Liana Moore

Liana Moore is a third-culture kid with a hangover from those days that is a severe case of wanderlust. She is more comfortable driving the cliffs of Amalfi, Italy or the dirt roads of Costa Rica or attempting to decipher the street signs of Osaka, Japan than navigating the theme parks of Disney World. But she loves it all. She doesn't believe a vacation is complete without an adventure. Her husband and kids know well that "adventure" often is code for mishap or challenge and it usually results in a good story. They seek outdoor experiences whether in the mountains, on a beach or in the jungle of a tropical country. Her favorite vacation is... all the ones she hasn't yet taken, as well as those she plans on taking again. And, that list is so, so long. But she continues to extensively explore her home state of Colorado, spends lots of time wandering Texas, California, New Mexico, Costa Rica, Mexico, Norway and has even explored Kazakhstan.

I’ll admit, now that I’m an adult, I love the idea of having Thanksgiving somewhere away from home where I don’t have to do the cooking. It just takes so long and I’d much rather have someone else take care of it. #FlyAwayFriday

Those are some great ideas for Thanksgiving! This is the first year that I’ll be spending Thanksgiving in San Francisco with my boyfriend and his parents. I usually take the long weekend as an opportunity to travel. But I’m really excited to spend it in a real “family” situation. Although…. Colorado looks very tempting as well… #FlyAwayFriday

Things to Do on Thanksgiving Day

The winter season is just beginning in Breckenridge so spend your morning enjoying the great outdoors before your big feast. Snag a few early bird laps at Breckenridge Ski Resort (their opening day was November 9!) or hit groomed snowshoe trails at Breckenridge Nordic Center and try to spot some local wildlife.

The Frisco Adventure Park Tubing Hill and Nordic center are tentatively set to open on November 24, (perfect timing!) and the Turkey Day 5K is taking place in the town of Frisco. Where to Eat for Thanksgiving

If you’re craving a traditional Thanksgiving meal, many restaurants in town offer family-style meals for dine-in and take-out. A few of our favorites include Blue Stag Saloon , Blue River Bistro , Hearthstone and Sevens . Check each restaurant’s website for Thanksgiving-specific menus and be sure to plan ahead and make your reservations in advance!

And hey, if traditional Thanksgiving isn’t for you, grab a slice of pizza or tacos and margaritas—nobody’s judging!

The Rotary Club of Summit County in partnership with Keystone Resort is offering free dinner at Silverthorne Pavilion on Thanksgiving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Father Dyer Church is also offering free meals in Breckenridge from 4 to 7 p.m.

Whether you are looking for an adventurous getaway in the Rocky Mountains or a luxurious spa vacation, this small town in northwestern Colorado fits the bill. Glenwood Springs visitors can soak up some rays while horseback riding, whitewater rafting or hiking the popular Hanging Lake Trail. If you'd like to take the thrills up a notch, make time for Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, which features cave tours, an alpine coaster and more. The former home of the Ancestral Pueblo people, Mesa Verde National Park contains about 5,000 of America's best-preserved archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. First-time visitors should prioritize the famous Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Many of the sites can only be accessed by ranger-led tours that may involve quite a bit of walking, climbing and, in some cases, crawling, so travelers should keep their physical health and limitations in mind before visiting. Still, the park's rich history makes the sometimes strenuous journeys well worth the effort.

Remnants of Breckenridge's history as a mining hub give the town a distinct aesthetic. The Rocky Mountains that serve as the town's backdrop, the Victorian-era architecture in the Historic District and the year-round festivals and events all contribute to the town's charm. Plus, the locale's thousands of acres of skiable terrain and the area's long ski season make Breckenridge a winter travel destination for the books. When the powder melts, the verdant vegetation that floods the trails make Breck (as locals call it) magical. What's more, the craft beer scene is an attraction in its own right.

Powder hounds take note: While it may not be as glamorous as some of its Colorado counterparts, Steamboat Springs is still an excellent destination for a ski vacation . After all, it maintains the nickname of Ski Town, USA. Here, travelers can take advantage of nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain covered in snow so light it's commonly called Champagne Powder snow. Steamboat Springs is equally impressive when it's dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer or brimming with foliage come fall. After a long day of hiking, biking or shredding powder, visitors can head to Strawberry Park Hot Springs to soothe aching muscles with a massage or a soak in a thermal pool.

Pagosa Springs' best-known attraction is – you guessed it – its renowned hot springs. Located along the banks of the San Juan River in southwestern Colorado, this small mountain town is home to the world's deepest geothermal hot spring, the Mother Spring aquifer, so it comes as no surprise that travelers flock here looking to soak their stress away. But this alluring Colorado destination has more to offer than just incredible hot springs. Here, travelers can participate in a range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, skiing, rafting, horseback riding, fishing and more.

Another must-do activity is riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Here, travelers can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of San Juan National Forest aboard an authentic steam locomotive.

With recreational activities galore and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, Buena Vista is one of Colorado's best under-the-radar travel destinations. Spend your time relaxing in Buena Vista's natural hot springs, which are some of the hottest in Colorado. Or, go for a drive along the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway for unforgettable mountain views. Meanwhile, if you want something more adventurous, Buena Vista is a great base for hiking 14ers (mountains exceeding 14,000 feet), and you can also try biking, off-roading or white-water rafting. Thanks to Buena Vista's valley location, these activities are typically available year-round.

Colorado's version of the Grand Canyon features some of the state's most stunning views. Carved by the Gunnison River millions of years ago, the Black Canyon's more than 2,000-foot depth has impressed spectators for centuries, including the Ute Tribe who once called the canyon home. Now, along with its incredible scenery, parkgoers can enjoy fishing in the Black Canyon's highly regarded waters, climbing its towering rock formations and hiking or skiing its impressive trails. At night, attention shifts from the rocks and river below to the sky above when visitors can stargaze in this International Dark Sky Park.

Known as both the last great Colorado ski town and the wildflower capital of Colorado, Crested Butte beckons to outdoorsy types year-round. In winter, skiers and snowboarders will find trails for all skill levels, though the town is most famous for its extreme terrain and steep slopes. When temperatures rise, visitors can trade in their skis or snowboards for mountain bikes to take advantage of Crested Butte's hundreds of miles of bike trails. Arrive in July to see the town burst with color and partake in the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival's activities.

Nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve offers a unique outdoor experience. Visitors can sled down the tallest sand dunes in North America or float down the park's stretch of Medano Creek. Hiking, fat biking and horseback riding are other fun ways to explore the area's diverse ecosystems. And at night, travelers can admire the unfiltered night sky while camping. Great Sand Dunes is open year-round, but keep in mind that winter can be chilly and summer can bring scorching sand and thunderstorms, so parkgoers should plan their trips accordingly.

If you're looking to splurge during ski season, Aspen is the place to be. This small town is conveniently tucked between four renowned ski spots – Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands – that offer quality slopes for all levels of skiers. This iconic European-style ski town is a popular haven for celebrities and winter sports enthusiasts. With thousands of acres of snowy trails spread across one of the largest single-mountain resorts in the country, Vail is known for its top-notch skiing and snowboarding. But there is more to the town than just its slopes. When the snow melts and the temperatures rise, Vail's Epic Discovery area invites visitors to engage in other outdoor activities like zip lining, rock climbing and mountain coaster rides. Those looking for less adrenaline-inducing entertainment should check out the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and central Vail's boutiques.

