the ‘ Tropicana ‘, which is also one of the most affordable.

With a reputation as the place to party on Mykonos, Super Paradise Beach is located in a small bay surrounded by beautiful hills, blue waters, and golden sand. The beach boasts several beach clubs popular for throwing iconic parties at night.

During the morning, the area is rather tranquil, but as the afternoon sets in, it turns into a lively spot thanks to the many beach clubs playing great beats at high volume – and the party doesn’t stop until sunrise!

Among the top beach clubs to visit is Super Paradise Beach Club, with an elegant design and top-quality amenities and services, including a cocktail bar, a shisha bar, a restaurant serving a fusion menu, and hardcore nightly DJ sets. We also love Jackie O’s .

Not far from Paradise Beach, you will find Platis Gialos. The beach is wide, with several beach clubs offering all the comforts, from sunbeds to restaurants to water sports amenities. Platis Gialos also has a small area where you can sunbathe free of charge as there aren’t umbrellas and chairs to rent.

Another wonderful beach to visit is Ornos Beach, located in the namesake village on the southwest side of Mykonos. A small bay with white sand and a dreamy transparent-blue sea, Ornos Beach is sheltered from the wind, which makes it particularly family-friendly.

Easily reached by bus or water taxi from Mykonos Town, it’s one of the busiest beaches on the island during the summer season. At Ornos Beach, you will find every possible service: fully equipped beach resorts, lively beach bars where you can enjoy colorful cocktails, and delicious restaurants where you can taste Greek cuisine.

Spending one night in Mykonos?

Perhaps you’ve flown direct to Mykonos and your plan is to head from Mykonos straight to islands like Tinos , Syros or others in the Cyclades you may want, or need, to spend the night before boarding your ferry the next day.

If that’s the case we recommend spending the night in Mykonos Town. It can be quite charming at night when the day trippers have left, and there are some great dining options such as Remezzo on the Old Harbour or sunset drinks at Little Venice or 180 Degrees Sunset bar are really quite incredible.

Our favorite boutique hotel is Harmony Boutique Hotel , a solid 4-star option overlooking the harbour. Its good value too, for Mykonos, and has a lovely pool.

She Mykonos is another option we like as it has great views, is walking distance into the old town but it is also easy to get parking there too.

With its iconic Cycladic windmills, narrow winding streets, and stunning sea views, Mykonos is one Greek destination you won’t want to miss off your next Mediterranean adventure. Even if you only have a limited time on Mykonos, this is one Greek Island that’s sure to leave enough of an impression to last a lifetime. Here’s a one day in Mykonos itinerary you’ll want to steal!

One Week Island Hopping in Greece: Travel itinerary, where to go, when to visit and how to see as many of the Cyclades Islands in Southern Europe!

What is Mykonos known for?

Is one day enough time in mykonos, explore mykonos town (the chora), enjoy a traditional greek lunch, relax on a mykonos beach, head out to sea on a day trip to delos, windmills & little venice, things to know before visiting mykonos, enjoyed reading this perfect one day in mykonos itinerary pin it now, read it again later:.

Mykonos is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea and is famous for its picturesque white-washed buildings, beautiful beaches, cosmopolitan nightlife, and rich history and culture. It is known for its crystal-clear waters, soft white sand, and vibrant beach parties on beaches like Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, and Elia Beach.

Mykonos is also renowned for its vibrant and cosmopolitan nightlife, with many clubs, bars, and restaurants catering to every taste and preference. Mykonos is also considered to be one of the most romantic places to visit in Greece and is popular among those who are planning a honeymoon trip to Greece .

A picturesque neighborhood in Mykonos Town known as Little Venice is also famous for its colorful houses and restaurants built right on the waterfront. It’s a popular spot for sunset-watching and is often compared to the Italian city of Venice.

Mykonos is also known for its connections to Greek mythology. According to legend, the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules, and it was also the site of a famous battle between Zeus and Titans.

The answer as to whether a day is enough time to explore Mykonos depends entirely on what kind of traveller you are and the kind of things you enjoy doing.

With this being said, Mykonos is a fairly small island and many of the island’s main attractions are focused around a rather small area that can easily be seen over the course of a day. As such, while at least two or three days on Mykonos would be preferable, one day is enough time to at least get a taste of Mykonos.

Here's your ultimate guide for how to spend one magical day in Mykonos, a sample travel itinerary for day trips from Mykonos and things to do on the island in Greece

How to spend a morning in Mykonos

Thanks to its ever-increasing popularity, Mykonos town is ever-busy and so your best bet for exploring the town without the crowds is to go as early in the day as possible.

This means staying in a hotel nearby ( check the best rates and availability here ) , or simply waking up early so as to snap your photos and soak up up the town’s ambience.

Pedestrian-only streets meander through white-washed buildings. Lose yourself a little in the place and allow your feet to wander where they will. Many of the houses look similar and the narrow winding streets are confusing.

It’s fairly easy to get a little lost! And after all, this is how you’ll easily discover some of the best secrets of Mykonos- just don’t make the mistake of losing yourself so much that you forget to discover Mykonos’ top attractions!

The Chora street in Mykonos Island, Greece

Highlights of Mykonos town (which is also simply known as ‘the Chora’) include plenty of historic old churches. Characterised by their small rooftop crosses and climbing bougainvillaea, there are a staggering 600- 800 churches, monasteries, and chapels on the island!

Some of the more interesting churches in the Chora include the 17th-century Paraportiani Orthodox Church complex, which comprises of five interlinking white-washed churches, and the waterside Agios Charalambos.

Throughout the town, there’s also a smattering of small boutiques and shops, though it’s worth noting that these are often pricier than on nearby islands on account of the fact that the island is one of the most popular Greek islands. Lastly, you should note that Mykonos town is home to some of the most Instagrammable places in Mykonos.

How to spend an afternoon in Mykonos

There is perhaps no cuisine quite as delicious to be found in this part of the world than that of Greek food. Think sea-inspired dishes, drizzled in olive oil, and scented with the smell of fresh-from-the-vine tomatoes. In typical Greek style, enjoy a lazy lunch in the early afternoon, with all the trimmings.

Delights you must make sure to sample while in Greece include crumbling feta, stuffed vine leaves, and perfectly flavoured olives. Even if you’re not a meat or fish eater, you’ll soon find that there are plenty of vegetable-inspired dishes and delicious sweets to sample.

