Best Cruises from Los Angeles, California in 2023
Looking to take a cruise out of Los Angeles but you’re not sure where you want to go yet?
Los Angeles World Cruise Center in San Pedro offers cruises to destinations all over the world. We looked at all the cruises sailing out of LA and Long Beach in 2023 and broke down what we thought were the best cruises from Los Angeles in 6 categories.
In this article we will look at cruise itineraries that sail to the Mexican Riviera, Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, the South Pacific, and even a World cruise, all out of LA.
By the way, there are two cruise ports in the Los Angeles area but they are only about 7 miles apart. Only Carnival ships sail out of Long Beach so most of the cruises below sail from the cruise port in San Pedro.
2023 is already quickly flying by, so let’s get right into it.
Mexican Riviera
The Mexican Riviera is to West Coast Americans what the Caribbean is to those living on the East Coast.
If you want to enjoy the sunny beaches of Puerto Vallarta , the stunning landscape off the coast of Cabo San Lucas , or the endless ocean boardwalk of Mazatlan’s Malecon the Mexican Riviera is a must-see.
The three cruise ports above are the most popular are commonly seen on cruise itineraries to this region, but there are many other incredible stops along the way.
7 Days on Discovery
This sailing is on one of my favorite ship classes, Royal-class with Princess Cruises. And on top of a beautiful, elegant ship you get to sail to 3 of the best ports on the Mexican West Coast.
Ship: Discovery Princess Duration: 7 days Dates: Feb 25, March 4, March 18, April 1, Apri 15, October 14, October 28, November 11, November 18, December 23, December 30 Itinerary: LA, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, LA Price: Starting around $500 per person for interior stateroom
Check out cruise on the Princess Cruises website here .
8 Days with a Stop in San Diego
Celebrity Eclipse is a popular Solstice-class vessel, and this itinerary gives you an extra day to spend in San Diego before you have to head back to LA.
Ship: Celebrity Eclipse Duration: 8 days Dates: November 17th Itinerary: LA, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, San Diego, LA Price: Starting around $746 per person for interior stateroom
Check out more on this cruise with Celebrity .
Short and Sweet
This itinerary is for those looking for a quick weekend getaway. There’s only one port of call, and it might feel like you barely unpacked your suitcase before you’re back in LA, but sometimes you just need a weekend cruise.
Ship: Carnival Radiance Duration: 3 days Dates: Starting March 3rd and about every Friday to Monday through the entire year. Itinerary: LA, Ensenada , LA Price: Starting around $184 per person during off-peak months
This same ship sails the other 4 days of the week as well, sailing Monday through Friday if you’d rather just skip work for a week.
Check out cruise on Carnival’s website .
There are 21 cruises that depart from LA and sail to Hawaii until the end 2023. Here are 3 of the best itineraries and cruises to the Aloha state.
16 night Crown-Class cruise to Hawaii
This 2007 Princess cruise ship offers a pretty great deal for 4 days in Hawaii and another 10 at sea. Without sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line on Pride of America this is about as good a deal as you can get with this much time in port.
Ship: Emerald Princess Duration: 16 nights Dates: May 4, June 1, July 6, August 5 Itinerary: LA, 5 sea days, Kauai, Hilo, Honolulu, Maui, 5 sea days, Ensenada, LA Price: Around $1,248 per person for interior stateroom
Check out this cruise with Princess here .
Viking Star to Hawaii
Small ship comfort is at its best on a Viking cruise to Hawaii. Two dates in December make this cruise a great way to cap off 2023. Viking also provides one free excursion at each port and tons of opportunity for an immersive experience.
Ship: Viking Star Duration: 16 nights Dates: December 12, December 28 Itinerary: LA, 5 sea days, Hilo, Honolulu, Kauai, Maui, 5 sea days, Ensenada, LA Price: Balcony from $5,500 per person
Check out this cruise with Viking here .
20 Nights in Paradise
This is one of the best itineraries you can get to Hawaii without actually starting in Hawaii itself. It’s on the pricier end of the spectrum and it’s with an ultra-luxury cruise line, but it’s one incredible cruise.
The 6 sea days on either end might seem long, but don’t forget you’re sailing on one of the most luxurious ships on the sea. And spending 6 days in Hawaii on a cruise is hard to beat.
Ship: Seabourn Sojourn Duration: 20 nights Dates: December 22, 2023 Itinerary: LA, 6 sea days, Kona, Hilo, Honolulu for 2 days, Kauai, Maui, 6 sea days, Ensenada, LA Price: Suite from around $10,000
Check out this Seabourn cruise to Hawaii here .
Ready for a break from the heat? Explore Alaska on a cruise out of LA and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime. Check out some of the best LA to Alaska cruises we found for 2023. There are only 2 cruise lines that sail to Alaska from LA: Carnival and Oceania.