Feel as if you've journeyed back in time during a visit to Dinosaur National Monument. Spread across Colorado and Utah, this protected area is known for its archaeological treasures. You won't find any dinosaur bones on the Colorado side, but budding archaeologists can test their skills by looking for small sea creature fossils on the Harpers Corner Trail. This side of the park is also a prime spot for outdoor activities like hiking, river rafting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. For breathtaking views of the surrounding canyons, go for a spin on the Harpers Corner Scenic Drive.

Colorado Springs stands out from its mountainous counterparts because it's not a ski destination. But what the city lacks in slopes it more than makes up for in incredible hiking areas like Pikes Peak, the mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful," and magnificent natural landmarks like the Garden of the Gods. Mix that in with a good helping of small-town charm, delectable restaurants and a diverse array of attractions (including the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center), and Colorado Springs has all the makings of a great vacation.

Although Boulder is Denver's slightly smaller neighbor, it is no less impressive. With both the Rocky Mountains and the Flatirons in the background, Boulder combines all of the relaxation of an outdoor escape with the energy of a city. Nature lovers will feel right at home while hiking and biking the city's trails or tubing down its stretch of Boulder Creek. Those looking for more urban entertainment can explore Boulder's beer trails or shop and dine at Pearl Street Mall's boutiques and restaurants.

Colorado in November: Everything You Need to Know

Colorado in November: Everything You Needto Know

Considering a trip to Colorado in November and need some help? We’ve got you covered!

November in Colorado brings weather that trades Autumn’s fall foliage for Winter’s snowy mountains. The Thanksgiving Holiday can be celebrated in lots of different towns, with holiday decor and restaurant specials offered. Late November is typically the start of the ski season for some resorts.

Colorado in November is an autumn dream; filled with beautiful fall foliage, colder weather and the anticipation of the holiday season. November is a perfect time for travelers who are looking to spend less on their vacation and participate in some of the cold weather events before the Winter crowds come. It’s also a great time for those looking to have a very relaxing trip in the Rockies.

Whether your goal is to hit the early-season ski slopes or simply savor the final days of fall, this comprehensive guide will tell you everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip.

This article is part of Roundtript’s series of expert Colorado travel guides for every month of the year.

For a summary of each Colorado month & season all in one place, check out our big guide to the Best Times of the Year to Visit Colorado .

Colorado Weather in November

Colorado Weather November

Colorado Weather in November starts to get chilly, seeing average daily highs in the high 50’s°F (13°C) and average daily lows in the high 30’s°F (3°C) across the state. Most higher altitude locations will have significantly lower temperatures than low altitude locations. It’s best to prepare your wardrobe like you would in the Winter months, with some lighter layers for random warmer days.

Rain is coming to a stop as the snow takes over, with rolling storms coming in sporadically. Clouds will begin to blanket Colorado, with early November seeing clearer days and late November experiencing very foggy days with low cloud cover. The winds also begin to pick up in this month, though they won’t reach their full power till January.

No matter the time of year, altitude will always be a factor when traveling to Colorado. Some towns like Alma have an elevation of 10,300′ and others like Wray have an elevation of over 3,000′. As a matter of fact, altitude sickness affects nearly 10% of all visitors. You can prepare your body by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, resting frequently and avoiding alcohol.

Colorado Affordability & Crowds in November

Colorado Crowds November

Colorado crowd levels in November come to one of the lowest points in the year. Though the holiday season is quickly approaching, this month has the lowest attendance for the Fall season. Cities across Colorado will experience this decrease in visitors, making it an optimal time to get some last minute hiking or first time skiing in before the weather gets cold and the crowds roll in.

Hotel rates will vary by city, with most ski towns offering a wide range of rates, small towns being the cheapest and the capitol city of Denver averaging around $150 – $200 per night for the best hotels. Booking hotels, restaurant reservations, excursions and tours will be pretty easy this month, although some of the smaller towns could have hotel and restaurant closures before the ski season begins.

Colorado Snow & Skiing in November

Visit Beaver Creek

Colorado snowfall in November becomes heavier and more prevalent, bringing ski runs their best conditions since Spring. Some areas will definitely see more snowfall than others, especially if they are located at higher altitudes. Since snowfall can be sporadic, so most ski runs will be making snow to accommodate guests.

Most ski resorts will begin to open this month, usually after Thanksgiving. The best part about coming in November is that there will be fewer people on the lifts and the runs, even though some lifts and runs may be closed at this time. Ski passes will also be discounted in some areas, making your trip a little cheaper than peak season.

Best Colorado Ski Resorts in November

Colorado Ski November

Arapahoe Basin & Loveland

Both of these excellent ski areas are located in Dillon, CO in the Arapaho National Forest. Both are more suitable for a quick casual ski trip where you aren’t in it for frills or expensive meals. Expect to stay outside of the area and travel in to ski each day. In November, the snow on the ground might be lighter at the beginning of the month and thicker at the end of the month.

Loveland has 1,800 acres of skiable terrain and a summit elevation of 13,010′. It’s said to be one of the best places for guaranteed snow early in the Fall season. They have great options for beginners and experienced skiers with both the Valley and Basin ski areas.

The Valley has it’s own lifts for novice skiers and offers a safe space for practice, while the Basin has wide open runs, steep drops and exhilarating trails. There are also On-Mountain Cabins available for rent, an on-mountain restaurant and a child care facility at the base.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is highly regarded as one of the best places to ski year round. Arapahoe Basin offers the ultimate Rocky Mountain experience with some of the lowest crowds and most incredible landscape views. It’s equipped with 1,428 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 13,050′. It’s appropriately nicknamed “the Legend” for it’s epic terrain that appeals best to intermediate and advanced level skiers.

Keystone Resort

places to visit in colorado for thanksgiving

Keystone is located in the high country of Colorado and is often one of the first resorts to open each ski season. Most years, Keystone will open in late October, but they wait some years until November if snowfall comes late. The resort comes with six different areas for expert jumps, moguls and rails with a summit of 11,980′. Skiers of all levels will find a sweet spot inside the 3,180 acres of terrain at this resort.

Breckenridge

places to visit in colorado for thanksgiving

Breckenridge Ski Resort boasts one of Colorado’s biggest ski areas with 2,908 acres of skiable terrain, a summit elevation of 12,998′, and the longest run at 3.5 miles long (most resorts have 2 mile long runs). There are suitable runs for all levels of skiers, including a 3,398 vertical drop, a 22′ superpipe and 187 different trails to experience.

The ski season at Breckenridge usually begins in early November. November is the optimal time to go before the crowds pour in, since Breckenridge is one of the most visited ski resorts in the state. With 11 on-mountain restaurants to choose from, the Gold Runner Alpine Coaster and over 150 boutiques in the shopping area, there’s plenty of entertainment to fuel your vacation.

Vail is considered one of the classiest, most upscale ski resorts in Colorado, drawing thousands from all over the world to it’s beautiful slopes. The ski season in Vail usually begins in the middle of November when the snows have had time to build up on the mountain. It’s got an 11,250′ summit with over 5,000 acres of skiable terrain.

