A travel trailer with a built-in generator is a great way to bring the comforts of home with you when you answer the call of the open road.

Especially if your ideal RV adventure style calls for a lot of boondocking away from RV parks and campgrounds.

While solar panels and other green energy systems are handy, they are rarely capable of keeping up with a family’s energy demands.

Purchasing a travel trailer that is prepped for a generator is nice, but it is still an additional expense, and it can also leave you wondering if the generator is truly compatible with the travel trailer or if it has the ability to meet your electrical needs. 

If you want to have power at your fingertips when you need it, no matter where you are, then you are probably wondering what are the best travel trailers with a built-in generator?

We started by looking at the Forest River XLR Boost and the Northwoods Arctic Fox 22G. Both are two great camper trailers with a generator on today’s market.

Though they certainly aren’t the only generator-equipped travel trailers worth investing in.

To find the best model to meet any off-the-grid camping needs, we decided to broaden our search.

This included reviewing models that appealed to small families, large families and traveling couples who want to unplug from the grid, but still, be able to turn the lights on.

Do Travel Trailers Come With Built-In Generators?

A lot of travel trailers come prepared to connect to a generator of some kind, but only a select number of models come with one built-in.

There are also some RV dealerships that might offer to install a generator as an optional upgrade. 

How Big Of A Generator Does My Travel Trailer Need?

If all you want to do is power some basic electric appliances in your travel trailer and a handful of personal electronics, a generator rated to produce between 2,000 to 3,000 watts will be sufficient.

If you want to run a lot of lights, a large TV, you love to microwave a lot of meals, or you need to run the rooftop air conditioner a lot, then you might want to prioritize a larger generator.

Especially if you like to boondock off the grid for multiple days at a time. 

Do I Need An Inverter To Power My Travel Trailer With A Generator?

An inverter essentially converts the DC power created by a generator into the AC electricity that most RV lights and appliances run on.

A lot of the best travel trailers with a generator built-in come with an inverter included in the unit. 

Many can be set up to work in tandem with the generator to throttle it up when electric demand increases, and throttle it back down again.

There are a few benefits and drawbacks to consider before investing in a travel trailer with a built-in generator.

• Wattage Capacity – A lot of built-in generators have high wattage demand, which can seamlessly run your RV lights and appliances without strain. 
• Running RV Air Conditioner – If you frequently camp in hot humid conditions, a travel trailer with a built-in generator will let you run most rooftop air conditioners for hours on end without tapping into and draining the RV’s house batteries. 
• Operating On The Move – A travel trailer with a built-in generator is usually engineered to vent and exhaust out of the trailer according to safety specs. This lets you drive down the road with it running, which can be handy if you need to power a traditional refrigerator with a compressor, or you need to charge your RV house batteries to full charge before reaching your next destination. 
• Easy Operation – With aftermarket generators you often need to use a cumbersome pull-start and you have to provide it with a fair amount of maintenance. Most built-in generators are engineered to be easy to use and typically start with just the press of a button. 

Built-In Generator Cons

• Higher Repair & Maintenance Costs – Since they are built into the travel trailer and securely mounted in place, most built-in RV generators are hard to access. This ultimately adds to the labor time and cost when they do need to be repaired, adjusted, or routine maintenance.
• Limited To RV Use – When you buy an aftermarket generator, you can pull it out of the RV when you get home and connect it to your home in case of a power outage. 
• Potential For Noise – Even a four-stroke generator will still be heard inside the RV itself when it’s built-in. Whereas an aftermarket RV generator can potentially be moved away from the RV, or positioned behind some sort of sound block to give you quiet operation when sleeping.

There are a lot of travel trailers that come with generator prep, but you have to purchase an aftermarket generator or you pay the dealership markup to have one installed.

Instead, we tried to focus on some of the best travel trailers and toy hauler travel trailers that come with a generator installed in the standard package.

Along the way, we tried to pick out high-quality models of different sizes to meet the needs of families large and small.

Especially if you are the type of family that likes to sleep with a fan on for a little background white noise.