Post-lunch, take yourself to one of the many beautiful beaches that wrap themselves around the island. In fact, Mykonos has 25 beaches in total pristine beaches, meaning that there’s no shortage of sandy getaways from which to select.

With its golden sand and six-kilometre stretch, Super Paradise Beach is famous the world over. Once there you can laze on a lounger, sip on cocktails, or paddle in the water. Alternatively, Platis Gialos is well-known for its sparkling clear waters and sandy stretch where you can rent yourself a parasol to lie under.

Sunny day on Super Paradise beach in Mykonos

Later on in the afternoon, it’s time to take to the water. If you’re a history buff, then consider taking a short day trip to Delos like this one to uncover the secrets behind the Ancient Greek monuments that are to be found scattered around the island.

Referred to by names such as ‘the island of light’ and ‘the sacred island,’ this UNESCO world heritage site is alleged to be the mythical birthplace of Apollo. There’s also an informative museum on the island where you can learn even more about Delos. For a morning tour check here , and for an evening tour to Delos check here .

Even if you’re not greatly interested by history, a boat trip out on the water is an absolute must. For example, this Yacht Cruise to Rhenia Island & Guided Tour of Delos will take you to the secret island of Rhenia, a paradise of a place that’s only accessible via boat.

How to spend an evening in Mykonos

Start your evening on the island off the right way by heading up to the 16th-century Kato Mili  windmills of Mykonos . Though these mills are no longer in use today, once upon a time the strong winds of the Cycladic islands was harnessed by the Venetians to ground grain. Today, there are 16 such windmills still remaining on Mykonos island, five of which can be found above the Chora.

Mykonos Windmills: History, Little Venice & How to Visit! A quick guide to seeing some of the best things on the island of Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

From the vantage point of the windmills, it’s easy to enjoy the stilted houses of ‘Little Venice’. With their colourful façades, made all the prettier by being illuminated by the last rays of the dying sun, this district of Mykonos town is filled with bars and restaurants, perfect for mooching around or dancing the night away!

Post-dark, the island really comes to life. Unlike Oia of Santorini or the smaller island like Paros and Milos , Mykonos is well-known for its party scene. Head to a local bar to enjoy a local tipple; beers are pretty popular and though Greece is not famous for its wine, it’s still easy enough to drink…

Cruising the Aegean with Celestyal Cruises: A Complete Review of seven days in Greece

If you’re looking to enjoy the best of Mykonos in one day as part of a guided excursion, then there are options to do this. For example, this Half-Day City Walking Tour and Island Bus Tour includes a guided walk around Mykonos old town, as well as a bus visit to some of the hidden gems of Mykonos like little villages and breathtaking beaches.

A firm favourite of travellers and locals alike all year round, there are still times when it’s better to visit Mykonos. For example, if you want to avoid peak season (which means peak prices, oodles of tourists, and scorching sun) , then don’t visit Mykonos in July or August.

Instead, April, May, and October are the best times to go to Mykonos. The weather is still great, the prices for visiting are lower, and you’ll still be able to enjoy long and lazy days exploring all that this magical island has to offer.

You will surely not be disappointed should you opt to visit Greece, though there are a number of things to consider while planning your trip, such as the best time of the year to visit and other travel considerations. Check out our guide to the best of Greece tips for more information and inspiration!

Mykonos Windmills: History, Little Venice & How to Visit! A quick guide to seeing some of the best things on the island of Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

Though Greek is the language spoken on the island, you’ll soon enough discover that many people speak great Eglish. However, as is the case with anyone going abroad, it’s only polite to learn a few words of the local language. I recommend starting with ‘please,’ ‘hello,’ ‘sorry,’ and ‘thank you.’ Pick up a simple Greek phrasebook like this one to get you started.

Next, as a result of Mykonos’ ever-growing popularity, the best places to stay often sell out fast. You’ll soon discover that this island is much more expensive than many of its neighbouring isles, with clothing, taxis, and even hotels costing much more.

As such, I highly recommend booking your place to stay as soon as you have your travel dates confirmed, so as to get the best deal. Check the best Mykonos accommodation rates here.

Best Greek Cooking Class in Mykonos

Teta will show you how to make delicious traditional Greek food in her Mykonos Cooking Class .

The 11 Best Tours & Things To Do in Mykonos 1. Mykonos Cooking Class (Traditional Greek Food) This is an absolutely wonderful Greek cooking class: fun, informative, great food. And the wine flows freely. It lasts a little less than 6 hours and starts at 10am or 4pm with free transfer from your hotel or the cruise port. Highly recommended. If you only do one organized activity in Mykonos, make it this one. (It’s rare for kids to do the class but when they do they have a blast.) 2. Sunset Sailing Cruise Awesome Mykonos boat tour with swimming, food, and unlimited drinks. Lots of swimming and snorkeling. Good fun. 3. Original Morning Delos Guided Tour After a 45-minute boat ride to Delos , explore the ancient island with a fully accredited guide. Delos (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of the best-preserved and most important historical sites in Greece and the best day trip from Mykonos. If you’re interested in visiting Delos, we recommend taking a guided tour; there are loads of ruins, but few signs, so it can be difficult to know what you’re looking at without a guide. 4. Delos & Rhenia Islands Boat Trip Tour the ancient island of Delos (entrance fee not included) then swim, snorkel, and sunbathe from the yacht and along the coast of the uninhabited island of Rhenia. BBQ meal and unlimited drinks included. 5. Catamaran Cruise with 3-Course Meal A super fun way to spend a day out on the water. Lots to eat and drink (and the food is surprisingly good quality). Lie on the deck, swim, snorkel, or sight-see as you make your way around the Mykonos coastline or to the island of Rhenia (depending on win, weather, and guest preference). This one is a little expensive, but worth it for the small group size and luxury service. Note : Both of the previous boat tours get fully booked from late June to early September. If that’s the case, the Full-Day Mykonos Catamaran Cruise is an excellent alternative – it’s a little more expensive but the food is also better. 6. Highlights of Mykonos: Half-Day Tour Starts with a walking tour of Mykonos Town and then visits the best sights, small villages (like Ano Mera above), and small hidden churches all over the island. 7. Mykonos Hiking Adventure This photo is from a helicopter tour I took of Mykonos (awesome but expensive) and I thought the aerial view gave a good overview of the Mykonos landscape. Beautiful beaches backed by rolling countryside with a mix of green farmland and trail-crossed steppes. Which all makes for a great hike. The hike ends with a swim at a beach. Ippos horseback riding is another great way to see the Mykonos countryside. 8. Yummy Pedals Bike Tour Discover the rugged landscape of Mykonos’ interior on a standard bike or e-bike. Offering seven different tour routes to suit all experience levels and varying interests, whether leisure, romance, adventure, or challening. Casual cyclists can enjoy rural back roads, stopping at cultural sites, learning about traditional life, and finishing at the beach for a picnic and underwater photo shoot. More experienced cyclists can opt for a scenic bike ride up the mountain peaks as high as the wind turbines for panoramic views over the island’s north coast. Private, bespoke tours can be arranged on request. 9. Wine and Farm Tour Daily wine tours in English (or French, on request) are on offer at this historic vineyard dating to the 19th-century, when it supplied wine for a local monastery. Guests of this family-owned homestead will learn about biodynamic cultivation and local winemaking customs, while sampling all four types of wines produced onsite. Visit during the fall harvest, and take the opportunity to stomp grapes in the traditional way. Food pairings can be added. This kid-friendly tour also includes visiting and interacting with the farm animals, including donkeys, sheep, and goats. Tours of the farm and vineyard are free; tastings and food pairings are additional. 10. Mosaic Workshop Mosaic artist Irene Syrianou grew up on sacred Delos Island and worked there for ten years, familiarizing herself with the ancient mosaics of the archaeological site while honing her own techniques. In her private and group workshops, she instructs students in replicating the mosaics of antiquity or creating their own modern works. Workshops take place in Manto Garden or in her studio space and can range from an hour or two up to a multi-day seminar. All ages and experience levels welcome. 11. Mykonos Farmers Cheese and Cooking Class Cheesemaking, cheese tasting, and cooking classes are available at this locally-owned dairy in Agios Lazaros, a short drive from Mykonos Town. The dairy makes a variety of regional cheeses only found in Mykonos and the Cyclades, along with more familiar flavors and rich Greek yogurt. Cooking and cheesemaking classes include a tour of the facilities and sampling the wares. Hands-on workshops run for about two hours and are open to beginning and advanced cooks, ages 14 and older.