Vail is one of the best places for both skiers and non-skiers to enjoy. Skiers will love the various terrain that accommodates all levels, as well as the 7 miles of back bowls to explore. Non-skiers will appreciate the two main base areas with heated walkways, excellent shopping and dining options, along with beautiful luxury resort accommodations.

places to visit in colorado for thanksgiving

Steamboat Resort is one of the best family-friendly vacation destinations in Colorado. There’s so much for parents with kids to enjoy, ski classes for beginners and lots of greens for young skiers. The ski season also opens mid-November and draws visitors of all ages and abilities to it’s nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain.

Beginners will have fun on the open green runs at the top of the summit, with an elevation of 10,568′, which features smooth terrain and intermediate tree runs for more adventurous types. Expert level skiers will appreciate the bump runs with moguls and many blue-black slopes on the mountain. The resort is often referred to as “Ski Town, USA” as there are many Olympians that practice here during the ski season.

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is essentially an offshoot of Vail and is considered a luxurious ski resort on it’s own. Beaver Creak is built for vacationers who love to ski but enjoy loads of entertainment, dining experiences and other excursions throughout their trip. The last week of November is opening time for Beaver Creek. This month is great not only for good snow conditions, but also for lower crowds and subsequently lower rates.

It’s got 1,815 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 11,440′. There are also plenty of ski-in/ski-out homes and base camp hotels to choose from. Beaver Creek Ski Resort is equipped with four different village areas with their own lodging, restaurants and shopping districts, giving visitors lots of options for a stellar ski vacation.

Crested Butte

Crested Butte is a little more secluded and best for expert skiers. The main town is nothing fancy, but will have fun activities and great recreation and amenities throughout the year, located three miles from the ski resort. The ski season opens around Thanksgiving Day most years. This small town provides vacationers with good lodging options and a host of eateries.

Best Things to Do in Colorado in November

Below are some of the best places to visit in the month of November. In addition to these places, other Fall activities available this time of year include ATVing, apple picking, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, sight-seeing, spa retreats and ziplining.

November Holiday Towns

Colorado Holiday Towns November

Breckenridge is obviously a top-tier ski destination, but (while the skiing is good and the slopes are less crowded in November) there’s such much more to enjoy. There’s no better time to take advantage of the low crowds, so get into the historical sites and museums while you can.

The ski town also offers a Breckenridge Dining Passport at the Welcome Center that will get you discounts at select restaurants, and bars will also offer specials throughout the month. There are also many guided hikes and tours led by experts who will take you through scenic walks or historic areas.

Steamboat has lots to offer guests during the month of November. It’s ski slopes are open and the town is filled with festivities. This is the ultimate time for relaxation in Steamboat Springs, while the crowds are low and the Winter chill is blowing in. Strawberry Hot Springs may still be accessible at this point, but if not the Old Town Hot Springs will be a great place for the entire family.

Thanksgiving is made extremely special and easy with Moving Mountains chefs’ Luxury Catered Chalet package . It makes the entire day a breeze, so you and your family can have the most outstanding holiday experience imaginable. Saddleback Ranch also has a Dining Sleigh Ride (not necessarily available Thanksgiving Day) but it’s a very unique experience for families to enjoy together.

Telluride has a fun Thanksgiving Day (opening ski season) for residents and visitors to enjoy. The ski runs will open first thing in the morning and skiers and snowboarders will line up early to be the first ones on the mountain. After they tire toward mid-afternoon, they’ll come back down the mountain for apres ski at favorite local spots like Tomboy Tavern in Mountain Village . In addition to apres ski, several restaurants are open for Thanksgiving dinner, including Allred’s Restaurant and The View Bar and Grill – both of which have amazing scenic views and a full menu of Thanksgiving dishes.

Visit Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs November

There’s no better month than November to have a relaxing holiday in Colorado and Glenwood Springs blows other towns out of the water. Glenwood is a very hospitable town that makes a perfect base for your vacation. A stay in Glenwood Springs gives you access not only to it’s own amenities, but also to neighboring Aspen where you can easily drive to experience the ski town or hike Maroon Bells for the day.

Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is home to one of the largest natural hot springs on earth . This is a popular destination with Summer tourists, so November visitors will love the hot springs without the crowd. The springs sit between neighboring Lookout Mountain and Red Mountain, creating a gorgeous view. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is another great place to visit for the cave tours, or to catch live music and drink specials on the weekends.

Thanksgiving Day in Glenwood is a truly special time. The day is essentially the beginning of the Christmas season for the town and there are all-day festivities, including a Holiday Lighting & Wine Walk. The Hotel Colorado has a Christmas lighting ceremony with a fireworks display, there are free alcoholic beverage tastings featuring local wineries and distilleries, and kids can even meet Santa!

Visit Denver

Visit Denver November

The Mile High City is best known for being the capital of Colorado; a true metropolis that began humbly as a frontier town that boomed in the Gold Rush. If you’re not looking to hike, climb or bike your way through the mountains, Denver is a great place to be in November before the Winter crowd comes in.

In November, there are many free days at the local museums and attractions. First Saturdays are free at Denver Art Museum and Veteran’s Day is free at Denver Botanical Gardens . Check the calendar at both Denver Zoo and the Denver Children’s Museum as one or two random days will be free to visitors in November.

There are many other things to do and experience in Denver, like the historic tours and Old West attractions. In addition to the many attractions all over the city, like Denver Union Station and other historical sites (a lot of these experiences are included in the $30 Mile High Culture Pass – three days of admission and discounts on transportation), you can easily escape to more secluded areas right outside the capitol – like Red Rocks Park or Dinosaur Ridge .

Free Days at National Parks and State Parks

Colorado National Parks

Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is free at all the National Parks across the state of Colorado . This is a great time to plan a day of sightseeing and hiking at one of these beloved parks before the Winter blows over the mountain ranges, making the journey a little too cold for hiking.

Rocky Mountain National Park is best for hiking and seeing possible elk and bighorn sheep that are coming down the mountain before Winter. If you feel a hiking excursion may be too cold in November, you can experience the full glory of the Rockies from your car while driving on Trail Ridge Road, if it’s still open. For the true western experience, try out one of the Horseback Riding excursions, led by trained horsemen who guide you through the National Park’s lower regions.

Mesa Verde National Park is the perfect destination for hiking enthusiasts and athletes who love a challenge. The National Park is filled with over 600 cliff-dwellings dating back to 600AD and has some of the most well-preserved archeological sites in the country. Not only will you get an educational history lesson of the area, you’ll get a serious workout just trying to get to these sites.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is considered Colorado’s least visited National Park, therefore crowd levels should never be a problem when visiting any time of year. But what makes November such a great month to go is the crisp Fall weather. There are many activities to take part in while visiting, including hiking, fishing, stargazing and even skiing later in the season.

Great Sand Dunes is the ultimate outdoor adventure that thrill-seekers can take part in. This unique stretch of landscape in southern Colorado offers hiking, fat biking, sand sledding, camping and horseback riding, just to name a few. Though it’s open year-round, November is an ideal month to visit the Dunes for some of the lowest crowds. At night, the Dunes come to life with a brilliant starry sky. You can see the Milky Way, the bright Moon and even planets very clearly. You’re also encouraged to take nighttime walks, but use extreme precaution to find your way back.

