Classic Costa Rica

I recently returned from a vacation in Costa Rica and it was truly a trip of a lifetime. From the lush rainforests to the stunning beaches, Costa Rica is a nature lover's paradise. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Arenal Volcano National Park, where I hiked to the top of the volcano and was rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle. The Arenal volcano was a real highlight, it's so impressive and it's surrounded by a beautiful landscape. I also had the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the Manuel Antonio National Park, where I saw a wide variety of wildlife including monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds. The park is really beautiful and the wildlife is really diverse. The beaches in Costa Rica are simply stunning, I visited Hermosa beach, Jaco and Manuel Antonio beach, all of them are beautiful with clear water, white sand and surrounded by lush vegetation. Hermosa beach was my favorite one, it's a great spot for surfers. In addition to the natural beauty, Costa Rica also has a rich cultural heritage. I visited a coffee plantation in Tarrazu and learn about the process of making coffee. It was really interesting and I had the opportunity to taste some of the best coffee I've ever had. Overall, I highly recommend a vacation in Costa Rica to anyone looking for a mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation. The country has so much to offer and I can't wait to go back and explore more. The people are friendly, the country is safe and the weather is perfect.

Natural Highlights of Costa Rica National Geographic Journeys Tour

Natural Highlights of Costa Rica National Geographic Journeys

The one-week itinerary in Costa Rica gave us a great overview of the flora and the fauna. The guide was excellent and all participants were very pleasant and enthusiastic. The hotels are OK (except the one in La Fortuna- a moldy dive). Despite National Geographic partnership, I did not see any difference with other GAdventure Tours. Most activities and meals were not included, which significantly raise the costs of the trip.

Essential Costa Rica - Package with Manuel Antonio National Park

Overall Our trip went great with only a few concerns. I had to ask for the itinerary 3 days before the trip and a temporary one was provided. But the final was presented to me at the airport upon arrival. We booked the superior hotels and they were wonderful and food was great. All the transportation worked out, but the land to boat transfer to Torteguerro was confusing. Better communication would have been helpful. The guides were all fabulous! We saw wildlife at all the parks. Our Destination Services agent was helpful. Although, there was a misunderstanding when I requested an extra day at Manuel Antonio and she booked us at San Jose instead. I also learned that the "Optional Activities" are Completely on your own--as in-- 'find you own activity and outfitter and reserve it'. Given what I know now, I would have built in 2 extra days in the schedule due to hours of long ground travel between the destinations.

Costa Rica\'s Natural Wonders Tour

Costa Rica's Natural Wonders

This tour covered alot of ground and really showed you the country. As a result, some of the bus trips were quite long and over very challenging roads. However, our guide Tayron made them pass much more easily. He was a fountain of local knowledge and shared about his own experiennces and family history. This added so much more personality to my trip. The hotels were clean and welcoming especially Cala Lodge in Monteverde. The only exception was Hotel Punta Leona. This property is very tired and was far too large to move around easily. The shuttles were inconsistent making moving luggage from your room a chore. The beaches made up for this weakness though. Playa Blance was paradise. Food at every location was plentiful and tasty. There were no bad meals and plenty of excursions included. For the price this was one exceptional trip. If you go, be patient and prepare to have lots of adventures.

Picturesque Solo Costa Rica Tour

It was a good solo travel trip. BUT plan ahead. INDUS drops you off at hotel and then you are on your own in SAN Jose. We did get a map museums were closed on MOnday. research things to do, It can be extremely helpful to start researching your destination before you travel. Find out information about the city you are traveling to along with the area you will be staying in, so you can discover which stores and restaurants will be close by, get to know your way around the neighborhood, and familiarize yourself with attractions you want to see. Your journey will go smoother if you come prepared with ideas — and it will be a fascinating experience to see them come to life! The shuttle drivers were usually on time. Sunday was a busy travel day from Manuel Antonio hotel Tabula tree back to SAN JOSE PARK INN so beware of that. bus driver was late due to traffic almost an hour.

What people love about Costa Rica Tours

Overall the tour was good. The CEO Katherine was wonderful. People in our group are very friendly. What we liked most was the beaches at Manuel Antonio National Park, Also the guided walking tour at the park to explore a variety of amazing wildlife was Great. Hot Springs in La Fortuna and Horseback riding in Monteverde were enjoyable, The amenities in the hotels could be better.
our intrepid guide was so informative and helpful. the whole experience was just wonderful. A nice sampling of several areas of the country
It was a fantastic experience! We saw some of the most beautiful places! It was so nice to just relax and be shuffled from one beautiful place to another! Bernie our tour guide is a fantastic man! He never stops smiling!

arenal volcano in la fortuna costa rica

Costa Rica is now one of my favorite countries, and this EF Ultimate trip packs a lot of adventure and some relaxing beach time into ten days of fun.

Below are the highlights from each day of my time on the Costa Rica Adventure trip.

This itinerary can change anytime, and the activities below were just what we did on my specific trip run.

