11 Best Riviera Maya Excursions For Your Next Trip

Sharing is caring!

Get lost in the world of historical ruins (worth the wait for that selfie!), catamaran tours, mystical cenotes, and more with these unforgettable Riviera Maya excursions.

Mexico’s Riviera Maya is a Mexico traveler’s favorite just about any time of year.

This hot spot in the Yucatan Peninsula is known for its stunning seas, jungle, and gorgeous archaeological ruins that make for excursion opportunities galore.

While living in Playa del Carmen for a few months in 2022, I really got to know this beautiful region of Mexico and am already planning my next trip!

From day trips to some of the best cenotes in the Riviera Maya or discovering more hidden places along the coast, you definitely won’t be starved for choices on things to see and do here. Read on to find out more about some of the best tours and excursions in the Riviera Maya.

Where (and What) Is the Riviera Maya?

What’s called the Mayan Riviera today used to be casually referred to as the “Cancun-Tulum Corridor”. The area is 75 miles long, starting from Puerto Morelos (a beach town 18 miles from Cancun Airport ) and it goes down the Caribbean coast to laid-back Punta Allen to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere. The biosphere is one of the many excursions you can plan on your trip to the Mayan Riviera.

Apart from Puerto Morelos, the Riviera Maya consists of Playa del Carmen, the adventure island of Cozumel , Puerto Aventuras, Tulum , and Akumal, where tropical nature escapes abound.

A Little Bit About the Maya People

The development of the region dates back over 4000 years ago, with the Preclassic Maya period recorded beginning at around 2000 BCE. The Maya civilization spread across what’s now the Mexican states of the Yucatán and Chiapas. Outside of Mexico, the empire consisted of Belize , Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Historic ruins from ancient cities and temples can be found throughout these former Maya lands.

While there are many Maya languages (32 officially in the language family), only one is simply called the “Maya” language. Yucatec Maya is what you’ll most likely hear spoken in the Riviera Maya. There’s also Tzotzil, which is the common language you’ll find that’s spoken down in Chiapas .

Fun fact : Do you know where the word “Yucatán” comes from? Some historians think it means “I’m not from here” in a local Maya language. There are a few theories floating around about the origin of the name if you want to do a little deep dive.

11 Unmissable Riviera Maya Excursions

This list of the best tours and excursions in the Riviera Maya has a mix of recommendations for solo travelers, family travelers, couple travelers, and sustainable travelers who want to mix fun, adventure, and some history on their trip. The tours mentioned below are easy to book whether online or in-person and a guaranteed great time in the Riviera Maya. Let’s dive in!

snorkeling in mexico is a great riviera maya excursions

Snorkeling in the Riviera Maya.

1. Visit the MUSA Underwater Sculpture Museum

Cost: starting at $47 USD

Located between the Cancun Hotel Zone and Isla Mujeres, MUSA is an underwater marvel. This non-profit initiative was built within Cancun’s National Marine Park and features over 500 educational sculptures that guests can admire from under the water, whether it be by a glass bottom boat or on a diving or snorkeling tour. Get ready to be amazed.

There are a handful of tours and excursions to choose from at the MUSA, including :

  • Diving tours (with or without certification)
  • Snorkeling tours of various galleries and reef
  • Glass bottom boat tour of the Punta Nizuc gallery
  • Underwater jungle tour of the Nichupté Lagoon to see some of the sculptures and the reef life

Tours leave from either Isla Mujeres or Cancun.

The MUSA truly mixes art, conservation, history, and underwater exploring. What more could you want in a Caribbean adventure?

If this seems like the excursion for you, make sure to check out the MUSA website for more information about the different ways to explore this underwater Riviera Maya excursion.

diving off of a boat in mexico

Boat trips are a great Riviera Maya excursion.

2. Scuba Diving in Cozumel

Cost: starting from $52 USD

Ready to explore more of the underwater world? One of the best places for scuba diving is off the coast in Cozumel. This island is a quick 30-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen and home of the reef as well as some of the best scuba diving in all of the Caribbean and Mexico. Many travelers say that the waters are much clearer for scuba diving and snorkeling in Cozumel compared to Playa del Carmen.

Travelers can book their scuba diving adventures from either Playa del Carmen or Cozumel. There are so many diving companies in the area, from Discover Scuba to PADI and more.

Don’t have your diving certification? You can still scuba dive in Cozumel with a professional diving instructor as there are diving tours that cater to first-time divers available. This Dive With Christina course includes a 3-hour course, 1 dive, and full diving gear.

Some hostels in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel have lots of information on diving in the area, so if you’re already in the area consider paying them a visit to get the latest information.

man diving into cenotes in Mexico

Cenotes in Riviera Maya.

3. Visit Some Riviera Maya Cenotes

Cost: starting from 50 MX pesos (depends on transportation costs and cenote entrance fee)

Puerto Morelos has a Ruta de los Cenotes which is just a 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen, so consider heading here to start your epic cenote tour.

What you’ll discover in these underwater Mayan wonders will vary because there are hundreds of cenotes to choose from, but each one will be unique and beautiful!

Some of the cenotes are open air while others are located in a cave with a different amount of sun depending on the time of day. All of them vary in size, depth, and visibility.

The Ruta is about 10-20 kilometers inland from the beach in Puerto Morelos, but you can also get here from the Federal Highway from Cancun, Playa, or Tulum.

While lots of travelers rent a car and drive here, you can also grab a taxi and negotiate a price if that makes you more comfortable. Some of the cenotes that you’ll find along this route are:

  • Cenote Popol Vuh
  • Cenote Mojarras
  • Cenote Siete Bocas
  • Cenote Zapote
  • Cenote Kin Ha
  • Selvatica Park

When it comes to costs, all cenotes in the Riviera Maya will vary in price – typically between 30 to 300 pesos (sometimes more, but then you can expect amenities like multiple showers, a pool, concession stands, etc).

The 300 peso cenotes often have more amenities and are geared towards tourists. Make sure to take a shower before entering the cenote, and most places will have an area to hose yourself down before you take a dip in these underwater wonders.

And if you aren’t comfortable with your swimming skills, make sure you ask for a life jacket. But just to keep things safe, lots of places have made lifejackets mandatory.

Travel tip : The entrance area of most cenotes should have a sign saying no sunscreen, and the staff at the entrance will also remind you of that, as well. Make sure to follow this important no sunscreen rule (even the biodegradable kind is a no-no) because many of the ingredients in things like sunscreen and other lotions actually damage the waters and the flora in the cenote (which is why they ask you to rinse off before you dip in!).

I also recommend leaving early in the morning to beat the rush.

Most cenotes are open to the public from 8 am to 4 pm, and will close in the afternoon to new guests if the property is already full. In your day pack make sure to bring a towel, snacks, your reusable water bottle, and a change of clothes.

catamaran in the sea

Catamaran tours of Isla Mujeres.

4. Catamaran Tour of Isla Mujeres

Cost of Riviera Maya excursion: starting at $60 USD/1200 MX pesos

Take a little island getaway from Cancun ! A catamaran tour of nearby Isla Mujeres is a popular excursion in the Riviera Maya.

Day trips include a round-trip adventure sailing on a chartered catamaran from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, located only 8 miles from the ferry docks in Cancun.

The boat captains will take you to visit the island, and you can enjoy food and drinks on board, take in the views, and even swim in the reef. You can book the tour online, and there are plenty of tours to choose from every day.

Here’s what is typically included in a catamaran tour of Isla Mujeres:

  • An hour or two to swim and snorkel in the reef (gear included)
  • Buffet on board (some reviews say that the tours don’t have the best food, so don’t expect Michelin-star levels)
  • Drinks (beer, standard cocktails)
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) hosts on board
  • A few hours to explore Isla Mujeres
  • Ferry and dock fees to the island
  • First aid and other safety equipment on board (this may vary depending on the tour, so make sure to check beforehand)
  • Most boats carry about 30 people at a time
  • Departures for Isla Mujeres are mostly from Punta Sam in Cancun
  • Catamaran tours last anywhere between 4-8 hours

Most catamaran tours of Isla Mujeres will offer transportation to and from your hotel in Cancun, but just make sure to double-check before you book anything. Also, it might be a good idea to check if the dock fees or any other services come as an extra charge.

5. Tour of the Rio Secreto

Cost of excursion: starting at $79 USD

Just outside of Playa del Carmen is the Rio Secreto, an underground river surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. With a guide, you’ll go exploring these protected areas that can only be accessed with a tour.

The entrance fee for a basic tour starts at $79 USD, and lasts for approximately three hours. There are also full-day tours where you can access other areas of the Rio Secreto park .

Here’s an outline of the four Rio Secreto Riviera Maya excursions:

  • Rio Secreto : Basic tour with a group of 10 persons/max with a specialized tour guide. $79 includes equipment (lockers, helmet, wetsuit, life jacket, helmet with lamp, towel, snacks, and drinks (non-alcoholic).
  • Rio Secreto Plus : Everything that goes with the basic tour, plus the rappel experience, bike, and a visit to the Salon de la Paz.
  • Rio Secreto Wild Tour : Basic tour plus entrance to another cave area with secret cenotes, and snorkeling equipment included. Boxed lunch, drinks, and a buffet afterward.
  • Privilege : Luxury travelers looking for a boutique, tailored tour of this attraction. This is a full-day excursion to the Rio Secreto.

Individual and group tours of this excursion can be booked online, or you can call the park for more information.

Tulum ruins Mexico

Tulum Ruins.

6. The Tulum Ruins

Cost: starting at 120 for entrance fee and colectivo

Wondering where you can visit the Maya ruins in Mexico? It’s here in the Riviera Maya, and one of the best places to start are the remarkable seaside ruins in Tulum.