Black Friday, or “Fresh Air Friday”

Colorado State Parks host visitors for free the day after Thanksgiving. Traditionally, Black Friday is a high-energy spending spree across the United States. The state parks determined one of the best ways to promote relaxation after our annual day of gratitude was to open these beautiful areas to the public for free.

The state parks have a lot of the same experiences available that the national parks have, but usually on a smaller scale. Some of the most popular activities in the state parks include hunting and fishing, hiking and biking, camping, boating and wildlife viewing.

Scenic Drives on Colorado Highways and Byways

Colorado Scenic Highways November

Colorado is home to 26 scenic highways and byways all over the state, so there’s no shortage of drives you can take wherever your vacation takes you. November is considered the last month of the year to get your scenic drive in before the snow makes these roads difficult to pass. Below we’ve listed some of the most popular drives for tourists.

San Juan Skyway is a long nationally known driving loop located near Telluride. There’s a smaller drive on the beautifully scenic road called the “Million Dollar Highway”. Built in the 1880s, the Million Dollar Highway is one of the state’s most spectacular drives as the highway was cut into the side of the mountain range. The complete San Juan Skyway drive is a 235 mile loop that travels through some of the most lovely views in Colorado.

Trail Ridge Road is located near Estes Park, taking you through the gorgeous Rocky Mountain National Park. You can experience the full glory of the Rockies from your car while driving on Trail Ridge Road and get gorgeous pictures with sweeping vistas. Along the way you may find fall-colored alpines forests, herds of elk or bighorn sheep and steep cliffs.

Guanella Pass Scenic Byway is connected to the Front Range town of Georgetown. It’s got breathtaking views of the alpine forests, lush lowlands, steep divides and bubbling creeks. Since the pass grazes over the treeline, drivers can often get a 360 degree view of the Colorado mountains.

Peak to Peak Highway is another drive from Estes Park, near Trail Ridge Road, giving you a serene view of the Continential Divide. Residents suggest going early in the day for less traffic and a fair share of wildlife sightings. It also travels through old ghost towns with old clapboard siding and Victorian-era design.

November Events in Colorado

Colorado Events November

There are many events to experience in Colorado all throughout the year. November’s most notable holiday is Thanksgiving, and many cities in Colorado will be hosting events for the holiday with anticipation for the Christmas season. Below we’ve listed the biggest and most popular long term events that appeal to most travelers in November.

All Colorado Beer Festival

The All Colorado Beer Festival is held annually in the Chapel Hills Mall of Colorado Springs. It’s a nonprofit event that raises money for Colorado Springs organizations and is open to the public. It features local brewers and distillers who serve up special drinks and old favorites for guests in attendance.

Colorado Country Christmas Gift Show

The Country Christmas Gift Show is an annual event for shoppers looking to secure all items for their Christmas gift lists. It showcases many local boutiques, shops and craftsmen who offer unique gifts for the season. The first weekend of this event is held in Denver and the second is in Colorado Springs.

Denver Christkindl Market

This artisan marketplace replicates the grand Christmas markets of Europe. Taking inspiration from Germany and other markets around the continent, the Denver Christkinkl Market is a fun experience for families. It starts before Thanksgiving and runs up until Christmas Eve, offering European Christmas goodies and drinks, as well as handcrafted gift items for purchase.

Blossoms of Light

Denver Botanic Gardens hosts the Blossoms of Light beginning every late November and running through the holiday season. The gardens are aglow with twinkling lights and extravagant decorations, creating a glowing winter wonderland. The event is made complete with sips of Holiday tea and drinks, along with other goodies to snack on while touring the gardens.

Small Business Satuday

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is Small Business Saturday around the entire country. Colorado cities and towns will be celebrating this day with local shops, artisans, farmer’s markets and boutiques staying open for longer hours to serve faithful patrons.

Colorado in November: Week by Week

Aspen, Colorado

The first week of November in Colorado won’t vary too much from the last week of October. The weather will be cool, with the chilliest temps coming in the late evening. Prepare to bundle up, but dress in layers as the days can still be a little warmer this late in the Autumn season.

Skiers can take to the slopes in a few of the open resorts this week, including Arapahoe Basin, Loveland and Keystone. The snows have fallen enough in these areas to create a good cushion for your backcountry and downhill skiing fun.

All Colorado Beer Festival is also happening this week in Colorado Springs. Guests can partake in local craft brews and taste samples from wineries and distilleries from around the region. The first weekend of the Country Christmas Market is taking place in Denver this week.

Second Week

The second week in November is usually starting to see a downturn in temperatures in most parts of the state. Colorado’s high altitude areas will obviously experience the coldest weather at any given time of the year, but will make for great snowfall in mid-November.

Skiers can now access the slopes in Breckenridge and Vail, taking advantage of the early seasons at these popular resorts. It’s a great time for beginners to test the runs before the crowds come in, often having the slopes to themselves this early in the ski season. Pricing at these resorts will also be lower for lift tickets and hotel stays.

Country Christmas Market is going on in Colorado Springs for tit’s second and final weekend of the year.

The third week of November in Colorado is often Thanksgiving week, with festivities going on in all parts of the state. The best places to be this week are generally in the most festive towns of Breckenridge, Steamboat and Telluride. Visitors will enjoy the Fall season, along with several Thanksgiving themed events.

This also marks the beginning of the ski season for Steamboat Springs, Beaver Creek and Crested Butte. Skiers will love the open slopes with minimal crowds this time of year, experiencing the first snows of the season with little contest.

After Thanksgiving, the state parks are free to the public for their Fresh Air Friday (taking place of Black Friday). Small Business Saturday is also being celebrated across the state in every city, with discounts on shopping at local stores and boutiques. Denver Christkindl Market has also begun and will run up until Christmas Eve.

Fourth Week

The fourth week of November in Colorado is Thanksgiving week some years when it doesn’t fall on the third week. The travel rates and crowds are still low through the end of November, so most travelers will enjoy the budget-friendly trips they can take at this time.

By this last week of November, all of the ski resorts have opened for skiers to come enjoy the runs. The snows have fallen a decent bit across all of Colorado, making it a great time to experience the powdery slopes before the ski crowds begin rolling in for the Winter.

Blossoms of Light is going on at Denver Botanical Gardens this week, running through the holiday season. It hosts many guests for this nighttime event, where you’ll see the gardens lit up by Christmas lights with a unique display of colors and shapes.

Taking a trip to Colorado in November, especially Thanksgiving week, has so many perks. Not only to you get the benefit of selecting a wide range of options for your Thanksgiving holiday, but you also have plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy on your vacation.

November in Colorado is perfect for those looking to save some money on traveling and hotel rates, while avoiding the big crowds and getting in on some of the first skiing action of the year. It’s also a nice time to get in some much needed rest and relaxation while leisurely experiencing some of Colorado’s best attractions during the off-season.

Is It a Good Time to Visit Colorado in November?

Wondering when to visit Colorado ? Well, November is an awesome time to visit Colorado if you like snow-capped peaks and wintery fun!

November in Colorado is also a great time to check out the Western Slope and 4 Corners Region. The sweltering summer heat has gone, but on a sunny day it can still feel quite pleasant in these areas.

It’s not quite as happening as the winter or summer months, but it’s a great time to take advantage of fewer crowds and cheaper lodging prices.