2 Weeks on Miracle
This cruise actually sails out of the Long Beach Terminal, but it’s right next to the Los Angeles cruise port. Carnival offers a very reasonable rate for a 14 day itinerary to Alaska, and it’s full of wonderful cruise ports.
Ship: Carnival Miracle Duration: 14 days Dates: April 23, September 10 Itinerary: Long Beach, 3 sea days, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, Tracy Arm Fjord, Ketchikan, Prince Rupert, 3 sea days, Long Beach Price: Starting at $1,419 per person for interior cabin
Check out this cruise in Carnival Miracle here .
Panama Canal
Sailing through a modern world wonder on a cruise ship should be on your bucket list somewhere. And LA offers several cruises for such a voyage.
Norwegian Cruise Line offers 3 Panama Canal cruises out of LA this year, each on a Breakaway-class vessel. Each ends in Miami and is a 15-17 night journey.
Norwegian Bliss through Panama Canal
Not only will this itinerary take you through the Panama Canal, but you’ll also get to enjoy the beautiful Mexican Riviera on the way there, and then get to stop on Cartagena, Columbia before you arrive in Miami, Florida.
Ship: Norwegian Bliss Duration: 15 nights Dates: November 19, 2023 Itinerary: LA, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Puerto Quetzal, Panama City, Panama Canal, Cartagena, Miami Price: Starting at $999 per person for interior stateroom
Check out this cruise on Norwegian’s website .
Panama Canal Cruise with Cunard
Cunard offers a great Panama Canal cruise out of LA as well, with stops in Aruba and Costa Rica before arriving in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Ship: Queen Elizabeth Duration: 14 nights Dates: August 22, 2023 Itinerary: LA, Cabo San Lucas, 3 sea days, Puntarenas (Costa Rica), Panama Canal, Aruba, 2 sea days, Fort Lauderdale Price: Starting at $1,899 per person for interior cabin
South Pacific
Yes, you can even sail to Tahiti and the South Pacific from Los Angeles. The itinerary below spends two days in Papeete, French Polynesia which is on Tahiti, but not before stopping for a few days in Hawaii. The sailing from LA to Sydney will last for 26 incredible days.
Ship: Majestic Princess Duration: 26 nights Dates: October 8th – November 4th, 2023 Itinerary: LA, 4 sea days, Honolulu, Maui, 5 sea days, 2 days in French Polynesia, 3 sea days, American Samoa, 3 sea days, 3 days in New Zealand, 2 sea days, Sydney Price: Starting at $2,347 per person for interior stateroom