The Best Free Thing To Do in Mykonos Mykonos Beach Walk Walk from Platis Gialos Beach to Paradise Beach , making stops at beach bars and restaurants along the way. You’ll pass Agia Anna and Paraga beaches and several other small swimming coves. Super fun and free! (Besides what you spend on food and drinks, of course.) If you’re staying in Mykonos Town, take the bus to Platis Gialos and then start walking along the beach towards the east (if you’re facing the water, walk to your left). There are several great places to eat along the walk. If you hike straight to Paradise Beach it will take about an hour (without stops). Then bus back from Paradise to Mykonos Town or take the water taxi back to Platis Gialos or Ornos (my personal favorite).

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave Author Bio.

Hi Dave! Loving this blog! I have a question about the Mykonos beach walk – we’re very interested in stopping along the way as you suggest but wondering what that’s like summer of 2021 specifically when everywhere is reservations only. Is that true of even just grabbing a drink along the walk? And if so and you had to choose only one to reserve and stay at – which one or which area would it be? We’re not getting much response when messaging the beach clubs directly. Thanks!

' src=

Reservations are strongly recommended at least during July/August and a pretty good idea in June/early September. It’s incredibly busy this season pretty much everywhere in the Cyclades, but even in June and early September, it can be hard to get a sunbed/umbrella set at the better beach clubs. But if you’re only going to drink and don’t need a lounge set, then it’s all good. You can get a drink pretty much anywhere no matter how busy, and just lay your towel out on the sand. Especially this year, you can get cocktails to go from almost all bars and restaurants on the island.

' src=

Hello Dave, since you have been to both Mykonos and Santorini where would you recommend doing a boat tour more? I don’t want to do a boat tour in both cities. I will be spending 5 days in each and am worried there will be less to do in Santorini–is it better to do a boat tour there? Mykonos seems like there will be a lot more partying/beaches to enjoy. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks!

A Santorini boat tour will be far more unique and awe-inspiring with the views of the caldera and cliffs. In Mykonos it will be more fun and relaxing. But not sure I agree with your premise: Santorini has far more to do than Mykonos – wine tours and wineries, hikes, historical sites, museums, volcano visits, jet ski tours. Mykonos has the beach and nightlife (which are great) and not much else.

' src=

The “Small Yacht Cruise to Delos & Rhenia Islands” appears to not be taking reservations due to availability (I wasn’t even able to put in my dates, seems to be a blanket statement on their site.) Other than the two you also suggest on this page, is there another similiar tour to this one that you’d recommend? I’m going with my mother (in her 60s) and my 8yo daughter – in case that makes a difference in what you recommend.

You’re probably just a little too early. Most tours should be online and ready to book by late January or early February.

' src=

Do you know of a good scuba diving course/tour in Mykonos for beginners/intermediate? We would like to visit the best scuba dive spots around Mykonos for a reasonable price.

Mykonos PADI Scuba Diving does a two-hour scuba course in Mykonos .

' src=

Are the paths etc okay for wheelchairs?

If you mean the paths along the coast between the beaches, then no, I wouldn’t say they’re wheelchair-accessible. If you mean the lanes and alleys of Mykonos Town, then yes, I think they should be “ok” for travelers in wheelchairs (though not ideal by any means).

' src=

Hello. If my daughter and I do the Mykonos cooking class, do you have any ideas for my adult son and husband? I’m also wondering if they would be able to pay and join us for lunch? Thank you for your expert advice!

They could do the tour to Delos. Or, if not a tour, walk from Psarou to Paradise Beach along the coast.

' src=

Thanks for your website, such great info. We were planning on having a 6-day Honeymoon, taking in 3 days in Santorini & 3 in Mykonos (Town). We were hoping to go in September but due to personal circumstances that are no longer possible, so we would be looking at something like the 10th to 16th of October. I am concerned though that this will be too late in the season, & we’ll struggle for restaurants & bars, especially in Mykonos.

Can you advise if we will struggle for eating & drinking at this time? We obviously don’t expect it to be full-on party mode but would like some sort of vibe for going out & having a couple of drinks at night (or even places that are at least open).

Santorini will be busy and active, with everything open – no problem there. Mykonos will be slower for sure. A few places will have started to close for the winter but most will be open. Nightlife will be subdued but there’ll definitely be places open to go for a drink and encounter some other travelers. There will definitely be plenty of open restaurants – so I would not worry on that front.

