15 BEST Cenote Tours from Cancun [2024]

By: Author Stefania Guglielmi

Categories Mexico , North America

Looking for the perfect Cancun cenote tour? You’re in the right spot! Check out this list of the best cenote tours from Cancun.

It’s certainly not a secret anymore that you can find some incredible cenotes in Cancun. They’re all over the Riviera Maya as well, in places like Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Valladolid. Cenotes have officially taken over my Instagram feed!

If you’ve been following this blog, you might already know I’m pretty obsessed with cenotes . I even wrote tons of posts about them over the last few years!

Last year I went back and spent a few months in Mexico , mainly in the Yucatan/Quintana Roo region. This gave me the chance to visit more cenotes and update the information on this blog.

Visiting cenotes should definitely be on your list of things to do in Cancun ! Some people prefer exploring the cenotes on their own. However, others prefer to join a Cancun cenote excursion, so they can enjoy the day without hassle.

👉 I especially recommend a tour if you don’t have a rental car . Taxi prices have increased tremendously over the years. So much, that you will end up spending more on taxi rides if you’re visiting a few cenotes than you would spend on a tour.

Drone image of a cenote in the jungle inserted in a post about the best cenote tours from Cancun.

However, just because you can find hundreds of cenote tours from Cancun available, it doesn’t mean they are all good and worth your hard-earned money!

That’s why we’ve done the work for you, and selected the very best Cancun cenote tours. They all come with  excellent reviews from previous travelers , and offer great value.

⚠️ Update 2024 : This post used to include an activity that combines a visit to the cenotes with swimming with turtles in Akumal. Unfortunately, after my last visit, I can’t recommend anymore any activity that involves the turtles in Akumal.

This is because the experience has ceased to be sustainable . Here at Every Steph, we care about the wildlife’s well-being, and we ask you to do the same.

I personally use (and trust)  Viator  and Get Your Guide to book tours around the world. Both companies offer a  24-hour cancellation policy . This means you will receive a full refund if you cancel most experiences at least 24 hours in advance.

Not enough time? These are the very best tours 👇

OUR PICK: The BEST Cancun Cenotes Tour

Coming from Cancun and want to see a few different cenotes in one day? This Tour Cenotes Oasis Maya by Xcaret will allow you to make the most of your day. You will snorkel and kayak in four private cenotes, and even get to rappel and zipline.

  • The Fire Cenote, K’áak’ , is an open cenote surrounded by jungle, with lush vegetation. It’s the perfect one for swimming or inner tubing.
  • The Wind Xenote, Xenotes Iik’, is an ancient cenote where you can enjoy zip-lining and cliff jumping from seven meters high.
  • The Earth Xenote, Lu’um , is a closed cenote with tunnels and caves, that can be accessed via assisted rappel.
  • Lastly, the Water Xenote, Xenotes Há , is semi open cenote with beautiful aquatic flora and rock formations. There you’ll enjoy swimming and a one-hour kayak ride.

You’ll be served cookies and chocolate in between cenotes. Once you’re all cenoted out, enjoy a fancy jungle picnic. Soup, deli meats, cheeses, and salad, will be paired with beer, wine, and other beverages. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day!

👉 Why this tour? This tour in my opinion is one of the best Cancun cenote tours (if not THE best!) as you get to experience 3 different types of cenotes (open, cave, and semi-open cenotes). Most other tours will only show you one or two types of cenotes.

Read what the reviews say 👇

“ Swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, slides, ziplining and cliff diving. What more can you ask for!? Some great tips in the reviews and definitely worth the trip. Will definitely be a long-term memory, and making a lasting impression with our teens. So fun!” Heather_G – Read more reviews

CENOTE TOURS CANCUN FAQs

After having done extensive research, in our opinion these are the very best Cancun cenote tours: • Tour Cenotes Oasis Maya by Xcaret (you’ll get to swim at 4 different cenotes) • VIP Private Cenote Tour Cancun • Viator Exclusive Combo Tour: Tulum Ruins, Reef Snorkeling Plus Cenote and Caves

Yes, you certainly can by joining specific cenotes in Cancun tours. However, it’s something that you need to plan in advance. You can’t just show up to a cenote and ask for diving equipment like you would do with snorkeling. If you’re a certified diver, I recommend the Diving in Cenotes: Discovering the Mayan Underworld . If you’ve never tried it before, you could start with a free diving class .

In my opinion, the ultimate Cancun cenote tour is the Cenotes Oasis Maya by Xcaret .

Cancun Cenotes at a Glance

When we talk about Cancun cenotes we are referring to the closest cenotes to Cancun, because there is no cenote right in the city of Cancun.

The nearest Cenotes in Cancun, are located at only 30 minutes drive, in the so-called “Ruta de los Cenotes”, a narrow road that goes from Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario where you can find around 50 cenotes. (Don’t worry I will list the most beautiful further in this post)

If you have only half a day, this is definitely where you should go and you can even squeeze in a few cenotes in a short time.

However, if you have more time, I would suggest you go a little farther and explore other amazing cenotes in the area.

So, without any further ado, let’s explore the top 21 Cenotes near Cancun.

And don’t forget to check out my recommendation on the best way to visit the cenotes and what to pack for a cenote, at the end of this post. I can anticipate though, that renting a car from Cancun downtown or the airport will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

💡 Cancun Cenotes tip #1 – The best way to visit these cenotes I am including in this post, is by car. You can check price in my recommended Car rental platform, Discover Cars .

Cancun Cenotes | The closest cenotes to Cancun

As you may know, there are no public cenotes in Cancun, although I am sure some homes have their own, but you can’t visit them, or at least not that I know of. So this is the closest cenote to Cancun that I have found

1. Cenote Ix-Ha

Entrance fees 150 mxn (8 USD) | Opening Hours | 9 am to 5 pm every day

Cancun - rancho el Retoño

This cenote is located at 32 km from Cancun on the way to Leona Vicario and Valladolid.

It’s inside a ranch called Rancho el Retoño. You can find it on Google Maps .

Once you get to the reception of the Ranch, you can choose your bike and get to the cenote, not very far away.

It’s an open wide cenote with some hidden caves that you can explore and crystal clear water. Located in a very peaceful area.

I suggest you visit it while it’s still quiet before more people know about it.

In any case, it’s better to avoid weekends to avoid crowds . Bring your own snorkeling equipment because they don’t rent it. You can get a life jacket though if you think you need it.

Cancun Cenotes | La Ruta de los Cenotes, Puerto Morelos

La Ruta de los Cenotes translates as “the Cenote road”. It is in fact a road that stretches from Puerto Morelos, a beach resort 30 minutes drive from Cancun, to Leona Vicario, and it’s lined with amazing cenotes of all sorts.

It includes more than 50 cenotes but we will share the best ones here below

2. Cenote Las Mojarras 52 km/ 32.3mi

Or you can just chill and swim in the cool sweet waters enjoying the peaceful tropical surrounding. It’s located at km 12.6 from Puerto Morelos.

Cenote Verde Lucero is another great open cenote where you can swim, jump or launch yourself on a sort of zipline.