To see these beauts, you can organize your trip a few different ways. You can:

Book a tour : While this is the most expensive option, tours of the Tulum Ruins will typically include private tour transportation from and back to your hotel/hostel, the entrance fee, time to explore the area (and swim in the private seaside beach!), and any parking fees. You can also do a full-day tour to include trips to a few cenotes nearby. This is our favorite tour for visiting both Tulum and Coba in one day!

Self-guided tour using public transportation : This is the most affordable way to see the Tulum Ruins. At the time of writing, the entrance fee to the Tulum Ruins is around 80 MX pesos. Make sure to bring pesos to pay the entrance fee. Colectivos leave for the ruins from Playa del Carmen towards Tulum and cost about 40 pesos for transportation each way; the stop for the ruins is one just before downtown Tulum, so tell the driver that you’re headed there instead of the city. And, get the return times before you get dropped off! If you don’t want to take the colectivo there’s also the ADO bus option, but know that ADO buses only pick travelers up from the ruins to get back to the city later in the afternoon, so you might find yourself waiting around.

  • Self-guided tour using a car : If you have a rental car and a group of friends, it may be worth it to just drive there and pay for parking (about 120 pesos per vehicle). Look for the “Ruinas” sign along Highway 307. Getting there early is recommended any which way you visit the Tulum Ruins, as there’s almost no shade in the area and the morning is typically more ideal for swimming.

The Tulum Archeological Zone is open to the public from Monday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm.

chichen Itza pyramid

Chichen Itza is one of the best Riviera Maya excursions.

7. Chichen Itza

Cost: starting at $30 USD (entrance fee)

A trip to Chichen Itza is probably one of the most well-known excursions in the Riviera Maya. Over 2 million tourists visit every year and this attraction is getting increasingly popular with time.

The highlight of Chichen Itza is of course the Pyramid of Kukulkan, which in 2007 was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

A trip to Chichen Itza is probably one of the most well-known Riviera Maya excursions. Over 2 million tourists visit every year and this attraction is getting increasingly popular with time.

There are a few ways to visit Chichen Itza. You can:

  • Bus it from a major city like Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or the Yucatan cities of Merida and Valladolid. Chichen Itza is in Yucatan state and the closest city to the site is actually Valladolid. From there, you can take the bus to the site and pay the entrance fee to do your self-guided tour.
  • Book a tour : Another option is to book a tour with a guide who has more knowledge of the area. Tour prices range from $30-80 USD, which will typically include transportation from and back to your hotel. Only deluxe tours will have the ticket price for Chichen Itza included, so note that you’ll have to bring extra pesos to pay the entrance fee. Most will also include a sightseeing tour of Valladolid Old Town. This is our top pick for Chichen Itza tours .
  • Drive : Highways in Yucatan and Quintana Roo are well-paved and safe to drive on; the peninsula is super flat which makes for easy driving . Want to know more? Check out our guide to driving in Mexico here .

Doors open at 8 am and you should be on the bus by 7 or earlier if you’re leaving from Valladolid. The last tickets for the day are sold at 4.

8. Yal-Ku Lagoon

Cost of excursion: starting at 280 pesos (entrance fee)

Located in Akumal, Yal-Ku is a Riviera Maya excursion that’s a cenote and snorkeling all in one.

The lagoon is basically an open-air cenote, where guests can rent snorkeling equipment and explore the underwater world by swimming in the sparkling turquoise waters. All of these aspects make Yal-Ku one of the more unique cenotes to visit in the Riviera Maya!

In lieu of the sunscreen bring a long sleeve swimming shirt (and shorts or pants, if you want to be super careful) so that you don’t get sunburned while snorkeling.

sea turtle swimming underwater

Sea turtles in Akumal.

9. Beaches and Turtles in Akumal

Cost of excursion: beaches in Akumal are free to the public!

Located in between Playa and Tulum, Akumal is a chill beach town filled with natural wonders, some of which can be done ethically. This town has some of the best beaches in Mexico , so it’s definitely worth a visit.

One of the most popular things to do here is to enjoy the beautiful beach and perhaps spot some local wildlife, like stingrays or turtles.

You can see our blog post about swimming and watching sea turtles in Akumal here.  These beautiful creatures are under protection here and you can’t swim very close to them, and this website explains the protection laws for sea turtles in Akumal really well.

If you want to stay a few days in the land of the turtles, there are a few hostels in town if you’re on a budget, or, you can book a private bungalow with a beach view.

10. XPlor Near Cancun

Cost: starting at $117 USD

Looking for more ideas for Riviera Maya excursions? Just past the Rio Secreto along the highway near Cancun is XPlor, a top-rated adventure park managed by XCaret.

Guests can get 360 views of the jungle on one of the park’s two zip-line circuits that cover over two miles of land. Or, you can hop on a raft and paddle using your hands to explore the underground river area. There’s even an ATV excursion that takes guests through two different 3-mile circuits of flooded caverns, narrow backroads, and epic jungle views.

Want something super unique? XPlor has something called the Hammock Splash, where you sit in a hammock that will whiz you across a cenote before jumping in. This is a great choice for anyone who’s weary of jumping into a cenote from the height of a zip line.

You can get discounts on your entrance and tour tickets by booking them in advance via their website . The park has limited daily capacity, so book your tour here beforehand.

Sian Ka'an is the best of the riviera maya excursions

Sian Ka’an Biosphere.

11. Tour of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere

Cost: Tours vary in price from $50-200 per person for this Riviera Maya excursion

Located further down the Riviera Maya by Punta Allen, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere is nature at its finest. The biosphere is currently home to hundreds of bird species, mammals, 90 (!) species of native bees, and hundreds of species of fish, insects, and more.

While half of the area is closed to the public, there are ways to safely explore the Biosphere without making a big environmental impact. It is vital that you take a tour to visit this place. This is our personal favorite option which you can book here .

This company also offers wonderful tours. It is a grassroots organization that benefits the community. The tour agency was founded by Mayas from nearby towns.

It’s always an adventure here in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula! Save these amazing tours and excursions in the Riviera Maya for your next trip to this little piece of paradise.

The best things to do in Riviera Maya: ancient ruins, magical caverns and tree-top adventures

Extending across the northernmost tip of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is an 83-mile sweep of coastline running from the south of Cancún all the way to the Belize border.

The tourist corridor is a magnet for sun-seeking travelers with its powder-puff white sand beaches, legendary ruins, and the world’s second-largest coral reef. What makes the Riviera Maya all the more appealing is that it’s a year-round destination – although the best time to visit is between February and June when temperatures are mild and crowds thin out.

Beyond the sparkling strands, the Riviera Maya entices with an impressive lineup of well-preserved Maya ruins, world-class dive sites, and fun-filled cenotes (natural swimming holes) . Let’s just say you won’t ever run out of things to do. But if you don’t know where to start, we’ve handpicked the best things to do in Riviera Maya – including both quintessential must-dos and unusual experiences for those who like to stray off the well-trodden trail.

A woman stands on the cliffside admiring the Tulum ruins in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Time travel at the Tulum ruins

Ranked high as one of the most prominent ruins in Mexico , Tulum is a great place to start your Riviera Maya journey. The Tulum ruins are perched on the top of rocky cliffs, high above the azure waters of the Caribbean – an uncommon location for an ancient Maya city. With evidence of habitation dating back as far as 564 CE, Tulum's heyday as a Maya city was in the 1200s and it has withstood the ravages of time and retained its grid-like layout, main structures, and a strong sense of history in every corner.

The compact archaeological site can be seen in a couple of hours; aim to get here before the tour groups arrive at 11 am and bring a swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the inviting water beneath the ruins. There is very little shade at the ruins and the opportunity to cool off in the sea is most welcome. Start with the waterfront temples and meander clockwise through the site – the real prize is the view that awaits along the cliff-edge trail of the Castillo, the tallest structure in Tulum, backed by cobalt waters and a spiny-tailed iguana or two.

Get a digital experience at Mystika Tulum

After exploring the Tulum ruins, make a stop at the new-age interactive digital museum, Mystika Tulum . It delivers a one-of-a-kind sensory experience designed to take you on a journey through the Maya cosmology through multi-sensorial rooms and installations. The venue is modest, and the entrance fee is higher than local museums, but it captures your imagination like no other, with outstanding visuals that both adults and kids will appreciate. This gallery is the brainchild of Pepe Soho, one of the most celebrated photographers in Mexico.

Float in the ancient Maya canals at Sian Ka’an

One of the most biodiverse places in the world, Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an is a 1.3 million-acre reserve of mangroves, savannahs, spearmint lagoons, and virgin beaches. Just south of Tulum, this patch of wilderness is the largest protected area on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and an eco traveler’s dream come true. The majority of the Sian Ka’an is out-of-bounds, and only a fraction is designated for sustainable eco-tourism.

Sian Ka’an is best explored on a guided tour, as the rugged trails and waterways are challenging to traverse on your own. Maya-run Community Tours Sian Ka'an runs kayak tours through the lagoons and birdwatching tours that directly benefit the local community. While drifting down canals dug by the Mayas centuries earlier, try to spot giant land crabs and manatees, and listen out for howler monkeys.

A couple hold hands in a sunlit cavern in Yucatan

Swim in a cavern

Underneath the lush jungles of the Yucatán Peninsula lies a secret underworld of turquoise pools and mystical caves. Cenotes were revered by the Mayan civilization and used as a portal to communicate with the gods. Today, you can see why these underground caverns played a pivotal role in the Maya world.

In the crisp mineral-rich water of Cenote Dos Ojos , you’ll get the chance to weave through narrow passages and swim between illuminated stalactites and stalagmites. What you’re seeing is just a fragment of the world's largest underwater cave systems – book a guided snorkeling tour run by the local Maya community or a scuba dive session if you’d like to venture deeper into the cave system.