Los Angeles Cruise Guide
Due to its location along the Pacific Coast, many cruise itineraries to Mexico, the Panama Canal, South America, the Transpacific and Hawaii depart from the city of Los Angeles. This is the best port to find affordable getaways to the Mexican Riviera.
The port itself is actually located in Long Beach, which is a short drive away from the big-city L.A., but also has its fair share of attractions. You can stay overnight at the Queen Mary, a retired vintage luxury ocean liner that is rumored to be haunted and offers ghost tours. Take a dip in the calm waters at the beach, or take a whale watching tour along the Pacific Ocean. Once you’ve seen it all at the port, a short ride by car, Uber or the L.A. Metro brings you to the star-studded city of Los Angeles, where you can easily spend a week exploring all that it has to offer.
The city of Los Angeles is home to the biggest names in arts and culture, so it comes as no surprise that there’s a large variety of cultural attractions and museums. There are must-see art galleries like The Getty, which features classical exhibitions and artifacts, and the popular new museum, The Broad, which is free to enter, and features more modern exhibits. Music lovers can check out the GRAMMY Museum, or catch a concert at the beautifully designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Los Angeles is the birthplace of American Cinema, so there’s also a variety of studio backlot tours that you can take, like Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, NBC and more. If you catch yourself walking along the historical streets of Hollywood, be sure to look down and spot some of your favorite celebrities names on their Stars at the Walk of Fame.
There are many ways to snap a picture of the infamous Hollywood sign, depending on the angle you’d like. If you have a car you can make a pit stop along Deronda Drive, and take a quick walk over to the sign. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, take the 6-mile hike along the Brush Canyon Trail, where you’ll eventually get that picture-perfect shot. You can also see the sign from outside of the Griffith Observatory, where for a small fee you can go up to the top of the observatory and take in the best panoramic views of the city of Los Angeles.
Los Angeles is also known for its diverse range of shops. For high-end designer trends, be sure to explore Rodeo Drive, where you might even run into a celebrity or two. For hip vintage and thrift shops, walk along Melrose, and for the ultimate cheap finds, check out the Los Angeles Fashion District. There’s also no shortage of food, with delicious restaurants and popular chains on every block. Los Angeles is home to In-N-Out Burger, a popular West Coast fast food chain, as well as many other restaurants owned by celebrity chefs and popular Instagram-worthy cafés.

Landlocked Florida county full of citrus groves was top destination for U.S. movers in 2023 as people searched for affordable home prices
More people moved to a county rich with citrus groves located between two of Florida’s most populous metro areas than to any other county in the U.S. last year, according to estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau .
More than 29,300 people moved last year to the county between Tampa and Orlando, two metro areas where housing has grown increasingly pricey and the county is considered a cheaper alternative. In short order, Polk County has come to have fewer orange groves along Interstate 4 and more subdivisions for local service workers as well as distribution warehouses for on-demand deliveries for residents in both metropolitan areas.
Almost all the growth in Polk County — 88% — consisted of people moving from another part of the U.S. rather than from abroad , according to the 2023 population estimates.
“Subdivision growth has been springing up and it happens in such a manner that you don’t always notice it. But when you are stuck in traffic, that’s when you really pay attention that it’s going on,” Matt Joyner, a seventh-generation Polk County resident, said about the influx of new residents.
Only four other counties — Harris and Montgomery counties in metro Houston; Collin County in metro Dallas; and Maricopa County, home to Phoenix — grew by more people, thanks to their higher numbers of natural increase, or births outnumbering deaths.
Harris County, which is home to Houston, grew by almost 54,000 people, the most of any county last year, with about two-thirds of the growth coming from births outpacing deaths. That natural increase of almost 34,700 people was the highest in the nation.
Despite having an influx of thousands of new residents from abroad, and births outpacing deaths, some of the most populous U.S. counties also lost the most residents due to their moving to other counties last year, a trend that accelerated at the start of the decade with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Leading the way was Los Angeles County, with 56,000 fewer residents. Three counties representing the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx in New York City followed, with population losses of 28,300 people, 26,300 people and 25,300 people, respectively. However, the outflows from these large counties last year were substantially smaller than they were in 2022.
New York City officials, though, believe the Census Bureau’s estimates don’t account for the influx of tens of thousands of asylum seekers last year. The city rented out entire hotels to house migrants and also put cots in schools and temporarily housed people in tents, a cruise ship terminal and a former police academy building.
As many as 50,000 people were overlooked in the city’s shelters, according to city officials, who plan to challenge the estimates to the Census Bureau.
“We wanted to flag it,” said Casey Berkovitz, press secretary for New York’s Department of City Planning. “Once you account for this underestimate … the year marked a return to pre-pandemic levels.”
In the most popular destinations for immigrants — counties in South Florida and counties that are home to Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Jose — international migration grew by double digits year-over-year.
The estimates don’t distinguish between legal immigration and illegal immigration, so it’s impossible to know if any of the growth came from unlawful border crossings. Arrests for illegal crossings hit a record high in December but fell by half in January.
In Miami-Dade County, there were almost 54,500 new residents from outside the U.S., the highest in the nation last year and an almost 40% increase over the previous year. The international migration offset the departure of more than 47,000 residents who left Miami-Dade County for other U.S. counties.
Among metro areas, which combine counties having social and economic connections, the Dallas metro area had the biggest growth last year — more than 152,000 residents — and surpassed 8 million residents for the first time. That growth was followed by metro Houston, with almost an additional 140,000 residents, and metro Atlanta, with an increase of more than 68,000 people.
Metro Atlanta jumped two spots from last year to become the sixth most populous metro area, with 6.3 million residents. It is surpassed only by metro New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Houston.
With more than 62,000 acres of citrus groves, Polk County is one of the leading producers of oranges in Florida. The state’s citrus industry in recent years has been squeezed between a fast-spreading bacteria that has attacked the health of trees all over the state and relentless growth that has spilled over as its metro areas have expanded.
Despite that, Polk County has held onto its citrus heritage. Most of the growth has been concentrated in the northeastern part of the county, just a few miles from Walt Disney World in metro Orlando. But many of the citrus growers there who sold their land to subdivision builders have just moved to the southern part of the county, where citrus groves are still plentiful, said Joyner, CEO of Florida Citrus Mutual, a growers’ advocacy group.
New residents to Polk County have something picturesque to see if they drive around the county’s groves right now — white flowers on citrus trees and a sweet aroma in the air.
“Everywhere you go right now, the groves are snow white and the smell is sweet,” Joyner said. “It reminds you of the old days.”