You will appreciate the spectacular emerald-green color of the water if it’s sunny. The Cenote is surrounded by skyscraping trees and a lush jungle. (km 17 – 12.7 miles from Puerto Morelos)

la ruta de los cenotes - Puerto Morelos - Cancun - Boundless Roads

Kin-ha is one of my favorite cenotes near Cancun and when I have friends coming to visit I normally take them there. It’s a cave cenote and you can either jump in it or you can easily climb some man-made stairs.

The family that runs this cenote also organizes tours in Quod in the jungle where they take you to another huge open cenote.

The surroundings of Kin-ha are also pleasant. After you swim you can also chill on the chairs or hammocks and relax enjoying a cold drink.

5. Cenote La Noria 60.7 km/ 37.7mi

You need to climb down some stairs to get inside. It’s like entering the womb of mother earth.

Right before getting to Kin-ha Cenote, on our right, you will see a small sign. It’s a cave cenote as well, with wooden stairs to get to a platform.

Facilities : Parking lot, Life jackets, Restrooms.

The Yucatan state is the richest one in the Yucatan Peninsula when it comes to the number of Cenotes. If you are looking to organize a road trip around Yucatan instead of a day trip from Cancun , please make sure you include the Cenotes of Homun and Cuzama.

Around Valladolid and Merida you can find amazing cenotes too and if you love to splurge you can check out the Yucatan haciendas where to stay in the heart of Yucatan surrounded by tropical vegetation and cenotes. 🙂

It’s been nick-named Catedral de las Maravillas which means “Cathedral of wonders”.

Although it’s open every day from 8 to 5, I suggest you should avoid weekends, Wednesdays, and Fridays which are cruise days and therefore much more crowded.

Here is the picture I took. I was so lucky as nobody was there when I went.

How to get there : From Valladolid, you can rent a bike or hop on a colectivo, minivan which leaves from the ADO station and ask the driver to drop you off at cenote Suytun.

If you have a car, follow the indication on the map. It’s very easy to cenote Suytun from Valladolid.

Entrance fee | Regular price 120 MXN (7 USD) Opening hours | Open every day from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm

cenote azul guy jumping head first

The Cenote Azul on the Riviera Maya, not to get confused with the Cenote Azul Bacalar, is a beautiful large open cenote made of multiple pools surrounded by a tropical garden.

Cenote Azul is one of the most beautiful cenotes near Playa del Carmen

You can swim, jump or just bask in the sun on one of the platforms or benches.

Avoid Saturdays and Sundays if you are not fond of crowded places.

Facilities – Bathrooms, Showers, Snorkeling and life jacket rentals, Snack bar, lockers

12. Cenote Cristalino 95.8km/59.52 mi

Entrance fee | $200 (12 USD) pesos for adults | $150 (8) pesos for children. Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

cenote cristalino Cave

The Cenote Cristalino is another beautiful open cenote, with emerald green water, embraced by a tropical lush jungle. It’s smaller than the nearby Cenote Azul, but still beautiful with a natural tunnel to swim through and a platform from where to jump.

This cenote, for being so close to Playa del Carmen and very accessible is often very crowded. In order to enjoy it fully, you should avoid weekends and prefer the early hours.

Facilities – Bathrooms, showers, snorkeling, and life jacket rentals

13. Cenote Eden 95.9km/59.58 mi

Entrance fee | 100 MXN per adult and 50 MXN per child Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 8.00 am to 6:00 pm.

Cenote Jarding del Eden

The cenote Eden is one of the divers’ favorites among the open cenotes of the Riviera Maya.

It’s a very wide cenote with impressive rock formations at the bottom that you can easily see through crystal-clear water.

In this cenote, I also managed to find the courage to jump too, from one of the platforms.

It was a weekday and the cenote was not that crowded. Just a few tourists and some divers.

In the cenote of Eden, you can also take your snorkeling gear and enjoy watching what’s underwater. Or you can just chill and swim around.

Keep in mind that you are not allowed anymore to take picture with a professional camera or a drone.

14. Cenote dos Ojos 121 km/75.1 mi

Entrance fee | Regular price $200 mxn ($12 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Cenote Dos Ojos Cave

The Cenote Dos Ojos, which means 2 eyes, is one of the most popular among divers and regular visitors.

If you want to dive, it requires a good level of preparation, suitable equipment, and an expert guide.

But if you just want to enjoy the cenote swim and snorkel you can just go for it with no restrictions but the usual safety measures.

15. Cenote Taak Bi Ha 121 km/75.18 mi

Entrance fee | Regular price $400 mxn ($25 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Cenote Taak Bi Ha

I went to check out cenote Taak Bi – Ha twice because the first time my camera failed me and all the pictures I took disappeared.

However, I found this cenote so beautiful that it was worth going back and give it another shot (literally) this time the pictures came out decently.

It’s a cave cenote that you reach by man-made wooden stairs that lead you to a wide platform where you can leave your stuff and go swimming. At the ticket office, you can also hire a guide to take you swimming around above a small cave around the cenote. But you can easily do it on your own.

To get to cenote Taak bi ha you need to follow the entrance to Dos Ojos, but instead of stopping at the ticket office, you should continue straight for another 1 km until you find the sign to the entrance. There is a parking lot where you can leave your car.

If you decide to get there by bus from Cancun it’s a bit trickier because you will need to get to Playa del Carmen and then hop on a minivan (combi or Colectivo) to Tulum and ask the driver to drop you off at Cenote Dos Ojos Entrance.

From there you will have to walk for 1 km or hire an on-site taxi for 25 MXN to take you there.

If you decide to walk, make sure you cover your head and mouth with a cloth as it’s hot and dusty. And bring water with you.

16. Cenote Caleta Yal-ku

Entrance fee | Regular price $14 USD (300MXN) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 9.00 am to 4:00 pm.

Caleta Yalku aerial view

Cenote Caleta Yalku is a cenote in disguise because it’s inside a bay in Akumal and if you don’t know it, it’s difficult to see the cenote.

The lagoon is surrounded by mangroves, and rocks with hooks and creeks, home to many birds and fishes, which makes it a great place for snorkeling and swimming.

I would recommend taking a snorkeling tour with a local guide to make your trip even more enjoyable.

Facilities : Snorkeling gear and life jacket rental, bathrooms, shower, snack bar, parking.

Cenotes in Cancun | Tulum area

17. cenote aktun ha  (also called cenote carwash) 137 km/85.1 mi.

Entrance fee | Regular price $200 mxn ($12 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Cenote Aktun Ha - Carwash

What I love about this cenote is that is less known and less visited. Also, you can walk around all its perimeter through a jungle path. Many beginner divers especially love it.

It’s quite a large natural pool of crystalline water not far away from Tulum.

Facilities – Bathrooms, showers, lockers ( 20 MXN), snacks

tour de los cenotes

18. Grand Cenote 133 km/82.64 mi

Entrance fee | Regular price $300 mxn ($17 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 8 am – 4.45 pm.

Gran cenote - Tulum - Mexico

The Grand Cenote is one of the most popular, the most expensive, and the most crowded.

It is a nice cenote indeed but I believe they are a little abusive with charging so much. They also charge you if you want to take pictures with a professional camera.

It’s a very beautiful cenote, no doubt, where you can swim through natural tunnels, jump and enjoy the natural surroundings, but if you get there when it’s crowded, which is most of the time, it takes away the magic.