The trio of cenotes near Playa del Carmen tends to receive fewer visitors: Azul, Cristalino, and Eden are all open-air cenotes with clear-as-glass water and skin-nibbling tropical fish darting around. They’re great for people of all ages – adventurous adults can dive off mini cliffs into the water, kids can wade in the shallow pools or meander along the jungle paths, and seniors have plenty of space for a picnic.

Step back in time at Punta Allen

Located at the end of the Boca Paila Peninsula, the remote fishing village of Punta Allen gives a glimpse of how the Riviera Maya used to be. The picture-perfect beaches are empty except for a few stray dogs and a fisherman or two. A sandy main drag cuts through the sleepy pueblo , lined by crumbling wooden houses, simple loncherias (eateries), and grocery stores.

Getting here is not easy: even though it’s just 25 miles (40km) from the Sian Ka'an entrance, most people take at least two hours to traverse the bumpy dirt track to Punta Allen. But the village is well worth the arduous journey for its low-key atmosphere, traffic-free tranquility, and absence of mass tourism.

Rise early for a dolphin-watching trip or go snorkeling over the technicolored reef. After that, join the village's seniors on a fishing trip, and end the night under the starry skies in a bell tent at Hotel Cielo y Selva .

Swim in the magic waters of Laguna Bacalar

For those keen on veering off the beaten path, we’ll let you in on a secret: Laguna Bacalar is a quiet, little-known lake close to the border of Belize, with inviting spearmint water, stromatolite-rimmed shores, and overwater hammocks. Nicknamed Laguna de Siete Colores (lagoon of seven colors), the water alternates between light turquoise and dark indigo.

To explore the lagoon, base yourself in Bacalar town, just two hours from Tulum by car. The village appeals more to indie travelers than the average package tourist, with a surprisingly good selection of contemporary cafes and food trucks. Rent a kayak or join a boat tour to see the 38-mile-long (60km) stretch of water, making stops at the Canal de los Piratas , a channel that used to be plundered by pirates, and Cenote Cristalino , fringed by ancient pancake-like rocks known as stromatolites.

Watch the sunrise on a SUP

There’s no better time to take to the waters of the Riviera Maya than at sunrise. At this golden hour, the water is as smooth as glass, and the beach is empty save for a few other early birds. The usual raucous atmosphere of Playa del Carmen is gone, and in its place is a soothing silence punctuated by the sound of lapping waves and the squawks of seagulls overhead.

Paddleboarding at sunrise is an extraordinary experience, even for SUP (stand-up paddleboard) enthusiasts. Aloha Paddle Club organizes guided sunrise SUP sessions daily at Inti Beach, in the center of Playa del Carmen. Book in advance as these sessions are popular.

A sea turtle swimming over the coral reef in Akumal, Mexico

Snorkel with turtles in Akumal

Akumal is no longer a secret, but its swimmable lagoon remains the best place to snorkel with turtles in the Riviera Maya. The U-shaped bay and seagrass draw in turtles by the droves, with the coral reef protecting everything inside the bay. Because of the reef, the water here is always clear and calm – perfect conditions for snorkeling. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive eagle ray swimming in the seagrass meadow.

To swim in the protected marine reserve, joining a guided snorkeling tour is mandatory. Snorkeling gear and life safety vests are included. Those with young kids can also sign up for a snorkel excursion and marine biology class here with We Love the Sea .

Fly over the jungles

Active travelers rejoice: the Ruta de Cenotes, just 30 minutes south of Cancún, is a vast expanse of tropical forest that plays host to several eco-adventure parks. These joints, complete with zip line circuits, jungle trails, and cenotes, promise adults and children alike a thrilling good time – with all the safety measures in place.

Selvática is outfitted with 10 different zip lines, flying fox circuits, and even a bungee swing. You can also choose to hop on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) or a 4x4 buggy and trundle through the bush, though kids under 8 are not allowed on them for safety reasons. Cenotes Zapote is home to four different cenotes - including one with prehistoric sloth fossils. Each is equipped with its own zip line that whisk you through the wilderness.

Learn to surf at Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras is one of the best surfing beaches in the Riviera Maya, thanks to the perfect swells and water conditions. The beach is protected by seawalls, in a natural curve away from the open ocean.

Book yourself and your kids on fun, interactive lessons run by Nohoch Surf School . Their mini surf camps get raving reviews from little ones aged 4 to 12. If you’re already a surfer, the school has an excellent selection of boards that you can rent.

Explore Isla Cozumel on a Jeep

Across the bay from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel makes for an easy island escape with its low-key atmosphere and rugged, empty beaches. The best way to explore the 30-mile (48 km) long island is to hire a jeep or buggy as most of the island is covered by lush tropical forests, nature reserves, and empty beaches.

Head straight to the Punta Sur Ecological Park at the southern tip of the island – this natural reserve sprawls across 2500 acres of lagoon systems, tropical rainforests, and wild beaches. See the Maya ruin El Caracol, cruise the saltwater lagoon and spot crocodiles, then climb the 133 steps onto the top of the Celarain Lighthouse.

Get artsy in SFER IK

A contemporary art museum constructed mainly out of bejuco (an endemic wood that resembles vine), SFER IK (pronounced spheric) is a work of art in itself. Built using traditional techniques by Maya artisans, the structure was designed to blend in perfectly with the lush jungles of Tulum.

Wander barefoot through the curving corridor and bridges made of twisted vine-like wood and admire the permanent art collection created by renowned artists such as Ernesto Neto and Artur Lescher. Circular windows open out to the dense tropical forest surrounding you, with the sound of the waves in the not-so-far distance – this spot truly showcases how nature and art intertwine in the Riviera Maya.

Cleanse your soul at a temazcal

The Riviera Maya may have developed rapidly over the past decades due to tourism – but its rich Maya culture and traditions remain. An interesting Maya ritual that’s still practiced today is the temazcal , a pre-Colombian purification ceremony believed to cleanse your soul and rid you of illnesses.

A Maya leader leads the rite, guiding you into a dome-shaped sweat house fired up by steaming volcanic rocks, before beating you with corn husks. In the boiling heat, it’s hardly a relaxing experience, but keep your cool and you might just leave rejuvenated and balanced. Yaax Healing Sanctuary runs temazcal ceremonies at full moon led by a Maya healer.

Sign up for a Maya cooking class

Take a crash course in Maya ancestral cuisine and experience a side of the Riviera Maya that few are familiar with. When you book a cooking class with a local Maya family, you’ll get to know them, take a peek into their lives, and learn all about Maya ingredients, traditional dishes, and cooking methods.

Maya Immersion gives you a chance to do just that: from tasting the achiote spice to making massa (corn paste) from scratch and wrapping your own tamales. You’ll discover a cuisine distinctive from the Yucatecan or Mexican culinary world we know.

Recient Reviews of Cancun Activities

Wouldn’t refund me because we had to cancel because of a sick person.

Great experience. Professional! Would definitely recommend.

Asked the tour guide about putting on pants brought with for ATV rode and was told not necessary. Should wear socks and pants even though tour guide says shorts and water shoes are fine. When told tour guide the ATV was burning leg was not taken seriously. Ended up with what are considered stage 1 level 2 burns (blistered and will leave scarring) the heat shield was not working properly. Had to seek medical attention for burns. Foot rests were also broken on ATV. With the exception of the issues wih ATV and injury had fun ziplining and swimming in cenote. Happy Tours called due to another reason and when told the Happy Tours caller about the burn and havig to seek medical attention got ignored.

I use Happy tours for all of my transportation needs .Now that they book excursions, even better. Had no issues booking tours on their website. Very simple and straightforward.

Happy tours was great for booking. No issues. Any questions all you have to do is call and they will help you no problems. Definitely use their service again.

First, have correct snorkel vests. Life jacket is not good for snorkeling. Everything was just to rushed. Crew was great. And also platinum is not worth the xtra money. Other tours did exactly what we did. Just a few less people.

Overall great experience; they showed up right on time to pick us from and to the airport.

Everything went perfect as planned. Minod delay at pickup time but overall very enjoyable and much much better thane expected after reading TripAdvisor bad reviews of many other different Tour companies. I would highly recommend HappyTou rs to anybody who wants to do a tour in Cancún area.

Why take excursions in Cancun and the Riviera Maya?

Excursions are an amazing way to experience some of the culture and history Mexico has to offer. These activities are put together as an all-in-one package (if you’re purchasing through your resort) so you don’t have to worry about a thing, other than what time to be ready in the morning!

If you don’t have time to thoroughly research what there is to do in the area, these experiences provide you with an opportunity to explore the best of what Cancun and the Riviera Maya have to offer.

Looking to see an off the beaten path Mexican town during your Cancun trip? While the beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula are breathtaking, those looking to explore Mexico’s culture a little deeper need to head to dry land.

Known as one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico, Valladolid is fast becoming a popular day trip from Cancun. Located less than two hours from Cancun, this pueblo mágico has so many things to do, see and enjoy.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Just what is a pueblo mágico? This prestigious designation, which translates to “magic town,” is awarded by Mexico’s Tourism Secretary to certain pueblos (small towns) with historic significance, natural beauty and other noteworthy characteristics.

There are about 120 magical towns in Mexico, one of which is Valladolid. This city, known for its Yucatecan authenticity, gives visitors a chance to see the Mexico of centuries past.

Get your camera ready because there are so many gorgeous buildings and colorful streets to photograph. Don’t miss Calle de los Frailes and Calle 50, known as two of the prettiest streets in Valladolid.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Spend some time admiring this beautiful town from the zocalo (main square). Here, you’ll find a beautiful park, the Yucatan’s famous Tú y Yo (You and I, or Kissing Chairs), and the Catedral de San Servasio, a 16th century Spanish colonial church.

When it’s time to eat, head to La Casona, one of the best restaurants in Valladolid. Here, you can sample some authentic Yucatecan cuisine, like cochinita pibil (slow cooked pork), or papadzules (egg enchiladas) for vegetarians.