Some of our activities were moved around to give us more time to *rest* after our night out on NYE.

*optional activities provided by EF Ultimate Break

**optional activities provided by my TD

Day 1: Arrive in Costa Rica

  • Fly into San Jose (SJO)
  • Meet your tour director and check into your hotel

If you book your own flights, make sure you land on the right day, as EF’s itineraries include the flight days. You must land in San Jose on Day 1 of this trip.

Day 2: Fruit, Kayaking, and Welcome Dinner

  • Fruit tasting
  • Pineapple tour**
  • Lunch at an organic farm
  • Kayaking on Lake Arenal

EF Ultimate Break Costa Rica Hotels

one of the hotels in costa rica with a pool

The hotels on this trip were nice for the most part, except for the rooms at the hotel on night one, which were clearly outdated and not clean.

Every night, I had one roommate, although, on Essential trips like this one, you can have 5+ travelers in the same room.

The location of the hotels could also improve, especially in Playa Arenas, where we had to drive 30 minutes to the nearest town (Jaco) and nearly two hours each way to Quepos (for the national park and catamaran cruise).

Hotels on my specific trip

  • Holiday Inn Aurola – San Jose (Night 1)
  • Eco Arenal – La Fortuna (Nights 2-3)
  • Atardecer – Monteverde (Nights 4-5)
  • Hotel Arenas – Playa Arenas (Nights 6-8)
  • Casa Conde San Jose – San Jose (Night 9)

Food in Costa Rica

The food in Costa Rica is good, but I found it wasn’t easy to find authentic food on the trip. Fruit, rice, and beans are popular in Costa Rica, especially for breakfast.

For lunch and dinner, expect to find sandwiches, seafood, meat, and salads.

Due to schedule restrictions, many meals on the trip are included or only offered at one place. You must be flexible with your tastes and eat what is offered or bring snacks to fill you up.

Food restrictions:  Vegetarians and people with other food restrictions (dairy-free, gluten-free, etc.) found it easy to find food to meet their needs.

Costa Rica Adventure – Included Activities

ON A CATAMARAN AT SUNSET with ef ultimate break in costa rica

There are a lot of fun, adventurous activities included in this EF Ultimate trip. You can always opt out of them, but they are included in the price of your tour!

  • Hot Springs
  • La Fortuna Waterfall
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Hike
  • Coffee Tour

Optional Add-ons

There are some optional activities that you can add on at checkout or before you depart at an additional cost:

  • White Water Rafting the Sarapiqui River
  • Costa Rican Catamaran Cruise
  • Monteverde Night Hike

On my trip, everyone did the Catamaran Cruise, nearly everyone went white water rafting, and just over half the group did the night hike.

These activities cost extra; you can book them when you book the trip or add them to your account after booking.

Additional Activities

me squatting in front of pineapples

My tour director, David (the BEST TD EVER), also allowed us to enjoy some additional activities during our tour, which we could do during our free time (aka, we didn’t miss out on anything else to participate).

Each tour cost $25 in cash, and we had to decide if we were going the day before! I took the pineapple and chocolate tours.

Here’s what was offered:

  • Pineapple tour:  explore a pineapple farm, pick and eat fresh pineapples, and enjoy pina coladas.
  • Chocolate tour:  learn how chocolate is made, from tree to tasting
  • Crocodile tour:  hop on a pontoon boat and look for crocodiles and birds in the wild

Your TD may or may not offer additional tours, but these are some examples of what might be offered!

NYE with EF Ultimate Break

My trip to Costa Rica was a special departure for New Year’s Eve , which EF Ultimate Break offers for many of their trips. The New Year’s in Costa Rica: Costa Rica Adventure trip included an extra dinner on NYE to celebrate the holiday.

After, our tour director took us to a local bar to experience how Costa Ricans celebrate.

Overall Rating: 5/5

Donning a Panama hat and exploring Casco Viejo in Panama City

Zipline excursion in Veragua Rainforest

Map for the Costa Rica & Panama Adventure tour

Board your flight to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Hope you brought some sunglasses, because your future in Central America is bright.

Today's highlights:

  • Meet an EF representative and fellow travelers as they arrive at the airport.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.

It’s been real, San José, but it’s time to get out and explore the beauty of Costa Rica. You’re heading east, to Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast. But first, an adrenaline boost.

  • Hop on the bus and stop in Veragua Rainforest for a heart-pumping zipline excursion.
  • Settle into Puerto Viejo and enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with your group.

Cahuita National Park has it all—jungle, sandy beaches, and a vibrant coral reef. Explore on your own or join the optional excursion to get up close and personal.

Find out what makes Costa Rica so special on a rainforest walk and coral reef snorkeling adventure.

It’s just what the doctor ordered…a free day in the Caribbean. Go all in on some R&R or join in on one (or both) of the optional excursions.

Free time suggestions

Playa Puerto Viejo: Escape to the golden sands of this nearby beach for a day of swimming, sunning, snorkeling, sleeping, and any other alliterative words you can think of.