If you really want to visit, make sure you get there early morning.

tour de los cenotes

19. Cenote Calavera 133 km/82.6 mi

Entrance fee | Regular price $200 mxn ($10 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The Cenote Calavera is another one of the most Instagrammed cenotes and one of the smallest among the Cenotes near Cancun

It is especially known among divers but also photographers. You can jump in but there is not much space for swimming.

There is a swing where you can hang out for the picture but then you need to leave space to others.

It’s one of my least favorite cenotes around Cancun to be honest but I included it for the sake of information.

How to get there

From Cancun, you can get to Tulum by ADO bus and from Tulum, you can go by bicycle or taxi, on the main road to Coba on the right side.

Or, of course, you can hire a car, which is my favorite option of all.

tour de los cenotes

20. Cenote Corazon 137 km/85.1 mi

Entrance fee | Regular price $150 mxn ($8 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Cenote Corazon is one of the most spectacular cenotes in the Riviera Maya. It’s located right after Tulum on the way to Chetumal

Cancun Cenotes - Cenote Corazon

There are wooden platforms nicely located along the rim where you can lie down and relax.

Get there in the morning, and possibly avoid weekends if you love peace and tranquillity.

Divers love it for the beautiful rock formations and caves at the bottom of the cenote, but it’s a great place where to hang out and read a book or take a swim.

tour de los cenotes

21. Laguna Kaan Luum 141 km/ 87.6 mi

Entrance fee | Regular price $300 mxn ($18 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 16:00 pm.

Kaan Luum Aerial view

It’s a spectacular lagoon with a cenote in it, located just a 10-minute drive from Tulum.

It was a favorite by locals, but it’s recently become very popular among tourists and expats as well who are flocking there to enjoy the spectacular views and calming scenery to escape from the city hustle!

They have now extended the platforms and added a lookout tour but it still gets crowded so I would suggest you should really go early to make the most of it.

Cenotes in Cancun | Coba

A little further away from Cancun, but still doable in one day, you can find the small village of Coba famous for the spectacular archeological site but also for the magical cenotes. Here below you can find information and pics.

If you have rented your own car I would suggest you push your itinerary further all the way to Coba only a 1 hr drive from Tulum.

The cenotes in Coba are close to each other and you can visit them all in a couple of hours, if you enjoy swimming, jumping, and relaxing in the soothing water surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites.

There is only one ticket office on the main road where you can purchase the ticket for each cenote separately in case you want to see only one. I suggest you see them all since you are already there.

In every cenote, you can find facilities such as bathrooms, showers, and changing rooms.

 Coba Cenote

22. Multun-ha

Entrance fee | Regular price $100 mxn ($5 USD) Opening hours | from Monday to Sunday from 9 AM to 6 PM

Multum-ha cenote platform guy walking

Cenote Multum-ha is the one that is 10 minute drive away from the other two.

You need to climb down some steep but easy stairs and you get to the ha spacious platform from where you can swim in crystal-clear water below a huge dome of stalactites and stalagmites.

Not good for those who are very claustrophobic. Otherwise, it’s spectacular.

There are no jumping platforms from this one.

23. Tankach Ha

tour de los cenotes

Takach Ha cenote is the deepest cenote of all. In fact, there is a tall jumping platform for the more adventurous swimmers.

For the more cautious like me, no worries, there is a very comfortable stair to help you get into the water. Or you can jump from the low platform.

24. Cenote Choo Ha

_Choo ha cenote rocks and transparent water

Cenote Choo Ha, is the most beautiful in my opinion, for the rock formation and the natural light that comes in.

It’s the most familiar and the water is very shallow and crystal clear. No jumping from here but you can swim and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Cenotes in Cancun | Interesting facts about cenotes

What are the cenotes.

The  Mexican cenotes  are deep underwater lakes whose waters are filtered from the rocks either from underneath the sea or the rainwater from above.

How are cenotes created?

Because the entire region is flat and made of limestone bedrock, those allow the rainwater to filtrate the soil from above and the seawater from the bottom, creating huge water deposits and underground rivers.

Cenotes as a Mayan heritage

The importance of the cenotes goes back to the Mayan times, the pre-Hispanic population that inhabited this area.

For the Mayan civilization, the cenotes were both precious and unique sources of water provision and sacred places for their religious ceremonies.

There are more than 6000 cenotes (imagine that!) all over the entire Yucatan Peninsula territory, many of them are private, and others have been accessible for the public to enjoy. This makes it also a decent source of income for the local owners.

What to bring when you visit a cenote

Here is a list of things you need to remember to take with you when you visit a cenote:

  • ecological repellent
  • ecological sunscreen (that you should wear only after swimming in the cenote)
  • snorkeling gear
  • dress light
  • bring an extra set of swimsuits to get change after

Cenote in Cancun rules | how to respect the environment when you visit a cenote

I always like to recommend some common and easy practices that respect the environment and help preserve it. Even if it’s just a grain of sand, everything helps. And it’s nice to know that we can contribute.

❌ sunscreen or repellent are prohibited before bathing in the cenotes

♻️ If you use them after, make sure they are eco-friendly.

🚯 Don’t leave anything that doesn’t belong to the place – Aka don’t litter

❌ Don’t hang onto stalactites or stalagmites or trees roots

📢 Don’t be noisy and respect other people’s tranquillity

😇 Don’t do anything that can damage the environment or other visitors

Cenotes in Cancun | How to get to the cenotes from Cancun

I always mention that the best way to visit the Yucatan Peninsula is by renting a car.

That’s even more recommended if you are visiting cenotes. It’s much easier to go on your own at your own pace without having to rush it or follow someone else’s schedule.

With the exception of the cenotes of the Riviera Maya that are right on the main road and accessible by local “colectivos” (minivans), it is very difficult to reach all the other cenotes by local transportation.

If you don’t feel confident driving in Mexico, which is absolutely understandable, you can always hire a taxi for the entire day or the hours you need.

In this case, make sure you ask your hotel reception or hire a taxi driver that you trust and absolutely check on the rates before confirming the service.

Usually, they are quite abusive in that area of Cancun and charge you outrageous prices, and moneywise it’s always more convenient to hire a car.

Cenotes in Cancun FAQ

Which is the best cenote in cancun.

There are so many amazing cenotes near Cancun that it’s impossible to say which one is the best. It also depends on whether you like peaceful cenotes, or some adventure, open or cave cenotes. I hope that reading this guide has helped you find the best one for you.

When is the best time to visit a cenote in Cancun?

Every time is a good time to visit a cenote, but a sunny day is much better to see the beautiful colors of an open cenote. If it’s a cloudy day it’s better to go in a cave cenote. You may want to check out when is the best time to visit Cancun to plan your vacation.

How much does it cost to go to a cenote in Cancun?

It varies, depending on how popular is the cenote and how the owner is managing it. Prices to visit a cenote range from 30 pesos to 700 for a cenote park with multiple activities.

How many cenotes are there in Cancun?

In the city of Cancun, there is only one Cenote that is open to the public that I know of, Cenote Ix-ha . But there are many more all around Cancun including the one that I spoke about in this post.

Are the cenotes in Cancun deep?

Yes, many of them can reach 30 mt. Kaan Luum Lagoon reaches 80mt depth. But others are quite shallow.