Ski season has just begun, and you’ll find plenty of fun things to do in Colorado in winter besides ski, too. Plus, you’ll find some fun holiday celebrations and events in Colorado in November. You can even cut down your own Christmas tree near Denver if you like.

What to Expect from Colorado Weather in November

If you’re planning to visit Colorado in November, you probably want to know: does it snow in Colorado in November?

And the answer is yes, especially at higher elevations. While Denver and the foothills might be totally dry or have a blanket of snow (it really could go either way), you should definitely plan for snow in the mountains in Colorado in November.

Colorado weather in November can get cold, so you should definitely pack a puffy and other warm layers. In Denver, the high average is in the 50s in November, with lows getting down into the 30s at night, but expect it to be much colder in the mountains.

What is Colorado Like in November?

Visiting Colorado in November is an excellent way to avoid the summer crowds. While most ski resorts will be open, November is still early season for Colorado skiing, so the lift lines should be shorter.

The hiking trails will also be less busy, and even though some of the best hikes in Colorado might have wintry conditions, you can still do lots of hiking in Colorado in November.

The hike to Dream Lake and Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is especially gorgeous with a dusting of snow on the ground.

November is also a more affordable time to visit Colorado since it’s shoulder season – the fall colors have passed but ski season isn’t yet in full swing.

But Breck should be open by mid-month, so you can still get a start on early-season skiing in November, and you’ll find lots of other things to do in Breckenridge in winter .

One of the most popular ski areas in Colorado, Vail also typically targets mid-November for ski season opening day. Vail is definitely a winter wonderland, so visiting Vail in winter is a wonderful experience.

Steamboat typically doesn’t open until late November, but you can still sneak in some skiing if you plan your visit to Colorado around Thanksgiving or later. You can also check out one of the best hikes in Steamboat Springs if there’s no snow on the ground.

And if the snow conditions on the slopes aren’t ready yet, there are tons of other fun things to do in Steamboat Springs in winter .

Make your November visit into a romantic getaway in Colorado by cozying up at the Frisco Inn on Galena which has hot tubs and saunas to warm up après ski.

Estes Park is a beautiful place and you can get a cabin with fireplace, full kitchen etc. Maybe you all can try snowshoeing inside Rocky Mtn Nat Park. Check on http://estesparkcvb.com/index.cfm

Cabins will not be located in the two cities you mentioned because they are cities! The cabins in the Colorado Springs will be within 1/2 hour or so of Colorado Springs itself.

Estes Park is also a good location and will definitely have snow in the park then. No hiking at that time but you could snowshoe or cross country ski. Lots of cute cabin type accommodations most of which are stuck in the 1970's and 1980's with their decor.

I am not sure I understand having hiking trails "closed"?

http://www.americansafariranch.com/index-1.html used to offer horse back riding in winter, you might check with them.

http://www.ymcarockies.org/zOLD-smrlodging.htm

http://www.academyridingstables.com/Activities/Ride_the_Garden_of_the_Gods.aspx

I just read an article about Colorado guest ranches open in the winter time...wish I had saved it! But you might look into that option, as well. For example, Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch is open in the winter (near Loveland , so would be convenient to visit Rocky Mtn Natl Park) with "bunk and breakfast" rates instead of their all-inclusive package. http://www.coloradoranch.com/ranch.php?id=8#rates

And definitely check out the cabins at Mueller State Park:

A guest ranch is a great idea misspWestSlope!

Best times to travel in colorado for thanksgiving 2021, thanksgiving travel is expected to rebound to pre-pandemic levels..

Amber Fisher , Patch Staff

AAA is reporting the best and worst times to travel during the Thanksgiving weekend.

COLORADO — If you traveled last Thanksgiving during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, traffic is going to look a lot different in Colorado this year, especially if you plan to make the trip by car. It’s also likely to cost you more to get to your destination.

As more Americans get vaccinated against COVID-19 and U.S. borders reopen to fully vaccinated international travelers, more than 53.4 million people are expected to travel this Thanksgiving, according to this year’s travel forecast released this week by AAA. The prediction marks a 13 percent increase from 2020.

This year’s forecast also reflects the highest single-year increase in Thanksgiving travel since 2005, bringing travel volumes close to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

“Now that the borders are open and new health and safety guidelines are in place, travel is once again high on the list for Americans who are ready to reunite with their loved ones for the holiday,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a news release.

Colorado travelers should prepare for roads and airports to be noticeably busier this year, according to the auto club.

While travel by car is expected to increase by 8 percent over 2020, air travel is predicted to increase by nearly 80 percent. Travel by bus or train is also expected to increase a staggering 262 percent.

Where are people traveling? AAA booking data reveals big cities and tropical destinations are topping travelers’ lists this Thanksgiving. And despite gas costing a dollar more per gallon than at this point last year, 90 percent of people still plan to travel by car.

Travel Times

Whether you plan to travel by plane, train or automobile, those doing so in major urban cities are likely to see increased delays in areas where traffic bottlenecks are already common.

The transportation analytics firm INRIX, in collaboration with AAA, predicts drivers will experience the worst congestion heading into the holiday weekend as commuters leave work early and mix with holiday travelers.

Major metro areas across the United States could see more than double the delays versus typical drive times. Drivers in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New York City are likely to experience more than three times the delays.

If you plan to travel along some of Colorado's most congested highways into neighboring states, and want to avoid the rush, be aware of the peak travel times:

  • Wednesday: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Best time: After 9 p.m.
  • Thursday: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Best time: Before 11 a.m.
  • Friday: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Best time: Before 11 a.m.
  • Saturday: 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Best time: Before noon
  • Sunday: 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Best time: Before noon

Travel Costs

Travelers are also likely to run into some higher prices and other changes from last year. AAA recommends travelers book flights, car rentals, accommodations and other activities as early as possible, as prices are not expected to decrease as the holiday nears.

Traveling by air: Even with air travel seeing a boost this year, AAA estimates that the average lowest airfare will cost about $132, about 27.3 percent less than last year. Those wanting to book last-minute travel will find the best fares about two weeks prior to Thanksgiving, but availability may be limited.

Hotels: The cost of a night’s stay at mid-range hotels has increased about 39 percent, with average nightly rates ranging between $137 and $172.

Car rentals: Daily car rental rates are averaging about $98, a 4 percent increase over last year.

Travel Tips

Planning ahead can prevent a number of travel headaches, according to AAA:

  • Arrive at the airport early so you’ll have plenty of time to get through longer TSA lines and other travel checkpoints. For domestic travel, AAA suggests 2 hours ahead of departure time and 3 hours for international travel.
  • Consider booking a flight during non-peak travel periods to cut down on wait times.
  • Hit the road when there’s less traffic and allow for extra time when traveling to your destination.
  • Plan ahead. Check with state and local authorities where you are, along your route, and at your planned destination to learn about local circumstances and any restrictions that may be in place.
  • Minimize stops along the way. Pack meals, extra snacks and drinks in addition to an emergency roadside kit.
  • Follow public health guidance. Use face masks and remember to socially distance. Wash your hands regularly and be sure to pack disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer and a thermometer to help protect and monitor your health.
  • Check with your hotel. Prior to any hotel stay, call ahead to ensure your hotel is open and ask what precautions it is taking and what requirements are in place to protect guests.