This travel trailer is also a convenient toy hauler. This means you can take your ATV, UTV, or dirt bikes with you in the rear cargo bay, while still having enough fuel in reserve to run the generator.

There is also the entire cargo bay, the bathroom, and a buffer wall separating the queen bed master suite in the front from the modest amount of noise the generator produces while it’s running. 

3. The Northwoods Arctic Fox 22G

Are built-in generators more common on toy hauler travel trailers.

You typically see more built-in generators on toy hauler travel trailers than you do on standard travel trailers.

This is even more likely to be the case if the toy hauler has an auxiliary fuel tank that lets you refuel dirt bikes, and ATVs, as well as the generator, powering the interior of the travel trailer itself. 

Are Built-In Generators Loud?

Built-in generators with an enclosed muffler are quieter than you might expect.

Though since they are directly installed into the frame of the travel trailer you can’t move them away.

Selecting a model that has buffer walls and an enclosed muffler can reduce the noise to being little more than what you would get from the air conditioner fan running, which is generally not loud enough to cause a problem sleeping.

Most motorhomes come with an onboard generator, so campers can use their appliances even when they are not plugged into shore power. However, most towable RVs do not come with onboard generators.

Another brand of toy haulers with the option for onboard generators is the Keystone Fuzion Impact Edition. The Fuzion Impact travel trailers range from 28 feet to 37 feet long.

With the optional upgrade, these RVs come equipped with an Onan 4000 watt gasoline generator or an Onan 5500 watt gasoline generator.

KZ Sportster

What is the Best Travel Trailer RV Generator Size?

The best size generator for a travel trailer depends on what you intend to power with it. Most RVers need a generator to run their air conditioner and lights. Others want to run electric grills, microwaves, television, radio, etc.

If your A/C is 13,500 BTU, you need a generator with a starting wattage of about 2800-3000 with a running wattage specification of 1500-2000 watts.

What To Look For In A Travel Trailer RV Generator

When it comes to purchasing a portable generator suitable for RV camping , there are several things you need to consider before you make that purchase.

Noise Level

One of the first things you need to consider is how much noise the generator will make. At many campgrounds, there is a limit on just how much noise there can be. Most campgrounds will not tolerate a generator that makes more than 65 to 68 decibels of noise.

When looking at the specifics of the generator you are thinking of buying, look for one with a decibel rating of less than 68.

Power Output

Next, you need to consider just how much power the generator puts out. To choose the right size RV generator, you’re going to need to know just how much power your travel trailer will require.

Typically, you are only going to run a few things off the generator. That might include lights and air conditioning if it’s summer.

The Champion generator we chose above puts out 3800 running Watts, sufficient for running A 15000 BTU RV air conditioner.

Reliability and Durability

The next thing you need to consider before buying a portable RV generator is reliability and durability. You don’t want your generator to crap out on you when you need it most. So it’s especially important to choose a brand that is recognized in the industry and has a good warranty.

Finally, the last item you need to consider is the price. The more expensive the generator, the more features it has. The more power that is put out, usually the quieter it is.

This is where you have to determine if getting more power and more features and a quieter generator is worth the extra price.

If a quiet generator is more important to you than power output, you may consider the Honda EU2200I . This Honda generator is a 120-volt 2200-watt quiet portable inverter generator. It is rated a 57 dB, less than a normal conversation.

This makes the Honda EU2200I our top pick for one of the best quiet generators for travel trailers.

The dimensions of this portable generator are 20 x 11.4 x 16.7 inches. It weighs just 47 pounds and uses gasoline as its fuel.

If you need more power than the Honda can provide, you can connect to the generators in parallel, giving you up to 4400 watts of power.

Depending on the load, this generator can run from 4 to 9.6 hours on a single gas tank.

The inverter technology in this Honda generator means you get stable, clean power in a smaller, lighter package.

As a result, when you use a hitch you need to be very careful with where you drive and the hills you choose to drive up.

The best way to avoid this problem is to purchase a carrier that has an angled shank. This will make it so it so your trailer can go up steeper hills than with the flat versions. However, you will still be a little more limited than with other storage methods.