Waymo's robotaxi service set to expand into Los Angeles

A Waymo car is seen on the streets of San Francisco on Aug. 25, 2023.
If you happen to be in Hollywood and see a car go by with no driver at the wheel, don't be alarmed. After more than a year of testing, around 50 driverless robotaxis are debuting to the public across Los Angeles on Thursday.
The autonomous vehicles are run by Waymo, which is owned by Google's parent company Alphabet. Waymo started giving driverless rides to passengers in San Francisco last year and also operates them in Phoenix.
At first, the rides will be free and open to people who've signed up on Waymo's waitlist, which the company says has 50,000 people. In the coming weeks, Waymo will transition to a paid service. The company's coverage area serves 63-square-miles of L.A. — from Santa Monica to downtown.
The Southern California debut comes as controversy and blunders have plagued self-driving cars in San Francisco. Both Waymo and its competitor Cruise, which is owned by GM, have been blamed for running red lights, blocking public buses and getting in the way of emergency responders.
Cruise was involved in an incident that left a pedestrian severely injured in October — causing the company to halt operations and lose its operating permit in the state.
Driverless car startup Cruise's no good, terrible year
It hasn't necessarily been a smooth ride for Waymo in L.A.
In the run-up to its debut in the city, there have been complaints by L.A.'s mayor Karen Bass and protests by angry residents. The Teamsters union held one protest outside of Google's local office in October.
Unions and labor leaders say they're concerned the robotaxis will take away jobs and also pose a danger to workers who drive emergency vehicles.
"Autonomous vehicles like the ones that Waymo wants to unleash in our communities, have been wreaking havoc wherever they go," Yvonne Wheeler, president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, said during the protest. "It's clear that this technology is not ready to be introduced into our roads and our cities."
Both Cruise and Waymo say their vehicles are safer than human drivers and that they've had relatively few incidents. They say they've driven millions of driverless miles without any human fatalities.
However, the incidents have garnered attention. And an Uber self-driving car, operating in full autonomous mode and with a safety driver in the vehicle, killed a pedestrian in Arizona in 2018.
"Once an unimaginable future, autonomous driving is now a real-world way of getting around for tens of thousands of people each week," said Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo.
The state of California approved Waymo's L.A. permit earlier this month, despite protests from local lawmakers.
"I think it's disastrous for this city," said Los Angeles City Council member Hugo Soto-Martinez. "It should be local leaders who should be making these decisions about people's public safety, not an unelected body."
He's supporting a state bill that's been gaining momentum, SB 915 , which was introduced by Sen. Dave Cortese, Democrat from San Jose. This bill would change the way robotaxi companies are given permits. Instead of being approved by the state, it would pass permitting authority to local lawmakers.
"Under SB 915, the rules of the road will continue to be established and enforced by the people who live there," Cortese said in a statement.
Waymo is already setting its sights on its next robotaxi debut. It says it plans to start offering rides in Austin, TX, later this year.