For other helpful travel guidance from AAA, visit the organization’s COVID-19 Travel Restrictions Map for the latest state and local travel restrictions. Imagine riding in a horse-drawn sleigh through a quaint town blanketed with white snow as twinkling Christmas lights shine from the windows. If you are a Hallmark movie fan, you’ll know the kind of town I’m referring to. This year, Hallmark is releasing 40 new Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries that include many small Christmas towns in Colorado.

Here are several of our favorites for you to visit. These snowy towns made the list for their Christmas holiday spirit, decorations, natural scenery, friendliness, and activities. They are listed in no particular order as they are simply the best Christmas towns by all accounts and for all traveling preferences. Simply choose a different town for every Christmas and you are set for a good many years.

If you are considering visiting any of these Hallmark towns in 2023, please check their websites and Facebook pages to verify the times of the events.

Downtown Steamboat Springs

Best Christmas Town Colorado – 13 Destinations That Feel Like You’re In a Hallmark Movie

1. steamboat springs.

Dashing through the sparkling snow in a horse-drawn sleigh is a great way to kick off your visit to Steamboat Springs . With Christmas decorations throughout the village, magnificently decorated plus-sized trees, twinkling lights, and displays in a variety of colors, you can’t help but catch the holiday spirit. Everything around you in Steamboat Springs is merry and bright during the Christmas season.

The season kicks off in November with a Pioneer Christmas Storytime in the Festival of Trees at the Tread of Pioneers Museum. Museum workers in period costumes tell stories of pioneer and Victorian holiday traditions, and all guests are welcome to explore the Festival of Trees, a dazzling array of locally decorated trees.

Like most of the Christmas towns in Colorado, Steamboat Springs lights up the downtown tree on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The town is full of cozy, comfortable cottages you can rent to cuddle by the fireplace and watch the latest Hallmark movie premier as the snow falls outside. A perfect place to spend Christmas holidays this year for a couple or the whole family.

Santa arrives on horseback each year and will be available for photos the first three Saturdays in December. You can find some of Santa’s elves in various shops to assist you with last-minute shopping ideas.

The Steamboat Ski area will host a New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks.

If you are visiting after the holidays, you can enjoy the famous Winter Carnival, which includes loads of fun winter activities — from light shows to horse-drawn ski pulls — and was started “as a way to help residents cope with cabin fever during the height of the Colorado winter season,” says the Steamboat Springs Chamber.

Lightup night in Breckenridge

2. Breckenridge

Breckenridge , with a population of 4,500, is full of Christmas spirit. It’s positively brimming with activities and unique and traditional events during the holidays. Dating to the 1800s, the mining town boasts historic homes and lamp posts that make it look like a charming Victorian-era Christmas town.

What’s more, every year, Breckenridge ups the ante on Hallmark-type holiday charm by transforming its historic downtown into a sparkling winter snow-globe scene with more than 250,000 LED lights. Everyone loves the Lighting of Breckenridge when they flick the switch to turn on the town’s holiday light display.

There is something for everyone in Breckenridge during the holiday season. Dog sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and world-class skiing are what everyone thinks about, but there is so much more.

All Christmas towns in Colorado have a unique event: one of the funniest and most photogenic events in Breckenridge is the Race of the Santas. It is usually held the first weekend of December, and you will see hundreds of people dressed in Santa suits hitting the town for a 5-kilometer race. Another unique event is the Bernese Mountain Dog Holiday Processional, where the colossal pups (and any other interested breed) parade down Main decked in holiday gear.

If you happen to be in town for New Year’s, you will enjoy a torchlight parade down the mountain with fireworks.

The festive spirit shines in this community with a holiday lineup guaranteed to warm any Grinch’s heart. If you’re planning a family vacation for the holidays, Breckenridge is the perfect place for a multigenerational vacation, with plenty of multi-room condos available.

Christmas lights in downtown Vail, Colorado.

Vail is one of the Christmas towns in Colorado that should definitively be on your traveling bucket list. Put on your scarf and mittens and brave the chill on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through White River National Forest . Or stroll the Bavarian-style streets of Vail decked out in garlands, bows, and twinkling lights everywhere. Listen for Christmas carolers serenading visitors in this wintery paradise.

Vail is truly Hallmark movie material. In fact, a Hallmark movie, Winter in Vail , was filmed here in 2019 and premiered in January 2020. It showcased the bell tower, a covered bridge, and the town’s gorgeous Children’s Fountain in the opening scene.

Vail Holidays begins the second weekend in December with a tree-lighting event, and the merriment continues until January 1. Events include a Kris Kringle Market, where you can purchase all kinds of holiday gifts, and an Ugly Sweater Fun Run.

The quaint town of Estes Park, Colorado, during winter

4. Estes Park

Estes Park is another charming Hallmark-type of Christmas towns in Colorado. I adore this little town of 6,000 people that truly encapsulates the magical Christmas spirit. It is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park , which is open year-round.

Filled with cafes, hotels, and little shops, Estes Park is the perfect place to cuddle up and watch the snowfall. But don’t get too comfy, or you’ll miss the merriment of the Catch the Glow Parade & Celebration, featuring marching bands, floats, dancing, and live music. Starting November 25th, and every weekend in December, the town hosts holiday events.

The mountain town of Frisco, Colorado, during the holidays.

A cute little mountain town, Frisco is the epitome of the Hallmark movie town. With a population of only 2,700 people, everyone feels like family, and this friendly town sparkles during the holidays.

They host an Old Fashioned Christmas Bazaar in mid-November to get everyone in the mood and shopping early. The event features jewelry, photography, hand-sewn and knitted items, wood art, Christmas décor, food gifts, and grab bags for charity.

The Christmas festivities begin with a town tree lighting the Saturday after Thanksgiving and continue through the Christmas season. They host Wassail Days, which is loaded with winter and holiday traditions, including Wassail sampling, 12 Sips of Wassail Cards (including the commemorative free mug), Santa Visits, Wassail Night at the Museum, caroling, and a whole lot of Hallmark-type holiday cheer.

Mature travelers will enjoy the free sleigh rides, and if you’re adventurous, you can even try snow tubing.

The town of Aspen, Colorado, during winter time.

Aspen is truly a winter wonderland. This former mining town receives an abundance of snow, so you are pretty much guaranteed a white Christmas.

Holiday magic reigns in Aspen during the yuletide season. Things you can enjoy here include Quaint shops, steaming cups of hot cocoa, sleigh rides and Victorian caroling, which you can also witness in South Carolina towns at Christmas .

This town is one of the best Christmas towns in Colorado for mature couples to enjoy a romantic Christmas for two. There are numerous adults-only events, and the 12 Days of Aspen celebration occurs during the last 12 days of December every year. It features fireworks, magic shows, ice skating, film screenings, and more.

There is also a mountain torchlight parade on New Year’s Eve.

If you happen to be in town in January, you can attend Wintersköl 2023. Aspen’s annual “toast to winter,” features snow sculptures, fireworks, soup tasting, outdoor activities, and more during the 4-day event.

Every Hallmark movie town is a bit different. They all have that warm holiday feel, but they celebrate in different ways.