Are there alligators in cenotes?

In general, it’s difficult to find an alligator in a cenote but it’s not impossible. In fact, in Casa Cenote, there is an old gator called Panchito that hangs out but it’s harmful to visitors.

Do cenotes have snakes?

There may be snakes in the surroundings since cenotes are situated in a lush tropical jungle area with thick vegetation, a favorite home for snakes.

However, although I have been in so many cenotes that I cannot even count, I have never seen a snake. They may have seen me though. 😂

Are there sharks in cenotes?

No, no sharks can be found in cenotes.

Do cenotes smell?

Cenotes are not supposed to smell. If they do, it means there is something wrong with the water or the surrounding area. In this case, I would recommend not swimming and warning the local staff. They either can check or they can offer an explanation.

Is it safe to go to the cenotes in Cancun?

In general, Cancun is relatively safe to explore around, including going to the cenotes. There are some safety tips that you need to follow and I have included them in my detailed post linked above.

When you are in a cenote, just follow the cenote rules that are mentioned at the entrance and you’ll be fine. Most of all, if you are not a good swimmer or you don’t feel confident, make sure you wear a lifejacket, and jump only in the designated areas.

Ruta de los Cenotes: Best Cenotes in Puerto Morelos

Ruta de los Cenotes: Best Cenotes in Puerto Morelos

While cenotes in Tulum are amazing, and cenotes in Valladolid are quieter and fascinating, there’s nothing like Ruta de los Cenotes in Puerto Morelos.

Puerto Morelos cenotes are very off the path, many of them undiscovered and various still appear to be not very touristy despite the cenotes having zip lines, swings and other fun things people might like.

I’ve been hunting cenotes in Mexico for years now and in fact, during my recent visit I discovered that my photos from a few cenotes in Puerto Morelos are actually printed out and put on a poster there, so you might see some of these photos of me on the way when you go 😉

How to Get to Ruta de los Cenotes?

Ruta de los Cenotes is a road into the jungle in Puerto Morelos, but the road is fully paved. You’ll see a big sign on the highway.

Puerto Morelos is a smaller town between Cancun and Playa del Carmen . Visiting those cenotes can be easily done on a day trip from Playa del Carmen , Cancun or even Tulum .

There are no collectivos, so you either need to rent a car , take a taxi (but that’s pretty pricy as your driver will have to wait), or book a tour (only applies to some cenote visits).

The only other way of visiting the area without a car is by taking a Xenotes tour. They will take you to 4 different cenotes types for activities like zipline, snorkeling, kayaking and you get to see bits of everything. These cenotes aren’t usually open to the public outside of these tours, so it’s a very fun experience.

While you could hire a taxi to drive you around it would cost you way more as the taxi would need to wait for you while you’re at cenotes.

tour de los cenotes

IMPORTANT: At the cenotes in Mexico, you’ll be asked to swim without any lotions or creams on your skin at all, as can poison fish, sea plants, and other delicate marine life. You also must take a quick shower before entering the cenote.

You will live after being exposed to the sun for a bit, but you’ll live. Sadly, other creatures will not survive if you infect their natural habitat with sunscreen. However, you can get biodegradable sunscreen  at some cenotes.

Please note: all prices are in Mexican Pesos (MXN). Prices increase all the time, so please keep in mind that it might be slightly higher. Be prepared.

1. Cenotes 7 Bocas

One of the first cenotes you’ll see on the highway and often a spot for group tours. It’s a complex of a few cenotes, some for snorkeling and cliff jumping while others are for diving.

While popular, I honestly think there are better options of cenotes in Puerto Morelos.

Cenote 7 Bocas Entrance Fee : 400 MXN. Cenote 7 Bocas Op ening Times : 9 AM to 5:30 PM daily.

2. Cenote Ich-Ha (Cenote Ojo de Agua)

tour de los cenotes

Cenote Ich-Ha looks pretty unimpressive at first, but fear not – it’s amazing!

Ojo de agua cenote has multiple jumping spots with smaller openings (there’s also a ladder to get down), but once you get in you’ll be amazed by the clear waters and semi-open tunnels.

Cenote Ojo de Agua Entrance Fee : 250 MXN. Cenote Ojo de Agua Op ening Times : 9 AM to 4 PM daily.

3. Cenote Boca del Puma

tour de los cenotes

Boca del Puma is a cenote complex of 2 cenotes (one open cenote and one cavern cenote). You need to visit it with a guide as it’s deep in the jungle, then spend some time at Cenote Agua Escondida which is part of the complex.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a few friendly wild spider monkeys. Ziplining is included in the price and you can also take ATV trip. The actual Boca del Puma cenote is dark and incredible, but there’s also a second cenote with a zip-line, places to sit and shallow parts for kids.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this cenote.

Cenote Boca del Puma Entrance Fee : 400 MXN. Cenote Boca del Puma Op ening Times : 9 AM to 5 PM daily or by reservations recommended.

4. Cenote Zapote

Cenote Zapote is another eco-park with multiple small cenotes in the area, which means there are other activities included in the price as well as food and tequila tasting. Cenote Zapote is accepting guests by reservations only , otherwise, you might be waiting a while.

Cenote Zapote Op ening Times : 9 AM to 6 PM daily

5. Cenote La Noria

best cenotes Mexico

La Noria is a cenote on the road of cenotes close to Puerto Morelos. It’s a great cenote for diving as it’s very deep, but also you can swing inside a cave that I haven’t seen in any other cenote.

There’s also a floating platform at the center of the cenote, so you can swim to reach it and float.

Cenote La Noria Entrance Fee : 200 MXN. Cenote La Noria Op ening Times : 9 AM to 4 PM daily.

6. Cenote Sol y Luna

tour de los cenotes

Cenote Sol y Luna is one of the party cenotes. If you’re into fun spots to jump from, music, bar and hammocks to use. Surprisingly, when we visited in the morning there was absolutely no one else at the cenote so we had it all to ourselves.

The water in the cenote is surprisingly warmer than elsewhere and the color is amazing. There’s also a small waterpark with a few slides, temazcal place, and lounge chairs. For an extra 50 mxn you can rent a hammock.

Cenote  Sol y Luna Entrance Fee : 350 MXN. Cenote  Sol y Luna Opening Times : 10 AM to 5 PM daily.

7. Cenote Verde Lucero

best cenotes Mexico

Verde Lucero is an open cenote with various small caves that you can explore and use some floaties. Like the majority of cenotes in the area of Puerto Morelos, it has a zipline and a cliff for jumping. The whole scenery look very jungle like so you’ll surely enjoy it!

Cenote Verde Lucero Entrance Fee : 250 MXN for 4 cenotes Cenote Verde Lucero Op ening Times : 9 AM to 5 PM daily.

Adventure on the Ruta de Los Cenotes

By Author Lance Longwell

Posted on Last updated: September 30, 2022

There is no doubt that visiting a cenote along the Ruta de Los Cenotes is one of the most popular things to do when visiting Mexico. These fresh water sinkholes are the perfect way to cool off after exploring the Mayan ruins or simply on a hot day.

Visiting the Ruta de Los Cenotes

Cenote las mojarras, cenote verde lucero, cenote la noria, cenote kin ha, cenote zapote, cenote visitor tips, cenote tours, hotel and accommodations.