They’re one big happy family.
Dean McDermott exclusively tells Page Six that his estranged wife, Tori Spelling, and girlfriend, Lily Calo, “get along fabulously.”
“If I do the right things and I live an estimable and respectable life, you know, I get these wonderful gifts in my life,” he raves.
“I’m blessed, you know, having everybody get along and come together for the greater good of the kids, I just, I’m so blessed. It’s a beautiful thing.”
McDermott’s positive remarks about Spelling and Calo’s relationship comes less than a week after they were seen giving each other a friendly kiss on the cheek at Dave & Buster’s in Los Angeles, where they celebrated son Beau McDermott’s 7th birthday.
Of course, this means Calo, 32, has met McDermott and Spelling’s five children . “Things are going really well,” he tells Page Six of his 6-month relationship with the senior account executive.
The pair seemingly confirmed their relationship in October 2023 when they were photographed holding hands at a Los Angeles welfare office.
The actor, 57, tells Page Six Calo has helped him maintain his sobriety and is a “great support.”
He also sings praises about Spelling’s support amid his ongoing sobriety journey and describes her as his “biggest fan.”
“You know, she she just wants me to be happy. Bottom line,” he continues. “And she’s such an incredible woman that way. She’s one of the most generous people I’ve ever met in my life.”
“Most caring, empathetic. And she just wants the best for everybody … And sometimes at the expense of her happiness … But that’s the kind of person she is.”

Last November, the former “Chopped Canada” host revealed a drunken fight was the last straw in his crumbling relationship with Spelling, 50.
“It was the night that I raged against her and the children and I saw the light, the final flicker of the flame go out in her eyes,” he recalled to DailyMail.com.

The fight led him to announce their separation , unbeknownst to the “Beverly Hills, 90210” star.
“It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own,” he wrote on Instagram in June 2023.
“We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time,” he added.
Following their split, Spelling and their children — Liam, 17, Stella, 15, Hattie, 12, Finn, 11, and Beau — moved several times without McDermott, including into a $100-a-night motel and an RV.
It was later revealed that their home had an ongoing mold infestation issue that made them sick for months , prompting them to move.
“They’re doing better. … I have mold brain for sure,” McDermott tells Page Six. “It’s seriously, like, my memory is horrible. My energy is has been affected.”
“But the kids, you know, they’re more resilient, so they’re getting a little better,” he continues. “But still a lot of illness, because of it. Which is unfortunate.”
In February, Spelling and the kids reportedly moved into a five-bedroom , three-bath home in the west San Fernando Valley.
McDermott, who also shares 25-year-old son Jack Montgomery McDermott with ex-wife Mary Jo Eustace, is thought to have moved in with Calo in January after he was photographed carrying boxes labeled “Dean” into her Los Angeles abode.

Waymo expands robotaxi service with free rides in parts of Los Angeles
R obotaxis will begin cruising the streets of Los Angeles on Thursday when Google spinoff Waymo starts offering free rides to some of the roughly 50,000 people who have signed up for its driverless ride-hailing service.
Waymo is expanding into Los Angeles, the second largest U.S. city, seven months after California regulators authorized its robotaxis to begin charging for around-the-clock rides throughout San Francisco. That came despite objections from local officials who asserted the driverless vehicles posed unacceptable risks to public safety.
Although Waymo isn't charging for rides in its robotaxis in Los Angeles to start, the company said in a blog post announcing the expansion that it will eventually collect fares from passengers there too. Waymo also hopes to begin commercial operations in Austin, Texas, later this year, a goal that makes its robotaxi service available in four major U.S. cities 15 years after it began as a secret project within Google. Waymo's robotaxis have been charging for rides in Phoenix since 2020.
For now, Waymo's free rides in Los Angeles will cover a 63-square-mile (101-square-kilometer) area spanning from Santa Monica to downtown.
Waymo is launching operations in Los Angeles two weeks after the California Public Utilities Commission approved the expansion in a decision that once again overrode the concerns of city transportation officials about robotaxis coming to sudden stops that block roads and the potential for driverless vehicles to malfunction in more serious ways that could jeopardize lives.
The worst fears about robotaxis were realized in San Francisco last October when a vehicle operated by Cruise, a driverless ride-hailing service owned by General Motors, dragged a pedestrian who was hit by another car operated by a human for 20 feet (6 meters) while traveling at roughly 7 mph (11 kph) before coming to a stop. The incident resulted in California regulators suspending Cruise's state license and triggered a massive shakeup at that service.
Waymo's robotaxis so far haven't been involved in any major accidents.