Jaguar Rescue Center: Tour this center dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of a range of animal species. And no, the center does not actually house any jaguars, despite its name.

Caribbean dance experience (extra cost)

Learn how to dance salsa, merengue, and more with a local Caribbean hip-moving expert.

Chocolate experience (extra cost)

Visit a cacao farm to learn how the plant is harvested and transformed into drool-worthy chocolate.

New country alert! Today you’ll cross into Panama, which is exciting for a lot of reasons, but mostly because Panama hats are a thing.

Bocas del Toro bike tour (extra cost)

Take in your surroundings by bike on a guided tour of Bocas Town and make your way to Bluff Beach.

When in the Caribbean, do as the Caribbean-ites (yeah, not a word) do: hit the beach! Bocas del Toro is made up of several islands, and today you’ll check out one of the larger ones, Isla Bastimentos.

  • Explore Old Bank, a colorful town on Isla Bastimientos
  • Kick back and relax on one of the nearby beaches.

Now that you’re comfortable with the whole kick back on the beach thing, it’s time to become a true expert in leisure during a free day.

Carenero Island: If you just can’t get enough of these Caribbean islands (we get it), take a quick water taxi ride to nearby Carenero, which offers all the classic beach activities plus some scenic hiking trails.

Bluff Beach: This is Isla Colón’s largest and most accessible beach, so if you’re looking for a no-brainer activity, go here. The waves can get pretty gnarly, so keep an eye out for surfers doing their thing.

Sunset cruise (extra cost)

Cruise around Isla Colón with drinks and snacks, then take a dip in the water as the sun goes down.

Next stop, the Boquete Region, considered by many to be the coffee capital of Panama. Look up about 11,400 feet—you might see Volcán Barú, a big ol’ volcano and Panama’s highest point.

  • Grab a window seat on the bus as you journey to the Boquete Region.
  • Tour a coffee plantation with your Tour Director.

You’ve only seen the western side of Panama—let’s change that. Time to fly east to the country’s buzzing and modern capital, Panama City.

  • Head to the nearby airport for your flight to Panama City.
  • Arrive in Panama City and settle in to your new hotel.

Casco Antiguo (also known as Casco Viejo) is the city’s Old Town, and it tops all the lists of things to do in Panama. UNESCO even named it a World Heritage Site in 1997, so you know it’s legit.

  • Experience the charm and history of Casco Antigo with your Tour Director.
  • Gaze out at the calm waters and boats passing through Panama Bay.
  • Share some laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included Farewell Dinner with your group.

¡Adiós amigos!    Translation: Goodbye, friends. Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?

What travelers say about our tours to Costa Rica

Travel tips for costa rica trips.

Costa Rica might be small, but it’s packed with things to do and see. It’s home to amazingly diverse scenery, animals, altitudes, and weather conditions that you can experience on our Costa Rica tours.

You could spot wildlife in the magical Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on our  Highlights of Central America tour  or take a dip in the natural hot springs at the foot of the mighty Arenal Volcano on  Costa Rica: Rainforests, Volcanoes & Wildlife .

Looking for more? Read  5 reasons to love Costa Rica .

Costa Rica is located just north of the equator and boasts moderate temperatures year-round. Instead of four seasons, Costa Rica has just two: a dry summer from January through April and a rainy winter from May to December. Some areas can even get over 260 inches of rain every year. That’s 21 feet!

Costa Rica’s summer months are drier, which makes it a popular time for visitors. This is the season for spotting sea turtles in the sand or exploring the rainforest. That’s why we recommend choosing the summer for our Costa Rica trips.

Costa Rica has over 500,000 different species of plants and animals. While visiting Costa Rica, you’ll have the chance to see birds, monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, frogs, coatis, and two- and three-toed sloths. Costa Rica is known for its birds, which include toucans, parrots, herons, macaws, hummingbirds, and resplendent quetzals—which are considered to be the most beautiful bird in the world. It’s also home to over 10,000 plants and trees, including more than 1,200 species of orchids.

You’ll want to make sure you bring a variety of items when you travel on one of our group tours to Costa Rica, because the weather can vary widely between the rainforests and beaches. Here are a few Costa Rica trip “musts”:

  • Rain boots and raincoats.  You’re visiting the rainforest, after all.
  • Lots of layers.  Temperatures rise and fall with the different elevations, so this will help you keep comfortable.
  • Binoculars.  That way you can see all the incredible wildlife and make the most of your Costa Rica tour.

You may want to stock up on cash before departing on any of our Costa Rica trips. Many local vendors do not accept credit cards, and it can be hard to find an ATM. American dollars are widely accepted throughout the country, so you don’t have to stress if you run out of Costa Rican cólones!

Check out our  Costa Rica Travel Guide to learn more .

Apart from us planning everything for you, one of the biggest reasons to go on Costa Rica guided tours is the local guides. They know every site from top to bottom, and they’re so passionate about everything they share. Nothing compares to seeing everything from a local’s perspective on our Costa Rica tours!