Mike, I enjoy your YouTube channel. On mounting a generator such as a Predator 3500 (105 lbs.). I like the stability aspect of the A-frame mount, concerned rear mount may bounce too much. What is your thoughts if the camper comes factory installed with 300 lb hitch? With cargo carrier, generator and fuel a 200 lb estimate for total weight is safe. Too much with the cantilever action going on back there? The reason for the back is any one of the three models we are about to purchase the 50 amp input is at the rear or rear street side. Thus I can make a 6 ft. cord for short stops (rest area, boon docking, Harvest Hoist, etc) and not deal with the 50′ cord. Would enjoy hearing experiences from others doing it this way.

I have a 27 ft. Jayco travel trailer and have two Honda generators each weights 40 lbs. I need to mount these on my trailer and have hopefully found some solutions with the above articles. Easier, safer method. Weld a 24×14” plate to bumper , with proper supports. Your good to go. My 3000w unit weighs 75lbs. This method is perfect and costs around $100!

Before purchasing your generator, you should think about the power output you’ll need. If you get by without many electronics, you can probably buy a smaller portable generator. These are generally less expensive and have a lower power output. 

If you have a somewhat high power demand, you’ll need a generator with moderate to high power output. These are usually larger in size and come with a higher price tag.

Your RV’s power requirements will dictate the minimum size for your portable generator.

1. Honda EU2200i Portable Inverter Generator

Honda makes some of the best portable generators out there. They’re notoriously quiet, fuel-efficient, and produce high-quality power ideal for RVing and camping. 

The Honda EU2200i Portable Generator offers a good amount of power for a reasonable price and operates at 48 to 57 decibels. It’s also small enough to fit in many travel trailer storage areas or easily in the bed of a pickup or in the cargo area of an SUV.

It’s equipped with Honda’s patented CO-MINDER technology, which automatically shuts the generator down before carbon monoxide (CO) levels pose a threat. It’s fuel-efficient and can run for up to 8.1 hours on a single gas tank.

2. Champion 3500 Watt Dual Fuel Inverter Portable Generator

If you need a little more power, the Champion 3500 Watt Dual Fuel Inverter Portable Generator is another good option. The Champion name is well-known and respected, and this generator is still small enough to fit in many storage areas, the bed of a pickup, or the cargo area of an SUV.

The unit makes about as much noise as the Honda generator, operating at roughly 59 decibels from a distance of 23 feet. Because it’s a dual-fuel design, it can operate on gasoline or propane right out of the box, although run time will vary based on your fuel choice. 

It runs for about 7.5 hours using gasoline at a 25% load. On propane, it will run for about 14.5 hours at a 25% load. While it’s approaching 100 pounds, it’s equipped with handy roller wheels, making maneuvering the generator into a specific position easy.

3. Cummins Onan P4500i Inverter Portable Generator

Cummins is another highly trusted brand in the world of RV generators. Many of their models are built into Class A motorhomes, but they also make several excellent portable inverter generators. 

The Onan P4500i portable generator is comparable to the Champion generator in size and weight while offering a bit more power for your RV appliances and electronics. With a 3.4-gallon fuel capacity, this efficient generator can run for up to 18 hours at a 25% load. 

Its noise level is rated at 52 decibels, and it comes with a remote-starting capability that allows you to fire it up from more than 100 yards away. If you’re traveling to mountainous regions, remember you’ll need a separately sold carburetor kit to operate this generator above 2,000 feet of elevation.

4. Generac IQ3500 Portable Inverter Generator

It can also be wired in parallel with a second P2500i generator if you need double the power while maintaining the portability of two smaller generators. It’s double-insulated to run at a rating of 52 decibels and provides 10 hours of running time at 25% load on its one-gallon fuel tank. 

Ideally suited for charging smaller electronics, it also features a small rubber mat for placing items while charging. In terms of ports, you’ll have one 20-amp AC outlet, one 12-volt DC outlet, and two five-volt USB ports to choose from. 

If you plan on RVing in a used motorhome where you won’t have shore power, ensure you can keep your travel trailer’s batteries charged. A small generator, like one of the ones shown above, is perfect for your camping needs.