During previous trips, we’d explored cenotes closer to Playa del Carmen. On this adventure, we steered our rental car in the direction of Puerto Morelos just south of Cancun. Puerto Morelos is the starting point for the Cenotes Trail that stretches across the entire Yucatan Peninsula.

The dilapidated Ruta de los Cenotes sign in Puerto Morelos

On the south end of town, a two-lane highway leads under a concrete welcome archway that proclaims the “Ruta de Los Cenotes.” The painting on the welcome archway was well worn and faded, which should have been a sign of things to come. However, we figured this was a well-worn tourist trail and off we went. [NOTE: For the last few years, the archway has been removed and the entrance to the route appears to be under construction. Perhaps a new sign is coming. The Route is open for business.]

The Ruta de los Cenotes tourist trail on the Riviera Maya

Driving along the road we passed a number of small inns and haciendas – all closed and in terrible states of disrepair. It was soon clear to us that the heyday of the Ruta de Los Cenotes in Mexico was long over. However, we soldiered on, driving west in search of these swimming holes.

Our goal was to visit at least one open cenote and one closed one. Closed cenotes are essentially caves full of fresh water with a small access hole in the roof or on one side. Open cenotes have had their roofs cave in, so they are essentially small fresh water lakes.

Swimming platform in the Cenote La Noria

Laura had previously visited this area as part of a cenotes tour . As we drove on, we had the realization that some cenotes tours take visitors to private cenotes, not accessible to folks like us on a do-it-yourself, independent cenote tour.

Tree roots growing down into the water at the Cenote Verde Lucero

Our first stop of the day was at Cenote Verde Lucero. We paid our admission, parked the car, and headed to the platform area. I immediately headed down the stairs to get a feel for the water. It was cool, but felt good on a hot day. I walked out on the rope and balanced myself as I watched one of the local kids take to the zip line and drop effortlessly into the water. He was a pro. I thought: “I got this.”

People cliff jumping at the Cenote Verde Lucero into the water below

I climbed the ladder and walked over to the zip line. The zip line was nothing more than a sturdy handle bar that ran down a steel cable across the water. There was a trailing rope that set a maximum distance (and allowed for the handle bar to be pulled back). If you were still hanging on, the rope would stop the handle and you’d fall. Seems simple enough.

Lance on the zip line at the Cenote Verde Lucero on Riviera Maya's Cenote Trail

I grabbed the bar and off I went. I could hear yelling in Spanish. There was snap and I hit the water. My first sensation was the searing pain in my right arm. The wristband for our resort was gone (I realized that was going to cost me another $25), but my entire arm had a rope burn on it. As one of the guys was yelling, “You OK amigo?” I nodded. God, my arm hurt like hell. Thankfully, the water was very cooling.

It took me a minute to fully work out what happened. Evidently, when I grabbed the zip line handle, I got the trailing rope in front of my hands. When I reached the end of the line, the rope snapped back…along with my entire arm. I was lucky the injury wasn’t worse. After a two-minute pause to catch my breath, I went up and did the zip line again. This time with the rope behind my hands and dropping into the water before I reached the end of the line.

Woman paddling on a kayak in an open cenote in Mexico

Despite the near injury, we loved Cenote Verde Lucero. We loved that we had the place practically to ourselves even more. After an hour, we jumped back into the car and headed down the road.

We were deep in conversation about my stupid mistake and missed the dirt road at kilometer 19, which meant we drove all the way to end of the road in the town of Leona Vicario – about a 45-minute goose chase. We didn’t see any others. We couldn’t figure out how there weren’t any others on the route. We backtracked and realized our mistake.

Stalactites at Cenote la Noria growing down into the water

Many of the swimming holes on the Ruta de Los Cenotes are off the main road. Some are on private lands and not accessible to visitors, but some are on dirt access roads. Taking the dirt road at kilometer 19 to the south, after a few kilometers we came on the sign for Cenote La Noria. The side road to La Noria is pretty bad. If you’re in 4×4 or on an ATV, you’ll do fine. We had a nice little rental car and needed to take it slow.

Looking down into the Cenote la Noria

At Cenote La Noria, there were a couple of other Mexican families, but we were the only gringos to be seen. Closed cenotes like La Noria are much, much colder than the open ones since sunlight can’t reach the water to warm it.

La Noria was positively frigid, but it felt great on my arm (like nature’s ice pack). It took a long time to get used to the cold water, but our bodies did adjust. I enjoyed seeing a closed cenote to contrast with the open one.

A zip line in the Cenote la Noria with people swimming

At the end of the day, we had ourselves an authentic adventure. The cenotes along the route aren’t like the fancy ones further south. You won’t find broad, paved parking lots. There are no concession stands. The facilities on the Rute de Los Cenotes look well past their prime. But it’s a great way to get away from the crowds of Cancun or Playa del Carmen and cool off.

Located at about km 12. This is a large open cenote with a double zip line and a double tower to jump into the water. There are bathrooms, hammocks, a picnic area and a camping area.

Located just past km 17 on the left side of the road. It is approximately 200 yards off the road. This is an open cenote a short walk from the parking area. There is a single zip line and a swimming platform in the water. There is also a rope across the water to walk across with a guide rope above. The Cenote Verde Lucero is generally open from 9am-5pm.

Drive to km 19 and take the dirt road on the left. The entrance to Cenote La Noria is another ~3 kilometers down this road. This one is well marked by a small white sign on the right. Then take the really rough dirt road another 1500 meters (just shy of one mile, but it feels a lot longer than that). This is a closed cenote that has two entrances on either side of the parking lot. There is a large floating platform in the center and a short zip line located inside the hole.

Drive to km 19 and take the dirt road on the left. Drive ~5 kilometers (you will pass La Noria). There are large signs – you can’t miss it.

Pack your own lunch and snacks since there really aren’t facilities at these places. All sunscreen and insect repellent must be biodegradable! You will also want to bring your own towel and waterproof camera .

If you are without a rental car or want to do this as a guided cenote tour , there are many options.

There are many hotel and other accommodation options on the Riviera Maya. Check out some of the Riviera Maya hotel options. We’ve also had good luck with accommodations by renting an apartment in Playa del Carmen .

tour de los cenotes

My family and I spent 6 days in Merida with another family last week. Merida is a magical destination in Mexico. The people, the food, and specially the things to do there are amazing and unique!