Cenote Caracol

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are located in one of the most beautiful spots in all of Mexico.  With everything from ancient Mayan ruins to Caribbean blue waters and lush green jungle, there is so much to see here!

One of the best things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula is exploring cenotes.

A cenote is a natural formation where a sinkhole is created in the earth after centuries of erosion and is filled with fresh water.  It is said that there are over 6000 cenotes in the area.  Some cenotes are completely open-air; others are completely underground, and still others are somewhere in between.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Cenote Caracol is incredibly unique.  The cenote is accessed by climbing down a steep staircase through a small opening in the earth.  The swimming hole is completely underground and is pitch dark except for the blue and yellow lights that have been installed.  A giant cavern opens up and allows for swimming in cool cave water with tons of small fish.

Cenote Caracol sits inconspicuously under dry earth and trees in Tulum, Quintana Roo.  It can be reached in less than one hour from the Riviera Maya and is well worth the trip for any solo traveler, family or friend group.

Whale Sharks

If you are planning to visit the Riviera Maya between June and September, there is the chance to go on a once in a lifetime adventure tour: swimming with whale sharks in the Caribbean Sea!

During this season, the so-called gentle giants are swimming relatively close to the coast as they can find a lot of seaweed over there.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

This trip is perfect for couples or a group of friends who want to have a breathtaking and unforgettable experience during their stay in Mexico.

Choosing the organization Eco Tours, you will be picked up at your hotel in the early morning. After a short breakfast, the boat is taking a group of 5-10 people out on the open sea. Once some whale sharks are spotted, the snorkeling adventure begins. Everyone will have enough time to swim side by side with the majestic animals.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

On the way back, you will have time to relax on the beach Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres and enjoy some cool drinks in the turquoise water. Before and during the trip, the organization makes sure that everyone is provided with all the necessary security instructions and that the adventure takes place in a respective and nature-friendly way.

Aktun Chen is a nature park on the Riviera Maya located 20 km north of Tulum. This awesome conservation area offers 3 different activities to experience the ecosystem. The excursions include ziplining in the jungle canopy, swimming in an underground river, and walking through the longest dry cave in Quintano Roo. There are also zoo areas with native wildlife. Kids of all ages will love watching the spider monkeys play in the trees.

The cave tour has been named by National Geographic as one of the 10 best underground walks in the world. The guided stroll through the Mayan underground world ends at a colorful cenote draped with impressive cave stalactites.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

For a more adventurous group, the jungle zipline tour fits the bill for excitement. The zipline tour soars over trees and a natural gorge with glimpses of wildlife along the way.

The underground river swimming tour is great for families. You will see beautiful fish and sunken cave formations while snorkeling through the crystal clear water.

The guides for all the activities are immensely proud of the natural beauty of Aktun Chen. Therefore, they are excited to share their knowledge of the flora, fauna, and Mayan culture. With all there is to do, Aktun Chen is a must-visit destination for all nature lovers.

Pink Lakes of Las Coloradas

When exploring Yucatan and the Riviera Maya in Mexico, you’re probably dreaming of white sand beaches and blue ocean water. Let’s mix things up and switch that blue water for pink! Because in the northern part of Yucatan is quite a unique destination to visit: the pink lakes at Las Coloradas .

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Las Coloradas is all the way up north Yucatan, a 130-kilometer drive from the charming city of Valladolid. Las Coloradas is actually the name of a small village, the lakes are located in the nature reserve Rio Lagartos.

The main attraction around are the pink lakes. This special natural phenomenon is the result of algae and plankton in the water, the same flamingos eat and get their pink color from! Don’t be surprised to see many of those pink birds here as well.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

You can drive along the lakes and enjoy the view, stopping at some points to see the lakes from up close. The best views are close to the salt factory, but there are also some locals here charging you a fee to walk along the lakes. There are some guides as well, hoping to explain to you all about the pink colors and flamingos.

Punta Laguna

Just under two hours from Cancun, in the middle of the jungle lies Punta Laguna. The natural area offers one of the most unique attractions: you can see spider monkeys !

To visit, it is best to rent a car for the drive southwest from Cancun. Upon arrival, take a walk through the jungle to see a plethora of wildlife. Your best chances of spotting the elusive spider monkeys will be with the help of a local Mayan guide that can be hired right by the entrance.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

The walk through the jungle is appropriate for all ages! Bring closed toe shoes and a charged camera, to easily spot the moving monkeys. Adults and older children may also enjoy canoeing across the lake and doing a zip line for an additional fee!

Take a break from the sun and sand and explore this gorgeous jungle for a few hours on your beach vacation.

Xplor Adventure Park

From zip lining high above the jungle trees to exploring underground rivers in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, Xplor Park is the perfect excursion for adventure seekers.

Located just outside of Playa del Carmen, Xplor Park offers both a daytime experience (great for families with kids 5+) and a nighttime “ Fuego ” experience (great for couples and friends).  It’s easy to spend an entire day here with unlimited adventure activities.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Fly through the air and speed down 14 different zip lines with two water landings (one landing at the top of a waterslide tower and the other into a refreshing cenote).  If you don’t want to complete a full zipline circuit, try out Hammock Splash.  This single zip line will have you flying through the air, while sitting in a hammock, with a refreshing Cenote landing at the end.

To stay cool, spend some time underground with a cave river paddle, paddling with your hands onboard a single or double raft, among stalactites and stalagmites. The river caves can also be experienced with a swim instead, leading to a fantastic waterfall at the end.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

When it’s time to dry off, hop into one of their all-terrain amphibious vehicles and drive through the trails, splashing through caverns, conquering steep slopes and twisting and turning through the incredible jungle paths.

Xplor Park offers a unique and exciting experience and with the price of admission including all park activities, a buffet meal and unlimited snacks, it’s a must do excursion in Mexico.

Chichen Itza

The Ancient city of Chichen Itza is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Mexico and in the world. This city existed over 1000 years ago and was built by the Mayans.

In its center is the big pyramid, also known as the Temple of Kukulcán, or The Castle, which is an architecture phenomenon. No Wonder that Chichen Itza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the second-most visited site in Mexico, and the Pyramid is one of the New Seven Wonders of The World.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Arriving at Chichen Itza from Cancun or Playa Del Carmen takes about 2-2.5 hours’ drive, and it is easy to find tours that will take you there and back.

The way inside the archeological site is highly organized but might include standing in lines. Once in, you are added to a group and a local guide shows you around. You will learn about the Mayan culture and the buildings around the city, from the main temple to their ball-playing court.

Around the old buildings there are vendors selling souvenirs, from t-shirts with local symbols to miniature statues of Mayan figures and Mayan calendars. These can make a great gift to take back home, and you can always bargain when you buy more than one.

A visit to Chichen Itza is a must do when you visit the Riviera Maya – it is educational, interesting, impressive and it really brings the ancient Mayan culture back to life.

Snorkelling with Turtles at Akumal Beach

Snorkelling with turtles is a bucket list item for lots of people and it’s easy to see why. Turtles are graceful and curious creatures and love to swim around with humans who are snorkelling or scuba diving. The turtles in Akumal are no exception and if you are lucky you will see the local turtles feeding in the seagrass off Akumal beach.

Akumal means place of the turtle in Mayan and the small town of Akumal is a coastal resort on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, on the Yucatán Peninsula. If you are staying in Riviera Maya many companies will try and sell you an expensive day tour to snorkel with the turtles but this is not required.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Simply flag down a local bus or ‘collectivo’ and tell the driver you want to go to Akumal and let them do the rest. The collective is super cheap and will drop you off on the main road into Akumal town, from here follow the road down towards the beach.

If you need to hire snorkelling equipment there are a couple of local companies right on the beach front but if you have your own continue to the beach. Ignore the signs saying you must hire equipment as this is simply not true, the only rule is you must wear short fins to avoid damaging the reef and of course no touching the turtles. When you get in the water adhere to the safety signs indicating the boat lane

Sitting on the edge of a cliff overlooking the stunning Caribbean sea is Tulum , an impressive well preserved and famous archaeological site spanning over 800 years of history, complete with its own gorgeous beach.

Visiting Tulum is a perfect day trip for those wanting to explore some ancient ruins and get a glimpse of what life was like in this Mayan city. From Cancun, it’s about a 2 hour one-way trip, or if you’re in the Playa Del Carmen area, it’s about an hour. Usually an excursion that involves visiting Tulum is paired with an eco-park visit like Xel-Há or Xcaret.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Tulum was one of the few Mayan cities protected by a wall, and is the only city built on the coast. It was a seaport, trading mostly in turquoise and jade.

The most prominent landmark here is the Castillo, perched on the edge of the limestone cliffs overlooking the azul Caribbean waters. It’s a photographer’s dream.

Visiting Tulum is suitable for people of all ages. It’s a fun place for kids to explore, and for adults to learn the history about this historic site.

Tip: There is no shade here! Be sure to bring a hat , wear your sunscreen , and stay hydrated. If time allows, bring a bathing suit and head down to the white-sand beach!

Cenote Zapote Ecopark

Cenote Zapote Ecopark is a fun family excursion in the Riviera Maya located just 30 minutes from Puerto Morelos, Mexico.  Situated along the famous “Ruta de Cenotes”, Cenote Zapote is a less well-known attraction where you can zipline and experience three unique cenotes.  It can be a full day experience and is perfect for those looking for a more adventurous excursion.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Once you arrive to Cenote Zapote, you can choose to walk to the different attractions, rent bicycles, or even hire an ATV.  From there you’ll set out to experience the three different cenotes at leisure:

– A large open cenote with a makeshift overwater rope zipline

– A deep open cenote with a high jumping platform and underwater cave system below

– An underground cavern-like cenote with stalagmites and stalactites

Aside from the cenotes, Cenote Zapote Ecopark also offers an adrenaline pumping zipline course.  It comprises five different ziplines where you can cascade above the Mayan jungle.  You’ll be outfitted with harnesses and helmets, and the expert guides will lead you along the course.