RV Generator Adapters

You may need an adapter to connect your camper to the generator. Generators come with various outlets, which may (or may not) match up with the shore power cord on your camper. 

The two most important things to watch out for are amperage rating and plug style. If the amperage rating of the camper does not match the generator receptacle or if the generator uses a locking receptacle, you will need an adapter.

Great post! Caravan Generators truly illuminate the path of nomadic living. Your blog beautifully captures the significance of these power sources that infuse our mobile adventures with energy and possibility, no matter where we roam.

I think a dual-fuel inverter generator is the only way to go. How do I know how big a unit I need for my trailer? Is the power requirement posted on the side of the trailer or at least in the owner’s manual? Say for example it is 25 ft, with a 13,000 btu AC, plus the usual hot water heater, microwave, etc. I suppose if the gen is a little light you could turn off the AC to run other heavy loads if nec.

We’ve had the Honda EU2000 for 12 years and there’s no doubt it’s amazing. However, we needed more power for running the AC during our summer retirement trips. We chose the Champion 3500-Watt Portable Inverter Generator with the remote start Item No. 88537 over the Honda EU3000 for the power and remote starter. After a full summer of 6 months on the road, the Champion worked flawlessly. We don’t regret our decision – it’s a nice unit.

RV generators are a major investment, and choosing a reliable one is essential to enjoying your rig when you’re off the grid. It used to be that that meant gas, or maybe a dual-fuel generator, but in recent years battery-powered power stations and solar generators have begun to approach the power consumption of some RV campers. Which one is right for you will depend on a number of factors, including what appliances you are trying to power, your budget, the number of days you plan to be off grid for, and your tolerance for noise. Below, I dive deep into the power considerations for the best RV generators to help you make the right choice for your needs.

Determining Your Power Needs

Before choosing one of the best RV generators, you first need to determine what your power needs are. These can vary considerably, depending on your setup. To start, here are a couple of major considerations to have front of mind: 

• Is your RV working off of a 12 volt DC system? This is very common for RVs, as 12 volt systems are typically more efficient. In these instances, you’re going to want to pay special attention to the amperage of your RV generator.
• Are you planning to run an air conditioning unit? These things are energy hogs, so if yes, plan on a bigger (and more expensive) unit.

Amps are the speed at which electricity is flowing out of your generator. The number of potential amps that you need from your generator depends on the cumulative needs of the appliances you plan to use in tandem. For instance, if you plan to use one appliance that needs 30 amps and one appliance that needs 15 amps in tandem, you’ll need a generator that’s capable of handling 45 amps. But if you’ll always be using those appliances one at a time, the most you’ll need is 30 amps. 

Voltage is essentially the pressure at which electricity is flowing out of your generator. You’ll need to find out the highest voltage you need in your RV before choosing a generator. Lots of RVs run off of 12 volt DC systems, but you may have an appliance or two, such as your microwave or air conditioner, that needs more (typically 120 volts in AC). 

The length of time that you plan to run your appliances for will impact how large of a generator you need, and whether you should stick with traditional fuel generators or if you can transition to one of the best solar generators. This is typically expressed in watt hours. To determine your watt hour needs, you can use the following equation: 

• Amps x hours = Amp hours
• Amp hours x volts = watt hours

So, if you plan to use a 30 amp appliance for two hours, that’s 60 amp hours. If that appliance requires 12 volts, that will be 720 watt hours. If you plan to use a 20 amp appliance for a half hour, that’s 10 amp hours. For an appliance that uses 12 volts, that would be 120 watt hours. 

Again, running an air conditioner for a long period of time will result in major power consumption. An AC unit typically uses about 15 amps (not including the startup amps) on 120 volts. If you ran one for four hours, that would use up 7,200Wh.

If you’re already a fan of Jackery’s simple and intuitive power stations then pairing their Explorer 2000 Plus with one of the best in-class solar panels for camping , the SolarSaga 200W, is a no-brainer. Not only does this power station feature a plug for an RV, allowing you to easily power all those 12V appliances, it also stores enough energy to power the average setup for a day. If you’ve been looking to upgrade to a quieter generator for camping, then this is an easy choice.