Travis Kelce Attends Justin Timberlake, *NSYNC Reunion Without Taylor Swift
Travis kelce drives around l.a. without taylor swift after oscars party, travis kelce cruises around l.a. sans taylor ... after big oscars night, 1.3k 3/12/2024 4:27 pm pt.
Travis Kelce took a pause from Taylor Swift on Tuesday to cruise around Los Angeles with a pal -- but don't worry, Swifties ... he was probably on his way to her pad here.
Paps snapped photos of the Kansas City Chiefs star while he was riding in a fancy Range Rover on a sunny afternoon in Beverly Hills ... and as you can see, there was no Taylor in sight for this outing.
Kelce was riding shotgun as his buddy steered ... and, yeah, the back seats were all empty.
The tight end looked pretty stoic without his GF ... rocking a pair of dark sunglasses covering up his eyes.
However, there were several people on the ground near his vehicle who swore it was on its way to see T-Swift -- if you don't know, the pop star's got a sweet pad in that hood ... so he for sure might've been heading in that direction here.
It's probably a safe bet, if we're being honest. After all, Kelce just traveled across the globe last week to see her perform in Singapore -- and the duo jetted all the way back to the States to hit Madonna and Guy Oseary 's Oscars after-party in Hollywood Sunday night.
Some thought the couple might skip it all and have a whirlwind Spring overseas -- as Kelce's currently in his offseason and Swift's "Eras" tour is on a month-plus break right now. Alas, they came on back to the States and seem inclined to hang here in L.A. for a bit.
Still no sign of Taylor herself here in L.A. just yet -- but we're sure she'll surface eventually, with or without an umbrella covering her up. Trav seems more chill being photographed.
Regardless of whether it's here or there, a real-deal love affair still seems to be in our midst!

Florida citrus capital was top destination for US movers last year
- Associated Press
ORLANDO — More people moved to a county rich with citrus groves located between two of Florida’s most populous metro areas than to any other county in the U.S. last year, according to estimates released Thursday by the U.S.
New York City officials, though, believe the Census Bureau’s estimates don’t account for the influx of tens of thousands of asylum-seekers last year.
“Once you account for this underestimate ... the year marked a return to pre-pandemic levels.”
In the most popular destinations for immigrants — counties in South Florida and counties that are home to Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Jose — international migration grew by double digits year over year.

If you happen to be in Hollywood and see a car go by with no driver at the wheel, don't be alarmed. Around 50 driverless robotaxis are debuting across Los Angeles on Thursday, and supporters hope the ride in California's largest city won't be as bumpy as it's been in other parts of the state.
Waymo, part of Google's parent company, is responsible for the latest ride-share option. It started driving robotaxis in San Francisco last year. It also has them in Phoenix.
A promo video featuring Waymo employees on their first driverless rides in L.A. tried to generate excitement.
"I grew up in L.A. I'm a fourth-generation Angelino, and this was really special," says one of the passengers, as friends laugh. "Smooth and fun. Awesome and delightful."
Not so smooth and delightful for all Angelinos, though.
In the run-up to its L.A. debut, there have been lawsuits and protests by Teamsters members outside the company's local office in October. Labor leaders are concerned that the robotaxis will take away jobs and pose a danger to workers who drive emergency vehicles and even garbage trucks.
"It's clear that this technology is not ready to be introduced into our roads and our cities," says Yvonne Wheeler, president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. And she says she doesn't want these cars in her town after seeing what happened in San Francisco. "Autonomous vehicles have been wreaking havoc wherever they go. From blocking fire trucks to crashing into buses, running over animals."
Much of the criticism in San Francisco involved driverless cars operated by the company, Cruise, which is owned by GM. The state shut it down in October 2023, citing safety concerns. One of Cruise's driverless cars struck a pedestrian in downtown San Francisco earlier that month.
Both Cruise and Waymo say their vehicles are far safer than human drivers and compared to humans they've had relatively few incidents. They say they've driven millions of driverless miles without any human fatalities or life-threatening injuries. An Uber self-driving car, operating in full autonomous mode and with a safety driver in the vehicle, killed a pedestrian in Arizona in 2018.
The state of California approved the L.A. permit earlier this month, much to the chagrin of local lawmakers, including Los Angeles City Council member Hugo Soto-Martinez.
"I think it's disastrous for this city," Soto-Martinez says. "It should be local leaders who should be making these decisions about people's public safety, not an unelected body."
He supports a state bill that's gaining momentum and would change the permitting power to local authorities.
"And so if we're going to allow vehicles that are as dependable as your local wi-fi, I think that's a mistake," Soto-Martinez says. [Copyright 2024 NPR]