If you’re looking for adventurous activities in the Riviera Maya, Cenote Zapote is perfect for families or groups of friends. The ziplines are safe and secure, and each cenote can be experienced at your own comfort level so it’s suitable for younger children, teens, or adults. Diving in Cozumel

Located just off the Yucatan Peninsula, the gorgeous undeveloped island of Cozumel is famed for its teeming marine life and the many diving and snorkeling spots. One of the diving spots to consider is the Palancar Reef.

The crystal clear waters of Palancar Reef are so inviting; it would be hard to pass up the opportunity to get in. The dive depths vary, so this diving area caters to divers of all skill levels.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

There are also amazing shallow reefs about less than 30 ft, which should give beginners the chance to see wildlife up close. While diving in Palancar Reef, some beautiful creatures to spot are colorful tropical fish, eagle rays, and sea turtles.

Older children and teens can participate in diving activities as well, provided they are confident swimmers and have diving training or experience. Younger ones can go snorkeling in the shallow waters or go for a fun beach time instead.

Whether you’re traveling as a group, solo, or couple, Cozumel will be an ideal island destination to pick for a relaxing getaway and mastering your diving skills. Also, it’s a generally safe area for families. You can take a mindful walk around town, try out different restaurants, and mingle with the locals.

Punta Sur Eco Park

Located just a 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, Cozumel Island makes a fun destination for a day trip . Cozumel is known for its fantastic diving and snorkeling, its undeveloped beaches, and stunning scenery. In my opinion, one of Cozumel’s biggest highlights is Punta Sur Eco Park.

This nature preserve covers over 1,000 hectares of Cozumel’s southern tip and encompasses beaches, mangroves, and more. You can spot birds and crocodiles from viewing platforms overlooking the lagoon, ascend a lighthouse to admire the stunning views of Cozumel’s southern coast, or visit El Cielo beach to rent snorkel gear and swim offshore to spot tropical fish and rays. After your swim, relax with a cold beer while you enjoy the scenery from the shade of a beach lounger!

excursions in riviera maya cancun

There is also a boat tour, which will take you on a cruise through the mangroves to see birds, like flamingos, and other species that are native to this area.

With so much to see and do, Punta Sur makes a fun outing for any traveler who is interested in the natural flora and fauna of this region. The park is open Monday through Saturday and the cost of admission is $26 USD per person.

Because of its size, you will need a vehicle to make the most of your visit to Punta Sur. Fortunately, you’ll have no problem finding car rentals right at the ferry terminal when you arrive at Cozumel.

Muyil Ruins and Ka’an Luum Lagoon

If you love exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, you need to visit the ruins at the Muyil Archeological Site and the natural lagoon Ka’an Luum. Located about a 20 minute drive from Tulum, the best way to reach both is by car.

If you’re looking to get a great picture of Mayan ruins without crowds of people in the background, your best bet is to visit one of the lesser known sites, such as Muyil.  If you come during week or in the morning, you’re almost guaranteed to have the entire place to yourself!

It’s also a great option if you are on a budget as the entrance fee is only 80 pesos or about $4 USD.

Note : Be sure to bring bug spray as the mosquitos can be relentless!

excursions in riviera maya cancun

After working up a sweat walking around Muyil, cool off with a refreshing swim at the Ka’an Luum lagoon on your way back to Tulum.  This secluded lagoon is a true hidden gem!  Look for a hand-painted wooden sign along the highway between Muyil and Tulum advertising Laguna Ka’an Luum.

Here, you’ll turn onto a small dirt road for about a kilometer until you reach the entrance to the lagoon. The small entry fee of 100 pesos (around $5 USD) gets you access to the lagoon for the day.  There are basic bathroom facilities and a small stand selling snacks and ice cold coconuts.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

The center of the lagoon is actually a cenote ! It goes down about 80 meters and standing from the top deck of the platform on the dock, you can see the change in the color of the water as it turns a dark blue toward the center where the cenote is located.

The rest of the lagoon is a light greenish-turquoise color and about waist deep. There are swings and hammocks set up in the water which are great for a photo-op and to just relax in.  It’s the perfect spot to float and relax in nature.

Note : If you sunburn easily, make sure to wear a rash guard or swimsuit with sleeves.  Because the lagoon is also a natural cenote, sunscreen is not permitted as it can damage the  delicate ecosystem.

p.s. looking to pick up some reef-safe sunscreen for your travels? Many locations require this in order to swim so it’s good to be prepared!

Book a guided tour of the Muyil Ruins !

The Mayan Riviera is famous for its proximity to Mexico’s most famous ruins. Coba is an easy day trip from Cancun and Playa Carmen that’s perfect for couples and family alike. Located two hours from Cancun, Coba is a ruin of an ancient Mayan community. Unlike the Tulum ruins, Coba is mostly sheltered by trees so there is lots of shade, making it easier to explore longer.

This area is very well reserved and features several ruin sites. Every site within Coba is connected by what is known as White Roads (Sacbéob) A total of 16 of these roads are accessible to visitors but there are as many as 50 in total.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

The main attraction in Coba is known as the Big Pyramid, an ancient Mayan ruin that you can climb to the top of. It is the highest Mayan ruin in the Yucatan. The views at the top are stunning and make for a perfect photo opportunity. Other sites you may visit include the Mesoamerican ball courts, an ancient Mayan sport that would often end up in human sacrifice.

Whether you are visiting with a tour or self-guided, take advantage of the bicycles and tricycles available to rent. Coba is quite spread out and walking in the heat is no fun!

Xel-Há Park

Xel-Há (pronounced “shell-ha”) is located south of Playa del Carmen near Akumal and is a super easy day trip from anywhere in the Riviera Maya.  Transportation from your resort is available with most ticket options, so getting here couldn’t be easier.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Xel-Há is an all-inclusive eco-park that offers all-day fun for anyone.  With your all-inclusive admission, you can snorkel with fish, tube down a lazy river, bike through the jungle, explore caves, slide down a waterslide, jump off a cliff, play on a zipline over the water, and so much more.  There really is something for everyone – including a blissfully relaxing hammock park if you want a mid-afternoon siesta.  If you’re willing to upgrade, Xel-Há offers additional experiences like swimming with manatees, dolphins, or stingrays.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

In between all of these activities, Xel-Há also offers multiple onsite restaurants and bars where you can indulge in food & drink – including alcoholic drinks – and this is all included in your admission price.

Xel-há is perfect for everyone – families, groups of friends, honeymooners, and everyone in-between will have a fun-filled day of adventure at Xel-Há.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a gorgeous island just off the coast of Cancun. With sun drenched beaches and small local cafes lining the beach, it is the best place to tan and get away from the crowds of Cancun for the weekend.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

The best part of going to Isla Mujeres are the catamaran tours that take you to the island. The catamarans are a party in themselves with tons of people drinking, dancing and just having fun sailing in the open seas.

Once you get to the island you have the options to laze around the Caribbean beaches or get a little more adventurous. Swimming with whale sharks, visiting a turtle farm, snorkeling pristine waters and getting massages on the beach are just a few of the activities available on this paradisiacal island.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

And when the tourists have left for the day in the evening, the island turns into a magical little cocoon far away from any noise that you can savor leisurely with a midnight walk under a canopy of stars.

Holbox is a tiny island north of Cancún in Quintana Roo Mexico. Holbox is usually considered a more quiet and untouched version of the popular tourist locations in this area like Cozumel, Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres. There are a number of awesome things to do in Holbox to beat the crowds!

excursions in riviera maya cancun

On Holbox there is next to no motorised traffic and most people get around by golf cart. The roads are unpaved and only around 2,000 people live on the island permanently. Holbox is home to the famous bioluminescent plankton that makes the water at the shallow beaches glow at night.

It’s the perfect island to go for a snorkelling excursion and admire the incredible beauty of the underwater world. If you’re brave enough you can even swim with whale sharks in their natural habitat here.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Holbox is a quiet place and there is not much nightlife. It’s the perfect island to relax and enjoy nature but if you’re looking for beach parties that go on all night this is not the spot. It’s perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway or families. Don’t miss out on Holbox when you visit Mexico.

MUSA – Cancun Underwater Museum

Whilst there are an abundance of activities on land, near Cancun you will find a very unique underwater experience. Here, in the shallow waters towards Isla Mujeres, is an Underwater Museum! Known locally as MUSA, this is the work of artist Jason deCaires Taylor. You will find concrete underwater sculptures of people, cars, houses and many other things.

If you are certified, then the best way to explore is to scuba dive MUSA and get up close. However, if not, you can always do your first dive experience here! The statues are all in shallow water, making it perfect for beginners!

excursions in riviera maya cancun

For people who prefer to stay above the water, or families with younger children, then a snorkeling trip may be more suited. The water here is crystal clear Caribbean sea, so even from the surface you can see the statues!

If you really don’t fancy getting your feet wet, or perhaps are less mobile, there is a glass bottomed boat which you can take a ride on. This boat sails above the museum, and has a completely see through floor, meaning you can see below without getting into the water at all! Whichever one you choose to visit, this really is a must do activity in Mexico!

Xcaret Park

You can’t visit the Riviera Maya without going to one of the best eco-parks in the country, Xcaret Park. It is the perfect place for families, couples, and even older travelers. There is something here for everyone to enjoy

Xcaret is located an hour from Cancun and 20 minutes from Playa Del Carmen. There is an option to purchase transportation when you buy your ticket, so you don’t have to get a taxi to the park. The big pink bus will pick you up from your hotel and drop you off at the park.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Xcaret Park is one of a kind with underwater caves, a Mayan Village, ancient ruins, traditional Mayan shows, a butterfly pavilion, an aviary, a children’s world, and so much more. There are additional excursions to purchase inside of the park such as Snuba, Sea Trek, shark encounters, a snorkeling tour, and a relaxing massage. Here the possibilities are endless .

excursions in riviera maya cancun

What makes this one of the most unique parks in the world is its emphasis on the Mayan culture. Everywhere you look there are touches of the lost empire. Many of the shows offer you a glimpse into the past when the ancient Mayan civilization ruled the Yucatan Peninsula. After spending a day here you’ll want to return for more.