During testing, the size and weight of the Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus was sometimes  an issue for me, a woman on the smaller side. If you have back problems and don’t need this kind of power, I suggest looking elsewhere. While there is a handy telescoping handle that allows you to pull it over flat distances fairly easily, you’ll likely still need to pick it up periodically to get it into your car. The telescoping handle was also so short that I sometimes had to lean over when pulling it along.

I originally tested the SolarSaga 200W solar panel as a full setup, with four panels plugged into a single power station. This test showed the full power of the array, which registered 650 watts of power generation on a sunny (albeit hazy) day. I retested a single panel in tandem with the rest of the units in this review more recently, and under completely clear skies, the panel was even more impressive: It registered 184 watts of energy coming from a single panel. If you don’t have much time to recharge your power station from the sun, then the full setup with all four panels is a no-brainer. (More recent testing of newer panels showed a slight drop in power; however, it is unclear if this is because of natural variation or drop in the product’s efficiency. Either way, this is still a best-in-class panel.)

It is, though, a little complicated. Each panel comes with a carrying case and a cable that connects back to the two DC ports on the Explorer 1000 Pro. If you see a math problem here, that’s correct: You’ll also need two of the Jackery Solar Panel Connectors, which, strangely, are not included in the purchase price. Two of these can be used to double the number of panels you can connect to the Explorer 1000 Pro. 

Setting up and taking down this many panels takes some time, but I was impressed by how easy and intuitive it was. That’s because Jackery streamlined the number of ports on each unit, making it that much clearer what cable connects to what unit in what port. 

While at first glance there might appear to be a disconnect between the charging time capabilities of this setup and its battery life, it’s worth keeping in mind that conditions are not always optimal. One of the things that impressed me most about these units is the panel’s ability to generate electricity in lowlight conditions. Even in complete shade—dusk fast approaching—a single SolarSaga 200W was generating a 6 watt input.

Gas generators have long been a mainstay of the RV crowd. In his roundup of the best gas generators , Andrew Waite called out the Honda EU2200IC as one of the more lightweight and portable options around, particularly useful for RV campers with smaller rigs where they might need to physically lift the unit when setting up at a new boondock site. Here’s what he had to say: “Like the WEN, this Honda portable generator is also a small generator. At about 21 x 12 x 20, it’ll easily fit in the trunk or truck bed. It’s also a quiet generator, emitting 57dBA at a full load and just 48dBA at a quarter load. The running wattage is 1,800, and 0.95 gallons of fuel can generate up to 8.1 hours of runtime at a quarter load––enough for the entire workday at the construction site.”

The Goal Zero Yeti series is a powerful, durable line of power stations that provide some of the most in-depth information of any power station I’ve looked at, giving RV campers a lot of information about their power use. However, it also has one of the most complicated user interfaces to navigate (I tested the Goal Zero Yeti 1500X as part of my test of the best solar generators ). To start, when the unit is plugged into a power source, a light blinks blue continuously until it is charged; then it switches to solid blue. If you are in the same space as this unit when it is charging, this is very distracting.

Next is the three buttons above the display—which read “unit,” “light,” and “info.” Unit is fairly straightforward—it toggles the input and output measurements between volts, amperes, watts, etc. This is pretty handy if you’re curious about how much power a given device is chewing through. Next is light—on other power stations, this button turns on an actual light, which is useful if you’re trying to see what you’re doing in the evening hours. The Goal Zero, however, does not have a built-in light. This button turns on and off the display screen showing the power supply. The info button only seemed to turn on the display (not off)—it was unclear what other use this was meant to have.

Interestingly, despite having one of the most powerful AC ports in my test (2000W with a 3500W surge), there was only space for two plug-ins. Most of the time, I suspect this will be plenty for people (and it does help to cut down on the unnecessary juice being lost out of these ports), but others might find themselves digging out a powerstrip to make up for the lack of ports. 

One of the more unusual features of the Yeti 1500X is a top lid, which has storage for charging cables, or anything else you want to throw in there. This proved to be surprisingly useful while camping, when stray cables can go missing with surprising regularity.