' src=

What is the best way to get to Santorini from Mykonos? Just want a day of exploring? There were no available flights during the time we are there to fly there and back.

Ferry is the best way to get to Santorini from Mykonos. There are many ferries every day in summer. But it’s very hard, if not impossible, to do it as a day trip. You’ll need to stay overnight.

' src=

Hi Dave, We have rented a villa near Mykonos town. Most transportation mentioned is a bus or boat, is it reasonable to expect taxi service? Thank You!

Yes, there are taxis but not a lot. During busy times it can be very hard to secure a taxi.

' src=

Hi Dave, What are your thoughts on boat tours around Mykonos being really rocky due to the winds? I’ve read on other sites that the waters can be very rough and Tours will often go out despite rough seas. Only have 3.5 days in Mykonos so I’m nervous to gamble with a boat tour that could ruin a day. Love your cooking class recommendation, just having a hard time getting my fiancé onboard with that. Thanks in advance!

Yes, the waters can get rough. Not much you can do about that except hope for the best. The cooking class is great fun.

' src=

Tipping, how does this work for a tour? If we booked the 6 hours BBQ catamaran tour per couple it would come to $491, should we tip 20% ~$100?

Thanks! Kelly

Yeah, if that’s in your budget then that’s great. Tourism workers in Greece make very little so it would be appreciated.

' src=

Hi Dave – Is it warm enough to swim at the end of April / beginning of May?

Water will be cool but if the weather’s nice, yes, people will be hopping in for brief plunges in the sea. By mid/late May it’s usually much warmer for swimming.

' src=

Cooking Class in Mykonos, do you know if they are able to accommodate vegetarians? Amit

Yes, definitely. Many of the best Greek dishes are vegetarian. I’d drop them a note (in reply to the confirmation email that you’ll get) a few days before your date telling them you’re vegetarian but won’t make much difference in either case.

' src=

Thanks Dave! Why is it that you prefer renting a car over an ATV?

It’s safer. It’s more comfortable. You can talk to each other instead of yelling over the wind. But just my preference, your experience may differ.

My husband and I will be in Mykonos and Santorini at the end of August. We definitely want to get some ATV’s and do some exploring on our own. Do you have any suggestions for places we should rent from on both islands? Is it necessary to book these in advance of our trip?

No need to book ATVs in advance. Where to get them depends on the town you’re staying in but there should be a service/company nearby that can arrange something. BTW, I much prefer renting a car but that’s up to you.

' src=

My family together with my sister’s have booked a 10 day trip to Mykonos mid August. I’m slightly annoyed at my sloppy planning and regret not booking a few days first in santorini. There do not appear to be any day trips there from Mykonos unless the ferry companies have different schedules during the summer months? Do you have any fun suggestions during our stay? Our kids ages range from 22-13. Helen Pope

The cooking course (see above) and boat tours to Delos or Rhenia islands are at the top of the list. I would consider taking an overnight trip to Santorini. Keep your hotel in Mykonos and just take a small backpack or two. Stay at a cheap hotel in Fira and you’ll get 30 hours to explore Santorini. You are wasting the one night hotel in Mykonos but a lot cheaper than the plane tickets to get back to Santorini on a different trip.

' src=

Can you recommend the best transportation to get from Athens airport to Athens Diamond homtel at 9:00pm and returning to the airport to catch a flight at 7:00 am.

The easiest is a taxi. The cheapest is the metro (you’ll want the Monastiraki station which is about a 5 to 8 minute walk from your hotel). But for your morning flight you’ll need to take a taxi (or the airport bus from Syntagma Square) as the metro won’t be running in time to make your flight.

' src=

Your restaurant recommendations for Santorini were very helpful. I went to several of your recommended restaurants and they were great. I am going to Mykonos in 2 days. Any restaurant recommendations for Mykonos? Thank you!! Karl Smith

I have a list of the best Mykonos restaurants on my Mykonos hotel page .

' src=

We would be spending about 3.5 days in Mykonos late May. We are considering the Jeep tour and South Coast cruise. Is it worth it to go for 2 full day tours or choose one? Which and what would you recommend?

Thank you! Perrine

They are very different (one on a boat, one in a jeep) and have little or no overlap. Doing both is reasonable. If I could only do one, it would the south coast boat cruise.

' src=

Hi Dave~ your site is a wealth of information! My husband and I are flying into Athens 6/25-7/2. Per your suggestion we will spend the first few nights at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Need to ferry over to Mykonos for a work meeting for a few days. After researching, I was thinking of ferrying over from Piraeus and back into Rafina since it is closer to the airport. I’m a little nervous that the earliest ferry back on 7/2 is at 11:40. We have a 5:30 flight the same day. Is that cutting it close? Weather/strikes etc.. I would hate to miss our departure home. We could come back the eve of 7/1 and spend one additional night in Athens (shortening MYK by a little bit) to give us wiggle room. If so, should we stay somewhere closer to the airport to get a different vibe? Or would you go back into Athens and head to the airport the next day. Or do you think we are OK on that 11:40- 14:15 ferry? Would love to know how you wold handle getting back to mainland, your input. Shaun Hammons

That connection time would be too tight for my tastes. Could you make? Yes, certainly. But it doesn’t take much for a SeaJet ferry to be late by 90 minutes and that’s all it would take for you to miss your flight. I would ferry to Piraeus the night before and stay somewhere in the Plaka for a final night (lots of great places to eat in the area). There is nothing out by the airport so definitely do not stay there as you’ll almost have an evening and a good half-day to see and do stuff in Athens. (Or you can fly from Mykonos to Athens and have an extra night in Mykonos – there are afternoon flights that get to Athens at 12:25pm or 3:10pm.)

What is the best tour of Mykonos Town? Is it worth taking a tour or can we explore Mykonos Town on our own?

It’s easy to walk around Mykonos Town on your own and see the sights – but a tour always offer a different level of understanding and history. People almost never regret taking a tour and I highly recommended them. The Mykonos Town and Island Tour goes through Mykonos Town and Ano Mera (the second largest village on Mykonos) as well as a few other stops. It’s well worth the 4 hours.

' src=

Hey Dave, I am going to be visiting in mid may. We have kept 4 days in Mykonos. Any suggestions on a day trip to islands nearby?

Delos (greek history) and Rhenia (beaches and swimming) are the two best day trips from Mykonos. The bigger islands (Naxos, Paros, Santorini) are difficult to make work for a day trip – especially in May when ferries are not as frequent as summer.