Best Excursions from Cancun & Top Mayan Riviera Excursions

Cancun is a top destination for a Mexican beach vacation. But, it’s also a great base for exploring the beautiful Mayan Riviera and Yucatan Peninsula. If you’re thinking of getting off the resort to see more of this stunning region then this post on excursions from Cancun is a must-read!

The possibilities are almost endless when it comes to tours, day trips, and excursions from Cancun . Choose from secluded beaches, mystical cenotes, Mayan ruins, adventure theme parks, sailing trips, diving and snorkeling tours, plus delicious food-focused and cultural experiences.

We’ve spent many months in the Mayan Riviera over the years and have enjoyed a huge variety of Cancun excursions and day trips. Although we’ve still barely scratched the surface of the amazing number of Mayan Riviera excursions available, we’ve definitely experienced enough to make some suggestions.

Mayan Riviera Excursions from Cancun

Water activity excursions from cancun.

It’s no surprise that many of the most popular Mayan Riviera excursions from Cancun involve water. Whether it’s sailing the seas or snorkeling and diving in the clear Caribbean or freshwater cenotes there are plenty of choices.

Snorkeling Excursions

Undersea shot of tropical brightly colored fish and coral

The Caribbean is teeming with sea life and snorkeling is right behind diving for the best way to see the beautiful underwater world just off the shores of Cancun or Cozumel. Experiences can include reef and shipwreck snorkeling, snorkeling with turtles or whale sharks and even snorkeling at the Cancun underwater museum .

Sailing Excursions

Sailboat on horizon of Caribbean

There’s nothing quite like sitting on the deck of a boat, sun on your face, wind in your hair and drink in your hand, gazing across the impossibly turquoise Caribbean. Boating excursions from Cancun range from small, peaceful sails to romantic sunset dinners to high energy party cruises.

Many of the full day sailing excursions include a meal, drinks, snorkeling and a visit to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel. Everyone should experience a day on the water when visiting Cancun and the Mayan Riviera.

Cenote Excursions

Inside a cave Cenotes

No trip to the Yucatan is complete without swimming in at least one cenote. But trust us when we say one will never be enough. Mayan Riviera cenotes are addictive because each one is so very uniquely beautiful. There are thousands of these mystical water filled sinkholes making for an almost unlimited choice of cenote excursions from Cancun and the Mayan Riviera.

Excursions from Cancun to Mayan Ruins

If you enjoy learning about the history and culture of a destination when you travel then visiting one or more of the Mayan Ruins near Cancun is a must. Before European explorers arrived in the Yucatan the Mayan civilization was flourishing.

Although much of the Maya population were farmers there were at least 40 impressive Mayan cities throughout the Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. These Maya cities were centers for commerce, administration, manufacturing, events, and ceremonies (particularly religious ones).

Among the inhabitants were kings, priests, and leaders in science, mathematics, astronomy and medicine. This is why there were so many incredible stone temples, pyramids and palaces built.

There are several well-preserved and excavated Mayan ruins sites easily visited on excursions from Cancun.

Learn more about this amazing country with these 80+ Fun Facts About Mexico

Chichen Itza

Kulkukan Temple Chichen Itza ruins in the Yucatan Mexico

The massive site of Chichen Itza is probably the best known and definitely one of the most visited of the Mayan ruin sites in Mexico. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Pyramid Kukulcan is one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World”

Tulum ruins

The walled city of Tulum was one of the most important Mayan cities in the Yucatan. The location, sitting on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean, made it a busy seaport and also a defensive stronghold. But what most visitors will be awed by is the incredible view.

Coba Maya ruins Mexico

Like Chichen Itza, Coba is another huge and impressive site. But only 20% of the structures have been uncovered so there’s still a lot of lush jungle giving it an extra exotic feel. There are bicycles available to tour the large site.

The Maya city of Ek Balam is less known and therefore less crowded than some of the other Mayan sites which may be a big plus to some. It’s nestled in the Yucatan jungle and although it’s not as impressive as Chichen Itza the fact that you can climb the temples and pyramids for epic jungle views is a big draw.

Adventure Excursions from Cancun

The Yucatan and Mayan Riviera are made for adventure and there are dozens of great excursions from Cancun for the adventurous traveler. Choose from theme parks, ziplining, ATV tours, water parks, and more.

Experiencias Xcaret Adventure Parks

Lagoon at Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya Mexico

The first park in the Experiencias group was Xcaret and it’s still one of the most popular. Xcaret provides a well-rounded experience in all the things the Yucatan is known and loved for. Here you’ll find activities and displays of nature, culture, adventure and history including a spectacular live show in the evening.

Other parks include Xel-Ha for snorkeling and water activities. Xplor for ziplines, caves, amphibious vehicles and jungle hikes. Xenotes for ziplines, rappelling, kayaking and cenotes. Xenses for adventures of the senses by land, sea and air. And Xavage for extreme adventure of all kinds.

ATV & Jungle Tours & Ziplining

The Yucatan is covered in lush tropical jungle and a jungle tour makes for a very unique Mayan Riviera excursion. Most of the jungle tour excursions from Cancun are done by 2-person speedboat and take you through a labyrinth of mangroves and through the Nichupte Lagoon. You’ll see plenty of wildlife and tropical plant life and will end with a snorkel on the Punta Nizuc Reef.

ATV tours are another way to get up close and personal with the unique nature of the Yucatan and Mayan Riviera. These tours will have you cruising through the jungle to various cenotes, ziplines and other adventurous activities.

Ziplining is a top adventure activity in the Mayan Riviera. You’ll find ziplines at every adventure park and many of the cenotes and water parks along the Mayan Riviera.

Food, Drink & Cultural Excursions from Cancun

Traveler's Table

Some of the best reasons to visit Mexico are for the great food, drink and colorful culture. This is especially true of the Yucatan where the mix of Mayan culture and Spanish influence have blended into some unique dishes and an interesting history and culture.

We highly recommend taking a little time out from the beaches of Cancun to get to know the local food, drink and culture . While you can certainly find tacos and tequila everywhere in the Mayan Riviera the best way to enjoy an immersive and fun learning experience is to put yourself in the hands of the experts. You may even like to try a cooking class which is a ton of fun!

Costa Maya – Quintana Roo’s Best-Kept Secret

Welcome to Costa Maya, Mexico — a hidden paradise blending ancient Maya heritage with stunning natural beauty. From pristine beaches to vibrant coral reefs, this destination offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Explore archaeological wonders, indulge in water activities, or enjoy shopping and dining in the bustling port area. Whether you’re seeking cultural immersion or outdoor thrills, Costa Maya offers an unforgettable experience.

Where in the World is Costa Maya?

Just 80 miles south of Cozumel lies Costa Maya , whose popularity lies in its stunning beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lush jungles. Situated in Quintana Roo on the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula , it shares a border with Belize and the Caribbean Sea .

Rich in history, Costa Maya was once home to the ancient Maya civilization , as evident in nearby jungle ruins. Today, it serves as the nearest gateway to numerous lesser-known Mayan archaeological sites, such as Chacchoben and Kohunlich. This close proximity offers passengers convenient access to explore ancient Mayan history and culture.

Many cruisers see Costa Maya as a little known stop on their cruise itinerary, but this small gem of a place has an interesting backstory. A quick insight into its beginnings enhances the uniqueness of your trip to this quaint tourist destination .

The Creation of the Riviera Maya

excursions in riviera maya cancun

It was just half a century ago that the Yucatan Peninsula was commonly referred to as “Mexico’s Empty Quarter.” This area was one of Mexico’s most underdeveloped and sparsely populated, drawing a small number of adventurous backpackers here and there to its shores.

In the 1970s the government decided to create an east coast resort destination to mirror the Pacific coast’s Mexican Riviera ; they also hoped to beckon tourists who were frequenting the nearby Caribbean islands. The tourist development frenzy started with Cancun, and slowly spread south along the Cancun-Tulum Corridor (now known as the Riviera Maya ), appealing to both tourists and entrepreneurs looking for a quieter substitute to the bustling Cancun.

By the 1990s, tourism caught up with the Costa Maya area, the last undeveloped section of the coast. The cruise ship pier was built in 2001, next to the sleepy little fishing village-turned-growing tourist center of Mahahual.

Tourism began to flourish in this area prior to Hurricane Dean’s arrival in 2007, but the devastation caused by the hurricane understandably dampened visitor numbers for several years. Subsequent global challenges such as the Swine flu and Covid also hindered the growth of Costa Maya.

While mass tourism development has exploded on the Yucatan coast in recent years, Costa Maya has managed to remain outside the fray, thanks to more focused sustainability through planning for eco-tourism and low-density housing.

All of this has resulted in a more subdued, less saturated experience for visitors to Costa Maya. A comparative newcomer to the cruise scene, this small tourist region is a good alternative to its crowded, commercialized neighbors. Its laid-back, bohemian vibe has become synonymous with a true, authentic Caribbean hideaway, with an understated sort of anti-Cancun atmosphere.

If the sizzling nightlife is your thing, take a pass; but if you’re a sun seeker looking to get away from it all, or wish to experience the true Riviera Maya, you’re in the right place.

What to Do in Costa Maya

Step into history.

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Because these remote jungle ruins are relatively untouched, the Chacchoben ruins are among the closest you can get to experiencing what it was like here during Mayan times. Some of the structures date back as far as 300 – 360 AD, with evidence of several modifications over the years.