If you visit Merida, besides the ruins, the Cenotes is a “must” in your activities and for sure, many people will recomend a few. Well, “Los 7 Cenotes” is something different, believe me. We visited 3 cenotes sites during our visit and this experience was “by far” the most spectacular. This is a 7-hour Tour experience that will blow away your senses! The place is gorgeous! It stands in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by vast nature. The house is a beautiful typical Mexican-like hacienda. Alicia Lopez (the co-owner, hostess and tour guide) gives you a warm welcome and offers coffee, natural juices, bread and fruit upon your arrival while she explains the specifics of the tour you are about to enjoy. The experience includes two cenotes dives, a bike hike to one of the cenotes, a zip line jump and food (fresh fruit, muffins, juices and coffee and of course the meal after you finish the tour). You have to experience every part of the tour as it comes, because each of them are unique. If I reveal the details of this tour I would ruin your experience. You have to live it! I can only tell you that you will spend 7 hours enjoying your sight, sound, taste, feel and smell like in no other place in the world. Your eyes will experience unique water and flora sights, including of course the amazing Cenotes; Your taste buds will combine fresh fruit an juices with natural elements and will also get the chance to try an ancestral Mayan ritual drink used for very special occasions; your ears will be pampered with exquisite music and natural noises along your tour; you will have the opportunity to smell ancient Mayan herbs and spices also used for ancestral rituals; and your body will experience the fresh water of the Cenotes. The second cenote offers an experience like no other (this is Alicia´s secret!). Believe me, this is unique and amazing, and Alicia will make every penny spent worth the trip.

tour de los cenotes

The excursion starts at the main house (which was a cattle ranch hacienda dating back to the 1800’s) They take you on a bicycle tour to visit some of their 7 Cenotes they have on the land. Depending on your level of adventure and needs, you can either take a leisurely cenote tour where you can swim and relax or you can jump off an 18 meter jump boarding board and face your fear of heights! They have ziplines that race across the land or even on that zips you into a cenote!

On our excursion, we opted for the adventure tour to challenge and enrich ourselves both physically, mentally and spiritually. Our first stop was to a magnificent cenote where you could jump from a ledge overlooking a drop of 18 meters! It is an assisted jump so really this is a mind game to face your fear of control and heights and just trust and let go. It was quite terrifying for me to be at that height and know I was going to willingly make the leap, but I also knew that I trusted the team and that I was perfectly safe. It took a couple minutes to let go and just do it, it was a second of fear and then a beautiful and slow ride down as the pulley assisted the free fall into the cenote. A truly memorable experience. Next we headed to the zipline which was not as high, but much faster and that was a blast! I realized, my sense of fear comes more from heights than from velocity. I think the zipline would be great for anyone, it was very fun!

Then we came back to the main house to hydrate with fresh juices and cold fruit and to get mentally ready for the “Leap of Faith” secret cenote experience. Because it is a secret, I can’t say too much about it, except for the fact that it is a very personal experience where you go into an underground cave cenote and it is pitch black. There you are left alone, and you must jump off the ledge not knowing how high and not seeing anything. This was a beautiful experience. All you hear is the sound of the water echoing around the cave. I went first and absolutely love it. That last thing I will say–because you must experience it yourself–is that it was hands down one of the most beautiful cenotes I have ever experienced. Absolutely a spiritual experience.

We ended the day with a wonderful traditional lunch of horchata or jamaica juices, sopa de lima, tacos de cochinita, dip of sikil pak and of course flan. We were serenaded by the grounds keeper/awesome guitar player and singer of Mayan Jaranas. And then we gathered together to finish the experience by the sacred Ceiba tree that was absolutely incredible. This tree has to be a least 400 years old and it gives shade to a huge area, it’s branches looked like full grown trees and its surface roots undulating and exposed. We all reflected on the days experience and were able to connect and be grateful together. I was a wonderful trip that I would absolutely recommend to anyone.

How to AVOID Cancun Seaweed & Sargassum in 2024

Need info about avoiding seaweed in cancun.

You’re in the right place if you’re worried about running into the pesky Cancun seaweed that’s been covering the shorelines along Mexico’s Caribbean Coast.

As someone who’s lived in Mexico since 2018 , I wrote this article to help you avoid the Cancun beaches seaweed issue, so that you have a nice vacation.

I’ve personally visited Cancun numerous times, and managed to avoid the seaweed in Cancun each time 🙌 and so can you.

Yes, there is seaweed in Cancun during certain months, but with a little research, preparation and planning, you can easily steer clear of it.

Remember, not all beaches are affected daily, so rest assured you can still have a fantastic time in Cancun even if there is some seaweed around.

Ready to learn everything you need to know about visiting Cancun and avoiding sargassum in 2024? Let’s dive in!

What is Cancun seaweed?

Cancun seaweed sargassum is a brown seaweed or brownish algae that washes up on the beaches in the Cancun area.

It originates from the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean, and recently, large amounts of sargassum have drifted towards Cancun’s shores.

This has caused concerns due to its unpleasant smell and tendency to accumulate in large masses.

The Cancun seaweed problem has also had an immense impact on Mexico’s tourism industry (and other Caribbean countries).

If you want to know more or need additional info about sargassum blooms, check out the Cancun Seaweed FAQ at the end of this article.

When does the seaweed season start in Cancun?

The Cancun seaweed season usually runs from   spring to fall .

Though keep in mind that sargassum isn’t predictable, so how much seaweed Cancun gets each year is unknown — as a best case scenario, it gets none this year!

In some years, the seaweed season in Cancun has started earlier in the year, around late February or early March .

It can last through summer, peaking between April and August , and tapering off in late September or October .

Some areas close to Cancun, like Playa del Carmen , Cozumel , Tulum , and Puerto Morelos, often see significant amounts of sargassum starting as early as February.

While there’s no way to predict this with 100% certainty, the seaweed is mostly gone by November — and not likely to return until late-February or early-March.

Why are Cancun beaches full of seaweed?

Cancun beaches are often full of seaweed, specifically sargassum, due to a combination of natural and human-influenced factors .

1 . Ocean Currents and Waves

The seaweed originates from the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt between Africa and the Caribbean.

Ocean currents and winds carry this seaweed across the Atlantic to the shores of Cancun.

2. Nutrient Enrichment

Dust from the Saharan Desert in Africa, upwelling waters , and river runoff, particularly from the Amazon River and Orinoco River, enrich the seaweed.

The nutrients from these rivers have helped the sargassum grow as much as tenfold in some years.

3. Climate Conditions

Higher sea temperatures, typical during the warmer months, also favor the growth of sargassum.

This leads to greater growth rates and larger masses of seaweed reaching the beaches in Mexico , South Florida, the United States, and beyond.

4. Human Impact

Factors like agricultural runoff and increased nitrogen content in the ocean, possibly linked to human activities, also contribute to the growth and proliferation of sargassum.

These factors combine to cause the frequent and sometimes massive influxes of seaweed that affect Cancun Mexico, and other parts of the Caribbean Sea.

How can you avoid Cancun seaweed beaches?

You can still enjoy Cancun, even if some beaches have seaweed on them — you just have to plan accordingly .

Yes, the sargassum odor and unsightly large seaweed on beach shorelines blocking the water have turned many tourists away in recent years.

Keep reading to learn about the Cancun Facebook groups, official webpages and Cancun webcam live streams that show the locations of sargassum in real-time (and semi-real time).

1. Check the Cancun Seaweed Forecast on Facebook

One of the best things to do in Cancun, Mexico, is hit the beaches. The best way to find Cancun beaches without seaweed is to use Facebook to get updates.

The seaweed situation can change daily, so you can get the best info here.

🌿 BEST CANCUN SEAWEED FACEBOOK GROUPS

Sargasso Seaweed Updates Riviera Maya and Sargassum Seaweed Updates (Cancun, PDC, Tulum) are both great groups to join before your trip to get updated info.

As with all Facebook groups, some people are very helpful, and some are very snarky. I always make sure to say thanks for the update to the helpful folks 😁

🌿 RED SARGAZO FACEBOOK PAGE

Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo is a page, not a group, so you can view it without joining.