Underneath, it also has detailed descriptions of all of the power limitations of the various ports, plus evergreen reminders about not letting your power station get wet—all in semi-legible font. Surprisingly that can’t be said for any of the power stations in my test (including the Anker SOLIX F2000 , which despite having the largest surface area strangely didn’t include this information at all). There is also a second 8mm port under the lid as well as a 12 volt HPP output port. 

A testament to Yeti’s claim of 1,500 watts of power was my ability to actually charge the Anker SOLIX F2000 using the Yeti generator. It supplied 1,385 watts through a single AC port, which was higher than anything else I tested, partly due to this being the only combination where that was available. The maximum input capability of the Yeti 1500X is 150V from AC power, and no unit is capable of that many volts. The icon showing how much power was remaining did stay consistent.

When you need to fire up your generator, the only thing worse than it failing to start is finding out that it can’t produce adequate power. With the Honda EU7000is, you should never have to worry about either of those problems. Honda’s small engines are just as reliable as the brand’s cars, and this home backup generator is strong enough to power multiple appliances or your RV. 

The 389cc engine generates 5,500 running watts and 7,000 surge watts. Using fuel injection instead of a carburetor, it can run for 16 hours on the 5.1-gallon tank at a 25 percent load. You’ll be able to power things like a full-size refrigerator, a gas- or oil-burning furnace (yep, those still need electricity), and lights. The EU7000is has wheels, but you’ll still want to keep it on paved surfaces because it weighs 263 pounds.

Aside from the workout of rolling this generator out of the garage and into the driveway, Honda made it very user-friendly. You can start it with the push of a button, control it with an app, and monitor its fuel level with a gauge instead of opening the tank every time. Safety features like circuit breakers, GFCI outlets, automatic carbon monoxide shutoff, and warning lights take the stress out of using this generator.

The EU7000is is a significant investment even before wiring your house for it, and it’s even more expensive than a lot of comparably sized inverter generators. But it’s also built to an incredibly high standard and comes with a bunch of features that make it easy to use. In the long run, you’ll be glad you spent a little extra. If you really want to set yourself up right, buy this for your home or RV and something small like the Jackery Explorer 300 for life on the go. —Alan Clemmons

Best Budget: Generac GP3000i

The Generac GP 3000i is a versatile inverter generator that’s perfect for powering a few electronics while you’re RV camping. It’s light enough for one person to carry, but still powerful enough to handle certain appliances in addition to your personal electronics. When my neighborhood lost electricity for a few days one summer, I used a GP3000i to run my chest freezer long enough to save about a hundred pounds of meat from spoiling.

The heart of this inverter generator is a 149cc engine that generates 2,300 running watts and 3,000 surge watts. Its 1.06-gallon tank will run the engine at 50 percent capacity for 4.5 hours. One person can move this 60-pound generator by its carrying handle, but it can be a little cumbersome. Plan on storing it someplace where you don’t have to carry it very far to use it. The system is simple and reliable, but Generac includes a three-year residential use warranty, just in case.

Using the Generac GP3000i is simple and straightforward. Start-up and shut-down graphic instructions are clearly printed on the top of the housing. The pull starter is more labor-intensive than electric ignition, but it’s incredibly reliable and doesn’t require much effort. Even after sitting idle for months at a time, my GP 3000i starts within three or four pulls. A clearly marked dial switches between choke (for cold starts), run, and off. You can let the engine idle at a constant speed or switch on the economy mode to let it raise or lower engine speed to match the power demand from the outlets.

The GP 3000i is a little bit underpowered for home backup, but my experience proves that it can power select appliances in an emergency. Around the campsite, it’s just right. Having multiple outlet types—including two USB ports—makes it great for charging everything from a pellet smoker to your phone at the same time. —Scott Murdock

Westinghouse WGen7500 is a compact engine designed to power critical needs. It has a 420cc four-stroke engine with an air-cooled overhead valve design for more efficient operation. The automatic low-oil shutdown technology protects the engine when low oil level is detected, saving the engine from damage. It also meets EPA and CARB emission standards, which is better for the environment. The push-button key fob starter allows you to get the generator operational from up to 260 feet away.