As you wander around the site , you’re instantly transported back in time to a civilization that thrived amidst the dense jungles of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Towering pyramids, crumbling temples, and weathered stone structures hint at the foundations of a powerful ceremonial center. Archaeological excavations and your guide will support this, offering valuable insights into the daily lives and customs of this fascinating civilization.

Walk along the worn pathways, exploring the intricate carvings and hieroglyphs adorning the walls, and discover a deep sense of appreciation for the rich cultural heritage preserved within these ancient ruins. You will notice the ongoing excavation of several mounds, uncovering additional structures and treasures.

Fun fact: Archaeological finds suggest that Chacchoben had extensive trade networks with other Mayan cities and possibly even with civilizations outside of the Mayan world. This is evidenced by the discovery of artifacts such as ceramics, obsidian, and jade from distant regions found at the site.

Step Into Nature

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Visiting the Seven Color Lagoon in Costa Maya is a magical experience that immerses you into a world of vibrant hues and natural wonders. Also known as Lake Bacalar , this large, narrow freshwater lake is a regional rarity, as the Yucatan Peninsula is mostly made up of porous limestone with lots of cenotes.

As you arrive, you’re greeted by the breathtaking sight of turquoise, emerald, sapphire, and other dazzling shades shimmering under the tropical sun. Peer down through the clear waters and discover rare stromatolites, or cauliflower-like sediment formations that, in fossilized form, contain some of the oldest bacteria on the planet.

Set out on the lagoon aboard a canoe or kayak , absorbing the area’s beauty and tranquility as you paddle along, surrounded by lush mangroves and exotic wildlife. Watch for schools of colorful fish darting through the waters, and observe delicate water lilies adorning the shores. While in the area, take a short jungle walk on one of the many lakeside trails, and keep your eyes open for colorful toucans that land upon the tree branches.

Fun fact: The striking colors of the lagoon are attributed to the presence of different types of algae and minerals, creating a natural masterpiece that enchants visitors from around the world.

Step Into Relaxation

excursions in riviera maya cancun

Sink into the soft, warm sands of Costa Maya’s picturesque beaches, and relax as the world fades away . The gentle sea breezes and soothing waves make it an idyllic setting for an unforgettable day of tranquility and adventure. Lounge beneath the radiant sun, a sense of serenity enveloping you as you soak up the tropical rays, feeling every ounce of stress dissolving.

As you recline in your beach chair, the tantalizing aromas of freshly prepared Mexican snacks fill the air, tempting your taste buds. From zesty ceviche to savory tacos, the flavors of Mexico delight your senses, providing the perfect accompaniment to your beachside retreat. And with unlimited access to refreshing drinks, indulgence knows no bounds as you savor each mouthful and sip in the company of friends or loved ones.

Adventure-seekers have a lot of exciting ways to explore the waters. Whether you choose to glide across the surface on a paddleboard, try your hand at fishing, or check out the vibrant marine life through snorkeling, there’s a perfect water sport for every enthusiast. Delve into Costa Maya’s underwater world and be greeted by colorful coral reefs and playful tropical fish, adding a touch of magic to your coastal escapade.

Fun Fact: Costa Maya’s relaxing beaches also serve as nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. While at the beach you might have the unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures as they come ashore to lay their eggs before returning to the vast expanse of the ocean.

A Word About Safety

Some visitors to Costa Maya wonder if it’s a safe place to disembark. Due to its smaller size and location, Costa Maya typically offers a safer option to the more bustling cities in Quintana Roo.

That being said, like any destination, it’s smart to stay vigilant of your surroundings and take necessary precautions, especially when venturing out at night.

Escape to Paradise

excursions in riviera maya cancun

If you’re looking to unplug and reconnect with nature, or are the type to eschew run-of-the-mill tours in favor of more authentic experiences, then Costa Maya is a must-do.

Come discover the best kept secret in Quintana Roo! Explore the wonders of the Chacchoben Mayan ruins with our archaeological excursions, embark on serene paddling at the Seven Color Lagoon, or simply bask in a tranquil beach day. Whatever your preference, we can make it happen . Call us today.

Great activities!

We had Renaldo as our transport driver and he was absolutely amazing!! The excursion itself was run by extreme adventures and we had the most wonderful time - it was the right amount of time for each activity and was a very thrilling experience. First we had ATV, then tequila tasting. Sante was our tequila tasting guide and he was very knowledgeable about the tequila! He sold the tequila well, and whilst slightly expensive it’s the best/real tequila and it tasted real good. We then had a snack handmade by someone for the Mayan village herself. Following this, we had zip lining and cenotes and tacos. Our photographer Alex took some really beautiful pictures which we absolutely felt compelled to buy. Unfortunately, for only air-dropped photos, these cost us 75 USD. Pablo was our main tour guide for all activities and he really made the experience, making everyone feel safe and engaged. I would definitely recommend this organisation for activities in Cancun! Thank you!

An unforgettable experience! I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a complete tour at the park and a speedboat ride on the caribbean sea. Shout out to the amazing crew that made my day the most fun I've ever had. I am afraid of ziplines however the guides were supportive at all times and ending the day relaxing at the cenote were magical, while the speed and excitement of the speedboat and atv left me breathless. I would recommend this tour for sure to anyone looking for a unique adventure in the Riviera and the Caribbean!

Amazing sites and very knowledgeable guides. Laguna Rosada is very pretty and get to go up to a viewpoint of the whole site. Rio Lagartos you get to cruise on a speed boat and see wild flamingos, crocodiles, pelicans fly up to the boat, and many more wild animals. Tasty and filling authentic lunch at oldest restaurant in town. Crocodile farm was crazy, being able to feed and take pictures right up next to the crocodiles. Every guide was nice and friendly and spoke good English!

Hello Max! Thank you for sharing your fantastic experience with us! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the amazing sites and found our guides to be knowledgeable. It's wonderful that you appreciated the beauty of Las Coloradas and the panoramic viewpoint. The Rio Lagartos excursion sounds like a thrilling adventure with encounters with wild flamingos, crocodiles, and pelicans. We're delighted that you enjoyed the tasty and filling authentic lunch at the oldest restaurant in town. We appreciate your kind words about our guides' friendliness and proficiency in English. Providing a memorable and enjoyable experience for our guests is our top priority. We hope to welcome you back for more exciting adventures in the future!

One of our best weather days in Cancun was our catamaran trip to Isla Mujeres. We stay at Villa del Palmar & normally take the local Punta Sam Ferry across, so this was a nice switch up. We got the boat at the dock, just off the resort beach, so it was super convenient. The staff were friendly & hospitable. The boat was clean. A few from our group enjoyed the snorkeling. Everyone wore a waist floatation device, as required. We enjoyed our day on the water to the fullest! I will list a couple of “CONS” though: - docking fee to be paid before boarding @ an additional $20USD per person. We did know this in advance but an additional expense nonetheless - we were told maybe 22 people on board and that’s not the case. Boat felt very crowded & overbooked. - two hours on the island is not enough time if you are wanting to explore and rent golf carts. Felt rushed. - drinks are quite watered down but that’s probably not a bad thing! LOL

Hello traveler! We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your day on the water and appreciate your compliments on our friendly and hospitable staff, as well as the cleanliness of the boat. We understand your concerns regarding the negative aspects you mentioned and appreciate your honesty. We regret any inconvenience caused by the additional berthing fee and note your observation about the ship's capacity. We will work to improve communication about the actual capacity of the trips to avoid misunderstandings in the future. We also note your comment about the limited amount of time on the island and the quality of the beverages. Your suggestions are valuable to us, and we will share them with our team to evaluate possible improvements in the length of the trip and the quality of services offered. Have a nice day!

It was long trip to get to the pink lake, Omar was the best travel guide! He knows how to make the road trip safe and fun Pink lake was pretty And boat riding was great! Saw too many crocodiles! It was almost 11 hours of trip, but not boring at all!

Hello Boram! We're glad to hear that you had a great time on our Tour to Las Coloradas! While it might have been a long trip, it's fantastic to know that Omar, your travel guide, made the road trip both safe and enjoyable. 🌊🚤 We're glad you found the pink lake beautiful and enjoyed the boat ride, especially with the incredible crocodile sightings. Thank you for sharing your positive feedback, and we hope to welcome you back for more exciting adventures in the future! 🌺🐊

Tour operator was very passionate about the things we were going to see and did a great job communicating. I really enjoyed visiting the PInk Lakes and felt that it was a one of a kind scenery. Really cool seeing the pink flamingos in the wild, but wished we could have gotten closer. Otherwise, a very good experience.

Hello dear traveler! We are glad to know you enjoy your trip to Las Coloradas better know as the pink lakes. Cheer tou your tour operator to help and create a better experience for you! we are sad that you were not able to see the flamingos up close because for safety and nature protection reasons it is not allowed. We look forward to seeing you again for more incredible experiences at Mexican Caribbean. Thank you for your preference and your comments. Wish you a nice day!

Cancun Vs. Riviera Maya: 7 Key Differences To Know Before Visiting

M ention a Mexican beach vacation and people generally think of gorgeous turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and drinks made with tequila. Rightfully so! Well, all of that and more exists on the beautiful eastern coast of Mexico in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. My husband and I have been visiting Cancun for over 20 years. We find ourselves lounging on the white sand beaches one to two times a year since Cancun is a quick and easy trip from Dallas, Texas.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya both boast fabulous locations on the Caribbean Sea, welcoming visitors from all over the world. After they greet you with their balmy beach climate, they beckon you to stay a little longer with the lure of Mexican hospitality and the thought of sipping tequila under the sway of the palm trees.

Comparing the two is actually very common and though often used interchangeably, these two tourist hot spots are actually very different destinations!

Understanding the major differences between the two areas will help you to choose the best location for your style of travel, so let’s dive in and explore what Cancun and the Riviera Maya have to offer!

Cancun Vs Riviera Maya: 7 Major Differences To Know Before You Visit

1. size and population.