You can also check post comments, as people leave updated photos of beaches to show the seaweed levels at different ones.

The Red Sargazo Facebook page is in Spanish, but they use self-explanatory graphics, like the one seen above, with colored dots that mean the following:

  • 🔴 Red Dot: Excessive levels of sargassum on that beach
  • 🟠 Orange Dot: Abundant sargassum on that beach
  • 🟡 Yellow Dot: Some sargassum on that beach
  • 🟢 Green Dot: Very little sargassum on that beach
  • 🔵 Blue Dot: That beach is 100% free and clear of sargassum

Cancun also has local clean-up initiatives around the ZOFEMAT , or Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone. This is the first 60 feet (20 meters) of beach above the high tide line.

For this reason, you might see a beach in the red, but crews might be working to clean it at that very moment.

This means there might not be much sargassum by the time you arrive since the map was last updated before the clean-up.

Also, many of these best Cancun beach resorts and Cancun beach clubs have crews that clear away the seaweed each morning.

⚠️ Note: As a visitor, please respect the locals from the resorts in Cancun and Riviera Maya who work tirelessly to keep the beaches clean for you.

2. Check the Cancun Seaweed Reports Online

Visit the Sargassum Monitoring site’s real-time Cancun Seaweed Report to understand better seaweed conditions and the best Cancun beaches to visit.

For those wondering if there is seaweed in Cancun right now, or if there is seaweed today in Cancun — this map can help!

Here, you’ll find the Cancun Seaweed Map (also called the Cancun Sargassum Seaweed Map), where you can get updated reports, beach by beach.

One of the great things about the beautiful beach town of Cancun is the abundance of beaches to explore. There are 14 miles (22.5 km) of beaches in Cancun!

If you find yourself at a beach with too much seaweed for your liking, simply head to another Cancun beach.

🏖️ Note: The link above lets you check current seaweed conditions in Cancun, as well as the seaweed problem in Tulum , Playa del Carmen, and other Riviera Maya beaches.

3. Check the Cancun Seaweed Webcams

Several popular hotels in Cancun, have live streams that can also be considered as Canacun seaweed cams that allow you to see certain areas in real time.

As the live cams don’t cover every beach in Cancun,  you might also want to engage with locals through Facebook groups for a full Cancun seaweed update.

That way, you can see the seaweed in Cancun today without worrying or having to forecast sargassum.

👀 LOOKING FOR MORE MEXICO SEAWEED LIVE STREAMS?

The Webcams de México site has cameras in several cities to help you find the best beaches without seaweed, like these:

  • Tulum live stream on Tulum Beach from Casa Malca Tulum Resort
  • Isla Mujeres seaweed live stream on Playa Norte Beach
  • Playa del Carmen seaweed live stream
  • Cozumel seaweed live streams on several popular beaches
  • Puerto Morelos seaweed live stream

4. Head to the best seaweed free beaches near Cancun

If you can’t find any seaweed free beaches in Cancun during your visit, you can always take a day trip and visit some of the best beaches near Cancun.

🏝️ ISLA CONTOY NATIONAL PARK

You can also take this day trip to Isla Contoy — a beautiful island oasis off the coast of Cancun, and a Mexico national park.

Isla Contoy is easily one of the best beaches in Mexico without seaweed, though you can only go if you book a tour (using the link above).

With miles and miles of coastline in the Yucatan Peninsula, there’s no need to fly to Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula for seaweed-free Mexican beaches!

If you’re struggling to find a seaweed-free spot during your vacation, trust me, there’s one near Cancun — including this small island which has never had a major seaweed problem.

🏝️ ISLA MUJERES & Cozumel Island

Isla Mujeres has some of the best beaches in Mexico in July to escape the Cancun beach seaweed problem.

Another option is Cozumel Island (especially the island’s west coast), though Isla Mujeres is much closer to Cancun at only 15-20 minutes away by ferry.

The beaches on these Mexican islands tend to be seaweed-free in the hot summer months.

Even if they have some seaweed, they usually have much less seaweed than Cancun beaches like Playa Delfines or Playa Gaviotas — two of the most visited public beaches among Cancun tourists.

These popular beaches have seen their fair share of seaweed piles, even in the middle of winter, though the worst months are still usually in summer.

 🏝️ MEXICO GULF BEACHES

If you have trouble finding the best seaweed-free beaches in Caribbean waters, another option is to visit the Gulf of Mexico side of the country.

There’s FAR less sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico beaches vs Caribbean beaches, and places like El Cuyo and Puerto Progreso Beach near Merida make great options.

Of course, these aren’t beaches close to Cancun, so you might have to alter your travel plans to visit these beaches of Mexico.

5 Best Things to Do if There’s Sargassum in Cancun

Visiting Cancun during seaweed season when there’s large influxes of sargassum expected?

Or, did you check the sargassum forecast and see there’s a continued presence of sargassum seaweed during your stay in Cancun?

If so, don’t worry! When there’s a large quantity of sargassum and smelly seaweed floating around on Mexico’s beaches, you still have the options listed below.

1. Swim in the Seaweed-Free Cancun Cenotes

Visiting cenotes is one of the most popular things to do in Cancun. Since they don’t connect to the ocean, these cenotes are seaweed-free all year.

🔎 What are cenotes ? Cenotes are deep sinkholes found in the lush jungles throughout Yucatan Mexico. There are about 6,000 cenotes in Mexico.

They mostly stem from the same clear water source, the Sistema Sac Aktun System, a massive freshwater river flowing beneath the Yucatan Peninsula .

La Ruta de los Cenotes, meaning the Road of Cenotes or the Route of Cenotes, are some of the best cenotes near Cancun .

They are all along one road, which is located just off the main highway (Carretera Cancun-Tulum, Highway 307) in the beach town of Puerto Morelos

The best ones include Cenote Zapote EcoPark, Cenote Siete Bocas, Cenote Azul and Cenote Jardin Del Eden (Cenote Ponderosa).

💧 Best Cancun Cenote Tours

As there aren’t any cenotes in Cancun itself, you will have to venture outside of town to swim in the Mexico cenotes.

There aren’t any cenotes reachable by bike tour, so you’ll need a rental car or taxi ride to get you there — which is why I recommend booking a tour.

To book, check out these best cenote tours from Cancun . Many take you to multiple cenotes in one day, or additional attractions, like ATV rides in the jungle .

2. Enjoy a Cancun to Chichen Itza Day Trip

Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and a bucket list site for many Cancun travelers.

Taking a tour with a local guide is the best and safest way to visit Chichen Itza from Cancun .

Most tours leave early in the morning and include stops at nearby cenotes, and the famous colonial city of Valladolid — one of the Mexico pueblos magicos (magic towns).

The ancient Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza are the largest archeological site in Mexico.

With about two million annual visitors, Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan Ruins in Mexico City share the distinction of being the most visited archeological sites in Mexico.

Chichen Itza was a major pre-Columbian city and political and economic hub for the Mayan civilization .

It was even declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 because of its historical importance.

3. Take a Cancun Cooking Class or Cancun Food Tour

When you just “can’t even” with the Cancun seaweed, why not take a hands-on cooking class that includes extras like a tequila tasting or a market visit?