' src=

Hi Dave, Do you recommend booking at boat tour in Mykonos ahead of time? We will be in Mykonos for four days during the middle of May. Thank you! Alex

If you’re on the fence then wait and see if that’s how you want to spend your time once you’re on the island. If you’re certain there’s something you want to do (e.g. Delos) then book as early as possible.

' src=

Hi Dave, I have found your website so helpful for planning our upcoming trip. It seems that the link for the “Full day small yacht cruise to Rhenia Island” on the Mykonos day tours page is not working. Could you direct me to that tour?

Thanks so much! Megan Reese

I fixed the link. Thanks!

' src=

Your sharing have indeed been so helpful towards my planning to Greece. I will be travelling at the end of October. Due to my limited travelling time, I would like to catch the best of all in Greece.

Between Mykonos, Crete, & Zakynthos, which is best? Which will be a better choice? I intend to stay 2 nights in either one of the above.

Mykonos and Crete are the best choices. Mykonos is small and thus the best choice for a quick 2 night trip. But, it will be very quiet by the end of October. Not quite “completely dead” but not lively by any stretch. Chania on Crete will still have plenty going on and has a great array of restaurants that should all still be open. It doesn’t quite give the idyllic greek-island feel as it’s a medium-sized town on a large island – but it’s great nonetheless.

Do you need to do a tour to get to the best Mykonos Beaches (quiet and secluded beaches) or just rent a car and do a self-tour?

To get to the quiet and remote ones, yes, a tour is good – and a boat tour better. But for the most popular ones close to Mykonos Town a rental car is fine for getting around. In fact, bus is the best as you can take it to Psarou or Platys Gialos then walk to Paranga and Paradise beaches along a coastal path that is both beautiful and dotted with little swimming spots. The tours are fun though.

A sea change from Mykonos: five easy day trips

Man diving into clear water at Paros, Greece

Take a dive into the richness of the Greek islands just outside of Mykonos © Adrienne Pitts / Lonely Planet

Experience the vastly different personalities of these five lovely islands close to Mykonos — all easy to reach in a day trip. Hop a local boat to reach the world-class ancient site on Delos. Or catch a larger fast ferry for the stark beauty and sensational food of Tinos, the classic charms and modern bustle of Syros, the great circular drive of Paros or the wide-ranging sights of Naxos.

None are further than 90 minutes from Mykonos and most are under an hour each way. It’s like visiting an entirely different — and fascinating — destination for the simple price of a ferry ticket.

A woman walking through ruins at an archaeological site in Delos

Why go? A sacred ancient island minutes from Mykonos

One of the most sacred ancient Greek sites lies at the center of the circling Cyclades. Delos is the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, the brother and sister twins of the big gun Zeus and his bride Leto. Both were avid hunters and it’s easy to imagine them prowling the hills of this tiny and arid island with their bows in search of game.

Today Delos'  importance as a vital archeological site has given it Unesco World Heritage status. Uninhabited (and closed to overnight visitors), the island features the remains of temples, treasuries, mosaics and more, dating back as far as the 3rd millennium BC — making it one of the very oldest sites in the Mediterranean. Anyone with even a passing interest in ancient Greece shouldn’t miss Delos (that it’s the tranquil antidote to the frenetic fun of Mykonos is a bonus).

How to get to Delos:

Boats from Hora make the quick journey four times daily in summer, less often other times. Tour guides for hire meet incoming boats; it’s also possible to book a visit through the many Mykonos tour companies.

Tinos island, Greece

Why go? Crowd-free natural beauty with fantastic locally produced food and art

Hidden bays, terraced valleys and cloud-shrouded peaks give Tinos a natural beauty that’s in direct contrast to arid Mykonos. Dozens of villages accented with traditional buildings made from the local marble invite exploration of the island’s sinuous roads, so it’s worth renting a car. Among the rewards are tavernas serving excellent food made from the produce of Tinos’s rich farms and fisheries.

The local marble is also put to good use by scores of local artisans, especially in the sculptors’ village of Pyrgos. And in the main town of Hora, the hallowed Church of the Annunciation is a pilgrimage site for the devout who come to visit its miraculous icon.

How to get to Tinos:

In peak season, fast ferries make the roughly 30-minute run to Tinos several times daily from Mykonos. The main town and port on both islands is named Hora, so keep this in mind to avoid confusion when checking schedules. You can rent cars for the day in the port, but be sure to book ahead.

Why go? Check out the capital of the Cyclades and also hit its beaches

Pint-sized Syros (it’s just under 10mi/16km-long) is outsize in importance as its main town of Ermoupoli is the administrative center of the Cyclades. Meanwhile, the quiet countryside has a rural feel that’s ripe for a grammable shot of a goatherd corralling his charges or of tiny roads winding down to sparsely peopled beaches.

In the capital, there’s a noticeable buzz and it’s been that way since the 19th century when Syros was a Greek Orthodox refuge from Turkish rule. The engrossing Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli preserves a time when it was also the center of Greek shipbuilding. Stop into a portside taverna for excellent fare and watch modern Greek life far removed from the tourism of Mykonos.

How to get to Syros:

One to three ferries a day link Mykonos and Ermoupoli with a journey time of about an hour. You can rent a car on arrival, although exploring just the capital can fill a day and be accomplished on foot.

A man is lying on a sandy beach reading a book as the sun sets in Paros

Why go? Hit the road and explore far-flung villages from the mountainsides to the seashore

Long considered something of a tourism sleeper, Paros is rapidly moving up visitors’ popularity charts. Sure, the booming port town of Parikia has its appeal, but to really get a flavor for this large, varied island, head out to the villages you can visit on a superb half-day (or more) driving loop of the island.

Stroll through towns like Alyki and Naoussa and stop at affordable, excellent seafood tavernas. In between, hit the surrounding soft-sand beaches and explore headlands and rock formations. Then, head to the hills for the lovely village of Lefkes with artisan shops and sweeping views — exquisite at sunset.

How to get to Paros:

Paros is easily reached from Mykonos by fast f erry several times a day in peak season in under an hour. Reserve a car in advance in the port town of Parikia. There’s a frequent car ferry for the 10-minute trip to the wonderful adjoining island of Antiparos .