When you need a durable, efficient portable gas generator but don’t need a monster, this model should be a consideration. It’s well designed with numerous features for home or camp use, and relatively easy to load on a trailer or in a truck bed. Things to Consider Before Buying an RV Generator

One of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make when choosing an RV generator is what kind of fuel you’ll want to use. There are pros and cons to the various options. Solar can work for individuals in especially sunny climes and have more limited power needs (no air conditioning unit). Individuals who will only be away from a hookup for a day or so at a time can also get away with simply charging their unit up when they have power and using it without any kind of a solar boost.

But if you plan to be off grid for days at a time, then you’ll want to ensure you have access to enough power to keep your RV going. In these instances, fuel-powered generators can be a great, if loud, option. Keep in mind that while some traditional generators run only on gas, others also run on either propane or natural gas, or sometimes all three.  

RV generators, especially solar generators, can run thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. For many people this is a serious investment. Spend the time and do the research to make sure you are making the right choice. When possible take advantage of resources offered by the manufacturers to better understand if the RV generator you are considering is powerful enough (or too powerful) for your needs. 

RV generators can vary in the level of noise they produce, from being so loud as to make conversation difficult if not impossible to virtually silent. If you plan to only run your generator while cooking or for limited times during the day, noise might not be an issue. However, if you plan to run your RV generator for extended periods of time this could become a determining factor. 

Some RV generators are light enough that they can be moved by virtually any adult; some are distinctly two-person (or more) jobs. If you will need to move your RV generator on a semi-regular basis, then keep an eye on the weight.

Maintenance

All RV generators will need to be taken care of, but expect fuel-based RV generators to require more maintenance and care than electric models. 

The size generator that is best for RVs will depend on your electrical needs, especially if you plan to run an air conditioning unit. 

A 3,500 watt generator should run an RV air conditioner, but double-check the voltage (typically needs to be 120 volts) and the ampere to confirm. 

The best way to determine this is to consider what the most power hungry appliances you plan to use in tandem are, and then look to see what their ampere requirements are.

Some folks have been able to place an RV on top of their generator, particularly if they are situated on an incline with greater space on one end.

If you already have plans for your truck’s bed space and would like to install it somewhere else, your RV may have a designated generator compartment.

The generator compartment in my fifth wheel is at the front under the hitch, and that’s where we put our portable Honda while we’re on the road.

Because the Honda is smaller than the manufacturer’s generator, we secure it with ratchet straps and place a towel below in case there are any leaks.

If you don’t have a separate generator compartment, you may be able to put it in one of your other RV storage compartments if you have enough room, or you may be able to store it within the RV beneath your bed, dinette, or other furniture.

If you do decide to put it inside your trailer or in a compartment, ensure sure it is securely fastened so it does not slide about during turns or breaks.

Because I’m nervous about possible leaks, I’m hesitant to keep my generator indoors.

#3. Hitch Mount or Bumper

You can always install your generator on the exterior of your RV if you’re like me and don’t want to take any chances.

Getting a rack that attaches to your rear bumper is one of the simplest options.

It’s also, however, one of the most deadly.

Just go to a review site for one of these hitches and you’ll find endless accounts of rear bumpers being torn apart because they weren’t built to handle that much weight – not to mention the hazard to other cars if your generator comes off on the highway.

Before you contemplate this alternative, you must first determine how much weight your back bumper can support.

By using a frame-mounted hitch instead of a bumper-mounted hitch, you may prevent losing your back bumper (and your generator).

If you need to access the propane tank, you’ll have to remove the rack, but otherwise, they are a wonderful method to secure your generator for travel.

Let’s speak about safety best practices now that you know how to secure a generator outdoors and when traveling.

Carbon monoxide is one of the few things that makes me nervous.

You may think it’s crazy — after all, there are worse things like snakes, scorpions, and black water tanks that refuse to empty – but hear me out.

#1. Carbon Monoxide Is A Poisonous Gas.

Carbon monoxide is tasteless and odorless, and it causes unconsciousness and asphyxia.