The biggest difference between Cancun and the Riviera Maya is the fact that Cancun is a city and the Riviera Maya is a region made up of many small towns.

Cancun: Large And Touristy City

Cancun , located on the northeast tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is the largest city in the Yucatan Peninsula. At the time of publication, the population of Cancun was nearly one million people.

Tourists flock to Cancun’s hotel area to enjoy the beautiful turquoise waters of the Caribbean, while the majority of Cancun’s residents live in its downtown area where few tourists venture. This makes for a large separation between the tourist experience and the local experience when you visit Cancun.

Riviera Maya: Sprawling Region

The Riviera Maya, which is located just south of Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula, is a region made up of several small towns. Popular cities in the Riviera Maya include Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, and Puerto Aventuras.

The largest town in the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, has a population of 250,000 people, relatively small when compared to the population of Cancun. The smaller populations of these towns mean that tourists often intermingle with the locals, seeing what their everyday life is like.

2. Proximity To The Airport

If you do not want to travel for long in a car or shuttle once you arrive in Mexico, then you will definitely want to choose Cancun over the Riviera Maya.

Cancun: Minutes From Plane To Water

The Cancun Hotel Zone is located about 15 miles from the Cancun International Airport. This short drive takes approximately 25 minutes. Choosing to stay in Cancun means you could be sipping margaritas on the sand within an hour of landing in Mexico.

Riviera Maya: More Transit Time

Traveling outside of Cancun to the Riviera Maya requires more driving time. It is approximately 45 miles (or more) to reach the Riviera Maya. This means that you will be in the car for a minimum of an hour if you choose to stay in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico.

3. Hotel Choices

Cancun hotel complex: large resorts and hotels.

Cancun boasts a wide variety of hotels and resorts for travelers to enjoy. From budget-friendly options to five-star accommodations, you will find it all in Cancun.

The main hotel region in Cancun is the Hotel complex. This 13-mile zone contains high-rise resorts sitting on beautiful beaches overlooking the Caribbean Sea. There are also numerous budget-friendly accommodations in the downtown Cancun area. While you will find a few adults-only resorts in the Hotel Zone, many are geared toward families with children. They offer multiple dining options, several pools, and nightly entertainment to ensure that you never have to leave the resort (unless you want to).

Riviera Maya: Smaller Hotels And Vacation Rentals

The resorts in the Riviera Maya tend to be spread out along the stretch of land between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. These resorts vary between adults-only properties (including fellow writer Chris Moore’s favorite Riviera Maya naturist resort !) and properties geared toward families. Like the big resorts in Cancun, most Riviera Maya resorts also boast several restaurants, bars, pools, and multiple entertainment options to help keep guests occupied and happy.

Accommodations in the cities of the Riviera Maya tend to be smaller hotels and vacation rentals. Again, you will find some properties that are geared toward just couples, but the majority of these properties are available for families as well. These vacation rental options are often interspersed throughout the city and mixed in with local residences. These are great for people who want to see how the locals live in the Riviera Maya.

4. Nightlife And Shopping

Another key difference between Cancun and the Riviera Maya is the sharp contrast in atmospheres and ambiance that you’ll experience.

Cancun: Thriving Nightlife

Cancun has a thriving nightlife. and the energy of a big city. Here you can enjoy loads of shopping and restaurant options along with numerous bars and clubs offering fun and energetic nightlife choices. Shopping in Cancun ranges from bartering at Mercado 28 to browsing name brands like Walmart, Apple, and Costco.

Riviera Maya: Laid-Back Vibe

The Riviera Maya region tends to offer a more laid-back, relaxed vibe, which makes sense given how far apart the resorts are in this area, but there are still things you can see and do in Riviera Maya . Visitors can still enjoy some nightlife and shopping in towns like Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but if you are not staying in those cities, then you have to drive to get there. The shopping in Playa del Carmen is centered on the famous 5 th Avenue. Here you will find stalls filled with local creations along with name-brand stores.

The Yucatan Peninsula is known for its beautiful beaches. The beaches found in this area of Mexico contain gorgeous soft white sand leading into clear turquoise waters.

While the entire area has great beaches, there is definitely a difference in the types of beaches contained in each area. The ocean water in Cancun tends to have more waves and surf rolling in, while the waters in the Riviera Maya are often calmer thanks to the natural barrier reef that protects this area.

Cancun: White Sand For Miles

The beaches in Cancun are the beaches that you often see pictured and associated with this area of Mexico. These are the gorgeous white sand beaches with turquoise water. The beaches of Cancun stretch for miles, and although many resorts have a private area on the beach, it is actually public property. This means that the beaches in Cancun can become crowded.

Riviera Maya: Many Smaller, Less Crowded Beaches

The beaches in the Riviera Maya are just as beautiful but are often not as wide as the beaches in Cancun. The beaches that front the resorts on the stretch of land between Cancun and Playa del Carmen are generally not as long as the stretches of beaches in Cancun, either. That said, these beaches are usually less crowded and tend to have a very relaxed vibe. The beaches of Playa del Carmen, one of the most popular towns in the Riviera Maya, are all public, so they do tend to get crowded.

6. The Vibe

Cancun: exudes energy.

Cancun just seems to exude energy around every corner. There is always something going on, so you definitely will not get bored during your time in the city. It is easy to spend the day out shopping and then spend the evening dancing the night away in the many clubs (both on and off resort properties). Cancun is what it is, and it is a party-centered town. Cancun provides a lively, party-till-you-drop kind of vibe that continues to draw the young and young at heart.

Riviera Maya: Laid-Back

The Riviera Maya area has a much more laid-back vibe. Here you can find a variety of atmospheres. Some resorts pride themselves on being laid-back, quiet retreats, while others bring the club-like atmosphere. The fact that the Riviera Maya region is so spread out makes it a little more difficult to bar hop or hit up several clubs in one night. This area generally draws those looking for fun, but not to the level of Cancun.

7. Area Attractions

Cancun: fabulous resort fun.

Known as a resort town, Cancun’s main draw is the fabulous resorts that it offers. Many travelers visit Cancun and never leave their resort! Beyond the resort, Cancun also offers incredible nightlife and fabulous beaches. If you are looking for other attractions in the area, Cancun does have a few to offer. The Cancun Aquarium is a nice addition to a family itinerary. You can also set out on some cool excursions from the Cancun area including a trip to Chichen Itza or a ferry ride over to Isla Mujeres .

Riviera Maya: The Jungle and Ancient Mayan Ruins

Families love visiting the aquatic parks of Xel-Ha and Xcaret during their time in the Riviera Maya. This area is also great for exploring the crystal-clear waters of the cenotes found throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Adrenaline junkies will love the opportunity to zip-line or ride ATVs through the jungle in this area of Mexico. Of course, we would be remiss if we did not mention the seaside Maya ruins of Tulum . Visiting 13th-century ancient Mayan Ruins is worth a day trip for the whole family. Mayan ruins will make your stay in Cancun an unforgettable experience.

Pro Tip On Seaweed Season in Cancun and Riviera Maya

Even though there are too many differences when comparing Cancun and Riviera Maya, both places are typically flooded with Sargassum seaweed each year between April and October. Due to the massive accumulation of seaweed in the Atlantic Ocean, the seaweed season has been known to extend through December.

The good news is that sargassum isn’t bad for your health. It is a brown alga that floats on top of the water, forming a thick blanket of intertwined stems and leaves that never attach to the ocean floor. The bad news is that sargassum makes the Yucatan’s water unappealing to swim in. It also reeks of rotten eggs, and it attracts flies.

However, if you book a hotel in Cancun’s Hotel Zone or some more upscale beach destinations in the Riviera Maya, the staff will likely do their best to cart the sargassum off their beachfront.

Will the Sargassum Hit Cancun in 2023 and 2024?

Cancun and Riviera Maya beaches are expected to remain relatively free of seaweed during the winter months of 2023 and the upcoming 2024 summer holiday season due to distance, speed of travel, and currents in the Atlantic Ocean.

Cancun Vs. Riviera Maya: Bottom Line

No matter which of these destinations you choose, you are guaranteed an incredible experience in Mexico. Both Cancun and the Riviera Maya allow you to enjoy Mexican culture by immersing yourself in the food, history of Mayan ruins, and ambiance of the area that surrounds you. It is entirely up to you whether you prefer relaxing on a laid-back, quiet beach (go for the Riviera!), or hitting Cancun’s party scene to dance the night away. No matter which area you choose, you are sure to fall in love with the Yucatan and the Mexican hospitality its welcoming people provide!

Is It Safe to Travel to Cancun or Riviera Maya?

Yes, it is. Crime rates in Cancun and Riviera Maya are generally low, but it’s always a good idea to take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings by staying in well-lit areas, avoiding walking alone at night, and keeping your valuables safe.

Which Has Better Cenotes, Riviera Maya or Cancun?

Riviera Maya has much better cenotes to swim and dive in than Cancun because of the sheer diversity of the sinkhole formations in Riviera Maya. On the other hand, there aren’t any cenotes inside Cancun, and the nearest ones are about 30 minutes away.

Which Is More Affordable, Cancun or Riviera Maya?

Riviera Maya is more affordable than Cancun. Since Cancun is a bit city and Riviera Maya includes a variety of not-so-popular destinations, the prices in Riviera tend to be a little cheaper.

Which Is More Family Friendly, Cancun or Riviera Maya?

Cancun is definitely a better destination for families than Riviera Maya. If the convenience and comfort of beach resorts is what your family loves, then Cancun is your spot, but if you don’t mind smaller beaches and more challenging moving around with small kids, then Riviera Maya could work for you.

Which Is Better for Outdoor Activities, Cancun or Riviera Maya?

Riviera Maya offers too many different outdoor experiences to compare it to Cancun. Also, typical ocean activities like snorkeling and scuba diving are way better on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef than anywhere in Cancun.
