Toddler with spina bifida warms hearts after showing his dog he can walk
An adorable little boy is spreading smiles across the globe after a video of him celebrating his first steps alongside his dog went viral.
"Look, Maggie! I'm walking, Maggie!" Roman Dinkel, 2, can be heard telling his pup in the video.
The video of Roman has since racked up millions of views on Facebook .
"He's everybody's best friend," said Whitney Dinkel, the toddler's mom. "He could make even the grumpiest person smile."
The Dinkel family has three children and lives in Overland Park, Kansas. When Whitney Dinkel was 20 weeks pregnant with Roman, doctors diagnosed him with spina bifida. While in utero, he underwent a surgery meant to improve breathing issues and the functional movement he'd have in his legs after he was born.
"Before he was born, we were told that there was a chance that he wouldn't be able to walk," Roman's dad, Adam Dinkel, told "Good Morning America." "[We were] scared, confused on why this was happening. And fear is really the big kicker, because you want all your children to have a wonderful life."
Roman was born on May 5, 2016, and with the help of chiropratic and physical therapy, he persevered and started using a walker one year later.
Just this week, the toddler used his crutches on his own and took his first steps independently.
"He's a warrior," Adam Dinkel said.
Roman's adventures are shared on the Facebook page, "Defying Odds: Roman's Journey." Roman's videos garner comments from millions who say that his infectious personality has improved their moods and changed their lives for the better.
The Dinkels hope Roman's videos will also help shed light on spina bifida.

2-year-old who overcame the odds and learned to walk inspires millions
By Jeff Glor
August 8, 2018 / 7:35 PM EDT / CBS News
Two-year-old Roman Dinkel was diagnosed with spina bifida, a defect in an embryo's developing spine, after an ultrasound at 20 weeks.
"We just expected to hear the normal things — this is the size of the head, this is the size of his feet, all those fun things, but what we heard was he had extra fluid on his brain and extra fluid on his spine," Roman's mother Whitney Dinkel said.
Despite the odds, his parents were determined to persevere. Roman actually had an operation before he was born to increase his chances of being able to walk.
"I had to let him fall a few times so he'd know I wouldn't be there to catch him, and he had to learn how to catch himself," Whitney said.
Perhaps that's why, when he finally did walk after days of practicing, Roman was so excited to show the family dog, Maggie, what he could do. Roman's mom was excited too. She posted the video on Facebook and in just hours, people around the world were sharing in Roman's joy. Mom and Dad have received non-stop messages.

"From random people telling us their story, you know, how they were depressed, or you know, how they were suicidal, or how they were going through these medical situations and to see that he influenced them in a positive way to change their mindset and change their view it's just so heartwarming. It feels like he just gave hope to so many people with a seven-second clip."

2-year-old defies the odds, learns to walk despite spine condition
- BY Cody Cepeda
- August 9, 2018
One 2-year-old has inspired thousands of people all over the world for overcoming the odds. Roman Dinkel from Huntsville, Missouri was diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect where the baby’s spine and spinal cord don’t develop or close properly inside the mother’s womb, thus causing a gap in the spine.
Roman was discovered to have spina bifida during his 20-week ultrasound as per CBS News in Aug. 8.
“We just expected to hear the normal things — this is the size of the head, this is the size of his feet, all those fun things,” Whitney Dinkel, Roman’s mother, was quoted as saying. “But what we heard was he had extra fluid on his brain and extra fluid on his spine.”
Roman, however, has come far. A Facebook page called “Defying Odds: Roman’s Journey” documents Roman and his little triumphs, such as being able to walk by himself. The page is managed by his mother Whitney who regularly shares pictures and video clips of Roman walking around on his own with the help of his crutches.
In a 7-second video clip shared last Aug. 1, Roman can be seen walking down the hall of their home. As he inched along with his crutches, he told their black poodle, “Look, Maggie! I’m walking, Maggie!’
The clip has since gone viral, amassing 23 million views and 260,000 thousand likes in less than 10 days.
On Aug. 8, the page also shared a throwback video of Roman walking for the first time with his walker back in 2017.
“I share this one year ago today,” wrote the Facebook page. “This was the first day Roman got his walker. He shocked us all when he actually started walking in it!”
Roman and his family were met with an outpouring of support from people the world over. After receiving many messages from people who want to help Roman, parents Whitney and Adam created a GoFundMe page in Roman’s name.
“This money will go towards extra medical expenses, medical equipment, and to [Roman’s] personal bank account,” they wrote. ” We would also like to donate a portion of the proceeds to Spina Bifida of greater Kansas City.” NVG

Scientists aren’t really sure how the defect is caused by but believe that genetic and environmental factors act together to cause the condition. It is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. In Roman’s case, during a prenatal ultrasound, the family discovered he had extra fluid on his spine and his brain. The parents were determined to persevere despite the odds, which is why while in utero, Roman underwent a surgery meant to improve the functional movements he’d have in his legs after being born, as well as breathing issues.