Waymo to launch robotaxi service in Los Angeles, but no freeway driving — for now

The driver in the Chevy Suburban seemed bent on testing the Waymo robotaxi on the streets of downtown L.A. this week.
Playing chicken against Silicon Valley’s wheeled robot, he sharply swung into the next lane toward the Waymo. The white, driverless Jaguar swerved to avoid the bigger car crossing the line.
The human driver then sped ahead of the robotaxi and braked abruptly in front of it. The machine slowed in time to avoid a collision, shifted into the next lane and the Chevy moved on, ending a brief yet anxiety-inducing interaction for a Los Angeles Times reporter and photographer riding in the Waymo vehicle.
Los Angeles, buckle up.
Robotaxis will begin doing business in L.A. over the next couple of weeks as regulators, developers, drivers, passengers and policymakers grapple with safety concerns and all the other scenarios that can play out when machines take over the wheel. Fender benders . Sex in the backseat . Serious crashes. Hostility . Awkward dropoff spots. And yes, skeptics who want to test the technology by putting obstacles in the way.
On Thursday, Waymo One, as the service is known, will begin offering rides across 63 square miles from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has already been in testing in Los Angeles-area neighborhoods for over a year. It rolled out a months-long “tour” in October, but until now, the service has been limited to small corners of the city and to those invited from a wait list.
The fleet will be less than 50 cars in L.A., said Waymo. But the fare charge debut in L.A. marks another major milestone for an industry once only imagined in science fiction. The fleet will descend on a city famous for its car culture and the identity people create around it. But no freeways for now, Waymo officials say; the cars will stick to surface streets.
The move comes less than a month after the California Public Utilities Commission, which oversees deployment of robotaxis, cleared the way for them in Los Angeles and cities across the Bay Area.
“This is going to revolutionize transportation, and people have a wide variety of comfort levels,” said David Margines, Waymo’s director of product management. “You always have people that are scared or nervous and take longer to accept new technology.”
But, Margines said, those who have used it tend to come back.
“They love it and what our users are saying is that they can’t wait for it to scale more,” he said. “They want to use Waymo for every one of the miles that they’re driving.”
More than 50,000 people have signed up for the wait list in Los Angeles. Waymo plans on providing free service for the next couple of weeks for those on the list before it transitions to paid fares through its app, much like Uber or Lyft.
Waymo already operates in San Francisco and Phoenix, where a series of recent incidents with robotaxis in both cities has further stoked existing safety concerns and evoked hostility.
Just last month in San Francisco, a driverless Waymo car crashed into a cyclist , causing minor injuries. The company said its robotaxi had been at a four-way stop when a large truck came into the intersection. The robotaxi waited for its turn, then proceeded through the intersection, but didn’t detect the cyclist behind the truck.
“When they became fully visible, our vehicle applied heavy braking but was not able to avoid the collision,” the company said.
Days later a small crowd lit an empty Waymo car on fire . Other residents in the city have put up cones and otherwise obstructed the vehicles.
As robotaxis descend in LA, officials already see trouble
With robotaxis being tested in Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass called on the state to increase scrutiny of the driverless vehicles before fully permitting them. She points to problems with the cars in San Francisco.
Nov. 3, 2023
In Phoenix, Waymo cars hit the same towed pickup truck twice. The company said “the Waymo AV incorrectly predicted the future motion of the towed vehicle.” The incident prompted a voluntary recall of software.
In Los Angeles, also last month, a Waymo testing vehicle hit a closing gate at USC. Waymo said its car was leaving the campus after dropping off passengers when it drove up to the automatic gate as it was moving. The robotaxi braked but was hit by the gate, resulting in some minor scratches.
The ride taken by Times journalists on Monday afternoon demonstrated the shortfalls of automated technology. The car sometimes did its dropoff in front of driveways where cars were exiting, and with the Waymo microphones set to mute, there was no way to tell it to pull up farther.
At a corner near Crypto.com Arena, a group of teenagers on bikes were loudly telling police that a man had a gun. In most cases, drivers might hightail it out of there. But backseat driving instructions were again futile. There was nothing but a button to call customer service.
Luckily the man accused of having a gun eventually calmly walked over to police, while the Waymo car — already set to pull over near the stadium — stopped nearby. A few minutes later, along Skid Row, the car pulled up several feet from a tent. It was unclear if there was anybody inside, but a human driver might know this is impolite and awkward.
In San Francisco — where Waymo’s largest fleet of 250 robotaxis operate and residents have become more accustomed to their presence — there have been far more serious incidents. A Waymo robotaxi competitor, Cruise, dragged a person down a street last year and the company allegedly failed to disclose the footage to the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which regulates testing of driverless vehicles. The DMV suspended the General Motors-owned company’s permits and Cruise has since suspended U.S. operations.
While Cruise is sidelined, dozens of other robotaxi companies are testing on California streets. According to the DMV , as of Feb. 2, 38 companies had permits to test autonomous vehicles with a backup safety driver, six companies were permitted to test driverless vehicles and three manufacturers could deploy autonomous vehicles . No fatal incidents have been reported, and there have been few crashes with serious injury, according to the DMV.
But the expansion of robotaxis has sparked protests from local leaders over safety concerns, even as Waymo says its driverless cars have logged more than 7 million miles and are better than humans at avoiding collisions. There’s also growing anxiety among some who worry about the implications of a robot primed to take over tens of thousands of driving jobs across the county.
“People are worried that right now that the sophistication level of the AVs is limited,” said California state Sen. Dave Cortese (D-San José), who has introduced a bill that would give local officials more control of autonomous vehicles. Among other things, it would allow local government to cap the number of robotaxis and limit where the cars can drive.
He says cities should have the right to establish no-dropoff zones — for example, near schools — or restrict cars at airports and other locations without having to wait for legislators in Sacramento.