It does this by replacing oxygen in your red blood cells, and if breathed in big enough quantities, you may not even experience shortness of breath or dizziness before passing out.

To prevent breathing carbon monoxide, make sure your generator is well-ventilated and kept away from where you spend the most of your time.

You should have a working detector inside your RV, and if your neighbors are near by, you should pay attention to where they store their generators.

Let’s move on from the doom and gloom and speak about lights.

You’ll want to make sure the area surrounding your RV and generator is adequately illuminated at night to deter prospective thieves, as well as to prevent you from tripping over it when you walk outside to investigate that noise you heard.

Many solar lights will operate, and you won’t need to turn on your generator to use them.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an RV Generator With Remote Start

While there are countless factors you could consider when choosing an RV generator, we’ve compiled a list of the 9 key features every RVer should consider before purchase.

Starting with one of the most important factors, power output.

1. Power Output

The power output of a generator, which is expressed in watts is crucial, as it determines how much power the generator can deliver, and how many appliances and devices it can run at the same time.

So before purchasing any generator, you need to assess your RV power needs and choose a generator that provides enough wattage to accommodate those needs.

This is often easier said than done though, because how are you supposed to know how much wattage and electricity you need to run your RV?

In general though, if you have a 30 Amp RV, you should choose a generator with at least 3600 rated watts of power, and if you have a 50 Amp RV, you should choose a generator with at least 6000 rated watts of power.   

And this leads us to the next important factor to consider, which is the generator’s Amp rating.

2. Amp Rating 

RVs as well as RV generators are usually available in either 30 or 50 Amp versions. 

So it’s important to determine the amp rating required by your RV’s electrical system to ensure compatibility with your RV generator and to avoid overload .

And also to ensure the plug and outlet match as 30 and 50-Amp RVs use different power outlets.

As 30 Amp RVs require a three-prong NEMA TT-30R Plug, which has one 120-volt hot wire, a neutral wire, and a ground wire.

While 50 Amp RVs require a four-prong NEMA 14-50P Plug, which has two 120-volt hot wires, a neutral wire, and a ground wire.

3. Fuel Type

Portable RV generators usually run on gasoline, propane, or both , with cheaper options usually running on gasoline and more expensive options running on both gasoline and propane, called dual-fuel generators .

So when choosing a generator it’s important to consider you’re camping style and whether it warrants the extra cost of a dual-fuel generator.  

As gasoline offers a higher power output and better availability, while propane offers longer and easier storage.

I will say though that having dual-fuel capability does provide a lot of flexibility and can come in handy in a pinch, even if you plan to run the generator mostly on gas .

4. Run Time/Fuel Efficiency

Another important factor to consider when choosing a generator is its run time and fuel efficiency.

As it can get very annoying if you’re constantly having to fill the generator every few hours.

So look for a generator that offers at least 8 hours of run time on a single tank of fuel .

As this will provide the most usability and flexibility while camping.

Plus, it will also let you get a full night’s sleep, while the generator is running, if you’re boondocking in an area that doesn’t restrict generator hours.

Rember though, a generator’s run time is greatly affected by the load it’s under.

For example, if a generator has a run time of up to 8 hours, under a 50% load, you might only have a run time of 6 hours or less, if the generator is under a 75% load.

5. Noise Level

A quieter generator is always better than a louder one, all else being equal, however, it’s not always that simple.

As many things can affect a generator’s noise level, including its size, its power output, its design, and the load it’s under.

Also, quieter generators tend to cost more than louder ones.

So you not only have to factor in how much power you need when choosing a generator based on noise level but also your budget.

If you’re looking for a good generator noise level benchmark though, for 30 Amp RV generators try to keep the decibel rating under 70, and for 50 Amp RV generators try to keep the decibel rating under 80 .  

Don’t be surprised though if the generator is louder than advertised under normal camping circumstances.

As advertised decibel ratings are usually achieved by taking readings 25 feet or more from the generator while under a light load.

While portability isn’t always a top concern around generators, for RV generators it’s certainly something to keep in mind.

Because unlike a backup home generator or a shop generator, you will more than likely be moving this generator around quite frequently.