A black woman is sitting outside at a table in the sunshine, smiling and enjoying a drink

Why go? Exploring grand rural expanses, ancient temples and untrammeled beaches

If Mykonos leaves you wishing for something, well, larger, you’ll find it on Naxos , the largest of the Cycladic islands. Greener than most of its neighbors, the island has farms producing rich harvests of olives (of course!), oranges, lemons, figs, grapes and citron. (The latter tastes pretty rough when eaten fresh, so stick to the treats of the local alchemists who turn the leaves into a delicious liqueur called kitron.) Excellent tavernas scattered about the island put Naxos’s bounty to good use.

Don’t miss the perfectly positioned Temple of Demeter as you climb into the mountains and seek out massive marble statues — Naxian marble is world-famous — that have been left in the fields.

On the island’s east side, quiet country roads lead to even quieter beaches.  And, the main town of — you guessed it — Hora (otherwise known as Naxos) makes for a good wander before your ferry back to Mykonos.

How to get to Naxos:

Fast ferries in summer serve Hora from Mykonos’s Hora (!) with journey times of 40-90 minutes. Your own wheels are a must for exploring its vast hinterlands; reserve in advance.

#2. Mykonos to Paros Day Trip

If you are looking for a charming island close to Mykonos, check out Paros. It is a small island and pretty quiet compared to Mykonos.

Paros has charming villages and stunning beaches, and it is just a short ferry ride away from Mykonos .

*Ideally, you will rent a car to fully explore the island. Otherwise, you will need to rely on the buses or water taxis to get around.

Ferry Details:

Mykonos to paros.

  • First trip: 8:15
  • Last trip: 16:35
  • Duration: 57m
  • Ticket Price: 36.00 € – 59.70 €

Paros to Mykonos

  • First trip: 09:50
  • Last trip: 19:10
  • Duration: 1h
  • Ticket Cost: 36.00 € – 59.70 €

Arrive in the beautiful village of Naoussa, the more picturesque side of the island. It is a fishing village with a maze of narrow streets, white-washed houses, and vibrant bougainvillea. It’s the perfect spot for those Instagram-worthy shots!

After wandering Naoussa, head to the Panagia Ekatontapiliani , also known as the Church of 100 Doors, in Parikia.

You will need to either take the bus or drive if you have rented a car. This historic church is a must-see for its stunning Byzantine architecture.

Golden hour at a Paros seaside: The warm glow of sunset illuminates the rocky shore and the calm sea, with the traditional whitewashed town in the background reflecting the last sunbeams.

For lunch, treat yourself to some authentic Greek food at a local taverna, like Mythos Plaza Restaurant .

Paros is known for its fresh seafood, so don’t miss out on dishes like grilled octopus or calamari.

In the afternoon, it’s beach time. Little Paradise is ideal for sunbathing and relaxing. There are also the serene shores of Kolymbithres Beach , famous for its unique rock formations.

Enjoy your time here, just don’t miss the last boat back to Mykonos at 19:10!

#3. Mykonos to Naxos Day Trip

One of my favorite Greek Islands to explore easily from Mykonos is Naxos! I’ve been there a few times!

It’s bigger than Paros and with lots to see and around the port. But if you want to explore the island fully, you can do this bus tour that takes you to the idyllic villages on the island.

Mykonos to Naxos

  • Average duration: 30m
  • Price range: 36.00 € – 57.70 €

Naxos to Mykonos

  • First trip: 09:00
  • Last trip: 15:30

Once you dock in Naxos, you’ll be in the Naxos Town. It’s full of ancient history and iconic Portara (the ancient temple gate), offering the perfect starting point for your exploration.

Wander through the old town’s labyrinth of narrow streets, lined with quaint shops and cafes. Don’t miss my favorite handmade pottery shop, Morfes .

If you’re into Greek mythology, you’re in for a treat. According to legend, this is where Theseus abandoned Ariadne after she helped him escape the Labyrinth of Crete.

Silhouette of a modern, abstract sculpture resembling a standing figure against the backdrop of a soft sunset sky, with the calm sea stretching into the horizon and people milling about on the waterfront

For those with a love for the great outdoors, Naxos has a lot to offer. The island’s interior is lush and mountainous, perfect for a scenic drive or hike. I would recommend renting a car in Naxos at the port to see the many villages in Naxos .

Naxos has some amazing food – it’s a real treat for anyone who loves good eats! Make sure to grab a meal at Metaxi Mas , it’s one of the top spots there and totally worth it.

Pro tip: Try the local cheese, it’s a game-changer.

Post-lunch, you can either drive or take the bus to Agia Anna and hit the beach! Here you will find excellent water sports opportunities.

#4. Mykonos to Syros Day Trip

Another incredibly easy day trip from Mykonos is visiting the island of Syros!

Mykonos to Syros

  • First trip: 11:55
  • Last trip: 20:45
  • Average duration: 45m
  • Price range: 17.00 € – 39.00 €

Syros to Mykonos

  • First trip: 09:10
  • Last trip: 18:30

Once you land in Syros, the main attractions are walkable from the port. Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros (and the Cyclades), is a stunner with its neoclassical buildings and idyllic shopping streets.

Start by exploring the picturesque streets of Ermoupoli. It blends history and modernity, with cozy cafes and shops around every corner.

Check the hours, and make a visit to the Apollon Theatre , a mini replica of La Scala, is a must-visit!

For museum lovers, there is the Archaeological Museum with some cool artifacts.

A coastal view from above showing a curving seaside promenade in Syros, with houses built along the cliff edge overlooking the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea, and sunbathers enjoying the narrow beach below

If you are looking to get into the water, there is a swimming spot about a 15-minute walk from the center of town.

Or if you want to hit the beach you can take a taxi from the port (approx 12 euros each way) or take the bus to Delfini Beach . It’s a beach with clear waters and a laid-back vibe.

And let’s talk food – because, let’s face it, that’s half the fun of traveling!

Syros has some fabulous dining options. For an unforgettable meal, go to Mazi !

Don’t forget, the last ferry back to Mykonos is at 18:30!

#5. Mykonos to Delos Island Day Trip

If you love exploring an archaeological site, then making a quick day trip to the island of Delos is a no-brainer.

While you can visit the tiny island of Delos on your own, going on a tour is better.

If you aren’t interested in a tour, you can buy a ticket to Delos from the old port in Mykonos.

The price for the boat round trip is 20 euros and the admission to enter the site is 12 euros.

Ancient ruins on the island of Delos, Greece, with a row of intact marble columns standing in the foreground. Behind the archaeological remains, the landscape opens up to the blue sea and a rugged coastline under a clear sky

For just a little bit more you will get to go on a guided tour where you learn all about the history of the islands.