Mayor Karen Bass asked the CPUC in November to increase its scrutiny of the automated vehicle companies and said the city should have a say in how they are regulated.
At the time, she said one of the Waymo driverless cars operating in Los Angeles had failed to initially stop for a traffic officer at Beaudry Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard on Aug. 3, 2023. The officer had been signaling east- and westbound traffic to stop.
There are several other pieces of legislation to impose further regulations on the vehicles. California Assemblymember Matt Haney of San Francisco recently introduced a bill that would force autonomous vehicle companies in California to report to the DMV collisions, traffic violations, occurrences of the autonomous mode shutting down and alleged incidents of assault or harassment that would then be published online within 30 days. The bill would allow the public to submit reports of incidents.
Already, the DMV requires manufactures to report crashes with property damage, bodily injury or death within 10 days. And the agency can revoke permits or suspend permits when it determines an “unreasonable risk to public safety.”
But some question what the robotaxis, even if they are safe, have to offer society.
“There are very real social questions about what the future holds,” said Melissa Cefkin, a social and behavioral researcher specializing in people’s interaction with automated vehicles.
Tens of thousands of humans could lose jobs in the future — from taxi to truck drivers — and most people have had little say in whether, where and how this technology will be applied.
“I’m a citizen in the San Francisco Bay Area, and nobody reached out to me to say is that OK, we test our cars on public roads,” said Cefkin, a former researcher at Waymo and in Nissan’s autonomous vehicle lab. “Frankly, there are still questions about, is this important to bother with? Why is it such a big deal to get human drivers out of their seats? You know, there’s world hunger, there’s wars, there’s poverty.”