Toddler with spina bifida will trick-or-treat without crutches this Halloween
Roman Dinkel will dress as Luigi this Halloween.
Roman Dinkel, the 2-year-old boy who inspired millions with his determination and infectious personality, is now walking without crutches.
When Whitney Dinkel was 20 weeks pregnant with Roman, doctors informed her that he had spina bifida. Doctors performed surgery on Roman while he was in utero, hoping it would help him breathe and give him functional movement after birth. It was possible he'd never walk.
But on Halloween , Roman will trick-or-treat without his crutches, aka his "sticks," and has already started practicing, as seen in a new video shared first with "Good Morning America."
"When he took off without the sticks, he gained this level of confidence where he was like, 'Wow I can do this,'" Adam Dinkel of Overland Park, Kansas, told "GMA." "He started taking more and more steps, and he really doesn't use them at all anymore."
"Roman is a miracle," he added. "We get to witness a miracle every single day in our house and the moments just get sweeter and sweeter."
Roman first captured hearts across the globe after a video of him celebrating his first steps alongside his dog went viral.
"Look, Maggie! I'm walking, Maggie!" Roman can be heard telling his pup in the video.
The video of Roman has since racked up millions of views on Facebook.

Boy With Spina Bifida Walks On Crutches And Shares Excitement With His Best Mate Dog
As he takes his first steps, roman tells his dog: “look maggie i’m walking maggie”.
Jess Hardiman
Watch the heartwarming moment a young boy with spina bifida manages to walk with his crutches, telling his dog: "Look Maggie! I'm walking Maggie!"
The incredible clip was posted by 29-year-old Whitney Dinkel, who wanted to share the moment her son Roman took his first steps.
Two-year-old Roman, who lives in Overland Park, Kansas, was born with spina bifida - which the NHS website explains is a birth defect that occurs ' when a baby's spine and spinal cord don't develop properly in the womb', causing a gap in the spine.
The condition can make it hard for children to walk, and can even lead to paralysis.
Roman was diagnosed with myelomenigocele - the most severe of the four types of spina bifida - during Whitney's 20-week ultrasound. He received surgery while still in the womb in order to maximise his chances of walking.
Little Roman eventually managed to walk after days of trying.
"I had to let him fall a few times so he'd know I wouldn't be there to catch him, and he had to learn how to catch himself," Whitney told CBS News .
Roman has learnt to walk using a number of devices, including the red crutches you can see in the video above, as well as a walker.
Since his mum posted the footage, the clip has since gone viral - with many people on social media commenting on how proud they were of Roman's achievements.
"After all the worst things that I've seen on the news and on my timeline today - this has really made my day," one person wrote.
"He's so adorable and I'm happy he's excited about learning something most of us take for granted every day! I cried typing this!" another said.
Someone else said: "As someone whose learned to use forearm crutches to go up and down stairs, the balance and muscle memory is hard work and involves many spills.
"This little dude is fearless. Great job, family."
In fact, Whitney and Adam - Roman's father - have received many messages from people explaining how touched they were by the video.
"From random people telling us their story, you know, how they were depressed, or you know, how they were suicidal, or how they were going through these medical situations and to see that he influenced them in a positive way to change their mindset and change their view it's just so heartwarming," Whitney said.
"It feels like he just gave hope to so many people with a seven-second clip."

Toddler With Spina Bifida Defies Odds And Goes Viral Walking For The First Time
2-year-old Roman Dinkel is as cute as a button. But that’s not the only reason he’s become a viral sensation. It’s because of the incredible moment when this toddler with spina bifida walked for the first time. This little miracle is defying all the odds and inspiring thousands!
2-year-old Roman Dinkel was diagnosed with spina bifida in utero before he was even born. Doctors broke the news when Roman’s mom, Whitney Dinkel, was 20-weeks pregnant.
RELATED: Brain-Dead Toddler's Miraculous Recovery Makes Medical History
During this time, doctors performed a surgery on little Roman to help his breathing and the functional movement in his legs after birth. Still, doctors warned Roman’s parents that their little boy may never walk.
“When we first got our diagnosis, we didn’t know what the future held for Roman,” Whitney explained. “The doctor could only tell us what the book says. And based on his lesion, the book says that he’ll be paralyzed from his knees down.”
But Whitney and her husband, Adam, decided to hope for the best. After all, our God is a God of miracles!
Toddler With Spina Bifida Walked
After Whitney gave birth, Roman underwent physical and chiropractic care. Eventually, he even started moving around with a walker.
But then, this brave toddler started using crutches. And that’s when he defied the odds and surprised everyone by taking his very first steps!
Thankfully, cameras captured the amazing moment. Roman’s tiny voice is enough to melt your heart. And hearing him excitedly tell his 4-legged best friend Maggie about his major accomplishment had my heart soaring.
“Look Maggie! I’m walking Maggie!”
In no time, Roman became a viral sensation. The precious video of when this toddler with spina bifida walked for the first time has been viewed over 124 million times.
And now, Roman even has his very own Facebook page where his fans can follow his inspiring journey. His parents also want to get the word out because when an in utero diagnosis of spina bifida comes back, so many parents opt to terminate the pregnancy.
“We want to show parents this is an amazing life,” Roman’s dad, Adam, said.
Roman is such a blessing, both to his family and this world. This little miracle is reminding us all to never give up hope. Just because the world says you can’t, doesn’t mean God won’t say you can!
Be sure to put a smile on someone else’s face by sharing Roman’s story.