The ferry trip itself from Mykonos to Delos is only about 20-30 minutes. If it is a very windy day, the boat will not go.

Mykonos to Santorini Overnight Trip

In 2024, you can not make a day trip from Mykonos to Santorini. You can do an overnight trip. Perhaps someday it will be possible, but as of now the ferry schedules don’t support it.

Santorini is the most idyllic Island I have ever been to! I visited for the first time from Mykonos back in 2010 (yeah, I feel old).

I highly recommend you visit Santorini once in your life. Making the trip to Mykonos is doable, but you need to be prepared for the crowds and must plan accordingly.

If you want to avoid the madness, visit the Greek Islands in May , it will be warm with a lot fewer people.

Ferry Details: New Port in Mykonos

Mykonos to santorini.

  • Ferry Crossing Frequency: Every day
  • Final trip: 13:00
  • Duration: 2h 55m
  • Ticket Price Range: 67.00 € – 156.70 €

Santorini to Mykonos

  • Final trip: 14:15
  • Duration: 3h 1m

When you arrive at the port in Santorini you must have pre-booked a ride to take you to the town of Oia.

I urge you not to rely on getting a taxi. The amount of people at the port is overwhelming, and you don’t want to waste time.

I use Welcome Pickups, they are reliable and easy to book.

Get dropped off in Oia. It is the place famous for its iconic blue domes and whitewashed buildings, a photographer’s paradise. Soak in the views of the caldera.

Twilight over Santorini: A cascade of traditional white Cycladic houses with blue accents descends the cliffside toward the Aegean Sea, with the sky softly transitioning from pink to blue at dusk.

Next, you can take a bus from Oia to Fira ( bus schedule ) for lunch at a cliffside restaurant. The buses run every hour and take about 20 minutes.

A good choice of place to indulge in the island’s famous tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters) and fresh seafood is The Vine .

You need reservations, but you can get them online. You won’t believe the spectacular Aegean views seen from this spot.

If you want to hit the beach in the afternoon, go to Black Beach , those colorful shores are a must-see.

Traveling from Fira bus station to Perissa, Santorini is possible with regular buses connecting these towns. The bus costs 3€ and you want to have cash.

🚕 A taxi will cost you anywhere from 40€ to 50€ each way.

The trip typically takes around 30 minutes. Once in Perissa, a short 10-minute walk will lead you to the stunning Black Beach.

Wrap up your day with a stunning sunset in Imerovigli, often less crowded but just as beautiful as Oia.

The last ferry back to Mykonos usually leaves around 19:30 , but always double-check the latest schedule.

Santorini in a day might sound ambitious, but you came to the Greek Islands, soak it all in!

5 Tips On For The Best Time to Visit Mykonos

  • Visit in Late Spring or Early Autumn : The best times to visit Mykonos are May to early June and September to October. These months offer great weather with fewer crowds.
  • Avoid Peak Season : July and August are extremely busy. If you prefer fewer crowds and more reasonable prices, it’s best to avoid these months.
  • Check Cruise Ship Schedules : Cruise ships bring large numbers of visitors. Plan your activities on days when fewer ships are docked to avoid the crowds.
  • Plan Your Activities Wisely : Some popular attractions and beaches can get crowded. Plan to visit these early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
  • Book Accommodations in Advance : Especially if you’re traveling in the high season, book your stay well in advance to secure the best options.

Mykonos Seasonal Overview:

  • May to June : This period is ideal for visiting. The weather is warm, and the island buzzes with life, yet it’s not as crowded as in peak summer.
  • July to August : The busiest and hottest months. Expect crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • September to October : The weather is still pleasant, and the island is less crowded, making it a great time to visit.
  • Off-Peak (November to April) : Many facilities are closed, and the island is very quiet. It’s not the best time for typical tourist activities, but you can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the island.

Other Islands to Hop to After Mykonos

mykonos cruise day trip

While there aren’t any other islands ideal for day trips that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider hopping to a nearby island and staying a few days.

Consider visiting the island of Milos ! Under 3 hours away by direct ferry, Milos has a lot to offer.

Getting around the island of Milos is made easier by renting car , although there is bus public transport if you need it.

I can recommend staying at least 4 days in Milos to get a great overview of the island.

No. As of 2024, the ferry schedules do not make it possible for a day trip from Mykonos to Santorini.

One of the best islands to visit in one day from Mykonos is Tinos. These islands are very close and there are multiple ferry crossings in one day.

How to Visit Delos on a Day Trip from Mykonos

How to Visit Delos on a Day Trip from Mykonos

One of the best perks of a trip to Mykonos is its proximity to so many beautiful islands. Luckily, the closest island to Mykonos is also one of the most interesting and beautiful: the beautiful island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island of Delos ticks all the boxes for a perfect day trip from Mykonos. Frequent connections by ferry, a beautiful setting, a stunning and well-preserved set of ruins: a day trip to Delos from Mykonos is as easy as it is rewarding.

While it can be hard to peel yourself away from the beautiful Mykonos beaches, I really recommend you do. Delos offers an incredible insight into ancient Greek civilization at its peak, and taking a tour of Delos reveals the hints of what life was like back in Delos’ heyday, more than 2,000 years ago.

Visiting Delos was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Greece, and I’d put Delos as one of my top 5 archaeological sites in Greece for history lovers. It’s right up there with the Acropolis, the Oracle of Delphi, and Akrotiri as must-visit sites. And since it’s only a 30-minute boat ride to Delos from Mykonos, you’d be a fool to skip it.

Getting to Delos from Mykonos

Mykonos - Greece - Beach with turquoise water and three white windmills

Truly, planning a day trip to Delos from Mykonos couldn’t be simpler. Boat connections leave from Mykonos Town (Chora) multiple times a day.

A ferry with Delos Tours is the most common way to get to Delos from Mykonos, and it’s what I personally did and recommend because they have phenomenal tour guides.

I did this tour with Delos Tours, and my guide, Athena, was fantastic. She’s an archaeologist and historian as well as being a guide, so she was able to bring so many of the structure to life for us and give us an insight into what clues were left behind by this ancient civilization.

To get to the port where they leave to Delos, walk to the Delos Tours ticket office at the Delos port. This is about a 10-minute walk from the Old Port, or a 5-minute walk from the restaurants on the harbor.

Alternately, if you are visiting Mykonos on a cruise, you’ll be coming from the New Port. In this case, you should take the sea bus for only two euros all the way to the Delos departure area.