These incredible chefs use local ingredients and even some ancient cooking techniques. You’ll learn about the food’s origins and try a new delicious dish.

Want to try a Mexican Cooking Class and Market Tour with a Local Chef ?

Or would you prefer this fun and educational Mexican Food Cooking Class that includes enough tastings to fill you up?!

Don’t feel like cooking? There are plenty of food tours that you can also take, like this Taco Tour , which includes stops at four taco restaurants Cancun locals love.

There’s also this Cancun City Tour and Taco Crawl where you’ll enjoy tacos, tequila and cervezas , and do some souvenir shopping in Mercado 28.

4. Snorkel One of the Largest Barrier Reefs in the World

Jump on a boat and escape the Cancun Mexico seaweed problem while you head out to one of the largest coral reefs in the world.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (AKA the Great Mayan Reef) offers amazing snorkeling opportunities.

Being out in the ocean away from the shore means you won’t encounter large piles of seaweed because the experienced boat tours know how to avoid them.

Additionally, some nearby Cancun cenotes offer clear-water snorkeling opportunities. Snorkeling is the perfect escape when the seaweed sets in at the beaches.

Tons of snorkeling tours in Cancun will take you to the spectacular reefs and cenotes along the Mexican Caribbean Coast.

5. Visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Sian Ka’an, meaning “origin of the sky” in the Maya language, is a 1.3 million-acre (526,000 hectare) natural reserve in Mexico.

Visitors and locals flock to the nature preserve, which is also a land and water park, to experience its ecological diversity and crystal-clear waters.

Home to dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, fish, and endemic birds, Sian Ka’an was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

These boat tours are the best way to get to Sian Ka’an, as the roads are difficult to navigate and require an off-road vehicle.

Also, with so much to see in the water, a boat tour is the only way.

You can float through the canals, explore in a kayak, or take advantage of the popular fly-fishing opportunities.

Either way, Sian Ka’an Biosphere is one of the area’s most unique attractions — because Sian Ka’an is seaweed-free all year.

Understanding the Cancun Seaweed Seasons: FAQ

How long does sargassum seaweed last.

The Cancun sargassum season usually runs from   spring to fall — though summers tend to be the hardest-hit months.

However, one of the worst things about the sargassum in Cancun and all Mexico is that it’s unpredictable.

Also, it varies from year to year so there’s no way to know when the sargassum begins each year until it starts actually arriving.

In the past few years, the sargassum seaweed has started showing up around February , and can stay until October .

Between April and August , you see the most seaweed on the beaches, as it tends to be at its peak during the hottest months of the year.

How long the seaweed stays on a beach depends on how quickly it’s cleaned up, the weather, and the ocean currents.

If people don’t keep the beaches clean, and the weather and water currents don’t carry it away, it can stick around for a long time — sometimes weeks or months.

What are the worst months for sargassum in the Caribbean?

The worst months for seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean are typically from April to August .

During these warmer months, there’s usually the most build-up of sargassum on the beaches.

What time of year is worst for seaweed in Cancun?

Summer — There’s usually an increase in sargassum and a lot of seaweed in Cancun during the hottest months of the year.

While seaweed can be unpredictable to an extent, you can always expect sargassum season to arrive in peak force when the Caribbean Sea is warmest.

The warm and hot waters are prime breeding grounds for sargassum growth , and tend to bring a mass of sargassum with them.

During a major sargassum year, you’ll have high levels of seaweed and sargassum mats, but there’s always some public beaches in Cancun without seaweed to enjoy.

Does Cancun still have a seaweed problem?

Yes — Cancun still has a problem with sargassum seaweed, though the Mexican government is making strides against it.

The severity and distribution of seaweed can vary greatly from day to day and from beach to beach, making it challenging to predict exactly where and when the beaches will be affected.

Local hotels and authorities have taken some measures to manage and clean up the sargassum Cancun, but the extent of these efforts varies.

Where does the sargassum in Cancun come from?

The sargassum seaweed that affects Cancun primarily comes from the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt .

This belt is a massive region of seaweed growth stretching between the coast of West Africa and the Gulf of Mexico.

This area receives nutrient-rich runoff from major rivers like the Amazon and the Orinoco.

Nutrients are also brought to the surface by oceanic upwelling and from Saharan dust from this massive desert in Africa.

The seaweed is then carried across the Atlantic by ocean currents until it reaches the Caribbean and the coasts of places like Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico .

What months does Cancun not have seaweed?

Generally, Cancun experiences the least amount of seaweed from late November to January .

During these months, the sargassum presence is usually minimal, making it a better time for clear beaches.

However, the exact seaweed season Cancun timing can vary yearly due to ocean currents and temperature changes.

What beach in Cancun has the least seaweed?

Playa Langosta and Playa Las Perlas are often reported to have low sargassum levels, making them good options for clearer beaches in the Cancun area.

There’s also Playa Coral, Playa Mujeres and Playa Gaviotas Azul near Punta Cancun — however, to really escape the seaweed in Mexico, head to Isla Mujeres Island.

Playa Norte, located on Isla Mujeres , is known for having the least amount of sargassum seaweed among beaches close to Cancun.

Due to its geographic location and favorable water conditions, it often remains relatively clear of seaweed — even during peak sargassum season!

Located just 15-20 minutes from Cancun by ferry boat , this makes it a great choice for beachgoers looking to avoid seaweed conditions in Cancun.

Why is there algae in Cancun Mexico?

There is algae in Cancun because of the  sargassum , a species of macroalgae that thrives in warm Caribbean waters and floats in the sargasso sea.

During summer months, the macroalgae pushes its way to the warmest waters, sometimes leaving miles of shoreline coated with algae and seaweed.

With government funding and support from local businesses, there are ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of sargassum seaweed Cancun Mexico sees each year.

While you may continue to see seaweed on Cancun’s beautiful beaches, the new comprehensive containment plan efforts should make a noticeable difference in future years.

Are the beaches in Cancun full of seaweed?

No  — All beaches in Cancun are NOT full of seaweed, and there are always sargassum-free beaches near Cancun to enjoy.

While some beaches may have seaweed along the shoreline, there are plenty of beaches in Cancun with no seaweed.

⚠️ Note: Wondering about the current seaweed conditions in Tulum as well? Check out this article to see the quantity of seaweed on Tulum’s beaches.

Mexico’s government, local authorities, and the tourism industry in Cancun are working on ways to deter seaweed from getting to the popular shorelines.

These include  installing a sargassum barrier   several miles offshore, and using the sargassum for other purposes like farming and research.

Hopefully these initiatives will stop sargassum’s stronghold on the local tourism industry, and prevent a large amount of seaweed from hitting the beaches.

Final Thoughts: How to Avoid Cancun Seaweed & Sargassum

As visitors navigate the challenges posed by seaweed Mexico, staying informed and adaptable remains important.

In collaboration with dedicated cleanup initiatives, local authorities continue their efforts against sargassum to ensure enjoyable beach experiences.

With resources like Cancun Seaweed Reports and real-time updates from seaweed Mexico Facebook groups , travelers can make informed decisions about their coastal excursions.

By prioritizing flexibility and exploring alternative attractions, such as the Cancun cenotes and cultural tours , visitors can make the most of their time in Cancun — even with seaweed Mexico concerns.