The town of Salida certainly has a unique way of celebrating. They don’t just decorate their town; they decorate a mountain. Instead of the traditional town tree, they use thousands of vibrant lights to outline a 750-foot Christmas tree on Tenderfoot Mountain. It is often referred to as Christmas Mountain. Now that sounds like something out of a Hallmark movie!

The lighting ceremony includes an indoor and outdoor festival with free cookies and hot chocolate for everyone in the community, and it is capped off with a spectacular fireworks display.

Salida truly pulls out all the stops at Christmas with its holiday events, such as the parade of lights, which greatly reminds me of towns in Maryland during the Christmas season, and a free screening of White Christmas .

Busy Bee Christmas Market in Georgetown

8. Georgetown

One of the smaller Christmas towns in Colorado, the quaint, quiet town of Georgetown is home to only 1,000 people. The town, located just off Interstate 70, is surrounded by towering snow-covered mountains, and the postcard-perfect scenery alone is enough to draw visitors.

The community comes together to put on a variety of events for the holiday season. With carolers in Victorian costumes and chestnuts roasting on an open fire, you’ll be reminded of an old-world Christmas market in Europe. The Georgetown Christmas Market is regularly ranked among the top Christmas markets in the United States and features unique handcrafted ornaments, gifts, a tree lighting, and horse-drawn wagon rides through the town. This year marks the 62nd anniversary of this special Christmas market.

A snowy night at the Mountain Lodge in Telluride, Colorado.

9. Telluride

Telluride is a beautiful mountain town in a remote part of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The white Rocky Mountain peaks make up its backdrop, and its historic downtown and Victorian homes trimmed in bright holiday lights reflecting on the snow will make you think of Hallmark from the first moment of your visit.

Looks aren’t the only thing going for this festive town of 2,400 people. The Holiday Prelude festival gets everyone into a joyful spirit. Other events such as the Telluride Arts Holiday Bazaar, Noel Night, and the lighting of the ski tree are also fun to attend.

Sitting between the towering granite walls of a box canyon, Ouray is a classic Colorado Hallmark town. Known as the Switzerland of America, it offers unmatched winter scenery.

Winterfest Ouray kicks off the season with spectacular Christmas light displays. The main street is decked out with holiday lights against the snow-draped Rocky Mountain backdrop. You’ll feel like you are in a winter wonderland where holiday magic reigns supreme.

If you are an adventurous traveler, you can try Ice Climbing during your visit.

Mature travelers will love relaxing after a day of activity in one of the town’s mineral hot springs .

Hotel Colorado decorated for Christmas

11. Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is my favorite Hallmark movie town for mature travelers. Located on Colorado’s Western Slope, the town is home to the historic Glenwood Hot Springs Resort and so much more . Soaking in the natural hot springs pool is a treat year-round, but doing it while Christmas lights twinkle all around you is magical.

For the most beautiful scenery you can imagine, ride the train from Denver to Glenwood Springs. The snow-covered Rocky Mountains glisten as the sun hits them, looking like something out of a picture book. There is just something about riding a train that rekindles the old-fashioned Christmas spirit.

There are dozens of little shops and eateries in Glenwood Springs, and the whole downtown area sparkles with lights and decorations. The trees along the main street are covered in dazzling lights. The Hotel Colorado hosts a magical light show every year.

Since 1893, the Hotel Colorado has hosted a magical light show every year with extravagant decorations. This year, they will be decorating over 60 Christmas trees and more than half a million holiday lights will be used. They will also use lights to decorate the lobby, dining areas, banquet rooms, signature suites, and the life-sized gingerbread house that is Legends Coffee & Gift Shop. And if you want to watch more amazing light shows amid the Holidays, don’t miss out on some of the amazing lightshows in West Virginia during Christmas Holidays .

The Hotel Colorado’s 32nd Annual Lighting Ceremony kicks off the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving. During the ceremony, the hotel illuminates over half a million lights on its exterior and shoots off fireworks from both bell towers. You can check out the hotel’s holiday event schedule here.

The "Polar Express" during winter time in Durango, Colorado.

12. Durango

Located in Colorado’s southwestern corner, Durango is a picture-perfect town at Christmastime. The small downtown is wonderfully decorated, lit with thousands of lights throughout the Christmas season.

During the holidays, this town transforms into a vision of white, offering various activities for a magical time, including a tree-lighting ceremony, singing with Santa, an arts and crafts fair, and a variety of boutiques selling unique Colorado-made gifts.

New this year will be the month-long Holiday Station event that involves the entire county. Be sure to check out the Durango website for the latest information.

If your grandkids are traveling with you, they will love riding the Polar Express to the North Pole, operated by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The railroad offers several holiday-themed rides. Adults will enjoy the Cascade Canyon Winter Train ride with the glistening San Juan Mountains.

The Pagosa Springs riverwalk with its lit-up hot air balloons

13. Pagosa Springs

I can think of nothing better than sitting in the Pagosa Hot Springs surrounded by twinkling lights glistening off the snow and reflecting from the river. But guess what, it gets even better — they are holding an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration on December 17 from 4:30–7 p.m. It is a walking tour along the riverwalk trail in downtown Pagosa. The route is decorated with lights and there are numerous entry points.

The route includes festive displays, free hot chocolate, cider, choirs, games, treats, live music, a scavenger hunt, and Santa Claus. Santa’s workshop will be set up outside the visitor center the entire holiday season.

The town celebrates the holidays with live theater productions, a Festival of Trees fundraiser, a community-wide lighting contest — last year there were about 50 participants — and more.

Colorado is filled with adorable small towns that will make you think of Hallmark movies. From sleigh rides to Santa runs, the state excels at holiday festivities. These towns are full of Christmas spirit and sparkling lights sure to help you make Hallmark moments of your own.

How Cold is Colorado in December?

January and January are the coldest with temperatures ranging between 16°F and 46°F during the festivity season. Even though there is an average of more than 300 days of sunshine in Colorado each year, Colorado gets plenty of snow during the fall, winter, and spring months.

Colorado’s position far inland and great distance from any large bodies of water result in it having hot summers and cold winters with relatively large temperature differences throughout the day.

Were Hallmark Colorado Christmas Movies Actually Filmed in Colorado?

Yes, but there has been only one. Winter in Vail was actually shot there and it showed just how gorgeous Colorado can be in the winter. Other Hallmark movies set in Colorado have fictional settings, and there are at least ten of them. Nonetheless, they are all heartwarming holiday stories that manage to give us that cool Colorado color. Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart was also filmed in Colorado.

What is the Traditional Colorado Christmas Tree?

Colorado blue spruce is an attractive tree frequently used for Christmas trees or for ornaments. Known for its symmetrical form and beautiful silver-blue color, it is also the official state tree of Colorado since 1892. Another popular Colorado Christmas tree is the Colorado Concolor or White Fir, thanks to its needles lasting for 4-6 weeks without any dropping. That means you can set it up before Thanksgiving and not have to worry about it until after New Year’s Day.

What is There To Do in Colorado at Christmas Time?

Winter in Colorado, especially the Christmas season, is the perfect season for unique activities like dog sledding, ice climbing, snowshoeing, soaking in hot spring pools, and much more. Winter may be the most magical time to pay Colorado a visit. From iconic small ski towns to large cities with delicious food, cultural events, and historic sites, Colorado has something for everyone.

Why are Hallmark Christmas Movies so popular?