The Delos to Mykonos Ferry Timetable

mykonos cruise day trip

On Mondays , there is a ferry from Mykonos to Delos at 10 AM from May 2nd to October 31st, with a return ferry at 1:30 PM.

The Monday afternoon tour differs depending on the sunset time. From May 2nd to September 15, the ferry leaves at 5 PM and returns at 7:30 PM. From September 15 to September 30, the ferry leaves at 4:30 PM and returns at 7 PM.

From October 1 to October 14, the ferry leaves at 4 PM and comes back from Delos at 6:30 PM. From October 15 to October 31, the ferry leaves at 3:30 PM and returns at 6 PM.

mykonos cruise day trip

On Tuesdays through Sunday , the schedule has many more options for morning tours, all between May 2nd and October 31st. There are morning departures at 9 AM, 10 AM, and 11:30 AM, with returns at noon, 1:30 PM, and 3 PM respectively.

The evening tours are staggered and follow the same timeline as the Monday afternoon tours listed above.

How far is Delos from Mykonos?

The boat to Delos to Mykonos is blissfully short. It’s only 15 kilometers, and the boat takes only 30 minutes. The ride is absolutely beautiful!

Can you stay overnight on Delos?

You cannot – Delos is strictly an archaeological site, and there are no hotels or any capacity to stay on the island overnight.

How much is the ferry from Mykonos to Delos?

mykonos cruise day trip

The ferry costs 20 euros return, which does not include the 12 euro entrance fee, for a total of 32 euros.

I strongly recommend adding on a guide. For 50 euros, you get a return ticket, the entrance fee, and a roughly 2-hour guided tour of Delos. This is the half-day tour I booked: The Original Morning Delos Guided Tour. If you’d rather visit in the evening, you can check the Evening Tour offered by the same company.

Alternately, you can visit Delos as part of a full-day yacht sailing cruise which also includes Rhenia Island, so you can drink white wine, eat lunch, relax in the sun, swim and snorkel with the provided equipment, and enjoy a two-hour guided tour of Delos Island. This is the yacht cruise I recommend if you have the time!

What to See When You Visit Delos Archaeological Site

The Delos Archaeological Site is pretty big and spread out. Going on a tour will ensure you see all the highlights, which is why I chose to do it that way. Here are the top 5 things you should keep an eye out for when you visit.

The Temples of Apollo. There are three temples which were dedicated to Apollo, which now stand largely in ruins. The statues from these temples have been moved to the inner museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Delos : Many of the statues you’ll find in Delos have been moved inside, and replicas now stand in their place to protect the originals from Delos’ strong winds.

mykonos cruise day trip

The Terrace of the Lions : This row of lion statues made of the finest Naxian marble is one of the most iconic sights of Delos. The originals have been moved into the museum to protect them from the elements, but replicas of the lions are placed where they originally stood for millennia.

mykonos cruise day trip

The House of Dionysus : Best known for its beautiful mosaic floor and the remains of plaster stucco wall paintings, the House of Dionysus is a wonderful insight into the lives of the extremely wealthy who lived on Delos many millennia ago.

The Odeon. The ancient theater of Delos has been damaged quite a bit over the centuries, but it’s an impressive site nonetheless.

5 Big Mistakes People Make When They Visit Delos

Not bringing sun and wind protection. Delos is an open archaeology site, with virtually no protection from the elements. You will want to bring, at the very least, a large bottle of water, a sun hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. At the same time, be sure to bring some sort of sweater or windbreaker in case the wind picks up, as Delos can get incredibly windy.

Not wearing the right shoes. Delos is rocky and unpaved. Unlike Akrotiri, which has a boardwalk around the whole perimeter and through the town, you are walking outdoors on uneven terrain the entire time at Delos. I recommend walking shoes like sneakers or a really sturdy pair of sandals. I do not recommend cute flats that you don’t want to get gravel in with every other step…

mykonos cruise day trip

Not going with a guide. While you can save some money by not going with a guide, I really don’t recommend skimping on this. Most of the interesting sites such as the Odeon and the House of Dionysus have very little information about them on placards, so you won’t really know what you are seeing.

A guide will help bring not only these important structures to life, but the everyday structures — the taverns, the houses, the fish markets, etc. – to give you the full imagining of what life on Delos would have been life.

mykonos cruise day trip

Stepping on the marble. There are many marble blocks strewn on the ground at Delos, which is incredibly soft and porous. Do not step on the marble, as you risk damaging it and wearing it down over time.

Not eating beforehand. Delos is strictly an archaeological site, so there’s really not much in the way of infrastructure. It’s just a ticket booth, a museum shop (which was closed when I went), and a bathroom with just two stalls. Be sure to eat beforehand — you can buy snacks on the boat or grab something to eat before you leave Mykonos harbor.

Pin This Guide to Visiting Delos from Mykonos Here

Planning to visit Mykonos, Greece? Make sure you make time for a day trip to Delos from Mykonos. Delos Island is an incredible UNESCO archaeological site, an ancient island full of history. Here are crucial things to know before you go from Mykonos to Delos on a day trip: one of the best things to do in Mykonos on your Greece itinerary.

5 Things to Bring with You to Greece

Greece - Crete - Heraklion - Old Venetian Harbor Luggage

If you’re planning a trip to Greece, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind. For more packing tips, check out our complete  Greece packing list.

–  A physical guidebook, in paper or on Kindle . We love  Lon ely  Planet  Greece  for this region and strongly recommend it to supplement blogs. Blogs are great, but a combination of a blog and a guidebook is key to having the best access to information easily at your fingertips.

–  A water bottle with a filter . We generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant! We recommend  the GRAYL water bottle  – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

–  Motion sickness pills . Mykonos roads are winding, especially around the coast. If you have a weak stomach as we do, save yourself and bring some  non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

–  Travel safety items . We think Athens is safe to travel, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Some people like to carry  money belts , but neither Stephanie or I use these. Instead, we both carry the same  PacSafe anti-theft backpack .

It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as it’s neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

I’m sure you’re aware that it’s a good idea to have  travel insurance  for traveling in Mykonos, Greece in general, or anywhere in the world!

Stephanie and I have both been paying customers of  World Nomads  for the last three years. We love the peace of mind it gives us in case of emergencies, accidents, illnesses, theft, or trip cancellation or disruption.

While Mykonos is safe, there’s always a risk inherent in everyday travel like theft or injury, so it’s better to play it safe.