Hallmark movies appeal to our sense of nostalgia for the holidays. They are undeniably heart-warming and provide a respite from the hectic reality and a story to make you feel good for the ages. During Christmas, more than 80 million people all over the USA watch at least a few minutes of a Hallmark movie, so it’s not surprising that for more than a decade, Hallmark Christmas movies have topped the networks’ popularity charts.

The Best Places to Visit in Colorado — National Parks, Small Towns, and Hot Springs Included

From stunning national parks to quirky small towns, these are 20 of the best places to visit in Colorado.

Colorado is perhaps best known for the Rocky Mountains that stretch across the state and offer up hiking and biking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. But what most people don’t know about Colorado is that the state also has beautiful red rock formations set in the dry desert, ancient cliff dwellings, and alternative towns that dance to the beat of their own drums.

The one thing that binds everyone who lives in or visits Colorado is a love of nature and the outdoors — be it river rafting, climbing 14,000-foot peaks, or wildflower viewing. And as someone who grew up in the state (and lives here now), I’ve spent several decades exploring the vista-rich Centennial State. These parks, monuments, towns, and sites showcase the variety of experiences the state offers. Here are 20 of the best places to visit in Colorado.

Rattlesnake Canyon Arches

Utah’s Arches National Park has the world’s highest concentration of natural arches, but right across the border in Colorado is the world’s second-highest concentration. And in Colorado, you don’t have to pay a national park entry fee (or battle the crowds) to see them. Rattlesnake Canyon Arches boasts 35 natural arches tucked in a canyon on a 123,400-acre preserve.

Related: 10 Best Colorado National Parks and Sites

Larimer Square

Colorado may be known for its natural beauty, but the draw of downtown Denver is impossible to overlook. Larimer Square was the city's first designated local historic district for good reason — the city block is perfectly picturesque with shops and eateries that round out the Colorado experience. The square is a short 10-minute walk from the heart of the city: Union Station.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

It doesn’t get more Colorado than watching a golden eagle soar above a steep gorge. The sighting is part of the experience at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado. The national park is marked by a deep, river-carved gorge with sheer walls. For the coolest view, check out the Painted Wall cliff that looks as if it was painted with giant stripes.

Colorado National Monument

When you think of the American West, chances are you imagine something like the Colorado National Monument , which sits high on the Colorado Plateau and includes natural wonders like sheer canyon walls, towering monoliths, herds of bighorn sheep, and soaring eagles. In this grand landscape, there is plenty to keep you busy — including the beautiful Rim Rock Drive, year-round camping, and hiking and biking.

Aspen is by no means a hidden gem, but it’s popular for a reason. The beautiful mountain town has four ski areas (that you can access with one lift ticket) and a surprising amount of culture for a town of around 7,000 people. And it wouldn’t be a trip to Aspen without a stop by the Maroon Bells , the most photographed mountains in North America.

Mesa Verde National Park

This national park in southwestern Colorado is considered to be one of the state’s most sacred places. It was once inhabited by the Ancestral Pueblo people who built their homes in the sandstone cliffs. That heritage (and architectural wonder) is protected within this park, which is also a World Heritage Site and an International Dark Sky Park.

Amache National Historic Site

One of the most significant moments in Colorado’s history is not known by many. The Amache National Historic Site , also called the Granada Relocation Center or Camp Amache, is where thousands of Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated during World War II. Today, the eastern Colorado site shares the stories of the more than 10,000 people who passed through the camp — the majority of whom were U.S. citizens.

Pagosa Springs

There are plenty of natural hot springs throughout the state (just check out the state’s hot spring loop ), but one of the best is found in Pagosa Springs, a small town that sits over the world’s deepest hot spring. I’d argue the best spot to soak is The Springs Resort & Spa , which has terraced tubs set along the river, but if you want to save a buck, you can also soak in the totally free “ hippy dip ” across the river.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is Colorado’s most visited national park. It is just over an hour’s drive from downtown Denver and is unique in that it spans the Continental Divide. In the fall, the Old Fall River Road and Trail Ridge Road are particularly colorful drives, while mountaineers come to summit Longs Peak, the park’s tallest mountain.

Remember when I said that Colorado was home to “alternative towns that dance to the beat of their own drum”? I was talking about Crestone, a tiny town of just under 150 people that is committed to sustainable living and spirituality. Throughout the town, you’ll find a variety of off-the-grid homes and spiritual centers and sites like the Crestone Mountain Zen Center and the Tashi Gomang Stupa .

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

Just west of Denver, you’ll spot giant red rocks that seem to shoot out from the earth. This rock structure was long ago harnessed to create a natural amphitheater that has become world renowned for its unique sound quality. In fact, playing at Red Rocks has become a goal performance for many big-name artists.

Glenwood Springs

When it comes to mountain towns with all-around appeal, it’s hard to top Glenwood Springs. The “larger” mountain town (just over 10,000 people), is set on the interstate making it easy to access from Denver (2.5 hours away). The town has three developed hot springs, a mountaintop adventure park that can only be accessed by gondola, and a river that provides opportunities for paddlers and fishers.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of those places that you might not expect to find in Colorado. The park protects a natural phenomenon: giant mounds of sand that were collected at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America and the mysterious “surge flow” of Medano Creek .

Crested Butte

Like every other Colorado mountain town , Crested Butte has wonderful hiking and biking trails and great skiing, but what sets it apart is the abundance of wildflowers that earned it the nickname “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” There’s even an annual 10-day festival celebrating the blooms.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument

In the dry, red rock canyons of southwestern Colorado is this archaeological wonder. The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument encompasses a whopping 174,000 acres that contain clues to the daily lives of ancient Indigenous people, including more than 8,300 recorded villages, cliff dwellings, shrines, kivas, petroglyphs, and other historic sites.

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is yet another Colorado hot spring and ski town, but unlike the others on this list, Steamboat has a unique American West feel. Here, cowboy hats are just as common as Chacos, and the landscape lends itself to people who like to get outside. There are two ski areas, geothermal hot springs, and a state park directly to the north.

Denver Union Station

Many cities have a train station, but Denver has turned their transportation hub into the heart of the city. The 1914 Beaux-Arts train station , which is also a historic landmark, consists of 10 chef-owned restaurants and bars, a boutique hotel, and a handful of unique shops (and there are four bee hives on the roof). Once you’ve shopped and eaten your fair share, you can hop on the bus, light rail, or Amtrak to your next destination.

The city of Durango is perched where the mountains meet the desert, providing a landscape that has a little of everything. There are hot springs, ski areas, mountain biking trails, and plenty of fun to be had on the Animas River that runs through town. In the summer, a top to-do is riding the 19th-century Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango to Silverton, Colorado over a mountain pass.

Dinosaur National Monument

Like dinos? Colorado has you covered. At this national monument , which straddles the Colorado-Utah border and passes into both states, there’s endless proof that dinosaurs once roamed the Colorado landscape. The monument includes dinosaur remains that are embedded in the rocks, petroglyphs from early humans, and plenty of outdoorsy things to do including river rafting, hiking, and camping.

Boulder is a college town with easy access to Denver and the mountains. To the west of the city sit the Flatirons, rock formations lined with trails, while the downtown neighborhood of Pearl Street Mall has everything from art galleries to inventive eats and unique boutiques.
